This is the usual branding for the BJU M&G.
Greenville County education, civic and cultural leaders are agreed that the Bob Jones University Art Museum is probably the most underexposed of all of the area's assets.
Comparatively few Greenvillians realize that here is a museum recognized internationally as having the finest collection of religious art in the United States, and probably the third such collection in the world.
Visitors from throughout the world, leaders in art fields and those who look for either an artistic or religious experience travel thousands of miles to see this collection, worth several million dollars.
300 PAINTINGS
The museum itself is a remarkable showcase for the collection of approximately 300 original paintings of the Old Masters, displayed in more than 30 galleries and sub-galleries.
Both the collection and the museum are a monument to the dedicated search and acquisition of paintings by Dr. Bob, the university's president, and his determined desire to place them in surroundings. that would enhance their beauty.
The opulent galleries with their dramatic use of color in wall and floor coverings are indicative of Dr. Jones' great artistic and cultural talents and his flair for spectacular presentations -- so often evidenced through the years in BJU stage performances.
DUTCH PAINTINGS
The collection is particularly rich in early Flemish and Dutch paintings of the 16th Century and in Baroque paintings of the 17th Century. The Dutch School of Utrecht is possibly better represented here than anywhere outside of the Netherlands, and the 17th Century French School is also exceptionally well represented.
Rembrandt's "Head of Christ" is one of several important works with outstanding paintings also included from the works of such artists as Tintoretto, Titian, Veronese, Sebastiano. del Piombo, Cranach, Gerald David, Murillo, Ribera, Rubens, Honthorst and van Dyck.
Experts and amateurs marvel that such a collection could be assembled in 16 years. The fact reflects again on the collector and his dynamic approach to every enterprise, his tremendous vitality and his enthusiasm.
The setting for this collection, in galleries opened at Thanksgiving, 1965, features simulated fabric wall coverings and rich carpetings -- vastly different than the bareness that characterizes so many art galleries.
Brilliant reds, blues, gold and purples are combined or contrasted in many of the galleries, while in some the somber browns and more neutral hues provide a background and the color flows from the paintings.
Scientifically designed lighting, planned to display each work of art to the best advantage, combines incandescent with fluorescent and quartz-type lighting.
3-LEVEL DISPLAY
The structure's 16-foot ceiling has permitted three-level displays in some sections, notably in the Russian icon room, just off the first gallery, and in the Bowen Bible Lands Museum.
Wood paneled Gothic and Renaissance rooms draw admiration that nearly equals that inspired by the paintings them selves. Gothic beams have been set in the ceiling of the Mitchell Samuels Gallery and a particularly fine series of beams from the 15th Century in another of the Gothic Galleries.
An imposing 16th Century ceiling, elaborately carved and 80 feet in length, graces a Renaissance corridor. The wall coverings (in Vicrtex vinyls) are each appropriate in design to the period of paintings displayed in that gallery, In many cases the rich Acrilan and nylon carpeting (made by Wunda Weave in Greenville) has been dyed to match the wall coverings.
Statuary, works of art and rich furnishings, keyed to the paintings on display, adds further to the attractiveness of nearly every gallery, providing variety without distracting from the museum's major purpose.
Acknowledging the effectiveness of this purpose, Moffett Kendrick, executive director of the Greater Greenville Chamber of Commerce, said recently, "The museum is so beautifully done, the impact is tremendous. I haven't taken anyone out there who hasn't had a real religious experience out of it.
"I dare say we have had people of all faiths and all degrees of sincerity there, and it never fails that they are amazed that such a thing could be found in Greenville. They marvel at the collection and they are enthralled by the museum, itself," Mr. Kendrick declared.
He points out that "We have taken a number of visiting groups to the museum in the past year - and look for every opportunity to do so. But when these groups are on a scheduled basis this 'is difficult," he admits. "They want to stay longer than any schedule permits and many of them want to come back when we can't stay longer."
A visiting art connoisseur commented in this same vein: "The splendor of Europe's palaces is recaptured here in a region that has been relatively deprived of visual excitement. Surely a majority of visitors will find themselves thunderstruck at first, having never before seen anything like it."
COLLECTION GROWS
Dr. Jones continues to add to the collection when it seems that there are few art treasures still available -- again to the amazement of museum authorities.
Two acquisitions of note in recent months have been Colijn de Coter's "Michael the Archangel and St. Agnes." The Brussels artist's life span is dated 1450 to c. 1510. Dr. Jones is also pleased with "Jewish Priest or Prophet" by the Venetian, Giovanni Batista Tiepolo (1696-1770).
Among Venetian Renaissance paintings that are deemed most valuable is the Vincenzo Catena "Holy  Family and St. John the Baptist," ranked in importance with the London National Gallery painting by Catena. A beautiful Bonifazio from the collection of the Duke Marlborough hung for many years in Blenheim Palace.
LAST SUPPER
The very large canvas, "Last Supper" by Titian and His Studio, comes from the Barbe ini College and is dated not later than 1525 by Federico Zeri, who expresses the opinion that Titian not only designed the composition, but also painted the figures himself.
"The Feeding of the Five Thousand" by Giovanni Lanfranco, painted in Naples in 1634, is one of the few works of this Baroque master to be seen in America.
The French collection includes Theophile Bigot's dramatic "St. Sebastian Aided by St. Irene," the beautiful Charles LeBrun "Pentecost," and the large signed and dated altarpiece by Louis de Boulogne The Younger.
Jack Morris J.., director of the Greenville County Museum of Art, points out that the collection's restriction in subject "is not particularly confining, because until the mid-16th Century, almost all art was religious."
A great many of the BJU paintings were included in NBC Project 20 films, "The Coming of Christ," "He Is Risen," and "The Law and the Prophets."
Great museums in England and on the Continent have borrowed from the local museum and reproductions are constantly seen in books, Bibles, magazines and in feature articles in daily papers.
