Once Upon A Time Rewatch Review: Season 3B, The Family Tree Continues To Be A Disaster

Where We Started: New York, New York; The Enchanted Forest

Where We Ended: Storybrooke, Maine, and Winter IS Coming

If we could stop being bad family members, we’d have a lot fewer problems. Also like I can’t believe how long this show existed without Zelena. Also for like the thousandth time, bravo casting department. Rebecca Mader and Lana Parrilla don’t look alike, but they don’t NOT look alike. And they have a lot of very similar mannerisms in their characters. The casting and writing department does a great job with this adversarial sibling dynamic. And for the second time in this series, HOW DID I NOT KNOW YOUNG CORA WAS ROSE MCGOWAN THE FIRST TIME AROUND??

Seriously. They definitely all look half related. I really do want to credit the writers a bit here, especially in this season, they write Zelena and Regina to share a lot of liness/test out each other’s catch phrases. It really makes them come off as having a natural connection.

Regina gets the sister reveal twice, which is so harsh. I’ll get back to Zelena in a bit cause she’s a big deal this season, but like, ouch. But like other shit went down and I need to talk about that too.

NEAL. We got SO. LITTLE. TIME. TOGETHER. Look I love shipping whoever the writers set me up to ship. I’m not out there in the Harry Potter fandom shipping Drapple or Snamione (please don’t come for me! I acttually think Drapple is one of the best things to come out of tumblr, and I’ll tag them in this post to prove it. I’m just into the mainstream) So up until Neal died the first time I watched, I was hoping for Swanfire. I just wanted Henry to have a chance to get back together. Neal loved his family. But once he was dead I really did become a Captain Swan fan, and I couldn’t be happier with how the series finale leaves them. But that’s still three full seasons from where I am at now. We will get there. Right now, let’s take a minute to remember Neal Cassidy.

Now let’s establish that I’m going to refer to the son of Snow White and Prince Charming as Baby Neal or Prince Neal. Mostly because what is their last name???? Is his name Neal Nolan? Neal Charming? I refer to their family as The Charmings. But like in Storybrooke itself Mary Margret Blanchard and David Nolan are not married. Everyone just kept their Storybrooke jobs (Wales is still the only doctor in this town besides Doc the dwarf?) and assumed that their Enchanted Forest marriages were carried over post curse? Okay. Tell me again how we eventually explain a casting change after two or three seasons but I don’t know what Baby Neal’s last name is. I mean the kid got lucky, he could have been a Leopold.

Also EXPLANATION about why Regina’s mother was out to get Snow’s mother and didn’t care that Regina was out there wiping out the royal family. But the question I now have is CAN YOU KISS SOMEONE YOUR MOTHER KISSED???? Because Zelena and Cora both have had things with Rumplestiltskin (apparently I’m the only girl in the forest who doesn’t have qualms about that weird skin) AND Cora KNOWINGLY AND INTENTIONALLY married off her other daughter TO HER FORMER FIANCE. I didn’t really register this the first time around and now I’m a little disturbed. It was really great to see Snow and Regina come together over it and be like “oh well, we were kind of set out to not get along, there were things about our mothers they never told us”.

It’s been so long since this was all on TV the first time that I’m honestly having trouble with a lot of ship names now. But one ship I love that we finally finally see in this season is Outlaw Queen. I’m actually so sad that they had so little time to be happy together (and boy are they happy) before the season finale throws a wrench in this relationship. Just a quick mention, Regina really loves Robin, we know how he’s the man with the lion tattoo, a second soulmate, all that jazz, but I think a big reason she loves Robin is Roland. He looks exactly like what I imagine a little Henry looked like. He’s SOOO cute.

Okay, so back to like the general things. Emma returns to Storybrooke with Hook, Henry doesn’t remember which results in some HEARTWRENCHING Regina moments. Nobody remembers anything except watching Emma drive away. The only reason they know it’s been a year? Mary Margret is like days away from giving birth. So Aurora was pretty pregnant before they even got to the Enchanted Forest. Like she’s been pregnant since before Neal left to get Henry from Neverland. But she gets turned into a flying monkey and it all just...stops? Leroy makes a comment when they get turned back into people that if they’d waited another day she would’ve had a baby flying monkey. But Snow wasn’t pregnant until after they got to the Enchanted Forest and still had her baby first. Timelines. Okay. I’m fine.

Anyways, Mary Margret has none of the self-preservation instincts Snow White wants us to believe she has, out of ALL the people she knows in Storybrooke, she picks someone she doesn’t know to be best friends with and let near her unborn child. Yep. It’s Zelena, Wicked Witch of the West.

We find out a bunch of stuff about Zelena and Oz and Cora’s life as the miller’s daughter. I mentioned a lot of it above. Good to know that women are still punished for premarital sex and sexuality no matter what realm you’re in! And that gardeners will trick you into having sex and then call you a gold-digging sl*t for it! Was this really truly the only thing you could come up with writers? I take back your writing credits from earlier for portraying this ridiculous patriarchal bullshit in other realms where you could’ve gotten rid of it. Quick shoutout again to Rose McGowan.

We find out a lot about how Rumple knew this entire tie that Zelena was out there in the realms somewhere and never bothered to mention anything to Regina in the 40 some years at least that they’ve known each other.

Rumple saves Neal long enough for Neal to A) Save Hook from the Curse to bring Emma back and B) Sacrifice himself so that Rumple can tell them who Zelena is.

Fun fact, this is the ONLY time in the entire series we see even a little bit of the Charming’s bathroom. Their bathroom has two doors, a window, and is mostly that cloudy pebbley glass on the apartment wall side. Like the most exposable bathroom in history. Which is fine with the Charmings I’m sure, because Snow and Charming don’t even have a curtain between their bed and the kitchen, even though they now have a baby, their adult daughter, and their grandson lvinging with them. Henry is right, they need a place.

There’s a lot of first timers in Storybrooke. The Merry Men, Zelena, Aurora and Phillip, whoever else was in Cora’s little safe corner that wasn’t also slaughtered in season 2. The housing market must be a wreck.

Emma has magic and makes Henry believe again, but Regina breaks the curse with true love’s kiss. Which she couldn’t do in season 1. Cool. Also if Emma is so special because she’s the product of true love, I’m calling bullshit. There are true love’s kisses and whooshi-rainbow curse undoing rings happening ALL OVER THE PLACE! Followed by babies! Where you ask? HOW ABOUT THE OTHER BABY THIS SEASON? Phillip woke Aurora up from a sleeping curse with TLK, now they’re having a baby. But their baby isn’t running around breaking curses. Anyways, Henry gets his memories back and it’s really great.

Hook is cursed to take away Emma’s magic if they kiss and like apparently like intent doesn’t count now? Cause CPR is NOT kissing ALSO THAT IS NOT HOW CPR WORKS! THIS IS THE SAME NETWORK THAT RUNS GREY’S ANATOMY, AT LEAST MAKE IT LOOK THAT GOOD. Also this is my problem with Emma being the Sherriff. She’s got no education, no curse memories full of knowledge, and in 30 years she’s never even taken a CPR/First Aid Course. It’s two days and a hundred and twenty dollars, and IS A BASIC REQUIREMENT OF THE JOB, ESPECIALLY SINCE WE’VE NEVER SEEN A PARAMEDIC IN THIS TOWN.

Sorry, there’s a lot of yelling happening. IT’S THE DAY OF THE SHOW Y’ALL and Emma loses her magic and turns out, she really is more powerful than everyone else. Snow loses her kid a few minutes after birth again (AGAIN AURORA AND PHILLIP’S BABY ALSO WOULD’VE WORKED). Regina decides to be a hero and saves everyone, WHICH WE LOVE.

Rumple uses his newfound freedom to give the shittiest proposal ever. Like in all those belongings in the shop, all of which you stole by being cursed or weaseled out of people, there wasn’t a single ring in there? Like the dagger would have been a good proposal IF ANYTHING HE WAS SAYING WAS TRUE. Like she didn’t want the dagger, there was no reason to pretend to give it to her. But she fell for it and the last scene of the season is them having a private little wedding at the wishing well. (Since when can Archie ordain weddings? Like he just suddenly can? He later officiates at Emma’s wedding, but like what happened to that guy that married Snow and Charming at their big wedding? How is that not his job in Storybrooke too?) Anyways, the second thing Rumple does with his freedom is “murder” Zelena. I forget how she didn’t die but her “death” sets off the time travelling episode.

Which I do love. Big episode for the Captain Swan shippers. Stellar Marty McFly jokes. Anyways, we see Emma being REALLY emotional which is a nice change. She is very touched when her mother fakes her death and when her parents are reunited and fall in love. It’s interesting because she spends a lot of time with them, but feels farther away from them than ever, because they don’t know who she is. I think this might be the real reason Emma stays in Storybrooke. Not because she missed her parents, but because she realizes how awful Regina felt when Henry didn’t know her.

Of course it wouldn’t be a season finale if all ended well, and Emma and Hook bring back two big problems. First, saving Marion, Robin’s wife, and essentially robbing Regina of her newfound relationship, just when her faith in romantic love had been restored. Secondly, winter is coming and we’re about to roll into the storyline that got everyone really really excited and then really disappointed. What comes out of that jar that Hook touched and then they accidentally went back to the present (also opening a portal in a room full of magic that even the Dark One isn’t gonna use just seems like a really bad idea) is ELSA. Yes, of Frozen fame. It was 2014, Frozen was at it’s peak.

That’s really where we are right now. We end with the formation of Elsa, a close up of a glove being pulled off and some magic hands. We see the ground freezing where she walks and her walking away. We never even saw her face. Doesn’t matter, cause that walk and that outfit and those powers, we knew who we were dealing with.

Bigfoot, Mothman and the Chupacabra may be some of the most widely known cryptids in modern society, but another fascinating cryptozoological classification of mysterious “monsters” are giant animals. Contrary to popular belief, creatures that are considered to be cryptids don’t have to be of a supernatural nature. They don’t all have to have some hidden power attributed to them. They don’t have to have the power to sense and draw out your deepest fears, to disappear on command or control the environment around them. Some of the paranormal attributes given to cryptids are most likely due to the emotional state or psychological upheaval experienced by the observer after witnessing something totally unexpected or unbelievable to them. Sometimes, they’re just big.

In 2005, George M. Eberhart wrote an article in the Journal of Scientific Exploration in which he placed cryptids (or reports of cryptids) into ten distinct categories. Eberhart explained his categorization in the article in reference to his book Mysterious Creatures: A Guide to Cryptozoology. In this article we’ll focus on the category “Undescribed, Unusual or Outsized Variations of Known Species.” These may be common animals with notable deformities or attributes. This may also include known animals that are the rare giant of that species, or suffer from a form of gigantism.

Krystyna ‘Krys’ Pawlowski and the 28-Foot Crocodile

You may have seen this photo floating around the internet and thought it was a photoshopped crocodile. However, this is not the case, and the story behind it is surprisingly terrifying.

Ron and Krystyna Pawlowski were Polish immigrants who arrived in Australia in 1949. The Pawlowskis struggled to make ends meet while caring for their children on a rural patch of land in Kaumba, in Queensland’s Gulf Country.

That all changed on a hot day in 1955. In a nightmarish scenario, three-year-old Barbera Pawlowski was playing near the water’s edge when her brother witnessed a horrific sight. A massive crocodile was stalking the toddler, and was about to make her it’s next meal.

“My brother came out and saw it and yelled “Barbara, crocodile!” and my mother grabbed a rifle and shot it between the eyes…”

Krystyna Pawlowski had never shot a rifle before in her life, but in that instant she managed to dispatch what remains to be the largest crocodile ever captured or killed in Australia, a monstrous 28-foot croc.

“One Shot” became Krystyna Pawlowski’s famous nickname, and the family found fortune hunting crocodiles.

Hogzilla and Monster Pigs

There has been a noticeable increase in the number of media stories involving wild or feral hogs in recent years. The latest story at the time of this writing is of a lethal attack in Chambers County, Texas by feral hogs on a woman arriving to work in the early hours of November 24, 2019.

“Feral swine are the same species, Sus scrofa, as pigs that are found on farms. Feral swine are descendants of escaped or released pigs. Feral swine are called by many names including; wild boar, wild hog, razorback, piney woods rooter, and Russian or Eurasian boar.

No matter the name they are a dangerous, destructive, invasive species. Feral swine were first brought to the United States in the 1500s by early explorers and settlers as a source of food. Repeated introductions occurred thereafter.

The geographic range of this destructive species is rapidly expanding and its populations are increasing across the nation.”

Feral hogs, as their domesticated counterparts, if given sufficient food and cover can grow very large. To get an idea of how potentially large a feral hog can get, here’s a domestic analogy. Big Bill was raised from the runt of the litter into a record-smashing 2,552-pound hog. Big Bill’s incredible weight was validated in the Guinness Book of World Records. Bill met an untimely death in 1933 at the age of 3 while en route to the Chicago World’s Fair. He was subsequently stuffed and put on display as his titanic carcass changed hands to various individuals willing to haul his earthly shell around for a quick buck.

Domesticated hogs are not usually raised to achieve such great weights, as an agricultural commodity, larger pigs are more difficult to house, transport and slaughter. Moreover, younger, smaller hogs are more appealing to the meat industry and have generally better quality than older, larger market hogs. However, the outbreak of African swine fever has decimated the pork industry in China, and some Chinese pork producers are beginning to raise hogs “heavy as polar bears” in order to counter the significant losses of their pigs to disease.

Hogzilla male hybrid of wild hog and domestic pig that was shot and killed by Chris Griffin in Alapaha, Georgia. On June 17, 2004, on Ken Holyoak’s fish farm and hunting reserve, Griffin shot the beast and reported it to be at least 12 feet long and over 1,000 lbs. Photos of the kill went viral and caused an overnight media sensation.

A forensic investigation of the animal was conducted revealing it was around 8.6 feet long and approximately 800 lbs. Although this diminished the initial report, “Hogzilla” was still an unusually large specimen.

Giants of the Deep: Giant Squid

Maritime legends depict all manner of sea monsters from the terrifying to the fantastic. One of the most famous monsters from the lore of seafarer’s is the Kraken. Described as a giant, multi-tentacled cephalopod that could wrap its incredibly strong arms around any vessel it desired and drag it and her occupants to the depths of the ocean. Many now believe that the Kraken of sailor’s stories are most likely sightings of the Giant Squid, genus Architeuthis.

Giant Squid usually reside deep in all of the world’s oceans, and are rarely seen near the surface. It is estimated that Giant Squid can reach lengths of over 40 feet long and they have the largest eyes in the animal world. However, being so elusive and mysterious, it is impossible to tell how big Giant Squid are capable of growing. One of the best video close encounters with the giant squid occurred on Christmas Eve 2015 in Toyama Bay, Japan (video clip below) when a juvenile made a rare visit to surface waters.

Giant Discovery Channel Hoaxes vs Real Giant Sharks

Remember when MTV played music videos? Also remember when the Discovery Channel used to feature science documentaries and not “mockumentaries” like Animal Planet’s “Mermaids” embarrassment? During “Shark Week” in 2013, the Discovery Channel aired a segment called “Megalodon: The Monster Shark Lives.” In the segment, there is a grainy photo that you may have seen floating around the internet.

The photo was alleged to be taken on December 18, 1942 near Capre Town, South Africa gathered by “Nazi archives” and displays a dorsal and tail fin behind a few U-boats with a measurement marker of 64 feet. Without knowing the documentary was fictional, many viewers assumed this photo was powerful evidence for the existence of the Megalodon in modern times. However, there were also those who questioned the photo, and ultimately proved it to be phony.

George Monbiot of the Guardian began investigating the claims made by the Discovery Channel show, and with a little help from his readers, managed to debunk the photo as a total fabrication.

“Before I wrote the article I conducted an image search, and found nothing. Now I know why. It wasn’t a still picture. A sharp-eyed reader found the frame in some footage of U-boats on Tarrif.net. The footage was shot in the Atlantic. Take a look 12 seconds in.

It’s the same shot. But guess what? No shark. And no swastika. And not off Cape Town. Or anywhere near.

I wrote to the company handling media inquiries, putting it to them that the production company which made the film, Pilgrim Studios, doctored the image and misled the audience. I have not heard back from them.”

Another photo that has been misrepresented as a Megalodon is the now-famous “Sleeper Shark” video. Having been re-edited and re-packaged by YouTube as “The Mariana Trench Megalodon,”

The Pacific Sleeper Shark

The claims that this is a shark of stupendous size comes from the assertion that the cage in question was a large diving cage when in acttuality it is a small bait cage designed to draw in sharks and fish within the range of the camera. Also, this was not filmed in the Mariana Trench, the encounter was actually recorded by a submersible in Japan’s Suruga Bay and uploaded in 2008 (see video below).

Thete are many historical accounts of giant Great Whites. In the 1870s, a 36 ft specimen was captured in southern Australian waters, near Port Fairy, and an 37 ft shark was trapped in a herring weir in New Brunswick, Canada, in the 1930s. Both of those size estimations remain unverified. However, there are still giants that roam the water to this day.

The largest Great White ever captured on video so far has been Deep Blue, and she’s our modern equivalent to a real-life “Jaws” with the exception that she’s pretty tolerable about having divers around her. Deep Blue is approximately 20 feet long and weighs an estimated 2 tons, making her the largest known Great Whites sharks alive. She’s estimated to be around 50 years old and the first documented encounter with this particular shark was about 20 years ago.

MORNING STEW #35

Information overwhelming. Coronavirus motivated directly and indirectly. Impossible to provide any semblance of order. Ergo, a Morning Stew!

I have made the decision to remain in as much as possible. The virus concerns me. Eighty four makes me susceptible, especially when tied in with my maladies.

My day yesterday would have been ok because of the Syracuse/Louisville game in the evening. The game was cancelled. The balance of the season cancelled.

Watched TV, read, and dozzed on and off all day.

Media and White House at odds as to what should be done re the virus. Better to rely on TV and the experts rather than the White House. Ineptness leads us in Washington.

Spent a bit of time reading my friend Dot Downs’ Her Soldier of the Queen. Interesting. A U.K./Ireland war tale. Much romance. I can’t wait to see Dot again. She is my age. I want to know where in her early life experiences (if correct) she picked up the love/sex scenes.

What goes around, comes around. Trump screwed China with the trade war. China reciprocated. China’s impact nowhere as harsh as Trump’s hit.

Prior to coronavirus, the U.S. imported most of the raw materials to make pharmaceuticals, especially vaccines, from China. It was reported in yesterday’s Party newspaper that China may cut or reduce their supply of raw meds to the U.S.

Are school administrators losing it?

Last friday, State Police were called to the Union School District in Rimersburg, Pennsylvania, after a “known” juvenile allegedly robbed the school cafeteria of a juice box valued at 80 cents.

Paid leave during the virus crisis under consideration. A good idea!

Problem is where the money is to come from.

Trump proposes a “payroll tax holiday.” He is wrong again. Such a holiday would hurt Social Security and Medicare beneficiaries. It would also inure to the benefit of the rich. It would provide them with more disposable income than the poor.

How long will it take to make up for the recent market losses. History the best indication.

The 1987 Black Monday crash was 508 points. Market lower back then. The 508 points was equal to 22 percent of the market.

Took 2 years to recover.

The Great Depression of 1929 took 20 years to recover. And then only because of World War II which created employment for everyone.

It will take a long time for this market to return.

The American people are afraid. Properly so. Especially when our leader does not seem to know what he is doing.

Our world is closing down around us. Sport seasons and big time frames have been instituted. Some extremely quick. The Big East Tournament an example. The League called an end to the season at the half time of the St. John/Creighton game yesterday.

Sport stadiums, Broadway, political rallies, etc. The lights have gone dark.

Some do not want to recognize the reality of the virus nor the ineptness of Trump. One of the comments to my blog recently read, “Why is everybody trying to hurt him when all he is trying to do is what’s best for the country, not for himself…..The more they try, the more ‘we real people’ can see what a Hoax it really is.”

Is Steve Bannon or his thinking still involved in U.S. governing? He has been out of the White House for at least 2 years. I recall back in 2017 when he was part of Trump’s staff saying the deconstruction of America was “a daily fight.”

Everytime Trump or one of his cohorts speak of “testing,” the American people are assured “soon.” We are still waiting. When? We will never get a handle on the problem in the U.S. till we know what the numbers are and where.

As the virus becomes more acute, the number needing medical attention rises. We do not have enough hospital beds nor ventilators. Few plans are being made as to what to do. A few areas are making plans to go to tents.

While all this nothing is going on, Trump this morning was attacking Obama via tweeting.

We are still sitting on our asses re testing. Not my fault or yours. Donald’s.

Tell me why New York’s Governor Cuomo has drive through testing going on in New Rochelle. Trump has not implemented the procedure anywhere in the U.S. Where did Cuomo get the test kits? He seems to know more than the President.

Yesterday, Tom Hanks and his wife tested positive for coronavirus. Today, Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau’s wife Sophie.

Why is Donald not testing? We know he has had 2-3 contacts.

Perhaps he does not want to know. And, doesn’t care if he infects anyone.

Trump lied several times in his Oval Office report to the nation. The 2 most egregious included testing.

One his statement that all people coming in from Europe were being tested “Heavily tested.” In fact, there was and is no system set up to so test.

The other is that the testing is “going very smoothly.” Of course it is. There is no testing! How can there be any screw-ups?

Dr. Fauci reported yesterday that the system is “a failing…..admit it!”

Another Governor taking the bull by the horns is California’s Newscom. He signed an order to take over California hotels for use of coronavirus patients. Solves the anticipated shortage of hospital beds problem.

New York’s Mayor de Blasio declared a state of emergency for the City yesterday.

Many universities are closing down. Going off line. Beside class room lectures, all activities canceled till April 6.

California finally finished its count. As anticipated, Sanders won. He took in 34 percent of the vote as opposed to Biden’s 27 percent.

Room was found this week for a bit of news re global warming.

Polar ice caps are melting 6 times faster than in the 1990’s. The loss in Greenland and Antarctica is accelerating.

Your cell phone is “dirty.” Possible carrier of the virus. A wipe with a product having 70 percent isopropyl alcohol recommended. Clorox suggested. Wipe easy.

I have been suggesting for 2 years another recession was going to hit. Thought it would last year. I was wrong.

My motivation was two-fold. The banks were playing the same games they did in 2008 and the banks were losing funds.

The Fed saw this happening. They began playing the Repo game. I first reported on Repos 2 months ago.

Banks sometimes do not have enough money. If all depositors wanted their money back at the same time, banks doors would close. There would not be sufficient funds.

The problem especially concerning smaller banks.

To avoid bank defaults, the Fed would lend money today to a bank and the bank would pay the money back tomorrow. Simple. Then the monies were probably reborrowed for another day on the tomorrow.

The amounts were relatively insignificant. In the millions. Then billions.

Beginning to day, in the trillions!

Bigger banks involved. Money needed for longer periods. Twenty four hour rule out the window. Now banks can “borrow” for up to a 3 month period before repaying.

What is happening is no less than a bank bailout. A bailout to Wall Street.

Who bails us out?

South Carolina’s James Clyburn turned the Democratic primary in Biden’s direction. He is an elderly black man. He was there with Martin Luther King Jr. Majority Leader today of the House of Representatives. One of the most respected men in Washington.

An Axios HBO show will be run this sunday at 6 pm.

In a portion of the show already released, Clyburn said, The U.S. “could very well go the way of Germany in the 1930’s.”

I have been saying it for 2 years.

Ian Welsh is a Canadian blogger who I frequently read. In a blog published 3/12 titled Coronavirus Bungling Is What We Voted For, Welsh wrote, “Donald Trump is a blittering idiot and incompetent at the actual mechanics of running a government. This is not to deny his other competencies at bullying and running a campaign, but he’s seriously mentally deficient. He is bungling the Coronavirus response. That’s going to lead to a lot of dead people, including a lot of old people who, forgive me, voted for him.”

Zeroing in on Keys coronavirus cases. It must safely be assumed they are on the rise. However, not all the sick are being tested. Actually few.

Bob Eadie is the Director of the Florida Keys Chapter of the Florida Health Department. A full time job. He has held it since 2007. One problem. He is not a doctor. He’s a lawyer.

The past few weeks he has been the politician…..Speaking as Washington and Tallahassee do. Not as a Dr. Fauci.

For example, he claims tests are available. All one has to do is go to a doctor. Then be directed to the Health Department for a test.

The Health Department cannot test everyone. Would result in an “overload.” It would be a “wasting of resources.”

So some tests are being done. How many, we do not know.

The reason we do not know is Eadie cannot tell us till Tallahassee gives him permission.

So much for transparency.

Dana Milbank is the much respected Washington Post columnist. His most recent column was titled: “Got A Medical Question? Ask Dr. Trump!”

Cartoons were big time in my youth…..1930’s and 1940’s. Especially Walt Disney ones.

The Disney ones generally closed with Porky Pig saying: That’s all folks!
