I have a question for you guys.
I was rewatching Yosano's backstory episode (and cried again. what of it?) but something this time caught my attention.
In the scene where Fukuzawa and Mori are fighting and Fukuzawa angrily tells him his plans "lack humanity"... is the word they both use... not "kokoro"?
It would appear to be, from this manga translation. If that really is the choice of word, that's really interesting, because one of irl Natsume-sensei's most well-known books is the novel Kokoro.
What does this mean? Is Mori really following the plan Natsume laid out for them? Is he derailing from the initial plan with the exclusion of "heart/humanity"? Did Natsume intend for "heart" to be sacrificed in the name of defense? Or is this conflict, with "heart" at the center, exactly what Natsume needed for this plan to work?
And on Mori's end: this isn't his usual cold, impeccable logic. This is anger that Fukuzawa is getting in the way. More than that, it almost seems to me like Mori has a paranoid streak. Check this out here:
To be quite honest with you, Mori sometimes makes weird calls that imo aren't the best decisions - and they're all out of some fear he has, typically over the protection of the city and the country. Mori's takeover of the Port Mafia is seen as overall a good thing - because the previous boss grew increasingly paranoid and started ordering unnecessary violence, something Mori himself wishes to avoid whenever possible. Yet his projection onto Dazai causes issues during the Mimic incident - sure it was logically sound, but he lost Dazai for it. Was it really then the best solution there was? And what about Yosano - so caught up in what she could prove and what she meant for the war effort that he failed to consider her taking drastic action out of sheer despair? It's interesting that Mori, who advises others on not letting their fears and emotions get in the way of strategy, is prone to the same thing at times. Might he get worse at this kind of miscalculation? It'd be altogether kind of tragic if he messes up later in the story out of paranoia, considering his predecessor's legacy...
Edit: I changed the last bit, as it's left somewhat unclear if part of Mori's reasoning in the whole Mimic incident was to get Dazai away from him - in fact, it's likely that wasn't the case at all and Dazai was just saying this to intentionally get under his skin. Unfortunately I am a bit of dumbass who misinterpreted this line on first read, and now read it differently:
He's sticking with the logicality of it - one person's life for a gifted business permit is a worthwhile sacrifice, even if it drove away his right hand man. Either way, whether it's projection (Dazai is just like me, so he'll understand) or paranoia (he is going to inevitably kill me someday - which is still kinda projection imo) or some combination of the two - I think the original point still stands: maybe focusing all your efforts on ensuring you're always prepared for some eventuality or other means you overlook things you deem less important or irrelevant. Maybe removing heart from your decisions... isn't actually the best call in the end.

An episode dedicated to Kasumi's feelings about his role and his past as a leader.

“Toshi-san, there’s this interesting rumor I’ve heard from an older lady.”
It’s hard to get the intonation right… The emphasis should be here…
“Kondo-san, I’ll stand guard here! I won’t let anyone escape!”
Kaede
Papa, are you playing as a woman?
Tsubaki
Or are you playing a guy?
Sakura
Which is it~?
Kasumi
Uh… Actually…
Kasumi
…Y-Yukio-san, this… is a mistake, right…?
Yukio
It’s not.
Kasumi
Eeh!? B-but I can’t believe I’m the only double cast…

As for you, I wanted to see you play as both Kimigiku and Todo Heisuke.
You played Lady Shizuka in “Traces of a Dream” already, and just playing the beautiful Kimigiku is boring, isn’t it?
And I also want as many people as possible for the Ikedaya incident scene.
Kasumi
No, no, no, no way! I wouldn’t care much if it’s just a female only role, but I’ve been blank for too long and yet you already want me in the Ikedaya fight…!
It’s like a neighborhood kid getting caught in a gang leader fight!

(In the other play I acted as Lady Shizuka after a long while of not playing female characters, and I got a lot of compliments from a lot of people. I'm looking forward to playing Kimigiku.)
(The only problem is Todo Heisuke… Hopefully… I’ll get the hang of it after some practice.)
(Now that I think about it, I remember the first time I was on stage there were three sword fights, it was a mess…)
“...Haah, haah, my bad…”
I’d be on my knees at first, it was hard to get up.
My body ached everywhere and my body felt heavy like steel.
It was as if the gravity only changed around me and pulled me down.
“...If the leader’s gonna be like this, there’s nothing to discuss, shouldn’t we just replace this guy?”
Syu-san’s bluntness and arrogance was nothing out of the ordinary, but it struck my heart this time.
I was pathetic and remorseful, I couldn’t even get myself to face them.
It was the first time I was assigned a role where I had to fight.
No matter how much I practiced, no matter how slow I took my time, I couldn’t reenact the movements properly at all.
I looked like I was doing a Lantern festival dance instead of having the form of a swordsman.
It’s no wonder that Syu-san, who taught it, was dismayed.
“Alright well, let’s leave the fight scene at that for today before you get hurt.”
I heard Yukio-san’s gentle voice interrupt and just bowed my head, devastated by my own shortcomings.
“...”
Yuzo looked at me like he wanted to tell me something, but with the state of my mind, I couldn't take another word, I left the rehearsal room as if to escape.
“...Today’s the day I’ll get it right.”
The next morning, I was determined and went to the rehearsal room early.
“Well, aren't you early?”
“Eh, Yuzo? Why are you…”
Immediately after that, he threw a wooden sword at me and Yuzo told me to prepare myself.
“Get in form.”
Subconsciously, I handled the wooden sword as Syu-san had taught me.
“Try to move the same way as I do.”
“But, Yuzo, your role…”
“I already got your movements memorized in my head. Try to keep up the pace.”
“—T-thanks.”
Repeating it over and over and adjusting the speed, eventually I got it right for the first time.
“Yes! Finally!”
I was able to keep up with the other members at the same pace.
The joy of being able to do something I couldn’t before welled up deep inside me.
“This is just the beginning. Go show Syu-san, that this role is yours alone.”
“...Yeah!”
Yuzo usually only smacktalks me, but he helps me out so casually like this when I’m going through something difficult.
He really is a reliable childhood friend.
As a way to show my gratitude for being helped like this,
I definitely made that role mine, and mine alone.
I made up my mind and got back into the flow of things.
Kasumi
(Back then, I felt like I had to do my absolute best as the leader of the Spring Troupe.)
(...I wonder if Sakuya-kun also had a tough time with fight scenes.)
Rather, the upcoming play, Sakuya-kun might come to see it…!?
(He adores me as the first Spring Troupe leader, I can’t just show Sakuya-kun an unseemly sword fight.)
Sigh…
(I got no choice, I’ll just have to suck it up and ask Yuzo for help.)
(In the story, Kimigiku supports the Shinsengumi from the shadows, meanwhile Todo Heisuke leaves the Shinsengumi later.)
(It overlaps with my desire to support MANKAI Company in the shadows in different ways despite my departure from the theater.)

Overanalyzing The Juniper Tree concerning Wick
HELLO EVERYONE! This is my second Wick theory posted here and I'm glad that I decided to do The Juniper Tree because Oh My God. There's SO much packed into this fairytale.
Long post ahead.
Anyway, for some context: what is The Juniper Tree? Well, it's an old, dark German fairytale that is featured in Journal Page 29 (aka the one related to Caleb)
Well, technically the actual fairytale isn't word-for-word written like how it is in Wick, but still. It's literally a variant of The Juniper Tree. Most people assume this is a poem made by Hellbent Games themselves just to be like “Yeah Mary killed Caleb lol” but it's a full fairytale published by the Brothers Grimm.
So, what are the themes, before we get into all the passages? Well...
Child abuse, murder, CANNIBALISM, and biblical symbolism. Very much in line with Wick, especially Caleb. Be warned, however, the cannibalism thing is an absolute jumpscare if you're reading it for the first time.
Anyway let's get started.
Alright, first things first is that the mom dies during childbirth and another woman (the stepmom) takes her place. Do I think this has any heavy relevance to Wick? Not really. It could be symbolic with Mary, as in once she had Caleb the past her “died”.
The next part about the stepmom loving her daughter but hating her stepson to the point of abuse suggests something not many consider... Caleb, like Tim and Tom, was abused by Mary as well. You'd think for seeming to be the golden child of the family, Mary wouldn't do that to Caleb, but expectations aren't always reality. I mean, none of the items relating to Caleb mentions anything about Mary caring for him, and Old Man Edwards even talks about how Mary seemingly neglected all of her kids. Of course, it'd extend to Caleb.
Another thing is that “the Evil One” is referenced throughout the story. This is a title of, obviously, the devil. Considering that throughout Wick, there are implications of another supernatural entity, likely a demon, haunting the Weaver family before their deaths... yeah, this is just more evidence.
And now we come to the son's... very fucked up death. This reminds me of how it's sometimes theorized that before being buried alive, Caleb had been struck in the head by the shovel. Like, the “DIG THIS!” achievement's picture shows Caleb being hit with, you guessed it, a shovel. If you look closely at Caleb's model's face, he looks to have some scarring on his face.
Another thing about this scene is the son saying “Mother, how angry you look. Yes, give me an apple.” almost feels... defiant in a way? Even if he's always afraid, he still fights back in his own way. This could be how Caleb was as well.
We now have a name for the daughter: Marlene. Or well, in the original English translation, it's Marlinchen, but I'll still use Marlene for simplicity.
This part of the story possibly gives insight into the aftermath of Caleb's disappearance/death. Caleb was likely not fully buried but still died, which left Lillian (who is obviously in the place of Marlene, she is the only daughter after all) to find the body. Being younger, and also the closest to Caleb via the version of the fairytale in the Journal, was devastated.
And then comes the... really fucked up part.
I don't have much to discuss for this, since this part was seemingly removed in the Journal's version. But seriously, this is actually messed up. The dad, largely absent until now, unknowingly EATS HIS OWN SON. The absence of the dad certainly fits with John being absent during the war.
First off is Marlene gathering her brother's bones and tying them up in her (best) scarf before lying them beneath the juniper tree. Like the stepmom killing the son, this matches up with the Journal's version of the fairytale. Lillian likely reburied Caleb, but while Mary was malevolent in burying him alive, Lillian put thought and care into burying Caleb's body as seen in the rags he's wearing in-game. (Another thing is the “crying tears of blood” which makes me think of Lillian's design in No Way Out.)
Second off is the firey entrance of a bird (specified to be a crow in the Journal's version). Fire obviously reminds us of Mary's death, which we will get to later. The bird, if it isn't obvious enough, is the son reborn, and sings atop a goldsmith's house his sad tale. This brings us back to the start of our journey, the Journal's version of this line of dialogue.
I'll skip some of this, but in short, the bird goes to three locations. A goldsmith, a shoemaker, and a mill. Each time, he sings his tale to the people there, who want him to sing it just once again. He's defiant, telling them he'll only do it if they give him something in return.
The goldsmith gives him a golden chain, the shoemaker gives him a pair of red shoes, and the mill workers give him a millstone. The first two are easy, but what in the world is a millstone? Well, it's a stone used for grinding grain and apparently corn. We'll see what it's used for in a short bit.
The bird returns to his father's house! As shown, the dad is happy while the stepmom and Marlene are upset (for different reasons). After this, the bird sets himself on the juniper tree and sings his tale again.
Of course, the stepmom is practically losing it due to the presence of the bird and his singing, but the dad thinks otherwise. He decides to go out and see the bird despite his wife's anxiety.
Quite an interesting line, considering Mary's fate.
Once the bird finishes, he drops the golden chain as a gift to his dad. In response, the dad goes back inside and despite his pleasant encounter, the stepmom is terrified to the point of falling onto the floor. Holy shit. Anyway, the bird sings once more.
Marlene decides that she'll go out and see if the bird will give her something as well. And as the bird finishes, he drops the pair of red shoes down to her as a gift. Marlene became content and happy, putting on the new shoes and going back into the house.
In response, the stepmom...
The stepmom goes out to see if she'll be given something as well. Technically, it did happen. The bird dropped the millstone onto her, instantly killing her. We're back to Mary's death. And even after this, everything related to fire rises, and from that appears the son, no longer a bird, stew, or a corpse.
I don't think this is a “Caleb set the fire” type of thing. There's more evidence for the twins and the pastor anyway. What I do think this could lead us to is that Caleb at least saw it as a ghost.
Besides that, the line of the dad, son, and Marlene happily going inside and eating is the ending to The Juniper Tree. Which marks my ending to this post!

yakuza 3 (sort of) done! thoughts under the cut cos they got quite long. they're a lot more coherent than my kiwami 2 ones cos i made them along the way rather than in a feverish mess at the end, though ofc they contain spoilers for 3 and ig gaiden??
overall thoughts, it's messy and weird and makes some Choices, but it's not a bad game, and the people who write it off as being shit are, imho, wrong. once i got into it i liked it, it introduced some great characters, had some really fun moments, and i'm gonna miss the morning glory kids (yes even riona).
if you're looking at this like when did you change the difficulty??? the bit where you have to run away from the police at millenium tower, fuck that bit so hard, none of the other chases gave me trouble but that one ughhhhh
also i neglected haruka i'm sorry
the combat is harder and more tedious, and i can see why it puts people off, but i find pulling off the combos and counters way more satisfying as a result. like, i tiger dropped lau ka long to finish that fight and it felt *so* good, way more than ending fights with heat actions or whatever has done in previous games. having said that the blocking oh jesus christ the BLOCKING
it’s the place we get the most on kashiwagi pre-y0 especially kiryu’s opinion of him (including the iconic lines about reimen) so you can’t knock it for that.
rikiya buddy i love you but wtf was that substory with natsumi. actually why is he suddenly a dick in all of his side content???? (i know he’s confrontational and that’s just how he is but idk, smth about how he is in the side content feels different). he’s rude to utabori to his face (despite kiryu repeatedly telling him not to), when he meets natsumi again he’s like yo i kept this necklace why are you in tokyo you don’t fit in here come back to okinawa with me, like ????? she clearly has a life she’s built up there (not a good one, i don’t think, but still) and they might have known each other when they were kids but we never get her side of the story on that, only rikiya’s. idk. it’s one of the first things he says to her, that’s a neon red flag if ever i’ve seen one.

we had a second majima-no-nii-san! from hamazaki of all people! tho having said that i think he was being sardonic. like, he never says it again, and is generally kind of like that. he’ll use polite forms but he’s never being *polite*. lowkey obsessed with his hand on majima’s shoulder in that scene and what it says about his character and their relationship up to that point and how majima has ended up in this kind of position *again*. kiryu leaving - as it always does - fucked so many people over it’s not even funny.
some of the translations bother me. as an english script it’s for the most part pretty coherent and works well enough on its own, but in combination with the japanese it sometimes deviates in ways that change character moments or even just feel weird. like the addition of the puns in the seven mysteries substories is fun, very ace attorney, but sometimes it feels like they step too far (‘getting tight in your britches!’ for ビビ���た like ???? even ignoring the japanese what is that supposed to meannnnn)
specific moments i was thinking of were the really early line where taichi is like 晩ごはんまだぁ？ and they add in an unnecessary ‘i thought curry was supposed to be easy!’ in the english which then undermines later when they all sit down to eat and are like カレーだ！ like they didn’t actually know what was for dinner. another one is when kiryu leaves rikiya behind in okinawa and tells haruka that he can’t let him come (in various ways, three times). in the english they shake it up a bit by adding ‘it’s my burden to bear’ WHICH i’ll fully admit flows better and is a very kiryu thing to say but i think it shifts the tone of that scene from worry to responsibility? in a way that doesn’t feel quite right in context of the story as a whole. last one where mine calls kiryu a coward when he’s leaving after showing whatever was left of kanda in that box. again, it flows better and lines up with kiryu’s behaviour in later games but doesn’t feel quite right and i think it changes the point mine was trying to make there. there's also the minefield about how mine expresses his feelings about daigo right at the end. BUT i’m a learner this isn’t my job what do i know. they worked hard and faults aside it’s a fun read and they also had to deal with that fuck-awful section of exposition from the politician so no blame here. it’s not like the other games don’t have this, it just feels especially weird in this one to me.
i loved the little wrestling bit. it’s not perfect but it has the kind of heart and good intentions that makes those sections (and yakuza 3 as a whole) really enjoyable for me.
objectively very funny that the text you get congratulating you on all the revelations is from kaoru, and that she’s like hey your blog was very funny, go see my friend bob utsunomiya for your reward. i know it’s mostly game mechanics to make it make sense but is it not the funniest thing to imagine a. that kaoru knows a bob utsunomiya (how did they meet??? why???) and b. that on her breaks between Mystery Police Stuff she’s refreshing kiryu’s blog like what dumb shit is this idiot up to now asdfghjkl tbf his blog can’t be hard to find, it’s literally ‘day in the life of the dragon of dojima’ it’s a miracle he gets anything done ever with how bad he is at being on the downlow
standing on the morning glory beach, especially in the evening/at night and looking up at the sky while listening to the waves roll in is so calming, the first time i got to do it i stayed there for like ten minutes just chilling
some of the animation is genuinely really really good, like saki’s eyes shaking in fear or kiryu’s cheek twitch when he finds out about morning glory, or mine on finding out daigo's alive. idk how much is the work of the remaster and how much was originally there but i really like it
the last three chapters are such whiplash cos it’s like sad, sad, very sad, bulls! sad, very very sad, sad, jet! thumbs up! sad, sad, ANGRY, there is no change in the plan, sad, sad, on the roof, sad, sad, MACHO, things are gonna be fine! oh wait sad sa- please mr richardson they’re trying to have a moment -d sad sad surprise! murder! surprise! alive! done. you know?
idk if i was just hormonal or emotional but saki calling out to nakahara really got to me for some reason. her first word after years of silence was ‘dad’, and that hit me in a way i wasn’t expecting even tho i knew it was coming.

that last section was really fun to play for me (aside from that first little bit going up the first couple of floors of the hospital), the music’s great, the combat had (mostly) good pacing, the fights felt challenging in a good way, yeah i was all for it! reinforced for me how much i like mine as a character and wish we’d got to see more of him (but hey, look, if andre richardson survived the fall...?). like, the moment he realises daigo is still alive - and that he was about to kill the man he love- ahem sorry admired, so much - is seared into my brain.

Not what you asked @olloollo but here's the martial arts and adjacent films that live rent free in my head
I'll watch anything by Sammo Hung. Always entertaining but mostly because I love Wheels on Meals. Not the least because, as I've written before, it has a scene on (ON!!!!!!) Sagrada Familia.
Similarly anything by or with Stephen Chow.
I keep meaning to watch more films by Xu Haofeng. And I really wish someone might translate some of his books into english. I was so obsessed with The Final Master (sometimes just The Master) I wound up via tenuous IG connections tracking down the owner of a record label in China to get a copy of the soundtrack. So that's a must but maybe even more so is Judge Archer which is the last movie I actually bought a physical copy of. It conspicoulsy references and plays with Spaghetti Western man with no name tropes. Also the "close-up" duels/challenges between masters are unlike anything I've seen elsewhere.
As for unlike anything, let's spare a moment for Six-String Samurai one part samurai flick of course, one part Road Warrior, one part Wizard of Oz, one part The Stand and it's a comedy. Its star and co-writer Jeffrey Falcon is a bit of a mystery and occasional internet rabbit hole of mine: apparently chucking the movie business and maybe possibly now married in China, or a maybe a monk in a buddhist monastery or maybe working security at LAX. He's also supposed to have some good fight scenes against fellow anglo in Hong Kong actioners Cynthia Rothrock which I do keep meaning to check out.
Another mystery is Man of Tai Chi which may not break any new ground but has some decent fight scenes. But did you know Keanu Reaves directed this movie?!?! Did you know he casts himself as and plays the oddly affectless anglo baddie typical in a Chinese martial arts flick? Not sure why I don't see this mentioned more.
More traditionally Five Deadly Venoms. Of course, right! But also from around the same time Black Lizard which brings a more ghostly vibe to the action. Which is a perfect jumping off point to a double feature of Legend of The Mountain and A Chinese Ghost Story two radically different takes on similar material straight out of Strange Tales From A Chinese Studio.
And how about a wuxia flick with almost no fighting? Aren't there all sort of tales of masters staring at each other wordlessly as they stage their fight in their heads and then they just walk away? Or maybe something closer to if you haven't bested your opponent in three moves you have essentially lost? Regardless Hsiao-Hsien Hou's The Assassin based on a 17th century story/legend is a revelation I long to see on the big screen.
Honorable mentions to War of The Arrows: the drama portions are a bit slow but the chase that takes up the last hour maybe hour and a half of the movie is for me some of the best action as story outside of Fury Road. And Sword of Doom: holy shit is that a movie that messes with your expectations in the best possible way. I saw it leave a whole sold out theater slack jawed and thrilled to be so and have not stopped thinking about it since.

Imho the party thing is an extremely clumsily written attempt to show that Derek loves her swan or no swan. The food bit specifically always made me laugh as a kid because he sounds like he's concerned he may poison her on accident (... would you serve this to a swan...?) Like it's not swan themed food, it's food a swan can eat. It also bears mentioning that swans were associated with his (and hers, there's swan stuff at the baby party iirc) kingdom. That's why the locket has a swan on it (and she seemed perfectly happy to wear it again, even after everything), and why the golden curtain weights during the ball have swans on them, and other smaller background details. So maybe they were animals she loved before and that's why Rothbart chose a swan? Maybe the dress wasn't even created by him and he just made a copy of the one she was expected to wear. After all, he also replicates her crown; wedding dresses could be made well in advance and she was engaged since birth.
Also, credit where credit is due, Derek didn't know what the ball was for, his mother lied to him about it because she knew he wanted Odette and no one else. And then Uberta showed up to the wedding with A SWAN SHAPED HAIRDO XD
Like to be clear I still think he's a terrible boyfriend but the party comes off as more clumsy than anything else and certain things weren't him lol
(Also apparently it's Odette who wanted a swan armed force right at the end so this whole bit is a mess xD)
That's the thing though: if Rothbart did indeed choose to make Odette a swan cause swans are the kingdom's international animal or something like that, that really still shouldn't make Odette ok with the trauma 😂
Everything about Derek and Odette's romance is clumsily written. It's so sad cause the first song and the entire opening is SO GOOD and memorable. It could have been such a good movie, but they mucked it up xD
Also, while I do agree that Derek doesn't know EXACTLY what the ball is for, Uberta only says it's for "a few friends, and their daughters" secretly at one point, but he still seems to think he's running the show cause he starts saying HE doesn't want red roses, HE wants WHITE roses as if he knows the ball is FOR HIM... so either he does know what his mom is planning, or he thinks his opinion triumphs his mother's despite HER planning the ball. Derek doesn't come off looking good in either scenario xD
I took a look at the movie to find all the swan references and there aren't actually that many in total. Definitely not enough for me to think that swans were particularly important to the kingdoms, just some hee-hee ha-ha foreshadowing by the artists xD
And it wasn't Odette who wanted a swan-armed air force, that was Derek. Puffin says, and I quote: "The prince wants a fighting air force." I checked the scene to make sure, and he says prince and not princess :)
I wish you were right though, that would be a bit more evil and hilarious if Rothbart chose a swan because Odette loved swans or the kingdom had a special bond to swans or something. That would be so good xD
In the long run though, this is just a kids movie and we can analyze and interpret everything, but let's be honest... the developers did not put nearly as much thought into all these tiny details as we do. Uberta's swan shaped hair near the end was 100% just for the sake of the joke of her shadow looking like "the great animal" to make Bromley faint with fear. And they chose a swan cause irony, there's most likely nothing deeper to it than that, but it's fun to think of theories and interpretations! 😊
Also, sidenote: Apparantly Derek's kingdom is named Chamberg...?
As ANOTHER sidenote... Derek says he wants the music to be: "Rubato, soft and graceful." That... is not what rubato means.
Rubato is translated to "stolen time", the best definition of rubato in music is the freedom or flexibility to choose your own tempo for a part or a phrase of music.
So he also doesn't know what the fuck he's talking about despite Rogers being his musician tutor. Nevermind the fact that Rogers is right when he makes the tuba play when Derek asks what Rogers thinks a swan sounds like. Swans may LOOK elegant, but their voices certainly aren't x'D

i think tumblr is messing w me again 🤨 "bad request" let me talking about raiden pls. sent an ask about being distraught by the scene where raiden begs snake not to leave him alone in mgs4. that scene nearly made me cry bc raiden is just. so vulnerable AND SNAKE JUST LEAVES HIM CMON MAN. other than that idk if you play pokemon or not but do you have any idea what to do with 5 shiny larvitar because i dont.
unfortunately i do not play pokemon and i have no idea what to do with five shiny larvitar especially on account of i have no idea what those even are. my pokemon knowledge is very limited and due to a wild turn of events most of it i literally only know because of metal gear. so yeah.
and YEAH dear god that scene haunts me like the whole thing is just so awful. Except for sunny. Sunny is never awful and she's so good in that scene. she is just trying to protect her big brother!!!!!! (this is one of my core beliefs about metal gear btw in case you somehow didn't come across it. raiden and sunny are siblings. i don't care that they aren't blood related or that he's two decades older than she is. they are siblings. i know siblings when i see them and those two... they just are.)
but aside from sunny being the smartest person in the room and also the best kid ever, there is nothing about that scene that doesn't torment me
first of all snake why the fuck would you think it was a good idea to take a heavily injured man who is still recovering from the fact that HIS OWN BODY (which isn't even really his own, dear god i could get into that for paragraphs and paragraphs) TRIED TO KILL HIM back onto the battlefield. he almost died and he's recovering in a body that doesn't belong to him and is 3/4ths of the REASON he almost died leave him alone. he's practically your nephew would it kill you to act like you give a fuck.
thankfully sunny puts a quick stop to that (i think about how this small child with anxiety put herself in between her big brother and solid snake all the time i think about 'no! jack can't go. he needs to rest!' all the time) but raiden has no self-preservation left!!!!!!! he wants to die!!!!!!!!!!!! and the poor guy has just had it hammered into him over and over again that as far as most people he knows are concerned he's worth exactly as much as an inanimate object, his value is in how well he can kill and the moment he loses that he'll be worthless, he's just expendable, and as if being told that constantly wasn't enough they literally cut him apart and rebuilt him with a body created solely to fight. he's been so dehumanized at this point and his dynamic with snake is already so fucked up that he's just like sure why the fuck not this is all i'm good for anyway so <3
and then of course snake is like wait actually no which would be good on its own except of course the way he goes about it is a disaster. i mean first of all this guy who KNOWS the deal with rose is like hmm okay but consider: rose. which is a whole lot. said it before and i'll say it again
like no wonder raiden makes this face. i would too
and then the freakout continues but he can't even stand up on his own and he has to use snake entirely for support and he looks so young and like he's about to cry and you know what he has a goddamn right to. but then in a move that probably wasn't meant to be symbolic but is in my heart snake fails to support him and he collapses. and he just pours out his heart and begs not to be left alone and he's obviously so scared like augh man who can't figure out what he exists for except to be a weapon not being allowed to fight of course he's terrified of being left alone he can't do the only thing anyone's ever told him he's good for and i feel like because he's sick and scared and still kinda dying this translates in his head as a 'he was going to let me help but then he realized how useless i actually am’ thing. being forcibly converted into a cyborg did not help our boy much in terms of black and white thinking about himself as a weapon. fuck the patriots.
so he pours his heart out like this and is holding on to snake and pleading with him not to leave him alone (like practically everyone else in his life)
and does snake reassure him? NO. he just stares at him for like idk ten seconds and then says 'this is my fight. my destiny' and that's it. no sympathy, no reassurance, nothing. bare minimum could've looked at this guy who just fucking shattered in front of you and begged you not to leave him alone and said SOMETHING kind but nope and as soon as he says that raiden just closes his eyes and passes out like he only managed to stay awake for this
and the resignation kills me
like the sheer hopelessness of it all. just kind of this oh. okay. [passes out because what else is there to do]
like it genuinely has the vibes of he was FORCING himself to stay awake and try to stand and pretend he was fine because he has nothing left except to fight and if he can't do that then there's nothing left for him at all (y'know, from his perspective) and its explicit canon that he really looks up to snake so this whole scene is just him desperately trying to keep the one person whose approval he still craves from leaving him behind even if that means he has to destroy himself in the process and the moment he realizes that nothing he says or does is going to change anything and he's going to be left there out of commission unable to do the one thing that people have wanted from him his entire life, the thing the body he's trapped in was literally made for, he just... gives up.
and it fucking destroys me.
as you can probably tell. this scene makes me crazy. i've written way too much about it and i regret none of it whatsoever.
on a slightly happier note this bit also feels so symbolic to me
he can't fight. he can't even stand. and the only person supporting him is the one who couldn't care less if he can fight or not. the one who's spent this whole time just wanting him to be okay, to hell with anything else
he doesn't see it because he's practically incapable of imagining anyone could actually care about him at this point so i cut him some slack on it and this definitely isn't what snake meant but he does have a family and that family is sunny.
sorry this took me almost three hours to answer the problem is that as previously stated this scene makes me deeply insane and i have so so so many thoughts on it and so in order to keep this answer even remotely coherent i had to take breaks to let the emotions calm down ghlsdkjfdhg

"The Legend of Hercules"
This movie has a 5% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, and made $61.3 million on a $70 million budget. It came out the same year as the Dwayne Johnson Hercules movie and is considered its inferior. I'm going to watch it because I make poor life choices.
My thoughts under the cut.
We open to a battle in "Argos, ancient Greece, 1200 BC." This will not stop them from using Heracles' Roman name. The CGI is really fake, and the fighting throughout this movie does the whole 300 slo-mo/speed-up thing.
We meet Amphitryon, who in this version is an evil king. I guess. I dunno, he's the one attacking, but he suggests to Argos' king that they have a one-on-one fight so that no one else dies, which is pretty reasonable for an evil overlord. And the fight is cool, so I mostly come away thinking that he's a badass.
Amphitryon likes war, but his wife Alcmene thinks that war is bad. She's also really religious, but Amphitryon doesn't believe in the gods because...reasons. Is it just me, or do a lot of mythological movies go for a "theism vs. atheism" thing? I don't think that it works as well as Hollywood writers assume.
So Alcmene prays to Hera to stop her husband. Then Hera...possesses a priestess? who wasn't there before? and says that Alcmene's son will deliver the land from Amphitryon. If she doesn't want to sleep with Amphitryon to get this son, Hera will let her sleep with Zeus instead.
What.
I mean...she sounds sad about it, crying that Zeus has "betrayed me through his lust for you." But like...this is Hera. "Weepy" is not the reaction that I expect when confronted by Zeus' newest and oh-so-maimable love interest. Any other mythical inaccuracies pale compared to this.
In the myths, Heracles has a good stepdad and a bad stepmom. Why switch it around? I guess because this movie wants to be Gladiator, and we need an evil king for that.
This next scene is really weird. Alcmene is in bed. There's a flash of lightning and a bunch of wind, and Alcmene starts...having sex with it, apparently, even though she's still dressed. Then Amphitryon comes in, sees Alcmene and starts screaming "WHERE IS HE?!?! WHERE IS HE HIDING?!?!?!" Like, he saw Alcmene writhing on the bed, fully clothed and apparently alone, and somehow concluded that a.) an actual, two-person sex act was going on, but b.) her lover is a normal human who is just...invisible or something? I guess he knows the story of Gyges.
Seriously, it's a plot point that he thinks Hercules was fathered by somebody else but isn't sure. Which is weird, because we've established that he and Alcmene aren't having sex these days, and he seemed positive that he walked in on her cheating with seemingly no one, so...I don't know, man. This is a mess.
The baby is born! Because even though Amphitryon thinks Alcmene is unfaithful, he didn't kill or exile her. He's really bad at this "tyrant" thing. Anyway, he names the baby Alcides and says that he'll never be as good as his brother Iphicles, but Alcmene privately calls him "Hercules" because that's what Hera called him.
Side notes: "Hercules" is translated as "gift of Hera" when it's supposed to be "glory." Also, since Hera is basically a Fairy Godmother in this movie, it seems kind of stuck up of her to name the kid after herself. Why not have Alcmene choose the name?
As mentioned, Iphicles is in this movie, but he's a few years older than Hercules. Chiron is also there, as...Alcmene's tutor? Despite her being an adult woman? He's just a dude with a weird accent. Not a centaur. Lame.
The editing is really choppy, by the way. It's weird. I think a good bit of this movie was left on the cutting room floor, which may explain the confusing bits.
Time skip! It's twenty years later, and Hercules is frolicking with his love interest, Hebe, who is a Cretan princess and not the goddess of youth. I understand going for his endgame romance, but personally I would have picked one of his mortal wives. Anyway, she's slightly spunky and rebellious, but not so much that she won't spend most of the movie as a damsel in distress.
There's a scene where Hercules and Iphicles run into the Nemean Lion; Hercules kills it, but lets Iphicles take the credit. The fight is short and the effects aren't great, but it's pretty cool. Enjoy it, because it's the only actual Labor of Hercules that's in this movie.
At the big palace feast, it's announced that Hebe is betrothed to Iphicles. She was not consulted about this, makes a scene, and she and Hercules run off to elope. Nobody seems to react to this until the next day, when they're suddenly being chased on horseback by guards. Again, the editing.
Having captured Hercules, Amphitryon drafts him to go with his army to put down a rebellion in Egypt. Because by the way, Amphityron conquered Egypt even before conquering Argos. This is so ahistorical and downright implausible that it gives me a headache. Later he mentions having mercenaries from Germania and the Horn of Africa, so yeah, he's clearly being written as a Roman emperor, not the king of a Greek city-state.
Long story short, this is all a scheme to get Hercules killed. Some Egyptians mercenaries ambush them and kill everyone except Hercules and his captain/new friend Sotiris. They claim that one of the random dead soldiers was "Prince Alcides," while "Hercules" and Sotiris are sold as gladiators. Back home, everyone thinks that they're dead.
Iphicles is a villain, but there are scenes that show how he's desperate for his dad's approval and tortured by the fact that both his mom and Hebe love Hercules more than him. Actually, his one scene with Alcmene is kind of harsh, since she basically blames him for Hercules' death.
Speaking of Alcmene, with Hercules supposedly dead, she takes the initiative and tries to kill Amphitryon herself! That's kinda cool, even if he winds up killing her instead. She also reveals that Hercules' father is Zeus, whom she claims will kill Amphitryon for killing his son. I think she's putting too much faith in Zeus' parental instincts.
It occurs to me that Alcmene and Iphicles are the only two characters with any real depth, and that I'd much rather this movie expand on that than Hercules and Amphitryon's generic plot.
Hercules' second act is pretty meh. He and Sotiris fight some guys in a dinky, underground gladiator fight. Then they convince their boss to take them to the world's biggest gladiator fight, which happens to be in Amphitryon's kingdom. But to qualify, they have to win this other gladiator fight first.
In this middle fight, one of their opponents is named Humbaba, because this movie wasn't satisfied with only mucking up one mythology.
The third gladiator fight is actually less impressive, because while it's Hercules vs. six of the best gladiators in the world, the Law of Conservation of Ninjitsu is in effect and he beats each one easily.
Also, there's a woman gladiator, presumably to make up for the fact that our other female characters are a sexy lamp and a dead mom. I note that while Hercules kills or maims all of the men, he just traps her in her own net, at which point she can do nothing but yell indignantly.
Hercules wins his and Sotiris' freedom! Then they start leading a rebellion against Amphitryon. Hebe tries to kill herself, but then learns that Hercules is alive and reunites with him.
Hera's priestess shows up for cryptic advice, the gist of which is that he has to have faith in Zeus and accept his destiny. She also implies that doing so will deprive him of his chance to be with Hebe.
Also, according to Wikipedia, this character's name is Kakia, which means "evil." In a parable by Xenophon, Hercules encounters Kakia, who offers him an easy but meaningless life, while Arete, "virtue," advises the opposite. So this Kakia is doing the exact opposite of what the Kakia in the story does. It's like if a Christian-themed movie had a wise priest named Satan.

so someone’s working on a translation for the Ahsoka novel on the local forum and I found that it’s rather quaint for us in the Cantonese context to translate.
In standard education, there is a clear distinction between spoken (Cantonese) and written (Chinese), but there’s no rule against transcribing what one says as well, just with less familiar, sometime archaic letters. (and I wouldn’t know how much is internalized as ‘less elegant’ but I digress)
how the translation was handled, was very obviously, Cantonese dialogue plus written Chinese descriptors. (there is movement to revitalise written Cantonese in recent years along with local sentiment.) Regardless, it was rather necessary for the description to remain written Chinese as it’d be quite confusing to read ‘they’ all over the page, since the Cantonese pronoun is not gendered.
My attempt translating a script of The Phantom Apprentice already proved a challenging task. Yet I think there is some sort of shortcut translating into Cantonese than Chinese.
Because as a tonal language, emotions are marked with individual interjection at the end of the sentence. So adding a simple character could sum up the emotion quite conveniently without sieving for the right collocation within the sentence.
Anyway, I just love how smart ass we’re making them talk.

about Ishigami, his growth and Miko's role
most people, myself included, thought at some point that Tsubame's rejection (or acceptance) could wrap up Ishigami's arc and even his past's flashbacks neatly, but Osaragi's arc suddenly revealing there was more to his relationship with Miko made me reflect more and think nah...if anything we're halfway there. It also showed glimpses of him already struggling to find his place in the world by quitting his clubs, even though he was successful at them and there was no Ootomo incident yet to undermine his self-image.
It seemed odd that despite everything he went through he still has his "hair=shield/averting eyes" theme going strong, but it makes sense if you consider even though Tsubame helped him see the way to be more accepting of people and cleared his name, his self-esteem still is super low. I spoke of this in my "sutera" meta, but to Ishigami, his life still has been a sucession of failures and almosts. At his core, he still hasn't fully opened up to people or learned to use his vulnerabilities to his advantage.

Tsubame is kind to anyone and attempted to do good for him, but ultimately he was never fully himself around her, nor she tried/he alllowed her reaching out to the deepest parts of his insecurities. She doesn't show her own flaws to him either and to this day we get the feeling we don't know her well, just the best parts that Ishigami wanted to see. Kaguya, Miyuki and Chika contribute a lot in a sibling-like way, but there's a limit to how much Kaguya in particular can inspire him. Miko however, has scratched a little beneath the surface and has expressed an interest in helping him with that, even if he himself is still avoiding the topic. She's also more relatable to him in the sense that the rest of the stuco has a history of successes in their lives, while he was able to watch Miko's hardships and failures closely. Their panic attacks even look similar and they're always watching the other to provide backup (in a very roundabout way, at least before) when they happen.
While their personalities are fundamentally different, his arc and struggles remind me a lot of Miyamura from Horimiya and today, as I was musing on what is so different about them as of now, I believe it's how Miyamura didn't have a single *traumatic* mistake to get over, so he goes down his development road much faster. Putting it another way, it's ultimately that Ishigami hasn't yet learned to be kind to himself like Miyamura has through Hori. Like Shirogane and Kaguya are through themselves. In Miyamura's case, sympathizing with how Hori despite her strong exterior can be very fragile inside but still support him (fight for him, defend him, accept his true self, not judge him, hear him, make him feel good enough) made him feel compelled to grow stronger to protect her back.
Miko as she was at the beggining of the story couldn't provide Ishigami this sort of stability (and that's where Osaragi's "prettier story"/"you weren't there for him" reasoning fails) even if deep down she wanted to, but now after making many mistakes, learning from them and becoming more flexible, she absolutely can. Both Ishigami and Miko have deeply rooted issues that took them more than just each other to flesh out and develop, but they're very much the missing puzzle piece the other needs.
Miko still very much has room for growth as well, mainly concerning finding a middle ground between her "bad girl" and "good girl" personas that Ishigami can easily see through, as demonstrated by the consolation chapter. She tried being "bad", she attempted lying but was still saying half-truths, because her love of justice isn't just out of parental abandonment issues or loneliness - she does believe them sincerely. The moment Ishigami headpated her and shared genuine, spot-on words of concern and admiration (thus a hint of fondness), it was all over for her trying to keep up the love-warfare upper hand.
That's not actually new - Ishigami has always demonstrated he was able to see glimpses of her true self, be it teasing how she's an otaku or a closet pervert and such, he never fully bought the strait-laced image she aspired to make real. But it did take him being around her more to see she could be sweet to him and as he puts it, that smiling more is not a bad look on her. Miko says to Osaragi your true self only comes through interacting with others, so given how lonely she has always been (and how the one person close to her - Osaragi - was actually keeping things between them superficial because of her own problems), it's no surprise she's only finding out now who she is. Ishigami can help Miko find a better compromise of good/bad after both not following any rules at all for so long and recently learning that hard work can pay off. Miko immersing herself in his hobby will clash with her rigid study schedule sooner or later, and he'll know how to help her with that better than anyone else.
On the other hand, Ishigami's moral compass, romanticism (love for flowers, planing dates etc) and idealism aren't things he is proud of...yet. He protects himself with layers of cynism, especially in his first appearances, but he is always being contradictory and letting it slip how idealistic/pure he is at heart. He also is only now learning to like his outward image with things like fitness/studying and finding out it's not like he never cared about it - it's just that he was scared shitless of failure, thus never even tried hard in the first place to avoid being hurt. And as I have advocated for in the Sutera post, I expect Miko in some level to help him come to terms with seeing good in himself. Heck, even being able to game with her now and showing off how good he is and having her appreciate it is gonna do wonders to make him feel more "adequate". Tsubame's arc had a lot of him changing himself to become "better", but Miko on the other hand is trying to put herself in HIS shoes to maybe go "hey, I like you as you are. I'm trying to understand you more and put effort in for you".
Ishigami and Miko start out watching out for each other behind their backs - which instead of helping their relationship, drives them further apart because they think the other side is showing no appreciation. As the story progresses, they're slowly learning to make each other more aware of their support, and it is making them open up more in general.
They have a strong belief the other wants to be rescued and there is truth in that. Both want help and to be recognized for their efforts, but won't cry out for it. In the unplugged earbuds chapter Ishigami takes it upon himself to protect Miko's reputation in spite of himself, the election arc has him actually putting effort into the campaign just for the sake of protecting her and at first posing as a rival of hers to Shirogane only to reveal he's trying to "make Miko smile", he is constantly fending off men from interacting with her as protection (while also sounding jealous), he was way more protective of her when she was wearing that cast than needed and is now being able to openly headpat her and sounds almost like her "soothing sounds" from the days of yore lol Sure Tsubame seems like his start to becoming "a better man", but all the way back on the election, it was for Miko's sake that we first SEE him putting effort into *anything* without being coerced by anyone to take action.
And while it's more discreet compared to Ishigami's "white knight" attitude, Miko also tries hard to protect him - cheering him on during the sports festival race and wanting to console him before the stuco intervened, telling him he should study (but he thinks it's just nagging), christmas (which I'll elaborate bellow), making sure he was able to graduate middle school by actually confronting school staff and, of course, their very first meeting as recently revealed.
Many people hated the entirety of Osaragi's arc, but 232 gave very juicy info indeed. Ishigami's reason for supporting Miko from the shadows comes from admiration AND part gratitude for her attempting to talk to him and listen to what troubles him, and seeing they actually had a "falling out" argument was game changing.
He looks sad and troubled to have shut her down there, not simply angry, and so does she (there's tears in her eyes when her face is shown in the next page) - despite her black and white sense of justice at this point of the story, she still wanted to listen to him. And even after that outburst she still believed the rumors weren't real, unlike Osaragi sees it - otherwise she wouldn't have made the effort for him to be able to move on to high school. Why would she care, if she truly hated him and thought he was in the wrong?
If any further proof was needed at all that this info is important, I'm happy to say we have more. I noticed the Christmas stairs scene mirrors this exact falling out moment: "Go away"/"Suit yourself"
But this time Miko had already decided to change, had already seen the mess their relationship became the last time she did not reach out to him and thus already had their previous falling out in mind - meaning she decides to chase after him.
I don't like how the scanlations handled this scene because reading the japanese raws, my interpretation was that Miko was sounding "annoying" because she was still kinda drunk/unfiltered and freaking out when talking to Ishigami, not outright berating him like the Jaimini's box translation made it look like. She also sounds too angry after the fall, so I generally thought Viz's version (the panel shown above) was closer to the original.
"I always have to take care of you! You keep putting youself in danger. You can't make it on your own." is a better translation than Jaimini's, and also parallels better what Ishigami is often telling Miko as well (That she keeps putting herself in danger and that he has to be around to keep her in check). But with 232 in mind, I think it misses a nuance of the original line: "ほんとあんたは 私が居ないと危なっかしく駄目ね" - "Honto anta wa watashi ga inaito abunakkashiku dame ne" - while I'm a novice at japanese studies, gathering from what I can read and trying to get a feel of the whole sentence, it's closer to "So it really is dangerous to you if I'm not there/ It's no good if I'm not around you". You can take that as her being full of herself, which is the route Jaimini's goes ("You'd be screwed without me") but that's too hostile - Viz's got the spirit of wanting to protect him better, but the original has an implication that she has "tested not being there"/failed being there before (due to not fully siding with him in middle school) that's absent elsewhere.
IMO the reason Ishigami's "closed his eyes" arc is not over yet is because he hasn't accepted or gotten over or fully learned from his past yet, he simply shut it down. That's why briefly during the sports festival his eyes are in plain view, then go back to their usual for the balloon gag. I'm not sure if Ootomo herself will make a comeback, may or may not - regrets are regrets and sometimes the only solution to them is letting them stay in the past. But the topic of how he saw Miko in middle school and the letter certainly are being set up to still show up in the story.
If I compare him to Miyamura again, he'd still be at the point before Miyamura's haircut - not wanting to face the parts of himself he doesn't like, not quite ready to change. Not quite ready to patch up his own wounds yet and instead silencing everything from his past.
In this sense, Miko does wonders to make him feel more confident even if he hasn't realized it yet, and she's always dropping little hints she'd like him to worry about his future not in a naggy way, but because she genuinely prays for his success. He unconsciously wants Miko to think well of him and it fills him with confidence and a more prideful image of himself he doesn't really display to anyone else, not even Tsubame - like his usages of "ore" (a more manly/confident way of addressing himself) around her (AND HER ALONE):
( I don't like the available translations to the staircase scene either, lol. Zaibatsu has conveyed the tone of the second scene up there perfectly. For the staircase line, I've seen "I'll be there to catch you" and "I'll save you" which are contextually correct, but to me the original "俺が絶対守る" - "I (ore) will absolutely protect you" carries a much more romantic nuance or ambiguity, regardless of him realizing it at that point. It's like, the title to one of the most romantic moments/songs in the CCS Clear card anime ost, for instance. OF COURSE MIKO LOVES HIM. The narrator doesn't overexplain or take apart Ishimiko's interactions like for Prezguya, but all the evidence needed is there. And I gotta add the very next chapter to the staircase one is the "eternal love" x "real love" I'm super fond of that says fate is irrelevant and to find real love you must use your head to realize/understand things, so makes the romantic subtext even greater.)
This whole affair is also making me open my eyes that I should try to study japanese more...of course I'm happy to have translations and scanlators working hard, but there is something inherently lost in adaptations because it robs you of connecting with the author's intentions unless it was the author who wrote the translation in the first place
Thinking back on Ishigami's early "i wanna die/i'm going home/don't look at me" role, it seems unbelievable we're at the point he's now able to directly confront a "stranger" (lololol) or make serious promises with so much confidence.
PLEASE DON'T END SO SOON MANGA, I NEED MORE.
( off-topic kind of, but i'm lazy to make a separate post just for it: Since I mentioned things lost in translation, I saw something on Discord about Ishigami having an unreliable narrator moment in the "compliments" chapter/Iino Miko cannot love part 4 and holy molly, it is true. He first says something akin to "You're just too beautiful" out of context, Miko HEARS IT - and that's why she looks so shocked before asking for clarification - and he DID SAY IT in the speech bubble, but after she's nice to him and he thinks back to what he said he adds a "Your handwriting is just too beautiful" to his flashback. I'm ONTO HIM. ONTO HIM I SAY. It is what he meant, but it's like his mouth betrayed him. Whether it's unconscious or denial...it totally is something. The scanlation completely skips this and had the same line both times it's mentioned.)

I thought I would have some fun! Since IkeGen’s 2nd anniversary is just around the corner, and mostly likely the next route would of Kagetoki. I was just scrolling through twitter to pass time,(because that’s my life now, since the lockdown started again!) I found something interesting!
Yeah! I missed it. So I decided to translate it now. So basically, this is the reward for making Kagetoki, the 9th best man in the Genjiden 1st anniversary election. Its called ‘Kagetoki Kagekini News.’ The newscaster, Kagetoki, will be reporting on the events of the Genji Den. So let’s start!!!!
Breaking News!! Suspect Yoshitsune and two others have been detained by a certain Karasu Tengu!
Kagetoki: “The suspects Minamoto no Yoshitsune, Nasu no Yoichi, and Musashibo Benkei have been taken into custody by a certain Karasu Tengu, the victim. The three are suspected of breaking the victim's incense burner and were planning to cover up the crime. Let us hope for a swift and severe punishment.”
Yoshitsune: "There is no room for apologies. I'm sorry, Kurama. I had no idea that an incense burner was so fragile. --Instead, let me prepare a new shiny object that you like. I don't know if I have the discernment to choose such a thing.”
Yoichi: "Hey, how come they even know that we were trying cover-up? Where did you see it? No, actually I feel bad too. I'm sure you'll be happy to know that I'm not the only one. ......But I underestimated Yoshitsune-sama's honesty.”

Sueharu: "Yes, yes, you're a product expert, aren't you? If you ask me, I'll prepare first-class products for you (at first-class prices, of course.) Oh, you're ordering everything from here to here? That's Yoshitsune-sama and Kurama! --Thank you again for everything.”

Kagetoki: "Suspects Minamoto no Yoritomo and Minamoto no Yoshitsune have been arrested. According to eyewitnesses, the two were staring at each other with their swords drawn when suddenly a vacant house in the vicinity exploded and scattered. They are suspected to be related. ...Is this a case of involvement due to an epic sibling quarrel?”
Yoshitsune: "I didn't expect to be arrested every day. But this time I plead not guilty. It is true that I myself and Yoritomo-sama were pointing swords at each other, but the explosion that followed is beyond my knowledge. ...And please don't call it a brotherly quarrel.”
Yoritomo: "You've got some nerve arresting me here. But I'm not guilty either. I ran into Yoshitsune, who was scouting in Kamakura, and I drew my sword. I saw a black shadow just before the house was blown up. I think we should investigate him first...... And don't call it a sibling rivalry.”
Shigehira: "--and why is Yoritomo-sama being arrested! I'm not sure what to make of this, but I'm sure it's something that's going to be a big deal for the Shogunate. ...... A mysterious black shadow, then. I'm sure you'll be happy to know that I'm not the only one who has a problem with this.”
Morinaga: "What is this feeling? When I heard that Yoritomo-sama was arrested for fighting with his brother, I naturally smiled. ...Oh, I'm sorry, can you please edit out that sentence? I think Yoritomo-sama is going to say something to me. And I understand about the investigation. Let's do our best, Shigehira.”

Kagetoki: "Continuing news. The real culprit in the bombing of the vacant house yesterday has been arrested. The suspect is Abe no Yasuchika, as most of us expected. He is suspected of releasing demons throughout Kamakura. The suspect made a joking statement, saying that he had no ill will toward the demons.”
Yasuchika: "Oh no, I really didn't mean to offend you. I was just going for a light walk and because the newly captured demon wanted to play outside. But when I saw Yoritomo-sama and Yoshitsune-sama having a sibling quarrel, I got scared and accidentally popped him!”
Ibuki: "You accidentally popped it. ...That looks like a pretty interesting toy. Hey Yasuchika, let me borrow that demon. You need a walk, don't you? I'll take you out somewhere more exciting and with a better view.”
Akihito: "Oh dear. I don't know what kind of "exciting" walk we'll have if Ibuki is in charge. Anyway, Kagetoki, what do you mean most of us were right? Yasuchika is such a good and honest boy. ...You think so too, don't you?”
Tamamo: "Kagetoki, you're completely right about this. If something happens, it's usually Yasuchika's or Ibuki's fault, let's just say that. ...Hmm? You think I'm going to cause a scene? I don't think so. Whenever I mess with you, it's always out of love, right?”

Kagetoki: "Is this the last news? Well, let's end with a spectacular revelation. In fact, Yoritomo-sama looks like a *beep*, Shigehira is a *beep*, and Morinaga is a *beep*, excuse me, there seems to be some kind of regulated sound. And then came the breaking news. The suspect, Kajiwara Kagetoki, has been arrested. ...Huh?”
Kagetoki: "It seems that I am suspected of leaking confidential information. It is a shame that I am a whistleblower for the Shogunate. I am indeed a member of the Shogunate, but in this moment, I am a man who lives to report the truth. Don't worry, I will keep my revelations to a level that will avoid social extermination.”
Shigehira: "Nothing is safe! Such an embarrassing secret of mine... I mean, why did Kagetoki-san know about that thing in the first place? I'm afraid of his normal information gathering ability. Up until now, I've been able to rely on him because he's on my side, but I can't believe how troublesome he'll be if someone gets in his way...”
Yoichi: "Wow, this is interesting. I'd like to say ......, but I'm wondering when the target will turn on us. I'm sorry for Shigehira, but I'll pray that he doesn't get caught up in this. I'm sure he'll be happy to hear that.”
Yoritomo: "I told you to go make one last splash, but here you are. Now you are angry that Morinaga touched the glasses you dropped this morning with his bare hands and put his fingerprints on them. I'll forgive you if you want to take revenge on Morinaga personally. The only thing I don't understand is why you revealed it to me first.”
Morinaga: "Isn't it because Yoritomo-sama blew it out loud when I picked up his glasses? But it seems that I was lucky enough to avoid being exposed. Oh, by the way, Kagetoki, here's an apology for you. Here are your new glasses!”
Kagetoki: "I will also request additional precious books from the Song Dynasty for Morinaga. ...Well, I guess it's time for me to finish. If my dog can wait properly, the news may come back to me again someday. You can wait until then, right? --I'll see you back here someday.”

It's an Honour to Eclipse | {New WIP} |

P.O.V: Third Person, Omniscient
Synopsis: Neveah after leaving university and moving into her first apartment is reinventing herself, discovering the city she lives in, finding the short-cuts, the cheapest restaurants, shaking her head. But when her estranged ex-boyfriend Oka disappears, no one seems invested in his disappearance, no one seems to be looking for the boy she stopped loving and yet his name keeps appearing, turning up in the margins of her life and Neveah is forced to confront the twisted history and secret life of the boy she intended to leave behind.

Frequently my subconscious approaches me with a set of storylines, a character name and a set of random scenes, It's An Honour To Eclipse was a small series of ideas that naturally grew the more I thought about them. I suppose this story came as the result of me moving into a boarding facility in the middle of the city and having to adapt to the fast-paced individualistic world of the great city. My own fear of the housing crisis and the crime rate of a busy city translated neatly into my main character whose whole life surrounds her trying to perfect some form of self-preservation.
The main drive of this story is her relationship or now lack thereof with Oka, a mysterious unfinished boy who drifts in and out of the story. I still don't know where this novella might leave, maybe Oka's captured by an underground secret society of 'face stealers' or people that replace talented local artists. I honestly have no clue but for now, I'm putting it under the vague category of 'mild mystery'. Often, when writing I don't have a firm understanding of my characters or of the ending that is about to surface I follow the flow of expectations and allow my characters personalities and ambitions to drive the story toward its conclusion. Right now Oka takes over the passages, slips into chapters not intended to be given to him, simply because he is a mystery to me and I want to figure out why this boy disappeared and the clues in his behaviour, in the known parts of him.

Neveah, the main character, Spanish and the first female in her family to graduate from university. She's stuck in a cramped apartment and her style consists of what she finds for free on the sidewalk and the brightest clothing at the second-hand opportunity shops. Committed the relationship sin of getting matching tattoos with a boyfriend she couldn't introduce to her parents, a tattoo of the window of their shared apartments in Neveah's there is a sunset in Oka's it's a night full of stars. Neveah is cautious and constantly conscious of how she can improve her situation and herself and tries to best facilitate her own growth.

Deals with her problems mainly by listening to audiobooks all night and visiting the aquarium to feed the manta rays and stare at fish for hours, at least their coping mechanisms that aren't too harmful.
Neveah has an obligatory shrine to Jesus with the little framed photo...well painting of the son of God sent to her by her parents.
Dangly earrings and platform sneakers are her ish.

Oka is a mess, a boy reliant on Neveah's help to get dressed, make the bed, do the groceries. He's tall with brown hair he dyes grey and when he first meets Neveah he's almost quit smoking but crashes back into his addiction when they start dating and every week picks up a bulk box of discontinued unfiltered cigarettes. His dealer likes Neveah and gives her chocolate as a part of the deal and Oka made his living by picking up odd artistic jobs, being a nude model every Thursday, volunteering at an art club and working as a waiter at a local bar. Absolutely hates his Art history degree and will fight their landlord if the rent rises.

Thinks he's super cool for owning a white zippo.
Unironically owns two cowboy hats.
Is actually a pretty good artist but rarely finishes a piece.
Likes ginger drinks and strawberry milk.
Is temporarily nocturnal.

I see this story changing and developing the more time I put into it but for now, it is made up of its central characters, the colours I associate with the grand city and the mysterious implications of finding someone yourself.
