On why Levi loves tea:

I’ve seen parts of this before but not all of its so,

The Underground is an incredibly dirty and inhospitable place with few resources including clean water. As the only water ever seen in the underground is literally shit brown.

Even assuming that it did just come from a sewage pipe if it’s leaking all over onto the ground and in exposed canals that are so dirty the water is nearly black,

its going to get into the water table no matter what

So not only are they living in a place filled with disease and probably terrible air quality, from exposed sewage, lack of ventilation, etc. they don’t really have fresh clean water to wash their bodies with or drink.

Therefore boiling would be the best option to kill all the germs and bacteria that would be found in even the cleanest water (because Levi would 100% trek miles for a bucket of the cleanest water the underground had to offer whenever possible)

After boiling they’d either have to wait until it cools or drink plain hot water that still tasted like essence of shit.

But a good strong black tea could do wonders to cover up the repulsive flavor, plus the caffeine helps him stay alert unlike alcoholic beverage alternatives. Coming from above ground his mom may have even introduced the concept to him.

Until he become successful with the ODM gear thefts tea would likely have also been expensive and difficult to obtain underground. Whether he used the ODM gear to steal the tea itself or money to order tea we’ll never know (personally I like to headcanon him stealing tea directly from the MPs)

But because of the scarcity of tea it was a luxury product for most of Levi’s life. So even when he made it above ground and joined the survey core drinking tea stuck with him as a habit as well as a luxury symbolizing the relative stability in his new life and all the above ground amenities he’d dreamed of for 20+ year. Sorta as a comforting “I made it” drink.

and let’s be honest growing up with those kinds of water problems he probably still doesn’t trust water and prefers it boiled and the flavor covered with black tea leaves.

cool summer's night promises the approach of fall, casting through the dim, dark-wooden bedroom a cloudless moonlight that bathes discarded clothes covering the floor in a white shine. cracked window yields the night air and an ever present voice or sound of a soul who cannot or will not sleep, the inner walls now perpetually droning with tens of its normal population. he doesn't mind it. levi would curse them. shoo them from this home.

erwin considers a horizon uninhibited by the great walls, winding hills and land as far as they could see from behind the pane of a window like he was now, staring off into the night. he wonders if ever there will be that future for them : a shared home, freedom. no walls, no underground. no drunkards fighting in the street in the middle of the night over a feud they'd already forgotten.

beside him, leaned against his ribs and chest rest levi, cradling erwin's hand in his, dark eyes closed as thumb traces against the inside of a half - closed fist. his counterpart fights exhaustion as muscle memory guides fingers in straight lines, the indentation of levi's sword now long since recovered and barely more than pale white lines framing his palm. erwin watches in shared silence as fingers slow, body stills, breath hitches, and thumb slowly stutters back to life, tracing once more across his scars. a soft smile rises to the corner of erwin's lips. would it be selfish to want it ? to think of a world they could live in where no one came banging on their door in the middle of the night ? where no one asked them to turn in their humanity and held a knife to their throats when they handed it over ?

he never entertained the ideas aloud. left levi guessing, often chastised by his other half, yet he would trust him nonetheless. levi was the only person who ever came close to understanding, aside from hange. the only one who could predict his thoughts and words before he said them; but not always his actions. not always his reasons. erwin didn't fear levi's response-- in fact, he near expected if he so much as suggested they find a home beyond the wall he would be wrestling levi to lay back down. that was why. this dark world had no room for impossible, selfish hopes built on the backs of sacrifice, a dream for one lifetime, short-lived and useless to the rest of humanity.

as levi once again loses the battle to sleep, erwin's position shifts, pushing down from the pillows to lay down on his side. hand outstretched, levi follows, back pressed to erwin's chest, fingers chasing the scars of his upturned hand as cheek buries against his arm. just like that. yet levi would insist how impossible it would be for him to sleep. fingers enclose on his other half's, now laced, abandoning fingertips against scars as consciousness lulls. selfish hopes could be built in the small moments they could afford, when time deigns them a night to be human. maybe he can tell him, someday.

One thing ACWNR anime did better than the manga is Erwin's "I need him" face when seeing Levi for the first time.

You mean this face? Honestly iconic. The fandom did a re-draw challenge of this cap sometime ago and it was glorious.

This precise scene doesn't appear in the manga (I think???) but this one does and it's equally magnificent.

hi this is the same anon about the acwnr ask! im glad i decided to resend the ask because i loved your insight and it made a lot of sense to me! so, thank you for answering <3 i also have another question, which i think you may have answered before in the past, but im not entirely sure so i apologize if you've answered this already. i saw a few asks you answered recently about erwin's role in acwnr and it really opened my eyes more to erwin as a character and his mindset. i also reread the manga recently and i remembered how differently erwin's speech at the end was handle in the anime and i wanted to know which you prefer/seems more like erwin. im not sure if isayama wrote acwnr or not so im not entirely sure which accurately depicts erwin during that moment.

The general consensus seems to be that Erwin's speech in the manga is the one that hues closest to Erwin's actual character. A lot of people criticize the OVA for making Erwin colder than he is in the manga, either the main one or the "No Regrets" one. Isayama didn't write "No Regrets", but I suspect he had input on the graphic novel, because Levi's characterization in particular is much better than it was in the visual novel that the manga was initially based on. Isayama also conducted an interview with the artist on the manga, which is included in the back of the collected edition of it. I really like the OVA, despite some people bad-mouthing it, lol. I thought it was really well done, and I really liked some of the additional scenes, like the one of Levi telling Furlan and Isabel that they aren't going on the first mission outside the walls and he grows visibly upset and frustrated when they fight him on it. That's very in character for Levi, to try and protect them as best he can. Most of the criticism seems to come from it's characterization of Erwin and from them having to cut several scenes due to probably time and budget constraints. Otherwise I think it's very well done, but Erwin definitely comes across much meaner and cold hearted in the OVA than he normally would. In certain scenes, he's downright dismissive toward Levi and seemingly not very sympathetic to his pain. I think in the manga, at the beginning, Erwin came across that way, but as the story progressed, he slowly became less cold toward Levi. So when discussing "No Regrets" in relation to actual canon, I always refer to the manga and nothing else.

hello, im not sure if you've been asked before, but what do you make of the canon relationship between Mike and Levi? It has been some time since I watched the anime and I never finished the manga, but I don't remember what their relationship was like in canon other than Mike fighting Levi in acwnr. As an eruri fic reader, I notice often that in fic Mike is antagonistic toward Levi, although sometimes they are friendly.

I can see the fun of writing antagonism there. The whole "Mike smashing Levi's face into the mud and forcing him to kneel on the ground before Erwin" is absolutely gold. And to be fair I'd expect Mike's relationship with Levi was initially rocky. There was surely some mistrust on both sides. Mike may have been Erwin's closest friend and if he was at all protective of Erwin, Levi's entry into their ranks must have been worrisome. Levi was Erwin's gamble, so I'd expect his sudden appearance into the survey corps was unsettling for many.

If Mike had initial issues with Levi, they seemed to be settled quickly. For both men, The Cause™ would have superseded any resentment or jealousy. Neither seemed to be the type to hold a grudge anyway. And I suspect Mike being the quiet type, he might have actually been relieved to lose the title of "Humanities Strongest" to Levi. So to answer your question, there's no canon indication of hostility, in fact they appeared to work well together.

Now I wanna know Levi's love life in the Underground, how it all started, the women he went out with and his first time-

Are you coming from Holy ground ch. 18? haha Levi's life in the underground is something that I adore to discuss about but I do understand that my point of view from it isn't particularly popular.

With that being said, I add this warning of "underage sex, underage alcohol or drug use, dubious consent and prostitution" ALSO, this is a hella long reply. Sorry

In Holy Ground, Levi mentions that he had 2 fuck buddies in the laps of more on less 4 years before joining the scouts as exclusive partners to keep the "clap" to a minimum (STIs). And, before that, he used to have more casual sex or random hookups. Apparently, from what is mentioned some of them was an MP girl around his age that offered for patrollings. Levi own words " I’m not apologising for shit that I did when I was eighteen, nineteen probably high, drunk, both or trying to space out from the shitty life I had to carry on."

I based this headcanons on personal experience I've either heard from my time helping adults from marginal environments that couldn't go to school as kids, their parents were either drug addicts, in jail and they were basically raised on the streets. You can be old enough to protect yourself but for the sake of surviving usually belonging to groups is the only way. With that being said and thinking that Kenny probably abandoned Levi at the age of 11-13. Levi probably formed part of other's thug's gangs until he was old enough to fully stand on his own. Those environments are never healthy and usually expose extremely toxic masculinity ideas, plus I do also think that Kenny fit or had those thoughts on his own. Therefore, I think that Levi probably lost his virginity at a really young age to prove he was "a man" and not "a boy". Probably with a prostitute. Somewhere the age of 15. This was an insane practice not until long ago, to take guys to "debut" as if this wasn't an abuse. Because men always want to have sex right? I'm being sarcastic here haha just in case.

I do not think Levi thinks deeply of this, he's the consequence of the society he was raised in (period of time etc). Therefore, when he started to slowly build his reputation as someone strong and powerful, he started to receive way more attention if you know what I mean haha. Teens are curious, even Levi and (as he mentioned) he was probably consuming either alcohol or drugs because 1) his environment would tell him it's the cool thing to do and you don't want to look like a "pussy" 2) probably under some circumstances it's cheaper than food 3) life down there must be a hell for a teen and needed to space out. So during this period, that would say between 18-20 years old Levi, I think that if a girl was interested in him and he was interested too, he was like "Why not? I may die tomorrow"

Then I think he had a severe mind change when he found Isabel (in the manga of ACWNR. Isabel is found by Levi as a little kid and practically raised by him). To this rate, Levi wasn't only powerful enough to be completely on his own, not depending on other gangs, but also taking care of a kid made him extremely responsible for the things he did and the people he surrounded himself with. Someone, Isabel, depended on him. He grew extremely picky and probably decided to get clean for real. "be the man he wished he had while growing up,". This is the time of his life that I call "fuck buddies", I think Levi was old enough to understand the consequences of keeping sexual relationships with people that may not be clean and also the willying to do more of his life than plain surviving. So this is when these two women come into the picture. Of one I've not imagined much and the other yes. Both women Levi trusted that wouldn't use him to get info or hurt Isabel and that he probably enjoyed the company enough to be like "We could fuck, no feelings, just two adults enjoying adulting,". The first one, I think her name was Emma and was at least 5 years older than him. She worked at a bar and started to do business with him and they got along really well. Until one day (as it said in Holy Ground) after almost 2 years of being sex partners she said "I'm getting married and moving up, so this is the end,". I think Levi was probably really shocked because he enjoyed her company very much and didn't even know she was getting to know someone "romantically,". Not gonna lie, even if he didn't love her, he felt a bit hurt of "Oh... ok," But we know Levi, he probably just accepted and moved on.

The second girl, I don't have much planned for her. Only that she was probably around Levi's age, maybe one or two years younger and part of his own gang. They lasted for a solid year and half, once again not real romantic feelings but "sexual interest and keeping it exclusive to avoid STIs,". He cut it without much information when he was finally sure they were going to move to the surface with the scouts. She "implied" that she had an idea of what was going on, that she wanted to go with him and that she "really liked him,". Something that not only shocked Levi but also he wasn't really happy with that. He wasn't romantically interested in that way and they did have this sort of "no feelings" thing so her impling that was like "so you had been in this shit all this time WAITING for me to catch feelings??? Oh no... what a fucking mess"

So, that's it! At least in Holy Ground, YN is Levi's first romantic interest... not the first girl tho haha. My only headcanon for the second girl (if you follow holy ground ) is that she ends up hearing about Levi dating OFFICIALLY a Sheena's wall rich girl and she gets offended because well it's like "oh so a posh surface girl is worthy of your love but not me?" haha
