I was obsessed with this song when it came out - in 2003. little did i realize how much worse it would get. i don't think i even had the ability as a freshly minted teenager to fathom a future worse than all of this. i don't think most of us did tbh. after all, we were promised the best and brightest and most fulfilling future of any generation. we lucky millennials. and yet 20 years later, here we are. living every dystopian nightmare we never thought possible as kids. in 20 years a song depicting what seemed like the worst outcome i could think of is now normal. idk maybe we should have seen all the blaring warning signs but for fucks sake most of them were buried in comedy, irony, sarcasm, fiction, or music that was mostly underground. no wonder we didn't think to take it seriously. anyway. have a listen. (and do keep in mind the language of the time) lyrics under the cut
Lyrics:
Your cellphone, your wallet, your time, your ideas. No bar-code, no party, no ID, no beers. Your bankcard, your license, your thoughts, your fears. No SIM card, no disco, no photo, not here. Your blood, your sweat, your passions, your regrets. Your profits, your time off, your fashions, your sex. Your pills, your grass, your tits, your ass. Your laughs, your balls, we want it all (we want your soul).
Your cash, your house, your phone, your life (we want your soul).
Tell us your habits, your fads, your fears. Give us your address, your shoe size, your years. Your digits, your plans, your number, your eyes. Your schedule, your desktop, your details, your life. Show us your children, your photos, your home. Here, take credit, take insurance, take a loan. Get a job, get a pension, get a haircut, get a suit. Play the lottery, play football, play the field, snort some toot.
We'll show you shrinks, we'll show you spooks, we'll buy you drinks, throw away your books. We'll sell you crap, we'll charge you tax, we're out buying big guns and you'll front the cash (we want your soul).
Your cash, your house, your phone, your life (we want your soul).
Your thoughts, your emotions, your love, your dreams. Your checkbook, your essence, your sweat, your screams. Your security, your sobriety, your innocence, your society. Your self, your place, your distance, your space.
[Bill Hicks] Go back to bed America, your government is in control again. Here. Watch this. Shut up. You are free to do as we tell you. You are free to do as we tell you.
Here's boy bands, here's Mackers, here's Britney, here's cola. Here's pizza, here's TV, here's some rock and some roller. Watch commercials, more commercials, watch Jerry, not Oprah. Buy a better life from the comfort of your sofa. Here's popcorn, here's magazines, here's milkshakes, here's blue jeans. Here's padded bras, here's armpit wax, here's football shirts, here's baseball caps. Here's live talk-shows, here's video games, here's cola-lite, here's ten more lanes. Here's filter-tips, here's collagen lips, here's all-night malls, here's plastic hips (we want your soul).
Your cash, your house, your phone, your life (we want your soul). [Bill Hicks] Go back to bed America, your government is in control again. Here. Here's American Gladiators. Watch this. Shut up. Go back to bed America, here's American Gladiators. Here's 56 channels of it. Watch these pituitary retards bang their fucking skulls together, and congratulate you on living in the land of freedom. Here you go America. You are free to do as we tell you. You are free to do as we tell you.
No hippies, no strays, no drop-outs, no gays. No lefties, no loonies, no opinions, no way. No thinkers, no teachers, no facts, no freaks. No skaters, no tweakers, no truth, no sleep.

Heebok Lee / Personal Project / Tread Softly / Film / 2005
Heebok Lee is a creative director who specializes in film and TV title sequences, this short film entitled "Tread Softly" was featured in IdN V12N4 in 2005 in a special feature on "Alternative Desire". The issue explored commercials, interactive gallery content along a recurring "pick of the month section" where Lee's personal project " Tread Softly" was included. IdN by this point had long abandoned the vectorheart style and blobby shapes that made up the visual design zeitgeist of a few years earlier opting for a edgier , illustrative, one may even call it gothic design language featuring assets like paint splatters and vector insects. A similar aesthetic change was also seen in Japanese fashion magazines at the time including the somewhat new periodical HUGE that maintained a focus on contemporary menswear fashion. The film itself is an adaption of a W.B. Keats passage and featured motion graphic typography alongside CGI superimposed with a real world model. Music is Idioteque(Adam Freeland Remix) by Radiohead(2003) originally appearing on Kid A(2000)

I've been heading in the wrong direction
Do you feel me getting further away
I've been drowning in my own reflection
Getting closer to the edge everyday
I was looking for a pistol
Looking for a pistol again
Coming up dead, only hope

TS2 Nightlife Soundtrack DJs
I think my favorite part of the Nightlife soundtrack isn’t just that they featured actual DJs doing techno remixes of Sims 2 music, but the specific genres the DJs worked in were never as popular as they were in the 2000s, so it really is a time capsule for the sound of that era.
Note: The “known for” sections are limited to work the DJs had released earlier than 2005 (aka prior to being involved in Nightlife) just to get a better idea of what EA saw in their work to invite them onto the soundtrack as well as compare their music as contemporary to what they created for the game.
Junkie XL: The Sims Theme
- Known for that remix of Elvis’s A Little Less Conversation that was used in a very early internet meme (among other things) and having a song featured in Need for Speed Underground
Adam Freeland: Arch of the Sims / Busy / Makeover
- Known for having a song featured in the rhythm game Rez and the single We Want Your Soul
General Midi: Shopping Spree / Stop and Sim / First Volley
- Known for his 2006 debut album Midi Style (not prior to Nightlife but I couldn’t find anything else notable about this DJ earlier than this lol)
DJ Hyper: Sim the Builder / Sim Time Sim Place
- Known for having a song featured in Need for Speed Most Wanted
Lemon Jelly: Sims Theme / Makeover / Arch of the Sims / Sim Time Sim Place
- Known for the singles Nice Weather for Ducks, Stay With You, and The Shouty Track
Timo Maas: The Sims Theme
- Known for his remix of Azzido Da Bass’s Dooms Night and having a song featured in FIFA 2003
--- Other Sims music trivia posts: ---------------------------
• Urbz composer interview & unreleased Urbz songs
• English to simlish Urbz songs
• Artists who did songs for both The Urbz & TS2 Console
• Hot Date songs licensed from APM Music
• English to simlish Unleashed songs

The man accused in a string of assaults culminating in a stabbing in downtown Vancouver on Wednesday was on probation for making threats against Canada’s deputy prime minister.
Kent Meades, 46, who is facing multiple charges including assault with a weapon in the stabbing, had been discharged from the Fraser Regional Correctional Centre just six days prior, Vancouver Police Chief Adam Palmer said Thursday.
Court records show that Meades had been sentenced to 148 days in jail and three years of probation in December, after being convicted of threatening to cause death or bodily harm to Liberal MP Chrystia Freeland in August. [...]

Various Artists / IdN Pro / Iconography 2: Life / Multimedia / 2004
A selection of the motion graphic works included on IdN Pro's Iconography 2: Life(2004). The second volume in their series on icons explores the work of over 90 designers and how Icons are formed, created and manifest stating "At its most fundamental, the icon is a summation - either of a simple message, such as "No Smoking", or of a whole movement, era, and attitude."
In addition to 300+ pages of visual inspiration from some of the most Iconic graphic designers of the 2000s such as Meomi, Neubau, Andy Walker for Nike, and Stapelberg&Fritz the 2 book set included a CD-ROM full of design assets so users could immediately start creating their own work. As usual a copy of the CD-ROM content can be found here.
Music is the appropriately named Music(Evilnine (Punk Rocks) Mix) by Ils(2002) from the single of the same name on Adam Freeland's Marine Parade label. Speaking of, there is an interesting parallel between this track and the content of Iconography 2.: Life. At the time creative fields all over the Western world were producing a massive amount of anti-American imperialism themed work, of which a considerable amount appears within this book. While this track has no overt political themes Adam Freeland memorably mixed it with Saul Williams' Non In Our Name (There's also a Cold Cut remix of this track) to open his May 2003 BBC One Essential Mix. A set that also included remixes of Rage Against the Machine and Radiohead and was broadcast mere weeks before Radiohead's polemic against the war on terror, 2003's Hail to the Thief.

Was kinda torn about this one; nearly went with Tyr's playlist because it's been a minute since I've listened to his, but I think I need to do some cleaning and tidying about it, some review, but I was thinking about my agents again because of agentposting in the swtor tag, so we'll go with Alucren's playlist!
