Adaro
Survived your encounter with the Abaia? Then perhaps you’re daring enough to continue your vacation, specifically on Makira Island in the Solomon Islands. There you will find the Adaro.
Now, I know I said I *wouldn’t* be covering spirits, but the Adaro fall into a bit of a gray area. They are merman-like spirits, malevolent and menacing. The word ‘Adaro’ comes from the Arosi language, and is actually paired with another word: Aunga. These words refer to the good and evil part of a human’s soul, being split upon their death. The Aunga dies or moves on, while the Adaro stays as a ghost.
The reason I’m including them is because of their physical manifestation. If you were to encounter an Adaro, you’d be met with an unusual “man”. He’d have gills behind his ears, a shark-like dorsel fin as a sort of horn, fins for feet, and swordfish or sawfish-like spear protruding from its head.
Another characteristic you should know is that they may travel in Jaratep or Daretep waterspouts, and along rainbows. They’re said to be dangerous beings, killing unwary fisherman by firing poisonous flying fish at them. However, sometimes, they might visit a man in his dreams, and teach him a song and dance.
They are said to have a chief named Ngorieru, a godlike Adaro who rides upon a massive seahorse. He’s the strongest Adaro to ever exist, fighting storms and releasing a rainbow when he wins. Feasts are held in his honor during the Season of the Hunt, occurring in the Spring. He also has a favorite food: foxes. They’ll often be sacrificed to him by the Adaro, who pray to him for help or support in “life”. Ngorieru is believed to live off the coast of San Christobal. If you happen to be on a boat in the area, use paddles and paddle softly, or else you may disturb him and incur his wrath.

Adaro
Tumblr media
"Goblin Shark ~ Day 10" © Candice Sciortino, accessed at deviantArt here
[This is another "If I Ran the Zoo" monster--the adaro appears in Pathfinder 1e's Bestiary 3. But it's kind of dull. There's nothing wrong with making a mershark, but the adaro has weird magical powers in the lore of the Solomon Islands that should get some due. This is an unusual folkloric monster in that I read about them first in a D&D book, namely the 3.0 3pp Penumbra Fantasy Bestiary. There, they were evil counterparts to tritons, which informed my take, but this isn't a straight up conversion.
Also, this art isn't explicitly an adaro, but I hear "horned shark", I think goblin shark]
Adaro CR 3 NE Medium outsider (native) This creature has a humanoid torso, but the tail and dorsal fins of a shark. Its hands are webbed with long, spindly fingers, and a long horn grows from its face above snaggletooth jaws. It carries a spear in its hands.
In the belief systems of some peoples, the soul isn’t a single entity, but instead is a composite entity. The higher and more civilized soul is what passes into the afterlife for judgement, but the lower animal soul remains behind and incarnates into a new form. The adaro is an example of these incarnations—the distillation of id and impulse, transformed into a shark-like aquatic form. Adaros are selfish and violent, and enjoy bloodshed and suffering for their own sake. One of the few arts they practice other than cruelty is music. Adaros are excellent singers, and may even teach these songs to mortals in order for them to spread farther. Otherwise, they are dangerous creatures best avoided or appeased rather than confronted.
Adaros travel in schools, working together to sink ships, steal catches and otherwise torment those that ply the waters. They can and do fight with their teeth and horns, but prefer to soften up enemies from a distance by magically conjured, venomous flying fish. After a barrage of these poisoned darts, the adaros leap to the fight, charging through the air and creating a rainbow in their wake. In waters where adaros are common, rainbows are seen as an ominous, not hopeful, sign.
Adaros are carnivorous and have long lifespans. They do age and die despite their relationship to soulstuff, and the quintessence remaining in them dissipates directly into the Astral Plane instead of going to an afterlife.

This fish is treated as a thrown weapon with a range increment of 60 feet, and ignores all miss chances as if it was a seeking weapon. If it strikes a target, the creature takes 1d6 piercing damage and is exposed to the following poison: flying fish toxin—injury; Fort DC 14; duration 1/round for 4 rounds; effect 1d3 Con damage; cure 1 save. Regardless of whether it hits or misses, the flying fish turns into a mundane animal after being thrown once. The save DC is Charisma based. Rainbow Leap (Su) As a full round action three times per day, an adaro can move up to 10 times its swim speed by leaping through the air. It must begin its movement in a body of water. An adaro can use this ability in conjunction with a charge attack. When it uses this ability, a rainbow is created that passes through the spaces the adaro moved through. This rainbow lasts for one minute, and any character that moves through any of these spaces must succeed a DC 14 Fortitude save or be dazzled as long as they remain in the rainbow, and for 1 round thereafter. The save DC is Charisma based.

Hexbreaker (Magus Archetype)
Tumblr media
(art by Scarday on DeviantArt)
The old magic can do a lot in terms of protection and healing, but it can also be very dangerous, capable of nasty curses and the like. It’s a volatile form of magic like that, and quite capable of falling victim to corruption, either from outside evil such as hags and fiends, or the wielder’s own vindictiveness.
And so, there are those that learn how to fight against these old ways. Stereotypically, these are often divine casters like inquisitors that seek to defeat these insidious foes, but that does come with some unfortunate baggage. (There’s a reason that inquisitors have been replaced by thaumaturges in 2E)
Some, however, find that the best way to combat dark magic is to learn similar mystic arts, alongside martial skill. In the past, we’ve looked at the Hexcrafter, which combines magus arts with the old ways to let a magus cast hexes. Today, however, we look at the Hexbreaker, a magus that learns counterhexes to dispel curses and even turn such foul arts back upon their caster.
They might be part of an old ways tradition to curb the most wicked among their number, or they might be newer, arising from other sources that simply seek to be rid of such malice. Either way, they demonstrate exceptional skill at countering the dark arts of spellcasters and other curse-bearing creatures.
Protecting themselves and others from curses means reacting quickly, and these mystic warriors learn an art of channeling their arcane reserved to disrupt a curse spell, malevolent hex, or similar ability as it is used, potentially negating it. It does not, however, have any effect on accursed auras that certain creatures have, however. Additionally, they can potentially learn spells to properly remove curses and break enchantments.
They can also expend even more arcana to turn the curse back on the caster, delivering an ironic punishment to them.
There are also two new arcana they can learn. The first lets them expend even more arcana to help guarantee their success in countering such cursed magic.
The second, however, causes dangerous feedback when they counteract or remove a curse, wracking the body and mind of the curse-layer.
A few ordinary arcana also suit them well, particularly those that are effective against other casters as well as blessing their weaponry against particular types of foes.
This archetype is specialized, but simple, offering a way to counter hags, witches, and other foes that specialize in curses and dark magic. As such, I would build to be an anti-caster that disrupts enemy magic regularly, using their anti-curse abilities as a nice bonus for the right situations.
Exactly what these warrior-mages experience with the old magics are will color exactly why they went into this art and how they view them. Perhaps they hate all practitioners of witchcraft, regardless of their intent, or maybe they have a deep, intimate understanding of the old ways that other witch-hunters might not?
Chasing the rumors of a curse-slinging witch, the inquisition sent some of their agents and a “heathen specialist” to hunt them. However, upon arriving they find the home demolished, apparently by a giant slug. The inquisitors are disappointed, but content to move on, but the specialist isn’t so sure the witch is dead… or that they are indeed a heretic at all.
Adaros have a long history of conflict with hags and sea witches seeking to use their people as tools of vengeance against surface people, so they have learned much about curse magic to turn aside their dark magic and destroy them, their greatest warriors often recognized as “Spellbiters”
Kovas of Longshadow is a mercenary witch hunter, wandering from place to place, keeping an ear to the ground for dark magics and abuses of lighter arcana. He always studies a job thoroughly to determine if the mage in question has truly done wrong and deserves his judgement. However, refusing work that doesn’t meet his standards tends to make enemies of those seeking the wrongful death of someone by claiming they are a dark practitioner.

Palacio Longoria (Madrid)
there are very few examples that can be framed within this style. In fact, the scarce samples we have of it, mostly obey the French and Belgian influences of the Art Nouveau, expressed with a different architectural language (with more naturalistic motifs), from the one employed by the Catalan Modernism artists, which impregnated their works with the feelings of the Renaixença.In any case, anyone knowing a little the trajectory of Antoni Gaudí, there wouldn't room for such a possible confusion, given that the lines and decoration of the Longoria Palace don't look at all like any of the gaudinian works. However, this singular building from Madrid was actually conceived by a Catalan artist, José Grases Riera, who developed his professional career in our city, and together with the architects Eduardo Adaro and Fernando Arbós, he played an important linking role between the XIXth and XXth centuries. Other buildings by him in Madrid are; the "La equitativa" building, in the Alcalá street, and the Monument to Alfonso XII, in the Retiro park.Once this point has been made clear, as there isn't in Madrid any building projected by Gaudí. I must add something more: there is a rumour, or the doubt (not yet being confirmed), that a family supposed to belong to the Catalan bourgeoisie, had to move to Madrid because of business affairs in the first half of the XXth century. They also brought a private chapel with them, supposedly designed by Gaudí, which was installed in their new residence. As this piece belonged to the private sphere, and given that there doesn't exist any document or photograph which attests so, this information remains a mere speculation, for it doesn't exist any checked data which proofs the existence of the aforesaid chapel, not even from the very family. Is this a legend or reality? We presently remain with the doubt, but who knows so whether eventually, looking up in an old archive, new data will be found to cast some more light on this matter.

The Adaro [Solomon island mythology]
According to the mythology of the Solomon islands in the Pacific Ocean, a person’s spirit is divided into two parts. There is the good part, the Aunga, which dies when the person dies, and then there is the Adaro, which stays behind after death to haunt the seas as a ghost.
These aquatic ghosts are usually described as humanlike, but with gills behind the ears, fins for feet and a horn that resembles the dorsal fin of a shark. On its forehead is another horn that resembles the tooth of a swordfish. It is said that Adaro kill fishermen by launching flying fish at their victims.

Drawlloween day 6: Adaro, the awesomely gay warrior mermen of the Solomon Islands. Believed to embody the wicked part of a dead man's spirit, they lived in the sun and traveled to and from earth via rainbows, sun beams, and water spouts. They used flying fish as poison darts (even though they have swordfish points for foreheads) and visit men in their dreams to teach them to sing and dance.

My origin headcanon for Tommy’s saber, Saba.
This will sound so ridiculous, but one of my favorite characters from MMPR was Saba, the beautiful living white tiger saber bestowed upon Tommy when he became the White Ranger.
Tumblr media
Saba and the TigerZord come from planet Saberius, a world that died a billion years ago after war tore it apart. Saberius was like Earth, save its sky was closer to purple than blue and it had rings that created rainbows overhead when the sun hit them just so.
Saberians were anthro white tigers and two factions were at war. The people who lived on the plains wanted the blood of the people who lived in caves, and vise versa. The war was so old that nobody young knew what it was about anymore, but it started over mining. Too much mining and the usage of nuclear weapons was killing the planet.
But there was an old wizard named Nikodai who still remembered when the world was peaceful. In his youth he was the original White Ranger who controlled the TigerZord, which he built himself and imbued with magic. He was one of the first to fight in the wars, yet as he fought he cried out for people to stop and talk it out, but nobody listened.
As the wars picked up he hid the Zord and white Power Coin away, fearing the power falling into the wrong hands if he was killed. He tried to preach messages of peace while using his magic to heal the sick and wounded, but his words were brushed off as nonsense.
Tumblr media
Nikodai could hear the cries of the planet. She begged him to stop the wars and he tried to do so peacefully. But nobody wanted to listen.
As time went on Nikodai made friends with a youth named Magaki. By then the wars were so violent that younger and younger people were being enlisted to fight. Magaki was one of the people who thought Nikodai spoke nonsense until one day a nuke hit way too close to Nikodai’s cavern home. He cursed at the plains people, and Nikodai told him to stop that, that they were all Saberians and this hatred was going to kill them all.
Then Nikodai caught wind of people digging around the Adaro mountains, which was where he hid the TigerZord. Fearing that it would fall into the hands of people hungry for power, he took Magaki on a quest with him to seek it out.
On the way, they ran into some plains people who tried to kill them on sight. Magaki knocked one out using the martial arts moves he knew, but he was shocked when Nikodai tornado kicked the other guy to knock him down. The still-conscious warrior moved to attack again. Nikodai stopped Magaki from killing the warrior and instead hypnotized him with magic to pick up his unconscious kinsman and go home. Magaki just stared at Nikodai in disbelief.
So Nikodai said, “That was mercy, something everyone has forgotten.”
It was getting late, so Magaki challenged Nikodai to race him. Nikodai looked decrepit at a glance, so the young lad was pretty surprised when Nikodai picked up the hem of his robes and outpaced him. The old wizard teased his younger friend about losing to an old man and they laughed as they ran.
The mountains held deep magical properties and Nikodai knew the planet would help him if he asked it of her. Magaki and Nikodai became closer friends during the journey. This is thanks in part to Nikodai letting Magaki hear the planet’s screams of agony and finally getting him to listen.
They got to the Adaro mountains only to find a nuke had destroyed the people trying to dig there. Assured that the Zord was safe, Nikodai took Magaki inside the mountain where the TigerZord appeared to scowl in its slumber.
Tumblr media
The planet granted Nikodai fresh ore from its core. Nikodai took the ore and secreted it away for the journey home. Magaki asked him what he planned to do with it, and Nikodai said he planned to make a weapon of peace.
Once home, Nikodai forged the ore into a beautiful saber and sculpted its face into a likeness of his own. He carved microscopic runes into the blade. The saber became the key to the TigerZord. But Nikodai feared what may happen if the saber fell into the wrong hands, so he hid it away and swore to only take it out as a last resort. He continued preaching messages of peace to both the plains people and the cave people.
A few started to lay down their weapons. Their superiors forced them to pick them back up. They were afraid to defy orders.
And the wars continued...
The years passed. Magaki grew into adulthood and introduced Nikodai to his girlfriend, Nara. Magaki joined the military and became a formidable fighter. He went from wearing a breechcloth and a tunic to Saberian armor, which was an opulent black and gold chest plate. Nara, who was a fantastic gymnast and who could fight like a storm if pressed, preferred to cook and look after Nikodai. She often wore pink tunic dresses with flowy skirts that allowed ease of movement. Nara worried often about Magaki’s physical safety. He was an accomplished martial artist, but cool kicks couldn’t stop a bullet, lasers or nukes.
Nikodai looked at this young lady who had just become a woman and realized too many children were growing up terrified. Then a nuke hit a few miles from his cavern home, shaking everything. Saberius shrieked in agony; the planet was irreparably damaged and doomed.
That was the last straw. Nikodai got pissed off. Nobody wanted to listen, so he was going to make sure Saberius’ legacy lived on. He busted out the wall where he hid the saber away, took it deep into a glowing room and opened his spell book.
Magaki walked in to Nara crying and found Nikodai chanting and dropping glittering powder over the silver, glistening weapon. A strong wind blasted into the room and lightning burst from Nikodai to strike the saber, turning it white.
The saber opened his eyes, gasped and cried out, “I’m...alive?”
And Saba was born.
Tumblr media
Saba could hear the cries of the planet because part of her Spirit has been transferred to him along with a piece of Nikodai’s. He darted around, terrified, shouting that the world was dying.
Magaki and Nara heard this and looked at Nikodai in disbelief. It was true. The planet’s core was collapsing, and already massive volcanic eruptions shook the opposite hemisphere. They were too late to save it, so their only choice was to relocate Nara and Magaki to the TigerZord and escape. Nikodai himself didn’t want to go. The planet was his first love and he couldn’t leave her alone to her pain.
The Saberians rushed to the cave entrance only to find their world unrecognizable. Ice crystals from the planet’s rings were crashing down, gouging out holes through which lava spewed up. Tornadoes were all over the horizon. Plants were dying and the oceans were evaporating. Think global warming on extreme fast forward.
A lava rock slammed into the cliffs behind them. Nikodai was buried under several boulders. Magaki and Nara frantically tried to dig him out. Saba, terrified, emitted light rays from his eyes that destroyed the boulders. Nikodai was crushed so much that some of his insides had been forced outside.
As Nikodai lay dying, he had a vision:
The TigerZord escaping into space with Saba safe inside.
Saba being discovered by a wizard carrying a spiral-tipped staff.
Five Coins flipping for the fate of the universe.
The TigerZord teleporting onto a blue planet with a single moon.
An alien warrior wearing a Saberian battle uniform with Saba at his side...
Tumblr media
Nikodai knew what came next. He begged Saba to call the TigerZord, but Saba was afraid he wouldn’t know how. Nikodai promised him that he could do it while Magaki and Nara wept over him.
So Saba took a deep breath, levitated himself upright and called the TigerZord for the first time. The Adaro mountains exploded with a boom heard around the world as the hyperactive Zord broke free. It leapt over lava pools, bounced off flying boulders and righted itself when it landed on its back.
Hope rose in Magaki when the TigerZord slid to a stop nearby. He leapt up and down cheering. Even in his grief he recognized the hope the TigerZord represented.
Nikodai lived long enough to see his TigerZord burst through the sulphuric brown smoke. He said goodbye and died of his wounds. Clouds covered the sun when his heart stopped. Magaki was distraught and Nara began to cry.
The continent began to sink into the lava. The TigerZord was in danger of being lost forever. Saba couldn’t take his eyes off his dead father. Nara screamed at Saba to get off the planet before everything was gone. Magaki joined in. Saba shed tears because he didn’t want to leave his friends, but a lurch from the dying planet prompted him into action.
Saba teleported into the TigerZord. Unfortunately, ash from distant volcanoes covered the sun along with the clouds, which cut the TigerZord’s power in half. He couldn’t take Nara and Magaki with him. They knew this was a possibility, so the two Saberians waved goodbye. Saba bellowed a tearful farewell and launched the TigerZord.
Up through the lightning torn skies. Up through the angry clouds. Up through the evaporating atmosphere. Up through the falling ice crystals. Up and up the White TigerZord went, rocketing away from the dying planet.
Magaki turned to Nara and cupped her face. He told her he loved her and swore they would all meet again somewhere, somehow. They kissed again as everything became fire and that was the last sensation they felt.
Saba watched his home world explode in a brilliant flash. He had become his world’s only legacy, so he closed his eyes and vowed to complete his mission.
With that, Saba and the TigerZord went dormant and drifted through interstellar space for millions of years until a planet registered.
The TigerZord landed in the open wilderness. This planet was peaceful and safe, so the Zord laid Saba between its front paws with the White Tiger Coin and went back to sleep.
Tumblr media
A man carrying a spiraling staff found the TigerZord in the wilderness. He approached it without fear because he was very familiar with Zords. He glanced down and noticed Saba lying between the White TigerZord's front paws. Lowering his staff, he reached down and picked the Saber up to examine it.
As soon as he was touched, Saba's eyes opened and flashed, startling his finder. "I am Saba of the planet Saberius, which is now gone. I seek peace."
The old man bowed his head; had been dreaming of the loss of Saberius and what came after, and now he felt that everything had come full circle. He told Saba that he had landed on Eltar and introduced himself as Zordon.
Saba sensed Zordon’s power. He was a wizard like Nikodai. He told his new friend all about how he came to be, the people he lost and the world he came from. Zordon listened with sympathy, something not enough people did on Saberius. He told Saba that he, too, was going to war with someone named Rita Repulsa.
Saba became Zordon’s companion in the war. Zordon wielded him like a champion and called upon the TigerZord on a few occasions.
When both sides reached a stalemate, Saba suggested something less violent. Zordon took that suggestion and challenged Rita to a special coin toss that would determine who would rule the universe. Saba helped Zordon infuse the Coins with magic to ensure the evil side wouldn't win.
Rita lost the coin toss as planned. In her rage, she cast a spell that trapped Zordon in another dimension beyond the flow of time. Zordon retorted by focusing his power and locking Rita and her goon-squad in an intergalactic dumpster. He sent her off into space, hoping that was the last of her.
Before he was completely trapped in his new prison, Zordon teleported Saba and the White TigerZord to Earth where they remained hidden for the next ten thousand years. Saba was patient and spent the time dreaming of his home. Hoping that maybe, by luck, he wouldn't be needed and he would be able to dream for the rest of eternity.
But the evil returned.
For a time, the help of the White TigerZord and Saba were not needed. Then one day, the war intensified. Saba was awakened by a telepathic call from Zordon.
And with Zordon’s pronouncement:
"Extend your hand, White Ranger, and accept all that has been granted to you."
Tumblr media
...a human hand held Saba for the first time. Tommy was unaware of the history behind his Ranger armor or the story of the beautiful saber entrusted to him, but he felt its life and magic course down his arm.
There was so much more Tommy didn’t know, but Saba realized something the second Tommy’s hand closed around his handle. He didn’t have time to ponder it, because Nimrod was becoming a threat and Rita was going to be another one.
Tommy went after Nimrod while the other Rangers dealt with the threat of Rita’s dumpster. (Lord Zedd hilariously had stuck her back in it...) Saba and Tommy worked together like wind and windmills. When it was time to call the TigerZord, Tommy’s reaction to it sealed what Saba knew.
Nimrod went down. The Rangers gathered afterward to debrief on what happened. They hadn’t morphed off their Ranger suits yet, so Saba listened to Tommy and Kimberly talk to each other. With their faces covered he focused on their voices and realized he heard those voices before.
The spirits of Nara and Magaki had reincarnated and found each other in the form of two human teenagers.
Tumblr media
Tommy asked Saba if his name meant anything. Saba said yes, it was Saberian for Peacemaker.
That night, as Tommy and Kimberly slept safe in their beds at home, Saba appeared in their dreams. He explained why he was there while his eyes reflected the story of his world.
A world with hardship and war.
A world where a doomed couple shared their last kiss as everything they knew crashed down around them.
A world where hope survived long after everyone had perished.
A world where an old wizard's dream of peace was still unfolding.
Tumblr media
...and somewhere in a place of both darkness and white light, Nikodai’s spirit looked up into the future and smiled.

Pharaonka
A type of Merpeople found around the coast of Russia, Pharaonki (plural) are sometimes considered to be cold-water sirens, and are known for their willingness to hunt, kill and eat humans. Muggle tales claim they originated as drowned Egyptian soldiers, magical tales claim instead that they were originally the result of several Rusalki travelling with Mediterranean Sirens which ended up forming bonds with Nile Mud-Mer, with Pharaonki as the descendants.
Pharaonka are curvier than Rusalki and even the Rusalka-River Mer Hybrids, with a comfortable layer of fat to keep them warm, even beyond the natural adaptations and native magics of all Merpeople that make them more resistant to temperature changes. Most live in groups and have regular interaction with both ocean-going Merpeople and inland Slavic Merpeople. In the past they used to sing boats over and sometimes kill the sailors and sink the ships, but with the presence of the Statute, and the protections placed on both magical and muggle boats by the ICW, this is mostly limited now to whomever they can lure close.
Generally considered malicious - much as Adaro and Qalupalik often are - they can, like both, be treated with fairly if one is careful, patient, and willing to learn their dialect of Mermish. Indeed, alliances struck with Pharaonka have helped several coastal wixen villages when Grindelwald sought to attack, singing phenomenal storms into being around the settlements and themselves, wrecking both Grindelwald’s boats, and disrupting the spells he was trying to cast.

"Adaro is a unique creature that lived in the Pacific Ocean. The Adaro is very dangerous. Said to arise from the wicked part of a person's spirit, which is divided between the Aunga (good) which dies, and the Adaro (evil) which stays as a ghost. An adaro is described as a man with gills behind his ears, tail fins for feet, a horn like a shark's dorsal fin, and a swordfish or sawfish-like spear growing out of his head. They may also travel in Jaratep or Daretep waterspouts and along rainbows and are said to kill unwary fishermen by firing flying fish at them."
