while i do agree with the sentiment that bloodclan should be more nuanced as an entity i still believe it is wrong to portray them as the necessary "response" to clan injustice (haven't read the books in years but i am pretty sure that bloodclan started with no connection to the clans) / an opposition to the clan's flaws. some of the thing scourge did was out of selfishness and bloodclan isn't the other colour of the black and white debacle with the clans. the clans are heavily flawed yes, but it isn't realistic to completely say that their structure had no redeeming qualities altogether and that all outsider groups is fundamentally better than the clans.

all clans and groups are flawed in their own way and i believe we shouldnt brush past the things that other groups (the sisters and what they do with their toms *cough cough*) did solely to be able to degrade the clans and their culture.

Buddy, you're setting up a strawman. I promise you that if you look into the reduxes I've made of BloodClan, Guardians, The Sisters, and the Tribe, you will see that I don't make any of them a "flawless" alternative to Clan life.

Nor do I say that the Clans have no redeeming qualities. In fact, you can browse the "Clan Culture" tag to see the various expansions I've made to show how these traditions, values, and technological advances make Clan life so alluring.

The overarching theme of BB is that the nature of culture is change. For better AND for worse.

With respect, I think there's something insidious in the wording of "the things the other groups did." We're talking about fan responses to a work that consistently demonizes and degrades foreigners to make the Clans look like the "best way to live," justifying xenophobia. These are not real groups, they are writing choices.

In the franchise with some pretty extreme examples of misogyny, the authors said "What if bizarro world where women rule and have no men... woag..." and only includes a single Clan-alligned member of this culture, with a BAD opinion of them, who can't even do his diplomatic job because he HATES them so much.

In the same franchise that shows Fireheart getting bullied, facing prejudice, and fighting a murderous tyrant who publically executes a mixed-race character, their endgame villain is an outsider, like him, but this one IS a godless heathen who HATES love and friendship and banned families.

In the VERY same franchise which made its first non-malicious group barely able to get through an arc without needing to be saved by Clan cats, totally unable to defend themselves, framed as "whiny" for not wanting their clearly 'inferior' culture to be forcefully changed.

And I'm re-stating all this because, again, no offense to you in particular Anon, but I've been seeing a few people with a sentiment like yours lately. Complaints into a vacuum that don't make targeted critique of anyone's fanworks, gesturing at this broad "woobification" which is apparently out there somewhere over the rainbow, saying things like "well Scourge is selfish" or "well Moonlight abandoned her 13 year old" as if we haven't BEEN knew.

As if we're not all directly responding to these choices. As if I haven't written ESSAYS on this topic.

Since this was about BloodClan in particular though, and you admit you haven't read the books in years, please go back and actually read Rise of Scourge before trying to make critique of the ways fanon rewrites its origin. It's EXPLICITLY a response to the Clans, in the text, that the Erins wrote, it is canon that fanon is working with.

And you want people to take that out and approach it a different way... why? Because it's so incredulous to you that a nation forms in response to a threatening neighbor? That a common enemy through invasions is a way that people might choose to unite, and encourage their new culture to value brutality? Because you don't like the idea of Clan Culture's XENOPHOBIC BATTLE CULTURE affecting surrounding communities??

Okay. Buckle in. I'm gonna finally actually address and explain and theorize about this whole...thing.

I'm not gonna cite any exact chapters cause it's like 11:30 and I've got an 8 hour drive in the morning but I'll at least make an approximate reference to where certain things are mentioned. Also, this post is just my personal interpretation for a good bit of it, but it's an interpretation I feel very solid about, so do with that what you will. Moving on to the meat of things:

There is one (1) instance in the web novel that I know of which describes specific features of Kim Dokja (especially ones other people notice). This takes place when members of KimCom are trying to make Kim Dokja presentable to give his speech at the Industrial Complex (after it's been plopped down on Earth). This is when they start really paying attention and focusing on Kim Dokja's appearance since they're putting makeup on him; I still don't think they can interpret his whole face, but they can accurately pick out and retain more features than usual. If I remember correctly they reference him having long eyelashes, smooth skin, and soft hair. These features can be viewed as (stereotypically) attractive.

Certain parts of the fandom have taken this scene and run with it at a very surface level, without realizing (or without acknowledging at the very least) that this scene is not about how Kim Dokja looks. This is, in part, due to not realizing or acknowledging why Kim Dokja's face is "censored" in the first place, and what that censoring actually means. I think it's also possible that some people are assuming the censorship works like a physical phenomena rather than an altered perception.

I'll address that last point first. The censorship of Kim Dokja's features is not something as simple as a physical phenomena. It's not a bar or scribble or mosaic over his face. If that were true it'd be very obvious to anyone looking at him that his face is hidden. But his face is not hidden to people. They can look at him and see a face. If they concentrate on his eyes, they can see where he's looking. They know when he's frowning or grinning. They see a face loud and clear. But what face are they seeing? Because it's not really his, whatever they're seeing.

No one quite agrees on what he really looks like. And if they try and think about what he looks like, they can't recall. Or if they do, it's vague, or different each time. We notice these little details throughout the series. Basically, Kim Dokja's face is cognitively obscured. Something - likely the Fourth Wall, though I can't recall if this is ever stated outright - is interfering with everyone's ability to perceive him properly. This culminated in him feeling off to others; and since they don't even realize this is happening, they surmise that he is "ugly."

Moving on to the other point about what the censorship means: To be blunt, the censorship of his face is an allegory for his disconnect from the "story" (aka: real life, and the real people at his side). The lifting - however slight - of this censorship represents him becoming more and more a part of the "story" (aka: less disconnected from the life he is living and the people at his side). The censorship's existence and lifting can represent other things - like dissociation or depersonalization or, if you want to get really meta, the fact that he is all of our faces at once - but that's how I'd sum up the main premise of it. (The Fourth Wall is a larger part of the dissociation allegory, but that's for another post).

So you see, them noticing his individual features isn't about the features. It's not about the features! It doesn't matter at all which features got listed. Because they could describe any features whatsoever and it would not change the entire point of the scene. Because the point isn't what he looks like. The point is that they can truly and clearly see these features. For the first time. They are seeing parts of him for the first time. Re-read that sentence multiple times, literally and metaphorically. What does it mean to see someone as they are?

This is an extremely significant turning point dressed up as a dress-up scene.

P.S. / Additionally, I'm of the opinion that Kim Dokja is not handsome, and he is not ugly. He is not pretty, and he is not ghastly. Not attractive, nor unattractive. Kim Dokja isn't any of these things. More importantly, Kim Dokja can't be any of these things. The entire point of Kim Dokja is that you cannot pick him out of a crowd; he is the crowd. He's a reader. He's the reader. Why does he need to be handsome? Why must he be pretty? Why is him being attractive necessary or relevant? He doesn't, he doesn't, it's not. He is someone deeply deeply loved and irreplaceable to those around him, and someone who cannot even begin to recognize or accept that unless it's through a love letter masquerading as a story he can read. He is the crowd, a reader, the reader. He's you, he's me. He's every single one of us.

i dont reblog those posts about how hard it is to have moralizing ocd in online spaces, even though i deeply resonate with them. ironically, i can only talk to 2 people about my ocd, because one of my obsessions is that other people will assume im using my mental health as a shield against criticism if i talk about it. therefore, if i talk about my ocd in any circumstance, my brain believes that i'm already doing something immoral

basically, most of my obsessions resolve around people assuming bad faith of me or that i'm somehow secretly an irredeemably bad person, no matter how hard i try to be good. i am a bad person if i dont reblog posts about serious topics, spend every waking moment thinking about extremely serious topics, or make any social mistakes whatsoever (which is scary because i'm also autistic). i believe that i am irredeemable if i make a small mistake, and i often think all my friends are waiting for me to make a mistake so that they can attack me, and that my life will be ruined if i fuck up. im constantly scanning all my interests (and people i know) for the tiniest imperfections (far beyond healthy amounts of criticism in your interests) out of fear that liking anything or anyone makes me a horrible person. if you dont take a side on this lgbt label discourse, then youre a bigot! im ALWAYS mentally preparing responses and apologies to totally theoretical situations of people being upset with me. i have intrusive thoughts about doing the immoral things that scare me most.

the problem is, *talking about* any of these thoughts invites people who will actually bad faith me. "if youre so worried about this stuff, then you must have something to hide! you just want to avoid accountability!" they make your obsession a reality by accusing you of the exact thing you fear most. none of these thoughts are reasonable or realistic, and i know that. i know that i'm mentally ill. i know logically that i'm as good a person as anyone else. when i actually do make a mistake, i stay level-headed and apologize, acknowledge what i did wrong, and change my behavior

but there is a large part of me that does not want to heal from my ocd, because i believe constant self-monitoring and self-critique is the only thing preventing me from becoming a horrible person

there is nothing i want more in this world than to be a good altruistic human being who is capable of growth, but spending weeks trapped in thought loops analyzing all my behaviors for the smallest signs of a mistake will not help me be a better person. it makes me a worse friend. it drains my energy so that i dont have the mental capacity to actually spend time being kind to others. i reread this post many times while writing it to make sure i didnt accidentally write 6 different slurs. but i can't figure out how to heal. what the fuck do i do about this

this is incredibly hard for me to write about. i'm fighting the urge to delete this post as you read it. i cant stress how debilitating this is for me, it is the biggest hurdle in my life and it sucks away days worth of my time and energy. i will become trapped in thought-loops THE SECOND im not kept sufficiently busy and stimulated by tv/music/my bf/being out of the house somewhere/etc. so much of my life is wasted wanting to be good, that i dont get a chance to actually live the life of a good person

hoshi: to me seems like the kind of guy who would be absolutely enraptured by an entirely introverted person. and i mean wrapped around their finger. he would think they’re so cute and would be the type to do anything possible to make them feel comfortable in any social situation. he would love being the sort of spokesperson of the couple and would take on that part so easily and naturally.

wonwoo: is VERY okay with an introverted partner. he wants you to hang out with his friends but is also so excited when you ask him to do something as little and intimate as sit together in silence. you would probably find solace in each other. he would be a good place to recharge your social battery at the end of a big event because he will be recharging his too.

dokyeom: would be so very likely to fall for an introvert. would find you so cute and would LOVE the little excuses to be by your side at all functions to guide you through the crowds of his friends and family or the excuses to leave early or stay home just the two of you. would be so understanding if you need your space, welcoming you back when you’re ready with open arms and a bright smile.

vernon: i feel like in a relationship, vernon is looking for the twin flame dynamic. which leads me to believe that he would fall for an introvert over an extrovert. he wants someone chill and calm who matches his (introverted) energy. would probably be the one to tell his partner to go home because he needs time to recharge lol so he would be so understanding of any of the introvert struggles.

seungkwan: is one of the more likely members to fall for an introvert. would want someone who simultaneously mellows him out and lets him shine when necessary, he would definitely be down to cuddle at the end of the day away from all the crowds, but he may get his feelings hurt if you decide you need time to recharge wholly alone. he doesn’t want to feel like you don’t like to be around him

joshua: even though he is such an extrovert, shua seems like the type to appreciate a nice day in or an intimate outing with minimal showiness. so i think an introverted partner would pair well with him. however, i don’t think he would actively seek out an introverted partner and may find their lack of social battery and shyness slightly hindering to his dreams for the relationship (traveling, going to concerts, doing lives together, etc.)

jeonghan: if you’re the type of introverted where you are good at interacting with people but only for short amounts of time, he’s so for it. he definitely looks for any excuse to get out of certain social activities so if you’re feeling overwhelmed? let’s go home. but if you’re shy and not good at talking to people or interacting in social situations, he may be a little wary of that. i can picture him being like “what’s so hard about talking to people?” and it could lead to some hurt feelings.

mingyu: is an enigma. he would love to have someone who can match his social energy at all times and all functions, but he also loves to care for people so i think he would love the job of doting on an introvert. i’m not sure an introvert would really initially grab his attention, though he might fall for one he gets to know well.

jun: is another enigma. i feel inclined to say he might prefer an extroverted partner. i think in a one-on-one setting he would love someone energetic and enthusiastic, traits that i see more often carried in extroverts. i see him as someone who loves busy and active days and calm nights, which might work better with an extroverted partner than an introvert.

jihoon: he is another one that would be okay either way. but i think he would be like seungcheol in the sense that he would love watching his partner take the lead and interact with his friends and family, which may not happen if he is with an introverted partner. a person who is good with people and outgoing would catch his attention.

seungcheol: coups seems like the type to enjoy sitting back and watching his partner take control of a room. he would love an extroverted partner who grabs everyone’s attention and lets him take the introverted seat. he would admire the extroverted partner and think “that’s my person”

chan: would probably not work well with an introverted partner. he may need your undivided attention at all times, so an introvert who needs time to themself might leave him feeling scorned. he wants to understand how you have to recharge and may need “me time,” but he doesn’t understand why being with him isn’t comforting enough.

obviously chandrilan fashion is influenced by traditional east asian garments (the first time i was watched andor i was thinking about how much it reminded me of korean hanbok but that bias is probably indicative of how i grew up near a koreatown) and i saw someone somewhere say that it's odd that the shirts are crossed right over left (the way to dress a dead person) instead of the traditional left over right

now this could be a cultural oversight on the part of the costume designers. it wouldn't be the first time hollywood (or even star wars) appropriated an aesthetic they didn't understand. but with the line "play it how you want. but i'm going to assume i'm already dead," also existing in this show, maybe it's not.

Ryuji definitely finds Conventionally Attractive Girls pretty, but he realizes around postgame that he genuinely formed crushes on THREE people; Akira, Makoto, and Goro. And all three of them are people who carry themselves as a bit Soft and Delicate (akira and makoto w their personality and mannerisms, goro w his appearance) while also being deceptively strong. Yusuke WOULD fit into this but hes only strong in the metaverse. Also if u tried to argue that he still finds yusuke pretty, Ryuji would just say ‘yeah duh? Of course???’ and would not elaborate further.

I just think. Its cute 👉🏾👈🏾 Ryuji loves someone whos pretty and capable of knocking him flat on his ass lmao He LOVES a challenge and he likes that they can all challenge him in different ways.

Akira is way stronger than he looks; hes very toned and he used to be quite active before being shipped off to tokyo. And after fighting in the metaverse, hes gotten way better at using an enemies mass and momentum against them. Yeah he can properly knock someone down, but its way easier to let Ryuji charge him and use that momentum to sweep and pin. Which Ryuji remembers vividly for Weeks. Akira is not allowed to spar w him and Makoto for awhile after that.

Makoto is just strong as hell. But shes very defensive, and extremely patient. ‘Ill wait and see before I decide What to do’. Shes got good reaction timing and its hard to catch her offguard. Its very difficult to disorient her so oftentimes, his spars w her are more about endurance. And if he ASKS her to do so, she’ll actually fight him back. He never wins 😭 but she is very patient w him and she doesnt treat him like an idiot. She likes to give him tips and redirect his strengths to make up for his weaknesses and it makes him a bit warm in this chest

Spars w Goro are just fun. Theyre fun! Goro is way more aggressive and reckless than Makoto and Akira. He is looking for openings near constantly and Ryuji has to either keep up or tank hits. Its very. Engaging. For him. Sometimes he loses and Goro is giving him a look so smug, Ryuji wishes he could kick him in his fucking teeth (something he clearly couldnt do bc hes already been knocked flat on his ass). And sometimes he wins, and hes so shocked and HAPPY about it; he doesnt miss the way Goro looks away from him pouting like a brat (‘no fucking way are u POUTING man, what a sore loser 😭’). Goro and his uptight personality is thrown out the window completely and its so fun and refreshing to see. Hes tall and imposing w broad shoulders and toned arms and if Ryuji is staring, he finds himself immediately distracted when Goros cheerful, softspoken voice asks if hes willing to go another round.

I love it 👉🏾👈🏾 Ryujis got a complicated relationship w violence but it helps to have people he trusts engage with it in a way that doesnt make him feel like some brute. Theyre all kind of itching to beat the shit out of things for multiple reasons, but instead of taking that out on each other, they spend time training one another so that they can beat the shit out of OTHER things better. Its an efficient system 😊

In reference to this post.

The main thing is what happened in 2021, when the Penumbra Podcast crew hired an artist to promote their new season, but the depictions of the characters were racist stereotypes. This is not the first time they hired this artist and not the first time the fans spoke up about how they felt hurt by it. Specifically poc fans. One of the creators of tpp even acted a bit irrationally and made a thread about the fans being unnecessarily upset, trying to shift blame onto the fandom. It brought more attention to the problem than was warranted. They haven't apologized about it (to my knowledge) but the thread has been deleted since then. This also happened around the time the BLM movement was gaining attention.

It took a while after, but the Penumbra crew eventually took down the depictions and posted an apology on their website. It's not anything special. "We heard you, we listened, it wasn't our intention-" yadda yadda yadda. BUT! They didn't do anything beyond that. They continue to not really showcase poc va's in their show (at least up to the point I stopped listening. don't know anything after like beginning of s3, and my research has come up short). Their reasoning being that race isn't seen negatively in the Juno-verse, but that's just the same as saying don't see color". I remember a lot of black fans got upset with all of this. Their argument was that Juno isn't a story about race. But you can't separate queer issues or classism or any of the other big themes in Juno Steel from racial issues in the real world. It felt like we were being neglected in this universe and the things many queer poc fans are actually facing were being avoided in fiction spaces yet again.

Where I was on social media, previous Penumbra fans told everyone to stop listening and boycott the show. I don't know if this was the right move in retrospect, especially since it didn't do anything. But I was younger and couldn't think for myself, so I followed the crowd. At this point in my own life l've left tpp behind for so long that I don't really care to start listening again anyways. Especially since there are so many podcasts out there that I enjoy more and actually do amplify poc voices.

NOTE: Everything I've said here is mainly from my loose recollection and a bit of fact checking here and there. To be honest I wasn't too invested in the issue when it was happening so I didn't pay too close attention. Take everything I've said here with a grain of salt, just in case. And do your own research on this if you want to know more. I'm sure there's stuff l've forgotten to say.

Is it me or do people really underestimate kamala’s intellegince.

I’d say the reason is that she’s nerdy or dorky or whatever but wouldn’t that would entail the opposite.

Like this girl has 4.0 gpa, she participates in science fairs, she got an internship at oscorp and apart from academic area she’s proven time and time again how strategic she is, the reason she’s the champions leader, or that she’s the mastermind and how she’s always the one when the plan, and she writes! like writers are one of the most intelligent people there is and I distinctly remember how more than one character praised her writing and storytelling. The girl that girl is genius! And I’m so tired of people overlooking that.
