There are 18 different species of penguin, but only two species truly make the Antarctic their home by living and breeding there- the Emperor penguin and these guys, the Adélies.

Male Adélies are nest builders, and their aim is to attract a female by building the biggest and best nest. To do this they use small rocks; if they think their nest is lacking in the shiniest of rocks, the cheeky little Adélie will steal from their neighbour’s nest.

“Adélie Penguin on an Iceberg”
Ice-dependent animals are in perilous danger of losing their habitats. This photo shows an Adélie penguin standing on an iceberg off Devil Island, Antarctica. I like how the half-lit, sea-eroded iceberg gives the scene a sense of dichotomy. Perhaps the penguin’s indecision on which way to go, or perhaps ours.

There is something so liberating about ripping paper. On top of that, creating something out of your tear-ings. And that we did! Natalie decided she wanted to do a penguin craft and that we did! We decided to learn about Erect Crested Penguins and Adelie Penguins prior to our paper ripping fest.

black, yellow, orange, white and pink construction paper

To do:

Have our child tear up yellow, black and white construction paper. While they do so, feel free to cut out 2 orange beaks in a triangle shape and 4 orange webbed feet. We cut out 2 white circles and drew a black dot for the eyes and cut out a custom bow for our Adelie! Start with the black paper and glue down the strips to somewhat form an oval for your penguin. The white can be glued in the belly area and the yellow for the Crested Penguin’s … well, crest! This was fun and a nice surprise when watching our little guys develop from pieces of ripped paper!

NOTE: Since Natalie is 3, I did draw a vague oval form to help her place the pieces.

Nature is amazing. Like, you have the good and the bad

and fucking Adelies

This large ass Petrol bullying some chicks into becoming its next dinner? Adelie fucking swoops in from the void and chases that bitch out

A large ass fucking penguin chick bullying an Adelie that’s half of its size? The same mother fucker slaps that bitch with the might of an assault rifle

Adelies are fucking magnificent. “Feistiest penguin in the world” damn right

Keep on going, little guy. You have the balls of a greek god ready to fertilize the next fucking tree it sees

I was sooo pleased with my efforts for this Mermay post - the background was a challenge (I based it off an extant photo, as included) and I’m happy with what I managed in a day. A big difference from the initial inking to the final digital render too..! I’m working towards cleaner linework, but it’s a work in progress.

Bird Fact! (Nr 5)

There are 18 different penguin species. All of them have dark backs and lighter tummies. Because when they’re swimming the mean animals that want to hurt them are also swimming. And if the mean ones see them from above they’re dark back will look like the dark ocean floor! And if the mean ones see them from underneath their light tummies will look like the clear sky!

That’s why they all have dark back and light tummies! To blend in!
