You start out thinking Shane is the zany cryptid and Ryan is the sane one. And then you learn more about Ryan.
And you realize they are the same level of insane in different directions.
So you think ah, it must be Steven then! He's the genius businessman who keeps the ghoul boys in line. He must be the sane one.
And then you learn more about Steven.

I've got another D&D poll for you all in a similar vein to Is the Advisor Evil? because I think it's funny and one of my players/mutuals suggested I do this, if only so she could make a propaganda post about my special little guy.
Here's the scenario: you, the DM, start a new campaign and want to get your party invested in the game quickly, so you create an NPC to lead the group to a nice little first combat scenario that your guy can aid them with before he gives a quest hook and dies dramatically.
Immediately you run into problems with this plan: the healer saves his life. The party adopts him. You think, okay, he can give them important information periodically and then you'll TOTALLY kill him off later.
Three actual IRL years later, you have tried (and failed) to kill him THRICE total and he is now a PC's love interest. So!!!!

Confession: I wish there were a Skyrim mod that makes it possible for whatever kids you don't adopt to get taken in by NPCs. I know there's mods that let you adopt more yourself but it's a bit immersion breaking imo. Like maybe if you don't adopt Sofie, if you win the war for either side you could convince the jarl of Windhelm to take her in or something. Or Adrianne and Ulfberth could adopt Lucia. It's probably just me but I feel bad that the player is the only chance for a good home for all those kids :(

Fic idea:
Former 90's rock star legend, Eddie Harrington, starts a podcast in the late 2010's with a weird choice of people (normal, not famous people, yikes!), but who apparently are close friends.
This podcast evolves quickly into a sprawling D&D campaign that gathers a cult-like following for a few years until one day it just explodes in popularity and becomes more mainstream. Eventually they move to streaming the campaigns live from their own homes/offices (simultaneously recording them for the podcast), and most people in the party have their own little fan clubs based on their characters and individual lore, compete with merch.
Eddie's always the DM, he enjoys it, and thrives on the chaos his team seems to try and generate to annoy him. The Party themselves (Dustin, Will, Lucas, Erica, Gareth, Mike and Jeff) have relatively normal jobs, so go absolutely feral during the podcasts, like they're reclaiming the insanity of their teen years.
It's just great fun, hardly anything like the dark, brutal campaigns Eddie used to run during Hellfire, and it's a great stress relief for them all. It eventually gets to the point where most people recognise or know Eddie from his D&D stuff, forgetting that he was 'originally' famous for half a dozen kickass rock albums.
(Sometimes Steve makes an accidental appearance by wandering into shot, or bringing Eddie coffee or snacks, and he ends up with his own wholesome little fan club because he's so normal in comparison to his hubby).

So I once made a funny shit post about the Young Wizard actually beaming to the Spiral at the tender age of 45 but it got me thinking of the opposite. What if the Wizard was incredibly young
Since in the game it isn't specified at what exact age we arrived in the Spiral I think it's just up to the player to come up with that part. I personally like to think The Wizard was around 7 or 8 when this happened but what if they were actually like four or five years old
Like shieeeet that's young enough where we wouldn't really remember our time on Earth very clearly right? Our family and maybe our friends but unless we had like ungodly memory powers, we wouldn't be able to remember all of the details of our original home. Like isn't it proven that human beings first gain self and special awareness at 3 or 4? Something like that
And this can open up for some sweet scenarios - little kid Wizard running up to Malorn with a scribbled drawing of him with a big smile on his face, or us and Ceren reading picture books together or clinging onto Nolan's robes as we attempt to stand on his feet as he walks like a penguin, but there's also this sad and messed up undertone that in this universe Ambrose took what was essentially a child just out of toddler stage and decided to keep them in the Spiral instead of returning them to their family
And like imagine how that would affect us. We would see it as normal at first because we grew up in the Spiral, we spent more years in the wizard world than in our home on Earth, but what if the Wizard gained awareness later on in life and actually realized what happened. Would they even care at that point because the Spiral was integrated in them at such a young age? Would they feel any yearning towards their original family, would they miss them at all? Would the Wizard be bitter about not getting to know them?
It's different when you're 7 - 10 and onwards because at that stage in your life you've more than gotten used to Earth life. You've gained awareness and it has been emotionally and mentally established that THIS (Earth) is your home. You know your parents and you know your friends and you know your environment. You will miss that when it's gone and feel it's absence because you're old enough to at least notice when you're taken away from it. But when you're still at that impressionable and oblivious stage of like 4 - 6 years old? The Spiral is all you know now. Your parents faces will be blurry, you may not even remember the details of what your home looked like. You may remember certain smells, colors or feelings you experienced when you were on Earth but that may be about it. And the saddest part about that is depending on what Ambrose and the other adults put our Wizard through, we may grow to completely forget even those essential memories. That Earth part of us would TOTALLY be gone and that would include even our parents (or other caretakers). I'm crying actually

"No matter what they might tell you, no one ever chose to die for a banner." I could have sworn I posted this here already, but I scrolled through my archive and it seems that if I did, Tumblr ate it. So here it is, from the end of last year: Ozanna Ascamore, upstanding hero of a troubled city, and one of the many adoptable NPCs in the collection I like to call Tome of Friends. They're all available for patrons, and each come with stat-blocks and abilities and personality descriptions, a token and some story-hooks to help you work them into your campaigns. Learn more about Ozanna here!

So my Sunday D&D group is great, but one of our quirks is that we get REALLY attached to NPCs.
Like the goblin rogue who got added to the party at the beginning to fill a niche, but has been unanimously declared the Main Character
Tumblr media
(this was when a fae stole his fashion sense)
Then a Mad Mage/God whose death caused IRL tears to be shed and who we used a serendipitous wish spell to resurrect (at level like 7-8) even though doing so could have helped the BBEG
Tumblr media
Last session we named the 10" tall humunculus that our wizard pulled from The Deck of Many Things and have decided to protect it with our lives (it has 1 hp)
Tumblr media
And finally, in today's session, we met an old man who sounds like an old timey prospector and will stare off into space thinking about fruit.
Tumblr media
Like I asked the veteran dm today if he's had any other group who has been so vehement about NPCs and he was NOT AT ALL
