A messy discussion of Glimmer (obviously includes spoilers)

I’m really on the fence about if I want Glimmer to have a redemption. I’m really enjoying this dark character of hers, and I feel guilty in saying I prefer watching Bow and Adora become closer as they begin to share the more morally good opinions whilst Glimmer becomes derailed as she is now seen to be envious and filled with more hate and spite.

Glimmer in my belief, has often been a good character but flawed - this doesn’t mean she’s bad or evil, just that she is well written and realistic. But one of her greatest flaws is her jealousy and selfishness - they mesh. These were never overdone but there have been scenes where they come into play earlier on in the show, and they were used to make her grow and flesh out her fears of losing her friends. This losing friends applies more to Bow than Adora - Bow and Glimmer were best friends, and her fear to lose him is very obvious. I’ll come back to this later...

In our latest season, Glimmer has to become queen of her kingdom. Glimmer is filled with grief at the loss of her mother, and Adora and Bow upset her by acting happy in order to avoid discussing her mother’s death. This is an understandable state of anger on Glimmer’s behalf, feeling as though her mother’s was not important. Unluckily, after this episode, Glimmer continues down a path of mixed anger and sadness - causing her to make very cruel actions.

As queen, Glimmer no longer can join her friends in their mission. Glimmer has one of the greatest fears of missing out, and as Bow and Adora grow closer this season, Glimmer is sidelined.

Double Trouble, a wonderfully chaotic character, uses this to their advantage - enhancing the fear of missing out into a jealousy of sorts/ anger towards Adora. Letting Glimmer believe that Adora is the route of her problems. This issue doesn’t entirely come from Glimmer. Adora too becomes angry.

But it is Glimmer that says the more harsher statements in later episodes, and cruelly starts to ignore the feelings of her friend.

Glimmer starts to create a closer relationship with Shadowweaver - a manipulative and abusive mentor/ parent figure to a handful of characters in the show. Heavily abusive to Catra, causing her to become the dark person she it. As well as manipulating Adora. It is obvious that Adora isn’t happy by Glimmer befriending someone who had hurt her and people she cared about so much. Adora isn’t ignorant to the abuse Catra faced from Shadow Weaver. Glimmer criticises Adora’s concern, mocking her for no longer being Shadow Weaver’s favourite - I would see this, alongside the comment of Adora causing Glimmer’s mother’s death, the moments that led to Glimmer allowing herself to succumb to being a much darker character than we had first suspected.

Glimmer abuses her power when she disagrees with Bow and Adora. Forcing them to be restricted by her orders, and when faced with their rebellion has chosen to take a much darker path. She believes she’s lost her friends, something she feared the most, but she blames them for it. And I can’t be surprised by this, when Glimmer first feared of losing Bow she expected an apology from him. This parallels her inability to take credit for her failure to be a good friend in this latest season. I fear how much clouded her vision can become if she chooses to have an alliance/ friendship with Catra in this latest season.

Again, at the end of this season, we see that Glimmer picked Shadow weaver over her friends. And I believe her failure to communicate and succumb to dark emotions will lead to an alliance with Catra as well as strain and stress her relationship with both Bow and Adora. Although if she befriends Catra, I am curious to see how Shadow Weaver will play into this...
