Binged season 3 of A discovery of witches. Here’s my review.

Great season, couldn’t just watch the first ep, had to watch it until the end.

Loved it but was super disappointed in the past two eps when it came to dealing with their enemies because they all were just neatly dealt with before our heroes had to fight them? Where was the battle of Bodleian? Where was Corra? Why was she reduced to only being shown as Gallowglass’ tattoo? Where was the other bright born witch? Was the older witch who fangirled over Diana and was practically ignored the whole time supposed to be her?

Also the actor who replaced Baldwin wasn’t a good actor and looked like a less appealing version of Micheál Martin? Like, I was never one to simp over the Taoiseach of Ireland but he’s practically a swoon-worthy in comparison to Baldwin who does look like a much, much blander version of him.

Also after having watched the Witcher season 2, I think the actor who played Lambert would’ve been a great Gallowglass.

Btw did anyone spot the nazi-looking vampire? Like wtf, you should’ve left that vibe in the 40s dude, when you were working with Gestapo, probably.

There were a lot of positives though and it was an immensely pleasurable cinematic experience and they did manage to tie in some loose ends from the books.

I also loved the actor who played Jack (Tony Regbo). He’s probably the only one other than Marcus and maybe Nathaniel who’s age appropriate for me.

And Miriam is as badass as ever. She was practically glowing whenever she came up. My queen. 🥺🥺😍

I particularly loved the subplots with Sarah and Fernando, and Agatha and the poor musician daemon. 😭 and the subplot with Marcus’ children.

I’m glad they didn’t show Phoebe’s dislike towards matthew or Sarah and Agatha’s budding relationship (does anyone remember if it was actually in the 4th book?) because the season was very fast paced and they didn’t have time to show newly developing or conflicting relationships. I feel like show Sarah was barely beginning to let go of Em at the end. Maybe if the do a movie or a spin-off on Time’s convert, I’d love to see these things happen.

I also really missed the science-y scenes and Matthew’s “and before you ask, I don’t sparkle” but this bite at Twilight might’ve seemed in bad taste. I missed seeing Rebecca and Philippe’s ghosts and Philippe’s gut-wrenching love for Ysabeau. I missed Diana learning more about her arcane powers. I really really missed Corra.

I also missed the emotional blows that were Ysabeau being present at Chelm and I mean the entire Benjamin arc was toned down so much, I get it that it would be less terrible like that but I feel like the scene where he threw Philippe’s photos at Ysabeau’s feet. I just really feel like the last part of the book was basically rushed.

I’d give it 7/10 stars but I’d give the entire series 10/10 stars because it’s one of the very few western tv shows that I consider a cinematic and storytelling wonder on the small screen.

(If you’re wondering, the other two are The White Queen and the early seasons of Outlander… and maybe even the first five episodes of season one of Poldark)
