I get that John worked on various Nickelodeon shows during the late 90’s/early 2000’s, so I don’t fault him for liking an art style that harkens back to that era of animation.
That being said, calling the art direction and character designs “gorgeous” is such a stretch.
Some of the establishing shots are decent, but outside of that, the show’s art style is a fucking mess.
Why are the Hellhounds furries? Why does every character have to have sharp edges? Why is everything red? And why are the majority of queer males skinny twinks?
Just because the show has some decent animation when compared to other adult animated sitcoms doesn’t mean we should pretend like the art direction and character designs aren’t frustrating.

I want to say that Velma is a symptom of the Rick-and-Mortification of adult animation. It's like how in the 90s every adult cartoon wanted to be the Simpsons, then for the longest time every adult cartoon wanted to be Family Guy, so now every adult cartoon wants to be Rick and Morty. They saw that Rick and Morty could be cruel and mean spirited, so they took that theme (and half the art style) and ran with it. I was never a big fan of Rick and Morty because it made me uncomfortable, but all my friends in college swore by it, calling it clever and satirical and unironically heartwarming when it needed to be (I don't personally see it, but surely they can't all be wrong), while all the new adult shows trying to copy it are just unpleasant and mean for the sake of being unpleasant and mean. Isn't it funny how all the characters are horrible human beings who never learn anything? Aren't optimism and sincerity stupid?

You know the really sad thing? A Velma/Daphne romance could have worked if a) These versions of the characters were actually likable and decent human beings, and b) They had atleast a season to develop and build up their relationship.
God I hate this fucking show.

A Mediocre Review of "The Second Best Hospital in The Galaxy"
Just watched the show, it's fun!
I don't watch loads of adult animation (like I watch some shows but don't make a point of keeping up with them), so I don't know how much it leans into the common tropes of the genre, but for some reason it felt like it might?
Not story or humor wise, both were solid and didn't overly rely on boring crass jokes (not that I have an issue with crass humor per se, but you can only watch/listen to so many jokes about shitting before you get sick of it as an entire thing).
There was a lot of gratuitous... gore? I guess. Like aliens being ripped in half and reassembled, and blood and brain explosions, and w/e. Though pretty much everyone survives w/e b/c medical humor.
And a lot of freaky alien sex. Which they leaned into in a "This alien extends tentacles into the eyes of that alien and rips em out as part of sex. In a fun way." A LOT.
Which would feel gratuitous if it wasn't so much: 'We are making these aliens "hot" (for a given value thereof) and the animators are going to have a contest to see how fucked up we can make their sex stuff.'
And seeing as we (almost) never actually see a couple that are the same species and def. never have sex snippets from the same species, the animators have a lot of fun.
My mild complaint is that they set up the finale plot fairly obviously in the premiere, and returned to that plot device for at least one minute each episode, despite a lack of relevance. Kind of just to remind the viewer that it was still there.
Which would have been fine if it was a 'weekly release' but since it was dropped all at once, it felt unecessary.
But yeah, characters are fairly compelling. There is a shocking amount of character development for what it is. (though it does have the perennial question in tv shows in general but comedy ones in particular: Will the development stick/ be noticeable in the next season? Usually not)
Story is fun, visuals, particularly visual gags, are great. I recommend it provided you are not overly squeamish.

Little Carol & The End of the World Talk /Review Musing.
Been watching Carol and the End of the world recently, and honestly I truly think its one of the bests adult mature animated series out there.
I love how natural sounding and realistic the dialogue is and how each and every single character feels like a actual real person or someone you could probably relate too and resonate with on some level or another. How each character be it Carol herself or Donna or Luis feels like people you either probably know or the type of people you would just see within everyday life on the sidewalk or at a store and as shown in the series at everyday work.
The emotions and heartfelt genuine human moments of this show is so good.
Another great example of adult Western animation being actually mature in its storytelling and being so much more then your typical animated sitcom.

I keep bringing up Beatrice from Bojack Horseman and how I wish Stella was more like her, but another example of a well written bad character who was expanded upon and written VERY interestingly, was Ton from the anime Aggretsuko. Ton was at first introduced as the rough, sexist and misogynistic cruel boss of an accounting department that Retsuko worked at, being a HUGE obstacle for her. He seemingly had no morals whatsoever, and she had to learn to stand up for herself and not take his crap, but what I love that the series did was humanize him more (WITHOUT RETCONNING HIM BTW) and showing his deeper outside perspectives. Like I said, at first he was very one note, mainly in season one, but as time went on, it was clear he had more layers to him. There were scenes where Retsuko herself had to learn that he wasn’t just black and white, and while his behavior obviously wasn’t excusable at all, the show did eventually show us through some good dialogue on why he acts the way he acts, and even show that his age and even sour viewpoint on todays generation could actually make him wise for the better, giving Retsuko herself genuinely good life advice that surprised her from time to time. It’s more of a moral way where you could UNDERSTAND where the character is coming from and why they’re like that, even if they don’t deserve sympathy, or aren’t excused for what they did. It even got to the point where I enjoyed watching him, and even felt freaking sympathy for him because I KNEW people like him. Not sexist, but…rough around the edges. A person who while heavily flawed, was still a person deep down. I personally think YouTuber “Hiding in Public”- described his character perfectly in his season 4 of Aggretsuko review:
With that said, Ton is honestly just another perfect example of a character that is bad, but written in an interesting way, regardless if you like him or not. Aggretsuko is one of my favorite adult animated shows, and while I definitely think it’s flawed in some areas, it’s overall a very good show with the perspective of adulthood and the struggles that come with it, I would definitely recommend it if you’re into anime.

Funny how the same HB/HH fans who have “Minors DNI” in their bios are now saying it’s okay for kids to watch Helluva Boss because a kid happens to be a big fan of Blizto.
Look, I can’t stop kids from watching Viv’s shows or any other adult shows, but I will give parents shit for allowing their children to be exposed to this type of content at a young age.
This isn’t The Simpsons or Bob’s Burgers, where there are a bunch of adult jokes but it’s super tame, Helluva Boss cannot go five seconds without making a sex joke.
And not the subtle kind of sex joke either, just full blown edgy sex jokes that would have a billion times worse if Viv didn’t have to worry about YouTube restrictions.
I’m not one of those “We need to ban this sick filth” types, I just don’t think parents should let their kids watch animated shows that are aimed at adults.
Family Guy, American Dad, Rick and Morty, South Park etc.
None of these shows are suitable for kids.
Parents who let their children get exposed to those types of shows at a young age should be held accountable, they shouldn’t be given a pass because quote “I watched South Park when I was nine years old and I turned out fine.”

Alright, this might just be my hottest take yet, but it's been on my mind so I'll say it, am I the only one on planet Earth who isn't in love with Unicorn Warriors Eternal? I don't know, something about the writing, the characters, and sometimes the voice acting honestly just isn't doing it for me? Especially after following up Primal, my favorite work of Genndy's and one of my most loved watches to date, it just feels so lackluster to me? I don't need my shows to be gore heavy or overly adult to enjoy them, but I feel like Unicorn Warriors is almost too watered down? Too tame? The animation is still beautiful, obviously, but that's honestly all I find myself enjoying about it? (Honestly I was pretty bored sometimes) I'd really like to hear what anyone else thinks because I feel like maybe I'm the only one or I need to rewatch it or something

Bags - Elsa X Honey
Lately I’ve been watching housebroken and I really love it! These two are in love for sure or maybe Elsa just has a one sided crush on Honey, I could definitely see that! It’s a breath of fresh air to see an adult animation cartoon that doesn’t center around a family.
I also have this uploaded on my YouTube channel if you’d prefer watching it there or if you simply want to support me!
