WK saying he doesn't remember Betty in the same way as Simon, yet the madness he projected onto PB made it so that she was bent on being together with him- another thing is that the feeling of badly wanting to marry someone isn't a trait of the crown itself, but rather bc of IK. It seems like he didn't want to deal with the feelings he had with Betty, so he thought that shoving it on someone else would be less of a hassle. Simon seemed to question that too, even though he didn't know of the projection at the time:

He had his own set of problems, though our IK never considered doing that kind of act in his days; it made me think that the Simon of the WK universe was probably just questionable in general and part of that personality carried over even after obtaining the crown, so I sort of wonder what he was like back when he was just a human. Though some behaviors can be hard to determine on if they were caused by the crown or bc of the original host's nature, seeing as WK was supposed to be a Simon but only with ice powers and without the "madness", he was possibly just more of a manipulative person compared to our Simon having genuine kindness.

Other bits of him include:

His sharp teeth only appearing when he yelled that CQ can't be helped (they were flat in every other instance)

Him having the ax bass (obtained at an older age than the fake ice Marcy) while the real Marcy isn't present for some reason

Him obviously lying about conquering the crown through "sheer force of will" (which probably made Simon feel inferior of his own abilities in that moment)

--all small pieces that showed off who he really is; he's likely carried an aura of 'looks can be deceiving' for a very long time

There's always a danger of caring too much about a story, and then getting paralyzed by the need to do it justice, so it never gets written.

I've solved this problem in the past by writing stories so fast that I don't have time to get too invested, or writing stories that I'm not that attached to.

But maybe the trick is to love the story so much that I want to share it any way I can, even if it's imperfect. To feel that any version of this story is better than the story never getting written at all. To get out of my own way and stop worrying about what other people will think of my writing, or even what I think of my writing, and love the story for its own sake, love the readers enough to want to have the joy of sharing the story with them.

Maybe it'll work. Maybe it won't. But so far it feels like a much better approach.

#adventures in writing #i think inklings has finally born fruit for me #other years i've stayed far away from beloved story concepts #for just this reason #and then i mentally shelved most of those story concepts #recognizing i'd likely never write them in a way that lives up to my imagination #and that probably gave me the distance i needed to pick some of them up again #for one thing the short time frame of inklings forces me to get down to the heart of the concept to fit it into a short story #and the long development time means i've had time to figure out what the core of the concept *is* #what keeps this story lingering in my imagination; which means i know what the good parts are #and then the deadline also forces me to try to write it fast and short #because if i don't write it for inklings i likely never will #and that's a tragedy i want to avoid #having such a clear concept of the story's core #means i can put up with ugly haphazard drafts #because i know what the overall story feels like; i've had years to develop it #so instead of a bad draft proving a story's not worth writing #i *know* that the story's worth writing because it's stuck with me this long #so the ugly drafts are just the building blocks necessary to create the final product #of course the danger is that i'll put out a story and it won't be as cool outside my head #and people will hate this piece of my soul i've poured out to them #but if i love it enough maybe it'll reach that special status #where it means so much to me personally that the wider audience reaction doesn't matter #but before i worry about this i gotta write a draft first

MAWS Beyond Theory

-As much as I want to see Batman introduced into MAWS, nobody’s saying it has to be Bruce under the cowl.

-What if there’s a brief time-travel shenanginans-esque episode where a hero from the future arrives?

-The hero: Terry McGinnis, the Batman of 2099!

-But why?

-The trio panic. They’ve heard rumors of how heartless Batman is so they assume the worst. Was he from an apocalyptic future where Clark turned evil? Was he here to off him before that future comes to be? Was this like the General hunting him down all over again?!?!

-But no.

-He’s here to help.

-Bonus: when Terry isn’t in the cowl on a mission, he’s a sassy little shit that revels in messing with all of them, have it be with future slang or offhandedly mentioning crazy events (look, the guy's arch-nemesis is a glow-in-the-dark skeleton & you wanna talk abt creatures in the sewer? He had to save his gf from a rat guy; he has lots of tea).

-The most heartwarming thing? He genuinely tells Clark that he looks up to him not bcz of the cape, but bcz of who he is under it. He sees Clark’s heart instead of Superman’s strength & makes sure he knows that.

-The mission (re: plot) is over & Terry leaves. Jimmy doesn’t stop using ‘schway’ for weeks.

-Fast-forward, Clark meets Terry’s predecessor & wow, he makes Terry look like a sunshine child in comparison.

.

-Double bonus: Terry returns to his time, in a Batcave where Bruce....and his other kids are. Showing us that in the future, Bruce retired but the family stayed together.

I like to imagine that Betty’s and Simon’s wedding was just around the corner when all hell broke lose. Maybe they were postponing it due to the mushroom war and said fuck it cause they were tired of waiting and if a bomb dropped on the chapel so be it.

I like to think it was barely a month away when he got the crown. That as a joke and a partial truth he said he’d wear it so Betty could really feel like a princess marrying her Prince on their big day. I like to think she smiled right before the crown took Simon over for the first time.

I like to think that’s why she didn’t fully run away. Cause they were so close to their special day and she hoped both literal and figurative storm would pass. That this would be a funny and crazy story to tell on their honey moon.

I like to think Betty heard wedding bells as she jumped through the portal and past their wedding date to a hopeful future with Simon.

I like to think Simon kept the bands, long after forgetting her and hid them when he realized the symbol of their unfulfilled promise wasn’t safe with his madness anymore.

I like to think some where they got to say “I do.”
