I saw this post about what would have the weird sister in Dracula be wearing and the OP wrote in tags that they would be lounging in Aesthetic tea gowns and I couldn't have agreed more, so obviously I needed to sketch them. Think of this as a part two for my sketches about some of the characters in 1897 clothing.

Please stop giving your leg amputees weird robot toes. I don't know why this is as much if a pet peeve to me as it is, but there's a reason why even the most advanced prosthetics irl don't have them and its not because the tech isnt there yet (kind of).
Making that many joints so close together is very difficult and will make the foot increadibly heavy for function that can mostly be replicated by a sheet of bendy carbon fibre (what irl prosthetic feet are usually made of). That many articulated joints are hard to control (even on hands, it's a challenge, and your hands dont have to weight bare), they will add a lot of weight, and will mean more power will be needed. Not to mention the joints would be points of weakness in an area that will be, at some stages in the walk cycle, bearing the majority of user's weight. Unless your character is going to be using their prosthetic feet as hands to grab things like that villain from Kim Possible, they are more trouble than they're worth, and your character doesn't need them.
Tumblr media
And look, if the reason you want to give them robot toes is because you have a thing for feet... why did you make them a foot amputee, of all disabilities lol? Odd choices aside, if that's the reason, just be honest about it, because why else is it always "sexy cyborg" type characters that have them?
Joking aside, the goal of a prosthetic is not (usually) to look as similar to "the real thing" as possible, it's to improve mobility. As such, sometimes the best solution will not be what looks the most "normal with a robot aesthetic twist". In the event looking like the real thing is the main goal, we already have the tech for that. Many prosthetics have silicone covers that look so realistic you wouldn't be able to tell unless you can see the top of the socket (where the artificial limb meets the real thing) and you don't have to give up much mobility or functionality to use them, since that carbon fibre sheet I mention just gets hidden inside the cover.
Signed an amputee who finds your pudgy little foot fingers unsettling and wishes people would stop giving robot ones to characters unnecessarily for the sake of making something that looks "normal".

Day Dress
c.1872
France
The 1870s was a period of marked romanticism and whimsy in fashionable dress. Much like the picturesque paintings of Renoir that depict such confectionary creations, both day and evening gowns were highly ornamented and often executed in delicate, feminine textiles. Though eveningwear was marked by décolleté necklines and lavish silk satins and taffetas, day dresses were made more modest with austere fabrics like cotton or wool. While many women owned walking and traveling dresses which afforded slightly greater moveability, also quite common was the summer day dress that was to be worn to an afternoon tea or reception. This garment, emblematic of warm weather day dresses of the period with its sheer printed cotton and delicate lace trim, is a particularly pristine example, and notable for its clear revival of eighteenth–century aesthetic sensibilites. The late nineteenth century, abetted by the luxury and progress of the Industrial Age, recalled distinctly, both in its textiles and in the etiquette that surrounded fashionable dress, the notorious material excesses of the third quarter of the eighteenth century. The wealthy classes of the late–nineteenth–century showed a particular respect for the formalities of fashion. While their garments were not nearly as ornamental and their entertaining circles not as elitist, the decorative effects of late nineteenth century afternoon reception dresses such as this one unarguably echoed the lavishness of the eighteenth–century gown, most notably here in the sleeve and neckline.

Treat #2 : The Reformer
This treat is a set inspired by the Dress reform movement (a bit of the Aesthetic movement too, lots of overlap between these two) from the 1895 to the late 1900s.
More pics and download below
It includes the following CC items :
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like the Aesthetic movement, the Reform dress movement dates back to the mid 1800's. It aimed at making women garments less constricting (for reasons varying from praticality, political leanings, supposed health downsides of corsets...). It was linked to feminism especially at the start and gave birth to the bloomers in 1851 for example.
Reform dress usually involved making it so that the main weight of the clothing would be carried by the shoulders and torso instead of solely the waist and thus get rid of the corset and masses of underskirts, to establish a "more practical type of dress that would facilitate a physical and productive life". This resulted most times in flowy dress, usually tea gowns. Like previously mentionned there's a big overlap between reform and aesthetic dresses since the medieval and antique (and even sometimes regency) influences fited the less structured reform dress silhouette of the late 1800's / early 1900's.
Once again this type of clothing wasn't well considered by the society at large, it took hold in specific artistic spheres such as the one surrounding the Wiener Werksträtte (a viennese artist association of which Emilie Flöge was a part of, the artwork is truly fascinating and very influencial look it up !).
This type of dress was so unconventional that apparently, the painter Henri de Toulouse Lautrec (who might I add painted prostitutes and such on the daily) was scandalised by Maria Sèthe Van de Velde's appearance when she welcomed him in a tea gown (see the blue tea gown below for reference) which he mistook for a dressing gown. I feel like this little anecdote helps to put things into perspective.

the gilded age costuming is interesting in that they deliberately take inspiration from later designs for bertha and gladys to emphasise the “nouveau riche” while the old money characters will be clothed in more historically accurate fashions (some are even direct replicas of paintings/extant garments)
I do understand the urge to do that, and I know it's approach with a lot of historical costuming, but personally I dislike that approach. I think it misunderstands the point of fashion in Victorian society. Today we think of the most fashionable people to be very forward thinking in their fashion and for formal clothing to be most fashionable. Red carpet is often treated as fashion event. However, this was not the case in Victorian society. Fashion was social decorum, it was a requirement to participate in high society. Or rather it was requirement to participate in society at all. Even workers adhered to the fashionable silhouette, while working. Here's for example factory workers from mid 1890s with perfectly fashionable silhouettes with the big sleeves and all.
Tumblr media
I think it's quite backwards to think nouveau rich would be experimenting with futuristic fashion. It's unthinkable they wouldn't adhere to the fashionable silhouette for high society events especially. They were the ones trying to establish themselves as part of high society, so they would be the ones most religiously following the fashionable silhouettes and styles. This is why tea gowns were much more experimental, and why the counter cultural Aesthetic style, which rejected the Victorian silhouette, could first entered high society through tea gowns. Tea gowns were worn in more intimate society gatherings (afternoon tea with neighbors and friends), so there was more room to experiment with new counter cultural styles. Tea gowns in 1880s had many of the elements that would become fashionable in 1890s, looser fit in bodice, natural form bustle and even balloon sleeves. Some British middle class/upper middle class women would dress in Aesthetic dress during 1880s in public society events, but they were not part of the upper echelon of high societies and no one dressed that way in high society evening events. The old money rich people also had more room to experiment with more unconventional fashion than nouveau rich, since their position in the exclusive high society was so much more secure, even if they were not as respectable (and adhering to the fashion ideals was about respectability) as expected of high society, their connections and status protected them from consequences. Money was not enough to secure your status, you needed connections.

What are some things that Wanda canonically likes?
For a long time, Wanda's main personal interest was she wanted to be an actress, and she had a passion for theatre, cinema, and things like opera or ballet. This also informed her aesthetic and fashion sense-- we know that she loves evening gowns, jewelry, long gloves, and on one occasion, her Lamborghini.
Nowadays, her fashion sense is still very girly and feminine, but a little more down to earth. You're usually going to see her in a skirt and high heels. Every now and then, she goes through a phase where she's always wearing headbands or headscarves, but not as a form of cultural dress, which is interesting. She's just a headband girl.
She loves tea, she likes chocolates, and her favorite cookies are ginger snaps. She's a vegetarian, but, paradoxically, her favorite dish is cholent. She's also lactose intolerant, so if I had to guess, I'd say she probably eats a lot of vegan food. Recently, she's stated that she's not a very good cook, but I'm not sure I believe that.
She likes reading. She likes collecting rare and old books. She genuinely loves learning and takes a lot of pride in her vocation as a witch, which is something that involves a lot of study and practice. I know I bring this up a lot, but she's a polyglot, and she clearly really likes learning languages and learning about different cultures.
Wanda really likes birds. I think they're her favorite type of animal, and she used to practice falconry. She seems to really like flowers, which feels like a basic thing to say, but there are a surprising number of panels of her holding flowers. Her favorite is the Wundagore everbloom.
Fun fact-- she's also really into robots.

Tea Gown, 1897
Description from website:
“A tea gown was worn when entertaining at home during the afternoon before dressing for dinner. This gown is made from copper-coloured silk satin, crêpe georgette and ivory chemical lace. The satin over-robe has a box-pleated back with a train and is embroidered with trailing flower stems and paste stones. A label on the inner waistband reads ‘Liberty and Co Ltd Artistic and Historic Costume Studio’. The Liberty of London department store, which is still trading, was founded in 1875. It was a beacon for the Arts and Crafts movement and its products were known for their excellent workmanship. Liberty opened a costume department in 1884 under the guidance of designer E.W. Godwin. Godwin favoured ‘Artistic’ and ‘Aesthetic’ style clothing. Garments were inspired by historic dress from the Classical, Medieval and Renaissance periods.”

This dress was worn by the donor's grandmother, Mrs Louisa Burrows, in the late 1800s.
Characteristic of women's fashion of this period was the tight-fitting boned bodice, aimed at creating the much desired hourglass shape. However some women rebelled against this tight, constricting style. Inspired by the Aesthetic movement in England, which encouraged good design, originality and self-expression, they began to wear easy-fitting dresses which revived past styles (Walkley 1985).
This dress borrows elements from Medieval 18th and 19th century fashion, with its loose front and girdle, and hanging sleeves. Such characteristics have been combined with elements of late 19th century fashion, including the bustle, bows and lace, however remains distinctly different to mainstream costumes of the period. The influence of Aesthetic dress is also evident in the dress's embellishment, which features a repetitive floral motif embroidered along the opening and shoulders of the gown. However the dresses bustle at the back may be seen as contradicting 'Aesthetic philosophy', and may suggest that the costume is a fashionable form of Aesthetic dress.
The Aesthetic style was embraced by a relatively small section of the community, and often extended beyond fashion to include visual arts, literature and fashionable living that rejected the contemporary dress and norms of Victorian industrial society and design, and focussed on the idea of beauty and all things 'artistic'. It was popular amongst artists, poets, writers and actors, most famously Oscar Wilde and William Morris. Although experiencing a surge in popularity in the 1870s, Aesthetic dress was nonetheless considered outside of the normal conventions of the time; its unstructured style, particularly for women, thought to be immodest and unfeminine. Aesthetics were commonly the subject of ridicule in cartoons and magazines such as the British satire magazine 'Punch', not only for their 'alternative' clothing, but for their perceived sentimentality, exhibitionism and exaggerated language.
Related to Aesthetic dress was the Rational Dress, or Dress Reform movement, that began in England in around the 1850s and continued throughout the 19th century. However unlike Aesthetic dress, which rebelled against the fashion norms of the period, this movement actively promoted a reformed dress style that combined comfort, health, convenience and beauty. In 1881 the Rational Dress Society was founded in London, and began publishing a Gazette that outlined the following philosophy: 'The Rational Dress Society protests against the introduction of any fashion in dress that either deforms the figure, impedes the movement of the body, or in any way tends to injure the health. It protests against the wearing of tightly-fitting corsets, of high-heeled or narrow-toed boots and shoes; of heavily-weighted skirts, as rendering healthy exercise almost impossible; and of all tie-down cloaks or other garments impeding the movements of the arms. It protests against crinolines or crinolettes of any kind as ugly and deforming reforms' (RDA 1978).
While initially Aesthetic dress was worn in limited artistic and dress reform circles, in the 1890s the style had been adapted for fashion and worn informally in the home as tea gowns and 'at home' dresses. As such it is difficult to ascertain whether the wearer, Mrs Louisa Burrows, was a firm follower of the Aesthetic movement. Also in the Museum's collection is a boned bodice worn by Mrs Burrows in around 1900. Nonetheless, this well-provenanced dress gives insight into the influence of Aesthetic dress on Australian fashion during the late 19th century.

Though angelic pop anomaly Aurora hails from Norway, it can feel like she was beamed here from another planet, an alternate universe, or at the very least, another time. A superstar with an otherworldly aesthetic, a special bond with nature and millions of followers on Instagram, Aurora is so enigmatic, decoding her is an almost impossible task. Still, we cannot help but try
Aurora is sitting in her bedroom, drinking a dark liquid from an elaborate chalice. “This is cola, by the way, not wine,” she clarifies, giggling. The Norwegian artist’s signature viking-meets-anime haircut frames her angelic face, which fills my screen. Behind her, beaded vintage purses and a dramatic silver gown cascade from the wall. Also in frame: a cabinet full of teas and spices and a picture of what appears to be Mary and baby Jesus.
Aurora is six minutes late, which she is profoundly apologetic for. She had been on top of a mountain in the rain and had to blow-dry her trademark cut before meeting with me. “It’s such lovely weather today. Really small raindrops from the sky,” she says. It’s fortuitous that she likes the rain; Aurora, born Aurora Aksnes, lives in Bergen, the rainiest place on Earth. It also happens to be the birthplace of the majority of Norway’s musical talent – DJ-producers Kygo and Alan Walker, electronic duo Röyksopp, even groundbreaking composer Edvard Grieg all hail from the city.
But Aurora’s story begins on the west coast of Norway, in a village next to the Lysefjord, also known as the Fjord of Light. “A lot of nature, a lot of forest, and little people,” she says. “So I grew up quite sheltered.” A self-described introvert, Aurora spent more time as a child within her own imagination than she ever did in school. She did, however, find a great companion in nature, spending hours walking in the forests close to her home. “Nature, she belongs to all of us. And she offers so much tranquillity and peace and silence,” she says, noting that these days we tend to get “very affected by so many worthless things”. “Nature offers some peace. It doesn’t matter who you are when you’re in the forest.”
After coming across her older sister Miranda’s piano in the attic at just six years old, Aurora started writing music . As she explains it, it was her calling because she felt that she’d never heard a perfect song. At nine, she started to write lyrics in English, and at sixteen, after a video of her singing went viral online, she quit school, and went on her first tour. At 20, she released her debut album All My Demons Greeting Me As A Friend, launching an international career. The record features the song “Runaway”, which, despite being six years old, has enjoyed a recent resurgence via TikTok. Today it has more than 500 million streams on Spotify.
This year, at 26, Aurora released her latest album, The Gods We Can Touch, to critical acclaim. While one would certainly identify Aurora as a pop star, she is hardly mainstream. Her music reflects her ethereal essence, somehow embodying the fjords and the mountains around which she grew up. Characterised by dreamy harmonies, her sound both transcends space and time and is rooted firmly in the modern internet pop landscape. Perhaps it ’s this dichotomy that allows her music to live both in the world of Disney’s Frozen II and in the popular video game Assassin’s Creed.
Though Aurora doesn’t recall much from her childhood, aside from “the things I was dreaming about and thinking about”, she does fondly remember her cat, Septimus. It’s the same name she’s given all of her pets – to her mind they’re all the same creature, reincarnated again and again. “To deal with pets dying, it was good for me. I was a sensitive little bean,” she says.
I reveal that I have a pet dog named Doggy, who is nearly 15 years old. As soon as I mention him, Aurora starts to cry, tapping into my impending heartbreak. These days she doesn’t have a pet herself – the lifestyle of an internationally touring pop star doesn’t suit animal companionship. She has, however, made a connection with a crow in the park next to her home. Aurora brings him shiny things, and he brings her gifts sometimes, too.
In addition to Septimus, Aurora also found companionship in her two older sisters, Viktoria and Miranda. She says they are among the few people who understand her, granting her the space and freedom to be herself. “I was very disconnected from people as a child,” she says. “I learned to love most people in my life when I grew up and understood what the essence of family is, and love, and coexisting. Because I was really overwhelmed by just learning to exist in myself as a human.”
Today, Aurora and her sisters are not only best friends, but close collaborators; Viktoria is a stylist and costume designer and Miranda is a hair and makeup artist. The sibling trio collaborated on our editorial. Later, I ask Viktoria over text message what it’s like to work with her superstar sister. “She knows when to leave it to me, and I know when to shut up and do what she wants even though it kills my pride or ego,” she says, adding that Aurora is a “very relaxed boss”. Even over text message, the sisterly bond is apparent – Viktoria signs off with a plant leaf emoji.
“I hate the fashion industry,” Aurora boldly declares when we start to discuss her eight-year long collaboration with Viktoria. “Fashion is important to me – it’s art, and it’s beautiful – but I hate the sad, hidden part of it. It’s so un-transparent and secretive.” Rather than wear items with a nebulous history, she prefers to ask Viktoria to make her clothes. Sometimes she explains her vision, sometimes they draw up designs together. “It’s very loose and free,” she says.
A conversation with Aurora can spontaneously divert to musings on space and time, philosophy, and the human condition. It strikes me that she could have become anything she wanted, but she says she quickly settled single-mindedly on music. “I understood the importance of music quite early, and I connected it in my mind with nature,” she says. “Music is a way to pool what nature is for our souls into something we can hold in our hands, and kind of shape it into something more comprehensible.” Aurora speaks of nature and music as if they are an extension of herself or a language that she speaks fluently. As the thoughts tumble out, the cogs in my mind shift as I try to keep up.
The music she was exposed to early – Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Enya – is a sanctuary for Aurora. These artists offer both a means to self-understanding and a portal for escape. “My brain has sometimes been a good thing and sometimes been a bad thing. It depends on what situation,” she says. “Since I became an artist, it’s always been my goal to offer the same kind of escape.”
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Aurora is not one to focus on the superficial or mundane. “It doesn’t matter if you get likes or if you’re one centimetre skinnier in your arms. Or if you have a pimple on your forehead. We know it doesn’t matter, but we still let it affect us so much,” she says (for the record, Aurora gets many likes – she has 2.3 million Instagram followers). Instead, she spends her free time studying big ideas: our perception of time, reincarnation and the meaning of life.
Aurora has a charming habit of pointing out concepts she doesn’t understand, as if she’s an alien observing human behaviour. Take, for instance, the way in which we tend to view our lives in a linear series of events - engagement, marriage, children. She chuckles and says that she doesn’t grasp any of it. “I always think of life as me being here, and then life just happens around me all the time and you’re in the middle of the now, which you always own. The now is always yours,” she says, gesturing her hands around her in a circular motion.
“Life is just all a round us, all the time. And we capture the right things sometimes, the right people and the right moments and opportunities.” She pauses to stare out her window towards the mountains, cloudy skies, and miniature raindrops she loves so much, adding, “Earth is my favourite place I’ve been in my life.”

For @valiantarcher: a vintage outfit for Bethira or Tietra
What I had on hand seemed more appropriate for a Bethira costume, so here it is! This is probably Bethira in the 1910s, after the (as currently planned) end of the series.
The dress reminded me of higher-waisted, narrow-skirted gowns from the 1910s, and the lace is in keeping the era's aesthetic. I like the blue-gray color for Bethira too. This would probably be worn to tea on a more informal occasion; it's fairly low-key by the standards of her wardrobe. I paired it with pearls (the double-strand necklace is actually from the early 1900s and belonged to my great-great grandmother), a fan, and vintage-style heels.
