Demeter Appreciation Post!

DEMETER! This is for the “jelliclequeens2020″ hashtag! Original post here. Let’s show some love and support for our girl!

June 11th: Demeter.

What do you love about this queen?: Basically everything if I’m being honest. She probably has the most backstory out of any character in the show, with her whole implied past relationship with Macavity. I like how you can pick up so much from how Demeter is played, there’s so much nuance and you get a good idea of how her past shaped her and how she’s moving on and getting better. Her personality stands out a lot among the tribe because she’s the only one who acts skittish and sort of scared, while everyone else is super confident. She sort of breaks out of this shell she’s built around herself during Macavity’s song, but she really, truly breaks out when she attacks Macavity while he’s disguised as Old Duet. That was her moment of courage and it had so much impact. Seeing her sympathetic looks towards Grizabella were also really powerful, you can see that she understands what it’s like to be in Griz’s position, what it feels like to be alone and helpless. Demeter is probably one of the most important characters in the show, her presence is vital to the story and the message of the show. She’s an amazing queen and definitely one of my faves!

What is your favorite version of this queen?: 1998, but I also really enjoyed the 2005 Moscow version and the 2016 revival version!

Who is your favorite actress that played this queen?: Aeva May from the 1998 film!

What is your wlw ship with this queen?: Demelurina and Demandra! Demelurina slightly more so because they have so much interaction, they’re literally inseparable for the whole show, but Demandra is a really close second for me! (You can see me ramble about it in my Cassandra appreciation post lol). I really love Demelurina for a lot of the same reasons as Demandra, I love how they look together aesthetically, (their color combo with the red and gold is gorgeous) but I also love their dynamic, which is, ngl, pretty similar to Demandra. The main difference being that Cass is this sort of serious, dignified, but very sweet, quiet queen, while Bomba is more loud, flirtatious, and a bit of a wild card. Both of their personalities balance out Demeter’s very nervous, flighty nature, Cass with a more calm, warm approach, and Bomba with a very passionate, romantic approach. But both of them are very caring and protective of Demeter, and they consider her needs above all else. As an aside, I don’t ship the three of them together because I prefer Cass and Bomba as a brotp, (but I don’t have anything against those who ship them, I do think it’s super cute! Cass/Bomba and Cass/Bomba/Dem just never clicked for me personally) however, I do love each of them individually with Demeter!

Your favorite moment of this queen in the musical?: When she sings her verse in “Grizabella the Glamour cat.” I always found that part to be really powerful, and I find myself singing that verse all the time, probably more than any other song in the musical. It’s such a big, grand moment for Demeter, where she recounts Griz’s past, possibly from seeing it herself, (I like to think that Dem lived on the streets before coming to the Jellicles and maybe saw Griz around town). I really love that particular moment, and I think it shows a lot of Demeter’s character and her sympathy towards Griz!
