Madagascar Tomato Frog
Tumblr media
AKA Dyscophus antongilii
Red as a tomato! These frogs are only found in northern Madagascar, and are closely related to the false tomato frogs from the same country (I wonder if they have a family rivalry).
The girls are redder and bigger, up to 4.13 inches, while the boys barely get half as big. They're from the Narrow-Mouthed frog family, which tend to be smaller, but these are a bit bigger.
They can live in forests, swamps, and ponds, but their habitats are being degraded and polluted, and some end up living in cities.
While frogs are mostly known for eating flies, these even ambush and eat beetles! That's a tomato for you.

why do culturally christian americans think it's okay to rewrite the mythology of cultures that have nothing to do with them to make them fit their ideals
#i see this done SO much to jewish culture both from actual practicing christians and pagans & atheists that were raised christian#like they seem to have that same belief of superiority over judaism and other religions more broadly#like folks appropriating lilith to girlbossify her#or rewriting every single greek myth again to girlbossify or generally give them modern politics & morals#for a while people were also doing it with like. old european fairy tales.#like remember that post that was like what if red riding hood was hijabi? like bro. have you considered maybe looking into actual#traditional muslim stories rather than slapping a muslim character over another culture and calling it a muslim story?#and there were various replies to that post. and these were clearly people with disney brainrot who wanted more diverse stories#but weren't willing to actually go look for them and would have rather slapped a different culture on a character who is still#fundamentally european. like. idk this is a whole thing.#like i kinda feel this way even towards disney's princess & the frog. there was an actual african version of that story. don't get me wrong#i liked it. and i don't have any say on whether or not it's good rep. because i'm not african american#like i like that it's an adaptation put into a different setting and different time period. but there was still already an african version#of the fairy tale. am i making sense#i don't even know if this has a name. idk if it can be classified as cultural appropriation. it's similar?#anyway. i hate this whole phenomenon.

I would like to offer this resource for therians, an extensive list of all of Sir David Attenborough’s nature documentaries that are available on soap2day, and a full list of what species* they each (notably, prominently) feature the natural behaviors of, separated by episode, and omitting species that were only shown dead, juvenile or being predated on. This took me a while (I have been working on it since Prehistoric Planet’s release) because I did in fact have to watch every single series in full in order to list all the species and the episodes are around 50 minutes long, but enjoy.
Long post ahead:
Most of these shows have closed captioning, which is why I’ve picked soap2day. Planet Earth is the only one that doesn’t. I did not include Dynasties and Dynasties II because each episode only features one species.
Thank you to Birch (@ambiguousmutt) for his help (he watched about half of the episodes) so I didn’t have to do it individually. Credit goes to him as well.
*Sometimes Attenborough doesn’t say the specific species and I was too busy trying to get through the episodes to identify it. In those cases I just put the most specific name I could.

of golden fools, a writeblr intro and the company they keep
hii, im mouse! im nineteen, african and queer as hell. i've been around writeblr many times, under many different names, but now i'm back, and would love to make some writer friends with stories to share!
i'm currently writing a gothic horror novel, titled run rabbit run, and the wip intro for that should be soon floating around on my page.
i love writing about grief, family that was once lost, and redemption arcs. nothing better than your problematic fave getting called out on their shit.
when im not writing, im usually still writing research papers for work (working with frogs atm!! picture above is mine) or for uni (animal behaviour/zoology students rise up!!)
my wips
run rabbit run; draft one gothic horror; wip intro
charlotte oberon has a penchant for lying, and getting herself into trouble. but for once, it's not her fault. her brother lies dead, and stretched thin from holding her family together, she is naturally relieved when oliver oberon comes back from the dead. but all is not as it seems. when strange things start happening, charlie must begin to face the truth, before she drowns in her own lies, alongside those she loves. set in an oppressive autumnal heat, in the hinterlands of queensland, australia, can a family crumbling from inside out ever heal from the grief haunting them?
when siren blood runs; draft two, on hiatus fantasy
tahjuddin youssef doesn't know how to face his family. 5 years ago he ran away, seeking fame and fortune on the red sea. well. he got one of them. luckily, his family welcomes him back with open arms, and as he relearns the motion of life off of the high seas, he begins to enjoy life again. less luckily however, is the fact that there is a bounty placed on his head. and the sirens are ready to have their pound of flesh. when tahjuddin is ordered to stand trial beneath the waves, and enemies are circling, waiting for the first sign of weakness, tahjuddin must learn who his real allies are, and in doing so, heal the wound in his family's heart.
please feel free to follow along if you like what im up to, and also to reblog, so that i check out your works too :)!

And for the grand finale of gifts from Chrismas comes from Al's partner, absolutely wicked specimens and something I don't often get to talk about.
Diaphonized specimens! These in particular are African Dwarf Frog and Angelfish. Both of which apparently died whilst being transported to different aquariums in the US.
For those that don't know what diaphonized specimens are, its a process of bone staining in which the skin is made transparent. Its a long chemical process but the results are stunning. A digestive enzyme called Trypsin is used to make the skin go clear, in this instance Alizarin was used to stain the bones red. From what I understand this comes from a plant called rose madder and the dye from this bonds permanently to calcium

traffic symbolism masterpost
i’ve had a little side project about giving everyone in the life series symbols. the rules are as follows: first place are celestial bodies (planets, moons, or occasionally constellations), second place are plants, and third place are rocks/minerals. last place are fungi, and everyone in between is an animal.
this post will have the full lists of all the symbols, but check out the original posts for the explanations.

So this is just what i thought on what language the twst characters homeland are, but correct me if i'm wrong, and i apologize that my english are not good since english is not my primary language 😅
Rose Kingdom/Queendom of Roses
Since the one that lives here are Riddle, Ace, Deuce and Trey. Riddle are based on The Queen of Hearts/The Red Queen Iracebeth, ADeuce and Trey are based on the Card Soldiers (The Ace, The Deuce and The Trey), they're from Alice in Wonderland That's theme from Mediaeval England/Britain so I assumed the language that they use are British English, Scottish and Ireland 🤔. Imagine Riddle with a Dub that sounds exactly like Ciel Dub from Black Butler/Kuroshitsuji 🤭
Afterglow Savanna/Sunset Savanna
The ones that live here are Farena, Leona, Cheka and Rook, Farena Based on Mufasa, Leona based on Scar/Taka, Cheka Based on Simba, they're from The Lion King that's have African/Savanna vibe, so I assumed the languange that they use are Swahili or any other African languange. While in the other hand there's Rook who based on The Hunter from Snow White, and as we all know that Rook use French most of the time, which make me thinking maybe some part of Afterglow/Sunset Savanna use French Instead, like Coast Ivory/Côte d'Ivoire.
Coral Sea
Those who lives here are Azul, Jade and Floyd, Azul based on Ursula/The Sea Witch, Jade based on Jetsam, and Floyd based on Flotsam, they're from The Little Mermaid. From what I heard The Little Mermaid are based from Danish Folklore(correcg me if i'm wrong), so I assumed they use the Scandinavian Languages (since i'm not too sure the Little mermaid are from danish folklore, i choose to guessed around the Scandinavian Countries) 😅
Land of Hot Sands/Scalding Sands
Those who lives here are Kalim and Jamil, Kalim are based on The Sultan and Aladdin(i think), and Jamil are based on Jafar from Aladdin which is themed Arabian, so I assumed they're using Arabic or maybe even Indian as their language 🤔
Land of Pyroxene/Shaftlands
Those who lives here are Vil, Cater, Jack, Trein and Vargas. Vil's based on the Evil Queen from Snow White that's from Germany, Trein's based from Lady Tremaine from Cinderella that's from France, Vargas based on Gaston from Beauty and the Beast that's also from France, I headcanon Jack based on The Big Bad Wolf from Little Red Riding Hood which said to be first started in frech, Cater're same as those four from Kingdom of Roses, So I assumed that the Land of Pyronexe/Shaftlands language are French/German, but from what I remember from Vil's backstory in the game Young Jack Said that "you must be new around here" (is that what young jack said?🤔, i don't remember really), so i assumed that Vil's not originally from Land of Pyroxene/Shaftlands. 😅🤷‍♀️
Isle of Lamentation/Island of Woe
The one that lives here are the Shroud Brothers, Idia and Ortho. idia are based on Hades from Hercules, so I assumed the Isle of Lamentation/Island of Woe use Greek as their Language. Not to mention the building on the location that show in Eps 6 looks like those builing in Hercules/Ancient Greece.
Valley of Thorns/Briad Valley
The one that lives here are Malleus, Lilia, Silver and Sebek, Malleus based on Maleficent, Lilia based on the Bats that show when Maleficent using her magic(?) Or he based on those fairy aunties (Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather(?)), Silver are based on Aurora or Prince Phillips, Sebek based on the Gargoyle/Ogre(?)/whatever creatures that guarding the castle Maleficent Resides, they're from Sleeping Beauty that's from France, so I assumed their language are French.
Port Jubiles/ Port'O Blisz
Sam lives here, Sam are based on Dr.Facilier from Princess and the Frog that's from the US, so I assumed Port'O Bliss have English language with different accents of maybe just New Orleans Accent(listen i don't know what kind of accents that the US have, so since i'm not from US i apologize) 🤧
Harvest Village
Epel lives here, Epel based on The Poison Apple from Snow White, so I assumed Harvest Village language are Germany.
Sage's Island
This is where NRC and RSA located, I guessed their language are Japanese.

...May I ask about your fursona ideas for the different beavis and butthead characters? 👀
HEHEH THANKS FOR AWAKENING MY MENTAL ILLNESS, ANON. I could talk about fursona headcanons (of anything) for HOURS.
I'll go through as many characters that I have ideas for. I definitely might miss some, but if you have a particular side-character I missed don't be afraid to ask. Again, I love thinking about this stuff : )
Beavis and Butt-Head: African wolf (Senegalese subspecies) and Spotted hyena, respectively. Hyena was too good an opportunity to pass up, but I felt Beavis needed to be a different animal. Hyenas are kind of "box-shaped" which lends itself well to how Butt-Head is designed, but Beavis is a lot more angular and "pointy" to me. I was considering a coyote, but it felt too basic. African wolf felt like a good median.

Also....consider...the size difference. Very silly. Buzzcut: American Staffordshire Terrier
Tumblr media
It just felt right. Cassandra: Okapi
Tumblr media
Just felt right (that might be my reasoning for a lot of these if they don't have extra commentary lol) Daria: Water opossum or Yapok
Tumblr media
Earl: Sumatran Rhino
Tumblr media
Principal McVicker: Gulf coast toad
Tumblr media
I did this based off of vibes/character design initially but, now that I am writing this, I am realizing there is a connection here between frog baseball and the mental abuse Beavis and Butt-Head put on that guy on a daily basis lmaooo. Stewart: Syrian hamster
Tumblr media
It is literally him. 'Nuff said. Todd: Red fox
Tumblr media
Basic "cool animal". Also I like the name pun (for those not in-the-know, Tod is a term for a male fox).
Tom Anderson: Texas pocket gopher
Tumblr media
Van Driessen: Water deer
Tumblr media
Gentle beast. Very befitting for him <3. I could also have him be a regular type of deer but I like the visual of their tusks. Hoping to make more art of these interpretations, so keep an eye out : )
