Saintpaulia (African violet)

Last week I went into a plant shop and, as I walked in the front door, I promised myself that I wouldn’t spend any money. They had a table set up with about forty African violets and as I walked by (lazily scanning the collection) I muttered, “Oh, I like that one.” - and the rest is history.

In my defense, this plant cost about the same as a Big Mac, and if well taken care of, an African violet will live for fifty years. However, that’s just an excuse. We all have our weaknesses and pretty flowers are one of mine. I’m sure that regular visitors to @flowerishness probably figured that out a long time ago.

yesterday was watering day so have a ✨violet update✨

the story so far: i repotted everyone except baby brain in january, and they all promptly grew a fluffy white fungus or mold in their soil, so we re-repotted them in february and things cleared up pretty quickly for brain, pinky, and baby elmyra, but little sister, elmyra prime, and little elmyra were still looking pretty sad. brain and pinky also got pretty extreme and uneven haircuts to groom away leaves that got wilty during the repotting dramas.

how it's going:

pinky and brain are still much diminished, but they and baby brain are thriving, with firm, perky leaves and new flowers growing.

i'm pretty confident in little elmyra's recovery at last! baby elmyra is doing great and winning the grow-new-leaves competition. little sister is still not at her best, but she hasn't given up yet, trying to grow some new leaves of her own. her outer leaves are still a bit floppy but the center ones are firm. fingers crossed, i guess.

babies and the propagation box are still growing well! that giant leaf in the corner of the box is from elmyra prime and hopefully it sprouts big and strong because...
