This #Shoe #sculpture is #Inspired by the extraordinarily #beautiful and #ancient flower, #ProteaRepens. It is found naturally in what is now called #SouthAfrica and #Kenya another members of the #Protea family can be found in what are now called, Guinea, Sudan, Mozambique, Angola, and Uganda.

Throughout history Protea has been used in numerous ways including for firewood, medicine, as a sugar syrup, a cut flower, etc.

YES! Someone from Europe believed they invented it and named it after some deity. The #apartheid group of colonizers call it suikerbossie in their language. I couldn't find the #original name given by the the #AfricanAncestors.

Saturday began the week-long celebration of Kwanzaa. Kwanzaa is celebrated over seven days to stress the importance of the Seven Principles. The Seven Principles Day 1: Umoja- Unity. Day 2: Kuji-chagulia- Self-determination. Day 3: Ujima- Collective work and responsibility. Day 4: Ujamaa- Cooperative economics. Day 5: Nia- Purpose. Day 6: Kuumba- Creativity. Day 7: Imani- Faith. Children receive hand made loving gifts, and one of the gifts “include a book and a heritage symbol,”. This helps the child gain knowledge and interest on where his people originated. Jan. 1st, at the conclusion of the holiday there is a “Day of Meditation”. The day is a time of reflection. Celebrants are instructed to reflect on their life and to reaffirm their commitment to the 7 principles. All kinds of ways to celebrate.
