Update on Oscar: Apologies for the delay; it’s been a busy week! Oscar continues to improve albeit VERY slowly in true tortoise fashion. He had a recheck of blood work and radiographs last Tuesday and while the blood work looked slightly improved, his constipation had worsened. He is still getting stool softeners and fluids but the dry, grassy content of his stool and residual inflammation from the bladder stone is making it difficult to pass on his own. We’ve been soaking him regularly and removing some of the grassy feces we can manually reach, but if he doesn’t start passing more on his own this week he’ll need to be sedated and scoped at the hospital to try and locate any other potential blockages. This procedure would be another $2000, 😳 so for the sake of our medical fund, we are rooting for Little O to 💩 on his own! Antibiotics and lots and lots of love continue. Thank you for supporting this perfect little dino. 🦕 #sulcata #sulcatatortoise #africanspurredtortoise #tortoisesofinstagram #vetmed #radiography #exoticvet (at Blackberry Creek Farm Animal Sanctuary) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cmoy1jYJdYi/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Update on Oscar: The doctor is happy with his small improvements each day lately! Thursday they put him on a little skateboard-type device to help take weight off his feet and get him moving around easier. He scooted all over the hospital and got some exercise! Yesterday he was able to defecate two very small amounts on his own… the first time he’s been able to get his GI tract moving without help. His hydration levels are getting better day after day. He’s still getting his fluid treatments, warm soaks, and esophageal tube feedings, and they will perform more blood work tomorrow to see if his uric acid and nitrogen levels are continuing to go down. If he continues to improve, he will get to come home soon! If you’d like to donate toward his $6500 vet bill, he would be eternally grateful!
