Oblivion
Tumblr media
It was a very well known fact that you and your sisters looked almost nothing like your big brother. You four were fully blood-related, yeah, but you guys couldn't have looked more different from one another. The only thing that was virtually the same, or that you guys had in common, was height. Your brother, Taishiro Toyomitsu, stood at a whopping 8'2. The twins, the second oldest two, stood at 6' exactly. And you, the youngest, stood at 6'2, just a bit taller than the twins. Why you guys were so tall, none of you knew, but it didn't bother you guys much, other than each time you may or may not have slammed your head into the doorways since not every place you've ever lived in had high door frames. But all that was just height. Appearance-wise, everyone thought, at first, you were all just really tall friends. Where he had blonde hair, you had a very pale pink color, the twins having pitch black. Where you had a very light purple undertone of skin, he was tan, and they had a light grey color. He had black eyes, you had periwinkle, and they had pretty brown eyes.
And you weren't really sure how quirks worked, that still being much of a mystery to everyone, but they were nowhere in the familial range for either of you. His quirk was Fat Absorption, you're sisters had geo-kinetic powers, and you had translucent shimmery wings and photo-kinesis.
He was a hero, Sami was a T.V. host, Dani a well-known chef, and you were dual-enrolled in college and high school. He found it a bit of a relief when the three of you told him you didn't want to be pro heroes. Since your parents' deaths, not too long ago, he'd been the one taking care of you guys. His hero job paid well enough, and with the part-time jobs there three of you had, you guys lived comfortably. Enough so that he was able to let you take a few semesters abroad. While the twins had taken vacations with their parents outside of Japan before, you'd never set foot away from it, always choosing to stay behind to keep Taishiro company. So it wasn't occasional that his fans saw him walking through the streets, patrolling, with what could have been an angelic being keeping pace beside him, both towering over the crowd. And maybe that’s where the misunderstanding took off.
You were only in town for the holiday. It was a week or so from Christmas, the girls were taking a spa day, shopping with friends that they've had since they were little. You were taking a stroll with your brother, who you found patrolling nearby where you were glancing at gifts for a friend.
“Hey, what do you think?” You asked curiously, showing him a tan jacket with a pale tan furry lining.
It was simple and warm, and surprisingly good quality for a non-brand name store.
“For you?” He asked curiously, watching you feel along the fur lining.
“No, for a friend.” You answered with a hum, making a mental note about alterations. “His jackets always get messed up, so I was planning on making something similar or just altering this one to be more...sturdy.”
“Oh? Is it a boyfriend?” He asked with a quirk of his eyebrow, a shit-eating grin taking over his visible face.
You snorted in reply. “Not even.”
"Good, your way too little for one," He grinned. "You're the baby of the house and you deserve the best!"
You went further back into the shop, shaking your head as your cheeks burned with slight embarrassment, looking for some boots for yourself, hoping maybe to find something for the girls too, as they were hiking fanatics and already needed a new pair of boots. You'd been just far enough to be out of earshot when he was somewhat startled by a loud-ish gasp, a few squeals of excitement and giggling, lots of giggling.
“Girl, hush! He’s probably busy right now!” Came a whispered shush.
“He’s probably patrolling, we could have just stopped at the Agency for one later!”
He looked down at the small gaggle, was that what it would be called? A gaggle? Whatever it was, in terms of correct naming, he found a small group of students from a school that wasn’t from her school, looking up at him, beaming.
“Dude, you look tiny compared to him.” One of the boys snickered, comparing the height of one friend to him.
Ah, so they were talking about him.
“Tai, you think Sami and Dani would like these?”
He turned to look at what you were showing him when another voice interrupted. “See! He’s busy Christmas shopping with his girlfriend!”
That caught you two off guard, confusing him as to where they got that assumption while you burst into a fit of deep-belly laughter, which was contagious enough to get him laughing.
“G-girlfriend?” You cackled, though it was probably closer to a chortle than that. “You think I’m his girlfriend!?”
They seemed confused. This was, to them, public knowledge.
“Y-yeah? The news reported on it a while back…”
That had your laughter dying down a bit. “What?”
“The news." One reiterated.
"They said you two were dating...there's merchandise for it too already."
As bad as that sounded, you couldn't help but burst into another fit of laughter, holding your belly as the things she planned to buy levitated above you.
"Oh, Jesus...that's hilarious!"
"Completely wrong and hilarious." He said shaking his head, wondering who he'd have to call to get that recanted.
"So you two aren't…"
"No, gods no, I'm his sister," You chuckled softly. "It's confusing cause we don't really look like siblings, but I swear, I'm his sister."
"But the clip of you kissing him?"
"He kissed my forehead, I was leaving for Sydney to study abroad." You explained.
"Oh no…"
You looked up at your brother, confused at his deadpan expression.
"The fan mail…" At that, you fell silent, realization dawning on you.
You grimaced at that. "I'm over it." You said, shaking your head. "I'm gonna go pay for the stuff...it was nice to meet you, kids, thanks for the laugh."
By the time you got back, and your things were neatly wrapped in boxes, thanks to the nice old lady that ran the store, you found him standing at the entrance still, sighing heavily at the information they got from those kids.
"Gossip sights are the worst…"
"It's as bad as high school gossip." You agreed, letting him help with the bags when he offered. "They don't check sources, they just run with the rumors."
Putting that disturbing information aside, the two of you talked about what you'd be getting for the Christmas party he was holding at his agency. Tai was bringing his lady love, the twins were bringing their boyfriends and you were bringing some friends. You three didn't usually go, not really ones for parties as you girls were more reserved and introverted, but this year was pretty different. The four of you were all together for once since you started going abroad for school, the twins were kicking off their careers with a running start, and Taishiro had just gone up in ranking, so this Christmas was pretty special.
Not even mentioning you were obviously lying about the boyfriend thing.
The jacket was for a friend you'd made a little over two years or so ago, now your boyfriend, and you both thought it a good idea if he actually met your family. You would have met his family but, well, he was a child of the commission, trained from a young age, and didn't remember much about his family, his childhood being intense training and no fun or very memorable moments.
But they'd get to meet him later, right now, Taishiro was getting a call from his sidekick for backup.
"You think you can drop me off, sweetpea? They need backup."
You nodded, letting the gifts float above you guys again as you spread your wings, the translucent shimmering constructs of what somehow seemed to be solid light, as impossible as they seemed, catching on the light of the sun. You hooked your arms under his and pushed off with ease, carrying him to the attack sight just a few blocks over.
"There!"
You nodded, letting him go as he dropped below, getting straight to work as you landed on the building to the side of it all to wait. He was off patrol soon anyway and you two still had to figure out where they were getting catering for the party. You guys had to get this all done a little over a week in advance because, well, all four of you ate quite a bit. Him for his quirk and you three because...well you guys were insatiable at times. You didn't know why, and the doctors couldn't figure it out, so all you guys could do is eat.
"Wow, one of these for me, Angel?"
You didn't need to turn to know who it was, but you did squeal in delight when you were pulled into the stairwell of the roof you were on, your boyfriend's face nuzzling between your wings, his hold careful around them as they illuminated the dim closed off area.
"Yes and no." You hummed, arms resting over his around your waist, enjoying his warmth in contrast to your cool skin. "I got something to model your gift after...have to make it sturdy knowing you."
"Oh? S'it a new pair of glasses?" He asked with a content sigh.
You shook your head, pulling away slightly to turn in his arms, your wings disappearing and giving your skin a slight pale lavender glow as you rested your chin on his shoulder, now down to a similar height as you'd shrunk down a bit.
"Not telling...you have to wait till Christmas."
"Awe, no hint?" He pouted his hold just a bit tighter. "How bout Christmas Eve then, little dove? Can I open it then?"
"Christmas Eve...a quarter to twelve?" You offered as a compromise.
It was technically still Christmas when he'd open it, but he'd agree. He knew that holiday was a big thing for you, your parents having died a few years back days before it. It was the first time your family was actually even celebrating it according to you. The last actual Christmas you'd had, had been two years ago, just before the two of you met.
"A quarter to twelve." He agreed.
You grinned, taking his face in your hands and pressing a kiss to his lips, only making it grow wider when you noted the faint taste of something on them.
"You cannibal." You giggled at the inside joke, pulling away as he laughed a genuine laugh, not something many have heard.
"Can't help it, Fried chicken is amazing."
That left you snorting in reply, pressing another chaste kiss to his lips. "Whatever bird brain, be careful out there." You said heading downstairs, hand glowing to light your way. "And maybe I'll treat you to some next time."
"I'll keep you to that!" He called down, the sound of the door opening coming after.
You sighed contentedly, getting to the door, which was boarded off, and pulling it open with ease into the abandoned parking garage. Part of you was still worried, and would always be worried. It was the same way when you thought of your brother going out every day. He was a pro hero, they both were, and their lives were considered dangerous. You knew they were helping people, and you were proud of that, but it'd never keep the worry out of your mind that one day, they might not come back. It scared you, made you panic to think one day you'd wake up and have to see them in a casket or have to carry them home in an urn or sit through another wake and funeral.
You shook your head, the intrusive thought nearly making tears well in your eyes. You found it funny how you never thought of death until your parents died.
With a deep breath, you let your wings out again, the glow fading slightly as you went downstairs, meeting up with Taishiro and his interns and sidekicks outside.
"Miss Fen! Nice to see you around again for the holidays!" His intern greeted.
"It's nice to see you again too, Yukkiko-san."

How to Get a Operating/Vacation Visa
7 a number of years previously I utilized to do the job and trip in Australia. These days, their working/getaway visa technique is extra highly effective than at any time. When you’re involving the ages of 18 and 30 and need the liberty to uncover non everlasting get the job performed in Australia, that is all of the issues you’ll need to know.
To be reliable, it’s a somewhat easy technique, significantly contemplating the truth that they automate every thing on the web. You don’t must fill out even a solitary piece of paper!
The initially section is to hitch the Performing Vacation getaway Maker system. On this software program, you apply for only one of two doing work visas: the Doing work Vacation break (subclass 417) or the Work and Vacation getaway (subclass 462). You’ll have to study the descriptions to come back throughout out which a single applies to you, however there are some widespread procedures that implement to the 2 visa varieties:
Specs to be Eligible to Get the job performed and Journey in Australia
1. You wish to personal a passport for a state collaborating within the WHM scheme. A lot, 28 international locations are collaborating:
Argentina, Bangladesh, Belgium, Canada, Chile, Cyprus, Denmark, Ecuador, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Hong Kong SAR, Indonesia, Eire, Italy, Japan, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, South Korea, Poland, Sweden, Taiwan, Thailand, Turkey, United Kingdom, and the USA.

3. You will want to have a return ticket, proof of onward journey on the end of your stay, or proof of the assets to spend money on a fare to depart Australia. I had none of those, so simply utilized a duplicate of my mother’s financial institution assertion
Tumblr media
When you meet up with all of those standards, you’re just about confirmed to get your visa—there’s no yearly cap on the quantity of doing work visas issued, and for those who haven’t guessed by now, the Australian govt will work actually robust to encourage younger seasonal staff to enter the nation. You can’t even get a typical 3-thirty day interval entry visa on the place, contemplating the truth that they select as much as Three occasions to technique. When you anticipate to wing it, you’re going to get into bother actually speedy. By no means even strive it.
Hope the applying technique for the working visa to take as much as four weeks, and to be on the protected facet, make the most of a few months previous to your journey (you’ll be able to make the most of as much as 12 months in progress).

Supplying you a weekly cost for remaining within the hostel though you receive the function you need.
Actively aiding you uncover that work, by steering you within the course of profession potentialities which have turn into accessible shut by and supplying you with treasured solutions and recommendation so you’ll be able to work and journey in Australia successfully with out getting a misplaced pet canine.

(via Grease Bomb: the (True) History of the Chiko Roll)
Made from a slurry of barley, rice, cabbage, carrot, animal fat and other veggies enclosed in a deep-fried chamber of egg and flour, the Chiko Roll could once be found at every fish and chip shop or milk bar worth its salt.
More or less an ocker spring roll, it was brought into existence by a boilermaker from regional Victoria named Frank McEncroe, who first stumbled across the carb-log at an Aussie Rules footy match.
A man of many talents, McEncroe left boilermaking in the ’50s to pursue his love of catering at sporting events. Amongst the meat pies, pastries and other fried food one weekend he noticed the ‘chop suey roll’ at a competitor’s stall. Immediately sold on the unique taste, McEncroe’s craftsman’s mind saw something more: the roll’s tough outer layer doubled as its own receptacle. It could be held in one hand with a beer in the other.
By hardy Australian standards the chop suey was a little flimsy. McEncroe strengthened the snack’s outer shell, so it was big enough to sustain tough footy punters and no-nonsense country folk. He called it the Chiko – a name careful to suggest chook without promising actual chicken – and it sold out at its debut at the Wagga Wagga Agricultural Show in 1951.
It wasn’t long before McEncroe moved to Melbourne, bought a small factory in the city’s west, and began mass-producing his invention with the aid of a sausage machine. The Chiko became big business. It was in every Aussie shop with a deep fryer by the mid-’60s. By the ’70s, more than 40 million were flooding the corner-store snack market, and over one million shipped to Japan. Flash forward 25 years and the ubiquitous roll is the subject of an international takeover, with Idahoan company Simplot moving McEncroe’s production to an industrial-sized factory in New South Wales where the rolls can be made in 12-metre chunks at a time.
Salted matter with notes of fat, it certainly wasn’t the taste that made the Chiko so famous. Solidifying the roll’s stature was the infamous Chiko Chick, a human mascot whose job was to hold – sometimes suggestively, sometimes wholesomely – the titular snack while straddling a motorbike. Though the ‘chick’ had been a part of the company’s branding since 1955, it was the ’80s iteration that was most memorable: the leather-clad lady atop a Harley became a mainstay of fish and chip shop décor long after the rolls stopped being served.
The same campaign was re-shot in 2000 with a younger model, but while the brand’s look may not have changed in 20 years, social mores certainly had. Australian photographer Sarah Jane King was the then face of Chiko, and vividly remembers the controversy that sprang from the poster. “There was a huge outcry by feminists. They thought the slogan ‘Grab a Chiko’ encouraged men to grab women,” she says. The image has since been toned down with ‘girl next door’ women, but the original raunchy model has stuck. King is still recognised by ‘fans’ in the street.
So where’s the Chiko now? Not surprisingly, the health food age hasn’t been kind to the corner store’s most jaundiced fried snack. Sales peaked at just 17 million in 2011, a far cry from the ’70s heyday, and the Chiko factory faces tough times with talks of government assistance. What’s good for the country’s waistline isn’t necessarily good for its hip pocket.
Still, there’s a silver lining to the foodie renaissance. In 2012, Sydney chef Daniel Hong brought the Chiko out of retirement for a special ‘Milk Bar Memories’ theme lunch at his restaurant Ms. G’s. “It was a nostalgia throwback,” Hong recalls. “I probably eat one every five years because I forget what they taste like, and every time I realise they’re not actually that good.”
Hong’s spruced-up version stuck to quality mince and vegetables, and while he won’t put the Chiko on the regular menu any time soon, Hong admits there’s something about it he can’t quite shake. “It brings me back to the suburban corner store where there was always a couple of potato scallops, a battered piece of fish, and a Chiko Roll. That’s what Chiko Rolls are to me.”
In 2001, McEncroe’s iconic snack turned 50. To celebrate, Simplot presented the mayor of Wagga Wagga with a gold-plated replica, a satin-lined box in place of the paper wrapper. Reports indicate that it was only slightly less nutritious than the original.

MSA +1: How Lewis Met Sydney
Starting school in the middle of the year was rough.  Kids have already made friends and formed groups for the most part. It’s not impossible to be added to an already formed group, but it can be difficult.
Being an unusually tall kid who has amnesia and showed up literally out of nowhere and talks to seemingly no one tends to alienate a person as Lewis was quick to find out.
It hurt that the other kids thought he was strange or scary.  He tried to make the best of it by talking to a janitor ghost who’d stuck around because he felt the school wasn’t kept clean enough.  Still, Lewis would like a friend his age.
And then Sydney transferred to their class.
Sydney had had to move suddenly due to her mother being transferred for work.  She’d lived in Kansas previously.  She wasn’t exactly happy about moving since she’d finally made some friends at her old school.  It wasn’t easy to make friends when she was so…weird.  Still, she didn’t really have much say, so here she was standing at the front of a new classroom in front of a bunch of kids.
“Everyone, this is Sydney Scoville…Jr?” the teacher stated with a bit of confusion at the last part.  She glanced at Sydney.  Sydney was wearing pants and a T-shirt with Wolverine on it so she would have been able to pass for a boy if she hadn’t worn a hair bow to prevent that from happening again.  It had been awkward enough in kindergarten when three weeks in she found out that everyone, even the teachers, thought she was a boy.  This teacher looked like she was trying to figure out if she should ask which Sydney was.  “So…why don’t you tell us about yourself?”
“I’m a girl,” said Sydney, just to get that out of the way.  “My dad wanted a junior and Sydneys can be boys and girls.  I like comics.  And cartoons of comics.  My dad reads me comics.  Sometimes my mom.  We need more comic cartoons.  I like Beast Wars too!  Waspinator talks funny like he’s buzzing at the same time.  And he blows up at least once an episode.  He must be immortal or something.  I like Dinobot too.  It’s too bad he died for real.  His clone just wasn’t the same.  He was creepy.  Why did Megatron keep cloning him anyway?  It’s not like the original liked him.”
“Uh, Sydney, you’re getting a bit off topic,” noted the teacher, who was already wondering how to handle this child.
“Oh. Sorry.  I have really bad ADHD.  You’ll probably have to tell me to pay attention a lot.”
“Thank you for telling me that,” said the teacher in a slightly strained voice.  “Why don’t you sit in the front?”
“Great!  I can never see over any of the other kids,” complained Sydney.  She really hated being short.
Sydney had to be told to pay attention two times, had a daydream about the X-Men, and tapped out a tune with her pencil when she was supposed to be doing a worksheet by the time recess came around.  She happily started swinging back and forth on the monkey bars for several minutes before running over to some sort of giant spider looking equipment.  She didn’t know what it was, but she could work with it.
“Onward my noble steed!  We will conquer the mantis men come hell or high water!”  Was Sydney attracting the attention of everyone on the playground? Yes.  Did she care?  No. “Ready the aphids!”  If they wanted to join in, she wouldn’t stop them.  If they didn’t, oh well.
“You’re weird,” said a boy who was missing a tooth.
“I know,” said Sydney as she tried to figure out what the aphids were even for.  Aphids ate grass and plants, but the mantis men wouldn’t be eating that.  Maybe it was a crop for their food animals?
“What’s wrong with you?”
And that hurt because Sydney liked how she was, even if it was far from perfect.  “What’s wrong with you?” she countered.
The boy bristled. “I’m not the crazy one!”
Sydney stuck her tongue out at him.  “You’re a meanie butt!”
The boy’s response was to grab at her shirt and nearly drag her off the spider.  “What’d you say?”
Sydney promptly headbutted him in the nose.  The boy dropped her to grab at his nose and she immediately tackled him to the ground.
Fortunately, one of the teachers had seen the boy grab her and reached them before Sydney could start punching the boy.  “Hey, break it up!”  She pulled Sydney off the boy.
“She hit me!” complained the boy, still holding his bleeding nose.
“You’re both going to the office!” said the teacher.
Sydney groaned. The first day and she was already gonna have to see the principal.  Just great.
The rest of the kids, Lewis included, just watched the two kids get marched back inside.  That was crazy.  That girl had just attacked Thomas.  Yeah, Thomas was a bully, but still…
Sydney got lucky. Thomas, the jerk, had caused problems before, so she got a warning and a call to her parents, but they didn’t have to come to school.  They’d probably take away her TV for a week or two, which was really annoying, but she was getting better at reading.
By the time Sydney was allowed to leave the office, it was time for lunch.  A secretary showed her the way to the cafeteria and where her class was sitting and left her to it.  Sydney looked around.  Most of the kids were sitting in groups.  A few seats could be open, but kids had placed items on them so they were off limits.
Near the end was Lewis sitting by himself and feeling lonely.  He really wanted someone to talk to.
Sydney, having decided this was the weird kids table, sat down across from Lewis.  “Hi.”
Lewis’ eyes widened. “H-hi.”
“Is this the weird kids table?  This seems like the weird kids table.”
Lewis looked down. He certainly wasn’t normal. “Yeah…”
Sydney nodded. “Good.  I’m Sydney.  I said that this morning.  I probably didn’t need to say it again.  What’s your name?”
“Lewis Pepper.”
“Ooh!  I love peppers!  Especially stuffed with melted cheese!” said Sydney as she started munching on wasabi peas.
“That does sound good,” agreed Lewis.  “What are those?”
“Wasabi peas. Want one?”  Sydney held one out.
Lewis eyed it carefully and took it.  It looked like a pea.  He put it in his mouth.  “Spicy!”
“Yeah, wasabi is like horseradish but Japanese and green,” explained Sydney.  “So, why are you weird?”
Lewis’ eyes widened again.  “Um…I, uh, don’t wanna say.”
“Okay,” said Sydney. She went back to eating.  “Do you like purple?  You’re wearing a lot of purple.  My dad says that’s royal stuff.  Are you a prince?”
“No,” said Lewis. “My parents are chefs.”
“Are you a chef too?” asked Sydney.  “What sort of stuff do you cook?”
“Oh, no, no, I’m too young!” said Lewis.
“That sucks,” muttered Sydney, ignoring the gasp from Lewis.  “I’m not allowed to help cook either, but that’s cause I would probably get distracted and set something on fire.  I bet you wouldn’t.”
“Wouldn’t…?”
“Set anything on fire.”
“Oh.”  Lewis wasn’t sure if he would or wouldn’t.  He wasn’t even sure how to work the stove. “Uh…So what do your parents do?”
“My mom just got promoted.  Now she’s a bank manager!  My dad does some part time stuff and makes cosplay parts.”
Lewis blinked. “Cos…play?”
“Yeah, costumes, like Halloween, ‘cept it’s whenever,” explained Sydney.  “I wanna be Sailor Moon next Halloween.  How ‘bout you?”
“I haven’t decided yet,” muttered Lewis.  He’d hadn’t figured out what he liked yet.
“You don’t talk a lot,” commented Sydney.
Lewis blushed. “Sorry.”
“Why?  There’s nothing wrong with that,” pointed out Sydney. “If you don’t like to talk, then you don’t have to.”
“Okay…”  Lewis just didn’t know what to make of Sydney. “You’re really different.”
Sydney nodded. “Yep!  I like being different.  Normal is boring.”
Lewis frowned. “What do you mean?”
“Well…”  She made a vague gesture towards their classmates. “Those kids probably have the same story.  They have parents with mostly normal jobs, families, they like playing with other kids. Girls like Princess stuff.  Boys like robots.  That sort of thing.  Not a lot of fun stuff to talk about.  Not something you’d remember.  You’ll remember me, right?”
“Definitely,” said Lewis.
Sydney nodded, taking a sip of her juice.  “And you don’t even know me yet.”
“So, you’re different because you want to be remembered?” questioned Lewis.
Sydney shook her head. “I’m different ‘cause I’m me.  If I had to change to make friends, then they’re not real friends.”
Lewis frowned. “What do you mean?”
“I’d be sad if I had to act like a normal girl.  So if they want me to be normal and sad, then they’re not my friend.”
Lewis had to admit that made a weird sort of sense.  “So, it’s better to be alone and happy than sad and with friends?”
“Yeah, but it’s even better to be happy with friends,” said Sydney.  “But…friends are a lot harder to find.”
Lewis tensed and glanced towards the other kids.  They must have had an easy time making friends with each other when school had started.  Lewis had tried, but when he’d talked about the dead people and the cemetery and not being able to remember things…the other children had called him scary.
Lewis didn’t want to be scary.
The bell rang, signaling that lunch was over.  The kids started to packed up and headed back to class.
The next day, Sydney decided not to do her bug war game.  Instead, she was climbing all over the jungle gym, pretending she was a monkey.  Maybe one of the ones from The Jungle Book. She started humming the song King Louie sang.  How did he mistake Baloo for a lady chimp?  Is he nearsighted?
“Um…”
Sydney looked from where she was hanging upside down and saw the boy she’d sat with at lunch yesterday.  What was his name again?  “Lewis!” she shouted, making him jump.
“Uh…”
“Hi!  What ‘cha doing?”
“…Can I play with you?”
Sydney brightened. “Sure!  I’m a Jungle Book monkey!  What do you wanna be?”
Lewis had never seen the Jungle Book.  “A puppy?”
“I love puppies! So, what brings you to King Louie’s kingdom?”
“…I got lost.”
“Yeah, this place is weird.  Wanna go find Mowgli?”
“Okay?”
“Let’s go!”
15 years later, Lewis thought back to that day as he looked at the picture in his anchor. He’d had no idea just how close the two of them would become, how much he would come to care for her.
He closed the anchor.
They’d see each other again soon.

A Day In The Life Of Melissa Leong, Food Writer + TV Presenter
A Day In The Life Of Melissa Leong, Food Writer + TV Presenter

If it’s a writing day, Mel starts off by checking her emails in the morning. Photo – Amelia Stanwix for The Design Files.

‘Every freelancer will also tell you that part of the job involves having a meaningful, long-term relationship with your local café’, says Mel. Archie’s is hers! Photo – Amelia Stanwix for The Design Files.
Growing up in Sydney’s southern suburbs ‘in a neighbourhood where migrant families like [Mel’s] were the exception rather than the rule’, Melissa Leong learned the value and importance of a strong work ethic from a young age. Her parents moved from Singapore to Sydney in the 70s, and ‘in typical migrant family style’, they sacrificed a lot for their kids to have every opportunity.
During her early career, Mel spent years working in a digital advertising career that left her unfulfilled and fantasising about pushing her boss out the window (her words, not mine!). A lifelong passion for food saw her spending all her spare time engrossed in food-related extracurricular activities – writing a blog, inventing recipes, and even flipping eggs on the weekends for a chef she admired, just for fun.
Mel’s blog was noticed by a local street press, who invited her to reinvigorate a defunct food column, which eventually led her to write for publications like Time Out Sydney and the Good Food Guides. Thanks to her charisma and street smarts, Mel accidentally took a detour into food PR, though eventually realised this wasn’t the space for her either. ‘One morning I woke up and decided to take a sabbatical’, she explains, and what was intended to be a 12-week break on a friend’s farm turned into a two-and-a-half year stint living on an abattoir and then a dairy farm.
Eventually heading back to Sydney to work on cookbooks with many of Australia’s most respected chefs, Mel’s world was suddenly brought to a halt after a life-changing auto-immune diagnosis that saw her bed bound for five months. ‘My hair started falling out, I couldn’t sleep, it was like a really, really bad hangover that lasted five months’, she tells. This difficult period in her life forced Mel to confront her tendency to burn out, and completely overhaul her relationship with her health. Daily exercise is now at the forefront of Mel’s routine, and knowing what projects to say ‘yes’ to and which ones to decline has been a key change.
These days Mel works as a consultant, food writer, and presenter on The Chef’s Line on SBS, and has found her sweet spot after recently moving from Sydney to Melbourne.
Mel’s life is fast-paced and varied, some days requiring her to be in front of the camera for hours on end, and others in front of a computer writing for a variety of different clients and publications. Her husband, Joe Jones (check out their ridiculously gorgeous wedding photos!), owns chic inner city watering hole Romeo Lane, and between the two of them, it can be difficult to find regularity in their hours. This means ‘working out other ways to create sanity’ outside of a consistent routine – whether that means hitting snooze a couple of extra times on a day when it doesn’t matter so much, or aligning their evening schedules.
FIRST THING
I wish I could say that the first thing I do is get up and meditate or something, but the reality is that the first thing I do is check social media and my email on my phone. I like to go through any questions or comments have come through overnight or deal with any bookings or requests that have come in from my manager.
If it’s a writing day at home, I wake around 9.30am because my husband Joe owns a bar and gets home around 2-3am and I find it hard to sleep before he gets home. If I’m filming, my day can start as early as 4.30am to get into hair and makeup on set by 5.00am. You don’t want to see that version of me, I promise! I drink filter coffee first thing, but when I am good, I try to have a cup of hot water with lemon or a shot of apple cider vinegar before. If I am honest, I love me a snooze button and a few extra minutes with my cats and my guy.
MORNING
Mornings are for coffee, work, self-care, and exercise.
I am without a doubt, NOT a morning person. But I can engineer myself to be when I need to be ‘on’, first thing, for work.
I am serious about skincare, so I take the time to take care of that part of my morning routine. Not long ago, I had a huge bout of life-shifting stress, and it gave me painful, cystic acne. So now I do what I can to take care of my skin, especially now that being camera-ready is part of the job. I love ASAP Skincare and Kora Organics because they’re Australian, not animal tested and super potent. But above all things, sunscreen of any kind, is crucial to good skin!
LUNCHTIME
Because mealtimes are often work times for me, I might be testing a recipe, shooting something, or researching a restaurant for a story. If I am working from home, it depends on the workload in terms of whether I’ll eat lunch ‘al desko’. I love it when I’m working on a recipe and can stop around lunchtime, to enjoy it. When food is your life, it makes sense, doesn’t it?!
If I get out of the house and can choose somewhere nearby to go, I really like Neko Neko for healthy Japanese wholefood styles, or I might head into the city to Dodee Paidang for lava-level Thai noodle soup.
Every freelancer will also tell you that part of the job involves having a meaningful, long-term relationship with your local café. The crew at Archie’s are always smiling, welcoming and generally the best people around, so I’m there every other day for meetings, catch-ups and sometimes, the odd cheeky breakfast Mimosa.
AFTERNOON
I’m not mad that the television and MC part of my job means that I get to play dress ups. Fashion is my sport, so any chance to get dressed up, is welcome. I work a lot with local Melbourne designers like jeweler to the (rock)stars, Emma Abrahams from Heart of Bone, or queen of style, Alice Edgeley. I’m about to head into a busy season of shooting and presenting, so I can often be found at Alice’s jewel box of a studio, having a fitting, chasing her poodle Rupert around, and gossiping about who wore what at the Met Gala.
EVENING
When the sun goes down, it’s my time to shine, baby! Many evenings, I have events or dinners to attend, or restaurants to research or review, which is usually one of the best parts of the job. It is never lost on me how lucky I am to get to eat, drink, travel and talk about it, and call it work.
When I do get home, I’m very much a fan of playing something like Seinfeld, Archer, The Simpsons or Brooklyn 99 in the background while I unwind. A cup of tea, a clean face and some time to hang out with my fuzzy flatmates is good for the soul and I couldn’t conceive of living without that kind of unconditional friendship.
If I’m travelling, I like to treat a hotel room like a day spa. It’s all about taking a bath, getting into a robe, donning a sheet mask and chilling the eff out. #robelife forever!

LAST THING
Check tomorrow’s agenda, set the alarm, one last social media scroll, then lights out!
Shopping for event looks at Edgeley. Photo – Amelia Stanwix for The Design Files.
Mel with Alice Edgley outside Edgley boutique on Gertrude Street. Photo – Amelia Stanwix for The Design Files.
Right now I’m listening to/watching/reading…
I’m into anything horror genre right now. I just finished The Haunting of Hill House, which was soooo creepy, dramatic and fun to watch.
I’m enjoy listening to podcasts on the road, Head Ovary Heels, Unstyled by Refinery29 and The New Yorker Radio Hour are great. Music-wise, a lot of Mötley Crüe, Marilyn Manson and Robyn.
One important thing I do every day is…
Exercise! In whatever way, moving is crucial for me to balance out the cerebral with the corporal. Whether it’s Pilates up the street at Good Times or a HIIT workout at home, I feel better when I move. Everything else in the day is a lucky dip!
I get my best work done when…
I’m ready. A lot of my writing involves doing other things for a while so that the ideas can form properly. I don’t work in a linear fashion where I complete one task before starting another. I’ve always been a fragmented worker, so I have learned to accept that stopping and starting doesn’t mean I’m doing it wrong. Procrastination is part of my process, and I’ve learned to accept that it’s not something I should feel guilty about.
A philosophy I live and work by is…
Work hard, don’t be a dick.
My productivity tip/tool is…
Write down what you need to get done, then get it done (however you choose to get there).
Something I wish I knew before I learned the hard way is…
You can really only rely on yourself. Don’t place undue expectations on others, because they won’t always come through. But if or when they do, it’s a nice surprise!

REAL TALK: Things That WOULD Happen When You Decide To Move Abroad Alone
“Where are you from?”, that’s the usual question I would always get when I decided to move to Australia 9 months ago. It is a remarkable journey and living a thousand miles away from home taught me so much about life, love, and the things I am capable of that I never knew before. Mainly, the reason why I left was because I wanted to put myself in an uncomfortable situation where I will be pushed to be the best of what I can be. For many of us, living abroad is a huge leap of faith and courage and yes, I absolutely agree. It takes a lot of courage, most especially if you decide to move to another country all by yourself. It would change you in so many levels.
A lot of people would think that living abroad is a luxury, as you get to make money of bigger currency than your own. A lot would think that life would be easier because you wouldn’t have to deal with the countless predicaments happening in your homeland. But, tell you what. Here are some of the things that are bound to happen when you decide to leave your home behind and it’s nothing like a fairy-tale like what you’ve been imagining:
1. REBUILDING EVERYTHING FROM SCRATCH AND ADJUSTING TO LONELINESS
It’s not just about settling in a whole new environment and living in a new house and a new country. It’s also about figuring out how to perform your daily activities like learning your ABCs when you were still a child. It’s basically trying to discover how to literally start from zero. When I first came here, I had to familiarize myself with the new currency until I just got used to it. I had to learn how to catch the bus and educate myself with the railway system. I relied on maps (I still do until now), and it’s always about getting lost and finding your way back. Going to the supermarket, eating out and sitting on a table for one, listening to music with your headphones plugged in for hours while spending time alone, these are the kinds of things that are BOUND to happen.
It is an exciting feeling at first, but as time passes by, it’s also that feeling that would make you question why you are doing this. You would constantly start talking to yourself, asking yourself questions and answering those questions yourself. You will be left alone with nothing but your own thoughts. At the end of the day, you have yourself only. The feeling of loneliness would always linger. Even though you are with your new found friends, it’s always a different feeling when you are talking to someone from home.
2.  YOU WILL GET REJECTED AT SOME POINT
The moment I stepped foot in Sydney, my first priority was to find a job that would sustain my expenses here. Sydney, as a matter of fact, is one of the most expensive cities in the world. Of course, I had to find a job that is somehow parallel to the unbelievably high cost of living. I thought it would be easy, as I am an experienced chef technologist back home with a Bachelor’s Degree and all that comes in between. But apparently, that’s not always what would make you “QUALIFIED”. Your level of education would not make you the best candidate for the role. It’s not your nationality, it’s not your gender, nor your age. In my industry, it’s always your skill that is the most relevant. They wouldn’t care if you have a Masters Degree, a PhD, a PRC License, or whatever. I have been rejected several times and I constantly asked myself why until I figured it out. I also experienced getting fired in the sales industry. It might be a little embarrassing to say, but let us all admit. Not everyone of us has the ability to do sales.
It might not just be career-wise, but also in other aspects of living abroad. Struggles like finding a house to live in, trying to get medicare, and finding the right person to tell your frustrations is a never-ending ordeal.
 3. THE STRUGGLE OF FITTING IN
The thing is, when you decide to move in a country outside your own, you will always have that destitution of trying to fit in. Cultural difference is often a set-back and language barriers would always draw you to the ground. Questions like “How do I say this nicely and without being rude in their language?” or “Would they accept me even if I’m not originally from here?”
It is something that I have fully accepted when I decided to move to Australia. No matter what I do, I am still a citizen from another country. I have no roots here, therefore I would never fit in 100 percent. This is not my home, but I would be forever grateful that Australia has allowed me to call it my second home. Somehow, I receive some of the benefits of living in a first-world country and I am being treated fairly. I receive good education and my instructors and colleagues would treat me like I am their own. That is good enough for me perhaps. If there’s one thing that I have learned here, it’s to never isolate yourself from the people that you would meet along the way. Keep an open-mind and be welcoming of others’ opinions and backgrounds.
4. MAKING LONG DISTANCE RELATIONSHIPS WORK
One of the hardest parts of living abroad on your own is the fact that you live further away from the people you love. Idealistically , it’s easier with technology nowadays because we now have Viber, Skype, Facebook, and all other social media platforms that would allow us to keep in touch with our loved ones. However, there would always be a down fall. It’s a niche, communication is the most essential part in a long-distance relationship. For the people back home, it tends to be easier because somehow they are in their comfort zone, living with their families and having their own sets of friends around them. But, for the person living abroad it’s a whole new struggle. The worries of miscommunication, fear of being left out, and the sense of belonging would tear you apart. It is a relentless battle with time most especially if there is a time difference.
Questions and phrases like “Are they OK?” , “I wonder what they’re doing back home”, “It’s meal time there, I wonder if they’ve already eaten.”, “What are they having for lunch/dinner?”, “I wonder where they are at the moment.”, “Are they thinking about me?” You are constantly missing them. No matter how hard you try, there will always be a part of you that is longing for them.
Even if you are not a clingy type of person, the feeling of wanting to belong in their daily lives even if you’re far apart would make you cling even more. It is heartbreaking that some of them would never understand you and what you are going through while you are far away from home.
5. FEELING GUILTY ALL THE TIME
Admit it, deciding to live abroad is factually a selfish choice. Yes, it takes guts and extraordinary amount of motivation. You would think of it is an adventure and it is actually good that you are doing what you want to do and going to where your dreams are taking you. However, it is DEVASTATING to your parents and loved ones. No matter how hard they try to keep it from you, they are sad that you left.
I am blessed to have a Mom who supports me all the way, but I know that in exchange of my thrilling quest to find myself is her grief. This is the first time that I have been separated from my Mom over a long period. In my entire years of existence, I have been beside my Mom. From doing the groceries, shopping clothes, walking our dog, I do everything with Mom. When I left for Sydney, my Mom did an impressive job of hiding her tears from me. She was holding it in. The fear of having her precious daughter miles away from her, living in a country where cultural views are far from what we were used to is always there. My Mom showed me how to be brave, and for that I am forever thankful.
Making the decision of moving abroad is a massive step. It simply allows you to explore the world and open opportunities. It teaches you so much about independence. It is definitely a challenge. At the very end it is still worth it because nothing worthy comes easy. 🙂
“There is a palpable fear to living in a new country, and though it is more acute in the first months, even year, of your stay, it never completely evaporates as time goes on. It simply changes. The anxiousness that was once concentrated on how you’re going to make new friends, adjust, and master the nuances of the language has become the repeated question “What am I missing?” As you settle into your new life and country, as time passes and becomes less a question of how long you’ve been here and more one of how long you’ve been gone, you realize that life back home has gone on without you.” – Chelsea Fagan

I recently read an article that quizzed Dr. Michele Borba (author of UnSelfie: Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me-World) on how to teach children empathy; number three on her list was creating a ‘family mantra’ (I texted my husband to workshop this and he unsurprisingly did not respond).
It may not extend to her family, but the mantra of media-slashie Yumi Stynes is definitely ‘zero f*cks’.
Today we talk with the straight-shooting mum of four about multi-tasking, podcasting, making the most of maternity leave, and more.
You’ve said you had never wanted to become a Mum but experienced an incredible biological impulse to get pregnant at age 25, and that your first-born Anouk saved your life. Three kids on, you present, podcast and write in amongst managing your family’s mental load – Yumi, are you Australia’s most masterful multi-tasker? Apart from having an incredibly supportive partner, how do you do it? Have you kept your pledge to do less at home? Is it even possible to give up gatekeeping?
Thank you for that flattering question, ha! A couple of truths I’d like to underline – yes, my partner is a ridiculously competent and enthusiastic participant in parenting and its accompanying daily domestic drudgery. My life would not be possible without this help. I do multi-task like a juggling octopus, but I think most parents do – we keep the balls in the air, because we have to.
For the most part I’ve kept my pledge to do less at home… but to be honest, most of that ‘less’ involves hands-on caring for the children. I still do all the cooking and management of our social calendars, but my partner does most of the bedtime reading, bathing and other stuff he loves to do but I find quite boring. Quitting gatekeeping of domestic chores is easier when you realise you actually have zero fucks left to give.
Every parent has survived at least one incident of shaming, but my postmistress telling me off for bottle feeding in no way compares with the public outcry you experienced after ‘Paddington Bear’ (it was summer in Sydney and Yumi brought then-baby Mercy along to the premiere in a nappy). Why do you think it is that mothers tend to tear each other down instead of boosting each other up – when we’re all in the same bonkers boat? What would you say about parenting in the public eye to those so quick to judge?
I’m not sure if it was other mothers having a go at me, it felt more like a bunch of people who found me annoying and thought it was a fair opportunity to give me a kicking. I was shocked and tipped off-balance when it happened as I’d been on maternity leave of sorts for a year and was not in fight mode – I was definitely not match-fit. On reflection, the whole thing was a giant heap of bullshit; I can’t believe anyone wasted their energy arguing about whether it was right to bring a baby out wearing nothing but a nappy on a hot day. Those people can just fuck off.
As for parenting in public or private, I don’t know anyone who isn’t just doing their best. Judgement happens, but I think all you can do is brush it off your shoulder – like the insignificant fluff it is.
I’m a big fan of Ladies We Need To Talk (it’s my must-listen along with The New Normal for all things Mum), and have found myself increasingly turning to podcasts (not sure if this can be attributed to the pursuit of quality over quantity content, or being time poor). How does the experience of working on the series compare with your current and past presenting, and have you any other favourite podcasts you’d like to share?
Working on Ladies We Need To Talk.has been an unbelievable experience, and we’re only halfway through season two! Allow me to answer your question in three parts.
First of all, when I started working on Ladies I was really struck with how ethical and diligent the team were. We approach every new topic with a very keen sense of responsibility to our listeners – to research thoroughly and speak truthfully. I love that so much.
Then there is the audience, who are so enthusiastic every time a new episode drops, and who clamour to share it with their friends. I’ve never had something I’ve worked on be so shared through word-of-mouth. It’s insane.
And then there’s my own personal experience, acquiring actual life-changing knowledge with each episode. I started out Season One thinking I knew everything and was this totally empowered woman, but I’ve still so much to learn. I feel different, I am different, because of this podcast.
The podcasts I love tend to be music-related, like Song Exploder and Switch on Pop – there’s nothing more delightful to me than nerdy dissection of popular music. This year, I’ve deeply loved a podcast about research into Isis called Caliphate; I also listen to my own radio show, The 3pm Pick-up, on podcast because I like to make sure I don’t sound like an asshole!
Growing up you wanted to be a chef but were put off by the industry’s aggressive energy – what was it that inspired you to finally pursue a culinary path with the Zero F*cks Cookbook, conjured while on maternity leave? Can you also share your go-to weeknight recipe from the book, and tell us a bit about the sequel due this summer – plus the non-food related publication you’re currently working on?
Yeah, I wanted to be a chef when I was a kid. My sisters tell me I loved squelching things together – that visceral blobbing of wet and dry ingredients, and the magic of adding heat. I never became a chef, but my oldest child is 16, so I’ve been cooking for a family for nearly two decades.
I mentioned maternity leave before, but when you freelance and take time off to have a baby, there’s not necessarily a job waiting for you when you’re ready to start back. I’d had a chunk of time off after my third kid and was desperate to get out amongst it, but I had to make my own opportunities. Making easy, health food was so native to me, the book wrote itself – like when musicians wake up with a perfect pop song written in their heads! Taking the cookbook to market was a joy because it was all so clear to me; rejection meant nothing because the idea was bullet-proof.
I knew Zero F*cks would be a hit because I am the exact kind of person who needs such a book: I am busy, I love food, I cook. I started writing the follow-up before the first one had even been printed, so I was ready to pull the trigger on that quick smart. The Zero F*cks Sequel should be out in time for Christmas and it’s bigger, funnier and swearier than the first.
As for the non-food project I’m working on, it’s still a bit top secret. It’s more in the vein of the work I do on Ladies, and I’m so excited about it that I get blinding surges of pleasure whenever I think about it!
How do your days start and end with Anouk, Dee Dee, Mercy and ‘Man Baby’? You’ve said you work hard on being honest, but do you have any other tips and traditions for raising four kids – particularly ones a generation apart?
My days start when I wake up at 6.30am, after which I pretty much run from the time the babies wake until around 11pm, when my partner and I lie side-by-side in bed, shell shocked and staring into our phones.
Raising four kids is total madness but it almost balances itself out with the great big gap. There’s 10 years between the first batch of kids (Anouk and Dee Dee) and the second (Mercy and Manbaby). The older ones thrill their younger siblings just by existing – they don’t have to do anything, they’re just hero-worshipped and magnificent and heavenly goddesses. The younger ones are bonkers and poo their pants and run around doing irrational shit like trying to stab each other with spoons, and somewhere among it all they’re learning to be decent humans with a basic sense of respect and humour.
One of the things we do is eat together every evening. We never have incidental TV watching – it’s either on because we’re watching something and engaged with it, or it’s off.  And finally, I think the kids learn a lot by observing how I treat my own mother. She is an imperfect and wonderful human being, and I love her thoroughly. I very much hope that they will view me similarly when I’m an old lady.
Moving across time, what kind of adults might you like your foursome to grow into? How would you like them to remember you to their own families?
I don’t really mind what my children become so long as their laughter muscle is well exercised! I hope they have fun and treat their bodies like some people treat their cars (lots of attention and maintenance) and treat their friends and families as their greatest treasures.
FAMILY FAVOURITES
  Activity or outing
I have four kids who will swim in any body of water no matter what the weather or water temperature, so the best kind of family outing usually involves a swim with a little esky full of apples and cheese and crackers and homemade snacks. When the babies are grumpy, or the teens are crackling with what I call ‘that static energy,’ a good long swim usually soothes their souls and calms them down.
Dinner destination
This is such a wank, but I love to go out for a vegan degustation meal. You feel pampered and at the end, you don’t feel disgusting.
Book, film, or show
The TV show Atlanta is the greatest show of the last five years and I’m not interested in hearing arguments to the contrary.
Place to travel
Japan. My mother is Japanese and we have been travelling to Japan since I was little. The reasons Japan is so great are obvious and numerous – the food, the culture, the nature, the snow – but I also love it because I only ever want to visit. I’m quite happy right here.
