Katara
Tumblr media
The lovely Katara, she's an overthinker and so when she realises she likes you she overthinks big time! Sure the two of you have great chemistry but what if you're just like that with everyone? You might've told Toph she was your ideal type but does that mean you're really interested in her? Yes she can't seem to get you out of her head but what if she ruins your friendship by telling you?
She's a mess and so enter her loudmouth brother (I say that with love) to the *rescue*
Sokka of course knows Katara likes you and teases her anytime you enter the room. This makes Katara very angry and she nearly always ends up exploding. You somehow never noticed though, you just assumed it was siblings being siblings and had no clue you were anything to do with it.
One day however Katara was in a bad mood and so when Sokka started teasing her about you she lost it. Sokka was also in a bad mood and he snapped back. You witnessed the siblings getting worse and worse and tried to stop it when Sokka yelled "well it's not my fault you're too much of a coward to tell y/n you like her!".
*Silence*
Katara was as still as a statue and that scared Sokka. "Katara...Katara" he said "yell at me or slap me with water. Just say something". In response Katara just ran from the room. Sokka went to follow but you asked to go instead. You found her crying nearby and went to comfort her. Katara assumed it was because you were a nice person until you told her you liked her too. Then Katara beamed up at you, her beautiful blue eyes still shining with tears which you wiped away gently. "Want me to help you get back at Sokka?" you asked. That’s how Katara knew you were perfect for her.
So the two of you started dating and it was bliss. There’s something called a honeymoon period when a couple starts dating which is where the first few weeks/months are complete bliss and happiness. Well Katara gave you the most honeymoon of honeymoon periods. She is a caring and romantic person so you got special treatment. Every morning she'd compliment you or tell you something new she'd noticed about you like that speckle in your eye or the way you pronounce a word. She'd create adorable well-thought-out nicknames for you and would bring you random gifts like flowers just because. She'd leave small love notes and poems around for you to find to show how much she cares for you. For your one-month anniversary, she creates a small ice sculpture of your favourite animal.
Even after the honeymoon phase Katara remains a caring partner. She's always there if you need to cry or rant about how your day was. She never forgets a single thing you tell her and always smiles when you walk through the door.
Of course she's also always there with her extraordinary healing powers which she uses anytime you get injured or even just for massages sometimes when you’re stressed.
Katara's friends and family love you. Sokka claims he's the reason the two of you got together and calls you his family pretty much from the start. Toph says the two of you were too lovey-dovey but even she has to admit you're perfect for each other.
Aang...has nothing but nice things to say about you two! Of course dating the Avatar's ex-girlfriend is terrifying to say the least. If Aang wanted to he could just drop you down a volcano or air-bend you to Ba Sing Sei but this is Aang we're talking about. He'll always care about Katara and if you can make her happy in a way he couldn't...then he's thrilled. He’d probably even thank you one day for making her smile so much. Honestly he’s the best ex-partner you could ever have!
Katara might seem like the loving caring motherly figure but the quickest way to anger her is to hurt you in any way. Katara is one of the most powerful benders in the world so obviously protecting you physically is a piece of cake and she won’t hesitate to use her bending to lightly knock someone away from you or smack anyone being rude to you. She’s also not afraid to verbally defend you and hell hath no fury like a waterbender scorned. Once you had to physically drag her away from a man she was trying to fight because he made an unsolicited comment about your appearance. He totally deserved to go one-on-one with Katara but you didn’t want her getting into trouble with the authorities again so let him get away with it...this time.
Katara would say "i love you" pretty quickly. She'd probably already have strong emotions for you before you even started dating so when you actually got together it didn't take long for her to fall in love with you. Katara would be nervous to tell you but also wouldn't be able to wait for long. So she'd probably just take you to one side on a random evening and explain she has something to tell you. Her hands would shake while she said it and she'd be watching you to look for any hint of disapproval but when you gasped and smiled she melts.
Katara always blushes when you compliment her and no matter how long you’ve been together she still gets butterflies in her stomach when you do. So of course you do it even more seeing the affect it has on her. Katara isn’t one to big herself up. She just gets on with things and (like a lot of women) never expects any credit for it. So you make sure to always compliment her and try to tell her something you like about her every single day.
Katara takes you to her tribe pretty quickly because her culture is of course very important. You are a nervous wreck and recruit Sokka for help. You want to learn all the customs and every bit of history so you can leave a good impression. Sokka loves his professor role and takes to it a little too well...he basically becomes mad with power. The night before your journey Katara can't find you and wanders the house you're staying at trying to find you. She hears Sokka's voice coming from the library which is weird because he went to bed hours ago. She steps inside to see Sokka yelling questions at you. "What is going on?" she asked and you both freeze. "Katara...hey" you said and Sokka glared "who dares disturb my lesson?". "Lesson? What lesson?" Katara asked and Sokka shrugged "the lesson to make y/n a master of water tribe history and customs, duh? Now get out! Y/n isn't allowed to leave until she can recite all our past tribe leaders". "Is this why you've been so tired lately?" Katara asked you "you've been sneaking here to study at night?". "And at dawn too" Sokka said "and sometimes in the day if I feel like giving y/n a quiz". "Woah that's a lot" Katara said "y/n you know you don't need to do this right?" Katara asked. Sokka went to argue that of course you had to do this when Katara kicked him out of the room using water bending. "I know I don't have to do this but I want to" you told Katara "I want to know everything I can about your culture so I can respect it and honour it properly. Plus I want your family and tribe to like me so there's that too...I just want to make this visit as perfect as possible". Katara shook her head "that is the sweetest thing I've ever heard but it still doesn't excuse overworking yourself like this". "It doesn't?" you asked and Katara shook her head "not at all! Plus y/n your dedication to being respectful and your willingness to learn new customs is already a huge indication you're going to do great. I think it's really sweet how much you've thought about it and I know my whole tribe will think so too, they’re going to love you!". "You really think so?" you asked and Katara nodded "of course! Plus I'll be beside you every step of the way to help".
Katara LOVES birthdays and always makes yours as special as she possibly can. She’d have things planned from start to finish. You’d wake up to breakfast in bed and do your favourite morning activity together like baking or reading. Then in the afternoon she’d take you out for a nice lunch and you’d open up your presents from her (which are always amazing because it’s Katara). Then you’d go home and do something fun like watch your favourite movie together or play a new game she got you. In the evening, she’d invite all your friends and family around to celebrate. She’d have all your favourite food and drinks and would make sure everything was exactly how you liked it. She’d also be constantly checking up on you to make sure you were having a good time and if anyone and I mean anyone caused a scene or made you unhappy they’d be out of there before Aang can say yip yip. You’d be exhausted by the end of the night but would feel so loved and appreciated.
Katara might be a little inclined to go overboard supporting you with your career just because typically in her tribe one person worked and the other supported. So you’d have to keep an eye on that and ensure she wasn’t putting your career ahead of her own. You’d encourage her to use her skill as the greatest water bender in the world and she’d set up a school specifically for female benders. Katara would be shocked when you told her career-wise, you’d follow her lead because she hadn’t ever expected a partner like that. You’d work out a balance where you’re both supporting each other and it’s a beautiful partnership.
When the two of you have a fight it's very emotional and intense...but is over pretty quickly. We've seen Katara has a temper and so she'd snap and go from 1 to 100 pretty quickly. You'd both scream at each other for like 10 minutes but then one of you would get upset or say something you didn't mean and you'd both calm down and realise how silly the fight was. Katara always apologises after an argument and then it's like nothing ever happened.
You and Katara do not exercise together. You tried once and Katara got too competative. She’d notice how far you’d ran on the treadmill and want to beat you, so she’d increase her speed. You’d noticed what she was doing and also pick up speed, which made Katara increase her speed again until you were both running far too fast. Long story short you fell of the treadmill, Katara had to heal you and you were asked not to come back to that gym anymore. So exercising seperately works for you!
I can't see Katara with pets just because she seems a lot more kid-focused than animal-focused. However if you're not kid-focused that doesn't mean you can't get a pet! Katara would be tending to the neighbours' kid while you're busy playing with their dog or something. "Y/n come look at the new baby" Katara called and you nodded "yeah one second...who's a good girl? Who's a good girl?" you asked stroking the neighbour's polar bear dog. You didn't end up getting around to holding the baby and that was just fine with you.
Katara is just an incredibly kind and considerate partner. She makes you feel loved and special every day and she really does have the biggest heart in the world. You’re a lucky person.
Zuko
Tumblr media
Zuko doesn't realise he likes you until someone points it out to him and it would probably be Sokka too. He'd see you and Zuko just enjoying each other's company and ask Zuko why he hasn't asked you out yet. "Y/n? Because we're just friends!". "Are you sure about that because you smile every time she comes around". Zuko snorted "I think i'd know if I liked y/n..." then he thought about it for a few seconds and his jaw dropped. "There he goes" Sokka smirked.
Once Zuko realises he likes you he panics. He becomes the most awkward person in the world around you and blushes pretty much anytime you speak to him. You notice something weird is going on and ask Zuko if something's wrong. "Everything's completely fine! Why would you think anything's wrong?" he replied his voice getting higher towards the end. "Just you seem really tense and nervous, you keep pacing around and staring at your feet". Zuko's breath began to speed up and he was in full panic mode. "I have no idea what you mean!". Zuko was getting ready to rush out of the room when you smiled "would you maybe like to go out with me sometime? Like on a date?". Zuko paused "pardon?". "A date?" you repeated "with me". "Sokka told you didn't he!" Zuko cried and you shook your head "not at all...I just heard you talking about it. I didn't overhear the whole conversation but from how you've been acting I think I can guess what you said so...how about it? Would you like to go on a date?". Zuko nodded I'd love to!" and that was that.
You thought once you started dating Zuko would be less awkward but no. He was just as unsure and bashful but he got more confident with time. His only other relationship had been with his childhood sweetheart so of course this was all new to him and you had to show him the ropes a little. He really enjoyed all the stereotypical dates and the first time you got him flowers he nearly cried.
Zuko isn't the most intuitive partner but he has the best intentions. He's not good at sensing what you need or being able to tell your mood from looking at you but he's a fire bender not a mind reader! So communication is really important and the second you tell him you need something, he won’t hesitate to give it you.
Zuko’s friends are happy the second Zuko tells them he’s found someone. Being the Firelord at such a young age can be really lonely, especially seeing as he has no family around…but lately they had noticed a change in him. He’d been smiling more and his shoulder were more relaxed. The pressures of the throne hadn’t been affecting him as much and they all wondered why…until he introduced you.
For Zuko to tell them about you they know he must really like you and when they see you together that becomes very clear. Zuko just brightens around you and for good reason, you’re kind and caring and clearly want the best for him. So they all pretty much accept you into the group right away.
Zuko’s ex Mai is an impressive member of the Fire Nation society, not to mention one of Zuko’s few childhood friends so she’s always going to be in Zuko’s life. Your first meeting Zuko is terrified and has guards at the ready in case Mai decides to play target practice but Zuko should know by now Mai isn’t dramatic. She brings Ty lee as a middle person and greets you formally but warmly. “Welcome to the Fire Nation! Don’t worry we’re not all obsessed with honour like Zuko or permanently peppy like Ty lee. Some of us are normal…or well normal-ish” Mai says “this is the Fire Nation”. You smile at her joke and ask her about her skill with knives and combat. You talk for a good few minutes (which for Mai is like an hour) and then both move on. Zuko lets out a breath as he sees you step away from each but he didn’t need to worry. It takes a lot to make Mai angry and her ex moving on and being happy sure isn’t going to do it.
Zuko is one of the youngest Firelords in recent history and so he puts up with a lot of people questioning his decisions and he himself as ruler but one thing he does not tolerate is anyone trying to debate his relationship with you. Of course his advisors try the second he announces your relationship and he gives them a strict warning that the next time someone wants to speak ill of you or to pry into your life they will be off the council. He can become a big scary Firelord at times.
Zuko would have no clue how to tell you he loves you. He's so awkward and unsure he'd be a mess. You'd be able to tell something was going on because you'd catch Zuko just quietly watching you or sometimes he'd trail off midsentence. Whenever you asked him about it he'd go bright red and come up with some fake excuse like you had something on your face. Then finally it gets to be too much and he just kind of...yells it at you? It explodes out of him at some random moment and it takes a few seconds for you to work out what he's saying. "You love me?" you asked and Zuko nodded "yeah...unless you don't want me to". You laughed "of course I want you to Zuko and I love you too!". Then Zuko would do that really happy smile (see the photo above) and he'd go around the palace grinning for weeks.
Zuko. Cannot. Take. Compliments.
Even with a gun to his head, Zuko just cannot accept compliments. His brain freaks out when someone tries to pay him a compliment and he will deny all of them. You could literally say “your hair is nice and dark” and he’d disagree. This is a problem because Zuko is a guy worthy on many compliments and you cannot refrain from complimenting him. So your solution is the psychological technique for phobias called flooding. You basically just bombard Zuko with compliments until he begins to accept them. Slowly but surely it works! You’ve get him to stop verbally disagreeing with your compliments and instead he just shrugs slightly which is an amazing improvement.
Zuko's family is complicated...half of his family adores him unrealistically the other half barely tolerates his presence. Things with Azula and Zuko are still tense but better now they're older and after hearing all his sister went through, you really want to become friends with her. Zuko is shocked because most people run from his sister but not you. At the next family gathering, you notice Azula by herself on the side and go right over to her. You introduce yourself and ask how she is. She seems shocked and gives short answers awkwardly. You do this at every event, just small regular conversations until Azula begins accustomed to your presence. When you and Zuko arrive late to Ty lee's birthday party she sweeps over to you practically sighing in relief. "Thank god you're here! You're the only person at these things I can stomach sober". You chuckled while Zuko frowns "erm Azula? I'm here too". "Yes hi Zuzu, good to see you. Now can I borrow your partner, she’s my emotional support at these things". Zuko seems surprised and looks at you to see if you're fine with it but you're smiling and nodding perfectly happy. "Okay..." he nods and watches as the two of you disappear together. You help Zuko and Azula grow closer and your kind gesture of including Azula in your lives is greatly appreciated by the princess. The two siblings become regular fixtures in each other's lives and it's all down to you.
Being a member of the royal family Zuko doesn’t understand birthdays. In his family each year of a successful reign was more important and only big birthdays really meant anything. So he doesn’t get what you do to celebrate a birthday and at first is opposed to it. “Doesn’t it get boring year after year?” he asked you the first year you celebrated his birthday and you shook your head “not at all!”. Then slowly Zuko started really liking a day only for him. He’d get so excited the days leading up to his birthday while you were secretly planning events and wrapping up his presents. He tried to pretend he doesn’t care but he struggles to sleep the night before because he can’t wait. You notice the subtle changes and when he gasps at having a whole cake just for him he knows the cat is out of the bag. “Okay so I might really like this birthday thing” he admits blushing and you smiled “I’m glad you like it Zuko”.
Dating the Firelord would make finding a job hard because you never know if they actually want you or the Firelord's partner. So Zuko would make sure to really separate himself from your work so you can tell your company when and if you want to. Alternatively Zuko is totally cool with using his power to get you stuff so if you want to take advantage of dating the sovereign he's all for it! You want a job in your favourite flower shop? He clears a space in the palace gardens for you to practice. You want to become a doctor? All the palace doctors are your tutors. You're interested in geology? Let him just send a message to his friend Toph Beifong to explain everything she knows about rocks to you. Zuko will give as much or as little as you want.
Now Zuko is extremely hot-headed (his element is fire) so fights with him would be pretty explosive and can get heated. This is especially the case when Zuko feels insecure or hurt. He tends to lash out, saying things he didn't mean to say and then instantly regrets it. Afterwards he is distraught and pretty much does everything to make it up to you. He's really mopey when you're angry at him and when you finally forgive him he'd probably cry. He's an emotional boy our Firelord but we love him.
Working out with Zuko would be funny because he has no idea how hot he is when he works out. He has no clue he looks amazing when firebending and so just wonders why you’re staring at him. “What do I have something on my face?” he asked. “No more like you’re not wearing a shirt” you reply and Zuko blushes. “Oh...i’ll put one on. I didn’t realise”. So while you do enjoy exercising with Zuko, you don’t get much exercising done so have to work out on your own.
Zuko already has a pet...A DRAGON! So he's got the coolest animal companion you could ever want and you'd quickly become involved in Druk's life. Meeting Druk would honestly be a pretty big deal because dragons are so key to Zuko's heritage and his nation’s future so you'd be pretty scared. But the second you touched Druk's nose with your hand you'd feel the warmth radiating from him and you'd feel the bond he has with Zuko making you feel right at home. After that Druk is a huge softie for you and often goes to you when he's done something wrong so you'll protect him from Zuko. He knows Zuko can never say no to you so you're Druk's biggest protector. You also have lots and lots of dragon rides with Zuko which make the most amazing dates.
Zuko is a passionate and emotional partner. He might sometimes do things without thinking but his intentions for you are always good and the second he feels that connection with you that’s it. You’re his everything and he’d do anything to make you happy be that opposing his council or changing the mind of his people. He’s not afraid to make hard decisions for you because at the end of the day, you make it all worth it for him.
Suki
Tumblr media
Suki is a boss so when she realised she has feelings for you, she would be pretty upfront and just ask you out. There would be no skirting     around it or awkwardness either.
She'd of course have it all planned though, she's not the leader of the greatest warriors of all time for nothing. She'd have meticulously     organised what she wanted to say and deliver it perfectly. A little too     perfectly...you were intimidated as she made eye contact the entire time     and didn't stutter once! However after she finished she shot you a big     smile which made you relax and of course tell her you liked her too.
That's how you get together! As simple as that.
When you start dating, Suki is amazing from day one. She knows     exactly how to play it and is very cool and relaxed while also making you  feel special. She's the type to leave small gifts with handwritten notes     just because. Also flowers! She will buy you flowers and leave them in a place she knows you’ll find but not bouquets, a single rose or lily because it's less showy and more intimate.
Suki is the best girlfriend ever! As a partner she is intuitive, thoughtful and makes you smile all the time. She's not one to go over the top with lovey-dovey stuff but she always makes you feel safe and wanted. She has a pretty demanding job but she always makes time for you and keeps her promises. You know you're important to her.
Suki always smiled and makes a joke about how right you are when you compliment here but you notice quickly she doesn’t really believe you. She typically brushes away your words hiding behind her smug smile and jokes. Being part of an elite team, she doesn’t know how to admit she, individually has done something right and you aim to change that. Any time you compliment Suki and she brushes it away you stop her.
“You’re so thoughtful” you said one day when Suki bought you some blueberries on her way home just because she knew you liked them. She shrugged “I’m just amazing i know”. You smiled but shook your head “you are Suki, you’re a wonderful thoughtful person who I fall for more and more each day”. That would leave Suki silent and emotional. Slowly but surely she was starting to belive your compliments.
The warriors would love you! They're all very supportive of one another so would be pleased to see Suki happy and welcome you with open arms. This was a little intimidating considering they were all highly skilled warriors who could kill you in seconds and there were a rather lot of them. So you were more than a little overwhelmed which Suki noticed. She dialled back her excited friends and started introducing you to them in smaller groups instead week by week. She did this gradually and never     got annoyed with you but went completely at your pace. The way Suki     handled your social anxiety made you fall for her even quicker.
Suki's ex Sokka did not handle your new relationship as well. Sokka     can be pretty immature so even though he and Suki parted on good terms he was jealous when he heard you were dating. More so because it made him feel like Suki was completely over him and had left him behind. He basically thought she'd won and he'd lost.
Sokka handled this by being rude to you. He'd make sarcastic     comments about you and anytime Katara or Aang spoke to you he'd huff and pout. However this didn't last long because Katara exploded at him and told him he better not make you feel bad just because he was insecure.
Suki happened to overhear the conversation and she took Sokka to one side and they had a talk about how they'd always be important to one     another and no new relationship could erase all the good memories that they’d had together. After that Sokka was lovely to you and he actually     officiated your partnership ceremony years later.
However when anyone who isn’t her old friend insults you Suki goes all Kyoshi Warrior on them. Suki prefers shows of force so will fight anyone who disrespects you. You had to stop her coming into your work once because you were worried she might put your manager in a chokehold. She’s very  protective of you and won’t hesitate to bring down the full force of Kyoshi on anyone.
Surprisingly Suki would struggle with the L word. Not because she feels uncomfortable with the emotion but just because she’s not sure how to tell you. She’s quite physical so being verbally vulnerable is scary to her. She’d probably ask her sisters or Ty lee for help and they’d tell her to just take you someplace nice and be honest.
So she takes you to a place in the Fire Nation where you had your first date. It’d be a nice quiet evening and there were only a few other     people around. Suki is good at hiding her emotions so you’d have no idea how nervous she is. She would eventually build up the courage to tell you she loved you and then reassure you it’s okay if you’re not there yet with your feelings for her. She’d finished her perfectly crafted speech and waited nervously for your response. You of course tell her you love her back and she’d smile so brightly. Then you go on to tell her everything you love about her and she’s a blushing mess. It takes a lot to make your girlfriend blush but you can do it.
When you've been dating for a few months Suki takes you to her home     on Kyoshi Island. It's a pretty big deal considering this place has shaped    her whole life and everyone in the community idolises her but she’s     mindful of what happened with her sisters previously and makes sure you're not overwhelmed. She shows you the training halls and the beautiful beaches. Of course she also goes on for like an hour explaining everything Kyoshi ever touched and you just let her talk. "Sorry..." she     says realising she's been giving a lecture not a tour "am I boring you?". You couldn't resist how happy she looked talking about Kyoshi so you shook your head "not at all, tell me more about Kyoshi's girlfriend Rangi" and Suki beamed more than happy to.
Suki is one of those people who just designs the perfect birthday. She seems to be able to guess exactly what you want and act accordingly.     So one year she throws you a big party sensing you wanted to make it a big event. The next she senses you want this one to be a quieter one so the two of you stay in the house all day and don’t even open the blinds. She’s also amazing at buying presents and always gets you exactly what you want without fail. So much so, you’re sure she’s got someone to follow you or you must’ve said what you wanted in your sleep or something. Suki insists she’s just that good.
Despite Suki having a pretty self-defining career she never let that stop you from pursuing yours. You both agreed that nobody's career comes first and when you were offered a great training opportunity in the Water Tribe Suki encouraged you to take it. You'd be gone for  around a year and would only be able to visit every month or so but Suki told you to go for it. She was so supportive sending you weekly letters and gifts. As her boss was also her friend Zuko, he brought Suki with him every time he visited the Water Tribe and allowed her free time to be with you. Being in a long-distance relationship was hard but the two of you put in the work and get through it.
When the two of you fight it’s not very serious. It takes a lot to make Suki angry, especially because she knows you'd never mean to hurt her and intent matters a lot to her. However we're all human and of course there would be times when you upset her. She'd go quiet and thoughtful and when you ask her what's wrong she tells you. Suki believes in honest  communication and the two of you would always try and talk out whatever  was happening for as long as it takes. You try to never let arguments     fester and handle them as quickly as possible. Suki is nothing if not     efficient.
Working out with Suki would be...hilarious. We've all seen that scene in the Boiling Rock episode where she takes out all the guards, runs up a wall and is basically just amazing. That's her on her morning jog each day. Suki doesn't pull her punches so you realised very quickly working out together wasn't a couple’s activity for you. Instead you go to the park or gym with her and sit at a nearby cafe and wave to her as she does her laps. You read or draw or whatever you like to do and she exercises. Then when she's done you go home together.
Suki is very busy so she wouldn't have time for a high-maintenance pet. I can see her with a cat that the two of you adopted when you moved in together. Suki would be the responsible good parent while you're the     chaotic pushover. "Suki she's hungry, I think I should feed her"  you said as your cat stared up at you. "Y/n we fed her an hour ago, she's just being greedy" Suki replied. You sighed "fine..."  and sat back down. A few minutes later you left to go to the bathroom and made a bee-line for the kitchen...only to find Suki already there. "What? How did you get past me?" you cried and Suki smiled "through Avatar Kyoshi all things are possible...now go sit back down".
You wanted to name the cat Kyoshi but Suki vetos that and you name it Yun instead
Suki is an intuative cool partner. The type you can take to any event because she will get on with the people there and enjoy it. She’s a     delight to be around and at times it feels like she’s your everything. She’s the thing keeping you going each day and the two of you make a very happy partnership.
Sokka
Tumblr media
Sokka takes that typical macho approach to love. When he realises he     likes you, instead of small kind gestures or just telling you, he would     tease you constantly. He'd talk to you every chance he could get and would constantly be joking or messing around. Katara can read him like a book and would just sigh "when are you going to ask her out?". "Ask who out? Y/n! That's crazy! You're crazy Katara!" Sokka cried. Katara just smiled and shook her head.
Eventually though Sokka would realise imitating your accent or     laughing at your hairstyle (shockingly) wasn't the great flirting     endeavour he thought it was. So he'd ask you to do an activity together     and you'd say yes.
Sokka would have some pretty incorrect stereotypes about dating     which you'd have to help him unlearn. He'd been taught very traditional     things about what the role of a male and female should be in a     relationship and so might not understand what a more liberal view of that   is, but through trial and error (with a LOT of mistakes) he'd learn.
As a partner Sokka is pretty damn adorable. He'd notice every little thing about you and would bore all his friends by telling them things he found fascinating. "Do you know y/n can read things upside down? How cool is that?" he cried making Zuko and Aang frown."See that is pretty cool but maybe not relevant right now..." Zuko said glancing around at the assembled council as this was a council meeting. Sokka nodded "oh yeah got it! I'll tell you about it later". His friends would all sigh about how soppy he became anytime someone mentioned you but it was sweet really and they totally used it to their advantage...
Katara and Aang walked into the room and approached. “Hey Sokka how  are you?” Aang asked. “Fine, what do you need i’m really busy” Sokka     replied. “Oh nothing we’re just stopping by” Aang said and Sokka grunted  in response. “Hey so y/n’s arriving tomorrow isn’t she?” Katara asked.     Sokka immeidately changed. His body language relaxed and he smiled     widely “yeah, I can’t wait!”. “What time is she getting here?” Aang asked and Sokka began to tell them all the details. “That’s good...we were thinking of taking a trip next week. Would you be okay handling stuff on your own?”. “Sure no problem, also did I tell you what y/n said in her letter yesterday? She said the funniest thing...” and that was pretty much how they got Sokka to do anything.
You got him to reduce his meat intake just by telling him it’d be nice for the two of you to try something new together. Sokka the self-proclaimed     lover of meat gave that up because you asked him to.
Sokka's friends all liked you pretty instantly. Katara thought you were a saint for putting up with Sokka's dumb ideas and sense of humour.     Aang thought you and Sokka were very compatible and found it funny both Appa and Momo liked you more than Sokka. Toph was of course a little jealous given her crush on Sokka but even she had to admit there was nobody better matched for him than you. So she slowly got over her     jealousy. Zuko liked you because you always treated him like a friend and not like a Firelord. They all thought you helped Sokka be a better person    and made each other happy. What more could you ask for?
Suki ironically also really liked you. At first Sokka thought she'd be jealous and was wary of the two of you meeting. He even had a whole     elaborate scheme when it was Katara's birthday so you wouldn't meet. Then he saw the two of you chatting by the refreshments and nearly died. He gasped and ran to help you "I think you should go see Katara" he     said to you forcefully trying to pull you away. "Why?" you asked pushing his hand off you "Suki and I are getting acquainted". Suki nodded "yeah we're having lots of fun discussing all the silly stuff you say". "Wait you know who each other are?" Sokka asked and you both laughed. "Duh!" Suki smiled "I'm a trained warrior, I can pick up on things". You nodded "and she's literally wearing her captain's uniform...so that made it pretty     easy". Sokka blinked "and you're...okay with one another?". "Why wouldn't we be?" Suki asked and you nodded "just because Suki's your ex doesn't mean we have to hate each other". "Yeah we're above all that sexist crap" Suki said and Sokka nodded "okay then...carry on" and left you to it. The idea of even being near your ex made Sokka furious so he found this very odd but you and Suki became good friends which was nice. He realised he didn't have to banish Suki just because they'd broken up and that this was a really healthy relationship.
Sokka is protective so if anyone and I mean anyone dares to say a bad thing about you, he’s ready to fistfight. There are 2 problems with this however
1. he doesn't take into account how badly he could lose a fight. For example when he said your name one day and Appa happened to be passing gas at the same time he took offence. He began yelling at the sky bison and then jumped on Appa, messing up his fur. Appa simply swatted Sokka away and put his paw on him, keeping him rooted to the floor.
2. Sokka's second problem was he tended to imagine insults where     there were none. Once they were at Kyoshi Island and Aang wanted to go Elephant-Koi fish surfing but the fish weren't there. After waiting an hour Katara suggested calling it quits and Aang sighed "let's just go and meet y/n in Omashu". Sokka didn't like Aang's tone and immediately bristled. "Oh I'm sorry is it such a chore to see y/n? Do you not enjoy visiting her? Has she not always been an amazing friend to you?" he cried. "Of course not I love seeing y/n! She’s a great friend to me!". "So why did you say her name like that?" Sokka asked and Katara sighed "Sokka you know Aang didn't mean it like that, leave him alone!". "I will not stand by while someone insults my partner!" he cried and Katara rolled her eyes "Aang     wasn't doing that!". "I promise I wasn't!" Aang said and Sokka paused "you weren't?". "No I love y/n!" Aang said. Sokka narrowed his eyes inspecting him before he sighed "okay my bad" and moved on, leaving a very relieved Airbender and angry waterbender.
When Sokka realised he loves you he'd plan a whole evening to tell you and of course because fate does not favour Sokka everything would go     wrong and he'd get really upset.
"Sokka...are you okay?" you asked he continued to angrily beat the curtains which had stopped being on fire quite a few seconds ago. "Yep I'm fine!" he said but you could tell by how high his voice was going that he wasn't. "No you're not Sokka stop!" and you pulled him away from the curtains "I know our date got messed up when it rained and we had to come inside...and when our food got burned accidentally...and when the curtains then caught fire destroying all the beautiful decorations you put out...but that's no reason to get upset". Sokka sighed "but I wanted tonight to be special!". "Why?" you asked chuckling and Sokka slumped into his seat hanging his head "because I wanted to tell you that I...that I love you". You paused "you did?". Sokka nodded "yeah and I wanted it to be a real special occasion we'd both remember for years but I messed everything up!". Sokka you didn't mess anything up!" you said taking a seat next to him "I will remember this night forever and not because of all the fancy things or decorations but because of you...you saying those words are more than enough to make this memorable". Sokka looked at you "really?". "Really" you smiled.
Sokka LOVES compliments and he’s not humble either. He will happily     accept them and agree with you which makes it rather funny. “Sokka     that was so cool!” you cried when he successfully disarmed Zuko in     combat. “I know” he smirked. “Don’t encourage him y/n” Katara     whispered but you just smiled. You knew Sokka just wanted to feel loved  and that’s why he enjoyed compliments so much. However you didn’t want him to get a big ego so you treated compliments with Sokka how a person might handle treats with a dog. Only on certain occasions when it was warranted and that worked pretty well.
Sokka might be nervous to introduce you to his family at first because he cares a lot about what his tribe thinks of him and doesn't want them to be disappointed he's dating an "outsider". This would be a really big test for you and Sokka because he has to decide what's more important, tradition or you. At first he'd try and keep the two separate however that can't continue forever and eventually he brings you to the WaterTribe. He's hyperaware of everything as you walk to his home together. "Is it just me or are people watching us?" he asked and Katara frowned "nobodies watching us and even if they are they're probably just intrigued about y/n". Sokka nodded but that didn't reassure him.
Then around his family he got nervous all over again. He was a ball of nerves as you chatted to his father and gran gran. "So y/n what do your parents do?" his gran gran asked. "My mother is a mechanic and my father is a stay-at-home dad". Sokka anxiously watched his elders and saw them pause "so your father stays at home and your mother works?" Hakoda asked. You nodded "yep! In my home couples choose who should stay home and my father wanted to. "That's so cool"  Katara said and you smiled. "It's certainly...different" gran gran said and Sokka nearly choked. "Yes in the best possible way" Hakoda smiled "we're trying to improve the gender equality in our tribe and your home sounds like a wonderful place for us to learn from, please tell us more". Sokka dropped his fork in shock. "Sokka table manners!" gran gran said before turning to you "now dear tell me, how many of your girls are educated". Sokka couldn't believe it. He'd assumed his tribe would hate your ideals but they were more progressive than he thought. After that, he brought you home with him any time he could and even flew his father and gran gran to your home so they could see it all. Your families got along wonderfully and Sokka never underestimated his tribe again.
Sokka also LOVES birthdays but not just his own he adores your own     too. Sokka is a big kid at heart and so he gets more excited for your     birthday than you do. He wakes up extra early and tries his best to make     you, your favourite breakfast in bed. Then he drags you to the living room so you can open your presents. He watches you excitedly while you unwrap them, so thrilled to see what you think of them. He prefers for you to spend your birthday just the two of you and gets jealous when your other friends and family want to see you too. He adores you and so having a whole day where he just gets to celebrate you is amazing in his eyes.
Sokka wants to make it super clear your career is just as important  as his. Growing up that wasn't the typical attitude between males and     females but he wanted it to be. When he was offered a high-ranking role in the Water Tribe he asked for time to discuss it with you and considered  your job. He never assumed to know what you were thinking and listened to you. He put off accepting the job for several years so you could finish     studying and then you made the joint decision to move there. He even     looked into all the careers you could have in the Water Tribe and only     agreed to move once you had one you were really passionate about. Just  liking the sound of it wasn't enough he wanted you to really want to move  and wouldn't accept anything less.
Fights with Sokka are hilarious. He might be one of the brightest minds in the four nations but he also had an immature side and that comes out when you argue. His logic went right out the window and you'd verbally destroy him. This would make Sokka very mardy and pouty which you     found adorable. He’d sulk for a little while but after half an hour or so he wouldn’t care anymore and would be back to normal.
You quite enjoyed working out with Sokka because he was a big fan of     rewarding yourselves for good behaviour. So you would hardly do any work and then take a nice break. It was basically just an opportunity for you and Sokka to spend some time together while possibly doing a little bit of exercise. Sokka is also totally that partner that likes to set up on the machine next to you. You don’t go around attached at the hip but if he sees you on one treadmill he will come and take the one next to you because he likes being close to you. Sokka would also be a huge hype     man and so you love getting him to spot you when you do weights. He cheers you on constantly and makes exercising easier in every way.
Sokka would claim to hate animals because of all the mess, smell and noise etc but he would adore the pet you got together. He'd of course     complain the whole time you were buying the pet but he'd slowly start to     melt. You'd catch him covering up the little animal with a blanket at     night or waking up early so he can feed and play with it. He'd even take     it with him on his rounds as councillor and soon they're inseparable.     "Do you remember when I said I wanted a pet and we got one for me?". Sokka looked down where your pet was curled up against him asleep "yeah well they chose me, don't be a sore loser y/n".
Sokka is a fun, unique and witty partner. There’s never a quiet moment when he’s around and nobody can make you laugh or smile like he can. He’s not only hilarious but can be serious and sweet in ways that  send shivers down your spine. You have no doubt he’d go to the end of the     earth for you and no matter your differences, you’re perfect together.

So obviously I didn’t include Toph and Aang because they’re both 12 but I really loved writing this for Katara, Zuko, Suki and Sokka! They’re all so fun but have such different personalities.

Raleigh’s LIE HEAVY Bring Heavy Rock Vets Together for New Music Video
~Doomed & Stoned Debuts~
By Billy Goate
Tumblr media
LIE HEAVY burst on the scene last year, self-releasing their debut full-length, but the album did the rounds quickly and landed on the Doom Charts radar. In July, they debuted in the top 40 with 'Burn To The Moon' (2023) and have only conquered more ear-drums since that time.
Veteran musicians are drawn from The Skull, Confessor, and Legions of Doom, and believe me they bring everything to the table: sweet southern stoner riffs (Graham Fry on guitar), a stout rhythm section (Jeff JD Dennis on drums, TR Gwynne on bass), and singing that really gets your attention (Karl Agell on vox).
Tumblr media
Vocals really distinguish the band's titular song, both the verses and the chorus, as to be expected from the former singer for Corrosion of Conformity ('89-'93), who's since also fronted Blind, Leadfoot, King Hitter, and Legions of Doom, among others. There's a commanding expressiveness to the lyrics that just makes you a believer. Take one look at the crazed stare in Karl Agell's eyes and you'll get a sense that this guy is in this heavy rock thing lock, stock, and smoking barrels.
This song has it all, and a positive message to boot ("Your heart can heal your mind, your mind can heal your heart"). There's also some wicked, soulful soloing towards the end, not to be missed.
Today, Doomed & Stoned brings you the world premiere of the music video for "Lie Heavy," where the band balances their heaviness with plenty of self-effacing humor.
Look for Lie Heavy's Burn To The Moon, releasing via Heavy Psych Sounds on three varieties of vinyl, compact disc, and digital format on April 19th (pre-order here).
Give ear...

SOME BUZZ
Raleigh, North Carolina's Lie Heavy is one of the few, true throwbacks to another era. They feature the vocals of Karl Agell, best known for Corrosion of Conformity's BLiND album and Leadfoot. Heavy, heavy-ass blues that would have fit on the Man's Ruin label back in the 90s, around the time that Orange Goblin was making waves. This is primal stuff: not quite Stoner, not quite Metal, and not quite giving a shit.
LIE HEAVY - Burn To The Moon by HEAVY PSYCH SOUNDS Records
Lie Heavy draws on the original hard 'n groovy jams of Sabbath, Mountain, Lizzy and Purple, fused with their own massive experience. So, it is not difficult to fathom why Lie Heavy sounds like a well-oiled, hard working band of 30 years rather than a new entity. Their pedigree does not belie their power. Collectively, they have spent tens of thousands of hours in practice spaces, studios and on stages around the world, honing their vast skills, to find one another in this moment being among the top guardian practitioners at the gates of transcendently heavy music.

Meet the swordsoul
The swordsoul are all named after famous swords from ancient China. The blades, they use, are made up of the husks of an icejade's body after the icejade dies. The technique on how they make these blades are very important to them. The icejade must have a strong bond with the swordsoul the bond could be of the following: Romantic, Platonic like family or Very Close Friend. They also need to wait for a new icejade to be born out of the body. Then the swordsoul must make the blade by hand. They also need to put a soul inside of them the amount could be a piece of their own or someone who has a relationship with the icejade. The blades can only be used if the icejade that was used to make it had a trust with them. The blades glow with the soul of the thing inside that blade. The soul contained grants the element.
Meet the ruler of the swordsoul-Supreme Sovereign Changying
Tumblr media
Changying is a very mysterious individual who prefers to be himself. He also meets foreigners and meets them so that He can guess of their intentions. He can sense whether they are good or bad intentions if bad he fights them and kills them. He was also Kosmochlor's Lover. The blade was made out of Kosmochlor. He is Mo Ye and Agel's father. Before his love, he was a very intimidating, blood thirsty and impatient individual. Now a days, he is a very patient and self restrainted individual still intimidating though.
Tumblr media
Meet Chixiao or the grandmaster. His blade was made out of The twins mother. He is a very proud man. He pride's himself with his power. He is somewhat of an overprotective dad.
Tumblr media
Meet taia, he is trained to be the next grandmaster. He is a very intelligent man and was once a criminal in his past. He is the father of Acti. He is a dad trying to be a good dad to her but sometimes embarrasses her on accident. When on the battle field or protecting someone, he changes to be a stone cold killer to his foes.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meet Mo Ye. (the second Pic is the concept art or reference art)
Mo ye is the youngest out of them. Her birth was very special. She was born genetically exactly like her father. The reason why is cause when an icejade empress gives birth to the child. The baby will always be genetically exactly like the father. The ability to give birth is exclusive to the royals. When she was born she came out as an adult with the blade. The baby can only be made out of genuine love.

I’ve been playing Clangen a lot lately, so here is some lazy sketches of my very edgy Ruinclan
So I won’t explain the Clanmates because I plan to draw them at least seminormal, but I will explain how clan was formed, the first leaders death (the second thingy) and clan founder
!Warning! This will have small desription of deаths of cats and about a plаgue so
This is propably very cringey and not accurate. I haven’t been in this fandom for around ten years or so. Also english is not my first language, sorry for all of the mistakes
So Ruinclan has started as a rescue mission of sort. Cats were running from the great plague that killed almost everyone in their previous clan. So small group of survived cats was sent away to start a new clan. Thats were clan founder comes in. Alderfern (she-cat) decided to show up as a ghost and show them a place were her clan died as a new place for their clan. Cats thought that she was joking when she said that her whole clan died because of a curse. This was propably not a joke (most of my cats died just been one moon in clan). Cats decided to call themself a Ruinclan because they started at the ruins (ye very smart me)
So the first leader was Tulipstar (tom). He was very wise and got buried alive by colapsing burrow at 154 moons of age on the second moon of the clan. Alderfern wasn’t very impressed.
Also addressing the eye in the middle of the leaders cats head. I know that there were no such thing in Warrior cats, but I mean, there are cats that are getting 9 lives and technically become immortal(ageles???) in this books(or at least in the game, I can’t quite remember the books), so why not an eye in the middle of the head to show that

Dozens of newly discovered gravitational lenses could reveal ancient galaxies and the nature of dark matter Earlier this year a machine learning algorithm identified up to 5,000 potential gravitational lenses that could transform our ability to chart the evolution of galaxies since the Big Bang. Now astronomer Kim-Vy Tran from ASTRO 3D and UNSW Sydney and colleagues have assessed 77 of the lenses using the Keck Observatory in Hawai’i and Very Large Telescope in Chile. She and her international team confirmed that 68 out of the 77 are strong gravitational lenses spanning vast cosmic distances. This success rate of 88 per cent suggests that the algorithm is reliable and that we could have thousands of new gravitational lenses. To date, gravitational lenses have been hard to find and only about a hundred are routinely used. Kim-Vy Tran’s paper published today in the Astronomical Journal presents spectroscopic confirmation of strong gravitational lenses previously identified using Convolutional Neural Networks, developed by data scientist Dr Colin Jacobs at ASTRO 3D and Swinburne University. The work is part of the ASTRO 3D Galaxy Evolution with Lenses (AGEL) survey. “Our spectroscopy allowed us to map a 3D picture of the gravitational lenses to show they are genuine and not merely chance superposition,” says corresponding author Dr. Tran from the ARC Centre of Excellence for All Sky Astrophysics in 3-Dimensions (ASTRO3D) and the University of NSW (UNSW). “Our goal with AGEL is to spectroscopically confirm around 100 strong gravitational lenses that can be observed from both the Northern and Southern hemispheres throughout the year,” she says. The paper is the result of a collaboration spanning the globe with researchers from Australia, the United States, the United Kingdom, and Chile. The work was made possible by the development of the algorithm to look for certain digital signatures. “With that we could identify many thousands of lenses compared to just a few handfuls,” says Dr. Tran. Gravitational lensing was first identified as a phenomenon by Einstein who predicted that light bends around massive objects in space in the same way that light bends going through a lens. In doing so, it greatly magnifies images of galaxies that we would not otherwise be able to see. While it has been used by astronomers to observe far away galaxies for a long time, finding these cosmic magnifying glasses in the first place has been hit and miss. “These lenses are very small so if you have fuzzy images, you're not going to really be able to detect them,” says Dr. Tran. While these lenses let us see objects that are millions of light years away more clearly, it should also let us ‘see’ invisible dark matter that makes up most of the Universe. “We know that most of the mass is dark,” says Dr. Tran. “We know that mass is bending light and so if we can measure how much light is bent, we can then infer how much mass must be there.” Having many more gravitational lenses at various distances will also give us a more complete image of the timeline going back almost to the Big Bang. “The more magnifying glasses you have, the better chance you can try to survey these more distant objects. Hopefully, we can better measure the demographics of very young galaxies,” says Dr. Tran. “Then somewhere between those really early first galaxies and us there's a whole lot of evolution that's happening, with tiny star forming regions that convert pristine gas into the first stars to the sun, the Milky Way. “And so with these lenses at different distances, we can look at different points in the cosmic timeline to track essentially how things change over time, between the very first galaxies and now.” Dr Tran’s team spanned the globe, with each group providing different expertise. “Being able to collaborate with people, at different universities, has been so crucial, both for setting the project up in the first place, and now continuing with all of the follow-up observations,” she says. Professor Stuart Wyithe of the University of Melbourne and Director of the ARC Centre of Excellence for All Sky Astrophysics in 3 Dimensions (Astro 3D) says each gravitational lens is unique and tells us something new. “Apart from being beautiful objects, gravitational lenses provide a window to studying how mass is distributed in very distant galaxies that are not observable via other techniques. By introducing ways to use these new large data sets of the sky to search for many new gravitational lenses, the team opens up the opportunity to see how galaxies get their mass,” he says. Professor Karl Glazebrook of Swinburne University, and Dr Tran’s Co-Science Lead on the paper, paid tribute to the work that had gone before. “This algorithm was pioneered by Dr Colin Jacobs at Swinburne. He sifted through tens of millions of galaxy images to prune the sample down to 5,000. Never did we dream that the success rate would be so high,” he says. “Now we are getting images of these lenses with the Hubble Space Telescope, they range from jaw-droopingly beautiful to extremely strange images that will take us considerable effort to figure out.” Associate Professor Tucker Jones of UC Davis, another co-science lead on the paper, described the new sample as “a giant step forward in learning how galaxies form over the history of the Universe”. “Normally these early galaxies look like small fuzzy blobs, but the lensing magnification allows us to see their structure with much better resolution. They are ideal targets for our most powerful telescopes to give us the best possible view of the early universe,” he says. “Thanks to the lensing effect we can learn what these primitive galaxies look like, what they are made of, and how they interact with their surroundings.” The study was conducted in collaboration with researchers from the University of New South Wales, Swinburne University of Technology, Australian National University, Curtin University, and the University of Queensland in Australia, the University of California, Davis, in the US, the University of Portsmouth, in the UK, and University of Chile. The ARC Centre of Excellence for All Sky Astrophysics in 3 Dimensions (ASTRO 3D) is a $40m Research Centre of Excellence funded by the Australian Research Council (ARC) and six collaborating Australian universities - The Australian National University, The University of Sydney, The University of Melbourne, Swinburne University of Technology, The University of Western Australia, and Curtin University. Those Warm and Halcyon Days: Chapter 79
Area 4: Beyul
Ao3.
First, Previous, Next.
Story under read-more.
In an effort to make the march to Beyul feel a bit less like a funeral procession (Veery is not convinced anyone has actually told the refugees that they’re going to be released into the hands of their fellow Agarthans, provided things go well) Veery decides to, for the first time, take initiative with the ridiculous reputation he has and do something with it.
So, he approaches the Agarthan refugees, hoping that talking calmly with them will set them at ease, but also that seeing the patchwork god (Holst has been spreading it, and the cult is starting to adopt it, too, with a lot of speculation on what “patchwork” really means.) reaching out will help the Fódlanders involved on the march relax a little.
It’s essentially the reason he comes to Fódlan to begin with. This tension between the two peoples will lead to war and death if nothing is done about it, and regardless of his actual capability to do anything about it, his are the only actions in his control and no one else is doing anything, so… he may as well do something.
After a few false starts, including some people who do believe he’s a new god but who unfortunately believe he’s a god determined to finally eradicate their people, Veery ends up spending a large part of the march chatting with a greying, heavyset man who claims to be nothing more than a cook. And who is positively offended that Veery has so few opinions on food beyond “edible is good”.
He’s very enthusiastic, and does most of the talking, and Veery frankly wants to walk away but the man does get into some details on how he acquires his ingredients which is interesting. Veery’s plan to ease some of the tension in the air seems to work as well, as despite the numerous eyes watching curiously, cautiously, or both, things do relax somewhat.
Veery is still happy to slip away when they finally approach the gates of Beyul.
Between Asura’s description, the history book, and a few of the refugees’ chiming in (and a few others attempting to shush them), they still only manage to find the narrow, hidden entrance tucked away on a relatively gentle mountain trail by Veery picking up on and following the sound of moving water.
Slipping through the opening in the wall, Veery finds himself gawking up at a massive statue of a great beast standing in front of a small cave opening and on top of a pool of water which seems to originate here and flows into the mountain. He gasps out, “A mammoth?”
“An elephant?” Claude wonders at the same time.
The two of them eye each other quizzically, then glance to the rest of their party who, by and large, look at the massive statue with none of the recognition that Veery and Claude have, only confusion and a healthy dose of fear.
“What in the world is an elephant?” Veery asks.
Claude shakes his head. “That,” he says, pointing at the statue. “They’re native to southern Almyra, though I heard they’re spreading in Dagda after the Dadgans took some home.”
“Oh.” Veery looks back at the statue.
“What in the world is a mammoth?”
“That,” Veery says, likewise pointing to the statue. On closer inspection, he frowns. “But mammoths are really hairy, so maybe that’s an elephant, then.” He assumes the hair is just difficult to carve into the stone. It’s not a particularly detailed mammoth. Elephant. Whatever.
“Oh. Why didn’t I learn about those when I was researching Albinea?”
“They’re pretty rare. Usually, you only find them deep in the snow wastes, where humans can’t get to even if they wanted to. I think Caub mentioned something about restricted trading? Same reason you don’t get agell fur down here; they don’t like to sell much more than the ivory to anyone outside Albinea.  Even that’s too useful to not use ourselves.”
The Agarthan cook still next to Veery eyes the elephant statue, then Veery, then asks, “Have you ever eaten mammoth?”
Veery curls his lip, turning his disbelief towards the man. “Do you really think I’m stupid enough to hunt one of those things on my own? They’re herd animals. And even if you can get one on its own, it would still take a whole pride to actually kill it.”
“Really?” Claude asks. “Not once?”
“I’ve stumbled across a body or two in the snow wastes, but you all apparently think raw, frozen meat doesn’t count as good food.”
The cook is definitely offended, though Claude nods sagely. “You’ve got a point.”
Veery still isn’t convinced they’re telling him the truth when they say they can’t eat raw meat. But even he can admit that cooked usually tastes better. Insomuch as taste matters at all when it’s food in their stomachs.
“If you all are done,” Lysithea huffs (with no small amount of fondness), “can we get going, now?”
“Ha! Right,” Claude says. “Sorry. I just didn’t expect to see an elephant here of all places. Let’s get going.”
Veery has just enough time to hear Dorothea murmur to an equally impressed Leonie, “Creatures like that exist?” before he’s following Claude and the stream under the elephant’s feet into the cave.
They walk deep into the mountain, but it doesn’t take too long. They go far enough that the humans start muttering about the dark and the mages begin conjuring lights, but not far enough that Veery has any complaints about his vision.
But it’s only there, nested in the cave, where they find large metal gates.
Unlike those of Shambhala, which were draconian and military, the gates of Beyul are ornamental to the point of ostentatious. Every inch of the metal face is carved or molded into a complicated mural that towers over them all, easily matching the size of the doors to Rhea’s hall in Garreg Mach.
(Oh. Veery realizes just now that the size of those doors is probably for dragons, not humans. That makes sense, now.)
Veery and the others gather there in front of the doors, either examining the mural or considering how best to open it, when mechanical buzzing rings out and the doors open entirely on their own.
Tension rises, they prepare for whatever is on the other side to attack, then an old, tremulous voice cuts through. “So, the fell star and the winter sun grace the exalted halls of Beyul,” it says. “We greet you both, and your allies, with tidings of peace.”
Veery knows that “fell star” refers to Sothis, and it’s no surprise that Beyul knows about her and Byleth (though there is some surprise at the obeisance paid to her), but it isn’t until Veery sees the old man in flowing robes looking directly at him that he realizes he’s picked up another epithet.
The winter sun. Veery snorts openly when he realizes that it’s him that refers to. That is the politest way of calling him a fake that he’s heard. The church loyalists who still deny his divinity usually just call him heretic, but to name him after something that isn’t there, or only barely appears, is actually quite funny.
Strange as it may be, Veery thoroughly approves. It’s passive-aggressive, meant to insult, but it’s clever and Veery doesn’t think of himself as a god, anyway, no matter how he’s accepted that others do. He almost wishes he’d come up with it himself and told Holst to use it before spreading around his patchwork title. Since the sun doesn’t disappear for winter down here in Fódlan, most of the cult probably wouldn’t even realize what it implies.
In fact, no one at all except for Sadi and Hoarvug, after Veery openly expresses his humor at the title, seem to have any idea why. And though Sadi and Hoarvug clearly don’t find it funny in itself, they both roll their eyes at Veery’s reaction.
After a moment, it clicks into place for Claude, too, but instead of finding humor in it, he scowls, tensing for conflict, and asks, “Winter sun?”
The lone old man who greets them bows. “The fire of winter,” he explains, “named partly for his feats of ice magic and signature flames, as well as the more symbolic warmth in the midst of the greatest cold for his healing prowess.”
Oh. Oh, that’s so much worse. And here Veery was giving them credit for being clever.
The old man eyes Veery’s disappointment and Claude’s subtle relaxing for a moment, then has his own realization. “Ah, you were thinking of the polar night? My apologies for any disrespect. We clearly have failed to consider where the young god hails from.” He turns to Veery and bows deeply. “We beg your forgiveness for our oversight.”
Veery just shrugs. “I thought it was funny,” he says, knowing he shouldn’t fully admit that he prefers if it were insulting.
The old man clearly takes this as forgiveness for the unintended slight and rises once more. “Generous indeed. I should introduce myself. My name is Cadros. I am the current high priest of the silent dragon Anankos and have been asked to receive you guests to Beyul.”
“Been asked by who?” Claude asks. “We admittedly have very little information on Beyul, and I’d like to know who I’m going to need to be dealing with.”
Cadros smiles indulgently. He turns and speaks only as they walk. “Beyul is ruled by a council of religious leaders. As high priest of the silent dragon, I am among that council, but I am not the sole leader of our city.”
“I see. And how would you like to begin?”
“I see that you’ve brought the rest of the survivors of Shambhala with you,” Cadros says, smiling to the refugees behind them. “I assume, since you’ve brought them to our very first meeting, you’re willing to part with them?”
“Ideally,” Claude says stoically. “Fódlan is still at war and Shambhala is too close to the border with Adrestia. And I know Edelgard is no friend of Agartha. We can certainly give them refuge ourselves if necessary, but as a temporary measure, Beyul is the safest place for them.”
Cadros nods slowly.
Claude continues. “I don’t know how much you’ve heard about the state of Shambhala itself…”
“Little,” Cadros answers. “We’ve taken in a few survivors already, but they escaped during Thales’ attempt to collapse the city and do not know how much has survived.”
Oh, so Asura’s group does make it here. That’s good to know. Claude hums and says, “Most of the city’s infrastructure survived thanks to Veery and Marianne taking care of those javelins of light. Although, we don’t have the experience with your technology to examine much more than that. The center of the city, where Thales was holed up, is damaged from the cave-in, and we haven’t had time to determine if the rest of the cave is still sound, not to mention the exit path is also caved-in, so we evacuated the people that remained, pending investigation and clean-up to determine whether it’s safe for them to return to their homes.”
“All of which cannot be done until your war is over,” Cadros says sagely, stroking his beard. “You have already risked a great detour by focusing on Shambhala before Adrestia, and Shambhala lies close to the Adrestian border – if these people returned there to repair their home, there is a good chance that Emperor Edelgard will try to finish the job, even if you won’t.”
“We’d like to prevent that,” Claude says. “We, at least, realize that not all people are the same. Thales’ Koterija is our enemy, not Agartha as a whole, and certainly not Beyul, who we don’t have any evidence has taken part in any of Thales’ crimes.”
“Then you have proven yourself more reasonable than past generations. Of both our peoples.” Cadros frowns in thought for a moment, then says, “We will take the refugees off your hands. We also beg that, when the war is over, it will be safe for us to investigate what is left of Shambhala.”
“Naturally,” Claude says. “You understand we’ll have to provide an escort as you pass through Leicester.”
“I would expect no less,” Cadros says. “I hope that this meeting marks an era of openness and honesty between our peoples. That means we will both naturally need to respect each other’s boundaries and borders.”
They come upon another door which, when opened leads to a vast, light space. Veery blinks, trying to adjust his eyes to what he at first believes is daylight.
Abyss is dark by necessity. They don’t have the technology to make sustainable lights and torches are both dim and limited. If they want to keep having light at all, they need to ration their torches to match how quickly they can supply more from the surface.
Shambhala, however, has these strange, cold lights that can only be magic, or some magic-technology mix. Yet still the city is dim, like it’s permanently nighttime.
Beyul, however, is as bright as the midday sun. Massive blocks of light which hurt to look at almost as much as the sun hang suspended, dotted above the city. Deep shadows do find themselves to the distant cavern walls, but most of the whole open space is shockingly well lit.
Veery can see the same Agarthan script which lines the walls of Shambhala decorating the walls here, as well, but unlike the more draconian, military design of Shambhala, the walls of Beyul are alive with art.
Veery even hears Ignatz suck in an excited little gasp when he sees it.
Murals and decorations in all mediums appear as they walk through Beyul. Statues sit proudly in the middle of the streets, colorful banners like Veery has only ever seen in Derdriu hang across them from the buildings, paint and vibrant stone line the walls. The skill these artisans have is impressive, but Veery is just taken by the color. (Color like this is part of why Veery comes to Fódlan in the first place.)
He wants to explore.
Of course, despite the scents saturating Beyul, they don’t see a single soul as Cadros leads them into the streets. Clearly, they’re prepared. And cautious. As they should be. But that does mean Veery shouldn’t wander off.
They eventually enter a large building and are greeted inside by a large collection of people, most dressed in fancy, ornamented robes.
Just as he’s wondering who all these people are, one of the fancy ones and one with decidedly more plain robes separates themselves from the group to approach Professor Byleth and Veery together.
“Divine god,” the pain-clothed one says, bowing low, “exalted vessel, we greet you and welcome you to Beyul. I am Serin, priest of the winter sun.” Priest for Veery? Yikes. Veery meets cultists devoted to him all the time now, but someone calling themselves a priest… Gross. “I understand that you may wish to stay for the discussions to come, but if I might ask for a moment of your time before you depart, we would be honored to have our god visit our temple.”
The other man in fancier robes makes the same offer to Byleth.
Veery suppresses a weary sigh. When he says he wants to explore, this is not what he means.
“Go on, Kitty,” Hapi says. “Claudester and the rest of us will handle things here. You should go take a look around.”
Seriously? Granted, Veery has no interest in the details of whatever agreement they’re going to be negotiating for the next few hours, but he doesn’t consider visiting a temple dedicated to him to be an improvement.
“You too, Teach,” Lysithea says, with a look in her eye that gives Veery enough pause to think that there’s another reason they want someone outside the meeting room. “This is going to be mostly the boring part, anyway. You have time to visit the faithful.”
Surely, they can’t think that sending two high-profile targets to be alone with the Agarthans is a good idea. Veery might be on the side of giving an alliance with these people a chance, but trusting them like that? It’s laughable.
Do they think that they’re in danger, and they need someone outside to break them out if necessary? But the Agarthans approach them with the offer, so it would just be part of the Agarthan plot if so, so there’s no way that will work.
Or… are they on an information gathering job? That… does make sense. Byleth and Veery will have the chance to see more of the city and meet more of the people, which may yet be important for such a new relationship.
If that’s the case, Veery has very little room to refuse, does he? Still, he asks Serin, “You won’t be needed for the talks here?”
Serin shakes his head. “As we follow you, if you say that Mister Claude speaks with your authority, then he also speaks for us. My presence will be superfluous.”
Huh. Well, that’s stupid. Even Veery doesn’t so eagerly cast aside his voice in matters like these, always at least showing up to listen to war meetings. But if that’s his choice…
Veery is still unsure about it all, but he nonetheless agrees to follow Serin out of the building. Sadi and Hoarvug naturally stick to his side, as does, strangely, one of the random Knights of Seiros with their delegation, while several more knights accompany Byleth, who, along with her own priest, walk together with Veery for a while before eventually splitting at a corner.
It takes Veery an embarrassingly long time, until well after Professor Byleth’s group parts from them, to realize the knight tagging along with him is that Antony Garnel character who lost his marbles and decided to worship Veery after Veery healed him from a typical battlefield magic burn five years ago.
It’s not that long ago that he tells Veery his life story, or whatever, back on the road between Arianrhod and Daint Mach Monastery where Mercedes harbored Emile before they all returned to Garreg Mach, but Veery honestly doesn’t remember much more than that.
(He just really doesn’t care.)
Beyul, however, he does care about, if only because it’s a beautiful place. He’s sure that with more people milling about the streets he’ll have a different opinion, but the color and art all around him just makes him smile.
The temple that Serin leads him to is much less decorated, though that looks to be at least in part due to it being new. A few of the temples they pass are similarly bare of decoration but look much more worn. Here, however, everything is shiny and fresh.
It’s weird. Veery doesn’t like that newly constructed look at all. Then again, he doesn’t like human architecture as a whole, so that’s perhaps not surprising. He does find it within himself to question the difference, though, and turns to Serin. “Why is this building left so plain? I see murals on almost every wall here, but this one and some of those other temples are blank.”
“To decorate the walls of a temple,” Serin says, “the god the temple is dedicated to must approve.” Which, despite the fact that Veery is so far the only actually living god to voice an opinion on the matter, is fair enough reasoning. “As such, it is much more difficult for artists to gain the necessary permits to do so. Most temple murals are commissions requested by the high priests themselves – few others manage the honor.”
Veery hums.
“How do you feel about decorating your temple in such a way?”
Oh, boy. Veery sighs. “Beyul is a beautiful city,” he says. “I like the color. But I won’t tell you how to make your temple.”
Serin visibly hesitates. “…I see. In truth we, that is, all of us priests at this temple, were hoping that you might be willing to meet with the proper candidates and appoint an official high priest. As well as offer insight into how we can best please you that we are… regretfully unable to obtain due to our isolation.”
Veery curls his lip, blinking dumbly. That… is the worst thing he has ever heard.
It’s Antony who speaks up in Veery’s disgusted silence. “Might I ask, this being such a new religion, are you struggling to gain the respect of your peers? Is that why you need a high priest?”
Serin inclines his head slowly. “Yes and no,” he says. “We do not lack for the respect of the other religions. Merely following a living god in the first place elevates us and overcomes any bias for our inexperience. We are not lesser than the other religions. At least not to any below Beyul’s two favored ones. That said, as we cannot appoint a high priest, we do lack for power in certain affairs. Only our god’s appointment of one for us, or another proxy dictated by terms set by our god, can fulfill that position in our government.”
“Ah,” Antony says, “so simply by answering a few questions, the patchwork god can elevate your religion’s position within Beyul.”
“Just so.” Serin nods. “But do not mistake, we do not ask solely for the purpose of gaining influence. As faithful to our god, we wish to know how best to worship. That is more important, and if he so chooses to ignore those aspects which will empower us, we will still be satisfied with whatever guidance he is willing to give.”
Veery only just resists scoffing. Like he believes that for a second. So, it’s all a power play. Good on Antony for figuring that out so quickly.
“Divine god, if I may…?” Serin presses. “Would you be willing?”
Veery gives in and finally rolls his eyes. “It is the utmost foolishness to believe one can speak for another,” he says. “Feelings can only truly be understood by the one feeling them. To claim to speak for the dead, who have no feelings or thoughts to share, god or no, is even more ridiculous.”
Serin gawks, jaw agape, floundering for words.
Hoarvug snorts. “What you must understand about my Veery,” Hoarvug says, “is that he is not a leader because he chooses to guide. He is a leader because he has those who choose to follow him. We choose to follow him because he spoils us so.”
Sadi shakes her head, smirking. “Spoiling us, he means to say, in that Veery does not dictate. He has no interest in controlling the lives of others, especially if he is asked to. One of the many reasons we follow him is precisely that he refuses to impose upon our agency.”
“Yes,” Antony says, “we of the cult on the surface were similarly baffled for a time. Especially after coming from the Church of Seiros and its doctrine. But we learned quickly, and I hope we are correct in this assessment, that the patchwork god values freedom and agency beyond most things. He would never appoint one man to speak for him or guide others in his name because he would never purposefully steer the course of another’s fate. You will find no guidance in begging for it, only in watching and finding meaning in what you see. You must find your path for yourself; it will not be shown to you.”
Serin frowns, thinking deeply on what he’s told. After a long moment, he mutters, “Symposium.” Louder, more confident, he says, “No high priest, because as per our god’s beliefs, no official leader makes sense. So instead, a symposium of ideas. All priests will be encouraged to bring their thoughts to improve the temple and the city forward, and we can act upon well-reasoned and well-planned ideas. Our seat in the government can be taken by an elected representative of the symposium itself. If our god approves?”
“I have no need or desire to be worshipped,” Veery says. “I certainly won’t tell you how to do so. If you want to gather together, that is your business, not mine.”
“I believe that’s a yes,” Antony says, chuckling lightly. “Or rather, it’s approval to arrange your temple as you priests see fit. As I said, you must find your path for yourself. He does not tend to look favorably upon those who beg for guidance.”
“I… I see,” Serin says, unsure.
“Fret not, friend,” Antony says. “We also had the same fears. When I say he does not like those who beg for guidance, I mean merely that he will not tell you what to do. If you need help upon the path you’ve chosen for yourself, that is another matter entirely.”
“There is no shame in asking for help,” Sadi says slowly, with a meaningful look at Veery. “Even us prideful agell can sometimes find this to be true. However, if you mean to consign your fate to another’s whim… that is shameful.”
“There is no meaning to life as another’s tool,” Veery huffs, thinking of Catherine, of Dedue, of Ingrid and Dimitri. “Even the most despicable among us lose something in death – our lives – that’s why survival should always be our priority. But to sign away your agency to another’s will is… I can understand serving someone, especially under threat. There is little debasement my pride cannot handle if it means survival. But to submit yourself like that, to become more object than person… in doing so, you kill the person. If nothing left of you remains, no matter if the heart still beats, that is not survival.”
It is this very reason why Veery is so terrified of the Degradation. The affliction itself doesn’t kill the body, but it does kill the mind. And, to Veery’s best estimate, the mind is where the soul truly resides.
“We know and agree, my Veery,” Hoarvug purrs.
“I think,” Serin says, “I am beginning to gain some understanding. The prioritizing of survival and agency over all else does explain much of what we have heard.”
“Life and the freedom to enjoy it are the basest of needs,” Hoarvug says. “All else is built for ourselves upon that foundation. Where else ought our priorities lie?”
“You’ve a fair point. The question then is what ought we build upon that foundation?”
“Whatever your heart yearns for! My path is determined by my heart in the present moment. None save perhaps my Veery would know enough to even begin carving that path for me, even if they could.”
“What you do with your agency,” Veery says, “is what makes you, you. What you strive for is yours to determine and yours to reach. No one can choose that path for another.”
“And what,” Serin says, “may I ask, are you striving for?”
“Arcadia, for one,” Veery answers with a shrug. “I believe in Claude’s ideals, and want to see the Fódlan he’ll create. So, in essence, I want to end the war.”
“As do many,” Serin says. “And beyond that?”
“I hope to refine a method to cleanse the old Crest Stones of the Nabateans.”
“I have heard you succeeded in undoing Shambhala’s dirty work.”
“I have,” Veery says, “at a cost I’m not willing to continue paying. The method must be improved if I’m to cleanse any others.” A method that doesn’t include the patchwork memories within the Crest Stone deciding to gift Veery with their power. Veery has more than enough power already without adding more to it.
Then again, Veery still needs to do more research to determine if that gifting of power is necessary, as it was necessary for Sothis to gift him power in the Sealed Forest, or if that was just Badb’s decision which he might convince others not to make.
He has a sneaking suspicion it’s the former, considering how it all resolved. Even the initial plan was to use Badb’s power, just not to take it into himself in a way that it sticks.
Whatever the case, that’s all part of what Veery needs to refine about the process before he’s willing to consider trying that with any other Crest Stones.
“I see,” Serin says.
“There are other atrocities committed by Shambhala that need to be corrected, as well,” Veery says. “The specifics will likely be brought up in the peace talks but suffice it to say that it is not only the Nabateans who have been hurt, and I plan to keep thinking on how to remedy that.”
“Our symposium will be glad to assist in any way we can.”
“If that’s what you want to do, then bring it up next time you see the other leaders. I won’t tell you anything that the victims don’t want me to, so they’ll have all the information we’re willing to share on that.”
“I most certainly will,” Serin says. “It will be our honor if we can be of assistance to you and your friends.”
“I’d appreciate the assistance,” Veery admits. “Limited knowledge of Agarthan technology has been probably the biggest reason we haven’t already found a solution. If Beyul does agree to help, we might be able to resolve it much sooner than expected.”
“Even if the others do not, I and my fellows will,” Serin assures. “We have many brilliant minds here, even in such a new temple. We will find something.”
Yeah, somehow that’s not reassuring. Veery only says, “We’ll see.”
Veery sighs. He really does have a lot to do, doesn’t he? Perhaps he should stop being quite so lazy as he normally is if he ever wants to get back home.
The problem being… he’s not sure he can safely go home. He’s not sure he can safely stay in Fódlan, either, but his friends here and, to an extent, the temple here in Beyul, are likely his best chance to find some way to stave off the Degradation. If he disappears on his own for another five years, there’s no telling how far it will have progressed, and whether Veery will still even have the wherewithal to bother fighting it by then.
But it’s not like he doesn’t plan on coming back, right? It’ll be fine.
Still, he hopes the Agarthans here figure out Lysithea and Hapi’s problems. That’s one less thing Veery has to worry about his divine power being necessary for. It makes going back home more feasible.
Or… or perhaps there’s another option. Veery wants to go home. Bleak and cold as it is, Albinea resides still in his heart, and he misses it dearly when he’s away. All the same, there is still more he wishes to see. To run the plains of Almyra, Shamir recommends visiting Dagda, and Veery can’t deny it’s tempting to look. Veery recalls his visit to Brigid. It was dreadful in so many ways, especially the climate, but it was also wonderful in many more ways. A new land, with new culture… he still wears the shorts and, now that the weather here in Fódlan has gotten warmer, he wears them much as he does in Brigid, with little else but them.
Innovations like that, things Veery would never experience in his isolation… they’re worth seeing. Worth doing. And that captain, Daithi… Veery can’t explain exactly what’s changed – maybe the end is just more real to him now. As an agell, his lifespan means he never expects to see the end approaching like this. He knows well that he’ll die any way but old age when he goes, but that means that there’s no date hanging over him. A life well lived extends beyond his perception.
Not so much, anymore. Not with the Degradation. Perhaps he will be fine until his death day, or perhaps… It feels looming. Maybe that’s why. That’s why Lysithea is so frantic, so unwilling to relax and laze. Now is the first time Veery feels he at all understands her on that matter.
Maybe, when the war is over, after he visits home just for a little while, he’ll look for Daithi and take him up on that offer. It might be fun to sail the world for a while, to see all there is to see. Though, he should probably decide that before the final battle. Daithi will be there, after all, and that’s the best chance Veery has to meet him again if he intends to join the man’s crew, even temporarily.
Something to think more on.
Those seem to be adding up. At least they’re coming upon the end of the war itself.
“Veery,” Sadi murmurs gently, “we should relax while we can. Once we’re done here, we’ll be back to Adrestia.”
“And thus to Enbarr,” Antony says. He holds a hand to his head. “I still can’t believe we’re so close to the end.”
“How do humans make merry?” Hoarvug asks. “There is no reason our business cannot be pleasurable.”
“Ah, there’s an idea.” Serin smiles. “Of course, when we heard of your visit, we prepared celebrations. The attendance of a god is a rare thing, indeed. We were simply holding everything until we could ask what might be appropriate, given the political climate.”
Veery snorts. “Politics.”
“We take our pleasure where we make it, human,” Sadi says. “And we are but one step away from victory. It is you who is in question.”
“Many in Beyul mourn Shambhala, it’s true,” Serin admits, “but few do not understand that they were a severe threat not only to you, but to everyone. While opinions are mixed, there are those who will find cause for celebration even in Shambhala’s fall.”
Oh, great. A party. Just what Veery wanted to put up with today.
---
Predictably, when the celebrations begin, Veery is far from the center of things.
That is to say, he literally Rewarps himself away from the center of things, because he is not willing to put up with that today. It’s too many people, too close together, being too loud, and to make it all worse, they revere him.
That’s not to say that Veery doesn’t participate, though. He does wander a bit, taking in if not particularly enjoying the festive atmosphere and waving celebrants. Hilda finds him at one point and drags him to a few pop-up stalls just outside the temple district where they’re given some sort of food on skewers that Veery thinks is primarily mushroom.
There isn’t much meat around, though Veery supposes it must be hard to hunt while trapped underground. He is given fish, and apparently fish do populate the four streams coming from the four entrances to Beyul, but even then, it’s treated as a sort of delicacy.
(Though admittedly the reverence with which they all share this food with him makes it hard to tell what’s special for them and what’s not.)
Still, for a primarily plant-based diet, it’s not that bad. Veery learns long ago that he’s far more carnivore than humans tend to be, but this is surprisingly good for something he generally associates with raw berries and frozen roots dug out from the tundra.
The day actually ends up being quite nice, all things considered, when Claude finds him and Hilda and the three of them spend time at some of the games put on in the square. They even have an archery competition, which Claude obviously dominates at, but which he somehow convinces Veery to try.
Veery obviously and unashamedly cheats, since he knows he won’t win with or without doing so, and barely even draws the bow before just using wind magic to guide the arrow towards the target. Claude sticks his tongue out at Veery, who eagerly returns the gesture. “I’ve never used a bow in my life,” he says, smiling slyly. “What did you expect?”
“I expected you to be subtler,” Claude answers.
Veery just laughs at the mere thought.
“Yeah, that’s fair.”
While they wander, Veery sees a familiar face. His eyes meet with Asura’s, but with nothing more than a subtle nod, they silently agree to not address each other and pass each other by as if they have never met before.
They eventually stumble across Professor Byleth, Lysithea, and Hapi as well, and spend the next while with them doing – and it’s equally exasperating and interesting that this is a party game here – logic puzzles of all things, complete with debates with other teams about their conclusions.
(Veery steers clear of the debating itself, but it’s overall surprisingly fun. Caub would have loved it.)
And then Dorothea finds them, intent on Veery, and all but latches onto his arm and drags him, the others following bemusedly, towards a theatre. Despite himself, Veery gets a little excited when he realizes where they are.
They catch the tail end of an amateur drama production, during which Dorothea informs him that’s it’s an open stage and all they need to do is sign up. With a lot of heckling, she informs Veery that she’s signed up the both of them and that they’re performing something she’s written herself about the patchwork god.
Veery only agrees because she’s so very excited. She used to perform often, but rarely does she perform her own work, so this is a unique opportunity for her and Veery just… apparently has a soft spot for her.
It does go well, though, despite him having little time to prepare. Mostly because Dorothea lets him ad lib most of his part, and only teaches him a few important points that have to be there, but also because this is hardly the first time Dorothea has dragged him off to an impromptu drama practice.
Performance. Veery is doing his level best to pretend it’s just another practice in her room with no one but the occasional visitor watching.
Out of breath and satisfied, the two share a hug once they’re off the stage, then along with the others, they share a beer as well – or the Beyul equivalent, anyway.
It turns out, in the end, to be a delightful day. One, Veery thinks, they all need.

Patriarchs in Black Issue Explosive First LP, ‘Reach For The Scars’
~By Tom Hanno~
Tumblr media
You know an album is gonna be kick ass when Dan Lorenzo is helming guitar duties, it's just a matter of fact at this point. However, when you add in drummer Johnny Kelly of Type O Negative, Danzig, A Pale Horse Named Death, Seventh Void, Kill Devil Hill, and many more, then you know that there's about to be perfect drumming behind Dan's wealth of guitar riffs. Enter PATRIARCHS IN BLACK, whose first album, Reach for the Scars, will be out July 1st.
I've been exchanging emails with Dan for quite some time now, and he's one of the most prolific artists out there right now. He was in Hades back in the day, followed by Non-Fiction, and has worked with Jason McMaster (Dangerous Toys) in Cassius King, Nathan Opposition (Ancient VVidom) in Vessel of Light, and Bobby Blitz Elsworth (Overkill) in The Cursed. However, Patriarchs in Black doesn't rely on just one great vocalist like the four bands that I just mentioned, instead Dan and Johnny reached out to several vocalists to help them complete the vocal aspects of these songs, and they picked some of the best guys imaginable.
The singers include Karl Agell (who sang on my favorite C.O.C album, Blind), John Kosco from Dropbox, Dewey Bragg from Kill Devil Hill, Rob Traynor of Black Water Rising, and Dan Nastasi from Dan L's Non-Fiction days. Each of these guys bring in something different and unique, which helps make these songs all the better.
"I'm the Dog" features Karl Agell on vocals, and in my opinion it is the best song on the album. Karl sang on the only Corrosion of Conformity album that I truly enjoyed from start to finish, so his involvement with Patriarchs in Black makes me very happy; and he sounds amazing on this track; there's just something about his voice that hits me perfectly.
The verse riff is slightly staccato, and its sharp attack is felt as much as it is heard. I love the riffs Dan writes, they're always doomy, Black Sabbath inspired heaviness. Johnny also crushed it on the drums, but that's not surprising at this point in his career, he's adept at playing exactly what the songs call for in any project that he's involved in.
"Sing for the Devil" is up next, and features the vocal talents of John Kosco. The nice thing about John's approach here is that it reminds me of Pantera a little bit, more on the subdued, almost spoken type of stuff that Pantera used perfectly, but he also does much more than that on this song.
Again, the music here is excellent, showing Dan using a groove filled riff that oozes with a doom feel mixed with an almost southern metal twist; Dan also plays the bass track on this song.
Another standout is "Built of Misery", which is another of the songs that Karl sings on, and is the peak of his contributions on Reach for the Scars; he just sounds so damned good here.
The music is full of groove, and utilized a serious southern metal swagger to help accomplish that. I think that my favorite riff is when that single note main riff turns into more of a power chord structure, that little change adds tons of power to the original part.
Releases July 1st (get it here).
Interview with Dan Lorenzo of Patriarchs in Black
Tumblr media
The obvious first question is how did you and Johnny get together to create this project? Bobby "Blitz" Ellsworth (Overkill) had a little to do with that, correct?
Let’s not give my good friend Bobby Blitz too much credit! ( laughs) I’ve been a fan of Johnny’s for many years. I thought it was cool that he would even acknowledge me honestly. In the summer I try to play a lot of basketball. Then in the late fall I start picking up my guitar more regularly. I wrote the music for...maybe ten or eleven songs for the next Cassius King record with Jason McMaster and Jimmy Schulman. Ron Lipnicki is our drummer. I kept writing and writing and as we were moving along, Ron was kind of busy with some cover bands and work and I have the attention span of a nine year old boy. ( laughs) I have to keep moving. So, I was thinking of reaching out to Johnny to see if he would be willing to play drums. I mentioned it to Blitz and Blitz texted me, “Johnny is the perfect drummer for your riffs”. I sent Johnny a few songs and he agreed to record them. Now I had to think of a name for our project.
The band name is befitting of all the talent that's spread across the album, how did you settle on Patriarchs in Black?
As soon as Johnny tracked maybe one song I thought of the name. It just came to me. I use Jimmy Schulman as my confidant. Jimmy said, “That’s a great name.” I ran it by Johnny and it was settled; Patriarchs In Black.
I always ask artists how they create their music, especially with Covid throwing wrenches in all things over the last few years. I know you write a ton of riffs on your own, but did Johnny contribute to the music beyond playing the drums? And did you work together in person, or do the file sharing thing in order to record this album?
I’ve recorded seven albums in the last five years. And since the first Vessel Of Light EP which Nathan Opposition and I recorded together in the same room I recorded it this way. I go to JROD Productions in New York and I record my parts alone. So, basically I hand a finished, arranged song with all my guitars to Ron Lipnicki or in this case Johnny Kelly. After Johnny records his drums we send that to a singer and bassist.
All of the vocalists did amazing work on Reach for the Scars, Karl Agell is my favorite of the bunch, but each of them are exceptionally talented singers. What criteria was used when choosing which guy was better suited for each song?
A guy named Patrick Whitaker put me in touch with Karl. Karl actually jumped up onstage with my old band Non-Fiction in 1992 or 1993 in Raleigh to sing Sweet Leaf and then I didn’t see Karl again until the New England Stoner and Doom Festival four years ago. Johnny and I gave Karl what would become "Demon Of Regret," and while we waited for Karl to track his vocals Johnny and I both had the same idea simultaneously; Why don’t we ask friends of ours, different singers and bassists to play on Reach For The Scars. Johnny got Dewey Bragg and I reached out to the other singers. No real criteria other than they had to have done something before. Meaning, we weren’t looking to “discover” anyone.
Demon of Regret by Patriarchs In Black
I think that "I'm the Dog" is my favorite song, it's insanely memorable to me, and Karl sounds so good on it. What track would you pick as being representative of what Patriarchs in Black are?
That’s my favorite too, probably, but I’m REALLY happy with all of them.
Did you have control over which tracks were singles, or is that a label call? This is something I've often wondered throughout my years of mainlining music like it was heroin lol.
We pick the singles.
You close out the album with a killer cover of Led Zeppelin's Kashmir, and you guys give it new life; especially for a song that I feel has been beaten to death by radio for years. Why did you choose this cover, Jimmy Gnecco to sing it, and what made you feel that it would be a great way to end the record?
Let me think...I guess because I’ve always wanted to have Jimmy sing a song with me. Johnny loves Led Zeppelin and it’s not a song the band routinely covers. Eric J. Morgan was buds with Johnny and he and Jimmy knew each other previously, so it was perfect.
Are there any thoughts on playing any shows, or is this a studio project only?
Karl and I are dying to do shows...but Johnny is playing most weekends with Quiet Riot and everybody in the project lives all over the US. It would be tough, but we are trying to figure something out.
You're an extremely prolific songwriter, and I assume that you're already plotting out your next album. Would that be an accurate assumption? And if so, what band is up next?
I wrote the music for the 2nd Cassius King and I already have a few songs for what I hope will be the next Patriarchs In Black album.
I'd like to thank Dan for taking the time to answer these questions, and I also want to suggest that you all go check out Vessel of Light, Cassius King, Hades, Non-Fiction, and this upcoming Patriarchs in Black album. All of the bands are incredible, and Dan writes some very cool, doomy, Black Sabbath influenced riffs … which is never a bad thing.

Meet the tenyi monks. The tenyi style of martial art uses the four elements of water fire earth and wind which is combined with wood or dendro and light and darkness. There must be a balance with the elements cause too much can cause disaste especially dark cause that is what drove their master mad.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meet Monk of the tenyi or li Qiang. He is a very determined and curious individual or his personality is that of a Shonen protag. Then we have shaman of the tenyi or Chang Guang or jie Chang. Jie is a master of the tenyi style. She worked at the monastery as a shrine maiden which is basically the female monks of the monastery. She is Li Qiang's master. Their original master went insane and with too much dark power. If you notice the dragons that come out of them that is them using the martial art. They have different affinities depending on the person. Li has an affinity with earth while Jie has an affinity with water earth and fire.
Then we go to the tenyi spirits. The spirits all represent their specific element and I will tell you where they where found in Liyue. These spirits are manifestation of their respective elements. They are all named after the seven chakras in Buddhism.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
First we have adhara the sprit of earth. It is found up the tops liyue's mountains. The name adhara comes from the name muladhara the first chakra. Second we have Nahata who represents wind and was found in on a cliff near dragon spine mountain. Nahata comes from anahata which represents the fourth chakra. Third we have sthana which represents water and was found in where the icejade stayed in. Surprisingly was not aggressive to them cause most of the time they are aggressive with their territory but Sthana seems to like the icejade cause of them being combined with their element. Sthana comes from Svadhishthama which represents the second chakra. Then finally we have Mapura which represents fire and the name comes from Manipura or the third chakra. It was found in underneath a cavern deep in the chasm.
Then we meet the duo of Light and dark.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First up we have vishuda who represents darkness. Vishuda is not actually evil just the element is easy to sway into evil. Vishuda is considered the hardest element to master cause of its very uncontrollable nature but if mastered correctly could be one of the strongest people. Vishuda is found in adzdha's domain. Vishuda comes from Vishudda or the fifth chakra. Here is ashuna who represents light. It is one the hardest to master cause you actually have to meet the ashuna and he must let you master his element and only appears to the good of heart. Ashuna comes from ajna the sixth chakra.
Tumblr media
If you master all the six elements you meet sahasrara which represents the seventh chakra and has the exact name of the chakra.
Here is some things that tied all three yugioh groups in liyue together. Here is how the adepti characters meet the tenyi duo. The two monks where practicing their martial arts when they were interrupted by xiao ganyu and Shenhe. They were observing the duo and interested in learning what they were doing. Right as xiao was about to ask what they were doing. The duo felt something of like a dark presence. The duo explained their is a dark energy coming from somewhere and wanted to find it and explain that vishuda or a dark spirit is inside adzdaha's domain without knowing it was adzdaha's domain. They ran as fast as possible and found out some people are possed by dark energy leaking from vishuda. Then they went in to find the source and saw it was adzdaha being powered up. They stalled azdaha. On the other side Agel started running cause she sensed some people where in danger. Agel asked sthana if she can ride them to help the people in danger. Sthana flew as fast as possible and zhongli some of the adepti a few members of the liyue qixing changying and kingfisher talked to Acti and said to her they could ride him if they need to. Acti said they could ride kingfisher and they chased sthana. As soon as they arrived the tenyi duo where almost about to get crushed and then a miracle happened a little girl appeared and started to sing. Agel started to sing her mother's Lullaby after giving birth to her before she died. As soon as the duo where about to be crushed azdaha stopped and started to kneel and felt relaxed and finally feel asleep. Vishuda was now calm and started to bow. Xiao's karmic debt started to disappear when she was singing suddenly the tenyi spirits appeared and started to bow. The icejade and swordsoul started to bow and the adepti and the tenyi duo started to kneel at her show of power out of respect. Then all of a sudden sahasrara appeared and gave her a tiny whistle and then gave the tiny creator a whistle saying from now and to forever more the tenyi will serve the icejade no matter what dimension they are or whatever form the tenyi take as the yang zing or the tenyi of now they will protect the icejade. Then the giant dragon and the rest of the tenyi spirits disappeared. Except for sthana and the place where the icejade are staying in are know being protected by the tenyi and they gave icejade that where staying their the whistle Agel got and that explains why the icejades have those necklaces. During that time changying started to cry cause that song was the last words his wife said before she died. As soon as the giant dragon left Agel ran up to her father and hugged him. The others stopped kneeling as soon as she hugged changying . The duo then rushed over and asked what happened. Changying explained that the song she sang was the creator's Lullaby or the song of life. The duo explained the spirits that appeared are elementals and seemed to have bowed to her and explained that the she is a fragment of the creator. Changying said that the fragment of the creator is her mother who died but then it dawned on him when a fragment of the creator dies the fragment is always passed down to their child if they have any. They made the two must vow to never say anything about what happened here to the tenyi duo.
If you want to hear what the icejade Lullaby is called look up the song lost in thoughts from fire emblem fates the birthright one.
