Agrinio to Kefalonia

Breakfast was a bit fraught this morning. Rather than a buffet everyone ordered off a menu. There was only one waitress and long story short we waited 45 minutes for our breakfast.

In the end it wasn’t too bad, Jose and I with Chris and Sam, rolled out about 10 minutes behind everyone else. We zipped through town and then it was pretty flat and fast so it was a bit of a time trial for the first nearly 20km.

Then we hit the first of our two climbs - lots of yellow and some orange on the elevation 😩 I almost made it but the last sliver of orange defeated me. If it had been followed by a more forgiving gradient I would have been fine, but no 🙄 Anyway a short walk up around the corner and I was back on and finished the climb off.

Today’s ride was relatively short, 50km to Astakos, where after a coffee and a short wait we boarded the ferry to Kefalonia. The ferry took about 3 hours so we had a picnic lunch on board.

It was quite a nice ride following the coast around to our hotel and then the mother of all steep driveways that I didn’t even attempt. Two more big climbing days to go.

The plan had been to head to the famous Myrtos beach but unfortunately the weather was closing in so that idea got abandoned. Meanwhile our day of mini horrors continued with things breaking down back in L’Escala which we needed to deal with and our room for the next 4 nights being not exactly as advertised. Thankfully Sam intervened and we couldn’t be happier (in fact we feel a bit guilty).

Tonight we walked into Agia Efimia (the town where we are staying on Kefalonia) for dinner. It was a lovely night and after a lovely rainbow, the weather settled down for the evening. 🤞the weather holds tomorrow.

Today we also celebrate the Holy Metropolitan Kallinikos of Edessa. Saint Kallinikos was an ascetic Bishop, who, according to the witnesses, had a venerable repose. The new Venerable Kallinikos was born in Sitaralona, Agrinio in 1918, to a poor family. He graduated from the Theological School of Athens, and was ordained a deacon and a priest by his brother according to the flesh, Metropolitan Konstantinos of Didymoteichos, Orestiados and Soufliou, in 1957. He served as a secretary and Preacher of the Metropolis of Aitolias and Akarnanias during the hierarchy of Metropolitan Theokletos.    On June 25th, 1967, he was ordained Metropolitan of Edessa in the Holy Church of St. Dionysios, the Patron Saint of Athens, succeeding Metropolitan Dionysios of Edessa. His consecration was served by Metropolitan Dionysios of Trikkes and Stagon, together with Metropolitans Meletios of Kythera, Konstantinos of Didymoteichos, Synesios of Kassandreias, and Theokletos of Aitolias and Akarnanias. A few days before his election, the eparchy of Almopias, according to the decision of the Hierarchy of the Church of Greece, was detached from the Metropolis of Florina, and attached to the Metropolis of Edessa. He was a man of almsgiving, prayer, meekness, and had many pastoral activities in his metropolis. He was also very careful with his ordinations, and he had within him love and the fear of God. His spiritual children are many. He left a good and virtuous memory through his monastic life, and example for clergy and laity to imitate. Hello again. In my previous post, I talked about the regional unit of Aetolia-Acarnania. Here, I'm gonna present some of its important cities. Starting with the capital itself…

Artistic choices: As with Aetolia and Acarnania in the previous post, I based her design from one of my aunts. Specifically, I made her tall with brown hair. I originally intended her to have scars all over her body, from the three Sieges (that we are going to talk about later) that took place in her city, but I ended up finding this idea over-the-top and she has fair skin. She is famous as a fish farming site, so I gave her clothes that make it easy for her to access waterz like boots, shorts and a plain t-shirt.

Messolonghi (as I prefer to call her) is the capital of Aetolia-Acarnania, despite not being its biggest city (Agrinio holds this position). Think of it like Edmonton and Calgary's case in Alberta, Canada.

It's one of these greek towns that has associated itself with the Greek War of Independence, a War that lasted from 1821 to 1829, and ended with the Greeks receiving their freedom from the Ottoman Empire.

To name, during that war, three dramatic sieges took place there. The first two (in 1822 and 1823) were unsuccessful, but the third was devastated for the Messolonghians.

Let's start from the beginning. Messolonghi is a city protected by a chain of small islands and its lagoon from the sea, and by a wall and the marshy terrain from the landward side. Additionally, it emerged as a fishing and trading settlement. All these made her a place in a vital position and that's why the Ottomans attacked her.

The reason the first two sieges were unsuccessful was due to the fact that the Ottomans focused solely on cutting connections and food from the land and thanks to the town's history as as a fishing and trading settlement, the residents could supply themselves via the sea route.

On the third time, however, the Ottomans came with a much stronger navy, cutting connections from both the land and the sea. The siege lasted till the spring of 1826. The Greeks had grown devastated and weak after a long and suffering winter without supplies, even going as far as to eat dogs, cats and mice from the streets. The residents looked skeletal and you could see corpses on the ground.

It was then that the Messolonghians decided to burst out of the gates and attempt to lead the women and children to safety. Meanwhile, those who were dying and/or too sick were piled into houses packed full of gunpowder to blow themselves up when the Ottomans arrived to kill them.

On the night of 10 April, the Greeks realised their plan, having to face an army of Ottomans who were informed about their escape. 10,000 emerged. Only 1,000 Greeks made it alive.

It's one of the most popular and important event of the Greek War of Independence, as it moved thousands of Philhellenes across the globe, who came to support the Greeks and it inspired works of art, like "The Free Besieged", a poem written by our national poet, Dionysios Solomos.

Here's an unofficial English translation I found on the Internet:

The famine blackened the eyes. The mother is swearing onto the eyes.

The good soldier from Souli stands aside and cries:

"Lone dark rifle, why do I hold you in the arm,

for you are a burden to me and even the Muslim knows ?"

April and Eros are dancing and laughing together,

and as many blossoms and cores come out, so many weapons enclose you.

A small white hill of sheep yells in movement,

and gets thrown deep within the sea again,

and merges its vast whiteness with the beauties of the sky.

And into the waters of the lake, which it reached in fast,

a blue butterfly played with its shadow,

that felt its sleep within the wild Fleur-de-lys.

The petite worm is also coming on its age.

The nature is magic and a dream in beauty and grace,

the black stone and the dried up grass are vast golden.

It spills itself with a thousand faucets, it speaks on a thousand languages:

"Whoever dies today will perish a thousand times."

The theme of the poem is about temptation and it's easily obvious on the last lines, where beautiful euphemisms are used to describe nature. One could ask "Who would want to die in such a beautiful day?". But as history (or to be more precise, this episode) showed, the Greeks preferred death over becoming slaves of the Ottomans.

In this drawing, you can see a mother about to commit suicide after having killed her kid (which is seen lying in her left arm), in an attempt not to end in the arms of the Ottomans.

The Garden of Heroes, a place dedicated to important military and political figures of the city, particularly from the Greek War of Independence.

Oh, I forgot to say that Lord Byron, a famous English poet and Philhellene died there.

Honestly, I feel like I talked too much about the Greek War of Independence…

On an unrelated note, she's in a rivalry with Agrinio, the biggest city and Economic Centre of Aetolia-Acarnania, but we will discuss it later (honestly, if you're following me for a while or if you've read my #athens and thessaloniki adventures posts, you will have noticed that we Greeks don't exactly get along)…

Artistic choices: I based her body type and hair from my mom, as she grew up in a small village near Agrinio. My mom doesn't smoke, but I made her a smoker, since, as I stated in the fun fact above, Agrinio is known across Greece for its tobacco production. My mom has participated in this when she was a little girl and she has a lot to tell me about it… Plus, she isn't redhead, she's actually brunette, she just likes to dye her hair red (just like my mom).

Agrinio is the biggest city of the regional unit of Aetolia-Acarnania and its Economic Centre. It's not the capital however. It's a similar case like the one with Edmonton and Calgary in Alberta, Canada.

It has acquired one of the worst reputations among greek cities, as a city that you "should avoid at all costs" and its residents as people you "should avoid at all costs". Here, I'm going to dissolve this ugly reputation or at the very least, try to justify it.

Agriniots in general are seen as "savages" that speak terribly greek. The reason for this is because, unbestknown for the majority of non-Agriniots, the people who claim to be from Agrinio aren't from Agrinio. They're from nearby villages, they just say Agrinio to help the listener locate the place. And because villagers have this reputation as being uncivilised and because every village speaks with a different accent, Agriniots earned the aforementioned reputation.

They're also in a rivalry with Messolonghi. The best way I can describe it is like this:

Agrinio: I'm the biggest city and Economic Centre of this regional unit! Why is SHE the capital?!

Messolonghi: I deserve this title because I'm an historic city!

Etc, etc

Artistic choices: He's a lobster, because his name "Astakos" in Greece means lobster and I thought it was funny. However, I don't know how he got that name. I searched information online and I didn't find anything about Astakos being famous for his lobster farming.

Nothing to say, except that it's a nice village to stroll and have dinner if you ever find yourself in Greece. Plus, I liked this building when I visited it.

Artistic choices: When most foreigners think about us Greeks, they think of slightly tanned people with brown or black hair. This is to a great extent true. For this reason, I wanted to create a character that looked less "Greek" and more "foreigner" just for the fun of it. She would be woman, have blonde hair (for the record, there're Greeks who have blonde hair, but there're huge brown hues on it. I wanted her hair to be pure blonde) and blue eyes. And that's how Nafpaktos came to be!

During the time she was under the Venetian Republic, she was named Lepanto. It's also the place where the Battle of Lepanto happened. You probably have heard it at least one in your life, as it's one of the most famous naval battles, and if you're Spaniard, it rings a bell in your ear.

It's considered of vital importance to the Europeans, since it marked the turning-point of Ottoman military expansion into the Mediterranean. Miguel de Cervantes, whom you might know as the author of Don Quixote, participated, where he severely injured his arm. In fact, there's a statue of him lifting his right arm, the arm which he used to write several famous literature works.

She's also the second biggest city of Aetolia-Acarnania after Agrinio.

Nafpaktos to Agrinio

A slightly later start today as it wasn’t a long ride. After a lovely gentle climb followed by a descent with roadworks (🙄) we stopped at a lovely cafe for coffee. We then had another gentle climb and magic descent and then it was flat all the way to Agrinio. On the map I thought we would have lovely views of the lake but sadly not, it was too far away.

There were forecasts for rain again so the decision was taken to push on to the hotel for lunch. Jose and I regrouped after the second descent for the last 30km of the ride. It looked like the rain was coming so it was pretty much a time trial to the hotel 😳

It did rain briefly but only after we were all happily ensconced in our hotel and fed.

With the shorter day I took advantage of the opportunity for a massage. We then went for a walk to find an atm and a coffee, which turned into a rose too.

A very nice dinner in our hotel tonight. A bit too nice, we were so full we had to go for another walk after dinner.

Κάθε χρόνο κυκλοφορούν άπειρα καινούργια βιβλία. Τι πιστεύετε ότι μπορεί να προσθέσει το δικό σας βιβλίο; Για ποιο λόγο κάποιος να το επιλέξει για να το διαβάσει;   Απάντηση Πιστεύω ότι άτομα που ασχολούνται με την ασιατική κουλτούρα, όπως εγώ, τα οποία είτε διαβάζουν (manga, webtoons) είτε βλέπουν (anime, Jdramas, Kdramas), θα απολαύσουν την ιστορία του βιβλίου. Παράλληλα, το βιβλίο αυτό αποτελεί μια ευκαιρία και για εκείνους που δεν γνωρίζουν πολλά για την ασιατική κουλτούρα, που τόσο αγαπώ, να έρθουν σε μία πρώτη επαφή μαζί της. Επιλέξετε δύο χαρακτηριστικά αποσπάσματα από το βιβλίο, που να εκφράζουν αυτό που θέλετε να μεταδώσετε στους αναγνώστες, ώστε να μπορέσουν να καταλάβουν πιο εύκολα τον κόσμο του βιβλίου σας. Απάντηση Το πρώτο απόσπασμα που επιλέγω αφορά έναν άλλο κόσμο που κρύβεται πίσω από την ανθρώπινη πραγματικότητα. «Τι ακριβώς ήταν αυτοί τότε;» ρώτησε η Χάνα.«Νομίζω ότι την απάντηση την ξέρεις ήδη αλλά θα σου πω. Τα πλάσματα αυτά έχουν διάφορα ονόματα, δαίμονες, όνι, στοιχειακά, πνεύματα, γιόκαϊ. Ο κάθε πολιτισμός έχει εφεύρει διαφορετικά ονόματα για το είδος τους. Αυτό βέβαια δε σημαίνει ότι όλα έχουν κακές προθέσεις ή θέλουν να πειράξουν τους ανθρώπους. Πάρε για παράδειγμα την ιδιοκτήτρια αυτού του καφέ» είπε και έκανε νόημα στην Χάνα να κοιτάξει εκεί που της υποδείκνυε. «Είναι ένα στοιχειακό της αλεπούς. Και ενώ οι περισσότεροι του είδους της συνήθως πειράζουν ή εκμεταλλεύονται τους ανθρώπους, εκείνη είναι μία από τις εξαιρέσεις. Βοηθά και προστατεύει τους ανθρώπους, αν έρθει κάποιος πεινασμένος, θα τον ταΐσει και δεν θα ζητήσει αντίτιμο για τις υπηρεσίες της» συμπλήρωσε ο Κιόσουκε. Το δεύτερο απόσπασμα που επιλέγω, αφορά μία μονομαχία, μιας και το βιβλίο μου έχει και αρκετή δράση. Στο συγκεκριμένο κομμάτι θέλω να αναδείξω πώς μια τέτοια μάχη φαίνεται από την πλευρά εκείνων που δεν συμμετέχουν σε αυτήν. Κοιτούσε αποσβολωμένη τα δύο αυτά πλάσματα, τυλιγμένα μέσα σε κάποιου είδους αύρα. Η ενέργεια του Κιόσουκε ήταν κόκκινη και συμπαγής γύρω του, ενώ του Μάνγκαρα ήταν μαύρη και έμοιαζε να καλύπτει όλο το δωμάτιο.Αυτές οι δύο ενέργειες φαινόταν να πολεμούν η μία την άλλη. Σαν ένας αλλόκοσμος χορός μεταξύ του σκότους και της φωτιάς, όπου το σκοτάδι προσπαθεί να καταπιεί την πηγή του φωτός και η φωτιά αντιστέκεται σθεναρά, προσπαθώντας να φωτίσει και να ζεστάνει τους πάντες γύρω της.Και αυτό ήταν αλήθεια για την Χάνα. Αυτό το σκοτάδι την τρόμαζε. Το ένιωθε να την καταπίνει. Η φωτιά, από την άλλη πλευρά, ήταν για εκείνη ο φάρος, ο οδηγός για να μην χαθεί μέσα στο απόλυτο τίποτα. Ωστόσο, αυτήν τη φωτιά δεν θα μπορούσε να την πλησιάσει πολύ. Έμοιαζε με μια φωτιά που θα κατάπινε τα πάντα στο διάβα της. Αισθάνθηκε πως αυτός δεν ήταν ο Κιόσουκε που είχε γνωρίσει η ίδια. Ήταν ένας άλλος Κιόσουκε, τρομαχτικός. Πιστεύετε ότι μέσα στους μύθους και στους θρύλους για τους λυκάνθρωπους μπορεί να υπάρχει κάποια αλήθεια; Μπορεί να υπάρχουν στα αλήθεια πλάσματα του σκοταδιού κρυμμένα κάτω από τη σύγχρονη πραγματικότητα; Απάντηση Σίγουρα, οι θρύλοι και οι μύθοι είναι συνήθως εξιστορήσεις, κάποιου αληθινού γεγονότος, εμπλουτισμένες με αρκετή δόση φαντασίας. Αλλά αυτό είναι που μας κάνει να τις λατρεύουμε. Ως λάτρης του φανταστικού γενικότερα, πάντα υπάρχει στην άκρη του μυαλού μου η ανάγκη να ξεφεύγω από την σύγχρονη πραγματικότητα. Αρκετές φορές φαντάζομαι πως μέσα από τις σκιές του δρόμου θα πεταχτεί κάποιο πλάσμα πλασμένο από τους εφιάλτες κάποιου άλλου. Βέβαια, δεν περιμένω να δω κάποιον λυκάνθρωπο μπροστά μου. Μπορώ όμως να γράψω ένα βιβλίο για το πώς θα ήταν μια τέτοια συνάντηση. Περιγράψτε μας τον χαρακτήρα του πρωταγωνιστή και γιατί κάνει ότι αποφάσισε να κάνει.   Απάντηση Ο Κιόσουκε, είναι ένα άτομο ή πλάσμα, όπως το εκλαμβάνει ο καθένας, που ακολουθεί κατα γράμμα τους κανόνες που έχει επιβάλλει στον εαυτό του. Είναι ξεκάθαρος σε αυτά που λέει και κάνει και δεν έχει απώτερους σκοπούς, σε αντίθεση με τα άλλα μαγικά πλάσματα του βιβλίου. Η μοναδικη του αδυναμία είναι η Μασάκι, την οποία και δεν κατάφερε να προστατέψει. Νιώθοντας τύψεις για τον θάνατό της, έχει αποφασίσει να κάνει ότι χρειαστεί για να εξιλεωθεί έστω και λίγο. Στην προκειμένη περίπτωση, με το να προστατέψει την Χάνα με οποιοδήποτε κόστος. Καθώς αποφασίσατε να κυκλοφορήσει το βιβλίο και στα Αγγλικά πιστεύετε ότι έχει πιθανότητες για μια επιτυχία εκτός Ελλάδας; Απάντηση Σίγουρα με κάθε νέο εγχείρημα θέλεις να είσαι αισιόδοξος για την δουλειά σου και να ελπίζεις ότι θα πάει καλά. Θέλεις οι αναγνώστες να αγαπήσουν την ιστορία σου, καθώς εκείνοι καθορίζουν αν ένα βιβλίο θα γίνει επιτυχία. Γι’ αυτό το λόγο, θα ήθελα πολύ να δω πώς θα κρίνει το βιβλίο μου το αναγνωστικό κοινό πέρα από τα σύνορα τη�� χώρας μας. Ασχολείστε με τον Ιαπωνικό πολιτισμό και μαθαίνετε και Ιαπωνικά. Να περιμένουμε και μια έκδοση στα Ιαπωνικά ή είναι όντως πολύ δύσκολο για έναν Έλληνα να γράψει λογοτεχνία στα Ιαπωνικά; Απάντηση Πιστεύω ότι κάθε συγγραφέας θα ήθελε τα βιβλία του να μεταφράζονται και σε άλλες γλώσσες. Όσον αφορα τα Ιαπωνικά, το επίπεδό μου είναι για την ώρα αρκετά χαμηλό ώστε να μπορέσω να γράψω ή να μεταφράσω ένα βιβλίο σε αυτήν τη γλώσσα. Θεωρώ ότι είναι πολύ δύσκολο να γράψεις ένα τέτοιο βιβλίο αν δεν έχεις ζήσει στην Ιαπωνία και δεν έχεις βιώσει τον πολιτισμό τους από πρώτο χέρι, διότι είναι τελείως διαφορετικός από τον δικό μας. Φυσικά αυτό είναι καθαρά προσωπική μου άποψη με βάση τις γνώσεις που διαθέτω. Τα τελευταία δύο χρόνια ο κόσμος άλλαξε με τρόπο που δεν περιμέναμε με πανδημίες και πολέμους δημιουργώντας ένα σκοτεινό μέλλον για την ανθρωπότητα. Πιστεύετε ότι η λογοτεχνία του φανταστικού σαν λογοτεχνική δύναμη ανατροπής μπορεί να δώσει διέξοδο στα όνειρα των ανθρώπων; Εσείς πώς βιώνετε όλες αυτές τις καταστάσεις; Απάντηση Προσωπικά βλέπω σκοτεινό το μέλλον της ανθρωπότητας με την πορεία που έχουμε επιλέξει να ακολουθήσουμε. Οδηγούμαστε σε ένα δυστοπικό μέλλον, το οποίο δεν είναι από τα αγαπημένα μου είδη λογοτεχνίας. Δεν ξέρω αν η λογοτεχνία του φανταστικού μπορεί να διατηρήσει τα όνειρα των ανθρώπων ζωντανά. Αν υπάρχει όμως κάποια αλήθεια σε αυτό, τότε χαίρομαι για αυτήν την μικρή συνδρομή που προσφέρουν οι συγγραφείς σε αυτούς τους καιρούς. Σε ευχαριστούμε για τον χρόνο σας. Ελπίζουμε να μπορέσουμε σύντομα να οργανώσουμε Όψεις του Φανταστικού και να παρουσιάσετε το βιβλίο σας σε κοινό. Ακόμα, θα ήθελα να πω και ένα μεγάλο ευχαριστώ στους αναγνώστες μου που με στήριξαν απο το πρώτο μου βιβλίο και συνεχίζουν να με στηρίζουν όλα αυτά τα χρόνια. Ελπίζω το βιβλίο μου να σας ταξιδέψει έστω και για λίγο σε έναν άλλο κόσμο, ίσως όχι καλύτερο από τον δικό μας, αλλά σίγουρα διαφορετικό.
