if sky factory is the tale of the gods (one of creation; one of whimsy; one where the limits of what’s possible is constantly pushed; it’s the story of the gods expanding their world, molding it to suit their fancy), then stoneblock is the tale of humanity.

It’s still one of creation, to an extent, but it’s more about discovery and the struggle to survive. Our heroes (Jack, Gavin, Jeremy, Lindsay, Alfredo, Trevor, and Matt) are born (spawned) alone, in the darkness, with not much to help them survive. They have to make do with what little they have. They spend hours (days? months? years? it’s hard to gauge the passage of time when there’s no sun to measure it by) toiling away, digging and digging, hoping and praying that there’s a reason for this. There’s a reason they’re there. There’s a reason they’re digging. That there might be someone else out there. That they’re not alone with only the company of a pet rock. 

and then they do find each other. first they come together in pairs, but ultimately they form a group, using each others tunnels, and, ultimately, creating a place to call home. Once they have that, everything else more or less falls into place. they take on their roles: jack, the simple farmer (perhaps smiled upon by the chicken farmer god?); matt and jeremy, the magicians/alchemists/”wise men,” and their ideological counterpart, trevor, the scientist; gavin, the artist (with his nonsensical and seemingly frivolous creations); lindsay, the blacksmith and miner; and alfredo, a fool, but always willing to help where he can. they’re not perfect, but they’re far stronger and far better off than they ever were alone (although jack might consider otherwise).

a farm. a temple. a place to rest their weary heads. in the dark they were alone. in the dark they found each other. and in the dark, they make this terrifying, inhospitable, monster filled world their home.

There’s something so, incredibly human about coming together, literally carving a place out in the earth to call it home, grasping for some sense of control, and working together to understand the world around them (be it through magic or farming). it’s all about coming together and making meaning where there may not have been one before.

what i’m saying is that stoneblock exists in a similar world as sky factory, only it’s the human experience of what it’s like to live in a world that’s been newly born
