Yes okay thank you now I am somehow imagining Makuta painstakingly carving the most balanced Koli balls under Ahkmou's supervision

Oh. So turns out 'Koli' is a Hawaiian word for meteor. I bet that's why Ahkmou's infected Koli Balls were called Comets. They thought they were slick with that one, didn't they?

Brown Matoran. What's with most of these guys being weirdly consequential to the plot?

Nuhrii is she/her, Orkahm is she/her, and Ahkmou is he/him, for future reference.

Onewa, Ahkmou, and Hafu
I think I've said this before, but I think it's possible to spin a story out of Ahkmou and Hafu being identical.
Hafu's ego is generally a point of comedy, both in the story and in the fandom. He's always carving, he's always making statues of himself, and he always signs them.
It's almost like he used to have a nigh-identical rival who had similar skills.
It's one of those things about Ahkmou's character that gets ignored in favour of "Heehoo asshole", but he was genuinely a master carver back in Metru Nui. He was the main rival to Onewa, not Hafu, and something like that could well give poor Hafu a complex. One that lingers after the memory wipe, and after Ahkmou's life spirals into a very dark path. And after Hafu no longer looks like his counterpart.
But why does that happen? We've seen Matoran from Metru Nui change their masks upon arrival to Mata Nui, or at some point after that. Jaller, Kongu, Orkahm, etcetera. And it doesn't always have a reason behind it, besides possible turbulence during the Great Rescue, or them being handled roughly by the Vahki during their capture (let's be real, the Vahki used to demolish sectors of the city just to catch a Rahi, they weren't going to be gentle with the Matoran). But I think we can use it to explain a shift in Onewa.
A big part of 2005 is Vakama and Matau's issues finally boiling over into open, hostile conflict, blown out of all proportion by the Hordika venom. At the end of it, the two are firm friends, apparently the firmest friends among all of the Metru.
But Onewa is left out of this character development arc, for the most part. Early-days Onewa is a raging jerk, and kind of a bully, but as a Turaga he's level-headed and stern, and much wiser, quick to be the one to resolve conflict rather than the one causing half the issues the Metru have to deal with.
Rather than him just mellowing out during the Dark Times, I think the thing that shifted him was realising that Ahkmou was missing. Not only did they lose one, leaving the Great Rescue incomplete, but it was one of his Matoran that they lost. Brash, confident, loudmouth Onewa is the one with a hole in his village.
And here's Hafu, walking around as the spitting image of Ahkmou, and putting up statues in his own image every time he gets the chance.
Hafu gets a Pakari after that.

Summary:
With Spherus Magna rejoined and Makuta Teridax dead, Ahkmou thought he could start anew, free from his old master's shadow. But with his past haunting him at every turn, he turns to tales of another matoran who, like him, was close to the shadows. But through it all he finds that, even in death, his old master is not easily escaped from.
Gavla sought solitude from the naivety of her fellow matoran. With the world rejoined, she found the most remote location she could and settled in for what she expected would be a quiet, lonely life. When an infamous matoran arrives looking for her however, her life takes a sudden turn into a journey which will let her step deeper into the shadows.
Special Thanks
@killy for both the inspiration piece that got me going on this fic and for creating the absolutely amazing title cover! I absolutely encourage everyone to check out her work and consider commissioning them!
@byz-was-here for beta reading and bringing down my wordiness a bit, heheh. I appreciate it greatly! It's been great going back and forth with you on this and your excellent fic, A Company of Toa.

Y'know, looking back on it, it's cool how we started to get some background character info on Ahkmou from the very beginning. When he first appears in MNOG, we don't know his name, or why he's allied with Makuta, just that he's a fast-talking, silver-tongued salesman who seems like he could sell anyone anything. Heck, the only reason he doesn't sell the player anything is because we're playing as Takua, who of course has no money, likely for good reason.
But we also know one other thing. He's a master carver.
It's odd. Ahkmou's backstory as one of the most skilled and prominent carvers in Metru Nui doesn't come up for another three years, but that element of his character is there from the get-go when Epena gushes over the craftsmanship of the Comets. "Whoever carved them is truly a master!" he says. And that was Ahkmou. He carved those Kolhii balls, the best Kolhii balls ever made by all accounts, infection notwithstanding. He did that.
Don't mind me, I'm just over here clinging to my headcanon that Ahkmou's road to recovery will begin with him rediscovering his skill and passion for art.
