Most children in villages in Sudan attend to the Khalwa instead of elementary school. The Khalwa is established and funded by the local community, where students from ages 6 live and learn Quran. Students start by writing on a piece of wood (Loah, the Arabic word for Wooden Board), they write with ink on the Loah, wash it after memorizing by heart and move on to the next group of verses.
