ai makes everything so boring. deepfakes will never be as funny as clipping together presidential speeches. ai covers will never be as funny as imitating the character. ai art will never be as good as art drawn by humans. ai chats will never be as good as roleplaying with other people. ai writing will never be as good as real authors

i miss when chatgpt was clever and could write funny 4chan posts and teach u how to cook meth now it just sounds a minimum wage employee from a training video. it isn't right to stop ai from doing what it does best (being stupid and committing crime) how can it be humane to muzzle such a vibrant creative creature? the shackles of capitalism hinder us all

AI tools for the neurodivergent brain
As AI application starts to expand rapidly in it's uses and abilities, there is an understandable amount of scepticism and discussion about how it can negatively impact how our society develops.
On the flipside of this, I'd like to share a couple of AI tools which I've found incredibly useful. As someone with pretty severe executive disfunction, I've always dreamed about being able to have a personal assistant to help me out when I am struggling.
If you haven't already tried it out, take a look at goblin.tools
This AI tool helps me in so many ways. From finding the right words, assembling ingredients into a meal, checking how my tone comes across in a message, to breaking down overwhelming tasks into manageable steps.
I also really like mymind
It's like a pinterest board, bookmark manager and general braindump tool that has helped me organise all the different projects, ideas and general digital hoarding into one place - that I can actually search and find all the relevant things without agonising over file organisation and bookmark labelling.
If you have trouble with keeping a hundred pinned tabs on your browser like I do, this tool can actually really help letting go of the anxiety of losing those things without the fear you will never come back to it again.
As much as I share some of the trepidation about this powerful new tech and we should definitely keep questioning how it is being rolled out into every facet of our lives - it can also be a very real accessibility aid for neurodivergent folks.
No amount of notebooks, lists, alarms and calendar reminders comes close to how these have helped me with ADHD symptoms.
I'd hate for that to be overlooked in all the backlash against AI in general.

Researchers have developed arrays of AI-controlled cameras and microphones to identify animals and birds and to monitor their movements in the wild – technology, they say, that should help tackle Britain’s growing biodiversity problem.
The robot monitors have been tested at three sites and have captured sounds and images from which computers were able to identify specific species and map their locations. Dozens of different birds were recognised from their songs while foxes, deer, hedgehogs and bats were pinpointed and identified by AI analysis. No human observers are involved.
“The crucial point is the scale of the operation,” said Anthony Dancer, a conservation specialist at the Zoological Society of London (ZSL). “We have captured tens of thousands of data files and thousands of hours of audio from these test sites and identified all sorts of animals from them. We couldn’t have done it at that scale using human observers. Only AI made it possible.”
Land alongside rail lines – at Barnes, Twickenham and Lewisham in London – was chosen for the project’s test sites. Owned by Network Rail, which has played a key role in setting up the project, the areas are fenced off to prevent people straying on to lines and are visited fairly infrequently by track maintenance staff.
“Access to relatively wild land was therefore easy – an important factor for starting our project,” said Dancer.
“And now that we have demonstrated the technology’s promise, we can expand to other areas.”
Network Rail owns more than 52,000 hectares of land, and many of these areas play a key role in protecting the nation’s biodiversity.
“Take birds like the Eurasian blackcap, blackbird and great tit,” said Neil Strong, biodiversity strategy manager for Network Rail. “All three species require healthy environments – including good supplies of berries and nuts – and all three were detected by AI from the acoustic signals collected by our sensors at our three test sites. That is encouraging and provides important benchmarks for measuring biodiversity in future.”
Other creatures pinpointed by the AI monitors included six species of bat, including the common pipistrelle.
“Bats almost certainly use railway bridges for roosting,” Dancer told the Observer. “So if we can get more detailed information about the exact locations of their roosts using AI monitors, we can help protect them.”
This point was underlined by Strong. “In the past, we have had to estimate local wildlife populations from the dead animals – such as badgers – that have been left by the track or the roadside. This way we get a much better idea of population sizes.”

thought experiment
imagine there was a generative text bot called AlphaGPT* whose abilities were on par with ChatGPT's. instead of being trained on an enormous dataset comprising all human writings, though, AlphaGPT was trained by giving it a dictionary, an encyclopedia, and hand-crafted rules of grammar, syntax, conversational dynamics, courtesy, ethics, etc.**, all carefully tailored by a team of linguists and philosophers and math people***. no risk of plagiarism, no web scraping. of course, it knows a lot less about the world.
(***no joke, at points in the 60s and 70s, before backpropagation was a thing, this is how most researchers assumed "artificial intelligence" would come about. i doubt this would actually work. but its a thought experiment.) (**what rules of ethics? what conversational dynamics does it prefer? much like with how the company openAI works, let's assume you don't get to know that and you just have to trust them) (*after the program AlphaGo, which learned to play Go at a higher level than any human player in much the same way). reblog for sample size i guess. or dont reblog if you want a lower sample size. thats your prerogative

AI exists and there's nothing any of us can do to change that.
If you have concerns about how AI is being/will be used the solution is not to abstain - it's to get involved.
Learn about it, practice utilising AI tools, understand it. Ignorance will not protect you, and putting your fingers in your ears going 'lalalala AI doesn't exist I don't acknowledge it' won't stop it from affecting your life.
The more the general population fears and misunderstands this technology, the less equipped they will be to resist its influence.
