Phantom Pain
Angstpril 2024: Day 10
Rohan was the first to notice when Lin rubbed her forehead. Pema watched him toddle over to her, crawl up beside her on the cushion, and worm his way under her arm until she took her hand down to steady him in her lap. His mother thought she might just melt at the way Rohan lifted ShuShu up to give Lin a kiss on the forehead.

The volume of Jinora and Meelo’s argument crested as they chased each other along the breezeway leading to the family’s quarters. The game’s rules were important, after all. Air Nomad heritage was at stake in these things. Would they respect tradition, or strike out onto new paths?
But when Meelo’s scooter spun him far enough along to see Lin bent over the railing, looking off into the trees behind the house, rubbing her forehead, he froze and plopped to the ground. Jinora, caught completely off guard, slammed into his back, causing them to tumble over each other for several lengths.
The ruckus snapped her attention to them, but her face looked strange. The children looked at each other, and ran over to hug her.
Uncharacteristically, she knelt between them, and hugged them back.

Ikki did not want to clean her room. That was boring.
A quick glance outside told her that no one was walking around below, so she whipped out her glider, and jumped through the window.
The currents carried her around the main tower until she was looking out over the meditation courtyard. In the distance, she could see Lin’s black form stepping to the top of the Thousand Steps. She banked against the breezes to go say hello to the Chief.
The clomp of Lin’s boots rang out from the stone, loudly enough that Ikki could hear every step Lin took. Until she stopped cold.
Ikki noticed that she was facing the dormitories, a place Ikki knew that Lin knew as well as any of them did. Playing badgermole hunt with Lin was never any fun because she knew every place there was to hide. Even on the roof!
But then Lin seemed to get small, and Ikki got worried. She angled her glider to bring her close.
Lin was on her knees on the pavement, one hand limp in her lap. The other was rubbing at a spot in the middle of her forehead.
Ikki floated down in front of Lin, who looked almost shocked.
Ikki could feel all the questions she wanted to ask, but they all felt wrong. She knelt in front of Lin, and reached up to take the troublesome hand away from Lin’s face. Gently, she kissed the fingertips on that hand before pulling it down to touch the stone under their knees.
Lin gasped and sighed, and bowed her head. Beneath her knees, Ikki could feel little tremors in the stone, and she wondered if that was what Lin felt all the time.
She covered Lin’s hand with her own, stretched up, and placed a tiny kiss on Lin’s forehead.

The heavy thump woke Kya with a start.
She rolled over and reached to the other side of the bed. Not finding Lin, she sat up.
“I won’t tell you anything, you monster!” Lin roared from her knees, staring wildly up at…
Nothing that Kya could see.
And suddenly, Lin slumped bonelessly to the side.
Kya scrambled from the bed, flailing for whether to turn on the lights or try to shake her awake, or let her sleep or bring her back gently, or…
She knelt in front of Lin, close enough to touch, but holding back, just a moment longer.
Lin stirred, and slammed the heel of her hand against her forehead, pressing and groaning.
Kya leaned forward and tried to pull the hand away from Lin’s face. Lin resisted, seeming to press even harder.
“Lin, Lin, it’s Kya, honey. Please wake up. You’re having a nightmare. Can you talk to me? Please let me take your hand.”
Suddenly, Lin went limp, the hand dropping away from her face for a moment. She grimaced and curled into a tight ball, bringing her fingers back up to her forehead.
Kya reached down to try to tug her up by the shoulders.
Lin gasped. Her eyes snapped open, and Kya could see the confusion and fear in her face.
“Lin, it’s just me, just Kya. You’re at home. We’re together. Can you sit up? Do you want a light? Feel your pajamas.”
She helped Lin put her back to the side of the bed, then wriggled around on her knees to reach Lin’s nightstand. The familiar meteorite was heavy and cold in her hands, but she knew it would feel different to Lin.
She could tell the instant Lin felt the rock with her bending, not just her hands. Her eyes widened, but her shoulders slumped, and her head fell back against the bed.
Lin let her hands fall to her lap, cradling the meteorite in her two cupped hands.
Her voice was hoarse when she whispered, “It’s just a phantom pain.”
Kya brushed back her hair, reassuring her, “Pain is pain. Pain is real. Even if he isn’t here to hurt you, ever again.”
“Why does it still hurt? He’s dead. I know he’s dead,” she said, her eyes fixed on the ceiling.
Kya caressed her cheek. “I don’t know. Maybe think about what Korra’s touch felt like when she restored your bending.”
Lin inhaled and held her breath. She opened her mouth and released the breath without exhaling, exactly. Kya pulled back to let Lin lift her head from the mattress.
“Did I ever tell you that it felt like your dad gave me a kiss? He used to do that when I was very little, and that’s what Korra’s touch felt like.” Her watery eyes looked down to the rock in her hand. It shimmered and undulated, changing shapes in a steady rhythm.
Kya reached out her hand again to rub Lin’s elbow.
“Then let his phantom kiss wipe away the phantom’s pain.”
She leaned up on her knees, and placed a gentle kiss on her brow.

DEVASTATED that we didn't get more interactions between the gaang's grandkids. Like I wanna know what their relationships are. Do they know each other? Are they friends? Or is it more of a ' our grandparents kinda saved and fundamentally reshaped the world together and forged indestructible bonds in the fire of war and trauma so it would be really awkward if we weren't at least nice to each other' type thing?
I want a scene of them all hanging out, man.... so bad...
Like imagine mixing the unbridled chaos that are the Airkids, the absolute feral energy of the Beifong babies with poor general Iroh the Spineless having to somehow keep them all in check.
Send them all on a life changing fieldtrip i say!

Hi there. Love your blog. I read your ask about how you'd rewrite Aang and Katara's kids and thought it was pretty interesting. Is there also anything you'd rewrite about Tenzin's kids?
Hi, thank you so much! I tried to start this yesterday and the app crashed so let’s do this again.
*** There’s not much I’d change about the airkids, I think they’re fine but here are some of my headcanons during and after LoK:
Jinora I think is the most developed of the 4 and the one I like the most. I have a ficlet of Katara telling her a story from the war because she seems to be really interested in Katara’s stories in canon. I think Katara’s probably her favorite person to be around, after Kai obviously, because she likes learning so much. I think she’s virtuous and studious but not too uptight like Tenzin. Leading the new air nation and taking up Tenzin’s responsibilities would be natural for her and she’ll most likely train the new avatar too. If you’ve read Yangchen, I basically see her as Jetsun. As for her siblings, I think Ikki annoys her constantly and follows her around. Meelo seems to be more independent as he gets older and Rohan is probably her favorite sibling because of the age difference.
Ikki, I think is loud and attention deprived. comes with the middle child territory. I headcanon that she grows close to Katara after following Jinora around and listening to her stories. I think Katara would influence her after some stern talking to and she would take after Katara and Kya’s example the most, helping people around the world. I think she’d be really outgoing and would be the first to move out of Air Temple Island. A true nomad in every sense, but she’ll always come back home for holidays and festivals. Her and Meelo are airball rival captains and she takes physical air nomad activities very seriously. She’ll let Jinora lead but she dominates the space whenever she comes back home.
Meelo, I liked the least during the show but as he got older, he got less annoying and more mature! I think like the comics he’d spend the most time with Bumi, exploring the world particularly air nomad temples. He’d probably go live in one after Rohan grows up and take some new airbenders with him. I headcanon him to be a wise crazy elder like a mix of King Bumi and the guru from ATLA. Also, comes back home for major holidays like Ikki where they try to beat each other in air ball tournaments.
Rohan, I know the least about because he’s a baby. If I had to give him a personality, I would give him Tenzin’s canon one. He’d be very particular and studious helping Jinora out a lot. He probably looks up to her because she’s the eldest and she finds him endearing. He’d probably be really big into archiving and training the new air nation, more than sports and festivities.

i dunno just a lil bit tired considering the only lok content we got this year, for the 10th anniversary, was a comic anthology of mostly old stories from fcbd and mostly featuring the airkids as opposed to the krew. and now it seems as though our only impending content is a “korra era movie” as a possibility slated for release after a different avatar series that i am wary of at best. Also sorta makes me sad since there is so much left to explore in korra’s era and with all the characters that was never explored due to lack of opportunity in the show’s run time. idk just felt like saying this

Kuma and Lin's relationship part 1
Kuma is a total simp and will shower Lin with gifts and praises and lot's of hugs.
Lin loves Kuma's broad and strong figure and sometimes loses concentration at work looking at her muscles while they are discussing a case.
Lin and Kuma both know how to fluster each other but they only do it in private or with friends. Never at work (or at least not in front of most officers)
They both work hard, a bit too hard and they tend to stay and sleep on the station where Mako and Asha (Kuma's protégé {like Mako to Lin}) have to take care of them.
Kuma has sharp canines and loves to play bite Lin just to annoy her (Lin secretly likes it and prefers when Kuma leaves marks)
Lin loves to touch Kuma's facial scar, it reminds her of her own.
Kuma cuddles Lin and helps her if she has nightmares especially about Amon.
Kuma absolutely loves Naga and the rest of the gaangs animals. She loves that Lin hides snacks for them in their pockets and she started doing the same.
The Airkids are torned, Jinora and Meelo prefer Lin, while Ikki and Rohan favor Kuma. (At the end of the day Lin is their hero though)

Contrary to popular belief, Kuma is primarily soft in bed unless Lin wants her to get rough (or she's in a possessive mood)
Kuma has only ever gotten pegged and it's by Lin. She's the only one she trusts with something so delicate and private for her. They absolutely love it and Lin likes when she controls Kuma physically.
Lin turns into absolute putty when Kuma touches her, even when it's not sexual.
Lin can be VERY bratty and stubborn, especially in bed. Kuma loves to break her and make her beg. After recking her Kuma showers her in kisses and cuddles.
Before Kuma transfered back to Republic City she bent Lin over on her desk. Lin did the same to her not long after Kuma got integrated into her department.

9: Were there any alternate versions of this fic?
Yes! Initially there was just going to be a little bit about "Lin's boyfriend" but I decided against it and developed a whole an OC instead. I was also going to give each of the airkids a more independent role in the fic, but once I got to writing it, I realized I didn't want to spend my energy writing them when I could just focus on Lin and Tenzin. Kya was supposed to have a bigger role in the fic but she isn't going to anymore. There def was a Linumi angle in there, but I talked myself out of that one lol.
10: Why did you choose this pairing for this particular story?
This pairing? Lmao. This pairing was the reason why I ever got into the fandom. I read my first Linzin fic in Sept 2020 and by December, I had this whole idea panned out but no desire to write it. Eventually, once I felt like I had enough practice writing, I started typing and posting this fic little by little. I still have some ways to go though. Linzin is like my start and end. It's such a special pairing and there's just so many different ways you can write them in.
Anyway, I wholeheartedly wanna thank you for sending in this ask. I've been feeling a lot like people only ever venture into my inbox for requesting stuff with no regard for me as a writer and that's not a good feeling. So I always appreciate these little ask games immensely.

Jinora sneaked Kai into the house and got caught by Lin? Tenzin and Pema aren't finding out about this.
Ikki and Meelo broke something while running around? Lin helps them replace it/fix it enough for Tenzin to think that he broke it.
Rohan airbent a cup of tea out of Tenzin's hand? Lin picks the boy up and starts being all cute with him so Tenzin doesn't have a chance to get mad.

Lin and the air babies head cannons?
Okay so this got out of hand a little but:
- Lin is very awkward around them first, because the only child she’s ever been around is Su
- Jinora is the first one she warms up to, because she’s quiet and just has her nose stuck in a book all the time
- Tenzin must have mentioned about the book exchanges they used to have, because Jinora starts asking questions about books she’s reading from the Island’s library
- She starts recommending books for Jinora to read
- When she’s older (and when Linzin have struck up their friendship again), the three of them have a book club
- Ikki takes a while for Lin to warm up to. She asks way too many questions that Lin just doesn’t know how to answer without being mean.
- One day, Ikki is sick when she and Kya are watching the kids and Kya is nowhere to be found
- Lin begrudgingly cleans up the mess, but the girl is feverish and clingy and whiny
- She asks for a cuddle and a story, so Lin obliges, sitting down in Aang’s old rocking chair, telling Ikki a child-friendly version of her detective days and the girl falls asleep on her
- That’s the moment Ikki worms her way into Lin’s heart
- Meelo is loud and hyper and disgusting, everything she hates about kids, and she tries not to have too much to do with him at first
- But she kind of likes the hero worship
- She also enjoys indulging in pranking the cloudkids with him
- As he grows up, he decides he wants to become the first airbending police officer and Lin is so immensely proud
- She gives him advice and goes to his graduation ceremony and she can’t stop smiling the entire time
- I hc Rohan as a waterbender and he always feels like the odd one out growing up
- He’s quiet and studious and waterbends like an airbender. Lin likes to show him some earthbending techniques so he can learn to incorporate those into his bending style
- She absolutely loves reading stories to all of the kids, and she’s amazing at the voices
- They all adore Aunt Lin’s cuddles but she swears them to secrecy about it so that nobody can know she’s a giant softie
- Ikki is the first one to call her Aunt Lin and Lin wells up the first time she hears it
- The first time Ikki gets her heart broken, Tenzin has to stop her from hunting the little shit down

Hide (fluff)
Pema perked up her ears at the whispering. People like to pretend the Air Temple was a place of quiet contemplation, of subtleties and measured endeavor.
In her experience, it was anything but.
Between the constant practice out in the courtyards, the endless classes and lectures, the persistent chores, people were always so busy that they didn’t spend much effort at being quiet.
Plus, she had kids. And somehow, having Opal joining the island just seemed to give her one more kid to track. Whispers were almost always bad news.
She had no qualms about employing her own training to search as silently as she could for the little sneaks. And there, behind the washrooms, she found the group. She just crossed her arms and leaned against the building, waiting for them to notice her.
Of course, it was Jinora who did. She looked slightly abashed, but waved her mother over.
“Hey, maybe mom can help.”
That caught Pema’s attention.
“What’s going on back here?”
Meelo hopped up from beside Rohan. “Aunt Kya asked us to hide this box for her, but when we came out here-“
“We were already hiding this box for Aunt Lin,” supplied Opal.
Pema looked at the strikingly similar boxes. She had to fight to keep her face calm. “I see. Well, did either one give you any other instructions?”
All four heads shook no.
“Did either one say anything about what to do after you’d hidden them?”
“Lin didn’t,” Jinora shrugged.
Rohan said, “Aunt Kya neither.”
Pema finally let her smile show. She waved everyone to bend their heads close, and she started whispering.

Once dinner was over, Pema sent Tenzin and Bumi out to light the fire pit. The kids were marshaled to collect the dishes. They collected everything except Kya and Lin’s bowls. Jinora looked back from the kitchen with a little “oops,” and used her bending to waft the two bowls toward the kitchen.
The women found small envelopes in the vacant spots under their bowls. With a glance at each other, they opened their envelopes.
A brief moment later, they each ran out of the room in different directions.

The family was reclining around the fire pit when Kya and Lin each appeared from opposite directions. Everything fell silent. They looked at the group, and both spotted their box, sitting on a small stool.
Right beside another box.
They looked at each other. The family saw the blushes and the shy smiles.
Pema couldn’t help it any longer.
“We were not about to hide those boxes if you thought you could hide your intentions from us. Get over here and do what you came to do.”
Kya and Lin approached each other and took each other’s hand. They walked over to the stool and each picked up the box they had entrusted to the kids.
They looked at each other.
“Will you marry me?”

TELL ME ANYTHING BUCHEF AND THEIR RAT KID RELATED PLEASE PLEASE I AM A STARVING CHILD DYING OF STARVATION AND NEED THEM TO LIVE
Ok so the kid comes from southern water tribe immigrants. Whether she's a waterbender is up to you. She ended up on the street relatively early in her life. She became a skilled pickpocket and scammer. She has the emotional maturity of an autistic racoon. She lives in the sewers and often wanders the docks and shipyard.
She tries to pickpocket Bumi and Chef while they were out getting supplies for their houseboat. Of course they do catch onto her and chef grabs her like this:
She does bite him tho, but she's so malnourished that she ends up tuckering herself out very quickly. They do end up taking her back home and nursing her back to health. She greatly enjoys Chef's food and tells herself that she's only staying for the food, but she slowly warms up to the two nice old guys who have probably shown her more kindness than she has experienced in months, maybe even years.
I think she bonds with Chef first. He's quieter and just lets her do her own thing while he reads a newspaper or a cookbook. Also he bribes her with food. No competition. I think Chef is also more used to 'difficult children, having known Huan and Kuvira since they were small kids.
Bumi is good with kids, don't get me wrong. Bur I think him being so outwardly friendly and outgoing to her may make her suspicious. She probably is very surprised when she learns he used to be a high up in the military. She's like 'really? This dude? The one with the squeaky bunny slippers???' I think they eventually bond as well and he helps her reconnect with her southern water tribe roots. He takes her ice dodging for her 15th birthday and hes super proud of her when she gets through it.
Katara ADORES her immediately. She's so happy to have ANOTHER grandkid. The rat is super interested in the Gaang stories and thinks Katara is super cool. Similair with Kya, rat thinks Kya is just the coolest (which does cause Bumi severe psychological damage, thanks for asking)
She dislikes Tenzin tho. Calls him a stiff. But she gets along with the airkids well enough. She does call Jinora a nerd, though she does occasionally borrow (steal) Jinora's books. But her Ikki and Meelo are chaos incarnate.
Her, Kai, Mako and Bolin gave this unspoken 'we were orphans and the world is cruel and we are very traumatised. High five' alliance. Maybe her and Kai have this passive pickpocketing competition going on, you can't prove anything. Mako is very aware of this and disapproves vehemently. Bolin has been pickpicketed like 8 times because there is no loyalty among thieves.

BONUS
[ID: the first image represents Azula firebending a dragon for her niece Izumi. They are sort of sitting in the ground and Izumi has an oustretched hand towards the dragon. The dragon is made of white and blue blame. Izumi appears to be around four years old. The two wear more or less traditional Fire Nation clothing.
The second image represents Sokka, his age unclear but it's around 35+, with the cloud babies. Bumi, aged 9 is on his back and is wielding Sokka's boomerang. On top of Sokka and Bumi stands Kya, aged 3, who seems to showing her tongue cheekily and waterbending above Sokka's head. Sokka has one arm outstretched to hold Tenzin, aged 1 or less, who has accidentally airbended with a sneeze. They're all wearing Water Tribe garb.
The third image depicts Kya and Bumi with the airkids, all wearing traditional Air Nomad clothing. Kya holds Rohan, aged 4-5, in one her arms, while with the other she waterbends at Bumi, who is thus locked in a block of ice. Ikki, aged 11-12, clings to Kya's arm rather stupidly. Meelo, aged 9-10, seems to be hidden behind Bumi with a set of water balloons ready to attack. Jinora, aged 14-15, stands on the far right and with finger she is held by Rohan while her other hand is holding onto a book that should say, in Chinese Hanzi, "Spirit World", implying that they are all talking a walk in the Spirit World.
The fourth image shows Lin, aged 40, with her hair not yet fully gray, taking care of Suyin's army of kids. She is, as everyone else, wearing Zaofu robes, and she seems to be in a state of distress as Opal, age uncertain, clings to her body in a hug, and her cables stretch out to capture both Wei and Wing who used earthbending to launch into the air and are trying to cause mischief. Indeed, on the left Wei is earthbending at Baatar Jr who seems to be deep into reading. His book only spells out a name. On the right side, Wing is just dangling happily, Kuvira on the far right looking at him with a smile as she stretches, perhaps for a dance recital. Just at Lin's right leg, there is also Huan, crying out in despair because Lin appears to have destroyed his sand creation.
BONUS description: There are five people. In the middle, the only ones unblurred, are Suki and Lin. Lin is around 10-11 and seems to be unhappy with the Kyoshi Warrior make up Suki is putting upon her fast. In the front in both sides, blurred, are Ty Lee sprinting after 4 years old Suyin who appears to be stopped by Mai, who towers over her. The colors are brighter in the front than in the back. END ID]

Got any korrasami headcannons?
Ok you probably didn’t want or ask for this, but here are my 10 fave headcanons (with illustrations because I usually draw them)
Jello’s Headcanons
1. Small Spoon Korra- Korra likes to be the small spoon, she rarely trusts anyone to keep her safe, but Asami takes the burden off her shoulders a little bit.
2. Korra visits Asami at her workshop: both of them lead busy lives but Korra will make a pitstop when she knows Asami is working late
3. Korra isn’t a morning person, but she’ll get up early to make Asami breakfast: pretty self explanatory, she simps for her gf like the rest of us, and Asami always forgets to eat breakfast
4. Asami wasn’t a dog person, until she met Naga: again, self explanatory, I think she never realised she would like a dog until she met Naga, who she pampers
5. They both have touch as their love language: Korra pretty clearly loves physical touch (whether its the Airkids or any of the other people in her life), Asami is also secretly a touch person, (@xaibaugrove has a great post on this that convinced me)
6. Korra is the “homemaker” of the two: As much as I love Asami I can’t see her being very good at cooking and cleaning (those were never necessary in her life), Korra takes on more of the responsibilities of the household because she knows Asami can be busy and forgetful. Korra is also neater of the two
7. Korra’s a little more feminine and Asami is a little more masculine than some of the fandom makes them out to be: gender/gender expression/gender identity is all weird and dumb to be honest. However, I have seen people in the fandom make Korra out to be super masculine, and Asami to be super femme, which I don’t always agree with. I see them as a product of their environment, Asami having to be the very public daughter of a famous socialite (tending toward the outward gender expression expected of her) and Korra always having to be the strong warrior Avatar, who is practical in her clothing and appearance (typically associated as more masculine). I think there should be a bit more wiggle room for these definitions, Korra might like makeup she’s just never been exposed to it in a white lotus compound where everyone is 20 years older and Asami might love to wear power suits in the boardroom, who knows. This is just my personal headcanon, whatever makes sense to you is what you should follow. This post does a good job summing up my sentiments
8. Asami proposes: she doesn’t want to lose Korra again without showing her how much she loves her
9. They’d have kids: Maybe I’m just gay and soft for wlw families, but I think they would have kids (somehow), at least a few because they would know how lonely it was as single children. Korra could have them, Asami could have them, they could each have one, a spirit could give babies to them, either way I think they’d have kids and make good mums.
10. They’d live long lives: I think they definitely could live long lives, despite all the hardship.
