European airlines urge EU to push for more green fuel
Several leading European airlines urged EU authorities to follow the US lead and push for increased green fuel production on Wednesday, according to Euractiv.
The European Union passed a law requiring airlines to start phasing in sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) on routes departing from EU airports last year as part of the fight against climate change. SAF is expected to account for 2 per cent of the total fuel mix from next year, 6 per cent in 2030, before rising sharply to 70 per cent from 2050.
Airlines for Europe (A4E) stated that SAF production in Europe was lagging behind projects launched in the US and supported by Washington’s sweeping Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) plan. Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr claimed:
In the US, the SAF production is highly incentivised. We need those solutions here in Europe.

Boeing 737-9 Re-launch Celebration Spoiled When Corks Prematurely Pop Out of Champagne Bottles
Tumblr media
Boeing executives gathered to celebrate the last of the 737-9s returning to flight status. However, in the midst of the self-congratulating speech making, corks from the Dom Perignon champagne unexpectedly popped out of the bottles, the contents sucked out of the bottles as if they were passengers on a 737-9.
Winslow Stegman, Associate Vice President for Boeing Celebrations, called it a double tragedy. “We not only lost a lot of the champagne, but by the time we cleaned up the guests who had been sprayed, the champagne was kind of flat and no longer chilled to 45 degrees fahrenheit. I mean, who wants to drink Dom Perignon at 53 degrees?”
A Boeing spokesperson had harsh words for the Dom Perignon bottlers. “What kind of sloppy operation produces a product that can suddenly have part of it just pop out? We might sue.”
At publication time, reports were that the wine distributor is a subsidiary of the pan-european airplane manufacturer AirBus.
