Carol Danvers x Female Reader 2,082 words
You go and tap out your Airman
"Today's the day," a boy, walking the fine line of being regarded as a man, slapped Carol over the shoulders with a giant grin on his face. "You excited, Danvers?" Carol smacked his arms off and his ever so contagious grin presented itself onto her own lips.
"Course I am," she smiled, "anyone coming to tap you out, Small." Graduation day: one of the top things that got Carol through the eight and half weeks of rigorous training.
"The whole family's coming," he shrugged with a proud smile, "you?" Carol couldn't help her fast growing smile as she thought about it.
"Just Y/n," she smirked looking down to fold a shirt. The boy raised his eyebrows and tilted his head to get a better look at his comrade before chuckling at her, teasing her, it was all the same.
"Ohh the famous lover, do we finally get to meet her?" Another joined in and Carol glared at him.
"I hope to steer her away as far as possible from you lot," she teased, "especially Lepley over there." The boy named Lepley turned to look as he heard his name. "Yeah, I'm talking about you, pretty boy." She nodded before he sauntered over.
"What're we on about?" Lepley questioned.
"Carol's girl," King replied half-heartedly, you had been the topic of many conversations, and still he didn't know if you really existed.
Lepley shook his head, "Danvers does not have a girl, there is no way," there was a chorus of groans from the rest and put his hands up in defence, "I know, I know, we've been over this before, but even if we say you do have a wife there is absolutely no way she is as pretty as you say she is."
"Awwh someone jealous, Lepley? You'll have your first kiss soon, don't you worry about it." She lightly smacked his jaw twice and winked at him before leaving the laundry room with her pile of neatly folded clothes. In less than five hours you'd be back in her arms again. She couldn't wait to see you, were you as excited as she was? She hoped so.
—––—
Today was the day: Carol's graduation day. The last eight and a half weeks had been some of the loneliest days you had experienced and you couldn't be more excited to finally be in her arms once again. You had been up early this morning, preparing for your trip, making sure you'd be on time. Carol's favourite sundress hung from the door as you did your makeup from the bathroom, applying clear mascara today because you knew there would be waterworks. You raced around the house as you got ready and your cat, Buttons, and Carol's dog, Rufus, sat watching you with lazy curiosity.
After an hour, you were mostly ready, your makeup was done, you were in the dress, and you had just finished your breakfast. You collected all of your things into your arms and struggled your way through the front door and toward your car. You made sure to pack Carol's favourite snacks, as well as Maria's, into the car and a few pillows; it was going to be a long drive. The driver's door slammed shut and your hands rested on the steering wheel; you were definitely forgetting something. What were you forgetting? With a sigh, you left the car and went back into the house, your eyes searching.
Buttons ran at you, screaming. "I've already fed you, you don't need any more food, round man," you muttered as you knelt down to stroke him. He brushed himself against your leg and that was when you noticed your shoes, or, more importantly, your lack of shoes. You had left the house in slippers. Your eyes flicked to the clock hanging on the wall and they widened. As quickly as you could, you ran upstairs and filed through your shoes and your sock drawer. Hopping down the stairs as you struggled to put them on, you tied your laces at the bottom and grabbed your keys from the table before walking around the corner toward the door, and that was when you stopped.
"Buttons, no," you stated firmly as he sat by the door, tail wagging sinisterly from side to side. Rufus trotted in, noticing the commotion, and his ears perked up at your tone.
After a few lost minutes, you made it to your car and, finally, the engine rumbled to life. And, as you backed out the driveway, Buttons crouched happily over a plate of leftover chicken. He was round with good reason.
—––—
It was nearly time to go. Carol could feel the constriction of her chest as she heard the hum of the audience just outside, full of family, friends and loved ones. Carol glanced to her side and caught Maria's eye with a grin.
"I'm coming to tap you out," Carol reminded her and she nodded gratefully.
"Y/n better have my snacks," Maria warned with a raised brow and Carol shook her head with a smirk. She was so glad her two favourite people were best friends too.
"She'll have them, she knows how cranky you get," Carol teased earning a light slap to the back from her friend. "What? It's true," she looked up at the clock and Maria followed her gaze.
"Time to go."
It was dark outside and a cool breeze hit her bare skin as she joined her flight for the airman's run. She could hear the crowd screaming and howling as the first signs of them appeared. They chanted in time with one another and she struggled to suppress her excited grin, everyone was so happy to be there. When Carol passed the first group of people all she wanted to do was turn her head to see if you were there, but she couldn't and she continued to jog up to the end. Only when she turned around to jog back did she catch a glimpse of a familiar face; you were stood at the back of the small crowd, the rest of the audience sat in the high stands further back, and she felt her heart drum against her ribcage. Your heart was probably beating just as fast, albeit not taking part in any physical activities, Carol thought to herself; crowds were never your thing, and it made her feel special that you would join one in the hopes of seeing her.
When Carol made it back they all quickly turned to the changing rooms, to get out of their kit and into their uniforms. Maria bumped into her side as they changed.
"Did you see her?" She questioned Carol as she quickly pulled off her shirt. Carol nodded her head with a smirk. "I didn't," she frowned, "where was she?"
"Right at the back of the crowd toward the end," Carol answered and watched the shocked expression form on her best friend's face.
"I was looking at the stands," Maria told truthfully.
"I thought she'd be there too," Carol chuckled and shook her head with a smile before focusing on getting ready.
—––—
You watched them disappear into the distance, the screams and shouts of the people around you never faltered, and you were directed to the spouse orientation. Your heart was pounding inside of your chest as you listened to the man with the crowd of other spouses. It was still early in the morning and you could feel the chill of the crisp air against your cheeks and skin. You hadn't bothered with taking a jumper or anything to keep you warm, knowing that it would soon warm up and that you would have no where to put it until the end when you got back to your car. So you stood there, arms folded over your chest and hands wrapped around your arms, listening.
After the briefing, everyone began to fill out the stands and so you followed suit. You sat quite high up wanting to be able to get a better view of the whole field, which meant a better view of where Carol would be. A boy sat swinging his legs beside you, a smile on his face as he looked out onto the field, at the aircraft in the background. You followed his gaze and studied the aircraft, they were huge, massive hunks of metal machinery that Carol climbs into willingly. You shivered. She was a lot braver than you were and that was something that you loved. You loved everything about her, the good and the bad, she was your best friend and your lover. Nothing could have prepared you for Carol and, in a way, you were glad for it.
A man stood with a microphone, entertaining the crowd as they waited for the airmen to come out. By now, the sun was out and you welcomed it as it warmed your skin. The man declared that they were just around the corner and the crowd erupted into shouts and a round of applause. A band came out first and the crowd whooped for them, it was starting. The energy around you was electric and you couldn't help the grin that was forming on your face. You felt ecstatic when you heard the first beats from the band. You joined in with the clapping when the man announced the first flight.
You watched as each flight came marching onto the field in an orderly fashion, and cheered for every one of them, your cheering growing louder as it got closer and closer to Carol's flight.
"Flight 616!"
You cheered, louder than you had before; everyone around you was here for the same reason, so there was no reason to be embarrassed. No one cared, you were meant to be loud here. And that was exactly what you did.
You squinted at the sun as you shaded your eyes with your hand, all you wanted was to was see Carol. You scanned her flight in search for her and when your eyes finally landed on her your heart swelled with pride and joy. This was her dream, and she had it; every day she worked hard and it had finally paid off. She stood tall and proud in her uniform and it nearly brought tears to your eyes. Not yet, you told yourself, save the tears for later.
Your eyes scanned for Maria when her flight was announced and your heart swelled with just as much pride. You then watched proudly as they both receive their badges and watched as they saluted. It was a long time after that you were then able to go out onto the field; people rushed from the stands and children ran to find their person. You walked down after them, careful to not miss a step on the steep stairs, and when you finally made it to the ground your heart was threatening to beat out of your chest. You were so close, she was so close. You were quick as you walked to her flight, slowing down to scan everyone's faces for hers. Your breath hitched in your throat when you saw the side of her face, facing forward and unmoving, and you quickly moved to the other side of the flight and stepped into her sight.
Some unknown force came over you and you bounded into her arms. Strong arms wrapped around your waist and pressed you close into her as she rocked you back and forth, waddling out of formation. The two of you stayed quiet as you embraced each other, making up for the many, many days you hadn't been able to touch each other, and silent salty tears began to leak from your eyes. Carol's hands moved up to your shoulders and pushed you back so she could see you, comforting blue eyes searched your own and a hand rested against your jaw as she brought her lips to each cheek, kissing away your tears, before her lips landed on your own. You hummed at the feeling and sunk into her touch, you had gone for far too long without that feeling.
Once, the kiss was over you settled back into her embrace, arms wrapped around each other. "I've missed you so much," Carol whispered her breath tickling your ear and you let out a deep breath.
"I've missed you too," you mumbled softly. "We should go find Maria." Carol tightened her grip around you.
"No, just a little longer."
