Of course, he would get sick. As if being exhausted fucking constantly wasn’t enough. He just had to overwork to this point. Your stupid fucking wet cat of a husband, doing stupid wet cat of a husband things like being outside while it’s fucking raining and thinking he’ll wake up fine the next day, and on top of that—wait, what were you doing again?

You heard a string of coughs from the bedroom.

Oh, yeah. You were making Lemon Tonic.

For the both of you because he got you both sick.

You coughed into your elbow and looked into the fridge, grabbing a lemon and a bottle of liquor. You placed it on the counter and grabbed a pot from the cabinet. You sniffled as you filled it with water and sat it on the stove. You sliced up half of the lemon (almost cut yourself), put it in the pot and turned on the eye. You opened the bottle and poured a reasonable amount of liquor in there and put it back in the fridge. You left it to boil and went into the bedroom to check on your sick cat-like husband.

You poked your head in, “How you feelin’?”

“Like shit.” He mumbled. You made your way to the bed and flopped down on it.

“Same,” You grabbed a tissue and blew the shit out of your nose, “I wonder who’s fault that is?” You elbowed him in the side. He grunted and shoved your arm away. You started to laugh, but it agitated your lungs, and you ended up in a coughing fit.

After catching a gleam of that bright light, you checked the nightstand for any painkillers and sighed when finding they weren’t there. You begrudgingly got back up and went to get it from the bathroom. You grabbed another box of tissues as well, since Shouta was making a snot rag mountain of his own. You sat it on the nightstand and went back into the kitchen, turned off the eye, then grabbed two water bottles. Quickly dropping them off in the bedroom, you returned to the kitchen and grabbed two mugs, then filled them with the Cold Killing Lemon Tonic.

“Alright,” You sat in the bed and handed him his mug, “Try to drink this quickly.” You took a sip and burnt your tongue, but mama didn’t raise no bitch, so you kept going.

Shouta stared at you for a long time before finally drinking the Lemon Tonic like a shot.

“Okay show off,” You grab the painkillers and water, “you’ll be needing this.” You swallow yours without water like a damn boss, but still drank a bit after to make sure the pills went down.

Shouta again only stared as he did the same sans the after the fact water.

You glared at him a little.

“Now what?” He put the water bottle against his face, “didn’t you say this was sort of a miracle drink?”

“I didn’t say miracle drink,” you got underneath the covers and tucked him in as well, “I said Exorcising Drink.”

Shouta blinked, “What?”

“This drink will literally exorcise the sickness out of you.”

“…”

You gave him a Cheshire grin. “By sweating.”

“Are you fucking kidding me?”

“Nope! Now shut up and sweat!” You tucked the covers under your chin even snugglier, “Don’t worry. The sickness will come at you full force, so it’ll probably knock you out pretty quickly.”

He was quiet for a moment, “Remind me to never eat anything from your family again.”

“Yeah sure, no more peach cobbler for you then.”

“I take it back.”

“That’s what I thought. Now, shut up and sweat!”

“I told ya it would work,” You danced around Shouta in the kitchen. “But…”

It was the next day and the both of you were back to full health. Shouta didn’t seem all too pleased about it, though.

“So, why do you look like you’re pissed?”

He groaned, “I have to go back to work,” He shuttered, “back to night patrol.”

You laughed, “Who said we were going back to our jobs,” You nudged him, “we can play out this sickness a little longer.”

He grabbed you by the waist and gave you that maniacal smile that you loved, “I’d like that.” You grabbed him by the cheeks and gave him a quick peck.

“Great! You can take me on a date!”

He gave you a blank stare.

“…or chill at home and call that a date?”

He, like the gentlemen that he was, escorted you to the couch to put on something to watch while he grabbed the snacks.

“Next time we’re going out to eat though!”

Lemon tonic is the truth.

I posted this image last night from MHA 412 — with Izuku down on the ground, literally in All Might’s shadow — and HAD to talk about it more. See, Izuku is remembering himself in All Might’s shadow, but that’s not how the scene actually looked. Izuku is the one imagining that shadow. Nobody is thinking or expecting him to be All Might 2.0 except himself.

Way back in Chapter 97, All Might thinks how Izuku WAS walking in his shadow, but isn’t any longer. And that fact excites him — by the time we get to Kamino, All Might doesn’t WANT Izuku in his shadow. However, All Might doesn’t tell this to Izuku.

When Izuku offers OFA to Mirio, All Might doesn’t interrupt OR say anything to Izuku afterwards. He won’t demand that Izuku be like him or keep OFA. (Also notice Mirio saying Izuku would be sad without his quirk.)

All Might is proud when Izuku learns parallel processing from Endeavor and masters Blackwhip, something All Might never had to contend with and that is unique to Izuku. (Also notice the flashback to All Might saying Izuku earned OFA by being heroic.)

But Izuku doesn’t know any of this. What about when All Might DOES talk to Izuku? WELL IT DOESN’T MATTER BECAUSE IZUKU DOESN’T UNDERSTAND! Going back to the ultimate moves lesson, All Might advises Izuku that he’s stuck trying to emulate All Might (which is the same thing Gran Torino told him before). But our big-brained chosen one MC [affectionate] STILL STRUGGLED FIGURING OUT WHAT ALL MIGHT MEANT. It was genuinely hard for Izuku to grasp All Might’s intent.

You’d think this moment would give Izuku a clue, but no. Izuku’s moves continue to be derived from All Might, and he continues to think he’s “not just copying.” It culminates in the Dark Deku/Villain Hunt arc with Bakugo calling Izuku an All Might wannabe, and Izuku telling 1A that they can’t join his fight because they can’t keep up with the likes of him, Nana, All Might, and Shigaraki. Since then, Izuku has promised not to do things on his own, but we haven’t gotten an update on the idolization front.

Izuku’s idolization and imitation of All Might remains strong even after hearing it directly from Gran Torino and All Might and Bakugo and 1A. It’s obvious to everyone, including All Might, but it’s just … not … to Izuku. What’s truly hilarious is that Izuku will talk back to the vestiges — he mouths off to Second and Fourth, and he withstands Nana’s challenge to kill her grandson (twice as of 412!!). Izuku also challenges Tomura, and even All for One. But not All Might.

After everything, Izuku STILL envisions himself in All Might’s shadow from the moment All Might said he could be a hero and offered OFA to him. For all his status and his “triumphs,” Izuku sees himself as a nerd who needs a quirk — who would be sad without a quirk just like Mirio was — and THAT is what Izuku has yet to overcome. Izuku has never heard anyone tell him very bluntly and directly that he CAN be a hero without a quirk. (And that kind of blunt communication is exactly what he needs because, well, he’s a little slow to change his self-perception. Remember when Toga said she liked him?)

Even though Izuku has seen quirkless Mirio protect Eri…and watched Iron Might and practically quirkless Aizawa fighting…and he knows quirkless Ragdoll helped with planning, and La Brava is playing her role as a computer expert (unrelated to her quirk)…Izuku is going to need to hear, plainly and bluntly, that he IS a hero without OFA. He’s BEEN a hero. He earned OFA “fair and square” in the first place BECAUSE he was a hero. If All Might was a madman for fighting quirkless and being willing to sacrifice his life to live his dream, then Izuku will have to be the craziest hero ever to put his quirk, his life, AND his dream on the line. I’m hoping we get some blunt verbal Izuku appreciation from All Might, Bakugo, 1A, and others so Izuku KNOWS, once and for all (ha!) he is a beloved friend and hero without One For All. Then he can go on to save Tomura (and the world).

• Every time anyone’s birthday comes around, Shota lets his child light the candles

• Makes the mistake of bringing his kid to work one day, the kid finds out about todoroki’s quirk and stays by his side all day

• Honestly as annoying as the habits might be, Aizawa loves watching his little one get super sleepy and point in the general direction of a fire mumbling how pretty it is as he picks them up

Hawks (Keigo Takami)

• Highkey encourages his lil arsonist

• Endeavour’s biggest fan 2.0

• Has definitely accidentally set some of their own feathers alight before

• Honestly, he would probably light the fire with his child so there’s multiple fires

• Has to call into work because there was a fire incident and they BOTH need to grow back their feathers

• This child has the biggest candle collection ever

Mirko (Rumi Usagiyama)

• You can’t tell me that Mirko’s child wouldn’t want to burn the world

• I mean their mum is a badass are we surprised?

• Mirko actually found the little fires funny at first

• Until there was a massive blaze and the fire was hot enough to be blue

• That triggered something in mama and she’s putting it out immediately and holding her baby tight

• Rabbits and Fire don’t mix even without that trauma

• An electric fireplace has been bought so you can watch the flames without triggering anything bad

hii, so what do you think will happen to Deku?? ive been seeing soo many people on my tl saying that he'll end up quirkless and i know its not supposed to be like that but now idk anymore and with this last chapter i think he may end up quirkless which i hate btw. Anyways, what are your thots on this and where do you think the memory thing is going?

I'm sorry to say, but I've been a "Deku ends up quirkless" again truther for many years. To me, narratively, it just makes sense for the overall set-up of the main question of the manga: "Can I be a hero?" which has kept coming back in the endgame to come full circle.

In this story, we have learnt that all kinds of people can become heroes: people with "villain quirks" (like Shinsou), people with niche quirks (Aizawa, Monoma), people with troublesome quirks (Mirio), people who don't even use their quirks to be heroes (Hatsume). So I don't see how it would be only the MC, who needs specifically the greatest power in existence to be a hero. Deku needs to be able to face his quirkless middle school self and tell him with all confidence that "you can be a hero too".

To me, given how OFA evolved (the multiple quirks, the shortcuts to 100%, the short learning time), it would make sense if Deku's journey is not to be an empty chalice / tool for OFA, but OFA to be the tool for him to discover his own strengths (physical, mental, battle IQ, etc.), learn how to fight and help him to become a hero.

All Might even did the test run for an Armored Hero, mimicking the quirks of Class A and held up against AFO just as well if not better than people with quirks did. That plot is way more fitting for Deku who has actually been relentlessly studying his friends' quirks and with proto-Deku being an actual tech hero.

And on top of it, I think that Deku staying as ridiculously OP as he is would not give him a happy ending. OFA has no reason to exist once AFO (the quirk) is gone for good. Staying so OP would send Izuku down the road of All Might 2.0 - whether he wants to or not - with no life for himself. He's self-sacrificial enough that if he has the power to do everything, he will keep doing it and run to every corner of the world to help. It's isolating and that rat race is not what makes Izuku as a person happy.

He's someone who likes to hang out with his friends, stop to chat with people he saved and make candy apples to make them smile. That's where his true happiness lie imho.

The only question mark I have is because of Bakugou's ridiculous power-up. I've always thought Bakugou and Deku will end up around the same power level in the end (to keep the whole rivals thing going into post-franchise movies). Probably Shouto too, but that's less of a given.

But now, I'm not sure how Horikoshi will balance this. Bakugou is still nowhere near full-power Deku, but Armored Deku I don't think would be a credible rival to 2xAwakened Bakugou. So because of that, I can imagine, Hori will do the typical Hori-thing and won't commit and will go instead for some half-ass solution of nerfing Deku just so (e.g. having him keep Black Whip or have some asspull of the super strength fuse into his DNA, or get a quirk back from Tomura...) and then keep the fandom arguing who is stronger.

For me, the narratively more compelling story is to have Deku wake up quirkless after the big battle, after he saved the world and getting a few chapters of him getting back to his feet, and not a single soul question whether he still belongs to the hero course because of course he does. And then have absolutely everyone help him - to pitch in money to develop his armor and help him train and everyone (and especially Bakugou) treat him as absolute EQUAL and as an inspiration. And then have him graduate from UA as the first ever quirkless hero ever (and go on to work as hero partners with Bakugou probably).

Hori said that he has a lot of stuff he wants to draw after the war, and I think something like this would make sense.

Maybe you have noticed but in regards Izu...the narrative punish him(fuck you Hori) as well the majority of the fandom. Some Shinso fans think Izu should have come clean to Shinso about his quirk regarding the Izu vs Shinso 2.0 (coincidentally Aizawa stopped trained him after Shinso lost) and how in "Izu and Shinso are friends" Izu should pity Shinso as well we, the readers, while Izu's past is not seen as a big deal.

Some do say " yeah bk was meanie" and that if we are lucky.

I dont get why Shinso thought Izu(the kid who calls himself deku, not dekiru) whose quirk break his bones (of course UA does nothing. Has any teacher help anyone with their quirk?) And is mostly like from poor background is a golden child....

Meanwhile Shinso is really silent about BK.

What I'm trying to say here is...how Hori and the fandom ignore the ramifications of Izu's abuse or use to prop others characters.

"Shinso is a good guy bc he punched BK for Izu" cool...but why cant Izu do that? Why we dont get a word of what Izu thinks about that? Why he cant have closure?

(We see this in ships too. Ochako the super cool GF defeats BK...and Izu's pain is not important, not the healing! He has a gf duh🙄😒)

Yeah this is actually one of the biggest problems I have with the bakugo and izuku relationship/ rivalry or whatever it is (it's definitely not romantic or a friendship) izuku never gets to reflect or be the one to stand up for himself and some people say," oh it's IZUKUS character he doesn't realise that what bakugo has done is bad and he just forgives everyone who ever does him dirty" or something along those lines which really annoys me because ITS COMPLETELY FALSE. We can see in the first chapter after the suicide incident that izuku can actually feel negative emotions towards KATSUKI and that he actually knows and realises that what KATSUKI is doing is WRONG. However, because of hori's love for katsuki he can be never make him seem like the bad guy which 1) ruined katsukis development 2) ruined izukus and other characters development.

Concerning the shinso situation I don't think Izuku has to own up TO NOTHING!! No offence but hori made shinso kind of dumb when he chose that out of ALL hero class students you CHOOSE to target izuku who YOU CAN CLEARLY SEE DOESN'T SEEM TO FIT IN OR GO BY YOUR STUPID SILVER SPOON IDEOLOGY. Iam all for shinso and izuku being friends and I have talked about ways how to change the narrative so izuku and shinso's interactions can make sense in the narrative but yeah idk what's going on with hori.

Lastly, when it comes to izuku and his backstory the fandom mainly ignores it because it's not consistently brought up as something that affected izuku even though we can clearly see it did. Hori also stated that he wished he didn't make bakugo as mean and you can clearly see him try and undermine bakugos actions by making him think about izuku and only izuku also the fandom will eat anything that's BKDK which they think is a better version of saskue and Naruto but in reality this is a toxic wish version.

Ok, I'm sure it's been said before, but I'm going to assume Deku and Co. don't know Tomura is still kicking, just screaming inside AFO's head right now. So, wouldn't it be fun if, during the fight, Aizawa is protecting one of the students in some way and a casual "You're so cool, Eraserhead." slips out of the AFO amalgamation's mouth? Then Deku decides he's going in for Mindscape Battle 2.0 cuz "Tomura's still in there!"

Friday Fic Recs

I'm back with more BNHA fic recs, I have read hundreds of Quirkless Vigilante Izuku fics and well, I enjoyed a lot of them. In fact, my first fic posted to AO3 was a quirkless vigilante Izuku one shot. So, today, I present fics in which Izuku is a quirkless vigilante and interacts with Aizawa Shouta. These are all less than 6k words and arranged in alphabetical order.

Crawler 2.0 by Catlady5001

Izuku thought what happened on his last grocery trip was a one-off occurrence. Hint: it wasn't. Accidental vigilante Izuku! I love how he falls into vigilantism in this fic and all the lives he touches (and baffles). It's really sweet and he comes off so kind here!

After a month of chasing Knockout around corners and across rooftops, Shouta finding the vigilante bleeding on his doorstep is the last thing he expects. Our boy bites off a bit more than he can chew! I love his relationship with Aizawa in this fic and how Aizawa gained his trust. They are both so caring.

Vigilante Work And Other After School Activities by lovelysandlonelys

Izuku is a vigilante, Aizawa likes cats and therefore kids who help cats, and sometimes breaks must be forced upon overachieving teenagers. This one gets a special shout out for its worldbuilding! I love Izuku's backstory! I love the in-story speculating and theorizing! Aizawa's relationship with Izuku is also a delight.

Hi! I have a thought here that you may like or not (hori's canon sucks)

Have you noticed how some fics that want to show how Aldera sucks make the teachers Aizawa 2.0? While Aizawa finds out..time to save his dear problem child?

Bc I have and not defending Aldera. But fic writers who make "and aldera stoned Izu bc he is quirkless" and then glorify Aizawa are missing the point.

Aizawa is worse than Aldera's teachers. This is canon and Hori wrote this.

And I say again how Izu and even Shig's backstory makes no sense.

"They are the underdog" is just a justification for Hori's putting misery ocer misery on them.

Lots of fics do this, in part to shift blame off Bakugou (the teachers are doing worse to Izu and egged Bkg on, see!) or to glorify Dadzawa.

Even though, we never see Aldera's teachers explored because focusing on that would focus on how Bakugou was (and still is lmao) an abusive prick I doubt Aldera's teachers would pull "fake expulsion" bullshit or drop a building deliberately on their students...

Aizawa is a deeply traumatised character and one who in response projects it hard on to his students. His methods damage his students deeply both their records if he fake expells them and their mental health with his other methods. He also doesn't read students files so it's likely he's had disabled students and written them off as "troublemakers", "easily distractable" or "slow" and had them actually expelled instead of helping them.

Aizawa should not be a teacher and with how poorly he takes care of himself it's a miracle he hasn't got himself killed on the field already.

TLDR - usually suffering in a story has a point, but largely in the case of Izuku and Shig, it's pointless. And it's just there because Hori enjoys dunking on them, I guess.

Can you make Hcs or whatever you like of Kai having a S/o with an unhealthy addiction of tea? Like they drink tea at least 6 times a day (is tea even unhealthy?? meh) You could compare it to Aizawa with his Coffee or Sleep. That would be nice (:

At first he literally sees nothing wrong with it. Tea always has its benefits on the body and even calming effects on the brain much like camomile tea and other types.

Although he is the type of guy to look at you and say "everything in excess is unhealthy"

Which isn't exactly wrong.

As soon as this man starts to notice that you don't drink 2 cups at day bit actually 6 he gets a bit nervous.

"Angel this is your 6th cup."

"But is tea :("

Yeah... the puppy dog eyes won't do much effect to him anymore.

Kai literally stopped working to search about it and now he will terrorize you with the bad effects of too much tea.

Like... you would be making your first tea in the morning and this ass would be sipping his drink before he drops a bomb like this:

"You know my dear, like almost any food that is cultivated nowadays, tea leaves can contain or absorb various toxic compounds from the soil or through harvesting methods. Studies have discovered levels of toxin in many different types.... you may be consuming high levels of toxins."

I... feel pity on whoever dates Chisaki that have anxiety...

Although it seems like a dick move, the man is just hella protective and worried about you... so when it comes to health, he treats yours like his priority.

Which can be a bit suffocating.

Don't even doubt that he may or not order mimic to hide your staff of tea.

But he did learned his lesson to NOT do that when you went berserk and almost destroyed the house in your search for it.

He gets a bit annoyed when pops and you talk over this topic... why? Because it literally never ends.

It's always a new type or a new way to make tea and this guys is almost flipping the table because he is trying to lower your addiction but then his boss has to go over to you offering what?

TEA.

He might develop a bit of distaste for tea after all that.

The exceptions he takes when he is trying to cut your habbit of drinking tea is when a special date appears and he likes to give your favorite type.

He is weak on his knees when he sees your face light up when he delivers the box filled with your favorite kind of tea....

But he soon regrets it when it's all gone in one evening.... the same one he gave it to you.

"How? Just how (y/n)?"

"I couldn't help it, is so good!" You would say while going to take another sip until this asshole just yanks the cup and goes away.

Yeah he is a bit extreme.

Sometimes Friends Suck

A/N: Hey guys. I haven’t been around in a while lol. Sorry. Life’s been kicking me in the rear, and I’ve had nonstop marching band for 3 weeks now. 3 more weeks to go! *silently dies inside* but it’s ok because we are placing really well and making a lot of progress.

Anyway, this little piece is based off of what has happened to me this week with one of my so-called friends. She hurt me a lot, so I wrote it out in hopes of helping me feel better.

“By the way, we’re planning on meeting at my place on Sunday to play Cards Against Humanity and watch (least favorite movie),” Izuku informed you. The two of you were studying in the common room after dinner, just the two of you. “We talked about it during lunch. I wanted to let you know.” You often have lunch in Aizawa’s classroom. It was much quieter and it gave you time to decompress and relax.

“You lost me after (least favorite movie),” you chuckled. “I refuse to watch it.”

“It’s just going to be a background noise while we play cards,” Izuku smiled. “Cause we all agree. That movie sucks. That’s why we’re watching it. To make fun of it.”

You sighed, smiling back. “I guess I’ll be there. I love cards.”

The next day, a few members of the deku squad were talking about the movie night. You were sitting with Ochako and Yayurozu during downtime in class, listening to them talk.

“Yeah, and now we’re going to dress up as the characters we assign you from (least favorite movie),” Ochako said.

“Oh, I don’t wanna do that,” Yayurozu said hesitantly. “I’m not bit on dressing up as (least fav. Character from movie).’

“Oh, come on!” Ochako groaned with a smile, the way girls do when they try to get their way. “It’ll be fun!”

You gave your opinion, chiming into the conversation. “Yeah, I’m not doing that either.”

Ochako whipped around to you, an annoyed look on her face. “Then don’t go!” she said quickly. There was something about her tone of voice that hurt you. You tried to explain that you wanted to go, but that you didn’t want to dress up. She didn’t let you, cutting you off 2 more times with the same “Then don’t go!”, each one harsher than the last.

“Fine then, I won’t go,” you muttered quietly, crossing your arms and ducking your head. Ochako’s words stung, leaving you feeling down and unwanted. You stood from your seat and walked away, spending the day in silence.

It was dark now, the sun had set hours ago. You retreated to your dorm room when the final school bell rang. Your friends tried to ask you to go out to eat with them, but you just kept walking back to the dorms.

You were sitting at your desk, attempting to do your calculus homework when you received a notification on your phone. Your friends had been texting in the group chat and you had ignored them, but this was a different notification. It was a Snapchat message from Izuku.

Hulk 2.0: Hey, are you ok? You’ve been really quiet today. Did something happen?

Me: I’m alright. Someone just said something to me today and it kinda hurt.

Hulk 2.0: I’m sorry. Who was it? What did they say?

Me: Don’t worry about it. I’m probably overthinking it anyway.

Me: And I don’t think I’ll be coming over for that movie anymore

Tears welled up in your eyes as you pressed send, turning off your phone and getting back to work. You wrote out the math problem on your desk in dry erase, quickly solving it and typing the solution into your computer. Then you erased your work and got another notification from Izuku.

Hulk 2.0: So it was someone in the friend group? You don’t have to tell me who it was, but can you at least tell me what they said?

Me: Yeah, it was someone in the friend group. Basically they told me not to go in a really mean way. And so I don’t want to go if they don’t want me there. I want them to have a good time and I don’t want to ruin it.

There was a long period of time between your message and Izuku’s next one. He must have been sending a long one.

Hulk 2.0: N/N, I promise you wouldn’t ruin anything. They shouldn’t have said that to you. That’s just rude. They didn’t have the right. Besides, it’s at my place so I get the final say on whether or not you get to go. You’re allowed to go. We want you there. I want you there. It wouldn’t be the same without you.

You were crying now. You hated how Ochako’s words hurt you. How they made you feel this way. You had experienced similar situations with her in the past, and each time hurt you more than the last.

Me: Izu, don’t worry about it. I don’t like (least fav. movie) anyway. You’d all just have to listen to me complain about it anyway.

Hulk 2.0: Listen, I usually don’t get frustrated like this. I’m putting my foot down. Y/N, you’re coming over on Sunday and watching this with us. We were actually trying to come up with ways to convince you to go. I don’t know if you’ll tell me who said these things to you, but they shouldn’t have. They shouldn’t have made you feel so unwanted. You’re going. That’s final.

You wiped your eyes and typed out a quick: If I can make it.

Izuku responded: thank you. I love you <3

The next day, you stayed away from your group of friends. Ochako was always there, and you didn’t have the energy to deal with her today. So you stayed to yourself, making the occasional conversation with Denki and Kirishima. You went about your day, and stayed in Aizawa’s classroom when lunch rolled around.

Shinsou joined you for lunch today. He was still fairly new to class 1-A and didn’t quite know who to sit with at lunch, and he liked you enough to not mind being with you.

“You’ve been quiet lately,” he commented quietly. “Did something happen?”

You sighed, turning your phone off and setting it on Aizawa’s desk. “Yeah, one of my so-called friends said some not nice stuff to me yesterday.”

“Oh, I’m sorry,” Shinsou said with a small frown. “Do you wanna talk about it?” You and Shinsou had a weird relationship. You never really hung out outside of school, but trusted each other enough to go to the other about certain things.

“Remember how I said I don’t really like Ochako?” you asked him. The indigo-haired man nodded, taking a bite of his lunch. “Well, the friend group is getting together at Izu’s this weekend to watch (Least fav. movie) and to play Cards Against Humanity,” you started. “I originally wasn’t going to go because I despise that movie but I really want to hang out with them, so I was gonna go.”

“Then somebody said something?” Shinsou asked, a small reminder that he was listening to you intently.

You nodded. “Yeah. Yesterday, Ochako was telling Momo that we have to dress up as the character they assign us as. And I said that I didn’t want to do that. Why would I want to dress up as a character I’ve never seen from a movie I hate?”

“Right,” Shinsou agreed.

“Then Ochako told me not to go, but there was almost, I don’t want to say hatred, but hatred in her voice. And when I explained that I wanted to go, she kept interrupting me telling me not to go.” Tears brimmed your eyes and you wiped them away. “God, I hate her.”

“She shouldn’t treat you this way,” Shinsou comforted, placing a hand on your knee. “But do whatever makes you most comfortable. You shouldn’t have to go if you don’t want to.”

You sniffed and wiped at your nose, offering Hitoshi a soft smile. “Thanks, Shinsou.” The bell rang, signaling the end of lunch. The two of you made your way out of Aizawa’s office and to your desks, getting ready for class.

You were working on a science project with Todoroki when you received a text message from Ochako.

Ochako: Hey I just wanted you to know that I wasn’t trying to sound as if we didn’t want you to be at…

You read the preview before standing and making your way over to Shinsou, who was working on his project with Denki.

“Look at this shit,” you whispered, opening the text to read with him.

Ochako: Hey, I just wanted you to know that I wasn’t trying to sound as if we didn’t want you to be at the (least fav. movie) thing I just didn’t want you to feel forced into going if you didn’t want to because I know that would have made me feel upset if you weren’t having fun. I’m looking forward to it and your (least fav. character) costume. :) (If you don’t know who that is, google might be your friend… good luck ;) )

“Is this from her?” he asked, taking the phone from your hands.

“Yeah.”

He looked at you with a raised eyebrow as he handed you your phone back. “Sounds fake if you ask me. I bet someone figured out she was the one you were talking about and she just wrote this because they made her feel bad.”

“That’s what I was thinking,” you responded. “Should I text her back or leave her on delivered?”

Shinsou took a moment to think. “Leave her on delivered. Don’t waste your time with it.”

You nodded and smiled slightly. “Will do. Thanks, Shinsou.”

“Anytime.” You went back to your seat and got back to work with Todoroki on your project.

At the end of the day, you were laying in bed, relaxing before you fell asleep. You opened up Shinsou’s Snapchat, sending him a photo with a message.

Me: She’s in my 7th period, and she didn’t even say anything to me. You think she’d at least apologize in person or say something about it, but no. She just stared at me, trying to make eye contact. She looked as if I was the one who was supposed to say something. God I hate her.

A moment later, Shinsou responded with his own image and message. You could see his messy purple hair sticking out of the hood of his hoodie, as well as his shoulder.

Shinsou: I’m sorry :( Like I said, she shouldn’t have said anything to you. Just ignore her. Let her come to you. Let me know if you need anything.

You sighed, replied a quick ‘will do’, and turned off your phone. Ochako’s words still hurt you, and you made up your mind. You weren’t going to go to the movie night. You aren’t going to put yourself through it. You plugged your phone in and fell asleep, tears silently streaming down your cheeks.

As someone who had dropped the manga way back but still know generally what’s happened, why do you hate the “Dark Deku arc” (besides that stupid name)

I think the basic idea - letting Deku react to the war by ditching everyone and break himself to become All Might 2.0 - was a fine one.

Deku's biggest flaw is his self-sacrificing, self-destructive, martyristic tendencies and his saviour syndrome, which is ironically both extreme self-lessness (as in not care about himself) and extreme selfishness (as in not caring about the feeling of others who do care about him). Letting this flaw play out until it leads to an epic downfall that the MC has to suffer so he can rise again is the bread and butter of hero stories.

But the problem was with the execution, and notably Horikoshi's biggest flaw as a writer - he's so scared of making Deku unlikable that every single time he pulls his punches, which in turn stunts Deku's character development. To me, this is the biggest problem of the arc - Deku's fall is so ambiguous that half the fandom is convinced that he could have gotten himself out just fine from the predicament he was in, and then "soloed" all of Class A if he made any effort. This ambiguity shows that it wasn't a real downfall.

Another grave looming consequence of Deku's choices was the heart-breaking scene of him ditching All Might. Both Deku and All Might were meant to learn from this arc that the Symbol of Peace was a flawed concept, that it is insane to place the burden of a nation's security on a single person, no matter how powerful or driven. But despite building a perfect scene, Hori did nothing with it. Neither Deku, nor All Might ever fully confront the reality - they just reconcile, like nothing happened, Stain tells All Might that the Symbol was the right thing and it feels like there is nothing learnt.

Dark Deku that was meant to be a tragic, sad figure of a child driven to the breaking point by the burden he's carrying as a legacy and the pressure both external and self-imposed to step into a role he cannot be and shouldn't ever have to be ready for, becomes nothing but an empty "dark aesthetic" to please Deku-stans who wanted him to be "cool" and "strong" and "edgy".

When half the fandom doesn't realize that Dark Deku is a point in the narrative where Deku is ironically the weakest in heroic spirit - he's driven by fear, by a selfish obsession to do it all alone, by wanting to deny others their ability to step up as heroes because they are not strong enough, when he's slowly becoming everything he was the antithesis of at the beginning of the story and it still goes over the head of the audience, the point was not well-made.

There are a number of other problems with the arc:

Class A's aftermath gets skipped - we get zero emotional pay-off for big things that happened like Midnight's death, Aizawa losing an eye and leg, how the Dabi-reveal affects Shouto, how the class is impacted by the collapse of hero society, how the parents feel about their children being on the frontlines. Tons of issues the war raised and never delivered on.

Deku's power-ups come too quickly and feeling largely "unearned". It led to a huge power-creep where Deku is nothing than empty recipient of free candy. There is no hype of him reaching "faux-100%" because it doesn't feel like he made any effort to get there. There is no learning curve, everything he tries succeeds immediately. It's boring. It cheapens everyone else's hard-earned progress. It’s frustrating how little sense of accomplishment there is now in the final arc as Deku uses all his powers together in a big power-demonstration. It’s just not satisfying to watch at all.

The HPSC plot that's been brewing in the background since the Licensing Arc fizzles into a non-sensical plot of a single assassin who takes out false heroes to uphold hero society. A person never referenced committing shady black-ops never alluded to, having no impact on the overall story. By Horikoshi's own admission, he basically ripped off the character and plot from an over-the-top assassin movie (Wanted) like the week before. Which really shows. This is one of my biggest disappointments of the arc. There was such a good build-up to exposing the rotten core of HPSC and it felt like it was set-up originally as a Hawks fall-from-grace-become-a-shadowy-operator kind of plot that would have given also Hawks a more satisfying post-war arc than "being optimistic to a fault". But I feel that just like with Deku, Horikoshi has the same issue with Hawks - being too afraid to make him unlikeable.

The Nagant-fight even as a fight is deeply unsatisfying and honestly feels like a Deku-circlejerk, where Nagant is beaten way too easily for all her hype, turned way too easily by the "irresistible heroism of Deku" who does something that every other hero in the story always did. Like, I hope the end-game no-jutsu will be more satisfying.

The OFA-plot and vestiges are in the center, but still, we are given almost no reason to care about the vestiges or their relationship with Deku or the history of AFO vs OFA. The whole mystery of the 2nd and the 3rd ends in an unsatisfying reveal, where Deku doesn't have to do a damn thing again to get those two on his side.

I do like Class A showing up and the one chapter of flashback we get of them. Some of the fight is fun, some of it is extremely cringy though. The message is also wishy-washy. I think the fight should have squarely focused on the class refusing Deku seeing them as useless victims and telling him that he doesn't get to choose who cares about him. But again, 80% of it is just a "Deku-praise-fest".

Bakugou apology is great though and the highlight of the arc.

Deku's return and Uraraka's speech and the straw-manning of the civilians is again pretty terrible, and the only thing that carries those chapters is Horikoshi laying down thick the ham-fisted parallels.

So these are the main issues. I think the arc could have worked but it didn't because the overall execution was really bad. It had beautiful art and some compelling scenes / images, but didn't feel coherent.

But its biggest flaw was Horikoshi pulling his punches. Not letting Deku stumble, doubt, question, fail meant he learnt nothing and didn't get the kind of downfall after which you feel the sweet satisfaction of him standing back up again (these scenes tend to go to Bakugou).
