Princess Luna slitted her eyes and laid her ears back as she asked in a tone too mild to be safe for any that her anger was directed to, “Chest lineament and a day off at half pay for a colt with pneumonia? Rent up twenty bits put you at a hardship? Impre Sario was that rude to you both?”
Both Foamy and Clarice nodded. “That's right, Your Highness.”
Suddenly Celestia broke out in a chuckle as she commented, “That explains why he hasn't put on any ballets except The Singing Swan, The Dance of the Sweet Peach Breezy and the Awakening of the Dragon! They are all not only Public Domain, they are widely used as recital pieces for ballet schools! Every dancer knows them!”
Luna, however, was boring in on a different issue entirely! “Foamy, I got your request and gave Impre a benefice for two weeks off at full pay and for up to ten thousand gold in horsepital expenses with an extention if needed. Both were cashed at EQNB with signatures that matched the sample cards.
“Clarice, I have been paying top scale by benefice, which, like Foamy's were all signed to match the sample cards, as required when cashing Royal Benefices.”
Foamy snorted, “Afraid not, Your Highness. Impre always gave us pay packets with coins. None of the troupe, stage hands, set builders or painters, ever saw a benefice. Frankly, we don't trust EQNB at all. We do all of our banking here at Ponyville Trust and Loan. With Grumpy Goat on the Board of Directors, we know that it is dead honest!”
Princess Twilight snickered, “Dead Honest about perfectly describes Grumpeter! Good choice for banking too! All of the Principality banking is done there at PTL. PTL's got over ten times more in liquid assets than EQNB. That's why this Principality is so prosperous.”
Kin added to the mix a bit by offering, “What Foamy and Clarice just told you guys is spot on.”
Foamy and Clarice were not to be deterred from their initial goal, “Now that that's covered, about these dances! Kin, if you can do to us what you did to them,” she pointed at AJ, Rarity and Pinkie, “it would really help us to score these dances. We want to learn to choreograph them properly.
“We really like Princess Twilight's suggestion. It will let us add these dynamite dances to the show without having to work up a new main stage dance and sets. We only need to hang backrop and wings curtains that I know that we already have.”
Pinkie, to call attention, made a metalic BURR by doing a bust shimmy in her coin decorated dancing bra, and stated flatly, “We need Red and Sweet Lawn in on this. I'll bet that they could do backdrops that will really make the dancers stand out! Candy might have some good ideas too! You guys have seen her genius at costume design! I'd lay money on her fixing up something in these dances that would work for pegassi!”
That was when Twilight's mirror sounded a warbling tone!
“What is it, Captain Ranbow Dash?”
“We have some lard butt who claims to be from Canterlot Castle and in charge of the gala! He set off alarms trying to open the locked stage doors! He wants to dump all of Pinkie's scenery into the street to make room for HIS scenery that is on the train coming from Canterlot. He claims that the show will be a ballet called 'The Singing Swan'!”
Celestia chuckled, “Speaking of evil will draw it to you!”
Princess Luna interrupted, “Rainbow, this is Luna. If that lard butt is named Impre Sario, put him on!”
A dusty orange unicorn came to the mirror. He snapped, “Whatever your business, make it quick! I have only a few days to get this fundraiser gala organized!”
“Impre! Look at who you are talking to! YOU have no part in this show!”
“I don't care if you are this pipsqueek local so called Princess! My authority is directly from the Princesses Celestia and Luna! They outrank everypony in this kingdom! I AM IN CHARGE HERE.”
“I am afraid not, Impre. By the Joint Royal Order of Princess Luna, Princess Celestia and Princess Twilight Sparkle, you are removed from ALL responsibility connected to any show or event whatsoever.
“Guard Captain Rainbow Dash, by the authority just referred to, place Impre Sario under Royal Arrest. Cap his horn and put him into a cell until it shall be our Joint Pleasure to see to his case. For a holding charge, put embezzlement of 10,500 golden bits and forgery of a Royal Benefice for personal gain.”
The pony in the mirror was utterly aghast! “You can't do this! I have served you for years!”
Celestia put her horn into the conversation, “We are aware of that, Impre. We are putting the RIS on your case this very morning. While we were speaking to friends recently, I had occasion to look at Foamy's signature card at EQNB. It is a right handed signature. The problem is simple. Foamy is LEFT handed. The Royal Benefice that was cashed for her sick foal Barrel Racer's horsepitalization matched the card. She did not get the money. Luna has verified that by Bridge of Dream.
“If you do not cooperate in your arrest, our Joint Order is for you to be slain where you stand. All clear? No need to like it. Just cooperate or die.”
Foamy, overhearing the conversation was dropjawed! “Kill Impe! I know that he's a jerk, but death?”
Luna smiled but there appeared to be literal fire in her eyes! “Foamy, dear, what he did to you was only the tiniest tip of a very big iceberg. We won't know until the Royal Intelligence Service report is done, but it appears that he was hijacking around a half to two thirds of the ENTIRE Royal Ballet budget. There may be more besides. He did many fundraising events.”

2022 Year in Review/Writing and Hobby Goals 2023
No sooner did 2022 start than I blinked and now it’s 2023. The biggest thing that came out of 2022 was the realization during a professional conference that I still enjoyed the type of work I was doing, but that I had to finally leave the job that was causing so much stress and anxiety. And so I did. I started a new job on October 31, and it’s been such a better environment for me so far (just got to do my best from becoming my own worst stress/anxiety inducer). Between that and fingers crossed trying to buy my own home, I’m looking forward to this new year.
I successfully met my word count goal for 2022 (primarily in part to Hippo Creativity Challenges :D), over 25,000 with just my posted works, and between 30,000 - 35,000 including work on unposted works. I posted two Ellana/Blackwall ficlets (1, 2), two Jane/Garrus ficlets (1, 2), and two Builder/Aadit one-shots (1, 2). Writing Portia fic was such a fun change, and with the release of the sequel My Time at Sandrock, I have plans to write more in this universe. I also went back to my original fiction and started re-outlining and planning, which was so fun to go back to a world that had its roots to stories I wrote in middle school.
I surpassed my reading goal, reading the most books in a year in some time at 30. Favorites included the Hell’s Library trilogy (AJ Hackwith), Diaries of Alan Rickman (RIP always), A Memory Called Empire (Arkady Martine), A Winter’s Promise (Mirror Visitor Quartet 1, Christelle Dabos) and last but not least four T. Kingfisher novels (Swordheart, The Seventh Bride, Clockwork Boys, and The Wonder Engine) that I absolutely adored and inspired me to go back to try writing original fic again.
While I didn’t get to many of the games on my 2022 list, there were new ones that I found so rewarding and fun to play, including Lake, Kena - Bridge of Spirits, Stray, My Time at Sandrock, Dysmantle, and Disney Dreamlight Valley.
Now on to my primary writing and hobby goals for 2023!
2023 Primary Writing Goals:
25,000 words (bonus 50,000 words)
Jane/Garrus, Ellana/Blackwall, and Builder/Owen (My Time at Sandrock) ficlets
Bills (Stardew Valley one-shot with farmer Annabelle/Harvey)
A Surprise Visit (post My Time in Portia main quest; Builder/Aadit)
Time will again be the joy it once was (DAI)
Girl refugee on docks in ME3 and Shepard clone one-shots
Shepard personal logs (ME1-3)
Inheritance (original fiction planned trilogy)
Experiment with writing out headcanon snippets for ideas that I may not write out in fic
2023 Primary Hobby Goals:
Books:
Read at least 20 new books, with focus on fantasy and non-fiction
Play the following games:
A Plague Tale - Requiem
Days Gone
Ghost of Tsushima
My Time at Sandrock
Disney Dreamlight Valley
The Outer Worlds
Horizon Zero Dawn and Horizon Forbidden West
Borderlands - The PreSequel
Life is Strange True Colors
Tell Me Why
Finish MELE - ME3
Syberia series (1-3, The World Before)
Other hobbies:
Nature photography
Puzzles and puzzle books
Music and video editing
Music in some capacity (flute, guitar, or piano)
Keeping the same mantra as last year, to find joy in the little things. Also, to have kindness towards myself when I struggle. <3

"I'm not so sure again about the people around him, the managing side, picking a man like Wallin. He would give anybody a problem, he's a 6ft 5in Southpaw, a good game kid, and has one of the best trainers in the world in his corner in Joey Gamache. At the end of the day, it's an uphill battle let's put it that way. Can AJ pull it off? He can. But he's going to get tested like he has never been tested before. I think if I was looking after him I wouldn't have picked Wallin, no. When AJ is like he is, he's on a comeback trail, he's had a few setbacks, you want a confidence builder. And this ain't a confidence builder, this is a hard fight."
Me:
I wholeheartedly agree with John Fury's opinion here, but I congratulate AJ for being the only HW boxer out there today, who takes big risks by fighting the best. He never dodged any fight or fighter like Tyson Fury and Wilder usually do.  #Highlights @Everyone

BIO
Hephaestus didn’t keep him waiting long. His twelfth birthday was marked with the revelation that he was not his father’s son, but actually the child of the God of the Forges. He couldn’t say that the news of who his siring father truly was did any good for the relationship he had with his father.
Nicolo couldn’t say that his father was a bad father. If at all, he was a role model. Treated his mother with kindness, provided to their house, and still made time to play with him. However… After he found that out and a few weeks before his school year was over, there was an incident that, to this day he still doesn’t know how to explain but cost him his return the following year. His father, although resistant at first, finally changed his opinion and urged his mother to send Nico to the camp for the summer. It would be best for him and he would be safe there.
The trip to Long Island was unexpectedly uneventful. His father still wasn’t happy with him but he knew it would be for the best and it would only be for the summer. Come the school year, he’d be back with his family and everything would be alright again.
Or so he told himself. Time and time again.
And although it was only for three months, it was… Interesting to learn about his divine inheritage. And about the forge. Sure, three months would not be enough to get him in any decent shape. But as the following years rolled around, he found himself learning how to balance the both halves of his life. It wasn’t an easy path but he would make his father proud. And would try and not become a disappointment to Hephaestus.
For the next 5 years he would find himself in a very comfortable cycle. Going to and from camp in summer, working the forge and during his senior year at high school the main talk with his father was about where he’d be going to college the next year. He was excited to follow in his dad’s footsteps but there was one variable that his mother would not let either of them forget. Nico’s blood father. His powers. And everything else that came with that side of his life. Including the weird and unexpected visitors that would show up in the middle of the night. Asking for shelter… Or reinforcement. And the weapons Nico carried with him. Bade by himself. How was he supposed to attend college across the country so far away from them? From help in case he got into trouble?
Unfortunately… The decision was taken away from him. As his father drove him to camp for that summer they were also chased by monsters. Well, Nico’s father was intent on making sure his son would reach safety whereas Nico could not let his mortal father stand in harm’s way. That wouldn’t do. So… After some arguing and some yelling, Nico’s father finally agreed to let him go and turned the car around to leave as Nico made a run for the hill that would lead him into the camp, hoping that he’d be able to distract the monster for long enough so his father would be able to put a safe distance from the monster. But the mission that he was assigned that summer only served to prove that he was a growing source of danger to his mortal family and he’d spend the next three years with his focus only on training and forging. And maybe a certain distraction, to make things less dull.
And said distraction took the shape of a boyfriend. A son of Apollo, Daniel, who seemed to spend every waking moment trying to get into Nico’s nerves and when he finally caved, he came to realize that he was not as annoying as he once thought. And Nico had honestly thought that it would be a good idea to take Daniel along with him to spend Christmas with his family. Especially since it would also be his father’s 50th birthday. Not to mention that he was scared out of his mind, afraid that Daniel and his father wouldn’t get long… Little did he know that their celebration would be overrun by monsters, following the scent of two delicious demigods. Sure, they had been trained to deal with monsters, but in a suburban neighborhood and surrounded by mortals that they should also protect, they were quickly outnumbered.
Nico, resourceful as he liked to think he was, created a diversion so he could escape with his mother while yelling to Daniel to help his father and run. What he did not expect… Was that there would be cyclops waiting for them and he’d have to stand there, helpless, as he watched the two most important men of his life be taken away from him in a single motion. All he could do was get his mother out of there and not succumb to despair. An herculean task in and of itself.
And as a result… He lost connection with his mother… And with himself. Without his Father and Daniel he felt like there was not much he could live for and that made him quite reckless in battle, charging forward without a plan or strategy, only wanting to put down as many monsters as possible. Until a nearly fatal wound brought a new perspective to his life.
He was not a leader. And he was no longer a fighter. Hell, he had failed as a protector. What else was there for him? Well… The answer would be in his forge.
Creation.
Traps. Weapons. Armos. Shields. Gadgets. He’d create and develop the deadliest toys he could think of. And then his fellow demigods hopefully would make it safely back to camp. Hopefully, he’d prevent the ones that never left camp from losing their own Daniels as they went on missions.
Hopefully.

AutoSportRadio.com 2023 Show for June 25th - Guests; Kasey Coler and Kody Swanson
The Autosportradio.com 2023 Show for July 25th which was recorded in front of a live audience at Green Street Pub and Eatery, 911 N. Green Street in Brownsburg will have its broadcast release on Sunday, July 30th.  Check it out here, or on YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, Rumble, and Tumblr, or just look it up at the AutoSportRadio.com website.
Guests...
* Kasey Coler
Pavement open-wheel racing owes much to Kasey Coler, the general manager at Lucas Oil Indianapolis Raceway Park, and the unlikely architect for the rebirth of an entire discipline in the Midwest.
The reimagined Hoosier Hundred, now a pavement race won by Bobby Santos III over Memorial Day weekend, was just the latest victory by Coler in his efforts to revitalize pavement Sprint Cars, Midgets, and the USAC Silver Crown series. The track crowns a yearlong ‘AJ Foyt Championship that combines all the divisions into one championship.
The field size has nearly doubled for all three divisions during his time promoting the 0.686-mile oval just outside of Indianapolis and that is to say nothing of the return of the NASCAR Craftsman Truck Series last summer.
The crazy part of considering the recent success of the oval is that the track isn’t even one of his primary responsibilities. The general manager title is just part and parcel of his role as NHRA Vice President of Track Management and Operations. He only operates the short track by its existence alongside one of the crown jewel NHRA facilities where his office just happens to be located.
Coler says the short oval amounts to roughly 30 percent of his duties, albeit with a caveat.
 *Kody Swanson
For Kody Swanson, on Thursday night, July 20th at Winchester (Ind.) Speedway served as a place to go back-to-back in a myriad of manners.
The victory was his second consecutive in USAC Silver Crown competition after winning the most recent round at Wisconsin’s Madison International Speedway in June, marking the 13th occasion in which he’s won two-straight series main events in his career with the series.
Furthermore, the triumph was the second occasion in a row in which he performed a complete sweep by recording the fastest time in both Dirt Draft Practice and Honest Abe Roofing Qualifying before going on to lead all 100 laps en route to victory.
Finally, and perhaps most impressively, it was Swanson’s second straight win at the 31st running of the Rich Vogler Classic Presented by The Pallet Builder, backing up a similarly dominant run from the pole position in 2022 in which he also completely swept the night.

Growing the Movement: Supporting Democratic Change through Coalition Building
Tumblr media
By: AJ Acacio, Technical Specialist - Social and Behavioral Science
In the first part of this blog series, we explored how to begin mobilizing collective action to promote democratic change. We identified barriers to participation, offered strategies to recruit sympathizers and bystanders, and discussed tactics to avoid. History tells us, though, that eliciting buy-in from a small number of actors is rarely sufficient. Organizers must also build and grow their movement, as research suggests that civil society organizations (CSOs) and other groups are more effective when they forge diverse coalitions. It is also often the case that a critical number of participants need to be engaged before a movement can bring about significant change. However, pulling together individuals and groups, who often have different incentives and diverging viewpoints, is easier said than done. So how do we go about this challenge? Evidence from the field of social and behavioral science (SBS) offers some insights.
1. Define common goals
For coalitions to grow, members need to unite toward common goals. Such goals may be broad, such as influencing climate policy or supporting women’s rights, or they can be more specific, such as reducing carbon emissions or fighting against gender-based violence. In any case, coalitions must define a clear vision and mission statement. Mobilizers can do this through candid conversations in which all members share their individual priorities before having the group identify a unifying shared interest. A study conducted in the Netherlands, for example, revealed that social movements are more likely to grow if goals are collective (e.g., reducing gas extraction) rather than individual (e.g., receiving financial compensation). Once they agree upon a goal, movement organizers should codify it into a mission statement. This helps build coalitions by clarifying to members why they should remain committed to the group and allowing prospective members to easily see if the group’s viewpoints align with their own.
There are many ways that democracy, human rights, and governance (DRG) practitioners can support mobilizers in defining common goals, from providing physical spaces to hold meetings and operating online forums for communications to conducting research to uncover shared interests and undertaking political economy analyses to identify common objectives.
2. Maintain shared identity
Coalitions are most successful when members feel a sense of unity. One way to achieve this is by forging and maintaining a shared identity. In a classic study in psychology, researchers found that identifying clear groupings can increase members’ cooperation with, and helping behaviors toward, their in-group. Coalition builders can leverage this effect to encourage buy-in both from current members and future ones. If coalitions communicate that a shared ideology, nationality, or another grouping unites everyone, then current members will be more likely to devote time and resources toward the common goal. Moreover, nonmembers may feel motivated to join to achieve a positive social identity. By leveraging this intrinsic human need to belong, mobilizers and their supporters and advisers can build and grow resilient coalitions.
With that said, leveraging a shared identity must be approached with care. Although identity politics is much to thank for the success of initiatives such as the Black feminist movement in the United States, critics call the strategy counterproductive and suggest it encourages violence. Regardless of intention, using shared identities often draws criticism due to perceptions of exclusivity and hostility. Movements should therefore strike a balance between maintaining a strong identity and not alienating nonmembers, keeping in mind that the most effective identities revolve around shared perspectives on key issues rather than gender, ethnicity, or other demographic divides.
3. Seek diverse allies
While common goals and shared identities form the bedrock of strong coalitions, the most effective movements are those that engage diverse actors, including those who hold what at first may seem like irreconcilable differences in identities or viewpoints. Bedfellows, broadly defined, refers to actors with a shared objective, regardless of a rocky history or vast differences in the motivations for the shared objective. For instance, despite diverging ideologies, Islamist women’s movements and Turkish LGBT groups have successfully allied together to campaign for broader civil liberties. Engaging bedfellows can build and grow coalitions because it increases the number of potential partnerships, forges connections between groups that may initially seem likely to be hostile toward one another and shifts the focus toward accomplishing specific objectives instead of forming ideology-based groupings. This is crucial not just for a coalition’s resilience but also for its agency and efficacy.
4. Build clear rules of membership
Once mobilizers identify goals and potential actors, it is essential for nascent coalitions to define clear rules for membership. For coalitions to be sustainable, members need to agree not just on what the central objective is but also on who is part of each conversation, how new members can join, and what the rules and expectations are for each actor. Coalitions must contend with questions such as: Who is eligible for membership? Is there a formal registration process? What are the expectations we have for all members? These are often difficult questions, but such reflection is crucial to ensure that coalitions are cohesive and that individual members know what their responsibilities to the movement are.  Indeed, the literature suggests that instituting formalized rules of membership results in more stable coalitions and that having a constitution that governs expected behaviors can be useful. In multiparty states, for example, formal coalition agreements allow parliaments to avoid stalemate and pass laws by coordinating support among parties. Labor unions also maintain their effectiveness through both formal and informal rules that punish those who cross the picket line during a strike. Such agreements ensure that members acting against a coalition’s interest are met with political, social, or personal consequences. Here, DRG practitioners can work with movement organizers to define streamlined processes for joining, clarify member expectations, codify rules in written constitutions, and encourage cooperation among actors.
5. Establish clear decision-making mechanisms
A key tenet of any SBS-informed approach to development is that the focus should be on observable behaviors and actions. In this context, this means that it is not enough to have strong coalitions; such coalitions must also be capable of swiftly making decisions and galvanizing members toward collective action. For this to happen, establishing clear mechanisms is crucial. Coalitions inherently consist of actors with diverging interests, so it is critical to ask how they can make a decision for the entire group.
For maximum representation, coalitions might decide based on unanimity, in which all actors must agree before they pursue a specific collective action. This is useful in high-stakes decisions, such as joining a protest or signing an agreement. For lower-stakes situations, such as selecting a group logo or setting a meeting time, coalitions might consider faster decision-making processes such as one based on consensus, a system that considers all voices but follows a mutually acceptable course of action. And for time-sensitive matters such as deciding how to respond to a threat, coalitions may agree to appoint trusted leaders to decide unilaterally based on their assessment of what is best for the group’s interest. In sum, to ensure that coalitions can drive collective action, mobilizers are well advised to pre-define how each type of decision will be made and by whom. This can avoid decision paralysis and ensure that coalitions are prepared to respond to the evolving needs of their members and the movements they represent.
Clearly, much thought is needed when building and growing coalitions. Any collective action that seeks to join diverse actors across ethnic, geographic, ideological, and other divides is a challenging task, yet one that is worth pursuing in the interest of empowering people to take charge of their own destinies. While the tips we offer here are not exhaustive and may not apply to every context, we lay them out in the hopes of starting a conversation about evidence-based approaches to movement building. It is only by exploring these approaches that mobilizers and development practitioners can move the needle when it comes to driving collective action and promoting democracy, human rights, and good governance in all corners of the world.
Stay tuned for the final part of this blog series, where we discuss how to maintain and sustain movements.

Verena Holmes;
The first female engineer.
A small, almost insignificant workshop, tucked away in a Gillingham street is part of a previously unknown story, featuring the countries, first female engineer.
This was pioneering, Verena Winifred Holmes 1889–1964, who long held an ambition, during her successful career to own an engineering company, with an all female staff.
In 1946, after years of searching and planning, Verena Holmes founded the engineering firm, Holmes and Leather Company Limited with, Sheila Leather 1898–1983, a fellow member at the Women’s Engineering Society.

Miss Leather later, following on from Miss Holmes became president of the Women’s Engineering Society in 1950. Both her sisters, Alice Muriel Hutchinson 1885–1969 and Lady Wemonah Hardwick Ansorge 1890–1979 invested in the Gillingham engineering company.
A small building in Beresford Road, close to Gillingham Road in Gillingham was found. The ground floor, with an outside toilet became a work-shop with several lathes. Via an internal open staircase, there were two small offices, one used by Miss Holmes as her drawing office.

The Beresford Works, Beresford Road, Gillingham, Kent - present day. Copyright: Mike Gunnill.
From the beginning, Ruth Faris 1910–2002, who liked to be called simply; ‘Faris’, was employed as the works-manager. She was originally from The Borough, Downton, in Wiltshire where her father, Ernest Frank Faris, a ex-seaman, was the local butcher. ‘Faris’ was highly qualified especially on the lathe, and would help train new staff, who Miss Holmes wanted with little, or no previous engineering experience. Most ladies were taken directly from the unemployment office in Gillingham. One of these recruits, was Mrs Amy Page of Chatham, who was the works-painter, finishing off, items made in the factory.
An office manager, Mrs Glasspool nee Burnett joined and like ‘Faris’ stayed with the company for the trading years, of 1946 to 1959.
As a new company, Miss Holmes considered various ideas to manufacture, including making: children’s prams, Yankee screwdrivers, map measures and parallel rulers. Finally they started production with a Bantam Shearing Machine, followed by a Bantam Rod Cutter and then, the successful, safe-guillotine.
The guillotine with the later added, safeguard was deemed safe enough to use in schools and the Gillingham company produced hundred’s of them!

The yard and part of the building are now empty, behind number 203 and number 2 Beresford Road; which was owned by upholsterer, Leslie Louis Clarke. The building and yard are now owned by a builder with the upstairs office area converted into a small flat with its own street access.
Miss Holmes was officially registered living at 127 Highbury New Park, London, and later owned a semi-detached house at, 8 Rusholme Road in Putney. During her time in the Medway Towns from 1946–1959 she rented from 1947, a semi-detached house at 2 Cleave Road, Gillingham, then a terraced house, 33 Leyton Avenue in Gillingham. Finally between 1956–1959 a nearby semi-detached property, at 40 Osprey Avenue, Gillingham in Kent.
There is a local suggestion, that Miss Faris, the factory manager, may have rented 205 Gillingham Road, Gillingham. This was, just a short walk from the Beresford Works factory.
One of the great joys of Verena’s life, and her mode of transport; was her motorcycle, used between North London and Gillingham, and for visiting friends. The photograph used here, shows Miss Holmes astride a AJS machine, first made in 1929, with a M8 Twinport 500cc engine. The registration plate was, GE 8556.

Rainham Kent historic-motorcycle expert Michael Best, who idenified the bike from the photograph says,
“ The bike wasn’t difficult to handle but had a large frame and the power was low. It had poor acceleration and didn’t have a high speed. These shouldn’t be compared with the modern combustion engines.”
The image of Miss Holmes is thought to have been taken in 1934, while visiting a Loughborough College friend, Nancy Johnson 1902–1993. Mrs Nancy Johnson was an ‘automobile labortary assistant’ at the college and is pictured with sisters, Helen and Pam Johnson and William Johnson in Pulham, Dorset. Miss Holmes suitcase is seen strapped to the rear seat of her bike.
In letters found recently, Verena Holmes expressed her “great enjoyment” pushing her bike up a hill, with a young 15 year old boy assisting. Then trying to start the engine on the way down the hill. She added later:
“ It was a pleasant way, to spend an afternoon.”
On the 8th April, 1959 Verena Holmes wrote in her private diary, that she was closing the Beresford Works. There had been several personality clashes with some women not wanting to work together. There was, ‘a little friction’ between Miss Holmes and her factory-manager, Miss Faris, who towards the end of the company, disappeared for long periods and then returned as if nothing had happened. Faris also had a “falling-out” with the company co-owner Sheila Leather and the pair didn’t speak for many years.
Miss Verena Winifred Holmes, 1889–1964 was born at Highworth, Maidstone Road in Ashford Kent, the daughter of Edmond Gore Alexander Holmes 1850–1936 and Florence Mary Holmes 1861–1927 nee Syme. The family plus Peter Macfanlane Syme 1829–1893, Mrs Holmes father, lived in the large house, with five servants.
Her father was a school inspector, later the chief inspector of elementary schools in England. The family lived in a private house, which is now; Gower House part of Highworth Grammar School for Girls. The school maintains a link with Verena Holmes and a collaborative exhibition with Ashford Museum held in 2022, is due to be repeated this year. In addition the school will again celebrate Women’s World Engineering Day on June 23rd, which is Verena Holmes’s birthday.

It was during the last days at her company; Holmes and Leather, it was noticed she was becoming fragile. She was nursed through pneumonia by friends, but she wouldn’t take medical advice, and continued working, moving to a nursing home, when only required to do so.
Miss Verena Winifred Holmes, 1889–1964 B.Sc(Eng.), A.M.I.Mech.E., M.I.Loco, E.,M.Inst.Met., A.M.I.Mar.E., died of heart problems in the Whitehanger Nursing Home, Danley Vale in Haslemere, Sussex on the 20th February, 1964.

Her Will of 18th February, 1953 used her resident address of 33 Leyton Avenue in Gillingham. Miss Holmes made bequests to her sister, Florence Ruth Holmes, various relations and to the Women’s Engineering Society, who received £100. She made an addition to the Will or a codicil on the 26th November, 1959 to accomadate a new bequest.
Six years later, the Gillingham address had become a former residence and 8 Rusholme Road in Putney, the main addrss. The codicil was witnessed by; Mrs Aimee Violet Hall, the Matron of Whitehanger. So by November 1959, Verena Holmes may have been living at the Haslemere nursing home.

Home loan fears demolish house builder share prices | City & Business | Finance
Barratt, the UK’s largest builder of homes, said it had seen an impact from mortgage rate hikes and reduced availability.
It comes as a survey today from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors warned of “storm clouds” gathering.
The number of would-be home buyers fell in September for the fifth month running, with properties coming on the market also down and members predicting prices will dip.
Simon Rubinsohn, RICS’ chief economist, said: “The turmoil in mortgage markets in recent weeks has compounded the increasing level of economic uncertainty resulting from higher energy bills and the wider cost of living crisis, in shifting the dial in the housing market.”
Barratt also blamed the cost of living crisis for a sharp year-on-year fall in reservations.
It added: “The outlook for the year is less certain with the availability and pricing of mortgages critical to the long-term health of the UK housing market.”
Barratt’s share price slumped as much as 8% in early trading, despite chief executive David Thomas saying full-year profits were still on track to be in line with current expectations.
The update triggered a sell-off in other house builders’ stocks, with Berkeley, Taylor Wimpey and Persimmon closing down between 3.1 and 6.2 percent.
It comes amid nervousness among investors that the housing market is heading for a sharp slowdown.
Lenders have pulled hundreds of mortgage deals since Chancellor Kwasi Kwarteng mini-Budget last month to concerns over borrowing costs.
Sophie Lund-Yates, an analyst at investment platform Hargreaves Lansdown, said: “A deterioration in the affordability of mortgages, especially for first-time buyers, is just about the biggest spanner that could be thrown at the builders.”
Russ Mould, investment director at broker AJ Bell, said: “If government ministers needed any evidence of how policy missteps can affect not just the financial markets but the real economy, then Barratt Developments’ first quarter results statement provided it in spades.”

Question for the author. I've seen it mentioned a few times in the past that many parts of Reins have changed over the process of writing it--from a different timing of Applejack's injury to a one-shot version of the story. Would you mind giving some details on how it's changed over time as you've gone through the process of planning and writing it?
OOC//
This is a fantastic question! Thanks for asking it, I’d love to talk about it. I hate myself for not having saved a draft of this bc I accidentally closed the app with about three paragraphs worth of an answer so now I have to rewrite it.
First things first, yup, this was supposed to be a one shot. I know I wanted to, at some point, have a rodeo AU story and I had also told my friend Red that I’d write a Strawbjack story. Reins was supposed to be both of those, but in a dumb one shot way. It was supposed to be a story where Applejack gets wracked up in her event and lands herself in the hospital. There, surprisingly, her rival Strawberry Sunshine would always show up (much to Applejack’s chagrin) to try to cheer her up. It was supposed to be a collection of moments that they share that shows them getting closer until finally they like kiss or something idk gay shit happens. But then “Applejack getting hurt” turned into “she ends up in a wheelchair” which turned into “maybe this needs more than one chapter” which eventually, after lots of planning and research and a lot of passion, turned into 70k words and counting of what is now Reins. Yup. A silly little hurt-comfort gay one-shot turned into this. I’m glad it got so out of hand, though.
As for the other changes, you mentioned the example of Applejack’s injury having been planned differently in terms of timing. That’s true! And it was gonna happen different, too. At first, I was planning for it to have been something that happened on Barley. I wanted her to have an accident with Barley that would land her in a wheelchair, and it was originally going to happen in the chapter Applejack Goes Splat. In the Reins doc that I write in, I have a big comment that I left for myself when I was writing that chapter. It’s in all-caps and just a very long run on sentence. The gist of it is, I wanted Applejack to get wasted in the bar (like she did) and then she’d have a fight with Strawberry (like she did, though fun fact I almost had them punch each other by which I mean I wrote “[…] and aj just like attacks her LOL”) and then she was supposed to go back to Brae’s barn.
Now here is where it gets really different. I had two things that could have happened. First thing, I almost had AJ try to drive herself home cause she was so mad and so stupid. That woulda ended exactly where you’d expect. But I wasn’t really into that idea, especially considering some other things that I’m not going to mention right now.
The other idea, and the idea I almost went with, was that they’d all go back to Brae’s as a group and Applejack would be so worked up and angry that she’d be unable to sleep. So what she usually does is she goes on a ride with Barley, but she’s still thinking about how she never finished running the barrels cause Barley threw her off. So instead, she drunkenly sets up her own barrels and decided she’s gonna finish her run one way or another. But, of course, drunk Applejack would make for a shitty course builder (the spacing is not very accurate) and a shitty rider (cause, like cars, you shouldn’t ride a horse while wasted). She has him run the course like three times, but none of those are something satisfying for her. So she pushes Barley. And she pushes him too hard and he slips under her (again) and instead of bucking her off, he kinda just falls over on top of her and like drags her a good ten feet til her foot finally falls out of the stirrups. Now, of course, Applejack is mostly just drunk and frustrated and thinks “what a perfect fucking thing to have just happened to me.” And she kind of laughs morbidly while the adrenaline is high. But then she tries to get up, and she can’t. And then the adrenaline goes away, and the shock causes her to sober up. And she realizes something is very very wrong. And, as I put in my note… “ADHJGDHGHKSF”.
What I went with was very different, obviously. She gets thrown into a metal fence in the middle of her saddle bronc event. She ends up doing the 8 seconds, but it’s later revealed she didn’t even score that well (fucking bummer eh?). The reason I changed it was because she now has very different takeaways from the experience. While at the root of it, the fact remains “Applejack blames herself because she was being stupid and reckless”, she can’t say “well I was drunk” now. That’s one of the things that’s different. The other is that now it isn’t Barley that did it, and that’s important in its own way. There’s some other crucial things that are different which is why I went with what I did, and it was definitely the right choice. Besides, then I couldn’t have written Game Day Day Two: The Final Day Of Game Day. God, I love making serious chapters have the silliest names. Anyway, pretty different, huh? Oh, what could have been.
And then there are other minor changes.
Fritter wasn’t supposed to be such a recurring character, but out of spite, I had her be a regular so the FIMFic admins had another reason to give her a character tag. In fact, I made a blog post about it on my main, and them my friend sent that to an admin and then Fritter finally got a character tag :).
Apple Bloom was supposed to be younger than she is.
Applejack was supposed to be a little more outgoing. And in character. Lol.
Strawberry Sunrise was supposed to be an actual mean spirited person mostly. At least to AJ.
Thistle was supposed to be the Apples’ new ranch hand, not someone she meets in the rehab centre. For various reasons, this was changed.
There’s a couple more, but I can’t share those. Anyway, the story itself (at least the specifics for this arc) is pretty much set in stone at this point but sometimes I do make minor changes while I’m writing if I feel it fits the flow of the story better. It’s a matter of “does what I’m writing fit what I’m trying to say, or would something different do it better?”
