Excerpt: Hands of a Healer

The chamber itself doesn’t seem massively large, but that’s more to do with the size of the furniture in it than the room itself. The bed he is in is several times larger than any one he’s ever seen before, and he knows he isn’t in the inn that have more Hylian appropriate accommodations. His mind clears and he recalls the smell of the healing salve, the feeling of Sidon’s hands wrapping the bandages over his wounds, the sound of his voice whispering gently before every touch. Heat rises to Link’s face, and he tries to push the thoughts back into the deeper parts of his mind in order to focus on what’s in front of him.

He is glad he is laying near the edge of the best so literally rolling off the (extremely, pleasantly soft) mattress isn’t too much of a chore. His joints ache in frustration when he stands on his feet and his stomach roars at him angrily.  There’s no telling how much of the pain is from the physical injuries and how much is from the emotional toll of the experience.

In either case, eating would ease some of the pain.

The slate was sitting on a side table next to the bed and he slips on his well-worn trousers and tunic, grateful for the thin softness of material. His olfactory senses are activated by the smell of warm food sitting on the desk against the window. Two large clay, lidded pots sat beside a slip of paper with his name scrawled at the top.

My dear friend, Link,

The elders have requested a special council session that I fear I must attend, rather than wait for you to wake to say goodbye. I can only hope that it is brief, and I am able to return quickly, rendering this note effectively useless. But, if I have yet to come back to my chambers, I would be overjoyed if you stayed a while longer to indulge my whims in saying goodbye and give you my utmost thanks. I do believe that the hero of our home has the social capital to stop by the throne room and bid farewell to the King. Nephiri, the guard stationed in the hallway, can escort you there.

However, I understand that you have a duty to attend to, and I admire your dedication. If you must depart so soon, please know that you are always welcome back in the Domain, my friend. Words cannot express how amazing and magnificent you truly are, nor can they speak to how grateful I am for what you have done for my people, and for me. Thank you, Link.

His stomach grumbles again, insistent that he stop reading and think about what is really important in this situation. He obliges and opens the lids to the smell of warm steamed rice and a deliciously sour and spicy tofu kimchi stew. He heats at his usual speed, immensely grateful to have a full stomach. The stew warms his entire body, easing some of the ache of his joints and the rice soft and fluffy. He reads the note again when he finishes and folds it into the pocket of his trousers. He’d need to find a way to store paper and recipe notes somewhere that wouldn’t be immediately destroyed with a failed attempt at using bombs to launch himself in the air.

Link looks around the room again, more than curious about the prince’s living spaces, finding it much messier than he expected from such a proper, polite prince. Small bits of paper litter the walls and floor where they must have fallen, each one some reminder of a meeting or a deadline, a few marked with names and occupations of other Zora. Many are random, scattered thoughts—

'dinner?’ ‘Bazz said I have to eat without working at the same time. Distract next time he asks.’ ‘vocal coach says tone needs improvement. Focus on tongue placement.’

—dispersed among the more “princely” ones. A number of books lay in stacks next to the various seats in the room, some rather close to the large pool near the open windows, despite having plenty of bookshelves against the walls. On the far wall Link can see a number of mounted weapons hanging above a large silver chest, which is, incidentally, the most organized thing in the room.

Cold rain falls upon the Domain, as it has been for the last few weeks. For a moment, he watches the droplets collect on the pathways. He sighs.

The Domain is quiet; the sun has scarcely started to rise. He refuses to look at the statue of his sister as he leaves.

He reaches the deck facing the angry Vah Ruta. Sidon stares at it for a long moment, expression intense but unreadable, before he begins to pace.

It doesn’t take him long to come to a decision. What kind of prince would he be if he didn’t take action?

Just like how botw had small details telling us the probable ‘canonical’ route Link took (aka Zora, Rito, Goron, and then Gerudo), totk has something similar. I’m sure all players noticed that the newspapers will feature one region that is meant to direct Link to go aid the people there. First is Rito, next is Goron, third is Zora, and last is Gerudo. BUT! They also added something else.

Zelda’s role in the story. Namely, her interactions with Tulin, Yunobo, King Dorephan, and Riju. Annnnnnddd Link’s reactions to her!

Tulin’s interaction with her is one meant to confuse players: Zelda was in the past, but Tulin saw her? So she’s here in the present and we’re chasing after her. Sounds a lot like Skyward Sword, okay (which was released on the switch last year, so anyone who didn’t play it back in 2012 had another chance to). It confuses Link, but spurs him to become a journalist ? Cool, I’m here for it. I did journalism for 4 years, I’m sure Link can do it too!

Then, for Yunobo, he actively speaks to Zelda, we see her figure, and Link will actively gasp whenever we see her. He has a genuine reaction to her presence, because he’s surprised, but then we see pink gloom glow in the mask that Zelda have Yunobo and it makes him freak out land turn against Link. That’s when we start to put together that maybe Zelda is being controlled? Or she’s NOT Zelda, just as Yunobo begins to theorize but can’t quite wrap his head around it.

Next, we have King Dorephan who is actually attacked by Zelda and is injured to the point that he decides to hide from his people as to not create more chaos in this time. He chooses to give Zelda the benefit of the doubt here— he could have easily had his people turn against Hyrule and all Hylians because of Zelda’s actions. But he doesn’t! Because it simply doesn’t make sense. And by the end of the quest, Sidon comes to the conclusion that the Zelda in the past and the Zelda in the present are NOT the same.

And we see that thought truly stick with Link in a cutscene in Gerudo. After defending Kara Kara Bazaar, Zelda appears and Riju calls out for her. There is no gasp from Link like with Yunobo’s story, instead he watches Zelda with a slightly narrowed gaze and does not stop watching where she was last seen until Riju directly addresses him. They actively show the players that Link is suspicious, but he is still so very dedicated.

And it happens again, in the center of the light triangle. Zelda appears and Link begins to walk toward her, but there is no intake of breath, no shock at seeing her… instead he slowly walks until Riju calls out for him.

After Link finishes each phenomenon, going to Lookout Landing gives the players a clue in how Link is reacting. Specifically, if you speak to Buliara before going to see Purah, she says something along the lines of “Purah is up on the top deck, but don’t miss a wrung in your haste to get up there.”

Link is expected to rush. Because everyone is muttering about a figure that MIGHT be Zelda. At the castle. Right. Then. And. There.

Link GASPS when he first looks into the scope— Purah doesn’t even say it’s Zelda, not before Link sees for himself. It’s seeing her, clear as day, and even if Link KNOWS it’s not her… there’s still that seed of doubt that lives in his mind. And then at the castle, Link does twist and turn whenever he hears Zelda. He rushes after her every. Single. Time. She disappears. Despite that he knows it isn’t her, he can’t give up. He can’t. It’s quite literally not in his DNA. He sees it through; he needs to make sure it isn’t her. And it’s all a trap, one he walks right into, because he just HAS to see that it isn’t her.

And if you want to say “but Ash… this is just a recap of the storyline in the present.. not small details” let us just remember that Link’s driving motivation in this game is to find Zelda and bring her home. So many people just ignore these little moments or miss them completely.

And I’ll be damned if I don’t talk about link’s gasps or his twists and turns or his micro expressions that tell us so much about how he is feeling.

i just imagine Sidon tried his damn hardest to heal so he can better help link by healing his wound but failed, but instead of trying to follow his sister's footsteps he decided to practice on his own abilities aka the water shield so Link doesn't have to get any wound to begin with :')

So basically Prince Sidon became my new comfort character recently and i couldn't rly grasp why I love him so much until right now.

From the very beginning something about the way his character is portrayed felt very fresh and interesting, and today i realized it's about genuineness.

This guy is so unapologetically supportive and genuine. He never does this thing where someone says something and then catches themselves like "oh that was cheesy". And i really don't see enough of that, especially in adult characters. In kids, sometimes. But almost never in adults.

I feel like at some point having very sarcastic and/or cynical characters, with "realistic" view on life was seriously a novel concept. But i guess the market has saturated. So in times where most of the media presented to us is dark and "realistic" (aka very depressing and cruel), having someone unironically say stuff like this:

(especially when the character themselves is presented as very masculine overall)

is really amazing and refreshing. And it's no surprise to me that he's so well loved. He deserves it.

Link is an ancestor of his and he's extremely hands off, usually passing shit onto Hylia or Demise or the three goddesses bc he's not invested in basically anything. when he is, its only when time and space is at risk, which isn't very often, but if he gets involved he's got a worse temper than Demise

Link bullies an Ocarina of Time out of him! here's a size comparison. Considering Zonai!Link is about the same size as Sidon, this dude's a bit toll. He also didn't used to be a god of time until he defeated Majora a long time ago through his music, when he was still very very young

it was a sad affair, and one of the reasons he doesn't participate in wars between the gods anymore. Majora nearly decimated the Zonai population and they never really recovered, even after Ordona took the helm. (as a result he's THRILLED that Link turned into a Zonai. hell yes my sonboy. furry upon thee!!)

so the breath of the wild fandom is pretty well known for REALLY liking prince sidon aka that one really tall fish guy. and they're also really well known for shipping him with link because every fandom needs a gay ship right. so then the sequel (totk) comes around and it's revealed that sidon has a fiance now and it's not link it's some zora girl from another domain. the game hasn't even been out for a month but i've seen people act so vile towards her like yona get behind me!!!!

She spent 100 years in a metaphysical wrestling match with an ancient and primal evil after seeing it destroy almost everyone and everything she held dear in the hopes of saving the few that remained and Link's main goal after HIYAHing his way out of a amnesia-inducing coma was to come in and tag team said evil in order to save her and like 90% of the memories he can regain focus on their relationship with each other and its gradual improvement up to the point where Link fucking dies protecting her and it's the push she needs to awaken the power to push back the blight and PEOPLE ARE STILL OUT THERE IN THEIR POST-CANON FANWORKS TRYING TO TELL ME THAT LINK FUCKS OFF AND LEAVES HER ALONE TO GO SMOOCH THE HOT FISH PRINCE BECAUSE ZELDA WAS BEING TOO OVERBEARING OR WHATEVER AND HE COULDN'T DEAL WITH THE EXPECTATION??? For the first time since 2017, Ponzu finally has a proper reference sheet!

I’ve decided over the years that she’s an ambassador from her deep-water realm to the inland domain. She’s based on a Chimaera monstrosa, aka rabbitfish or ratfish, and they regularly swim into shallower waters at night, so I figured by extension she’s more suited than some of her fellows to be doing ambassador work. Her formal wear reflects her status as an ambassador, fancier than the average citizen but distinct from royal garb in color and adornments. She doesn’t like to be dressed up if she doesn’t have to be.

Outside of the professional setting, Ponzu is very introverted. In her realm, she’s “normal”, or rather there’s enough variation amongst everyone that she doesn’t feel too outlandish. In the inland domain, she sticks out amongst the zora with all their brighter colors and their more uniform morphology. The idea of being perceived when not on her own terms is off-putting for her.

Ponzu is almost like a cryptid when she’s out and about in the inland domain - often goes out in the dead of night (she’s also very nocturnal, doesn’t like to be up during the day too much, the light can be hard on her eyes) to do her own thing, and with how extremely reflective her eyes are all you might see is a vague dark shape and glowing eyes in the distance if you spot her.

She and Sidon originally bonded from a diplomatic perspective, getting to know the other’s cultures and differences and similarities, but as time went things got a little more involved. More than a little. She’s a little shy about their relationship on a public level as she’s not royalty, and is a little intimidated by his fan-club, but Sidon doesn’t care at all and will happily parade around with her. He does his best to respect her comfort levels though.
