Theory Time (OMORI SPOILERS AHEAD): Snow Angels parallel the white egret orchids seen throughout parts of Omori. They can only be found in the Hikkikomori Route.
Tumblr media
White Space NPCs and enemies are known to greatly symbolize real-life events and people in the game. Capt. Spaceboy for example is a stand-in for Omori (they both sleep in non-pajama clothes), both go through loss and in his optional second fight, he goes through emotions with far more extreme reactions than other enemies. Omori is the only player character with Tier 3 Emotions: Manic, Miserable, and Furious.
The Snow Angels you see atop Snowglobe Mountain highly resemble the orchids, wings and all. What do orchids symbolize?
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Orchids. Orchids for funeral is not just for beauty! Orchid plants may not look as impressive as a giant arrangement of roses or carnations, but they hold a deep meaning for those that are grieving over the loss of a loved one. At a funeral, an orchid plant symbolizes your everlasting love for the deceased.
https://www.kremp.com/blog/flowers/symbolic-meanings-funeral-flowers#:~:text=with%20her%20tears.-,Orchids,everlasting%20love%20for%20the%20deceased.
But why are angels likened to orchids in White Space?
Angels, while generally being known for spirituality and protection can also double for symbolizing death. The white egret orchids seen outside of Omori’s dream world/aka White Space are shown with Basil’s ailing grandmother and Mari. The enemies in White Space that also have that have the same darker tonal shift songs to them are enemies aligned with death in some way. The ‘???’ enemies that look at the player with one eye resemble SOMETHING in that regard.
Because they parallel Mari’s eye while she was hanged, but was still living.
I also think the Snow Angels are proof that Omori’s trying to repress the events of the day Mari died even deeper. They’re at a fairly out-of-the-way part of Omori’s White Space.
The end of the Hikkokomori Route sees Omori finally moving out with SOMETHING stalking him. He doesn’t tell his friends what really happened, allowing the very culmination of Mari’s death and the guilt along with it to follow him.

28/08/21-Pennington
After seeing a nice group of Linnets walking down from the old trip I took the first picture in this photoset of some when scanning Fishtail lagoon where we were looking for a Little Stint that was said to be at the back of the lagoon and other birds I was thrilled to see a bright reddish insect burst out of a thick bush. I mistook it for a butterfly initially but then realised what it was. A beautiful tiger moth. I knew straight away it wasn’t one of my favourite moths that I am yet to see this year the Scarlet Tiger moth which I have seen on many occasions over the years and been lucky to so am more used to seeing. But I then suspected instantly and confirmed really as I followed it into a nice sheltered area within the bushes that it was a moth I held aspirations to see for a while a stunning Jersey Tiger moth. It was so thrilling to see not only a new moth again lately but a species I had heard of a lot and longed to see. I was so thrilled to get this glorious view of this fine species and see it briefly on the way back too. One of my best moth and summer moments this year, and a milestone moth one in more ways than one as the 50th identified moth to species level I have recorded on my moth life list now and 25th this year. Since I got the iNaturalist Seek app for help with ID and started doing a moth year list again I have noticed and managed to identify so many which has felt like a real revelation of learning and recording something more in 2021 which I am loving a key theme of my year.
Getting down to the shore and I was delighted by a few strong views of a charming raft of Eider pretty close in to shore I got the record shot in the second picture in this photoset of these, with a few of the males sporting traces of their white feathers in the eclipse they are going through in the moulting months. Adding well to my closest ever Hampshire views of Eiders with some so close in at Lymington a bit further along the coast in May in a generally good Eider year for us.
We might not have found the Little Stint but there were many awesome avian moments on the renowned top birding area of fishtail lagoon and the floods at the back and channel beside or looking down into the neighbouring lagoons. Seeing Greenshank, Spotted Redshank, Snipe and a gigantic Great White Egret seen on the next lagoon for the second Saturday running all stars of our big Rutland Water trip this time last week was special. The Great White Egret was very special as it was my first ever seen on this site. I have seen lots reported here but as I watched Little Egrets also on Fishtail lagoon today I reflected how I never seemed to see this bird which is getting so common in Hampshire now here until today with a great view of it standing tall and flying prominently through the air too. An I believe unprecedented for me third Wood Sandpiper in one year was a brilliant bird to see here a few times as well. Ruff and Little Ringed Plover were more top waders to see on the lagoon, and there were some smashing young bird moments as I loved noticing a cute grey young Coot shown in the eighth picture in this photoset up close firstly on the channel then the lagoon and the adorable patchy plumaged young Shelducks with one sweetly shuffling across a shingle island. A Mediterranean Gull getting towards lighter winter plumage, along with the noticeable lack of terns hinted towards autumnal days to come. A headline moment was a divine brown female Sparrowhawk darting over the lagoon which was a very exciting view of a raptor as it flew over the mudflats the other side of the path too.
I noticed some great soapwort aka wild Sweet Williams wonderful pink flowers on the way down to the lagoon and it was great to see sea lavender looking nice as I saw and first learnt when here last in July. My standout flower moment of the walk came just before the Sparrowhawk when I noticed some pretty lilac one of my favourite colours and yellow sea aster growing at the base of the lagoon. One of the flowers I look forward to seeing most especially as we approach late summer which this place is so good for so I was happy to see these as my first of the year of them. Yarrow, carrot, teasel, thistle, ragwort, bindweed and nettles were flowers I enjoyed seeing today too.
I took the third-seventh pictures in this photoset of landscape and sky scenes on the walk a strong walk for them both with some breathtaking scenes around of varied habitats with the mudflats, lagoons, sea, fields and over to the Isle of Wight seeing this really well in the telescope whilst looking at birds. A real smashing coastal habitat as always this place is a real credit to the New Forest, Hampshire and the south. In the fourth picture the tower at Fawley Power Station is just visible. This could be the last picture I take with this prominent Hampshire landmark within as I’ve known its going to be demolished for a long time but someone on a Facebook photography group I am in recently said it was the last night with it being lit up so demolition is presumably imminent.
On the way back to the car in a glorious summer moment I loved noticing an abundance of little birds in a small tree rising to projections on barer branches on the tree to reach out and feed on a noticeable cluster of midges around the tree. The birds were one old world flycatcher doing something like fly catching a Robin who’s feathers were morphing from the streaky brown of juvenile which always looks great into more adult plumage with the iconic red breast present. Starlings flew out of the bush too but these moments were headlined by two types of Whitethroats. At least a couple of the gorgeous brown backed Common Whitethroat, and one deliciously grey Lesser Whitethroat. A year tick for my Mum and a precious and probably also unprecedented second in a year for me which I was very pleased with for one of my birds of the year again. I did enjoy watching these birds in the binoculars, scope and trying for photos with their migration not too far away now. A great end to a very pleasing walk.
Wildlife Sightings Summary: My first ever Jersey Tiger moth, three of my favourite birds the Great White Egret, Little Egret and Shelduck, Mallard, a few nice Teals one more around in autumn and winter, Eider Duck, Coot, lots of mobile Canada Geese which was nice to see, Cormorant, Lapwings very well with some close intimate views of them flying, Black-tailed Godwit, Redshank with one hobbling, Spotted Redshank, Greenshank, Ruff, Oystercatcher, Dunlin, Little Ringed Plover, Snipe, lots of Black-headed Gulls, Mediterranean Gull, Herring Gull, Sparrowhawk, Robin, Whitethroat, Lesser Whitethroat, Linnet, Swallow, lots of Woodpigeons with one seen for a while on a fence post, Collared Dove, Starling, lots of great Pied Wagtails, Linnet, Small White butterfly, midges and I heard a honking Raven. Before going out today I took the ninth picture in this photoset of a lovely yellow flower on the balcony among some other plants I enjoyed on the balcony and I really liked seeing and photographing as I tweeted on Dans_Pictures tonight fuchsia and hebe two stars of the garden flower scene nicely together. On the way back through the garden when home I enjoyed lots more nice flowers especially one of the stunning sunflowers which I got a picture of and tweeted. There were great sky scenes at home tonight too with some nice red towards sunset and I took the tenth and final picture in this photoset out the front among others.

Connections in PreCure Civilian Names (Updated)
If you don’t see a Cure, I found no relevant connection.
Sometimes I looked to Google Translate for help.
These are only connections I’ve noticed on my own. Please let me know which connections I’ve missed!
Honoka Yukishiro (Cure White) - “Yukishiro” means “snow white.”
Hikari Kujo (Shiny Luminous) - “Hikari” is just the literal word for “light,” alluding to her role in the series.
Saki Hyuuga (Cure Bloom/Bright) - “Saki” means “bloom” or “blooming.” “Hyuuga” can mean “facing the sun’s direction”; if you’re wondering what relevance that has, look what type of flower appears in Bloom’s transformation.
Mai Mishou (Cure Egret/Windy) - “shou” can mean “fly,” referring to the egret bird.
Nozomi Yumehara/Cure Dream - “Nozomi” can mean either “hope” or “wish,” as she introduces herself as the Cure of hope (I think). “Yume” means “dream.”
Rin Natsuki/Cure Rouge - “Natsu” means “summer,” referencing her fire powers.
Komachi Akimoto/Cure Mint - “Aki” means “fall,” which could refer to the leaves behind her transformation. But, like, that’s the best I can do with that.
Karen Minazuki/Cure Aqua - It’s not exact, but her last name contains “Mi__zu__” which means “water.”
Love Momozono/Cure Peach - “Momo” can mean either “peach,” or a word for “pink.” “Love” obviously refers to her heart theme.
Miki Aono/Cure Berry - “Aono” means “of blue.” “Miki” is used for a lot of blue magical girls (Sayaka, Mew Mint’s pet dog, the Amulet Spade Chara), though it means “beautiful tree.”
Inori Yamabuki/Cure Pine - “Inori” means “prayer,” referring to her transformation phrase and attacks, where you can hear her use the word.
Setsuna Higashi/Cure Passion - “Higashi” means “East,” referring to her previous role as Eas. “Setsuna” can mean “precious” or “beloved,” possibly referring to her newfound friendships.
Tsubomi Hanasaki/Cure Blossom - “Tsubomi” means “bud,” as in flower bud, and “Hanasaki” means “blooming flower or blossom.”
Yuri Tsukikage/Cure Moonlight - “Yuri” means “lily,” her personal flower, and “Tsukikage” literally translates to “moon shadow,” oddly enough.
Hibiki Hojo/Cure Melody - “Hibiki” means “resound” or “sound” (though “sound” is usually translated as “oto.”) This also goes for Hibiki Tachibana, of course.
Kanade Minamino/Cure Rhythm - “Kanade” means “beautiful sound” or “playing music.” This also goes for Kanade Amou.
Eren Kurokawa/Cure Beat - “Kuro” means “black,” possibly alluding to the fact that Eren used to be a black cat.
Ako Shirabe/Cure Muse - “Shirabe” means “note” or “tune.” This also goes for Shirabe Tsukuyomi.
Miyuki Hoshizora/Cure Happy - “Hoshizora” means “starry sky.” This isn’t a direct reference to her, but a starry sky can be considered a setting for fairy tale.
Akane Hino/Cure Sunny - “Aka” means “red,” which might be a reason why some people list her as a red cure when she is clearly orange. “Hino” means “of fire.” This also goes for Rei Hino.
Yayoi Kise/Cure Peace - “Ki” can mean “yellow,” though I know the translation better as “Kiiro.”
Nao Midorikawa/Cure March - “Midori” means “green.” This also goes for Izuku Midoriya (happy birthday to him, btw).
Reika Aoki/Cure Beauty - “Reika” means “below zero,” according to Google Translate, referring to her ice powers, though the name has multiple meanings; another is “beautiful.” “Ao” means “blue.”
Mana Aida/Cure Heart - “Ai” means “love.”
Rikka Hishikawa/Cure Diamond - “Rikka” also has several meanings, though one is “snow” or “snowflake,” referring to her ice powers.
Makoto Kenzaki/Cure Sword - “Ken” means either “blade” or “sword.”
Megumi Aino/Cure Lovely - “Megumi” can mean “love” or “affection.” “Aino” means “of love.” This also goes for Minako Aino.
Hime Shirayuki/Cure Princess - “Hime” means “princess.” “Shirayuki” means “white snow,” probably alluding to the famous princess.
Yuko Omori/Cure Honey - “mori” means “forest,” maybe referring to her clover theme.
Haruka Haruno/Cure Flora - “Haruno” means “of spring,” referring to the season her element is associated with. The same goes for her first name.
Minami Kaido/Cure Mermaid - “Kaido” doesn’t seem to mean anything relevant, but it’s similar to “Kaioh,” Sailor Neptune’s last name. “Minami” means “south,” though I don’t know if that’s supposed to mean something.
Kirara Amanogawa/Cure Twinkle - From first to last name, it translates literally as “twinkling Milky Way.”
Towa Akagi/Cure Scarlet - “Aka” means “red.”
Mirai Asahina/Cure Miracle - “Mirai” means “future.” I didn’t actually watch all of Mahoutsukai, so I don’t know if that’s relevant.
Kotoha Hanami/Ha/Cure Felice - “Ha” means “leaf,” which is in, like, all of her names. “Hanami” means “flower viewing,” an actual pastime in Japan where people picnic near the newly-bloomed sakura trees.
Ichika Usami/Cure Whip - It’s not exact, but “Usagi means “rabbit,” referring to her animal theme. Thus is where Sailor Moon’s first name comes from.
Himari Arisugawa/Cure Custard - “Hi” can mean “sun,” which is sometimes portrayed as yellow.
Aoi Tategami/Cure Gelato - From first to last name, it translates literally as “blue mane.”
Akira Kenjou/Cure Chocolat - “Akira” contains “ak__a,” which means “red.”
Ciel Kirahoshi/Cure Parfait - “Ciel” is French for “sky.” “Kirahoshi” means “twinkling stars,” which could refer to the ethereal nature of her animal theme, as does Ciel.
Hana Nono/Cure Yell - “Hana” means “flower,” referring to one of her attack themes and part of her outfit.
Saaya Yakushiji/Cure Ange - This one might be a stretch. Yakushi-ji is a Buddhist temple in Japan; its main attraction is “The Medicine Buddha,” which could reference her introducing herself as “Healing everyone!”
Homare Kagayaki/Cure Etoile - “Homare” means “honor,” which could refer to her character arc of self-acceptance. “Kagayaki” means “shining,” referring to her golden-like theme.
Ruru Amour/Cure Amour - “Ruru” is a reference to R.U.R., a 1920s play that brought the word “robot” into modern usage, referring to her true nature. So it’s not Lulu. “Amour” is French for “love,” referring to her and Macherie’s theme.
Emiru Aisaki/Cure Macherie - “Aisaki” means “blooming love.”
Hikaru Hoshina/Cure Star - “Hikaru” means “bright,” “shimmer” or “gleam.” “Hoshi” means “star.”
Lala Hagoromo/Cure Milky - “Hagoromo” refers to a few things, but the anime makes it clear what the fake name specifially refers to. I forget which one, but I think it’s either for a space orbiter or an old Japanese play about a swan maiden.
Elena Amamiya/Cure Soleil - “Elena” is a multilingual name that means “bright” or “shining light,” referring to her sun theme.
Madoka Kaguya/Cure Selene - “Kaguya” refers to a Japanese story involving a princess of the moon.
Yuni/Cure Cosmo - “Yuni” is supposed to refer to how Japan pronounces the word “universe,” in reference to the outer space themes.
Nodoka Hanadera/Cure Grace - “Hana” means “flower.”
Chiyu Sawaizumi/Cure Fontaine - “Chiyu” can mean “healing” or “cure,” though since she’s not the main cure I don’t know why she gets to be named after the season’s main theme. “Sawaizumi” can mean “marsh/stream fountain.”
Hinata Hiramitsu/Cure Sparkle - “Hi” means “sun,” which refers to her bright powers. “Hinata” means “sunny place.” Although not exact, “Hiromitsu” means “wide light.” Interestingly, “mitsu” is a word for “three,” which could reference her being the third Cure in her team.
Asumi Fuurin/Cure Earth - “Asu” is just how the Japanese pronounce the English word “earth.” So Cure Earth’s civilian name is literally the same. “Fuu” means “wind,” referring to her actual element. The same goes for Fuu Hououji.
8/3/20 EDIT: MY ASS COMPLETELY FORGOT ABOUT SPLASH STAR, IM SO SORRY.

Rainbow Six Siege-esque Precure game idea.
The 'Do prepare yourself' catchphrase  in Go Princess PreCure brings into my mind the Preparation Phase in the Rainbow Six games and inspired me to create this.If a Rainbow Six Siege-esque game was set in the Pretty Cure series ,what gadget would the Pretty Cures use? Here are my ideas for which Operator Gadget would the Pretty Cures use and the connection between them and the gadget/operator who uses the gadget in Rainbow Six Siege.Feel free to contribute with your own ideas.
(Now,why would the Cures use gadgets if they have magical powers.Well lets just say that in this scenario the Cure have weaker magical powers than in canon, hence they place a larger emphasis on tactics and teamwork to take down monsters and hence some Cures would bring gadgets to help their team and other Pretty Cures in addition to their powers.)
(The Cures have to transform first into their Cure forms before they can access their gadgets. When the Princess PreCures are in Mode Elegant, they cannot use their gadgets.)
(Yep,Rainbow Six Siege but in Pretty Cure. Both the Cures and the villains also have access to the gadgets used by attacking and defending operators including drones and breaching charges when they attack or wall/hatch reinforcements, barricades (yes,a PreCure whipping out a stapler gun and a rolled up mat of planks and using it to cover up a doorway or window),Nitro Cells and barbed wire when they need to defend (For the villains, they take hostages and other things that the villains do in a magical girl show. For the Cures, they defend a person that the villains have a interest in such as persons that fit the criteria needed for the villains to create a powerful monster from that person or items of interest to the villains. )
Cure Flora:Trax Stingers. Cure Flora is the Princess of Flowers and a deployed Trax Stinger can be likened to a field of flowers at full bloom....if said field of flowers are hexagonal spike mats ready to impale anyone who steps on them. (Cure Flora's version of the Trax Stingers are basically small (0.5 meters in diameter) flat disc-shaped bushes of beautiful roses instead of hexagonal shaped spike mats with thorns pointing up.The thorns retract if they sense a Pretty Cure, friendly or a civilian about to step on them reducing the effect of the Trax Stingers to just a slight prickly feeling on their feet when they step on it.When a servant of Dys Dark steps on them, the spikes shoot up into the foot of that servant, harming them. The 'grenade' that Cure Flora uses to deploy the Trax Stingers differs in appearance in that it has ornate flower engravings instead of the caution stripes of Gridlock's Trax Stingers.) Cure Mermaid: Gryo Cam Mk 2 'Black Eye' Throwable Sticky Cameras. The user of the 'Black Eye' camera in Rainbow Six Siege is Valkyrie who is a Navy SEAL and hence a sailor.Cure Mermaid derives her name from mythological legends of mermaids told by sailors. (Here's how Cures access Cure Mermaid's Black Eye cameras,Cures that use a phone to transform with the exception of Cure Black,Cure White,Cure Bloom/Bright and Cure Egret/Windy would use their transformation devices to directly access the cameras.Other Pretty Cures would carry a phone with them to access the cameras.) Cure Twinkle:Candela Cluster Flashbang Grenades. Cure Twinkle is the Princess of Stars and a Candela going off in Rainbow Six Siege can be likened to twinkling stars that can cause you to go blind temporary if you look at them. Cure Scarlet:Exothermic Breaching Torch. The user of the Breaching Torch in Siege is Maverick who according to the game's lore was MIA for a long period of time.Similarly Towa (aka Cure Scarlet.) was missing from the Hope Kingdom for a long period of time, brainwashed into Dyspear's 'daughter', Twillight before she became Cure Scarlet. Cure Gelato:EE-ONE-D Aerial Surveillance Drone. Cure Gelato has a sonic roar which can stun enemies.Similarly the EE-ONE-D can stun enemies in a way when activated by forcing them to stay still or else their movements will be detected. Also note that Oliver Flament who uses the EE-ONE-D in Siege has the codename of 'Lion' and Cure Gelato is partially based of a lion in design. (The way the EE-ONE-D works is slightly different here. When Cure Gelato activates the scan function on the EE-ONE-D,information about movement activity are displayed on the transformation devices or cellphones of the Pretty Cures and the wrist display that Cure Gelato uses to monitor the functions of EE-ONE-D in the form of red dots displaying movement instead of a wallhack as seen in game) Cure Chocolat:Eyenox Model III Footprint Tracker. Cure Chocolat is partially based off a dog in design and dogs are known for their sense of smell which is used for tracking. The Eyenox tracks people in a similar way by scanning their footprints and pinging the owner of the footprints. Cure March:Airjab Grenades (Hand-thrown variant.). Cure March has powers over wind and a strong gust of wind can knock people off their feet if it's strong enough.Airjab Grenades in Siege do the exact same thing as well. Cure Peace: Crude Electrical Device-1/Shock Wires. Cure Peace has powers over electricity and the Shock Wires used by Bandit in Rainbow Six Siege electrify metallic gadgets. Also note that the operator,Bandit shares a similar colour scheme with Cure Peace's Bad End Kingdom counterpart;Bad End Peace. Shiny Luminous: G52 Flash Shield. Shiny Luminous has powers over light and often uses it to support her teammates,Cure Black and Cure White by creating barriers of light.Blitz in Rainbow Six Siege does the same thing by using the Flash Shield to absorb bullets and flashing enemies with the flashbangs on his flash shield. Cure Aqua:Electronics Detector (Built into Pinky Catch.). Cure Aqua is known as the Pretty Cure of Intelligence. The user of the Electronics Detector in Rainbow Six Siege is IQ who derives her codename from a measure of intelligence. Cure Lovely: Tactical Breaching Hammer. Cure Lovely is memetically known for her brutal fighting style.Similarly in Siege,Sledge is known for his equally brutal breaching method as he uses a sledgehammer to smash into unreinforced surfaces. Cure Melody:"Yokai" Hover Drone. Cure Melody's civillian identity's (Hibiki Hojo) given name means "Echo" in Japanese and the operator who uses the Yokai Drone in Rainbow Six Siege is codenamed Echo. (Cure Melody controls the Yokai using her Cure Module instead of a wrist display that Echo uses.)
Lines sometimes said by Pretty Cures when deploying/ activating their gadgets. Cure Flora: "Trax Stingers in full bloom!" Cure Mermaid: "New camera feed up and running!" Cure Twinkle: "Time to twinkle some eyes!" Cure Scarlet: "Torch is a-go." Cure Gelato: "EE-ONE-D scanning for prey!" Cure Chocolat: "You better start running." Cure March: "Airjab out!" Cure Peace: "Placed device!" Shiny Luminous: "Hearts of light and wills of light for them to become blind!" Cure Aqua: "Deploying Pinky Catch ! If it runs on batteries,I'll see it!" Cure Lovely: "Who needs explosives when you got the power of love and a hammer?" Cure Melody: "Yokai deployed and ready to give hostiles a performance!"

09/05/2021-Fantastic Farlington Marshes: Three W birds, Painted Lady and more
We arrived at Farlington Marshes this afternoon and I loved taking in the nice familiar smells of the coast. There were some interesting cloud formations about this afternoon as a soft sun poked through as bits lifted and this looked very beautiful especially over the reedbeds. The third picture I took today in this photoset shows this. I was also delighted to take in as we arrived and enjoy it before we went too a sea of yellow oilseed rape along the bank here I’d never seen it here before. I took the first picture in this photoset showing this. As this so often does this stood out in the landscape a lot too I liked seeing it stand out against the prominent landmark of Portsdown Hill when out in the marshes. There is a field within a prominent couple of hills I always love seeing when coming here which was nice and yellow too. It was nice to zoom into one and take a macro picture as well and see some ragwort and Alexanders aka horse parsley by the car park. We looked over the lake and saw lots of interesting birds such as Shelducks with some flying. I also took the second picture in this photoset here.
As we were stood looking over amazingly a bright Painted Lady butterfly flew in, landed in front of us on the grass for a bit and flew off towards a bush. This was a stunning moment with a very colourful butterfly. I was hoping we might be efficient and pick up a/some butterfly specie/s we needed today at this mostly bird reserve but rich in grassland too you can see butterflies I’ve learnt so much the past few years to get some into the weekend especially with the sun out now. Not knowing whether it would stay overcast or not I brought my macro lens which I use for butterflies with me though I had a feeling I’d need it today I wasn’t able to take a Painted Lady picture but I did need it eventually. But the Painted Lady was by far the earliest ever sighting I’d got of one in a year. I usually see them in June, July and August the latter was when I saw my first of 2020 here. So to see one in early May was phenomenal. We spoke to some people later on that had seen some so I think they may have been hitting this coastal location coming into the country butterflies known for their migration. It felt rewarding once more to submit my sighting to Butterfly Conservation’s Migrant watch: https://butterfly-conservation.org/our-work/recording-and-monitoring/migrant-watch there’s a few in already seemingly by the coast mostly. This sighting felt so valuable for my butterfly year getting one I usually wait a bit longer for and don’t always see in a year so this was special taking my year list to 16 keeping that tickling along nicely competing with what I’d seen at this stage in my past years like I’m doing for birds. I took the fourth picture in this photoset after walking on.
The main bird we’d come to try and see today was a Wood Sandpiper that had been reported, and we spoke to a kind gentleman that had not seen it. We walked along to the stream bit with a bench nearby and the man went back there and neither of us had seen it. But then at the edge of the water nearer to the cottage we scanned and saw a fair few birds and the man came and picked it up and kindly showed us. It was a sensational view of this very smart and colourful wader. It was a joyful view minutes watching this bird, only my sixth ever sighting of one and like the Painted Lady my earliest ever sighting of one in a year this one I tend to see over the summer or into autumn when I do.
As we walked on it was great to see loads of Swallows flying around some very closely overhead and see some land on a fence which I tweeted a picture of on Dans_Pictures tonight it was more great views of them this year. We had the same experience for Mediterranean Gulls with lots heard nicely and seen today I tweeted a photo of those too. There were three smashing Wheatear out in a field too we’ve had a good year for them so far. I took the views in the fifth and sixth pictures in this photoset as we walked round.
We then looked over to the field in the telescope and binoculars to try and catch sight of the Russian White-fronted Goose which had been around. We were so thrilled that we did spot it with a Canada Goose, I was so happy to see it this is a monumental bird for us to see and one of my birds of the year so far. It was wonderful to see its sweet brown plumage, dinky size and white on the beak fusing nicely into the pink. Its only the third I’ve ever seen in Hampshire after here in 2011 and Harbridge near Blashford Lakes in 2017. It felt like a big moment I will always look back on today. Whilst watching this bird we got chatting to a very lovely couple and it was brilliant to be able to show them the bird having a lovely chat about a lot we had in common it was a wonderful moment we met some great people again today at a safe social distance.
Also whilst watching I spotted some Brown-tail moth caterpillars on the vegetation, and we saw some more further up too. Despite since learning they are toxic I enjoyed seeing them and found them beautiful, its the first I recall seeing too. It was great to use the macro lens on these, I took the seventh and eighth pictures in this photoset of these.
Walking on I liked seeing some vetch a very nice flower and it was nice to see a straggling Brent Goose they have all mostly migrated by now and Common Tern made a lovely sight too with a few flying on very nice to see them as always I’ve had a good couple of weeks for terns. I managed the ninth picture in this photoset of an interesting sky.
Just before the end we made it a year tick hat trick and completed the WWW by as we had hoped by hearing they were around here with the tide out being told by other nice people and knowing they could be here seeing a Whimbrel out in the mudflats. It was lovely to get a glimpse of its slick plumage and lovely bill. We had seen one that may have been one on the grass earlier on but couldn’t quite tell. This is an unprecedented I think third year list of mine running a Whimbrel appears on and my second year running seeing them for the first time of the year at Farlington Marshes after 2nd January 2020. Its another of my birds of the year so far and three top drawer year ticks, brilliant to get that many in a day once more lately, have taken my year list to 153 back up to being the third highest number of birds I’d seen on this date behind my 2018 and 2019 my two highest ever totals going ahead of 2014 where on 5th May that year I got 10 year ticks so this did overtake this year for a few days as my year goes from strength to strength.
I left very happy with what we had seen and when home today in a shower I took the tenth and final picture in this of wet flowers in the garden alongside another couple I tweeted tonight I have enjoyed wet flower a bit lately. This ends another packed, wild and very enjoyable weekend for me, thanks for all your support during it and I hope you have a good week.
