A lot of people show disdain for two dimensional characters. Often they are called flat and not as interesting as a three dimensional character. But I myself don’t really have a problem with two dimensional characters. My favorite villains of all are both Hades from Hercules 1997 and Mandy (the black haired purple eyed mean girl) from Totally Spies. True neither villain have much depth. True Hades portrayal downright contradicts the original myths. True Mandy was never anything really more than the high school rival and menace. But Hades is a charmingly sleazy host with an excellent performance by James Woods, while Mandy has a decent fashion sense, and a barrage of sassy comebacks, and a memorably shrill laugh. Plus with Mandy’s lack of depth, it opens the door to come up with many interpretations of her character. Maybe she’s just pure evil (as the fandom mostly agrees), maybe she’s just a lonely rich girl (as some circles believe), maybe she’s not as bad as the show makes her off as (the podcast Totally Reprise goes by this). This could be fun for adaptations. You just can’t do this with three dimensional characters, you have to be specific in order to stay true to said characters. Likewise if you look at the animated series, Hades had a lot of variety in regards to his villainy, be it trying to put the gods to sleep by making a play about himself, etc. tricking Poseidon into giving him control of Athens, trying to get Zeus and Hera into having a marriage crisis, taking advantage of the Tapestry of Fate to become Olympus’ Top God, etc. And even he’s not all that bad, he was kind enough to tell Cassandra how to bring Icarus to life and honor his deals with Medusa and Meg about turning the former into a human and freeing the latter of his service. Compare that to Ursula, who always planned on backstabbing Ariel. And his lack of depth is well filled in by James Woods’ hilarious and intoxicating performance. Yes there are far more intelligent and deeper, and more menacing villains like Doctor Doom, Bane, and Poison Ivy but IDK villains like Hades and Mandy are more fun and offer lots of story opportunities. A close runner up for choice of favorite villain has to be easily Darkseid. Technically Thanos is the deeper villain be it his love for death or in the MCU a desire to save the universe, but the “less developed” Darkseid is simply more terrifying and memorable, what with his hellish tyrannical vision and ruthless will to inflict it on everybody, and his menacing design (and sometimes voice). Likewise some characters are simply better when there is a mystery to them, it’s unknown what their concrete origin is nor what their true motives are. It’s why Dracula and Joker are so prominent in media, there are thousands of ways to interpret their characters. The idea that Dracula in the original novel was actually Vlad the Impaler is not really an interesting idea, it’s more tolerable when it’s simply an adaptation. Although the backstory for the Joker by Tim Burton and Paul Dini is not a bad one, and is certainly more credible than Alan Moore’s. The Joker was just simply already bad as a gangster and the whole chemical transformation just gave him the excuse to fake insanity and make his criminal exploits more creative, it’s a lot more interesting than the whole “he’s crazy*” trope. And in some cases adding more depth can actually hurt the character. There was a confession about how Rob Zombie’s Halloween and later seasons of ATLA ruined Michael Myers and Azula (actually there’s a lot of confessions about her as of recent) by trying to make them deep; and having seen both in the last month (as well as Halloween II) for the first time, it proves that just because it’s deeper doesn’t mean it’s better. I wouldn’t say it “ruined” Myers, seeing as it was a different canon and already was there an odd twist about a cult and magic in the original series, but yeah the “sad and tortured” Myers as envisioned by Rob Zombie was far less effective than the original vision in 1978, especially when the points to make him sympathetic amounted to creepypasta tier wangst, and Myers came out more like an emo wussy wuss wuss and WTF was with the white horse in Halloween II. So the cereal killer had a sad childhood and just wants to be with his sis. Yawn. But oh YEAH did the latter half of Book Three utterly **** up Azula. The Beach was okay. Seeing a normally menacing villain try to act in normal situations, those situations are always fun. If they kept the mom thing to that one line it would have been cool, “Hidden Depths” and all. But the revelation that she was a lonely girl who secretly wanted love but tried to achieve it though fear and then flips her shit when they betray her came out of nowhere and didn’t really make sense. Sure Ty Lee was scared but Mai was previously apathetic, HUGGED azula affectionally in their first scene, joined her because she was bored, and was not afraid to lash out in her in the Beach. But the biggest problem was it downgraded her from a smart, resourceful and capable badass to the dreaded (and tired) generic psycho just to supposedly give her more depth and provide a convenient way for the heroes to defeat her. Imagine Zuko and Katara trying to fight the Fire Nation Generals, the Dai Li in addition to a comet powered, competent, and still persistent Azula all at once. That would have been epic! But no the writers then decide to provide a copout suddenly say “she’s crazy*” and because of this she banishes all the soldiers like a moron, strikes out at Katara (and therefore already forfeiting the Agni Kai because the rules are you must not strike out at observers, a dishonorable move), and the final scene is of her in chains frothing like a “maniac”, what a disgraceful way to send off the one who conquered Ba Sing Se. Oh and of course, a typical one an one fight even though there was already a one and one fight with Aang and Ozai which also sucked. I didn’t read the sequel comics, but what I heard online, apparently she devised a convoluted and stupid plan that for some reason involves kidnapping children, all to make Zuko a better Fire Lord by “controlling through fear”… even though controlling through fear is EXACTLY what led to her downfall the last time! Did she just forget what happened! Oh and the Search apparently had her whining about her mother, and this may be because I’m early to ATLA and it’s fandom at this point but I’ve yet to see any fans or fanfics who don’t make Azula all about her mother. Mother this! Mother that! We get it already, she has problems with her mother! But I can’t blame the writers of the comics entirely since they had to go with bullshit canon, it’s exactly like how the MCU handles things. Sorry for the extended rant, but Sozin’s Comet was really ******* bad. One day I’ll make a confession about how bad it was, including the Aang vs Ozai fight But really, Michael Myers and Azula are really two different examples of characters who didn’t need to have (too much) depth added. Michael is very fine as a dark and malevolent serial killer who may or may not have supernatural qualities, and who people call “The Boogeyman”. Even the whole “Michael is Laurie’s brother” twist wasn’t terrible in the original 1981 Halloween II, it still didn’t explain exactly why he killed the other sister, Laurie’s friends, as well as the others in that same 1981 film! The Azula as shown in Book 2 may have been “two dimensional” but with her competence and intelligence she could have been the forefront of some very interesting future stories about political intrigue and all. As opposed to the finale and comics which just used the “insanity” excuse to put the character in different directions that had nothing to do with her. She could have been someone like Ra’s Al Ghul or Doom, a villain who can match the heroes with her wits and who has some “Hidden Depths” underneath. The Beach alone was perfect for that, show her being awkward and unable to socialize while being undercover. There was still more to the “two dimensional” Azula as shown in Book 2 than solely her mother or supposed “insanity”. *Also neither the Joker in most cases nor Azula represent any real facets of mental illness, it’s just some bullshit by writers who don’t understand mental health. Speaking of “deep does not mean better”... no, Zack Snyder’s Vision of the DCEU, The Boys, and basically any other “dark and edgy” take on superheroes is not automatically better than the MCU (as problematic as that is) and any lighthearted or optimistic superhero work just because it’s darker and therefore ****** deeper. Darker and Edgier is not something you do at a whim even for this. Superheroes are not just these dark and brooding tortured souls, the whole genre is just not some “profound examination into the bleakness or darkness of life” and the writers need to remember that. Is a Superman who brooding at his alien nature and lack of humanity deeper? Sure. Is a Wonder Woman whose entitled, harsh, nasty, and thirsts for blood and battle deeper? Maybe? But just because it’s a “deeper” version of the characters does not mean it’s better, in fact is outright contradicts the characters so much you might as well come up with entirely new characters. Oh wait, that’s what The Boys did. What makes heroes like Superman, Wonder Woman, and Sora (Kingdom Hearts) so strong and memorable as heroes aside from their powers is their hearts. Their compassion for other beings. The willingness to stand up for those who can’t really do so themselves. That’s what makes them work as characters. They don’t need to be three-dimensional. They’re the type of characters we either aspire to be, or wish were around to help us in real life. But yeah, TLDR having “deep characters” and stories don’t need to be the de facto rule for storytelling. Frodo and Sam were the heart of LOTR in spite of all the deeper characters elsewhere. Hades and Mandy are fun villains, and Sora, Diana of Themyscira, and Superman all work just fine AS THEY TRULY ARE. Heroes or villains, two-dimensional characters can be either simply fun, be the source of interesting stories and plots, or simply still have heart worked into them or have hearts. The best Disney movies are not the ones that are “deep”, it’s the one with heart.

for lake's first christmas the cosays get them and jesse a huge (like 4ft long) white tailed deer plush (to share) and no lake did not cry, thank you very much. (yes, alan dracula II lives in their room and yes, they do both cuddle him nearly every single night.)

I just feel like even though they'd have to spend a lot of money all of a sudden providing for another child, jesse's parents would still give their kids a good christmas. lake tries to insist they don't really want anything but with jesse's help his parents manage to get a few ideas out and since lake's requests were all reasonable (mostly clothes and art supplies), they get basically everything they asked for. lake gets kinda overwhelmed and starts crying and at first it seems like a bad cry but they assure everyone it's not they're just really, really grateful for everything.

Smutty Blog Introduction

Hello fellow earthlings! I’ve been debating for a while now on whether or not to become more active on this platform. Given the short nature (ish) of the content here, it seems like a good option given that I’m currently quite busy with Uni and other life stuff in general, but still feel that writer’s itch and wish to write down thoughts and ideas to explore some creative avenues. Now, for that to happen, I’m more than happy to take requests, given that I’m a part of quite a few fandoms. I’ll also add the characters I’d be willing to write for, so you guys get an idea as to what to expect.

That being said, this is a blog largely dedicated to all the smutty fics I come up with, so it’ll mostly be one-shots, drabbles, headcannons, NSWF alphabets, etc. I reserve the right to not write certain stuff because, well, I might not be into it (this includes underage stuff and noncon, straight off the bat, sorry, that’s just how it is). Other than that, please feel free to send me an ask of a request. Under the cut are a list of characters I’ll happily write for since I’ve watched/binged the show and have plenty of inspo for them. Superman #83 (November 1993)

Funeral for a Friend: uh, that one Green Lantern supporting character who died when Coast City got blown up (Joe? Gary?). In this issue DC’s superheroes pay tribute to the tragedy of Coast City while also deciding what the hell to do with the giant engine that’s now in its place. Weird early ‘90s Hawkman! Dr. Fate with boobs! Already-slightly-psychotic Hal Jordan! EVERYONE IS HERE.

(Nice one, Guy.)

Meanwhile, Lex Luthor Jr. is also sneaking around Engine City, supposedly to prevent it from falling into the ocean and killing some of Aquaman’s friends, but in reality he just wants to look into the Cyborg Superman’s computer to see if he can find a recipe for making kryptonite. As the heroes argue about what to do with Engine City (Hal says drop it into the water, screw the fish), some leftover Warworld aliens start attacking them, like the holdout Japanese soldiers who never found out WWII was over.

The attack precipitates the city’s fall into the water and the heroes have to think fast to prevent a fish holocaust. Their solution is for all the Green Lantern-related characters (Hal Jordan, Guy Gardner, Alan Scott, Alan’s daughter Jade) to “detoxify” the debris with their powers before it falls into the ocean. And it works! These guys should totally open a carpet cleaning business.

As for Lex Jr., he does find the recipe for kryptonite inside the crumbling city, but just as he’s about to write it down (he wasn’t carrying any floppy disks, apparently), Supergirl yanks him out of there to prevent him from burning alive. What an unsupportive girlfriend. Anyway, Superman then takes some of the debris and builds a giant memorial for Coast City’s 6,999,999 anonymous lost souls, and Gary. Sweet Gary. You will be missed.

Creator-Watch:

If the art looks different that’s because this is the first issue inked by Joe Rubinstein, ending Brett Breeding’s classic two and a half year run as Dan Jurgens’ main inker (so classic that it feels a lot longer than that). Breeding will be back for Superman/Doomsday: Hunter/Prey and other stuff, though. As for Rubinstein, Don says: “At the time, I had trouble with the transition, being soused to Brett Breeding’s finishes over Jurgens’ pencils, but looking at it now, the art looks great. It doesn’t look as smooth or blocky as Breeding’s finishes, but Rubinstein’s hatchier style serves Jurgens pretty well, even if it takes some getting used to.”

Plotline-Watch:

At the start of the issue, Superman goes to pick up Batman to take him to Coast City, only to find him wearing a different costume, acting differently, and sounding like a different guy. That’s because that’s not really Bruce Wayne in the suit anymore, but the replacement he got after Bane broke his back. That’s right: freakin’ Psi-Phon and Dreadnaught.

Superman gives a speech about how superheroes must work together to prevent another tragedy like Coast City from happening, but when Guy asks him if that means he’s going back to the Justice League, he’s like “uh, not yet.” Wisely, he’s gonna wait for Grant Morrison to get there first.

Hal Jordan’s characterization in this issue is interesting. In Green Lantern #47 (which came out the same month), he’s bummed about Coast City but still hopeful and serene, while here he’s already going Parallax on us. Wonder if Dan Jurgens knew more about what DC was planning for Hal than the other comic’s writer.

There’s a cute scene where Superman is flying by Kansas on his way to Coast City and quickly drops some flowers for Ma Kent. (That, or Flash picked this moment to hit on a random older woman.)

Former TV exec/crime boss Morgan Edge has released an autobiography where he trashes the Daily Planet’s Cat Grant for using her sexiness (and, you know, sex) to get dirt on him and send him to jail. He also accuses Cat of being a crappy mother to her son Adam. He kind of has a point there, because what kind of mom would let her kid play with an Atari in the early ‘90s?! The SNES and the Genesis were already out!

Believe it or not, Morgan Edge’s pervy dad in that screenshot above isn’t the creepiest thing in that scene. Don: “Very spooky how the guy dangling outside of Cat’s apartment goes without mention. An ominous foreshadow of one of the very few missteps of Jurgens’ run.”

But the most ominous part of the issue is at the end, when Clark Kent accepts Jimmy Olsen’s offer to become roomies, since Clark lost his apartment on account of being dead and all. Don wants you to know that “Jimmy is still in that towel by the way” in the scene below. I hope.

Art-Watch (by @donsparrow):

Another classic issue, and such a nice wrap-up to the "Death and Return" storyline (as well as being a much-needed check-In on the DC Universe at large). We start with the cover, and it’s a very good one, letting the reader know right away that it’s a big team-up issue. (It also is a real showcase for 90s costume design, and how weird the JLA lineup was at this point).

The opening splash is a neat image of a rarely seen pairing, Superman and Commissioner Gordon. Jurgens draws James Gordon a little heavier and more Pa-Kent like than I’m used to seeing him, but it’s still neat to see him interacting with Superman. A page later, we get another rare pairing—the returned Superman with the imposter Batman, Jean-Paul Valley. The tension in the interaction between “AzBats” and Superman comes across well in their exchange, as does Superman’s doubts about who he was really speaking to.

It’s a dreamy looking Superman crossing the country from Metropolis to Coast City, and I daresay that they’re trying to channel Dean Cain a little as he approaches Kansas.

The best panel of the issue though is the two page spread of all the heroes gathering at the wreckage of Coast City, and there’s so much to love here. The body language, and facial expressions speak volumes about each of the characters: Superman looking swashbuckling and upbeat, Green Lantern brooding like a man barely holding on, Green Arrow all attitude and shadow. Just a great spread.

Another cool image is Aquaman showing up late, and emerging very royally in protection of his ocean (undercut masterfully by a legitimately funny couple of lines from Guy Gardner). Page 14’s Hal Jordan is a great drawing, and this whole storyline seems like a table setter for the "Emerald Twilight" story coming up.

The sequence of a firelit Luthor at the computer is a good look at his madness, but it does beg the question of just how little Supergirl seems to take in. He was JUST talking aloud about Kryptonite, and she emerges seeming not to hear. The image of Supergirl flying Lex away as he struggles against her psychic grab is a good one, even if her uniform is depicted as a little clingier than I imagine it to really be.

Superman floating above his obelisk with his arm in front of his face like Dracula is a cool look, even if it is a little dramatic.

Lastly, the image of Clark turning up the stereo is a good one, even if his hair length is wildly shorter here than in Coast City (and I usually dislike it when they mention real world bands, as it comes off trying too hard to be hip).

STRAY OBSERVATIONS:

I have to love how meta it is to have Superman outright saying that Batman is dressing more “threatening” these days, on page 2. I guess he couldn’t come right out and say “you have an extreme new look, and it’s totally badass! Batman the next generation!”

Last we saw of Supergirl she was storming out of the party on Lex’s Zeppelin after Lex II was getting all horned up at the sight of Lois Lane, but it appears here they’ve mostly patched things up as they fly to Coast City.

More meta-stuff: Jimmy clunkily complimenting Lois on her new hair by saying she “oughta be on TV or something!”. This whole exchange is very expository, really, “Clark must be pretty mad… though he’s busy worrying about where he’s going to bunk…” Anything else to get in there, Jimmy?

The harshness some of the heroes have for Lex Junior seems a little out of place, especially since he’s still known to most of the heroes as an ally from "Panic in the Sky", and the "Doomsday" storyline. Superman’s comment was borderline, but where is all this anger Flash is showing coming from?

Being as familiar as we are with these writers, there are certain phrases or ideas that a certain writer will go to way, way too often. Byrne had a number of stories where Superman would “ionize” something with his heat vision, and it occurred to me that maybe he just liked that word. I would submit that Dan Jurgens likes the word “atomize”. It was used by the Cyborg Superman when talking about Doomsday, and is used a bunch just in this issue.

I find it hilarious that Hawkman appears so prominently in this issue, but doesn’t get any lines. This issue is an interesting time capsule—I had almost forgotten about the de-aged Starheart powered Alan Scott era.

Speaking of lines, they don’t give Captain Marvel much to do in this issue, but I always like seeing him, even if his only contribution is the odd “Holy Moley!”

Colouring error on page 12, where Hal’s ring has a red centre (maybe the colourist had Alan Scott’s red and green look on the brain?)

A raging Hal standing by Green Arrow is a sad foreshadowing of their confrontation to come in Zero Hour.

Jesse and Lake getting a brown and white Great Dane and naming him Alan Dracula. Maybe around Christmas they dress him up as a reindeer

Jesse begs Lake they get his name legally recognized in writing as “Alan Dracula II” because it looks all old-timey and vampire like to have roman numerals in his name. Lake agrees if only because she agrees they can’t just disrespect the original Alan Dracula like that by pretending that their dog is the OG.

I’m sure they’d dress him up in reindeer ears for Halloween, too, because who says they can’t have AD around for Halloween? “Deer don’t just disappear after Christmas, that’s not how it works” is their go-to excuse when people outside of the family ask about it. (They’d probably just tell Nate about Alan Dracula the First diectly, since he’s the most likely to believe them). They would, on the other hand, switch up his halloween costume from his christmas time outfit by adding little jingle bells to his collar. Y’gotta switch things up to avoid questions sometimes, you know?

You thought movies were the only place to get your daily dose of horror? Oh you fool! You absolute FOOL! There are plenty of bingeworthy and scary horror TV shows out there and Hulu just happens to be a great place to find them.

Hulu is home to recent hits like The Terror and Castle Rock but there are still more scares to be found for the horror enthusiast willing to dig deep. Gathered here are some of the best and scariest horror TV shows that Hulu has to offer.

The Terror

Based on a 2007 book of the same name by Dan Simmons, The Terror season 1 tells a fictionalized account of Captain Sir John Franklin’s expedition to the arctic in 1845. In real life, the doomed men likely got lost and succumbed to the cold but the show asks “what if there was something more sinister than low temperatures lurking about?”

The Terror features a cast impressively full of “hey it’s that guy” guys like Jared Harris, Ciarán Hindis, and Tobias Menzes. It deftly turned itself into an anthology with the second season The Terror: Infamy that tells a ghost story within the setting of a Japanese interment camp in World War II.

American Horror Story

Ryan Murphy’s American Horror Story is revolutionary in quite a few ways. Not only did it help usher in a renewed era of anthology storytelling on television, it also was arguably the first successful network television horror show since The X-Files.

Like all anthologies, American Horror Story has its better seasons (season 1 a.k.a. Murder House, season 2 a.k.a. Asylum, season 6 a.k.a. Roanoke) and its worse (season 3 a.k.a. Coven and season 8 a.k.a. Apocalypse). Still, for nine years and counting, American Horror Story has been one of the go-to options for TV horror fans.

Castle Rock

Stephen King properties have made their way to television before. There have been miniseries for classic King texts like The Stand and ‘Salem’s Lot and even full series for works like Rose Red and Under the Dome. Still, none of those series has had the audacity to adapt multiple aspects of the Stephen King universe itself…until Castle Rock.

Castle Rock takes multiple characters, storylines, and concepts from the vast works of Stephen King and puts them all in King’s own Castle Rock, Maine. The first season featured inmates from Shawshank prison, extended family of Jack Torrance, and maybe even a touch of the shine. The show opened itself up for more storytelling possibilities in season 2, adopting an anthology format and bringing Annie Wilkes into the fold.

The Twilight Zone

The Twilight Zone is an all-time television classic for good reason. Join Rod Serling each episode for a new tale of mystery, horror and woe.

Are you in the mood to watch something spooky this Halloween? Grab some pillows and pop the popcorn! Halloween is the perfect time to sit on the sofa with friends (or alone if you’re brave) to watch a horror movie or two. Why not use this opportunity to practice your English listening skills as well?

There are tons of good and bad horror movies out there on Netflix, Hulu, or your other favorite streaming service. With so many options to choose from, you might not know where to start. So here’s a list of important horror movies from the past five decades to get you started. Keep in mind that these movies are adult-oriented. That means you should make sure the kids are asleep before you start watching. Happy viewing!

Horror Movies to Watch

1970s

The Exorcist (1973)

This supernatural horror film by William Friedkin— which is based on William Peter Blatty’s novel that is in turn loosely based on true events—has often been called the greatest horror movie ever made. It deserves the praise.

The film centers on a priest who is called to examine a young girl’s disturbing behavior. Her mother can’t find any medical or scientific explanation, and the priest concludes that the young girl, named Reagan, is showing signs of demonic possession. The priest requests the Catholic Church to send an expert priest to perform an exorcism (a religious ritual to remove an evil spirit from a person’s body). The devilish ordeal unfolds over the rest of the film.

The film famously uses complex visual and audio special effects as well as a chilling soundtrack to achieve moments of terror and disbelief. It has many memorable scenes, and the acting is excellent. If you only watch one film from this list, I recommend this one.

Halloween (1978)

John Carpenter directed and scored (wrote the music for) this genre-defining slasher film, which has led to many sequels and remakes. This includes the highly-praised 2018 direct sequel with the original lead actress, Jamie Lee Curtis, reprising (performing again) her role.

The film tells a story of an escaped mental institution patient named Michael Meyers who stalks and kills teenage babysitters in a small town one Halloween night. One by one, the babysitters fall until the last girl remains and fights back with everything she has.

Although it wasn’t the first in the slasher horror genre, Halloween is a hugely influential movie, paving the way and creating a blueprint for other slasher horror films like Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th. Carrie (1976)

Carrie would the first of many film adaptations of novelist Stephen King’s bestselling work. In fact, Carrie was King’s first published novel.

Brian De Palma directed this story of supernatural suspense and horror about a seventeen-year-old girl who is bullied in high school. One day, she discovers that she has telekinetic powers (the ability to move objects with her mind). She uses this power to take revenge on the cruel classmates who humiliated her. The prom night scene is one of the most famous moments in the history of horror movies.

1980s

Creepshow (1982)

The best thing about Creepshow is that you don’t have to watch the whole film to enjoy it. The film comprises (consists of) five short dark comedy horror stories written by Stephen King and directed by George Romero. Creepshow isn’t a particularly good film by acting or film-making standards. It has the feeling of a comic book. Still, horror movie lovers will find a lot to enjoy here. It’s not too silly to be called a comedy, and it’s not too serious to be truly scary.

The Evil Dead (1981)

The Evil Dead follows five college students who stay the night in a cabin in a remote part of a forest. In the cabin, they listen to an audio tape which summons demons which possess their bodies. This film has a lot of gory (showing lots of violence or blood) special effects and make-up, which may be disturbing for some viewers.

Despite the very low budget used to make it, The Evil Dead lives on as a critical and fan favorite in the genre. The tight story drives viewers through a terrifying plot that gets more gruesome and tense with each passing scene.

The director, Sam Raimi, and lead actor, Bruce Campbell, went on to create two direct sequels, The Evil Dead II and Army of Darkness. Campbell plays the main role in both. Both sequels take a more comic approach than the first film. Developing a close relationship through their partnership, Campbell appears as a cameo character in all of Raimi’s films. Look for him in the Sam Raimi Spiderman trilogy films.

The Thing (1982)

John Carpenter made this science fiction horror film about a group of American researchers in Antarctica. They encounter “the thing”, an alien parasite which can take the shape of and imitate any person or creature which it absorbs. The researchers must fight against the parasite creature and their own sense of paranoia (false belief that other people are trying to harm you). The story becomes grimmer as the researchers lose trust in each other and realize that any of them could be an imitation. Kurt Russel plays one of the main characters here.

Although the film was released to negative reviews, it has grown in popularity over the years and is now considered a horror classic. It has been praised for its very impressive special effects and slow but steadily increasing suspense.

The alien is a terrible creature, but the main fear is not knowing which character is still human.

1990s

Bram Stoker’s Dracula (1992)

Francis Ford Coppola directed this international renowned Gothic horror film which won Academy Awards for costume design, makeup, and sound editing. The story, of course, is a classic, based on the 1897 novel by Bram Stoker that built up the lore (traditional knowledge and beliefs) and mystery of Dracula, Van Helsing, and the vampire fantasy genre. Gary Oldman’s performance of Vlad Dracula might be the most impressive part of this film, but don’t ignore the excellent costumes, make-up effects, and background sets. Don’t miss out on Bram Stoker’s Dracula. It does a great job of telling this classic story in a unique way.

Francis Ford Coppola is a central figure in cinema, known especially for The Godfather series and Apocalypse Now.

Event Horizon (1997)

This science fiction horror film directed by Paul W.S. Anderson occurs in distant space. A group of astronauts go on a rescue mission near the planet Neptune when they suddenly find the Event Horizon, a spaceship that has long been missing. They board (get into or onto) the Event Horizon and discover that the entire crew is gone. They also find out that the ship’s engine is designed to open passages to another dimension. As they continue to look for the missing crew members, they realize that there is an evil presence on the ship.

Sam Neill is widely known for his role as Dr. Alan Grant in Jurassic Park. But he actually played a major role in Event Horizon and several other horror films—including another on this list, In the Mouth of Madness.

Scream (1996)

Scream is a slasher film directed by Wes Craven. The film stars a group of 90s TV and film celebrities (including Drew Barrymore, Neve Campbell, Courteney Cox, and others) who play high school students. A knife-wielding murderer wearing a ghost mask terrorizes the group, killing them off one by one. The film combines slasher horror with comedy and mystery elements. It also satirizes (makes fun of) clichés (common situations or characters) within the horror genre. The movie was very popular when it was released, and a series of sequels and films with similar stories were released thereafter.

2000s

Trick ‘r Treat (2007)

Trick ‘r Treat is an anthology (collection of art) film like Creepshow. It offers four different Halloween stories, but there is one character that appears across each of them. Every time one of the characters breaks a “rule” of Halloween, the character Sam shows up to show teach them a horrifying lesson. One reason you’ll love Trick ‘r Treat is that all the stories take place on Halloween, and the stories play on people’s expectations of Halloween customs and horror movie plots. It couldn’t be more a more perfect film to watch this season. All the stories are well-crafted, balancing a line of fun entertainment and scary thrills.

The Descent (2005)

The Descent is a British horror film about six adventure-seeking women who go spelunking (cave exploring) in a cave system. Inside the cave, they encounter a long-hidden group of bloodthirsty creatures who start to hunt them down.

The cave setting increases the tension since you know the characters have very few places to hide. Also, the moody soundtrack does a great job of building and holding suspense. This film also explores the characters’ flawed relationships and problems, adding a sense of personal development to this tale of monster horror.

The Mist (2007)

Frank Darabont directed this Stephen King science fiction horror adaptation. It follows a group of people who barricade themselves in a supermarket after a thick fog covers their entire small town. When anyone goes out into the fog, they are swept up or gruesomely attacked by monstrous insect-like creatures.

Although the monsters are huge threat to the characters, the film also explores the extreme tension between people as they struggle to survive the unnatural mist that drives them to the brink (edge) of sanity. The climax of the film is really remarkable.

2010s

The Cabin in the Woods (2011)

The less I say about The Cabin in the Woods, the better. It follows a group of college students who visit a cabin in the woods, and you’ll just have to see the film to find out anything else. This is the kind of horror film where the surprise is the most rewarding part of the movie. I’ll just say this, the more horror movies you’ve seen in your life, the more you’ll appreciate The Cabin in the Woods.

Joss Whedon (Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Angel) wrote the screenplay for the film in just three days. The film has great special effects and make-up.

The Conjuring (2013)

The Conjuring is an expertly crafted supernatural horror film from director James Wan. It follows Ed and Lorraine Warren, a husband and wife team of paranormal (very strange events that can’t be explained by science) investigators, whose real-life reports have inspired many other horror films, like Annabelle and The Amityville Horror. In this film, the couple tries to help a family which recently moved into a severely haunted house in Rhode Island.

The chills (sudden feelings of fear) in The Conjuring are outstanding. The film does an amazing job of getting you to sympathize with the family and investigators’ plight (very bad situation) as they deal with the disturbing events taking place in the house.

The Conjuring is the first film in The Conjuring Universe, which includes direct sequels, the Annabelle series, and the newly released The Nun. Get Out (2017) Get Out is a landmark (very important achievement) of American horror films. The film is the directorial debut (first produced film) of Jordan Peele, a well-known comedian from his retired Comedy Central show, Key and Peele. It tells the story of an African-American man, played by Daniel Kaluuya, who goes to visit the family of his white girlfriend for the first time. While he stays at their home, he uncovers a horrifying secret.

Not only does the film tell an exceptional story of tension and terror, it spaces out the dread with moments of brilliant humor. Looking closely at the film, viewers will see how Jordon Peele addresses racism through the lens of (with the perspective of) a unique horror story while paying homage (respect based on previous work) to classics of the genre.

Some people might read this and think, why should I watch horror movies at all? I don’t like to be scared. Well, there’s not a perfect answer for that question. Your brain produces a mix of chemicals that makes you feel scared when you think something bad is going to happen. It’s the same as when you ride a roller coaster or do something else that takes you outside of your comfort zone.

If you enjoy suspense or the feeling of surprise that keeps you on the edge of your seat, then you can’t go wrong with any movie from this list for a great Halloween thrill. Just about all of them have received critical praise or have gone on to become fan favorites.

Moreover, watching movies can be a great way to improve your English! For one thing, you’ll get to hear English that isn’t coming from a textbook. The English spoken in movies is very natural, which means that it’s what you would hear from native English speakers. Second, when you watch a movie, you’ll develop a sense of the context around the dialogue. This means that you have chances to learn or guess vocabulary based on the situation. Finally, by hearing natural English in movies you can hear and see the way words are expressed. You can pay attention to body language, pronunciation, and reactions to understand what the characters really mean.

Teachers here would recommend you keep your dictionary by your side, turn on the English subtitles, and don’t worry about catching every word. Even rewind and repeat scenes if you’re using English movies to study. Watching movies, scary or not scary, can be a fun way to improve your English.
