Perfume Genius Live Show Preview: 3/29, Thalia Hall, Chicago

In June, Perfume Genius is following up their career best, 2020′s Set My Heart on Fire Immediately, with Ugly Season (Matador), their 6th full-length record. However, this is music Mike Hadreas had been working on before 2020; it’s the musical accompaniment to The Sun Still Burns Here, his and choreographer Kate Wallich’s immersive dance piece commissioned by the Seattle Theatre Group and Mass MoCA back in 2019. In fact, two of the songs on Ugly Season were released independently then, “Pop Song” and “Eye in the Wall”. The former has the inimitable stamp of Perfume Genius’ usual producer Blake Mills, what with its clattering percussion and squeaking and wiry guitars, along with the harmonizing vocals of Hadreas’ longtime partner Alan Wyffels. The latter juxtaposes Mills’ tremolo guitar playing with percussion ranging from ambient techno to propulsive hand drumming and back over almost 9 minutes, perhaps the most explicitly club-ready/IDM track Perfume Genius has ever released.

Not only Ugly Season will come out this summer; visual artist Jacolby Satterwhite will release a short film accompanying the record. And tonight, catch Perfume Genius at Thalia Hall with Hand Habits, the band led by guitarist Meg Duffy, who will also play with Hadreas’ band! You might even hear one or two new songs.
