Grieg - Lyric Pieces, Book I, op.12

Like Mendelssohn’s Songs without Words, Grieg’s Lyric pieces are a series of short melodic piano pieces that he wrote in several sets throughout his career. Here, he can play around with melody and rhythm and technique without having the pressure of fulfilling the requirements of a formal structure. The opening Arietta of this early set was one of Grieg’s personal favorites of his own melodies, and he even quotes it again at the end of the last set of Lyric Pieces (op.71). The subjects of the pieces are mixed, some are absolute genres and dances, others are specifically evoking a character or folk tale, some are 19th century nationalistic pride anthems. Overall this is a lovely set of music that I haven’t heard before and would love to get to know more.

Air On Love

As I am listening to Wet The Day, I mourn the hours trapped in an anxiety rising but never falling in the end. I dry off the beads of sweat that pepper my face and try to remember what it felt like when your fingers brushed against it gently and lovingly, with that look in your eyes. And I try to close my eyes, and I try again and again, persuading apologetically for slumber to wash over me... again, yet again. I love you and I am loving you still, this I hold on to.
