“No third child from you then?”
The question is fair, if unexpected in the moment. Aleth pauses for a few soul beats, caught off guard. Kieran, her little shadow, shifts in his medicated sleep, unconsciously showing his displeasure with the sudden loss of attention. With a slow sigh, Aleth goes back to petting his skull, waiting for that wrinkled brow to relax before she answers.
“No third grandchild for you, ficcanaso.”
Hallas laughs with a silent shake of their shoulders, diamond eyes looking sideways at their mate. Quietly, Dharma swats at them, not taking her eyes off her daughter.
“I’m allowed to be nosy, hush.” Dharma leans forward in her chair, long tail flicking excitedly along the ground. “You seemed so eager to try before, Aleth: you can’t blame me for asking. Momma just wants to know.”
For just a moment, Aleth lamented the fact that she was very much her mothers child. Her poor boys had to put up with so much.
“You have pronipote, mama,” Aleth shook her head, “Shouldn’t that be enough to satisfy you?”
Kieran and Shade hadn’t had the twins quite at the same time, despite one or two scares. She was thankful Kieran was able to have his first. Shade had been able to bubble the souling without any issue, thanks to how easygoing his own souling had been. He had been able to wait a few more days for Kieran to recover before they induced the second twin.
In her humble opinion, they should have let him recover for longer, as his labor had been hard. But, her son had insisted, saying he wanted the soulings to at least emerge from the bubbles around the same time, to really keep them twins. And, well, if Kieran had enough energy to adamantly argue with her in their native language, then he had enough energy to make a bubble.
Predicatively, it had worn Kieran out even more. So for now, she was playing nursemaid to the two new fathers, watching over Kieran to make sure he got rest. Her doting on them kept Shade from overly fretting or feeling guilty for wanting to go do anything other than hover by his mates side. It also meant she could monitor the twins at this critical stage of development, and could help supplement their food when the boys got to drained.
Of course, her playing nursemaid also meant she couldn’t go visit her mother. Hence, the current predicament.
“Of course I am happy!” Dharma says, keeping her voice soft with a glance down at Kieran. “Any souling is cause for celebration, my dear, don’t get me wrong. And, of course, we would love to host a dinner party to celebrate the occasion when they’ve recovered more- ”
“If they would allow it.” Hallas smoothly cuts in. Dharma nods vigorously, waving her hand.
“Yes yes, of course, of course, I do hope they at least consider, getting gifts from the other houses would be beneficial for them in the long run and- never mind, a topic for another time. I am happy, my dear, and I don’t mean to push for more.”
“It’s just... I- we never got to know our grandsons. They never visited outside of dinner parties... or Count business, something Hal and I had no part of. Rancor knew Kieran best, bless his cantankerous soul, but Bromell’s spiteful little feud with you and Krishna just went and made everything ever so complicated.”
“Sorry about him.” Hallas sighs.
Dharma reaches over and pats their hand, twining their fingers together after. She frowns, looking from Hallas, to Aleth’s carefully neutral expression, before finally settling on Kieran with a long sigh.
“What I mean to say is... we would like to know our grandchildren... especially now that things are changing- hopefully- for the better.”
Aleth hums in acknowledgment. The trials had begun not to long ago, first detailing the corruption of the handler system and the ethics of the Pit as Darius had been essentially rewriting everything his father had implemented in the church as well. Through this, he could safely begin to target the Counts as well.
Aleth was certain that Bromell would eventually be executed for his crimes. She had no love for him, but would extend her sympathies to Hallas when the time came. It wasn’t their fault their spawn was an utter fool.
She hoped Tati got to kick his ass before he was sent to his eternal torment.
“The Angel’s have blessed this weeding of corruption within the Countcil.” Hallas says softly. “All will turn out as it should, in the end.”
Aleth nods to them before looking back down at her sleeping son. Curled up half on her, half on the couch, calm and lax, he looked younger than he was. The urge to protect and to hold was hard to fight off in moments like this. She was sure it would never really go away.
“I’m not the one you need to say that to mama. You need to reach out to them.” Aleth smiles. “My boys are stubborn, so it may take some time... but I am confident your legendary persistence will bear fruit, as it always does.”
Dharma barks out a laugh, half falling against Hallas as she wags a finger at her daughter.
“You sly tongued imp you, wherever did you learn such sass?”
Aleth’s smile turns into a sharp baring of her teeth, humor glimmering in her eyelights.
“From the best, of course.”

"what about possession?"
"what about it?"
"can we do it?"
and then, no, not really, because you'd assume that would take hopping into a person's head and grabbing the steering wheel. rough already knew his hands weren't tangible anymore, and he figured that probably extended to the rest of him, too - clothes included. he didn't want to ask about that part aloud, in case the fabric suddenly remembered it was supposed to be abiding by the laws of physics and just sloughed off him.
anyway, he tried hopping into the nearest person, which was a little like going from a hot tub to a swimming pool - shockingly cold, panicky, and a brief stunned stillness that left him standing there as the unwitting victim kept walking. the only indication they'd felt anything was a slight jerk of their head, which rough recognized as a sudden chill that made your body spazz out - at least, that's how he interpreted it. he elected not to ask aleth if that's what all those were.
he tried again on another person, only to be left shivering in their wake.
"the shock to the system on both ends makes it sort of impossible," aleth explained. rough went to grab her hand, but she didn't offer one. right, the intangibility. "usually you're supposed to move on before you've practiced enough to be able to handle it -"
"which you haven't done."
"shut up. but it's also kind of uncouth, i want to say? it's weird to be in charge of someone else, even in theory, so it's just not done."
"because you can't or because you won't?"
"there's no reason to in the first place, so why worry about it?"
"ghost?"
ghost shrugged. "i've tried a few times when i got bored, and they were more suggestible, but that's it. i didn't have total control or anything."
"and they've stopped doing it," aleth added, in a tone that made it clear the stopping wasn't ghost's choice.
"does it always feel that bad?" rough asked.
"describe bad," ghost said, earning a frown from aleth.
"like, i know it's a shock to the system, but the freezing cold part? like jumping into a swimming pool from a hot tub?" yeah, sue me - it's my story to tell, i'm allowed to use the same metaphor twice.
aleth and ghost traded a glance, and rough tried not to explode internally at how they'd apparently developed their own silent language in the time he'd been gone. the time they'd been gone, he supposed, since he was there and they weren't. what was there even to say, anyway, with ghost's expressions hid behind blank, sharpied-on eyes?
"it varies," aleth finally concluded.
"what's it like for you, then?"
"different."
"suffocating," ghost supplied. this afforded them another frown from aleth, coupled with a glare and a slight shake of her head. "but different, mostly."
