Narrativewise, this hairy fuzzball has never explained where or how he was ‘turned’ into a werewolf or why he’s estranged from his brother, so that leaves a bitch to fill in the blanks with her own headcanons (in which he used to be a bookish professor sort who was documenting Kodiak Russian---a dying Alaskan dialect---and the oral history of its remaining speakers, and was attempting to intervene on the acquisition of logging land on Prince of Wales Island on their behalf. When his older brother, the head of a logging crew, crumbles to pressure and attempts to chase out a pack endangered Alexander Archipelago wolves from the area which ends up in the accidental death of one of the animals, a werewolf living among the pack who has forsaken the human world decides to exact her revenge, except Westley gets in the way of that)

I’m so glad I finally discovered which wolf species I am a while ago, I wanted to share a few facts about it! I am an Alexander Archipelago Wolf.

The Alexander Archipelago Wolf, also known as the Islands Wolf, is a genetically distinct coastal subspecies of Grey Wolf found in the southeast Alaskan islands commonly known as the Alexander Archipelago. Their habitat is dense, undeveloped forest with an abundance of wildlife for food sources. Old-growth forest is also critical to providing proper wolf denning sites. Eighty percent of the wolves' habitat is within the boundaries of the Tongass National Forest.

Typically dark grey, black, or brown with short coarse fur, these wolves are known to primarily feed on Sitka black-tailed deer and salmon, but will also eat beaver, mountain goats, moose. They feed opportunistically on harbor seals, mustelids, small mammals, birds, and even marine invertebrates. They are around 2 feet tall, 3.5 feet in length, and usually weigh between 30-50 pounds, which is smaller than most wolves.

An official memorandum issued by the Alaska Department of Fish and Game estimated the population to number only 89 wolves in the fall of 2014, down from 221 the prior year — although the number could be as low as 50. Female wolves were said to have been particularly hard-hit; data in the report show that, as of fall 2014, only 7 to 32 females were left. That being said, Alexander Archipelago wolves are considered to be one of the rarest wolf species in the world.

Within the furry and therian communities, I primarily go by either Xenon (Xeno for short) or my fursona's name, Maximilianus (Maxim/Max for short). Elsewhere I just go by my actual name, Alex. I'm in many fandoms as well, and when I'm not busy with school I try to make content pertaining to my current hyperfixations.

I never really had a set moment in time that I'd consider to be my awakening, as I've felt partially non-human for almost my entire life. Second grade was when my special interest with wolves and werewolves started, and I found the therian community sometime in either 2017 or 2018.

I am melanistic wolfkin (specifics unknown, questioning Alexander Archipelago), werewolfhearted, and doghearted. I am primarily a psychological therian as I believe that the reason for my therianthropy stems from my neurodivergency, though I'm questioning if there is a spiritual element to it as well.

Conservation groups filed a formal notice today of their intent to sue the federal government for failing to act on a petition to protect Alexander Archipelago wolves in Southeast Alaska under the Endangered Species Act. Increased trapping and extensive logging have caused rapid population declines for these rare gray wolves.

“We need the Biden administration to take a stand for these beautiful island wolves before trapping and logging drive them to extinction,” said Camila Cossío, an attorney at the Center for Biological Diversity. “If the Alexander Archipelago wolves are going to survive, they need protection under the Endangered Species Act now.”

Alexander Archipelago wolves are found in the coastal rainforests of southeast Alaska and British Columbia. High levels of killing from legal and illegal trapping, combined with decades of old-growth logging on the Tongass National Forest and continued liquidation of old forests on state lands, are threatening the wolves with extinction.

Protection under the Act would require state and federal agencies to better manage threats to the wolves, including measures that protect their habitat and limit hunting and trapping.

“Threats to the continued existence of these unique wolves have been worsening for many years, in terms both of habitat loss and mismanagement by the state and federal agencies that are responsible for maintaining the populations at a healthy size,” said Larry Edwards of Alaska Rainforest Defenders.

In July 2020 the groups petitioned the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to protect the wolves in Southeast Alaska as a “distinct population segment” because of the concentration of threats and population declines in the region. The Service issued a preliminary finding in July 2021 that the petition “presents substantial scientific or commercial information” indicating that the wolf may warrant listing as a protected species due logging and road construction, trapping and hunting, climate change impacts and inbreeding.

However, officials failed to issue a decision on whether the wolf warrants protection by the 12-month deadline required under the law.
