Donald Trump has now been impeached twice, indicted twice, but remains the frontrunner for the Republican nomination. In a recent interview, he vowed to stay in the race even if he gets convicted for any of the crimes for which he’s been charged. "If [Trump] gets back into power, he'll never leave," says Ruth Ben-Ghiat. "He needs to get back into power because he's so corrupt and shut down all investigations.” And while a handful of Republicans have notably criticized Trump post-indictment, the majority of the GOP have come to his defense and echoed his talking points. “The GOP, as you know, I feel they’re an autocratic party operating in a democracy,” Ben-Ghiat tells Ali Velshi. “They have talking points just like the Kremlin does and we have seen everybody use the same language about the weaponization of government.”

‘A new generation is rising up’: Young Dems stand up to GOP extremism
MSNBC
April 26, 2023
MSNBC's Ali Velshi is joined by Montana Democratic Rep. Zooey Zephyr, the trans lawmaker who has been banned from the state house chamber by Montana House Republicans over "decorum" after she spoke out against anti-trans legislation, along with Tennessee Democratic State Rep. Justin Jones and U.S. Democratic Rep. Maxwell Frost of Florida.

MSNBC host Ali Velshi and Palestinian political analyst Nour Odeh attempted Saturday to shift blame onto Israel on after Hamas mercilessly attacked Israel.
Hamas, a Palestinian terrorist organization, launched a relentless attack on Israel at daybreak Saturday, firing rockets and invading on the ground. Gunmen streamed across the border and reportedly began brutally slaughtering Israelis and allegedly taking people hostage. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared the country was “at war.”
But that didn’t stop MSNBC from blaming the Israelis.
“We have had a lot of statements from Americans, mostly Republicans this morning but some Democrats, it’s a boiler plate. ‘Israel is our greatest ally,’ ‘The only democracy in the Middle East,’ ‘Our strongest ally,’ ‘We must stand with Israel.’ There’s no nuance or recognition of anything that has been going on,” Velshi said. “Let alone, the only thing Americans are worried about these days are these so-called judicial reforms going on in Israel which has led to hundreds of thousands of people protesting on the streets, but lots of Palestinians have said to me, ‘Boy, they wish that those same Israelis who are out there protesting the so-called judicial reforms would be protesting Israel’s inhumane treatment of the Palestinians who live under Israeli occupation. But that’s just not something that’s happening. It’s not something we’re hearing from American politicians this morning. It’s not something we’re hearing from— I think the only comment I’ve heard is from the government of Qatar this morning about this.”

The Biden administration is pausing new projects, for environmental reasons, to increase the export of liquefied natural gas (LNG) overseas.
Natural gas by itself is the least bad fossil fuel. But gas cannot be shipped – so it needs to be liquefied. This process causes it to become more damaging to the climate.
There's also the matter of methane leaks associated with natural gas.
Donald Trump has already stated that on Day One of his dictatorship that he will "drill drill drill". Trump is an existential threat to the planet.

But there are several problems with this twisted line of argument:
Firstly, Hasan may have forgotten that in a democracy, the opinions of government ministers do not reflect upon an entire nation. His claim may actually reflect back upon himself as someone who makes baseless collective racist accusations against the Jewish state.
Secondly, Hasan is simply sawing off the branch he is sitting on: He shows that there is freedom of speech in Israel, as well as the freedom to criticize – even when it comes to ministers whose remarks are scrutinized daily by local media. Why? Because Israel is a democracy.
He finishes his rant by saying:
Our politicians, our elected members of congress here in the U.S., are bent on convincing us that Israel isn’t guilty of apartheid or racism against the Palestinians. And anyone who says otherwise is being antisemitic. So a word of advice for them, the next time they want to take a vote on this issue, perhaps they should listen to Israel’s own ministers first.
So a word of advice to Hasan: The next time you feel like venting your poisonous resentment against the Jewish state, do your homework first.

MSNBC is sidelining their Muslim reporters from covering the Israel war in Gaza
MSNBC has pushed back against a Semafor report that it sidelined Muslim anchors Mehdi Hasan, Ayman Mohyeldin, and Ali Velshi while covering the Israel-Hamas war.
But, according to The New Arab, MSNBC insiders who asked to remain anonymous said that Hasan, Velshi, and Mohyeldin's shows had been suspended, but they were allowed to appear on the channel as analysts.

Velshi: It’s up to us to bring down the temperature (literally)
MSNBC
May 20, 2023
For the first time ever, global temperatures are expected to breach a level that is 1.5-degrees celsius higher than pre-industrial times within the next five years. That’s according to a new report by the World Meteorological Organization. It’s a threshold scientists have been warning about for years. This is a temperature rise we’ve all been warned to avoid at all costs - it is essentially the doomsday threshold for global warming. When you think of climate change or global warming, you might think about those searing hot summer days when the temperature exceeds 100-degrees Fahrenheit. Why would another degree or so make much of a difference? When we’re talking about the earth’s average temperature, even a fraction of a degree can have blistering consequences. It means melting glaciers, rising sea levels and extreme weather events. And when the earth’s average temperature increase surpasses 1.5 degrees the situation will go from bad to much, much worse. And irreversible. It’s up to us - as humans - to bring down the temperature. We created this mess; we can clean it up too.

Far right extremists have particularly targeted LGBTQ+ books for banning. As mentioned in the vid, 26% of all of the literature removed from public school libraries last year featured LGBTQ+ characters or themes.
This edition of Velshi Banned Book Club focuses on the homophobic banning of books and the effect of such banning on LGBTQ+ youth.
Book banning is influenced by officials at the state and local level.
In Florida, Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis and the GOP state legislature are responsible for the state's infamous "Don't Say Gay" law. 🤬
In Illinois, Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker and the Democratic state legislature have actually banned the banning of books. 😎
While there will always be minor exceptions, states run by Republicans are likely to pursue homophobic policies and states run by Democrats are going to be more LGBTQ+ friendly. That definitely includes attitude towards books.
BTW, are you registered to vote? Have you registered at your new address if you've moved since the last time you voted?
