"Darlin'?" his country accent rings out through your dark and empty room,his vampire eyes easily letting him locate you hurried in the covers on your bed where you sniffle quietly.

He watches in the reflection of your mirror as you squeeze your eyes shut, almost af if it would hide you from the world. If he wasn't so worried about you right now he'd chuckle at the sincerity and childishness at it.

"Bad day, Darlin?" he tries again, and you hum back in response - unable to get your voice to work right now.

At that, he's kicking off his shoes and climbing into bed with you, turning your lamp on as he goes so you can see him. Her pulls you close to him and holds you tight.

"want to talk about it?"

You shake your head no.

"want me to use my gift?"

You hesitate, but ultimately shake your head no.

"... want me to leave?"

You shake your head no.

His thumb rubs soothing circles into your side and the sniffles die down eventually. "I'll let you have tonight, but I want you to talk to me tomorrow. Is that okay, sugar?" his accent becomes a bit thicker in the vulnerable moment.

You nod, turning over and hugging him tightly. Face buried in his neck and arms holding him tight, you mumble a small "thank you, Jasper" before you fall asleep in his icy warm embrace.

Which popular kink you hate but you have made peace with it as it comes in every fic?

My initial reaction when I saw this was to reply: foot fetish

I know that probably doesn't make sense, but I was in the Salt Lake City airport last weekend and overheard some women discussing guys with foot fetishes... let's just say I had no idea it was such a common kink. 🤮 However, to be fair, I haven't seen that one very often in Tumblr fics.

After some reflection, here’s my official answer: the kink where a male character likes that his love interest is a helpless, incompetent nitwit.

I hate this trope/kink with the fiery passion of a thousand suns. If you'll tolerate my psycho-analysis of why I feel so strongly about it, continue reading below.

Your question made me think of a fic I read a few months ago where the female lead was shown to be excessively helpless. In the story she was trying to use power tools and tackle a home repair or something. (I can’t remember exactly what she was doing, because I clicked out of the story at warp speed just a few minutes later.) Anyways, the female character has a goal, she’s collected her tools and she’s trying to accomplish this goal… and the male character shows up. Of course, he’s furious to find her using big, scary, dangerous power tools. 

Does she slap him across the face? Throw a hammer at him? Nope! She went along with it and was chastised like a two year old.  

My reaction:

Now, I can understand what the goal of the scene was - the author was trying to present the male character as protective and caring. In reality all he’d done was crippled the person he was supposed to love by not allowing them to grow and learn. The second thing I can understand is that from my perspective, as the reader, this scene probably misses the mark for cultural reasons. 

I grew up in an extremely rural area and at ten years old, I could split firewood, shoot a rifle, and with adult supervision, use a miter saw. (For those of you who didn’t take woodshop in high school, a miter saw is a very large power tool for a kid to handle.) When I moved to the city, I can still remember having to explain to someone what an auxiliary fuel tank was. 

Anyways , returning to the main point. When the male character’s attraction to a woman is based on, or enhanced by, her lack of abilities, it disgusts me. The disgust probably stems from fear. Where I come from, incompetent was the most dangerous thing for a human being to be. Not being prepared gets people (and those unlucky enough to be around them) hurt and/or killed. That lesson must have sunk in for me at a very young age, because seeing incompetence praised in fiction really affects me. It especially bothers me in regards to female characters but I hate it just as much in male characters - they're just less likely to be depicted as helpless.

In regards to having made peace with this kink… yeah, that’s not in the cards. 😅

The helplessness kink rankles my survival instincts too much.
