Sheet It The difference between a good night's sleep and a night spent trying to get relaxed can be as simple as the sheets you use. While some purists insist on ironing your sheets before making a truly beautiful bed, you won't need to if you take them out of the dryer as soon as they're dry and either fold them for storage or place them right on the bed.

Start at one of your mattress's upper corners and pull the elastic of the fitted sheet down and over the mattress corner. Smooth out the sheet and repeat the process on the other upper mattress corner. Finish pulling the fitted sheet into place at the foot of the bed, smoothing out all of the edges and making sure to cover the whole mattress.

It's now time to apply the flat sheet. Spread the sheet out over your mattress, pulling the upper hem to the top edge of your mattress, and centering the sheet so it drapes equally over both sides of the bed (if the sheet has a graphic pattern on one side, face the printed side down). Some creases should be smoothed out.

Switch to the side after tucking the bottom of the flat sheet under your mattress. Grab the sheet corner that's hanging out at the foot of the bed and fold it up against the mattress's edge. To make a neat crease, tuck in the flat sheet, holding the folded corner tightly in place. Rep on the other side. Make an effort to get a neat fold at the mattress corners, but don't sweat it. At the top of the bunk, leave 12 to 18 inches of flat sheet untucked.

It's Blanket Time!

If you're using a blanket for extra warmth, lay it on the bed and change the top hem to be about a pillow's width below the mattress's upper edge. Spread the blanket's sides uniformly over the mattress and tuck the blanket in using the same method as the fitted cover.

Select Your Topper

This piece, whether it's a quilt, bedspread, comforter, or duvet, sets the tone for your bedroom's style. Adjust your bed topper over the blanket (or fitted sheet if you don't want to use a blanket) so that it covers both sides of your mattress equally. Keep the comforter's top a pillow's width below the mattress's top. Fold the fitted sheet's exposed top down over the topper and tuck the sides in snugly.

Set Up Your Pillows

Pillows should be fluffed and propped against the headboard with the open side of the pillowcases facing the bed's nearest side. These are the next step if you're using European shams. It's important to remember that there's no rule requiring you to use shams or throw pillows, but if you want your bed to be truly styled, take the extra few seconds to do so.

It's really easy to change the entire look of your bed with just a blanket if you start with an all-white base for your bedding. There are beds with all-white bedding and a blanket pulled almost to the top of the bed for pattern and colour, such as a traditional wool plaid blanket or even a Mexican serape.

Folding a blanket, quilt, or even a patterned sheet over your headboard is another perfect way to add to the pattern on your bed without committing to it.

Texture is essential.

"Accent pillows and end-of-bed blankets are excellent ways to introduce a comfortable fall texture. Chunky knits, nubby silk, and fluffy faux fur are all good choices. Soft pops of these textures will give the look more dimension."
