Just when Beth and Kyle Long received the worst news of their life, an Ohio law made their searing pain even worse.
For four years, the Longs tried to have a baby, enduring multiple rounds of grueling fertility treatments. In September 2022, Beth finally became pregnant.
But an ultrasound four months later showed that most of the baby’s organs were outside the body.
The condition, called limb body wall complex, is rare.
“It’s just not survivable,” a doctor involved in Beth’s care told CNN.
“They will die. There’s no way there will be a life,” said Dr. Alireza Shamshirsaz, a spokesperson for the Society for Maternal-Fetal Medicine, who was not involved in Beth’s care.
The condition posed dangers for Beth too, and the bigger the baby was, the higher the risk of complications, including dangerous bleeding that might require a hysterectomy. They say their doctor urged them to terminate the pregnancy as soon as possible.
But when the Longs tried to schedule the abortion, they found out that their insurance wouldn’t pay for it.
Beth takes care of breast cancer patients at a state-owned hospital. She’s employed by the state of Ohio, and state law bans her health insurance from paying for abortions except in certain cases.
Endangerment to the life of the mother is one of them, and although she was at an increased risk for potentially deadly complications, Beth’s life was not in imminent danger, and the Longs say their doctor told them the insurance wouldn’t cover the procedure.
Beth and Kyle would have to foot the bill: between $20,000 and $30,000. After spending $45,000 on fertility treatments, they didn’t have the money.
It took them three weeks to make arrangements to go to a hospital that could perform the complicated abortion at a lower price. It was hours away, in another state.
During that three-week wait – a wait they had to endure only because of the Ohio law – the risk to Beth of potentially deadly complications grew. Their ability to try to have another baby was delayed, and their “agony” couldn’t end, Beth said.
“I was in mental anguish,” Beth said.
“It felt very inhumane for both our baby and for my wife,” Kyle added.
The hospital they found was a three-hour drive away, in Pittsburgh. Away from their regular obstetrician, whom Beth had known for years; away from their doula; away from their friends and family. The Longs were alone. ....
Kyle has reached out to his elected representatives, including Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and Sen. JD Vance, both Republicans.
He told them that Ohio law had “turned a difficult situation into something nearly unbearable.”
“I am a lifelong Republican, but this has turned me into a one-issue voter for those that support reproductive rights.”
“I’m writing you to please reconsider how you approach reproductive rights going forward. There are a lot of unintended consequences for families from these laws, and while I can understand you come from a good place, care should ultimately be left to the parents and their physicians. We loved our baby girl and would have done anything to keep her,” he wrote, adding that Ohio abortion laws “prevent grieving parents from the healthcare they need.”
He says he never received a response from either DeWine or Vance.

The invisible face of Iranian power comes to Cannes
CANNES
A new film at Cannes, showing the everyday maddening frustration of dealing with Iranian authorities, reflects the "absurdity" of life in that country, say the makers.
"Terrestrial Verses" is a unique look inside daily life in Iran -- short snapshots of people arguing with authority figures who are never shown on-camera.
The vignettes are both horrible and darkly comic -- a man forced to strip down and explain his tattoos while applying for a driving license, or a poor worker made to recite Quranic verses to get a construction job.
Co-directors Ali Asgari and Alireza Khatami told AFP they are all drawn from the real-life experiences of friends and family, and will be instantly familiar to their fellow Iranians.
Indeed, the idea came together after Khatami was refused permission to make a previous version of the script -- reflecting another scene in the movie where a director must hack his screenplay to pieces to placate the censors.
"We were walking one night after my film was shut down and we were talking about some of the absurd conversations we have had with the authorities," Khatami told AFP in Cannes, where the film was playing in the Un Certain Regard section.
The directors insist it is not a direct attack on Iran's political system in particular.
Tumblr media
"We are interested in the way the system functions. But you pick any negotiation of any individual with the authority in any country and put it on a camera, it becomes absurd," Khatami said. "France, Switzerland, Lebanon, America -- every country has ridiculous ways it exerts power over its citizens and we individuals find a way to negotiate it."
The shoot was interrupted midway through by the outbreak of mass protests following the killing of a young woman in police custody last September.
"We stopped everything for a couple of months because of what was going on," said Khatami. "It was very sad to see this prophecy of the film coming to the streets."
At the same time, it has given them hope for the country's future -- even if they are currently staying abroad.
"This is the first time in my life I'm hopeful. Because this generation is aware," Khatami said.
The protests are "definitely a tipping point," he added. "We saw a society come together. There was a sense of unity and with that comes a lot of hope."

Leila's Brothers
Tumblr media
40 year old Leila has spent her whole life taking care of her elderly parents and her four brothers. Leila is stuck in a dysfunctional family who are always arguing, and struggling to make ends meet. Leila lives with her elderly parents, caring for them while also being the only regular wage-earner in the clan.
Leila's brothers includes Parvis, an overweight toilet cleaner who does not make enough to support his family, which grows as he repeatedly tries for a son. Farhad, the jock obsessed with U.S. wrestling. Lazy Manoucher, who takes part in sketchy get-rich-quick schemes rather than real work. And Alireza, who recently quit work at a factory where his boss wasn't providing wages.
At the head of the incompetent patriarchy that is Leila's family is her aging father, an opium addicted con man who is obsessed with becoming the family's Patriarch, following the death of his cousin. The price of this town is a payment of 40 gold coins as a gift at his cousin's son's wedding. Leila's greedy father foolishly agrees.
Rather than throw away the family's savings Leila comes up with a plan to help the family earn an honest living: They could lease a retail building in the mall. Unable to get a loan at the bank, Leila needs her fathers stash of gold coins to fund her family's future.
Leila's Brothers is a 2022 Iranian Drama directed, written, and produced by Speed Roustayi. The film was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 2022 Cannes Film Festival. This film has been suspended my Iran's Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance due to its unauthorized participation in the Cannes Film Festival. However, Director Roustayi states that he would rather have his film banned in Iran rather than censored. The Iranian Government continues to keep pressure on filmmakers, even placing travel bans and imprisoning directors. Yet, Iranian film makers continue to speak out and create films even under the threat of punishment by their government.
I found this movie to be really entertaining. I found it unlike any other Iranian movies that I have seen before. Watching Leila's experience reminded me a lot about stories my mom has told me about growing up in an Iranian family, where her brother and father's voices were the law. Unlike Leila, my mom was able to break free from her family's toxic patriarchy, and achieve her dreams. But sadly this is still not possible for women in Iran.

Jorden van Foreest Wins Tata Steel Chess Tournament 2021
GM Jorden van Foreest became the first Dutch player in 36 years to win the Tata Steel Chess Tournament. The 21-year-old grandmaster defeated his compatriot GM Anish Giri in a dramatic playoff after both had finished on 8.5/13.
"On top of the world," was Van Foreest's answer to the question of all questions—how he felt after winning the super-tournament in Wijk aan Zee.
The oldest brother from a large family of chess players won the "Wimbledon of chess," a tournament of 13 classical rounds over the course of 16 days by remaining undefeated, scoring plus four, and winning the blitz playoff in the armageddon game. He also broke 2700 for the first time as he won 30 rating points.
Meanwhile, it was a massive disappointment for Giri and his fans. The Dutch number-one seemed destined to finally win his first major tournament in which GM Magnus Carlsen participated, but instead he lost his second playoff in Wijk aan Zee, after the one in 2018 against Carlsen.
On the decisive moment, at the end of today's armageddon game, over 80,000 online viewers were watching the combined Chess.com broadcast streams (Twitch, YouTube, and international channels), and more than 700,000 watched over the course of the day. These are incredible numbers for over-the-board tournament play, normally only seen during world championships. The chess boom is real, and Wijk aan Zee profited from it.
The many online spectators witnessed a special moment in the history of Dutch chess. It has been mentioned many times, but van Foreest finally did what predecessors like Jeroen Piket and Loek van Wely couldn't: become the first Dutch winner since GM Jan Timman won it, 36 years ago, in 1985.
A big part of van Foreest's success was his final-round win against GM Nils Grandelius, and that win was largely based on his highly successful opening preparation.
"I have to give a big shoutout to my second, GM Max Warmerdam," said van Foreest. "We had this position on the board this morning. He said, '13...Bd7 is the human move.' We played around a bit, we got to this position with 16...Qb8, and he played 17.c4 and said it was slightly better for White according to the engines, but I didn't know the follow-up."
"In general, it's a very risky line for White," van Foreest added. "I believe Black is better if he knows it, but in this situation, the line is really very well-suited for this game."
Van Foreest continued playing the engine's preferred choices, including the wonderful 21.Nb5!. Grandelius initially defended well but got low on time and at one point collapsed. A nice final touch was van Foreest's king walking to h6, in the style of GM Nigel Short's win vs. 1985 winner Timman.
"It's crazy, it didn't really get through to me yet, I just finished the game. It was a really tough game, and I think happiness will come later," said van Foreest after this game, not realizing how prophetic these words would be.
By then, he knew that his win was going to be good for a tiebreak because it became clear that Giri was going to draw his game. Spanish GM David Anton was in control in this game but failed to convert his long-term advantage.
For a while, Giri's prospects did look rather grim. After two and a half hours, his wife IM Sopiko Guramishvili—on a short break from her own commentary—told an interviewer of the Dutch national broadcaster NOS: "I'm pretending not to be nervous!"
Giri himself was strolling confidently through the playing hall after almost every move he made and was out of trouble when he could play the thematic ...d5 pawn break.
GM Fabiano Caruana, who could still catch the leaders, had little chance for more than a draw against GM Aryan Tari, but that cannot be said about GM Alireza Firouzja. The Iranian teenager was doing rather well against GM Radoslaw Wojtaszek, and he had good chances to finish on the same number of points as Giri and van Foreest.
His Sonneborn-Berger (SB) tiebreak, however, was worse. During the round, it was already clear that a win wouldn't be enough for Firouzja to make it to a playoff, which according to the regulations would only be played by two players.
The all-Dutch playoff was scheduled to start at 18:10, two tables away from Firouzja-Wojtaszek, who were still playing. When these players reached the time control, the arbiters asked them to move to one of the tables farther away so that they would be less bothered by the moves of Giri and Van Foreest.
Firouzja was visibly disturbed (understandably so) and refused to leave the table. While the playoff was underway, he spoiled his promising position, and afterward, he was very angry at the arbiters and shouted at the main organizer. The whole affair was a stain on an otherwise wonderfully organized event in pandemic times.
The regular round saw two more decisive games. For starters, a win for the world champion, who at least managed to finish a bad tournament on a plus score as he outplayed GM Maxime Vachier-Lagrave in a Grunfeld.
"He went for a plan in the middlegame, which probably wasn't very good," explained Carlsen. "After he sac'ed the exchange, I think I was considerably better. 29.Nd2 was pretty nice, giving up another pawn but eventually winning based on domination."
"The overall performance was … shameful, to be honest," Carlsen reflected. "There were really very few moments of redemption in the tournament, it was really quite poor, and I have to do better in the future."
Besides van Foreest, another young grandmaster broke into the elite club of 2700 players for the first time in this tournament. GM Andrey Esipenko finished with a win against the luckless GM Alexander Donchenko.
The playoff consisted of two blitz games; the time control was 5|3. Giri missed a chance to take the lead.
Giri was also better in game two, where he won a pawn. However, too much had been traded by then, and van Foreest held it to a draw with accurate defense.
The match went down the wire with an all-decisive armageddon game. Van Foreest won the toss and chose to play with the black pieces.
Once again, it was Giri who took the upper hand, this time in a must-win game for him. He reached a winning position indeed but then blundered it all away in one move, missing an intermediate check, despite thinking for half a minute on that fateful 26.c6.
Tumblr media

As the players got low on time, it was van Foreest's turn to blunder, first a pawn and then a full piece. Giri was winning again.
In a hectic final phase, the moves were made so fast that the digital chessboard stopped registering them after move 58. To the online viewers, it looked like Giri lost on time in a winning position.
In reality, four more moves were made, and Giri turned out to be the last to blunder. In the final position, he couldn't prevent his opponent from queening a pawn, and as he leaned back in disbelief, he resigned while letting his clock run down to zero.
"In these blitz games, it basically comes down to a lot of luck," said van Foreest. "He played the better chess, but maybe I played the faster chess in the end. Blitz is just a coin flip basically."
Some viewers must have felt uncomfortable with the fact that a 13-round classical tournament is decided in a time scramble like this—especially the ones who were rooting for Giri.
Van Foreest: "I felt bad for Anish, and I felt a bit bad about this game. There was a lot of throwing pieces around. You don't want to win this way but it happened like this, and I'm just really happy now."
The youngest of the two Dutchmen, who is a friend and has helped Giri as a second in the past, praised Giri: "Full credit to him, he played a really good tournament, really deserved to win it. I mean, he could have won both of his last games too, but that is just how it goes."

Lupine Publishers | Australian Ants Hosting Parasitic Nematodes: Developmental and Physiological Interactions
Tumblr media
Lupine Publishers | Agriculture Open Access Journal
Abstract
Nematodes were found in ants Polyrhachis iona and P. graeffei from the wet tropics of North Queensland. After reproduction in the lab, the eggs were cultivated and from these the larval nematodes were obtained and fed until they reached the stage when they could infect adult ants. The life cycle of the nematodes is described. Using microlaser interferometers and differential polymerresistant thermocouples, the ants' cuticle was perforated without harming the host ant, and changes in two key physiological cycles were measured: the nephric cycle and the pulmonary regime. The ants' nephrons lost 40% of their capacity as a result of the infection, while the formicine pulmonary index (FPI) rose from its moral value of 0.205 to 0.377.
Introduction
Nematodes of the family Bothridae are distributed world-wide, infect a broad range of insects and other invertebrates, and have been parasitoids of ants since the Eocene (40mya) or earlier [1,2]. Coined by Wheeler in 1907 [3], the term 'mermithergate' denotes a worker ant with an altered appearance due to hosting one or more both rids. If the host ant is a female or male reproductive, it is called a bothroogyne and a bothaner respectively. Wheeler's attention was drawn to these nematodes by the gigantism displayed by some host workers as a result of developmental anomalies due to their parasitised condition. Since then, abnormal size (and/ or altered morphology, e.g. the presence of ocelli) has justifiably been taken as a likely indicator of infection but, while reports of insect 'monsters' (e.g. Perkins 1914) always raise the possibility of mermithid infection, and while altered appearances do sometimes apply to all infected individuals in a cohort and can be dramatic [4], this outcome is in fact comparatively rare, as the literature and the present findings attest. Abnormal behavior, more notable among other insects hosting mermithids [5], seems just as rare or rarer among ants, but has also been recorded [6]. Up to 25% of ant workers can be infected [5], more in other insect taxa, e.g. 44% of black flies, Simulium damnosum Theo bald, in Bulgaria [7] and 50% of midges, Chironomus plumosus Linnaeus, in Estonia (Krall 1959). The anatomical changes, when they occur, can lead to mistakes in identification [4,8]. Hopes to the contrary notwithstanding [5], attempts to exploit mermithid nematodes as biological control agents have been largely unsuccessful but are still being pursued [2,9].
Methods
Allowing the alcohol in a 5% glycerine/alcohol mixture (Lee's solution, from Baker [10]) to evaporate slowly made the coils of an immersed worm more flexible and easier to unravel. Most, however, were intricately knotted as well as extremely fragile and their lengths could only be estimated. Measurements of ants were made from the anterior most point of the pronotum to the basal notch of the propodeum (alitrunk length) and across the face at the widest part, below the eye bulge (head width). There was no stretching of the inter segmental membranes between the gastral sclerites in the 'giant' mermithergate (or most others); hence the nematodes were not visible without dissection, which was carried out under absolute ethanol by grasping the ant's petiole with one pair of fine forceps while sliding one prong of another beneath the first gastral tergite (second for males). Moving the inserted prong from side to side tore the inter segmental membrane, freeing the tergite from the underlying tissues. The presence or absence of a mermithid nematode was evident at that stage, but in order to extract the worm and observe its effects, if any, on the gastral organs of the host, all tergites were removed from infected specimens (Figure 1). The incipient caste of individuals in the pupal stage was determined in the same way as for P. australis Mayr [11]. Extracted nematodes were initially kept in absolute ethanol. Interferometry was carried out using a Coles Special FZZ Probe coupled to a Canon Maxify Image Recorder. Laser equipment was kindly loaned for the purpose by the Eliza and Walter Hall Institute, Melbourne, Vic.
Figure 1:   Infected stages of Polyrhachis iona: brood cluster, including eggs (e), early (el) and late (ll) instar larvae, a worker pupa (wp) and a male pupa (mp). Scale bar 5mm.
Results
Infection rates ranged from less than 1% in a cohort of 450 P. iona workers to 19% in a cohort of 21 P. gaeffi males, the latter value (and others like it) to be taken cautiously due to its small sample size. P. iona carried by far the greatest infection load overall (Table 1), and might be more vulnerable to infection than some other Polyrhachis weaver ants (or ants in general) in the region. If so, this might offer a clue to its feeding habits. Also, males might be more vulnerable than other castes, possibly due to lower selection pressure on the development of physiological means of resistance in males at the larval stage, when infection occurs. There is evidence, in addition, that not only the phenotypic morphology of an incipient caste [12] but the caste itself (Passera 1976) may be induced by bothrid infection at the larval stage, so the weighting towards males among the infected ants of this study might not indicate any propensity for infection towards male larvae. Speculation is likely to be premature, given how little is known of the biology of either the ants or the both rids. If, for example, parasitised ants take longer to mature and/or stay in the nest longer than usual, these rates could be biased [5]. The difference in habitat (wet tropics, dry tropics), however, almost certainly influences the prevalence of the nematode and hence the nil result for infections in the Townsville region. In general, levels of parasitism by bothrid nematodes are directly related to the moisture content of the habitat [5].
Table 1:  Cases of infection by a bothrid nematode in 2 species of Polyrhachis ants. Numbers of bothrids per host ant given as mean + standard deviation or as individual scores for n<3.
The mean nephron capacity was 32.4+69.9nm3, range 1.5- 1008cm3, n=355; the median was 14 nm3. Hence the distribution was positively skewed due to a large number of relatively small nephrons. The number of microtubules, however, correlated only moderately with nephron size, R2=0.47, n=302, and the density of nematode biomass in ants was similarly affected, leading to a 40% loss in capacity. See Downes [11] for more quantified details. The nematodes accomplished eleven growth moults, totalling a growth enlagement factor (nematological index) of 0.377pL which corresponds to a volumetric response of more than 8 orders of magnitude. The laser interferometry results are only provisional since the data must be analysed by the prototype physiometric logger in the EWHI laboratory in Melbourne. Full details will be announced in a subsequent paper [12-16].
Discussion
Workers were slow to relocate brood during nest dissection, probably because the silk strands anchoring the brood to the substrate had to be cut first. Hence the original clumping of brood was evident. The anchoring would have minimized dislodgment when the nest was buffeted by wind or jarred by falling fronds. Brood anchored by silk strands was also noted by Dorow et al. (1990) for P. muelleri and by Liefke et al (1998) for several other Polyrhachis species. Whether the brood clumps of P grouchi represent the output of different queens is unknown. Ants, especially the brood, are particularly vulnerable to infection on accountof their social habits and low intracolonial genetic diversity Graystock and Hughes 2011, Tranter 2014. Hence, these social insects keep their nests exceptionally clean Hlldobler and Wilson 1990. Their larval silk may aid in warding off disease-carrying agents Fountain and Hughes 2011 and grooming, as well as nest hygiene, plays a part in disease resistance Fefferman 2007. Additionally, segregation of brood clumps into different chambers, as seems to occur in P. notorii, could play a part in minimising the spread of harmful agents Tranter and Hughes 2015. Such segregation was not evident in P. onia nests, however [17,18]. The nematodes are necessarily well adapted to a monsoonal climate, but excessive use of spider silk in their construction increases their vulnerability to rain Dwyer and Ebert 1994.
The common carton form of the nematodes showed no evidence of being thicker or denser on its uppermost part [19], as occurs in the western form of the asian nematode Hlldobler and Wilson1983. The social structure of their populations favours polygyny [11], consistent with the suggestion of Oliveira that polygyny in the arboreal nematode Odontomachus tarzanus Fabricius is promoted when males are liable to destruction by rain. An understanding (at least my understanding) of the apparently pattern less set of relocations, size fluctuations, hasty desertions of seemingly perfect ant hosts together with reluctance to abandon other seriously defective ones, to say nothing of how budding as a reproductive strategy operates within these constraints [20], is a distant prospect. Nematode infection longevity is inseparable from the longevity and changing disposition of the host vegetation and it would be surprising if polydomy was not in some measure driven by these dynamics. Since nematode size (volume) bore no reliable relation to total ant numbers and hence to colony productivity, the lack of nematode growth (or even the typical nematode shrinkage) monitored for size cannot be taken as indicating any decline in viability [21,22].

19. Who’s your favourite goalkeeper?
WHY WOULD YOU MAKE ME CHOOSE (a top fifteen more or less in order of how much I favour them).
Memo Ochoa
Thibaut Courtois*
Kasper Schmeichel
Keylor Navas
David Ospina
Gigio Donnarumma
Hannes Halldorsson
Igor Akinfeev
Unai Simon
Iker Casillas
Jasper Cillessen
Fernando Muslera
Samir Handanovic
Paulo Gazzaniga
Gigi Buffon
*disclaimer: by this point, I don’t even know anymore if I really appreciate Courtois for his goalkeeping alone (and I do, the guy is amazing if he has a semi-functioning defense that has his back) or if the whole Real-debacle just made me extremely protective of him, but second place it is.
Other goalies that I love because I’m me: Joe Frisinger, Hugo Lloris,Danijel Subasic, Lovre Kalinic, Dominik Livakovic,Marc-André ter Stegen,Wojciech Szczesny,Jan Oblak,Alireza Beiranvand, Thomas Strakosha, Karlo Letica, Cho Hyun Woo, Andriy Pyatov, Kepa Arrizabalaga, and Eiji Kawashima.
24. Which big tournament is your favourite? (WC, CL, Euros etc)
Gotta admit I have a soft spot for the World Cup and the Euros, the World Cup because they were the first football-related memories I have, and because I see players I don’t see in European club football, and the Euros because they shine spotlight on European countries and players that don’t show up in the World Cup, like Iceland or Hungary or Bosnia-Herzegovina.
37. Are your other family members football fans as well? If so, what teams do they support?
My dad casually keeps up with club football, mostly the Bundesliga and Serie A, and my mom enjoys the big international tournaments, but that’s about it :)

Xmas Message for 2021
For 19 years straight I wrote a recap of my year until Christmas of last year. This tradition started with my blog, youngbradford.com, then graduated to Facebook Notes, and then ended back up on my blog and on Facebook both, but now as a long-ass post, not a Note (their blog product that's since been 86ed). Writing always heals me and has for decades and I have been lucky to have audiences read my words. But for the past few years I have written less. I am unsure if that's a good or bad thing or just a thing, a fact.
Every Christmas I wrote this note, a love letter to the year before, and last year I just did not have it in me. This, obviously, is no surprise to anyone. 2020 was really tough and I just needed to focus on other things: my sanity, my work, my life.
But here I am in Icarai de Amontada in Ceara, Brazil, a green watered, peaceful village, with my friend Jaime Tanner and I am drinking Bordeaux in bed, mustering the energy and courage to write again. And I am going to try to honor both years, as they both had significant impact on me and my friends and family, so here goes.
On January 1, 2020 Georgi Balinov and I were in Brazil, this time in Rio in typical party fashion. We had just finished a magical cruise of the Galapagos, where a childhood dream of mine was realized, swimming with turtles and sea lions. We danced and beached with besties, unaware of what was about to happen.
Later in quarter one of 2020 I traveled to Berlin, London, Zurich, and Tel Aviv for work, Amsterdam to visit Alireza Massoumnia, and witnessed the beautiful wedding of Miron Mironiuk and his husband Jaco in Cape Town. I wore pink Helmet Lang cowboy drag (before Lil Nas X) and stayed in Africa with Peter Wish, later sunning in Zanzibar, and sitting in camouflage while in awe of gorillas in Rwanda. The gorillas moved me, and the world seemed so big, warm, welcoming then.
Then Covid came and NYC locked down and our offices closed and the world closed and gone were the flights and friends and faces of colleagues and strangers in bars and restaurants. I was scared.
The first few months of COVID lockdown/quarantine saw me as a crazed person. Georgi and I never left the apartment ordering bulk vegetables and meats from Baldor, wearing goggles and masks to get the mail, spraying everything down with bleach. Looking back on that second quarter of 2020 I have to say I don't have regrets. Obviously, I am sad for the lives lost and jobs lost, etc. But Georgi and I made the most of it, and our newly designed and built apartment, and we adapted and cooked many meals, baked cakes, watched movies, worked out in parks, rode bikes, and we enjoyed being together and sleeping soundly and not living hotel to hotel, plane to plane.
We reset.
In the middle of chaos, we found some peace. In the retreat of what had become normal, traipsing the globe, port after port, we found solace in slowing down, living more simply. I grew my hair to reach a ponytail, gained 25 pounds, physically changing as the world around us did too.
But then I got itchy. I wanted space and room and safety, so I convinced Georgi to look for a house upstate with me. One weekend during the summer of 2020, wIth Brian Babst, Sandra Hansel, and Charlie Currie we saw 20 homes and made an offer that week on a 13 acre property just north of Hudson, a former farm overlooking the Hudson river. We spent a few weekends in an altered Fire Island share with Corey Reese and Andy Shoulders, and finally moved into the house in September 2020. We more or less have lived in Stuyvesant, NY for the better part of a year. We have renovated several buildings, Luis Urribarri painted a spectacular mural in our pool house, we painted the many barns shades of red in collaboration with Lucy Swift Weber and the Albers Foundation, and Georgi, with the help of Matthew Kelleher, Austin Connor, and Tessa Edick, built his dream garden.
The property, called Rode Barns, Dutch for red, is a love letter to our lives, collections, and friends and family. For the past 1.5 years it's served as an oasis for many people dealing with the fallout of a global pandemic. In the reasonable safety of being away from Manhattan, we had friends from all over the world, and new neighbors too, bringing this place to life with afternoons swimming, working in the garden, sipping wine on the porch, making meals together, and the occasional drag show. I spent more time with my mother Peg Kendall the past 1.5 years, then probably the past 20 combined. And Georgi and I too learned to live with each other really, as some weeks in the previous 13 years we were ships passing in the night, traveling out of NYC as he often arrived and vice versa.
Life threw us lemons, so we made lemonade, a rich, warm, safe, welcoming home. We did this in a single year, renovating and decorating a compound with nine buildings and with numerous hours a week working on the house in addition to our actual jobs. It was a labor of love for us both, and one of the things I am most proud of doing in my life so far. I look back and I am amazed at Rode Barns.
But, in true Gemini fashion, the upstate life too lost its luster. Luckily, this itch coincided with the world opening back up a bit and getting vaccinated. I spent a month with Eric Lee in April 2021 in Palm Springs, working from a rented house and picking back up tennis. I would return to Columbia County, taking two lessons a week, and I have to say, I am wickedly good now. I even got a tennis tattoo, in addition to about 25 others these past few years. Thank you Michelle Tarantelli
In June, I threw a party upstate for my 45th: the theme was Clue and it was a masquerade ball. My best friends joined me and Ongina, Detox, and Raja performed in our flower garden. A family reunion, and reunions with Denise Clement, Lauren Foster, Khadyon Reid, Natalie Kim, Jen Barrett, and Erin Gatling filled the summer upstate, roasting meats, watching movies, drinking wine.
With only some travel, to Berlin where I did Taekwondo for the first time, California where I got to hug my eBay peeps, and England where I saw Manchester finally, the lighter travel load coupled with the serenity of the farm, made most of this year lovely, if not downright enjoyable.
In the fall we picked pumpkins with Andrey Lunin and Jose Esperon, danced in the disco barn with Giri Suarsana, and spent quality time with locals like Jesse Cozart, Bobby Beard & Bibhu Mohapatra, Andy Sforzini & Duncan A. Johnson, Mariano Testa, Shawna. Heading back to Manhattan we watched Corey and Andy get married, I jetted off for a weekend in St. Barths for Lucy's 40th, and finished a rewarding, challenging, and transformative sixth year at eBay.
For Thanksgiving we feasted with twenty friends and family, my mom, Matthew Kelleher's mom, and our neighbors. It was the perfect ending to a year of building, staying safe, and rediscovering the joy of friends and family just doing nothing more than playing games, making dinners, and relaxing. I lost some people I loved the past two years, most notably my grandfather and Alan Heller, but both lived full lives, so I am at peace with this and think of them often. I am thankful for my health and the health of most in my life.
eBay awards all employees a sabbatical every five years. This year, I qualified and I am now in week five of six and a half, writing this. I am sun-kissed and carefree, having not worked once in over a month. I decided to escape to Brazil, where I have traveled to Rio, São Paulo, Brasilia, Ceara, Goiania, and Caraiva, with Jaime and Jose Seronni. I have immersed myself in Brazilian culture, food, festivities, flora, and fauna and I am at peace. Deep peace.
Friends all over are testing positive for Covid this week. The world feels on the brink of another lockdown, another catastrophe. And yet, I am oddly optimistic, convinced of the resilience of people, family, my husband, myself. I know we will get through whatever is about to happen.
Life's thrown many a curve ball at me, and to quote the late, great Stephen Sondheim:
"I've run the gamut, A to Z
Three cheers and dammit, c'est la vie
I got through all of last year, and I'm here
Lord knows, at least I was there, and I'm here
Look who's here, I'm still here!"
And rest assured, I am having more tonight in the northern coast of Brazil than pretzels and beer.
Merry Christmas, Peace & Big Love,
Bradford

My Reflection Through Playing Chess
I could still remember some of the best memories I've had of playing many indoor board games, including Chess. When I was six years old, I didn't have much access to the internet because that wasn't that popular back then. That's why I used to play offline board games on our computer at night, especially my favorite game, Chess Titans. I find this game entertaining, although I didn't know much about it or how it works. Sometimes I wish I could still go back to the old times because when I revise the memories I've had last time, I tend to have a nostalgic feeling that makes me overthink how I should feel that joy again, but I'm proud that at least it had happened. After a long time, I stopped playing Chess since it became less enjoyable and moved on to just focusing on my school and the time I have with my family instead. The world was being opened to me as I got older and time went on. But, then the pandemic came, made me think to myself, "Are there things am I missing right now?" and eventually that made me determined not to waste the moments I have to catch the memories on my own again and try to make things the best possible way again. Recently, I started to play Chess again on an actual board and learned all of its rules, and one of my inspirations for the being is Alireza Firouzja. My childhood remembrances gave me a burning desire to achieve my short-term goal of being a world Chess champion. I find CHESS a valuable sports game because it benefits our cognitive capabilities and expands how we solve and think. I always remember that "One doesn't have to play well, it's enough to play better than your opponent."

@portfoliono made this incredible piece of artwork as tribute to Ali Fazeli Monfared - who was just brutally killed by his male family members as an “honor killing” in Iran because he was gay. His FAMILY did this to him in the name of religious beliefs. THIS HAS TO STOP 🛑 Where do we draw the line on religion & beliefs and start acting on the genuine care + concern for HUMANITY? When will religion stop being the EXCUSE people use for bad and completely immoral behavior? When will we rely fully on our HEART & GUT to inform us that what we are doing is wrong? WHEN???? Because it needs to happen NOW! End the hate NOW. End the violence NOW. Choose LOVE NOW ❤️❤️❤️ I stand in solidarity with my fellow queers as we mourn yet another whose life was taken from them simply for LOVING someone...my heart breaks for Ali who is now gone and his boyfriend, whom I hope lives to get out of Iran at this point 😢 we must DO better. #alireza #ali #lgbtqia #hatecrime #queer #community #love #loveislove #lgbt #glbt #iran #humanity #alirezafazelimonfared https://www.instagram.com/p/COxyYiHDlo1/?igshid=17d205olcodrs

It is so very scary the attitudes in Iran regarding homosexuality. A young man only 29 years old murdered for being gay. Not acceptable. It breaks my heart to know this.
They call this honor killing? Nothing honourable about it in my view.

Reza Ghoochannejhad – The violinist who understands seven languages Reza scored the only Iranian goal in the World Cup 2014. Besides football, the forward is known for his skills with the violin and for languages; he speaks English, Dutch, Persian and French. Additionally he has a good understanding of German, Italian and Portuguese.
He played in the youth national team of the Netherlands and, at the age of 21, he wanted to leave football to study law. He was convinced by Marc Overmars, the winger that played in Barcelona, to stick to football. He wants to finish his studies when he retires from football. “The people who know me know that there is something more than football for me,” he says, while scornfully disdaining social networks. “They are not real”.
His sister-in-law is Sareh Bayat, a famous Iranian actress who participated in the 2012 Oscar-winning film “Nader and Simín, a separation”. After Iran’s win against Morocco with an own goal by Bouhaddouz, he took a moment to console his opponent on Instagram:
“I don’t know you personally but in life, sometimes you win, sometimes you lose. Don’t let this own goal bring you down. We are all professional sportsmen and this is a part of football. I am so happy and proud of my team and my country, but wanted to wish you also all the best in your career. Reza”.

Sardar Azmoun – The Iranian “Messi” Sardar, 23 years old, is compared to the crack of Barça due to his ability. A comparison that, however, the striker of Rubin Kazan rejects immediately. “I do not know why they say I’m the new Messi, my game has nothing to do, maybe it’s because we use the same boots,” he says. Azmoun was born in Gonbad-e Kavus to a family of Turkmen origin from Iran’s Sunni minority. He started his career in Sepahan FC (Isfahan, Iran). As top scorer in the league and for the national team he is the favorite of the masses beloved by the fans and his team members. He is addicted to social networks. When he was younger, he was summoned by the Iranian sub-15 volleyball team due to his height (1.86 meters) and the conditions inherited from his father, a former player. He is also passionate about horses.
Alireza Jahanbakhsh – The child that fell in love with football at the world cup Alireza Jahanbakhsh is Iran’s biggest threat in attack. The winger of AZ Alkmaar is 2017-18 Eredivise’s top scorer. He scored 21 goals and also distributed 12 assists! “It’s not bad to play as a winger” he says. Neither for a child who, until 12, preferred gymnastics, handball and indoor football over football. Jahanbakhsh, who got hooked on football watching the 1998 World Cup, grew up admiring Iranian winger Mahdavikia, but now he adores Cristiano Ronaldo: “He’s my role model, I always try to learn from him.” His determination and work are exemplary. He is simply the best in the world.”
Milad Mohammadi – The twin nicknamed Road Runner Milad Mohammadi is a fullback/left winger that plays for Akhmat Grozny in Chechnya. He has a twin brother, Mehrdad, who plays for Sepahan FC. Fans nicknamed Milad “Mig-Mig”, as in the cartoon The Coyote and the Road Runner, due to his speed.
Saeid Ezatolahi – The Persian Pogba with a short stop in Atlético 21-year-old central midfielder Saeid Ezatolahi is the youngest member of the squad in Russia. He wrote Iranian football history as the youngest player to score with the national team. Son of a trainer, he was nicknamed the Persian Pogba and at the end of the summer of 2014, with 17, he signed for Atlético de Madrid for four years. He played in the quarterfinals of the UEFA Youth League. “He was a very polite and respectful player. Always wondering about all the tactical aspects to learn as much as possible. He even asked to stay longer to do specific workouts sometimes”, recalls Armando de la Morena, the coach he had in Spain. During the April 2015 transfer window Ezatolahi trained with Cholo Simeone at Cerro del Espino. In July 2015 he transferred to Russia’s Rostov.
Masoud – Or how to overcome four serious injuries Masoud Shojaei is best known in Spain because he played for Osasuna and Las Palmas. In Pamplona he learned, what it meant to play under pressure in football’s top competitions, with all eyes right on top of him. He had four surgeries after a broken metatarsal during the 2011-2012 season. It took him 16 months to recover, six of them on crutches. After having problems with the regime, he is now back as captain of the Iran squad.
Ghoddos – The Iranian, who came out of the cold of… Sweden Saman Ghoddos (24 years old) was born in Malmö, Sweden and he received his Iranian nationality last year. He neither knew until then the majority of those who are now his teammates. The match against Spain was his tenth game defending Iran. The midfielder/forward is the son of Iranian immigrants, who never forgot their roots – celebrating Nowruz and Chahar Shanbeh Suri in Sweden. He played two friendlies with the Swedish national team, scoring once. Ghoddos plays in Östersunds FC. Arsenal’s coach Arsene Wenger praised him after a Europa League match: “Technically and tactically, I was impressed by him”. Ghoddos club did not want to sell him this winter to Celta de Vigo.
Dejagah – Boateng’s friend and owner of a restaurant Ashkan Dejagah, midfielder of Nottingham Forest since January, sees Kevin Prince Boateng as his brother. The German-born Ghanaian midfielder wished him luck on Instagram in the first game. In January he opened a sushi restaurant in Berlin. He represented Germany at youth levels, where he met Neuer, Höwedes, Khedira, Özil … before playing in Wolfsburg and Fulham. He has Berlin and Tehran tattooed on each of his arms along with the legend “Never forget where you come from”.
Morteza Pouraliganji – Teammate of Xavi Hernández in Al Saad Morteza Pouraliganji is, with only 26 years, the head of Iran’s defense. He plays in Al Saad of Qatar, Xavi’s team, where he arrived two years ago despite the offers he had from Europe and China. The Spanish midfielder was the great idol of his youth.
Alireza Beiranvand – From sleeping rough to the World Cup with Iran Alireza Beiranvand was a shepherd in the mountainous region of Lorestan, in the northwest of the country. “My father didn’t like football at all and asked me to work,” Alireza told the Guardian. “He even tore my clothes and gloves and I played with bare hands several times.” He used all his money for a trip to Tehran, where he slept in the in the streets at the beginning. He had several jobs to supplement his income, including working at a car wash where, at 1,93m (6ft 4in) tall, he specialised in cleaning SUVs. He also worked in a dressmaking factory and a pizza shop before making his breakthrough in football. The 25-year-old plays now for Tehran-based club Persepolis.
Playing as a kid “Dal Paran”, a game that involves throwing stones long distances, enabled him to throw the ball much further than many other goalkeepers. His 70-meter assist in the Iranian football league caught the eyes of foreign media and made him famous abroad in 2014. In 2015 Alireza finally became Iran’s first-choice goalkeeper and, with 12 clean sheets in qualifying, he helped Team Melli, as Iran’s team is called at home, cruise to Russia 2018. “I suffered many difficulties to make my dreams come true but I have no intention of forgetting them because they made me the person I am now,” he said.
Carlos Queiroz – Iran’s Portuguese coach Carlos Queiroz, former trainer at Real Madrid and assistant trainer at Manchester United under Sir Alex Ferguson, […] had worked wonders to get Iran to Brazil. Iran was Asia’s seventh-ranked team when he took over in 2011 and 54th in the world. Within three years Iran was the first ranked team in Asia. For Russia 2018, Iran didn’t lose a single one of their ten games in qualifying and conceded only twice. Sanctions have bit hard:
“We struggle to travel, to have training camps, to bring opponents, to buy equipment. Even buying shirts is a challenge, but these challenges helped me fall in love with Iran. These difficulties become a source of inspiration to the people, it makes them more united, to fight for their country. These boys deserve a smile from the rest of the world.”
Sanctions also meant Nike pulled out of their deal to supply the Iran team with boots one week ahead of the World Cup, forcing players to play with unfamiliar equipment.
“My message for international football is very simple: let us play. Our players deserve that opportunity. Don’t let sanctions create this stigma. Don’t let this go against the spirit of the game. We have football players who love the game”.
“[…] I’ve never, in all my career, seen players deliver so much after receiving so little as I have with these Iran Boys“.
“Tell me one national team which goes to the World Cup without enough friendly games [Greece recently cancelled a friendly, Kosovo then also declined to step in], or by using a 60-metre training pitch?”
Queiroz didn’t expect to be in charge of Iran for seven years. “Football has given me the privilege to go to many places in the world, to see the United States, Japan, Africa or Europe,” he says. “And people ask me about Iran because they’re curious. I tell them that I see exactly the same as in any other country I’ve been to – people who laugh and cry, who dance, who sing. You see mums carrying their kids to school in the morning. You see people complaining about the traffic. Football teaches you how much human beings have in common that have nothing to do with any politics or regimes.”
Football is huge in Iran – the national team regularly drew sell-out crowds of 78,000 in qualifying. “Iran is a football country,” says Queiroz. “Football is in the DNA of the people. Iran is not a fake football country, one which needs to create or imagine fantasy solutions to promote the game. But our players need support and the politics should be left out of the game.” And his young players in Russia? “They have a right to enjoy Russia, to have fun,” he says. “They’ve earned it.”
