Pokemon XD: Gale of Darkness was released 15yrs ago in Japan today. This game had so many intense moments, and Cipher was so much more intense in this one: their attack on the SS Libra (throwing off the two crewman into the ocean, who I don't think were ever reported found and, given the size of the vessel and all the Pokemon as cargo, probably weren't the only people aboard), replacing an entire town, creating a supposedly unpurifiable Shadow Mon (how badly did they torture/experiment on Lugia?), to Ardos trying to have everyone on Citadark (but mostly the player) killed.
Also, James Turner, the man who designed Shadow Lugia, did this piece to commemorate the game's anniversary:

I'm gonna need a bigger shelf!
Over time, I’ve been slowly building up a collection of Titanic books. A few of them I’ve had for a long time. Once in a while, something about other ships or other subjects altogether would creep in, mainly science. Recently, I acquired a bunch of new books, expanding my “library” to 40 books and adding some new subjects as well as ships to the mix. Here’s my library so far:
From left to right, top to bottom shelf:
Inside the Titanic - Hugh Brewster & Ken Marschall A big, great book featuring cutaway paintings of Titanic, showing what was inside.
Titanic: The Ship Magnificent: Volume 1 - Bruce Beveridge A thick volume covering the construction and engineering of Titanic, such as engines, funnels, ventilation and heating, generators, boilers, the shipyard, hull and steelwork, and so on.
Titanic: The Ship Magnificent: Volume 2 - Bruce Beveridge A volume covering the fitting out stage of construction and Titanic’s interior design, going over many of the rooms and design elements. Both volumes are filled with hundreds of photos and plans.
Titanic: Triumph and Tragedy - Jack Eaton & Charles Haas (signed by Jack and Charles) A sizeable book detailing the life of the Titanic from construction to sinking and many of the details surrounding it.
Titanic: An Illustrated History - Don Lynch & Ken Marschall A nice coffee table book with lots of paintings illustrating Titanic’s voyage and sinking.
Exploring the Deep: The Titanic Expeditions - James Cameron A book detailing Cameron’s many dives to the wreck of Titanic, featuring tons of photos, renderings, accounts, and some extra goodies.
Ken Marschall's Art of the Titanic - Rick Archbold & Ken Marschall Another book featuring many of Ken’s Titanic paintings and his history and process for painting them. It also includes some of his other liner paintings.
Titanic in Photographs - Dan Klistorner & Steve Hall A good coffee table book of large reprints of many famous Titanic photos, detailing her journey from shipyard to sailing.
Report Into the Loss of the SS Titanic: A Centennial Reappraisal - Samuel Halpern A more technical volume going over the conclusions of the inquiries into Titanic’s sinking and many of the details and accounts.
On a Sea of Glass: The Life and Loss of the RMS Titanic - Tad Fitch, J. Kent Layton, & Bill Wormstedt (signed by Tad) A detailed and compelling read about Titanic’s life from her sea trials to her final plunge, with a number of interesting appendices, information, accounts, and photos.
RMS Titanic: A Modelmaker's Manual - Peter Davies-Garner A wonderful book to have for the Titanic modeler, if you can find it. IT’s chock full of detailed drawings and plans of many elements of the Titanic, including hull line plans and a profile view, as well as its text and photos documenting the construction of a huge scale model of the Titanic.
RMS Titanic: Owner's Workshop Manual - David Hutchings & Richard de Kerbrech A fun little book in the style of those car manuals you often see, with plans and diagrams and photos covering many aspects of Titanic.
Eyewitness: Titanic - Simon Adams A very simple and short book for the child or young person just getting into the Titanic. A favorite from when I was little, but not much to it.
882 1/2 Amazing Answers to your Questions about the Titanic - Hugh Brewster & Laurie Coulter A fun read for interesting little tidbits and facts about Titanic and pop culture surrounding it.
Draw the Titanic - Andrew Staiano & Jason Pederson A guide for drawing Titanic and related subjects.
Titanic: Triumph to Tragedy A magazine-type publication full of general information and a number of errors, but probably a decent read if you’re short on time and want to know a bit more about Titanic.
National Geographic: April 2012 An issue of National Geographic with an article for the Titanic centennial, featuring some wreck photos and a sinking simulation poster and some words from Cameron about his explorations.
Ocean Liners of the Past: Olympic & Titanic A book from the 70s featuring reprints of material from earlier period pieces about the Olympic Class Liners. It includes a bunch of great, high-quality drawings and plans of things like the engine and boiler rooms and other engineering elements, and lots of great information about the engineering of those ships.
On Board the Titanic - Shelley Tanaka & Ken Marschall A short little paperback for any child who wants to learn the basics of Titanic’s story, with some paintings by Ken.
Story of the Wreck of the Titanic This is my oldest book, an original printed in 1912, acquired for only $15. It’s full of first-hand, unfiltered accounts from the survivors and news of the time about the Titanic disaster and aftermath.
A Night to Remember - Walter Lord Written in the 50s, this exciting and compelling novel utilized what at the time was the best information available about Titanic’s sinking. Lord manages to use pure facts and accounts - nothing fictionalized and no fake characters - with a gripping writing style to tell Titanic’s story from the collision to the Carpathia. It’s still considered one of the best books about Titanic, and the move made from it one of the best films about Titanic.
RMS Olympic - Brian Hawley A small book telling the story of Titanic’s sister ship, Olympic, with tons of rare photos.
M.C. Escher: The Graphic Work A giant book of prints of Escher’s best work. I won it at an art show in high school.
Beau Voyage: Life Aboard the Last Great Ships - John Malcolm Brinnin A big book full of many photos of ships from the early to mid 20th century, the age of the last classic ocean liners.
Queen Mary - James Steele A wonderful and large book all about the Queen Mary in her heyday and beyond, full of period photos of how she looked pre and post Long Beach, and a set of deck plans.
Lost Liners - Robert Ballard & Ken Marschall A coffee table book about the sinkings and wrecks of several famous ocean liners, including the Titanic. Ken’s amazing artwork is again displayed, including detailed paintings of Titanic’s wreck.
The Story of the Unsinkable Titanic - Michael Wilkinson & Robert Hamilton A very general book about Titanic’s story with the usual photos and material, but still good for the person just getting into the subject.
Robert Ballard's Lusitania - Robert Ballard An amazing, must-have book for anybody interested in the Lusitania, the other great ocean liner disaster. The book tells the story of Lusitasnia’s final voyages and sinking, and details Ballard’s explorations of the wreck. It includes inromation and tons of photos of the ship’s interiors as well as the wreck, and Ken Marschall’s incredible paintings depicting the sailing, sinking, and wreck of Lusitania.
Hindenburg: An Illustrated History - Rick Archbold & Ken Marschall Another must-have, this book tells the story of the German (Nazi) airship Hindenburg, starting with the airships that came before her, the final voyage, and her fiery end. It includes more amazing paintings by Ken, with some of them being cutaway views showing the inner workings and layout of the Hindenburg.
Comet - Carl Sagan & Ann Druyan A detailed tome about the science and nature of comets.
Cosmos - Carl Sagan Like the related TV series, Cosmos delves into the history and nature of the universe, from galaxies and planets to relativity and Mars, and the human journey to discover more about the universe we find ourselves in, and our deep questions about it.
Anatomy of the Ship Hood - John Roberts A technical book about the British battlecruiser Hood, it features many, many super-detailed drawings, plans, and disagrams of the structure and workings of the Hood, including deck plans, hull plans, line plans, detailed structural views, and views and plans of many elements of the ship’s structure. If you plan on modeling the HMS Hood, this book is a must-have.
The Battleship Yamato - Janusz Skulski This one is of the exact same nature as the Hood book, only with the Imperial Japanese battleship Yamato. Al lthe ultra-detailed plans you’ll ever need to know the structure of Japan’s most imposing battleship and technological WWII marvel.
Unstoppable: Harnessing Science to Change the World - Bill Nye (signed by Bill) Bill Nye’s ideas and plans for how we can use science and engineering to help and solve many of the world’s problems, including climate change. I picked up my signed copy at an event in Philadelphia where I got to see him speak.
The Origin of Species - Charles Darwin The classic book laying out Darwin’s theory of evolution. Evolutionary theory has come a long, long way since this book was written, but it’s still a must-own for anybody interested in science or evolution.
The Demon-Haunted World: Science as a Candle in the Dark - Carl Sagan A wonderful and eye-opening book about science and skepticism, and how we can use those tools to cut through the nonsense and horrors and burning questions and fears of the world to improve the world and our own lives. Sagan discusses many things from a skeptical, scientific perspective, including UFOs, magic, religion, astrology and other new-age ideas and more.
The Klingon Dictionary - Marc Okrand Pretty self-explanatory. Want to know what a word is in Klingon: This book should help. Or Google, but a book is good, too.
The Martian - Andy Weir If you thought the movie was good, the book is better. Weird brings his intense attention to detail and science to tell a compelling and plausible story about an astronaut trapped on Mars. It’s full of science and humor, so what could be better?
Raise the Titanic - Clive Cussler A fun, action-packed thriller from the master of adventure novels, Cussler tells the story of a mission to raise the wreck of Titanic in a Cold War arms race that culminates in a showdown on the rotted decks of Titanic. Written before the wreck was found, it takes some liberties, but it’s a thoroughly fun read.
Contact - Carl Sagan A novel about an alien signal received by humanity with instructions to build a machine to send a group of humans to another part of space, and all the hardships and drama that come with such an event. It was, of course, made into a movie starring Jodie Foster and Matthew McConaughey.
That’s my library so far. I hope to expand on it in the future. You can never have enough Titanic books, or any books for that matter.

Tragedy of Jupiter Station - Prologue
QUARANTINE ON JUPITER
17/01/2203
At 0700 hours GMT this morning all shuttle travel to and from Jupiter came to a screeching halt as a planet wide quarantine was announced. Hundreds of people have been left stranded.
Official spokespersons for the base say that there is no cause for alarm and that the planetary quarantine is nothing more than a precaution at this stage.
Our sources have revealed that in the small hours of the morning Europa Hospital shut its doors and went into a total lock-down following an emergency medical situation that required Chief of Surgery, Doctor Abigail Kelly, to make an early appearance at the hospital.
Our sources cannot reveal just what the situation was that caused Dr Kelly to close the hospital but rumours suggest that they may be dealing with the beginnings of a pandemic.
Colonel Robinson, whose office ordered this morning’s quarantine, has not been available for comment.
B. Aldrin
 JUPITER, WHAT’S GOING ON?
19/01/2203
Two days into the shock quarantine of Jupiter Station and there is still no word on when the quarantine might be lifted, allowing travelers to go home.
All communication from the planet, outside of official channels, has been stopped leaving us here on earth and our friends among the stars in the dark and cut off from family and friends.
Just before the communication blackout, our sources on the planet were able to share with us that the source of the quarantine is a particularly virulent alien virus that is currently working its way through Europa Hospital, unchecked.
Colonel Robinson remains unavailable for comment.
B. Aldrin
DEMETER, JUPITER’S SALVATION?
23/01/2203
One week on from the quarantine of Jupiter we today saw hope for the first time. Earth’s O-class flagship, the SS Demeter arrived in orbit around Jupiter late last night. Reports indicate that a shuttle left the Demeter for the planet’s surface shortly before dawn.
Sources aboard the Demeter confirm that the shuttle was carrying vital medical supplies and scientific equipment. They could not confirm whether the rumours of the ship’s Xenobiologist, Doctor Manu Tapiata, also embarking for Jupiter Station, were any more than just rumour.
Doctor Tapiata once served aboard the SS Prometheus with Dr Kelly and Base Commander, Colonel Olivia Robinson.
We can only hope that with the help of Dr Tapiata, the alien virus will be stopped and life can return to normal on Jupiter.

COLONEL ROBINSON SPEAKS OUT AT LAST
25/01/2203
Today for the first time since making the drastic decision to plunge all of Jupiter into quarantine Colonel Olivia Robinson was available to speak to us.
“Today we are able to confirm that we have been dealing with the outbreak of an unknown pathogen designated JF391-Σ. It is currently contained within Europa Hospital and the planetary quarantine is merely a precaution. We have yet to uncover Patient Zero, the pathogen’s origin or the method of transmission. Our best scientists are at work on finding a cure and a vaccine, both here on the planet and remotely from the SS Demeter. We ask for patience while they work and hope that we will have more news for the families soon.”
Colonel Robinson herself has been personally affected by this disaster. Her wife is none other than Doctor Abigail Kelly, Chief of Surgery at Europa Hospital. Both women semi-retired to Jupiter after serving under the Major’s brother, Captain James Robinson, aboard the SS Prometheus. Captain Robinson tragically died after a long, silent, battle with illness mere minutes after the Prometheus was decommissioned in 2198.
Our thoughts remain with all those trapped on Jupiter.
B. Aldrin
 JUPITER PAYS THE FERRYMAN.
27/01/2203
From Jupiter today no news on a cure, instead a list of the dead, expected to grow in the next few hours.
·        Dr Adrian Harris
·        Corporal Morgan Whitmore
·        Erick Mackenzie
·        Ensign Quentin McKenzie
·        Jackson O’Donnell
·        Janet Hammond
·        Henry Esposito
·        Kathryn Rankin
Following this somber news The Global Oversight Taskforce, reached out urging people not to worry and reminding them that the greatest minds in the galaxy were working on a solution.
All we here on Earth can do now is wait.
Wait and hope for a miracle.

The Poseidon Adventure is an American adventure novel by Paul Gallico, published in 1969. It concerns the capsizing of a luxurious ocean liner, the S.S. Poseidon, due to an undersea earthquake that causes a 99-foot wave, and the desperate struggles of a handful of survivors to reach the bottom of the liner's hull before the ship sinks.
Plot
Formerly the RMS Atlantis, the SS Poseidon is a luxury ocean liner from the golden age of travel, converted to a single-class, combination cargo-cruise liner. The ship is on her first North Atlantic crossing under new ownership, celebrated with a month long Christmas voyage from Lisbon to African and South American ports.[1] On December 26, the Poseidon is overturned when it has the misfortune of being directly above the location of an undersea earthquake. The ship capsizes as it falls into the sudden void caused by the quake displacing millions of gallons of seawater.
Starting from the upper deck dining room, preacher Reverend Frank "Buzz" Scott leads a small group of (often unwilling) followers towards the keel of the ship, trying to avoid the rising water level and other such hazards. Those stuck within the dining saloon are unwilling to follow the Reverend, and stay behind.
Those survivors choosing to follow Scott climb a Christmas tree to ascend into the galley area where they meet some stewards and kitchen crew. There is a great debate about whether to try to reach one of the propeller shafts at the stern, or to go forward to the bow. One of the stewards fears the lockers that hold the anchor chains will have flooded, and suggests that they try for the engine room.
After climbing two upside-down stairways, the group comes upon "Broadway", a wide service corridor that runs the length of the ship and connects to the engine room. The posse breaks for a while whilst they look for supplies. Young Robin Shelby ventures off to find the bathroom while Tony "The Beamer" Bates and his girlfriend Pamela find the liquor closet. When the ship's emergency lighting suddenly goes out, a number of crew members panic and stampede; they are trampled, or killed by falling over stairway openings or into a large pit where a boiler tore through several decks of the upturned ship. After the panic, Scott's group goes in search of The Beamer, Pamela, and Robin, who are missing.
New York Police Detective Mike Rogo finds The Beamer passed out, intoxicated, and Pamela refuses to leave him. Robin is nowhere to be found. While searching for her young brother, Susan is raped by a young, terrified crew member named Herbert. Susan talks with Herbert, who is remorseful and ashamed, and grows to like him. But Herbert, realizing the consequences of his actions, panics and runs off and commits suicide. Susan rejoins the group and tells them nothing of what has happened.
After an intense search, they make the painful decision to move on without Robin. At this point his mother, Jane Shelby, breaks down and vents her long-held disgust and hatred for her husband. The Reverend, having found a Turkish oiler, guides the other survivors through Broadway to the stern. They find the corridor to the engine room, which is completely submerged. Belle Rosen, a former W.S.A. champion, swims through the corridor and finds the passage to get them to the other side. Upon their arrival, they find the engine room, or "Hell" as Mr. Martin calls it.
They take time to rest and save the batteries on their recently acquired flashlights. In the darkness Linda Rogo makes a move on the Reverend. After their rest they see the way out—five decks up, on top of a fractured steel wall they name "Mount Poseidon". During the difficult climb, Linda Rogo rebels and attempts to find her own way. She chooses an unstable route and falls to her death, impaled on a piece of sharp steel. An explosion rocks the ship, and Reverend Scott, in an insane rage, denounces God, offers himself as a sacrifice, and commits suicide. Mary Kinsale, an English spinster, screams in grief and claims that they were to be married. Her fellow survivors aren't quite sure what to make of this revelation.
Mr. Martin takes charge of the group and they make their way into a propeller shaft where the steel hull is at its thinnest. The oxygen supply begins to give out, but after much waiting, they are finally found. Belle Rosen has a heart attack and dies before the rescue team can reach her. The rescue team cuts through and the group climb out of the upturned hull. Manny Rosen, however, refuses to leave without Belle's remains, which are lifted out after the others have left. Once outside, the survivors see another, much larger group of survivors being removed from the bow of the ship. Most are still in their dinner clothes, in contrast to Scott's group, who are mostly in underclothing and streaked with oil.
En route to the rescue ships in lifeboats, they see The Beamer and Pamela, who have survived after all. Sailors from a small German ship try to put a salvage line on the Poseidon. Mike Rogo curses them because of his World War II experiences, and laughs when their efforts fail. The group goes their separate ways—Mary Kinsale and Nonnie on a ship back to England; Mike Rogo, Manny Rosen, Hubie Muller back to New York, Martin back to Chicago, Dick, Jane and Susan Shelby back to Michigan; and the Turk back to Turkey. Aboard the American ship, they watch as the Poseidon sinks. Jane Shelby, finally giving up hope, silently grieves the loss of her son.
The novel ends with Susan dreaming of going to Hull in England to visit the parents of Herbert. She hopes that she might be pregnant with his child so he would have a legacy.

Exhibition Review
Linda McCartney majored art history at the University of Arizona and attended only 2 photography lessons at night school. These classes introduced her to photographers such as Walker Evans and Dorothea Lange, who she drew influence from, along with Edward Steichen, when she was later introduced to his work. McCartney was particularly interested in the history of photography and payed homage to William Henry Fox with her handcrafted cyanotype prints, though she experimented with many printing processes along with a great deal of polaroids.  While working as an editorial receptionist for Town and Country Magazine, McCartney took advantage of an unused invitation to a Rolling Stones promotional party aboard the SS Sea Panther on the Hudson River. There she documented the event, taking candid pictures of the band which the magazine then published, kicking off her photographic career in the 1960s and by 1968 she was the first female photographer to have a cover photo on Rolling Stone magazine. Many of the photographs at the Linda McCartney Retrospective exhibition feature her family; husband and musician Paul McCartney an their children, Heather, Mary, Stella and James. Her documentary style photography captures her subjects often candidly in natural situations and the influence of the likes of Dorothea Lange is evident here.
Tumblr media
My Love, Linda McCartney, London1978 – Colour C-type Print
This classically 70s image has a large depth of field as the cars in the background and the reflection in the mirror are all in focus, suggesting that McCartney used a small aperture and no lighting equipment, for obvious reasons. The contrast in this image is what interests me – between far and near, cold and warm tones, detachment and intimacy. The focal point of Paul’s eye connects the viewer and the image and leaves me wondering what he was looking at - his wife, Linda, the camera or was he simply glancing in the rear-view mirror for other cars? The composition is interesting as you are drawn to the reflection of eyes even though they take up a small part of the frame which contrasts greatly with Mapplethorpe’s image in which his eyes dominate the frame. Paul McCartney, spoke about it in and interview with The Guardian, “I’m driving, and I think Linda is taking the picture with one of our babies on her lap – if you look, there’s a very faint reflection in the windscreen. Talk about multi-tasking.” This seemed to be her style; taking photos as and when the moment arose, rarely planning or composing them in advance, which gives a fairly real and unedited - though picture-perfect - view of her life, through a possibly “rose tinted” lens.
Robert Mapplethorpe studied drawing, painting and sculpture at the Pratt Institute, influenced by artists such as Joseph Cornell and Marcel Duchamp. His photographic journey began in1970 when he was given a polaroid camera by artist and filmmaker Sandy and incorporated early images into his collages as he felt it was “more honest”[2]. Honesty is an interesting concept in Mapplethorpe’s work as in his early self-portrait’s, he dons characters and personas, exploring different aspects of his personality and it isn’t until his later work that we see Mapplethorpe portray his true and vulnerable self in his images. His documentation of New York’s S&M scene in the late 70s astounded the photography world and beyond, both due to the usually taboo and hidden subject matter and his advanced technical aptitude.
His work exhibited in the National Portrait Gallery traversed his more provocative, controversial images, his self portraits in which he plays a role and the later images where he captures himself authentically and emotionally after his AIDS diagnosis.
Tumblr media
Self Portrait, Robert Mapplethorpe,1988 – Gelatin silver print on paper, 27.10 x 57.50cm.
This powerful and deeply personal self-portrait was taken 2 years after Mapplethorpe was diagnosed with AIDS and he died only a few months after this. Though incredibly cliché, the phrase “the eyes are the window to the soul” springs to mind and seems to ring true with this image – we see Mapplethorpe’s emotion, his fear, his apprehension, his anger and his courage as he stares down death itself, painfully aware of his own mortality. It feels particularly intimate as his eyes take up the whole frame, unlike McCartney’s image where the eye is detached from the rest of the composition, which feels more like a mere glimpse in comparison to this intense eye contact, which Mapplethorpe has insured is unavoidable. This image seems to have been shot in a studio with artificial or strong and strategically manipulated natural light, as seen reflected in his eyes, which casts a diagonal shadow across his face. However, he is not squinting so we could assume that the flash wasn’t overly bright, was likely out of his eyeline and that a fast shutterspeed was used to avoid capturing any movement or blinking. It could be inferred that the eyes being cut by shadow with half in light and half in dark are symbolic of his state or mortality, representing life and death but regardless, they do represent his vision as a photographer, in both a literal and artistic sense. In 1988, he established the Robert Mapplethorpe Foundation, providing grants to support photography on a global scale and later to help fund medical research for HIV/AIDS – his life and legacy inspiring and positively influencing people to this day.

sleeper ship AOS McCoy au
This is long. Kelvin version of sleeper ship McCoy au.
The year is 2230. SS Kelvin is returning to Earth from a failed colony and it is going to be rerouted on Mars that needs a new colony. A sudden anomaly appears letting out a gigantic ship. The Narada comes through and attacks the Kelvin immediately. Eighty thousand pod’s are ejected. George Samuel Kirk a synthetic android and Winona is a human who goes into labor early due to the stasis pod ejecting and a malfunction occurring. A synthetic medical officer’s escape pod clutches it and boards it. George and Winona share one last conversation. The conversation is cut short with the naming of James T. Kirk. Our scene pans over with a doctor’s three year old watching the news after the survivors are taken to Mars. The tale of a pointy eared alien with eyebrows causing this tragedy. Winona goes to Riverside, Iowa. This is when humans are then aware they are not alone. Klingons take the Narada and it’s crew captive.
The media jumps at the chance to profit over the Romulan attack by rebooting Galaxy Quest. Galaxy Quest takes a sharp turn from a hopeful, bright well recognizable show with a non-military group into a gritty, dark tv show regarding space travel and abiding the prime directive and the Meechan’s are replaced by a new antagonist. This alienates potential viewers and star fleet officers, but the original and previous versions of Galaxy Quest are preferred over the new reboot including spin offs, movies, books and so on. McCoy is in Georgia for most of his life until Jocelyn and Joanna. Then David dies and along comes a divorce. He goes to Riverside, gets drunk, and is recruited by Captain Pike to join star fleet. McCoy meets Jim. They are assigned room mates. Three years later, there is a kobyashi maru and Jim passes it. Jim and McCoy are in a relationship. This passing enrages Star Fleet and he has a panel. McCoy is annoyed and knows Jim is going to be tossed out of Star Fleet. Jim gives a reasonable answer on why he did what he did. Unbeknowst to them and Nero, rements of the original timeline have arrived close by Earth and coming for a crash landing.  As a result Nero never launches the attack on Vulcan and keeps waiting.  Jim passes the panel. McCoy gives Jim the gibb slap. Winona is visited by a man who resembles George along with two men. Winona does not call the authorities on them as a result and embraces her son despite how different he is from her  little boy. The man introduces her to his husband. They both don’t know if their other husband is still alive as he had dejected the shuttle craft in order to preserve their lives because the main hull is larger than the other half. They both have felt the bond severed. They help around the house and actively encourage her to return into space as a engineer. Christmas rolls around and Winona introduces her son and his boyfriend to their other selves ad announces she is returning to space but on Starbase 1. Kirk Prime and Jim share the same feeling of ‘THAT’S STILL NOT IN OPEN SPACE,MOM!’ The McCoy’s get along with each other sharing notes to each other about their respective Jim. McCoy Prime and Winona embarrass Kirk Prime by showing Jim’s baby pictures to McCoy with hazel eyes. The Kirk’s sulk away to the porch and talk about their father, the stars, and responsibility. McCoy Prime learns more of this Jim’s allergies. McCoy Prime writes a number of planet civilizations and descriptions that he may need a hypo for and what to be prepared for. McCoy Prime lures his other self to a clinic and vaccinates him for xenopolycythemia. McCoy Prime and Kirk Prime both warn the two that the world is going to be darker and different including trusting aliens, separately, at the same time. McCoy Prime and Kirk Prime wistfully watch the three leave and so McCoy decides to make a sehlat. No one knows what he created but he apparently created ten others for familys around town for protection. Star  Fleet gets involved and they get crushed by Kirk Prime talking their way out of the scenario. And promise them that they are sterile.
Apparently, they are not sterile.
Cue clans of Sehlat adapting to Earh.
Two years later, the larger part of the craft crash lands on Delta Vega Kirk Prime and McCoy Prime have spoiled their sehlat, ashaya, rotten. And he loves them dearly. He’s like a overgrown german sheperd with a heart of gold. Jim and McCoy are assigned to the SS republic with forty-three thousand in stasis colonists. Jim and McCoy are married and they were given away by their counterparts while Winona went deeper into space and her starship went missing. USS Mayflower with four hundred fifty people aboard going to a medical conference. However, the SS Enterprise is completed sooner than expected and they are transferred to the SS Enterprise as back up officers. Jim is a red shirt. McCoy is a medical officer. The SS Enterprise is manned by two hundred thirty synthetic star fleet officers including Montgomery Scott. The Narada attacks one month into their voyage. Captain Pike registers what this means. They quickly get rid of the Narada via tricking it into the sun and it is destroyed instantly. Star Fleet is notified of the threat being eliminated and there’s a huge celebration. Captain Pike is paralyzed for the time being. Number One relieves herself of command. The starship is put into autopilot since everything is in limbo because Mr Scott, Scotty, refuses to take command. Scotty takes another option. Instead ,he sends all the synthetics into hibernation mode until the end.
A anomaly awakes Leonard McCoy one week later. McCoy sees messages their counterparts had been sending. McCoy is comforted that despite his husband being a red shirt, they are going to be living long enough to be old and wrinkly. McCoy lives in the starship for a year and refuses to awake the others because this is a damn 100 year mission that should be captained by robots for 95 years then replaced by the human crew toward the end. And it is going to lack one extra medical professional. And his pod is broken. The halls are lined in pods. McCoy takes the time to wipe the fog off Jim’s pod to see his face and some days he breaks down and cries  hitting the pod at how unfair it is. Because when Jim awakes, McCoy might as well be dead. Or being near the verge of death. He sends messages back to his counterpart and it takes a week for the messages to return as they get further and further. McCoy Prime’s last reply as they are out of star fleets known boundary between deep space and federation is: It’s going to be okay. Don’t lose him this time like we did. Live long and prosper. And McCoy is left confused on who he exactly means. Joanna has got lots of voice mails from her father but not visual mails because who wants to see their father grow themselves a beard out? He refuses to let her see how being isolated has made him. He feels he is hallucinating and he probably is seeing people walk down the hall. He catches himself talking to a hallucination and chiding them out near the end of the year. He looks ridiclious talking to thin air on the security cameras.
The next year. On the first day of the year, a group of Vulcans arrive. McCoy cracks and hunts them down one by one getting them into the brig. Because he’s pretty sure they are his hallucinations that drive him nuts. Lieutenant Commander Spock accidentally opens Jim’s pod and he has his phaser aimed in the direction of Jim when the man comes stumbling out. Jim sees Spock and is absolutely smitten finding him adorable. "Like come on, that’s one adorable bowl hair cut. AND THE EYEBROWS, OMG I LOVE YOUR eyebrows how do you grow them out. You are so tall. I like your eyes. YOUR EARS ARE SO ADORABLE." Spock finds Jim irrational and illogical.  Spock opens his communicator and requests to be beamed off. Jim inadventurely joins Spock. McCoy discovers Jim is gone and he has a B S. O. D. in a really bad way being unsure if anything is real. He puts himself in the isolation ward for the safety of the ship and himself. He also locked himself in. McCoy grumble how this year started and how terrible it is going to be. Jim is nerve pinched by Spock. Spock intends to return for the captain and has Jim be beamed to the nearest planet that is arctic. There Jim meets (well, more like rescued by) Spock Prime who mistakes him for Kirk Prime and thinks he’s going home but it is not. Spock Prime has been alive, barely, with a severed link.
Jim and Spock Prime share a mind meld with a lot of emotional transference and memories being exchanged. Jim allows himself to have a temporary link with the vulcan on the way to the deserted warehouse to keep the old man alive in the freezing cold. Jim initiates the mind meld after the vulcan collapses to the snow. Spock Prime helps Jim to  the warehouse and explains that is other self is likely going to make a foolish mistake by attacking the starship when there is no reply. Jim realizes someone is aboard the  Enterprise, alive, alone without a companion.  And that’s why Spock was where he was and reacted the way he was, Spock Prime replies it was only logical his counterpart is attempting to retrieve his crewmates. Spock Prime beams Jim to the USS Archer and beams himself to the SS Enterprise to give himself a tour. It’s, different, that he can give credit for. He comes to the isolation ward to find McCoy in the corner, door locked, to see the doctor in a patient’s uniform. Spock Prime lures McCoy out by sweet talking him out talking about his husbands and how loving they are and how ddomestic they are--McCoy finally says, “How can this man I was told not to lose be in the brig?”  McCoy explains about the ordeal and he sees the Vulcan cry. Tears of happiness. Spock Prime convinces McCoy that he is real via a mind meld. McCoy cries into Spock Prime once convinced and shown that Jim is out. Spock Prime stays by the man’s side. Spock Prime takes  McCoy to Sick Bay and socializes with him talking about the differences in sick bay. He also does the standard procedure of using the medical tricorder on McCoy to check for any injury, internal, or covered injury. He uses the appropriate material to repair the doctor. Minutes later,Jim comes into sick bay. And they both sink to the floor. Spock Prime sees his younger self come in with a phaser.
Apparently Nero had attacked the Vulcan and claimed to be from the future. He left after severely damaging the Vulcanian landscape and buildings and there were injured Vulcans a few casualties, Amanda Grayson and Sarek were not among them nor was the ancient hall of thought. Spock is suspicious of his supposedly older self because who would be working with humans who had a part in Nero’s arrival. His brother, Sybok,a well known Healer, killed by the attack. McCoy gets in the way, “If you are goin’ to kill him then you might as well kill me first.” Spock reveals himself to be the elder but younger. McCoy refuses to budge even when the shock sank in. Spock falls to the ground and behind him is Pavel Chekov who appears to be unsure, “Did I not kill him? I didn’t mean to!” Spock Prime takes the communicator and requests the othership be prepared to beam up it’s officers in five minutes. Spock Prime’s red matter is collected and he informs  the captain of the Vulcan ship that he wishes to go home. Home was Earth. To reunite with his t’hy’lara but he needs his temporary link to be dissolved in order to go home and repair that link. Spock Prime shares one final mind meld with Jim and carefully shreds the bond. Spock Prime uses the jellyfish to quickly go to Earth after informing the captain and the crew when it should be used. Jim and McCoy stay awake. McCoy bypasses several regulations and cheats by making Jim captain instead of the long way as much as he does not like it.
There’s a convenient stasis pod malfunction and synthetic pod malfunction. Four hundred thirty synthetics awake. Christine Chapel,Hikaru Sulu,Nyota Uhura, Elizabeth Dehner, Kevin Riley,Gary Mitchell, and Janice Rand are awakened. Scotty, several engineer synthetics, several nurse synthetics, several science synthetics, and several communication officers, and a spare doctor synthetic named Geoffrey M’Benga and several security synthetics are awakened. McCoy recovers from his year long isolation with  people around him. They discover the contact to Earth has been intensified. Jim begins his captaincy trying to find his way to keep his crew alive while exploring new worlds and finding ones that are safe to visit or not. Jim starts out all right but he stumbles. The humans get to see messages from their families. Scotty is quite fine with Jim being captain. No replies from the primes.  It takes a few days but Spock Prime reaches Earth and has a emotional tearful reunion with his husbands at  the house.  They repair the severed link afterwards. Spock Prime wears a beanie when he goes to town with his Jim and McCoy. Spock Prime loves the sehlat. Back on the Enterprise, McCoy is fixing up Jim’s injuries when he introduces a new uniform with a black collar to Jim and a gray star on the chest. It’s a yellow shirt. The machines are hard at work making others like it. Everyone loves the colors: yellow and blue and red. It looks better than the blue suits. McCoy complains about how unsure Jim is about his command decisions and whines that he needs to assign a synthetic as a first officer that relies on logic. The USS Archer comes by with a battered Mayflower with a intact crew but the synthetics are dead. Winona is a engineer who gets to reunite with her son. The USS Archer tells Jim they are escorting the Winona to Earth  and will be joined shortly by NX Enterprise. Jm and Winona share a heartfelt reunion. Jim is shown a holoprogram of the refit starship and it makes his heart soar. He is a sucker for seeing old starships back in action. Eventually he is told that the Federation has decided to induct the Enterprise and oh, the planet they are headed to has some native population but they’ll get along as they are long, long, long lost ancestors in the 19th century., Around sixty-six thousand people populate the planet but their population is going on a decline due to some eugenic program and will be ready to repopulate by the time the Enterprise arrives. With that, T’Pau has arranged for a Vulcan hybrid to be dispatched to the Enterprise. S’Chn T’Gai Spock, after their designated first officer is destroyed and Scotty can’t put him together. Jim lays some ground rules.
1. Do not shoot at Bones.
2. Do not shoot at Jim.
3. Do not shot at Bones if he asks. He is joking.
4. Trust us.
4.5.  DO NOT SHOOT AT GARY. HE'S JUST THAT WAY.
4.9. YOU CANNOT FIRE AT ANYONE WITHOUT A LOGICAL REASON.
5. YOU CANNOT FIRE AT A FELLOW OFFICER. EXCEPT IF THEY ARE MIND CONTROLLED OR ANY OUTSIDE FACTORS OR BRAINWASHED. YOU CAN ONLY STUNN THEM. DO NOT VAPORIZE THEM.  OR NERVE PINCH THEM.
6. YOU MAY ONLY KILL US WHEN WE ARE RATIONAL AND IN OUR DAMN MIND.
7. Go home at the end of the 100 year mission.
3 YEARS LATER (SEASONS 1 - 3 HAPPENS), KRALL happens, but the synthetics get killed minus Scotty and Dorian. The stasis pods, the outer ring with all of them, spirals out and heads to the starbase yorktown. The Enterprise crew are seperated. Ben and Demora, part of Hikari's family were sent to the USS Yorktown during the beginning of the safe voyage with Spock aboard. Krall feeds off the synthetics life energy. At least the ones that remained which was close to four hundred. He comes across  Captain Pike and Number One who vigerously protects him. The SS Franklin is referred to Jaylah as her house. Nyota and Hikaru are terrified to those humans aboard the starbase with all types of aliens. Jim was contemplating becoming a vice admiral of the Yorktown when the attack had started and had sent in his form. Spock had been contemplating returning to Vulcan for his upcoming Pon-Farr. McCoy has made his decision. He is going after Jim once the mission is over. Krall is killed. Everyone is saved. At least what everyone is left save for the main large group that was left behind in the beginning. Jim changes his mind. Spock, however, does not, as he learns that T'Pring has a friend who is very close to her. And she has shown interest in Nyota Uhura who appears to be in a relationship with Christine Chapel. Spock weighs his conflict. The Enterprise A is unvieled 12 months later. Pavel is reassigned to the USS Reliant during the time as a security officer. Everyone is sad to go but they are happy that he is going somewhere. Pavel cries during their party and they welcome in a new ensign, a muslim navigator with a hijab, and Jim implies he will find a way for her to do her daily prayers. Spock decides to not resign from Star Fleet and decides, "why not?" He plans for Jim and McCoy to be his lek noy. His men of honor. And he prays to Surak that if he fails to go to Vulcan that he die alone. Spock is honestly terrified of dying. Jim promotes everyone. Every single member who is still around from the Battle of Altamid. Spock refuses his promotion. Jim argues but Spock's glare makes him give up. McCoy tries, he fails, getting the same glare. Their Prime counterparts are living with their aged sehlat and are happily married and retired. Jaylah goes to star fleet academy and will become a engineer and gets to be assigned to her new house. In 2286, the wrath of Khan will begin.
End  AU.

Titanic 20th Anniversary: Artworks Lost and Found at Sea
Tumblr media
Twenty years ago on December 19, 1997, Titanic splashed onto the big screen, shattering box office records. It is one of those quintessentially ‘90s films that reminds an entire generation of being a certain age at a certain time in a certain place, particularly resonating with young people for its Romeo and Juliet get wet theme. The two intervening decades are enough to make us kids who came of age back then feel like old Rose.
Tumblr media
Like its contemporary pop-culture opus, Clueless, which featured a work by Claes Oldenburg and coined the phrases “Botticelli chick” and “full-on Monet,” Titanic is liberally peppered with high-brow (albeit obvious) art history references. Rose’s first act upon boarding the ill-fated liner is to decorate her stateroom with what Cal calls her “finger paintings,” a collection of works by Monet, Degas, Cezanne, and “something Picasso.” Cal densely critiques, “Something Picasso...he won’t amount to a thing...at least they were cheap.”
Tumblr media
Kate Winslet as Rose inspecting her “something” Picasso, based on Les Demoiselles d’Avignon that Picasso had finished five years before the Titanic sank.
Jack later admires her taste in art before adding his own contribution, the iconic nude sketch of Rose wearing the Heart of the Ocean.
Tumblr media
The priceless masterpieces ultimately drift beneath the surface as the stateroom floods (by far the most tear-jerking scene for art nerds), and fortune hunters recover and restore Jack’s risque drawing almost a century after as the pivotal clue to the whereabouts of the diamond. Of course, art historians dispute that works by those artists went down on the Titanic, and a drawing on paper surviving 84 years under miles of ocean may seem a bit far fetched.
Tumblr media
Even so, here are some true cases of artworks lost and/or found at sea which prove that there was more than a kernel of plausibility to James Cameron's epic.
  Titanic: The Real Story
Tumblr media
Copy of La Circassienne au Bain by John Parker, after an original by Merry-Joseph Blondel (left). Hecuba and Polyxena by Merry-Joseph Blondel, at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (right), giving some idea of what the original might have looked like stylistically.
The fictional plot points of sunken masterpieces, a nude artwork, and an insurance claim on an outrageously expensive diamond lost aboard the Titanic have echoes of the real-life story of La Circassienne au Bain. The enormous neoclassical painting of a nude beauty debuted at the Louvre in 1814 to limited fanfare, but grew in reputation and popularity over time. Tragically, the work went down on the Titanic while in the possession of Swedish businessman Mauritz Hakan Björnström-Steffanson. Steffansson, who survived the disaster, filed a compensation claim for over two million dollars in today’s money. Thus, the painting was the most valuable item lost in the sinking, analogous to the famous “Heart of the Ocean” in the film.

    HMS Colossus
Tumblr media
Sir William Hamilton by George Romney, at the National Gallery of Art Washington DC (left). Lady Hamilton as Bacchante by Louise Elisabeth Vigee Le Brun, at the Lady Lever Art Gallery (right).
Sir William Hamilton is known for his diplomatic service on the eve of the Napoleonic Wars and his scandalous open marriage with Lady Emma Hamilton. Emma was a famous beauty and artistic muse who inspired the likes of Vigee Le Brun, Sir Joshua Reynolds, Angelika Kauffmann, and George Romney. She also just happened to be the mistress of Britain’s greatest hero, Admiral Horatio Nelson, himself a married man.
Sir William’s scandalous personal life overshadows his artistic contributions. While British Ambassador to Naples on the eve of the Napoleonic Wars, he accumulated a plethora of artistic treasures and antiquities, contributing immeasurably to the collections of such venerable institutions as the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum. Unfortunately, part of his priceless collection of classical Greek vases went down aboard the HMS Colossus en route from Naples to Britain in 1798. However, salvage diver Roland Morris discovered the wreck in 1974, including shards of the broken vases. After nearly 200 years in darkness on the ocean floor, the reconstructed vases now sit proudly in the British museum for all to see.

  Vrouw Maria
Tumblr media
Illustration of the Vrouw Maria before her sinking (left). Catherine II by Johann Baptist von Lampi the Elder, at the Museum of Art History Vienna (right).
In 1771, the Vrouw Maria set sail from Amsterdam to Saint Petersburg laden with masterpieces by a who’s who of the Dutch Golden Age, including Paulus Potter, Gerard ter Borch, Cornelis Coedyk, Gabriel Metsu, Gerard Dou, and Philip Wouwerman. Especially notable among the works were Potter’s Large Herd of Oxen and Borch’s Woman at her Toilette. The paintings were personal possessions of Empress Catherine the Great of Russia, bound for her newly founded State Hermitage Museum, but the ship went down in a storm off of Finland.

The Young Bull by Potter, at the Mauritshuis (left), probably in the style of Large Herd of Oxen. Surviving version of Lady at her Toilette by ter Borch, at the Detroit Institute of Arts (left), probably similar in composition to the lost version.
Yet, the story doesn’t end there. When the wreck was discovered in 1999, the cargo hold was intact and undisturbed, meaning that the contents must still be inside. The cold temperatures and low salinity of the Baltic Sea are ideal for the preservation of soft, organic materials such as canvas and wood. Furthermore, the works were sealed in wax for shipping, so if water hadn’t penetrated the seal, the paintings may very well survive in near-pristine condition after two and a half centuries. Hopes to salvage the paintings have thus far come to nothing, but recovery efforts continue, led by the Finnish National Board of Antiquities.
  SS Normandie
Tumblr media
History of Navigation by Jean Dupas, at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
The French government subsidized the lavish design and construction of the SS Normandie, even as millions starved in the Great Depression and the spectre of World War II loomed on the horizon. She dwarfed all earlier liners (including the Titanic) in size, speed, luxury, and elegant aesthetics, winning an unofficial reputation as the most beautiful liner ever built. This was due in large part to Jean Dupas’ breathtaking Art Deco murals that adorned the first class salon. In fact, the Normandie’s sleek interiors were so influential that “ocean liner style” was synonymous with Art Deco throughout the 1930s. Fittingly for a ship described as a “temple of beauty,” the Normandie played host to the world’s rich and famous during the golden age of travel, including art world celebrities like Frida Kahlo and Salvador Dali.

Photographs of Kahlo and Dali taken aboard the SS Normandie at the height of her glamour.
When France fell to the Nazis in 1939, the US commandeered the Normandie to serve as a troopship, and stripped her of most her decorative fixtures and (ill-advisedly) her fire containment system. Consequently, the ship caught fire in 1942 and capsized in the Hudson River, thankfully sans Dupas’ murals. The section in the Met (top) is the only full corner surviving intact, giving a taunting glimpse of the overall effect.

Demise of the SS Normandie in New York Harbor, 1942. Fun fact! Alfred Hitchcock used the shipwreck in the filming of his wartime thriller, Saboteur.
  Dress from the Deep
Tumblr media
Dress circa early 17th Century, at the Kaap Skil Museum, Netherlands.
In 2015, divers off the coast of the Netherlands discovered this 17th-Century silken gown, kept incredibly well-preserved under the protective sand for nearly 400 years. The odyssey of this dress and the woman who wore it unfolded in a swashbuckling tale fit for a James Cameron blockbuster in and of itself. In 1642, Queen Henrietta Maria of England’s retinue set sail for the Netherlands with the purported purpose of escorting her daughter to be a royal bride, but actually on a top-secret mission to hock the crown jewels to raise funds for the English Civil war. Entrusted with this mission was the Queen’s lady-in-waiting, Jean Kerr, Countess of Roxburghe. Jean was an adept spy who had previously funneled communications to the King of Spain in the service of her former mistress, Anne of Denmark. The voyage went sour when part of the royal fleet sank in a storm.

Historians might never have drawn the connection between Jean Kerr and this dress, had not a 1642 letter resurfaced referring to the Queen’s ladies losing their wardrobe at sea. Additionally, a book discovered alongside the garment is embossed with the coat of arms of King Charles I, husband of Henrietta Maria. Researchers singled out Jean Kerr among the royal entourage, since the dress matched her measurements and the style she favored. No doubt, this miraculous rediscovery gives hope to the millions of fangirls hoping to get their hands on some of Rose’s bomb-ass wardrobe in Titanic.
Tumblr media
Thus, our story comes to a close with the same moral lesson as Titanic: It’s never too late to get back your long-lost bling...
Tumblr media
  ...or your long-lost art.
