This is maybe not a great prompt but any thoughts or scenes from future Daniel and Max in your most recent fic? Don’t want to imply it wasn’t a complete story because it was (and so beautiful!!!) but I can’t stop thinking about it and was curious what’s in their future :)

Under the cut because it’s long, whoops.

Ok so, the fic mainlyyyy centers around max's journey becoming ok with people knowing about, what he considers, the bad part of him i.e that he likes guys, specifically daniel. And i think by the end, he feels mostly ok with people close to them (family, close friends like Michael and blake) knowing, but he does not want, say the people he works with at redbull, the people dan works with at mclaren, to know. Definitely does not want the media/general public to know, but that’s okay because daniel is a super private guy too and he feels the same. he just wanted to tell people important to him so this thing between them felt real because being in a super secret relationship can make you doubt it (speaking from experience lol). Max is okay with charles knowing because he knows charles likes guys too and charles also doesn’t want that to become public knowledge, so it feels safe to tell him (readers choice if carlando are a thing in this universe & if so maybeeee lando gets to know for the same reason haha).

I don’t think max completely cuts his dad off because i just dont see that ever happening and in real life i think its a difficult thing to do, completely cutting off a parent. i think he definitely limits their relationship, like j*s doesn’t come to the paddock anymore, they talk less on the phone, etc and they do. not. talk. about. daniel.

so max and daniel are happy, max gets to go to australia every winter break and be around daniels family who make him feel super loved and welcome and part of the family (it quickly becomes his fav place to be, and when he tells daniel that it makes him feel allll kinda ways), and he gets to go for dinners with his mom and sister and his nephews after races, on off days when they visit monaco. his sister starts calling daniel ‘uncle daniel’ to luka and leo and they learn to say it too and then that makes max feel allll kinda ways as well.

in my heart of hearts they both win a wdc each and this is important too. for daniel (in 2022, a gal can dream), it’s obvs his first and it allows him to get rid of any niggling jealousy (only jealousy, i don’t think daniel would resent max, he’s far too in love lol) he felt and makes him feel like he can be a better partner to max now because of it, can be happy for him in a pure, uncomplicated way. for max (in 2023), its another win but one without the controversy of the 2021 season, no one doubts he deserves it this time, and though he’s been happy his dad’s words have always stuck with him. the idea that he can’t have both, can’t have daniel and be a champion. then he gets to prove that wrong and it really feels like he has everything he could ever want.

THEN (sorry lol I’m on a roll) say it’s the 2024 season, three years of being in a relationship that only the closest people know about, and daniel has a big, red flag crash at the silverstone grand prix (sorry i love a bit of drama).

Max hears, “red flag, red flag” over the radio and he asks who and gets told “one of the mclarens.” later he feels guilty for thinking, please say lando, please say lando, but it’s not lando, “it’s ricciardo.” And max- he knows it’s bad because they’re saying so on the radio and he shakes all the way driving back to the pit lane, barely keeping to the slower speed limit. Jumps out of the car as soon as he’s stopped, demanding to know what’s happened and “is daniel out of the car?” everyone’s looking at him like he’s crazy, christian is yelling at him to get back in the car and no one is telling him anything useful. he thinks, god, i understand how daniel feels now because i could punch a wall, a door, then thinks oh god what if i never get to kiss his bruised knuckles and tell him he’s an idiot ever again and-

max hears is one of the mechanics take pity on him and say “he’s still in the car” and max can’t, has to lean against the wall, hunched over, and try not to throw up. he stays like that for a while, ignoring christian asking, gentler now, are u okay max? can u get back in the car please we still need to race? and then max hears Michael calling his name and he looks up to see him jogging over, saying “he’s out, he’s in an ambulance. they’re taking him to the hospital” and all max says is “can you drive me?” and then they’re leaving.

and then, at the hospital, the classic next of kin/what is your relationship to the patient situation happens and michael is daniel’s next of kin because, of course, no one really knows about max and daniel and michael is always with daniel. so max has to sit in the little waiting room while michael goes through to be briefed by the doctors, promises he’ll text max every little detail. and max sits there thinking, oh god, what if, what if, what if, until he can’t take it. he’s being stupid, he left a race in the middle of the season he’s competing for a third wdc to go be with daniel in hospital. everyone will know anyway and it doesn’t even matter he just- he needs to be with him.

so he walks up to the nurses desk, says “can you tell me where daniel ricciardo is? he’s my- boyfriend. we live together, i- i just need to see him” and the super lovely angel nurse coo’s over him and leads him through. michael doesn’t ask any questions, doesn’t say anything just lets max sit next to him in silence in a different waiting room while people check daniel out. he’s having some kinda scan (i know nothing about medicine, sorry) to see if there’s any brain bleeding/internal damage and max just counts the floor tiles over and over until they finally tell michael and max that he’s fine, has a bad concussion that they want to keep him in for a bit to monitor but he’s awake, they can go see him.

and then daniel is smiling at max, like nothing happened, shit eating grin saying “aren’t you meant to be racing, maxy?” and max wants to kiss him and punch him in the face, but can’t do either because he doesn’t want to bang daniel’s head. micheal gives them a minute and daniel pats the space next to him on the bed and max crawls into his arms, rests his head so carefully on daniel’s chest. tells daniel quietly that they need to let their teams know about them, because if anything happens to daniel again- “I need to be here, with you. not expected to race.”

and so they tell mclaren and redbull! and pretty much the whole paddock knows then! but they’re still pretty cagy about it with the media, it kinda becomes a question they always get asked about in interviews but never give anything away (e.g. Reporter: Max, why did you ABANDON a race when Ricciardo crashed, Max: we’re very close :) i had to make sure he is okay :) meanwhile, daniel makes the same dirty jokes he’s always made so ?? is he confirming stuff or just being him?? the reporters can never tell and eventually get bored of asking about it)

but THEN (last thing, i promise) they get photographed HOLDING HANDS in monaco and it gets published in the sports section of every paper, the front page of some, and everyone loses their shit. Max avoids reading the articles like the plague but daniel makes sure to read him all the nice comments people leave about them on twitter, tells him “people ship us, maxy!” and max just looks at him confused like, “we are not boats.”

the advice you gave about starting a chapter was really helpful! thank you!! do you have advice for planning longer fics bc I just jump in and then they're all messy and dont get finished :(

Oh, I’m glad it helped! I’ve got some tips that might help with both SPN and future fics below the cut. To absolutely no one’s surprise this ended up being super long (im so sorry I just got done with an investigation and im tired and definitely not as articulate as I wanted to be)

Honestly, same. I still do that even with fics I plan out because I’m terrible and change things up in the middle of writing and make my plans obsolete lol. My favorite way to plan is normally I get a word doc and outline how many chapters I want to do, making it a preset number so I don’t drag it out and I can see a definitive stopping point. It helps to keep me from going on way too long because that’s a terrible habit of mine. Having that hard stopping point also lets you see exactly how long you have to make something happen. Want the characters in love by chapter 20? you know you have 19 chapters leading up to that where you need to let the romance blossom, and you can easily space out interactions/events to help things move along naturally. I do this more with my original writing, though if I’m doing fanfiction for a show that’s finished airing I can build around that because things wont be changing.

My only exception to the hard limit chapter thing is when I do super long fanfics for shows that haven’t finished airing. With those, I leave the chapters open with full knowledge I’ll have to go through and adjust my plans. I started my Criminal Minds fic when season 5 was airing, and I can’t even tell you how many times I’ve had to completely redo my plan to keep up with everything. Be ready to be flexible, but ensure you’ve got that solid outline to fall back on and it’ll be easier to flow with the changes as you need to make them, because if you have to edit something early on, you already know what needs to happen three seasons from now and you can account for that (it also really helps with accuracy and foreshadowing!). With Supernatural, this’ll be easy since we’re essentially done and you know exactly how things will play out for the world you’re building around.

In the unusual case you’re writing for a fandom/show that doesn’t really end, this is especially a thing to keep in mind. Things like sports (wrestling, hockey, soccer, etc) are ones that can literally go on and on, but it can apply to a fic about a celebrity too. For example, I have a WWE fic that I have intricately planned over an 8 year run of episodes and a plan is crucial. I have no idea when I’m gonna end it (😅😭) so the outline is so important.

Find a way to plan that works for you. Some people like reading transcripts of shows (and SPN has like all of their transcripts up), but I prefer watching the episodes I’m gonna incorporate my character into and writing notes of how they’ll blend into the world as I go along. I find this is fun too because you can also take note of how the other characters act, what the scene is like, etc.
