Art trade with @yakultyeet who requested an extra for Initiative (the NMJ/JYL fic), potentially involving Nie Rulan
ao3
“Are you sure you should be exercising?” Wei Wuxian asked for about the fifth time, because he could be a terrible nag when he wanted. “What if you get hurt?”
Jiang Yanli was a good, virtuous, and loving older sister, so she didn’t roll her eyes at him. Neither did she smack him on the head, or ruffle his hair, or anything like that.
“Hypocrisy doesn’t suit you,” she teased instead. “Aren’t you and Hanguang-jun getting a name for yourselves as ‘always being where the chaos is’? If anyone should be worrying about anyone, it’s me for you!”
Wei Wuxian flushed pink, which was a new development that had first appeared on this particular visit to the Unclean Realm, and one that Jiang Yanli hadn’t expected. She’d remarked to Nie Mingjue just the night before that if she hadn’t known that he was only traveling around with Lan Wangji, she might have assumed he’d developed an infatuation for someone, or even lost his heart.
Her husband had blinked owlishly at her – it had been late, both of them long since tucked into bed, and his mind mostly on other things, including the current contents of her swollen belly – and he’d asked if there was a reason she was discounting the possibility that he had.
(“Obviously if there’s some history there, I wouldn’t presume to say anything,” he’d assured her as she had, in turn, blinked at him as if he’d lot his mind. “But the way they interacted during the war was always so emotionally charged, I’d assumed there was some attraction there at the very least, and it wouldn’t be that surprising for comrades-in-arms of a that particular inclination and orientation to eventually discover the other’s presence and potential after the circumstances are no longer so pressing…”
“Inclination?” Jiang Yanli had asked, still blinking. “Orientation? What?”
“…isn’t Wei Wuxian a cutsleeve?”
“What? No, of course not. He flirts with girls all the time.”
“A-Li, from what I’ve seen, he flirts with everyone all the time. What does flirting have to do with who he likes? Some people are just born flirts – look at Huaisang.”
Jiang Yanli had had to concede the point, and thinking back on it, she really couldn’t say if Wei Wuxian had ever actually expressed serious interest in any girl. Was it possible…?)
It certainly seemed a lot more likely now.
“Ah, me and Lan Zhan, that’s nothing, nothing much,” Wei Wuxian said, still pink, and then he shook his head purposefully. “Anyway, it’s different! You’re taking care of two instead of one!”
Jiang Yanli’s eyes curved with laughter. “Why, A-Xian, are you saying you’re not taking care of Hanguang-jun…?”
“Shijie, don’t be mean –”
“You’re the one who doesn’t have a golden core,” she reminded him, and he winced, even though they’d all already shed all the tears and done all the yelling they could possibly have done on the subject back when it had first been made clear to them. “And you’re out there night-hunting and doing all sort of wild things, left and right, every day. I’m just sitting here at home. There’s no need for concern.”
“I still think that lunk of a husband of yours ought to be taking better care of you,” Wei Wuxian grumbled.
“My husband is taking excellent care of me. Should I tell him you think he’s a lunk now?”
“No!”
Jiang Yanli giggled. She knew exactly how much Wei Wuxian admired Nie Mingjue – more and more, these days, really. That advice he’d given him about making a new name for himself had really changed his life, and Wei Wuxian’s respect for him, always strong, had turned into something near to hero worship, though naturally Wei Wuxian would never admit it.
It’d only gotten worse after Nie Mingjue had gruffly told both Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng that, on account of them all being in-laws now, they might as well both join Nie Huaisang (and Lan Xichen and Jin Guangyao) in calling him da-ge. He’d meant it primarily as a means to make clear to the world that no one should even think about messing with either of them lest they have to deal with the maddened fury of the Nie sect, but apparently a reliable big brother was something right out of a fantasy for both of them. Her delightfully silly brothers, each one worse than the next…
“Anyway, you really don’t need to worry,” she said. “I see a doctor every morning, the training-masters are always monitoring my training, and training the saber during the middle stages of pregnancy is completely normal here – firstly because it provides me with a good bit of exercise that isn’t too stressful, given the low grade of the basic routines I’m practicing, and secondly because it’s good luck. Supposedly it means that my child with have a good affinity with their saber.”
“Da-ge’s mother must have done nothing but practice,” Wei Wuxian said, and Jiang Yanli laughed in agreement. “And Nie-xiong’s must have done none at all.”
“Based on what I’ve heard of her, she wasn’t the saber sort,” Jiang Yanli agreed. Nie Mingjue had recounted, to Nie Huaisang’s laughter and Jiang Yanli’s delight, how he had had to sit around and make pleading puppy eyes to convince his Second Mother to take a few rounds with the saber for the good of her own health – apparently Nie Huaisang had come by his laziness quite honestly. “Though actually you’ll find that his affinity with his saber is perfectly all right.”
Wei Wuxian looked disbelieving.
“According to him, his saber’s dream is to be a paperweight.”
Wei Wuxian sniggered. “All right, that I’ll believe!” He shook his head, then glanced at her sidelong. “You’re really happy here, aren’t you?”
“I am,” she said. “I’m very happy. Why do you ask?”
“No – no, it’s nothing. It’s just interesting, that’s all – it’s so different from home here.”
Jiang Yanli nodded solemnly. “Oh yes,” she said. “It’s very different, but it’s something you get used to – something you grow to love. It’s easier than you might think.”
“Oh?”
“Yes. It’s easy because you love the people that are there so much, and the places they grew up shape them, so you see little pieces of them in everything. The training grounds, the forests, the streams…” She glanced at Wei Wuxian, who was nodding along thoughtfully. “Are you asking because you’re thinking of marrying out?”
“Shijie!”
“It’s quite all right if you do, of course. Though since you’re both men and there’s no likelihood of children, maybe you could split your time between the Lotus Pier and the Cloud Recesses equally –”
“Shijie! How did you know?”
“A big sister always knows,” Jiang Yanli lied through her teeth, and turned a grin on him. “So, are you going to finally stop trying to hide it from me? Tell me everything!”
He laughed. “All right, all right – there’s not much to tell, not really –”

Headcanons for Su She
(I post way too much Su She content - it’s barely 10, but that’s a lot for me - but I have so much to say, and I can’t do that in the fanfiction I’m writing so I need to just throw it all out to calm down.)
He’s dyslexic. It’s a stretch because he’s in the Lan sect of all sects, but like how many children in our own modern time are left under the radar for certain disabilities, I think Su She may have been one of them in his own small family of scholars. He would have been regarded as simply slow for his inability to read or write correctly, chucking it up as forgetfulness or lack of attention when at truth, his brain literally can’t connect words to meaning, especially with how intricate and complicated the Chinese writing system is. So his family threw him at the Lan sect to improve it (but really just threw him in there so it wasn’t their problem anymore and they had something to say when their shameful family member is called uneducated.)
He has a trained echoic memory. Unable to read or write, Su She relies heavily on listening, so that he doesn’t fall behind on his education. He knows all 3,000 rules by heart, being able to recite any number thrown at him. He can also play any song by listening to it only once since he’s trained himself to listen intently, but the reason he plays them wrongly after building a sect is because of the trauma. He remembers how his deceased friends who died at the Burning would play it incorrectly during practice, and he unconsciously plays the notes that way. Sometimes, it’s simply because playing the music is too painful, where Su She would suffer ghostly stings as if the strings had burnt him. Unable to read music sheets, he can’t correct himself unless someone better trained does it. But even the other former lan sect disciples aren’t experts, so to make up for their mistakes, they do remixes of the tunes, or try to create new music. Modernizing classical music basically.
He is a natural hand-to-hand fighter, which is two-for-two in the Lan sect who do not engage in hand-to-hand combat. Their muscles mostly coming from insane disciplinary training like writing while hand standing. Su She excels in the little bit of physical portions in their lesson, being able to hand stand for hours and do acrobatic tricks with no problem but they don’t actually mean much to the Lan sect. Su She would’ve excelled if he had been sent to the Nie sect or Jiang sect, so he’s not untalented. He’s just incorrectly placed.
Su Minshan never intended to be like Lan Wangji. He did admire him for being an example, but Su Minshan was simply following the rules and doing his best to follow them. I also like to think he held more nuance for the rules than the actual Lan members. Where the Lan sect was fixed and rigid with their rules and Lan Xichen’s certain liberties would be considered ‘bending them’, Su Minshan was more flexible with them, which isn’t a hot take. He is an outsider after all so he had free reign to properly question these rules and come to his own conclusions. Like the rule “promiscuity is prohibited”. To Lan Qiren and his nephews, that means to not act sexual or flirtatious at all like the traditional monk. But for Su Minshan, it means to not weaponize your sex-appeal, but harmless flirting and consensual promiscuous behavior is fine.
He was bullied for his slowness (dyslexia), being abandoned by his family, and trying to be like Lan Wangji (忘机), which gave him the nickname Su Wangji (忘记). As you can see, they have the same “Wan” character (忘) but they have different “Ji” character (机/记). They are different both phonetically and in definition where “机” has a more graceful tone and means “machine/opportunity/quick-witted” while  “记” is more direct making it easier to sound harsher and it means “to remember”, so the kids would go “JIJIJIJIJI!” which is also the chirping of insects, so while also calling Su Minshan someone forgetful, forgotten, without an identity, they also call him an insect. And in China, calling someone an insect means calling them “aimless”, so in conclusion, these children are calling Su Minshan “a nobody with no path” while mocking him to remember stuff. He doesn’t blame Lan Wangji because he didn’t spur this bullying, but after the war, Lan Wangji’s own unfair judgement against him brings forth this childish resentment for his bullying.
His gripe with the Lan sect isn’t out of pride but because of Lan Qiren’s choice to save the books and the elite disciples instead of preserving the Lan sect as a whole. He doesn’t blame Lan Xichen or Lan Zhan because he understands that they have to listen to their elders. His hatred for the Lan sect is directly at Lan Qiren for sacrificing the lives of his friends and his teachers, the only family he knew, for his legacy and books. And it doesn’t get any easier when the reality of making such a selfish hypocritical decision that had led to the search for Lan Xichen which resulted in the burnings of cities and towns within the Jiangsu Province just for this one man who only survived by luck.
Su Minshan didn’t push Mianmian out of fear, but out of anger against Lan Wangji. Yes, he doesn’t blame Lan Wangji for Lan Qiren’s choice, but that was when he was able to calm down. But at that time, he was angered that Lan Wangji was once again willing to risk everyone’s life just for one, but afterwards, he does become ashamed of himself, and tries to right his wrong with helping, but messed up. Su Minshan then kicked himself out of the Lan sect right afterwards because he was deeply ashamed of his actions in the cave, and he never forgave himself even though Mianmian did forgive him.
He became a sect leader because he was encouraged to by others. Like yeah, what the general crowd believes is that Su She made his sect out of feelings of inferiority, and he does have feelings of inferiority, but to become a sect leader isn’t an easy thing to do. You first of all need money, and then resources and lastly followers. He lacked the first two categories, but he must’ve gained followers during the war when he went off on his own to do what little he could to help with the war. But why would they follow Su Minshan who wasn’t that great of a cultivator? Well, cultivators and people were literally scattered after the Wens took everything of theirs, and yes, other sects were accepting disciples, but it takes confidence in thinking they will be accepted when a whole flood of other more talented cultivators were joining. Su Minshan was the more promising and safer option, and I think he proved to have leadership skills during the war now that he wasn’t clouded by the Lans, especially around the Western side of the Jiangsu province, so people gravitated towards him.
Su Minshan doesn’t only idolize Jin Guangyao because he remembers his name, but because Jin Guangyao saving Lan Xichen and ending the war, made everyone’s death and sacrifices not meaningless. Which I think plays a bigger part of why Su Minshan tolerates Jin Guangyao’s relationship with Lan Xichen. Honestly, I think Su Minshan holds absolutely zero resentment against Lan Xichen because of the reasons I already stated, and unlike Lan Wangji, Lan Xichen doesn’t judge him negatively either. Not because he doesn’t like judging, but because he is actually aware of what Su Minshan’s genuine issue is because he’s aware of the tragedies his action caused, and it lands harder now that they are both Sect leaders, but he leaves him alone because he doesn’t want to drudge up any unnecessary pain. The damage is too great.
I feel it in my bones that Su Minshan is the master of smack talking. It’s the reason him and Xue Yang would be able to get along. I think it’s the reason Jin Guangyao and him would be able to be as close comrades as they are. I mean devotion is good and all, but like Meng Yao and Xue Yang grew up in the streets and not the good kind, so I don’t think their casual talk is not at all what “Villainous Friends” would be. Like yeah, Jin Guangyao is trying to be all gentleman like and is constantly on edge, but I think in the privacy of his mirror room, he would speak in the strong accent that the Jiang disciples have been written to have, but ten times more harsher. Like think from a pompous British accent to the Italian expressive one. And when Jin Guangyao does have those days and Su Minshan is around, he always have the most clever, below the belt comment to make, which always gets either a jaw drop or a laugh out of the other two. Xue Yang would even do a mock bow when Su Minshan makes extremely clever ones that would’ve gone over other people’s heads.

Newspapers play an important role in communities all around the world. Many people's news consumption habits have changed as a result of the Information Age, but local newspapers remain vital resources for readers interested in learning more about and getting more involved in their communities.
Now we will see some of the benefits of reading local news:
Local newspapers keep readers up-to-date on their own communities: Globalization may be here to stay, but it doesn't mean that important events no longer take place in local areas. National and international newspapers, as well as 24-hour cable news programmes, can keep men and women informed about national and worldwide events, but in many cases, local newspapers are the only source of information on what's going on in their own areas. Local politics has a daily impact on citizens' lives, and local newspapers cover it extensively.
Local newspapers benefit nearby businesses:  Local newspapers are frequently used by small company owners to engage with community people. A robust, locally based small business community may boost economies in a variety of ways, including by providing jobs and donating tax revenue to support local schools and infrastructure. Local newspapers also play a role by offering local company owners who want to engage with their communities affordable and effective advertising space. You can read business news today at hyd7am.
Local newspapers can strengthen communities: Residents who want to become more involved in their communities and learn more about local events might use local newspapers as a resource. Community events such as carnivals, local theater shows, and projects such as park cleanups are frequently featured in local publications. These are excellent ways for readers to become more involved in their communities and, as a result, develop stronger communities.
Local newspapers can benefit children: Local newspapers tend to include more soft news items than national periodicals, and such stories are typically appropriate for young readers. National newspapers may have little age-appropriate content to offer young children, but local newspapers tend to include more soft news items than national periodicals, and such stories are typically appropriate for young readers. Students in a Florida NIE group did much higher in spelling and vocabulary than nonreaders, according to Newspapers in Education. According to other research, students who read newspapers in class perform better on standardized reading tests than students who do not read newspapers in class.
Many local newspapers have played an important role in their communities for decades, serving as a go-to resource for residents and business owners alike.

it ended up a little all over the place but hope you’ll find it helpful! 💙

Since you like cute fluffy prompts, how about everyone assumes LWJ and WWX will end up together for political reasons (which is fine, it's a smart match) but then slowly come to the realization that they actually really like each other?
Celebratory arranged marriage fic! This is probably not what you expected, but oh well! :D
---
"Wangji, are you sure this is what you want?" Lan Xichen asked.
Lan Xichen had invited Lan Wangji to the Hanshi to have tea with him, and although Lan Wangji had expected his brother to have something on his mind that he did not want to discuss in front of their uncle, he would have preferred if his brother had not voiced his concerns. It would have made things... easier.
Lan Wangji studied the bottom of his teacup for a long time before he was able to raise his gaze to meet the concerned eyes of his brother and speak.
"Xiongzhang," he finally said. "I have agreed to the proposal. I am not... unwilling. I never expected to fall in love."
Lan Xichen looked like he wanted to say something, but one glance from Lan Wangji had him maintain his silence.
"I do not place value on such impermanent emotions. To have a steady companion will be enough."
"Oh, Wangji," Lan Xichen sighed. "Sometimes I fear Uncle has had too much success with your education. You deserve to be loved, you know?"
Lan Wangji did not know how to reply to that.
He was not unhappy, that was the truth.
He had long known that a political marriage would be an inevitability, eventually. The steadily aggravating situation with the Qishan Wen sect, Jin Guangshan's own questionable ambitions; it had only been a matter of time until the other sects saw their hand forced. It was only natural that they would want to strengthen their own alliances and raise their defences. Arranged marriages were only too common in situations as these.
He should be glad, he thought, that his chosen partner would be Wei Wuxian. His uncle might not be as happy with the choice, might have preferred someone else, perhaps a woman. But to Lan Wangji, it had been the best choice out of the few that he had had. The Gusu Lan and Yunmeng Jiang sects needed a stronger alliance, and barring marrying Jiang Wanyin himself, Wei Wuxian had been the best choice. Naturally, Madam Yu would insist that Jiang Wanyin's wife would be a woman, someone that could bear the future sect heir.
Thinking rationally, choosing Wei Wuxian had been less of a choice and more of a given. The marriage needed to be both strong in terms of the ties that it created, but also unoffensive enough so that no other sects would object.
The only other possible choice would have been Nie Huaisang. But considering that Nie Mingjue and Lan Xichen were already sworn brothers, the alliance to the Jiang sect took precedence.
Lan Xichen sighed again.
"I just want you to be happy, Wangji."
"I am content, Xiongzhang. There is no cause for unhappiness."
His brother said nothing, but Lan Wangji could read his thoughts on his face.
After all, he had deliberately evaded referring to himself as 'happy.'
---
When he had agreed to the marriage, he had thought about Wei Wuxian, and felt a sliver of worry. Lan Wangji might be content to marry for politics, and settle for nothing more than a companion, but he had always felt that Wei Wuxian would want more than that.
Wei Wuxian had always been a passionate person; it followed that he would be a passionate man when it came to love, as well.
Instead, he was going to marry Lan Wangji.
Would he be content with simple companionship? Lan Wangji had considered it once, offering Wei Wuxian the opportunity to practice... certain activities outside the marriage, to keep a lover on the side. But something deep inside him rebelled against the idea. He didn't know if he would be able to live with the knowledge that his husband would seek the embrace of another.
And Wei Wuxian had agreed to the marriage, after all. He had known who Lan Wangji was when he agreed, and he had known the conditions attached to the marriage.
Still, there was the smallest nagging voice in the back of his head that told him that someone like Wei Wuxian was made for love. Not for marrying men like Lan Wangji for the sake of politics. He still remembered when Wei Wuxian had visited Cloud Recesses for the first time. He had heard that Wei Wuxian had calmed down a little since he had become an adult, but Lan Wangji remembered all too well how much of a flirt he had been, how openly he had carried all his emotions on his sleeve. Wei Wuxian had not been made for politics.
Still, the marriage would happen. They had both agreed to the proposal, their families had agreed to the proposal. Soon, they would be here, and Lan Wangji would be a married man.
---
"So," Wei Wuxian smiled once they were finally alone, back in the familiar quiet of the Jingshi. "Looks like we're married, huh? I feel a little bad for you - you must have wanted a nice, quiet wife, and yet here you are, with someone who's neither nice, quiet, nor a wife."
He let his eye wander over the room in front of him, and Lan Wangji wondered what it looked like to Wei Wuxian's eyes. As the rest of Cloud Recesses, it must seem like a horribly boring place to him.
Lan Wangji himself had no eyes for the room in front of him, however. He looked at Wei Ying, resplendent in his red wedding robes, and tried to remember if Wei Wuxian had already been this handsome before, or if the maids had simply done an excellent job in anticipation of the wedding ceremony. He truly looked like a heavenly prince, in his red robes, his hair half done up with an elaborate braid, decorated with a hair piece that had been part of Lan Wangji's betrothal gifts.
"What about the living arrangements?" Wei Wuxian asked, rousing Lan Wangji from his thoughts.
Lan Wangji frowned. "It is customary that we share the Jingshi with each other."
Wei Wuxian sent him a look he found difficult to decipher.
"Is that what you want?" he asked. "Forgive me my bluntness, Lan Zhan, but I cannot help but think that my presence here will be a disturbance for you. I don't want to force you into bearing my presence and suffer my noise. I know you don't like to be touched; you can hardly be wanting to share a bed with me."
Lan Zhan felt his heart thump loudly. He had considered before that it was possible that Wei Wuxian might insist on a token marriage. That was essentially what it was, after all. But now that he was faced with Wei Wuxian's evident dislike of the idea to cohabit, he found himself... disappointed.
"I had hoped for companionship," he found himself saying, hardly even knowing what he was doing. "I- No. It does not matter. If you are unwilling to share quarters, I will look for another room. The Jingshi is yours."
His answer was met with wide, disbelieving eyes.
"Lan Zhan!" Wei Wuxian exclaimed. "Why would you think I'd be unwilling to share? Or throw you out of your own home? I was trying to be respectful of your wishes! I-"
He suddenly fell silent.
"Wei Ying."
Wei Wuxian sent him another unreadable look.
But Lan Wangji was good at waiting people out. He stood there, silent, as he studied the beautiful embroidery on Wei Wuxian's robes, and watched his husband consider his answer.
"I had hoped for a hug," Wei Wuxian suddenly burst out. "That's it. I know I can't expect much from this marriage, Lan Zhan, and I don't want to force you into anything you don't want to, but I had hoped for at least a hug, now and then.  If I can't-"
He bit his lips and fidgeted with the seams of his robes.
"Look at me, doing my best to fuck this marriage up on the wedding night," he said, laughing quietly, even though there was nothing funny about it.
"Wei Ying," Lan Wangji said again. Wei Ying looked at him, and Lan Wangji was almost sure there was something akin to fear in his eyes.
That was… distasteful. He did not want his own husband to be afraid of him. And he would never want-
He himself remembered a time when a hug had been all he had wanted, but he had never had the courage to ask for it. And now, all he had left was the bitter taste of regret.
He tried to find the right words that would adequately express that he was willing to work for the success of this marriage, token or not. That he was willing to accommodate Wei Wuxian, within the realms of possibility. They had both agreed to this marriage. They had to pay the price.
But the words would not come, not as he wanted them to.
In the end, he could do nothing but uselessly lift his arms.
"I will hug Wei Ying," he said.
It was terribly nonsensical and did not help in illustrating the point he was trying to make. But Wei Wuxian smiled a sudden, brilliant smile, and stepped right into his arms as if it were nothing.
"Mh," Wei Wuxian said, his face pressed into Lan Zhan's shoulder.
And Lan Wangji closed his arms, giving the promised hug.
Maybe that was enough, for now.
---
The next morning, Lan Wangji woke before dawn, as he always did.
For once, however, things were a little different.
On this morning, he woke with Wei Wuxian still in his embrace, his face buried in Lan Wangji’s shoulder, occasionally huffing out a deep breath that warmed Lan Wangji’s skin through his wrinkled robe.
Lan Wangji considered his new reality for a moment. He decided that the assessment he had given his brother had been accurate:
He might just be able to be contented, indeed.

Something that is so rarely talked about but is actually very good is that Xiao XingChen and Nie MingJue are basically cut from the same cloth. They were allies! At one point they stood side-by-side and sealed their tragic fates over the same cause.
Xiao XingChen, not Nie MingJue, was the first person to press the Jin Sect to severely punish Xue Yang for what happened to the Chang Clan. No one at the time knew that Xue Yang, a guest cultivator of the Jin Sect, was their secret Demonic Cultivation mastermind and Stygian Tiger Seal repairman. Wei WuXian was dead and the Jin Sect were still trying to rise up to be as the Wen Sect once were, but now this famous young cultivator who is still nonetheless an outsider is trying to make them cut off their own right hand.
Please just imagine Xiao XingChen standing in the main hall at Jinling Tower. He has receipts in his hands of all of Xue Yang’s crimes. Xue Yang, as Xiao XingChen’s prisoner, is probably sitting there wrapped in ropes and chains, but looks like he hasn’t a care in the world. It’s a Discussion Conference so all the powerful and prestigious people are there--except one. Everyone is nodding in agreement that yes, Xiao XingChen has brought excellent evidence! They have no objection to Xue Yang being executed.
But while no one objects to executing Xue Yang, no one else present is supporting execution, either, because Jin GuangShan isn’t supporting it. So Xiao XingChen can talk everyone’s ears off but it’s not going to change anything. The Jin Sect don’t care about justice. Xiao XingChen might be famous but he’s still an outsider. He’s powerless here. But he still doesn’t back down! A stalemate ensues and he still doesn’t back down!
And then the doors bust open and the light shines through and--Nie MingJue has arrived! Nie MingJue who was chilling at home until he got news of the complete and utter fuckery going on. He is the one and only person to give Xiao XingChen actual support because you know what? Xiao XingChen is right! The receipts are right there! And Nie MingJue doesn’t have the patience of Xiao XingChen to let the Jin Sect hem and haw over what to do to a now red-handed mass murderer.
Neither Xiao XingChen nor Nie MingJue have anything to gain from causing this scene, but it’s the right thing to do, so they do it.
"Taking advantage of the Discussion Conference that was happening at the Jinling Tower of the Lanling Jin Sect's residence, when the most prominent sects met up and discussed cultivation methods, Xiao XingChen brought [Xue Yang] over, explained the situation, and demanded severe punishment.
"With his straightforward list of evidence, most sects didn't have any objections, except for one--the Lanling Jin Sect. (ch. 30, ERS)
...
Although the Lanling Jin Sect was determined on protecting Xue Yang, Xiao XingChen didn't waver either. As the stalemate continued, they finally startled ChiFeng-Zun, Nie MingJue, who didn't intend on participating in the Discussion Conference. He hurried over to Jinling Tower from far away." (ch. 30, ERS)
Nie MingJue, who was minding his own business, is the one who breaks the stalemate. On a side note, it’s interesting how Nie MingJue didn’t even attend this Discussion Conference, which are usually sizeable affairs with many leaders present. We know that Nie MingJue does not usually stick his nose in where it doesn’t belong. Although he once called for the punishment of the Wen remnants after the Sunshot Campaign, he never followed through until Wen Ning killed Nie cultivators at Jinling Tower (wow, that must have been really convenient for the Jin Sect who wanted all the other sects to rally with them again Wei WuXian! Not suspicious at all. Having a secret demonic cultivator who could have taken control of Wen Ning on staff is quite a perk.) By all means, Nie MingJue has had enough of death and war, and he wants to focus on his mental health and home.
But it’s hard for Nie MingJue to stay out of a problem when Xiao XingChen has the evidence against a mass murderer who should rightfully be severely punished.
"Ever since Xue Yang was brought to Jinling Tower by Xiao XingChen, he hadn't been scared at all. Even when Nie MingJue's saber was pressed against his neck, he still had a grin on his face."
It’s easy to be confident when Xue Yang knows he’s untouchable, and he’s untouchable because he knows the Jin will do everything in their power to protect him.
Nie MingJue ends the stalemate by 1. giving Jin GuangShan an angry lecture (FINALLY someone stands up against Jin GuangShan!) and 2. scolding Jin GuangYao into silence for trying to calm everyone down (because Jin GuangYao only cares about appearances and not content).
"In the end, the Lanling Jin Sect could only give in."
So Xiao XingChen's efforts and evidence were good, everyone agreed they were good, but everyone was going to ignore him until Nie MingJue tackled the problem from another angle. Although Jin GuangShan and Jin GuangYao are lying about giving in, at the moment, Xiao XingChen and Nie MingJue get to part as unlikely allies.
Keep in mind this is the first and only time Nie MingJue goes against the Jin Sect directly. Nie MingJue had been the only person against the establishment of the Chief Cultivator position, but that situation never got heated. The Nie Sect is, however, the one sect that has been the greatest threat to Jin Sect domination since the Sunshot Campaign ended. So by Nie MingJue finally standing his ground here and now in a very public fashion by showing that the Jin are not allowed to do whatever they selfishly want, the Jin Sect is feeling very uneasy in their world domination plans.
But the matter is now publicly settled with the confirmation of Xue Yang’s upcoming execution. Xiao XingChen goes back into the world to be the best Bright Moon and Gentle Breeze he can be. Nie MingJue goes back home to mind his own business. (Remember how he wasn't even going to attend the conference! He wasn’t even acting like a public figure, throwing his weight around, until Xiao XingChen needed a heavy hitter on his team!) So whenit’s revealed that the Jin Sect lied, only one of them hears the news.
"The Lanling Jin Sect was indeed the sect with the thickest face. Although, on Jinling Tower, it promised in front of all the sects that Xue Yang would be executed, when it left Nie MIngJue's sight, it immediately shut Xue Yang into the dungeons and changed the original decision to a life sentence."
Who is left to continue fighting this battle on Xiao XingChen's behalf but Nie MingJue, the one person who actually agreed with him?
Xiao XingChen and Nie MingJue are literally hand-in-hand when it comes to justice. Nie MingJue uses his position as a Sect Leader of equal standing to Jin GuangShan to try to hold the Jin Sect responsible--and to keep the Jin from acting like the Wen Sect before them.
"Hearing about the matter, Nie MingJue was enranged and pressed on them again. The Lanling Jin rambled about, refusing to give him Xue Yang no matter how hard he tried. All of the other sects watched them from the sidelines, but, shortly afterward, Nie MingJue passed away from a qi deviation."
A qi deviation! Wow, what a coincidence, huh?? That sure made this rock and a hard place that Xiao XingChen and Nie MingJue pushed the Jin into go away real fast! Jin GuangYao says during the stair scene that he doesn’t want to lose his status and position, and that he is willing to sacrifice the lives of everyone else in order to prioritize his own standing. Nie MingJue insulted Jin GuangYao on a personal level, but the real issue is that he was continuing to press the Jin Sect to execute Xue Yang, which would mean the whole Jin Sect would lose their upper hand.
Nie MingJue's last public act was upholding justice and holding the Jin Sect accountable. The Jin Sect wanted to be in charge of everything as the Chief Cultivator but were doing a piss poor job at it already. He only approached Jin GuangYao when he was getting nowhere with Jin GuangShan, because wasn't Jin GuangYao supposed to be a good person? Wasn’t he supposed to have spied for them because he believed in their cause and not just the glory? Wasn’t he supposed to have murdered Nie MingJue's men because he wanted to save Nie MingJue's life and not just profit off of having Nie MingJue owe him something like sworn brotherhood to make up for the debt?
And Nie MingJue was murdered to protect the life of a murderer. With Nie MingJue gone and Xiao XingChen away, no one else cared to pay attention.
The Jin Sect broke their promise and good people paid with their lives over it. The watchtowers were a mockery of justice when Jin GuangYao, finally in control as Sect Leader and Chief Cultivator, was the one who set Xue Yang free once more.
And Song Lan lost his eyes, his temple, and his closest companion to that known murderer.
And Xiao XingChen committed suicide over being manipulated by that murderer.
But at one point Xiao XingChen and Nie MingJue stood side-by-side against a blatant evil. An evil that they have receipts for! But just as Wei WuXian on his own was not enough, Xiao XingChen and Nie MingJue as two were not enough. The mystery of Nie MingJue’s decapitated fierce corpse and the horrors found in Yi City, however, are directly connected.
The tragedy of two good men.

hi, can u rec other sbwy fics?
yes i most certainly can!
below under the cut is a selection of very good sbwy (and sgwy) fics, i.e., wangxian fics where wwx experiences compulsory heterosexuality. by no means is it a comprehensive list of all the excellent fics of this genre, because i'm a super slow reader and simply haven't gotten to them all yet, but these are just the ones i've read and enjoyed so far. of course, mind all tags/content warnings etc you know what's up
~ the Straight Boy Wei Ying universe series by raitala | rated E | 36K words total | i know this ask was prompted by my earlier rec of this series but i'll include it here anyway. a very charming wonderful story, with extremely massively hot sex scenes
Sit down next to me | 7K words
Lan Zhan has been in love with his tragically straight best friend Wei Ying forever. So what if some girl says Wei Ying is a bad kisser? Lan Zhan has to prove to Wei Ying that this is incorrect. Because Lan Zhan is a good friend. He out does himself.
If I hadn't seen such riches | 29K words
Sequel to "Sit down next to me" - if you haven't read this all you need to know is that Wei Ying thinks he is straight. He just really likes his best friend Lan Zhan. Who is incidentally a really great kisser. Who also made him come in his pants one time. Who also has a *really* big dick, which Wei Ying sucked one time, but, like, in an experimental way, not in a gay way. They are just really good friends, right? Lan Zhan is the best. Lan Zhan is crying inside.
~ Keep Up by mimilamp | rated E | 27K words | i actually just read this one today and wwhfoohgkhdghihHHHHHHhghhhhhhgh 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥 INSTANT FAVE. MUST READ.
“She was going to kiss me,” Wei Ying says, muffled, into his hands.
Lan Zhan makes sure he keeps his breaths even. “Hm,” he says. Wei Ying looks up at him, wild: a little tipsy, perhaps. Confused, in a panic. His mouth is red like he’s been kissed—he hasn’t. He’s a lip biter, has a habit of picking at his dry lips, the winter sores at the corner of his mouth. It drives Lan Zhan to madness. He dreams of Wei Ying’s puffy mouth, often, sometimes with the real Wei Ying in a sleeping bag on the floor next to his bed. On mornings like those he wakes up in a cloud of embarrassment—hobbling to the bathroom at dawn, running a loud shower to hide the sounds. Wei Ying sleeps on.
“How do I—” Wei Ying starts, stops. He then lets out a single laugh, another. He says: “Oh my god. How do I kiss? Lan Zhan, how do I kiss?”
*
Or: Wei Ying has a girlfriend now. Wei Ying doesn't want his best friend to lag behind.
~ A Brilliant Idea by FrameofMind | rated E | 25K words | good for you wei ying
The one where Wei Ying (straight) and Lan Zhan (gay) make a shared tinder account to save money, because Wei Ying has brilliant ideas.
(Wei Ying has terrible ideas.)
~ worth it for the feeling by occultings | rated E | 8K words | they're both girls in this one! "straight" girl wei ying 🥰
“I’ve never gotten off with another person,” Wei Ying says that night, apropos of nothing.
~ ready to run by detectorist | rated E | 21K words | really really enjoyed the plot and atmosphere and everything in this story
“You should make a Tinder account for campaigning,” Nie Huaisang says.
Wei Ying chokes out, “What?”
“Sounds like an absolutely terrible idea,” Jiang Cheng says flatly.
“No, it’s a great idea!” Nie Huaisang insists. “You just swipe right on everyone and then send them a message about how they should vote for you. You’re hot, Wei Ying! People will definitely match with you and then you can swoop in and hit them with the politics!”
“I don’t even have Tinder,” Wei Ying protests. He’d downloaded the app in first year but had quickly deleted it after a girl responded to his message of wanna get a drink with yeah sure, what time?
“That can be easily fixed,” Nie Huaisang says.
Wei Ying downloads Tinder to help him campaign for his student union election. He gets a little more than he bargained for.
~ drop the game by martyrsdaughter | rated E | 28K words | cheerleader wwx + jock lwj + fake dating + practice kissing + insane sexual tension = me, flattened like a cartoon character after getting run over by a truck
Wei Ying grabs a pen from Lan Zhan’s desk, curling his legs into a lotus pose under the arms of the chair so he can easily spread the journal out across his lap. Even upside down, Lan Zhan can read his large, messy characters scrawled across the top: Lan Zhan + Wei Ying’s Rules for Dating.
Perhaps this was a bad idea.
~ big hands (i know you're the one) by martyrsdaughter | rated E | 8K words | WHOOF 🥵
“Not a big talker, hm?” Wei Ying tilts his head to one side. “That’s okay, I’ve been told I’m a good enough conversationalist for three. My tongue is multi-talented and—”
He has just enough time to feel her palm on the back of his neck and think, oh, her hands are so big, before his words are being stolen into her mouth.

Lan Zhan stands there in his immaculate, cloud-patterned Lan robes, watching him calmly, one fist tucked up against his back. “I am betrothed.”
Wei Wuxian blinks. “Are you…” He tries to laugh. Again, it sounds inhuman. “Is this about last night? Are you mad at me? I only remember some of it, Lan Zhan. I’m sorry if I made you uncomfortable. I’m sure whatever I did I was just—” He gestures uselessly. He remembers being warm in Lan Zhan’s lap. He remembers fitting snugly in Lan Zhan’s lap. Wrapping his arms around Lan Zhan’s neck. Nosing at his jaw. “…playing around.”
“This has nothing to do with you, Wei Wuxian.”

Not really my thing, as like, a mall goth. Oh!” A pleased, chaotic exhale. “My name’s Wei Ying.”
Lan Zhan said, after taking a moment to fully process the last forty-five seconds, “What?”

Lan Zhan takes a breath. His hands are in fists on his thighs. Maybe in the late afternoon. Something quick. Something easy. He'll text his brother first, the short note of when he should be home, so he'll know to track him. He'll be fine, just like he said.

Wei Wuxian locks his phone and puts it down, blinks at his ceiling, and picks it up again. The pictures are still there.
His first thought is that Lan Zhan meant them for someone else. That he just woke up at—he checks the timestamp—6:30 am on a Sunday and decided to go absolute full nuclear seduction option on some poor boy he met on Grindr, who would now be missing out on the best thing to ever happen to him because Wei Wuxian had a bad habit of distracting—of—oh.

Spilled Pearls Extra 2

“Jingyi?” Lan Qiren repeated, looking down at the child tucked into his arms. “A good name.”
“Isn’t it?” Lan Yueheng said, beaming. “A-Xin thought of it!”
“You don’t say,” Lan Qiren said dryly. “Just the way your wife named all the last six?”
Lan Yueheng grinned bashfully. “She’s better at it!”
Lan Qiren shook his head, amused, and tried to offer the child back to his father.
“No, no, you should hold him longer. Babies are calming, and you’ve been having bad dreams recently, right?”
“Babies are not calming,” Lan Qiren said. There was a limit to how many times someone could play the same joke on him, and yes, he was mentally glaring at Wen Ruohan, Lao Nie, and Cangse Sanren as well while he thought that. “You’ve had six already, you should know that. Can we at least agree that this is the last one?”
Lan Yueheng and Zhang Xin had put off having children to help Lan Qiren raise Lan Xichen and then Lan Wangji, once he’d come around, no matter how much Lan Qiren had argued with them to the contrary. They’d laughed him off, saying it was nothing, but he’d been terribly afraid that they’d miss the window for it and end up childless, with no one to sweep their graves on Qingming except his nephews, and that in the end they’d blame him for it.
Naturally, despite his fears, it turned out in the end that they hadn’t had any trouble at all. Their first had been born when Lan Wangji had been three and Lan Xichen six, and they’d had six more after that, one after another like a bunch of maniacs – a girl, two boys, another girl, and then the twins a few years later, at the very end, just when everyone had thought they were already done. Lan Wangji had already been nearly fifteen, then.
Of course, the whole bit about ‘just when everyone had thought they were already done’ being about the twins was rather outdated: that was before the arrival of little Jingyi.
Nearly ten years after all the rest, even the twins; a belated and extremely unexpected child, as if Zhang Xin and Lan Yueheng and the heavens had all conspired to make fun of Lan Qiren for his previous worries. Zhang Xin had already been in her forties, yet she’d gotten through the entire process with a smile and no apparent discomfort, puttering around in her garden and managing her storehouses and scolding her children without any disruption. Not even the pain of labor would bring her down, even if she did have a tendency to mangle Lan Qiren’s hand and shout his ears to deafness in the process.
Lan Qiren’s ears and hand, because he’d helped oversee the births of his nephews – Han Kexin had resolutely refused the aid of any competent doctor, male or female, mockingly reminding him that she was supposed to be in seclusion, so he’d learned up on the basics himself while retaining the option to call in a proper doctor if something went wrong – and since he’d managed it well enough, naturally Zhang Xin wanted the same, impertinent brat that she was. And of course, she wasn’t going to hurt her husband’s precious hands in the process, never mind that he’d been the one to cause it in the first place.
At least they’d all been more or less easy births.
Little Lan Jingyi had been the easiest of the whole lot. Zhang Xin had barely made herself comfortable before he was coming, and before Lan Qiren had even really accepted that he was coming, he was already here.
Look at the rush to get going, as if he’s afraid to miss out on all the fun if he’s not here! Zhang Xin had laughed. He’s going to want to be part of part of everything!
“Last one, I swear!” Lan Yueheng promised cheerfully. “Anyway, we needed one around that age – that way he can be friends with Wangji’s boy! You know, the one he’s raising with Wei Wuxian, the one who used to be Wen sect.”
Lan Qiren snorted. As if he didn’t know the one in question. Wen Ruohan had been altogether too pleased to offer up some of his own blood to join the Lan sect when it turned out that Wei Wuxian had gotten attached to the orphan child of Wen Ruohan’s kinsman – eager as he ever was, really, to entangle himself irrevocably into Lan Qiren’s life, as if he still thought there was a chance, however remote, that Lan Qiren would find some reason to reject him or cut him out of his life once again. And never mind that it’d been years and years since anything like that had even come closer to happening!
“Yueheng-xiong,” he said patiently. “Mathematics are one of your favorite subjects, so I know you know that that means that your son will be friends with my grandnephew.”
Lan Yueheng scratched his nose. “Not your grandnephew yet,” he said, grinning; he didn’t look even remotely ashamed of it. “Wei Wuxian’s the one that adopted him, and Wangji’s not married him yet!”
“He’s working on it.”
Wen Ruohan’s “help” – in the sense of agreeing to let the Lan sect adopt little A-Yuan and not allowing Wei Wuxian to do it on his own – was probably doing more to impede it than anything else.
Lan Yueheng sniggered. “Should I offer to help?”
“Most certainly not. Save your fireworks and flares for the actual marriage.” Lan Qiren rubbed his forehead. “Cangse Sanren is being deliberately obnoxious about negotiations over it, I swear.”
“Cangse Sanren is always obnoxious, Qiren-xiong,” Lan Yueheng reminded him. “Always – and it’s only gotten worse since she had her doom stolen away by Lao Nie.”
“Don’t remind me,” Lan Qiren grumbled. He didn’t even want to know how the two of them had managed to swap fates, or what the consequences of it would be in the end. For some reason, Wen Ruohan seemed oddly insistent about blaming Lao Nie’s second wife, despite her having been perfectly nice as far as Lan Qiren could tell, if somewhat strangely obsessed with food. Possibly he was just annoyed that poor Wen Zhulio had saved Cangse Sanren’s life a dozen times over so far and yet Lao Nie was getting the credit.
At any rate, neither of them had died so far, which was all to the good.
“I’m getting to the point that I think looking for her master and asking her for permission might be the easier course,” he added irritably. “The boys want to get married! What’s the point of tormenting them over the details?”
“Please don’t go out looking for an immortal mountain, Qiren-xiong,” Lan Yueheng said, laughing, and finally condescended to pluck little Lan Jingyi out of his arms. “I’m going to put him to bed. You should rest, too. No more work today! And only good dreams!”
Lan Qiren shook his head and watched him walk away.
For a moment, the image was replaced with another, a remnant from the terrible dream he had been having the past few nights, the one that still lingered: Lan Yueheng, still laughing but walking with a limp, his right foot gone from beneath the knee – the one he’d lost when the Cloud Recesses had burned, and because of the mess that had ensued it hadn’t been treated for far too long, becoming infected; every year thereafter he had gotten sick from a recurrent and worsening illness, driving Lan Qiren and Zhang Xin both crazy with worry.
Lan Qiren’s chest hurt just thinking about it, his own injuries aching, the remnants of the vicious wounds from the terrible beating Wen Xu had ordered with his eyes curved in a mean smile as he watched them try to break Lan Qiren’s meridians out of sheer spite; one day, in that horrible future foretold by the dream, Zhang Xin would worry too much and fail to pay attention, walking on something she shouldn’t and poisoning her blood, and when she went Lan Yueheng would follow her away, the two of them going side-by-side into the next world as they had gone through this one, leaving Lan Qiren to raise their youngest child the rest of the way himself. No matter how tired he was, he wouldn’t put that burden on their other children, all of them abruptly orphaned, the final belated victims of the desperate war against the Wen sect to stop their tyrannical conquest…
Lan Qiren shook his head abruptly, clearing it.
What am I thinking, he wondered. There’s no war against the Wen sect – if da-ge ever got something like a war of conquest into his head, I’d scold him until my face turned blue. Anyway, even if he did do something like that, A-Xu would never dream of ordering someone to beat me! Didn’t I half-raise him and his little brother both, taught them swordsmanship and music and ethics even as Wen Ruohan taught Xichen and Wangji arrays and talismans and how to understand people?
Anyway, A-Xu’s a sweet boy, underneath his superficial arrogance; he knows better than to put on a face like that in front of me…nor is there anything wrong with Lan Yueheng’s foot, or Zhang Xin’s blood, for that matter. Lan Jingyi’s going to grow up in a large family, loud and screeching and thoroughly inappropriate, and unlike my dream his parents will be at the head of the table to oversee the whole thing.
It was just a bad dream.
Lan Qiren shook his head once again.
Maybe Lan Yueheng was right, he reflect. He ought to get some rest – and not just today. After all, he was already half-retired, with Lan Xichen taking over more and more of the tasks of sect leader and excelling in them; Lan Qiren already spent one month out of every three out of the Cloud Recesses, whether wandering around the cultivation world playing his music or visiting with friends and acquaintances, pretending all the while to ignore the Wen sect and Lan sect and Nie sect guards being too busy socializing with each other to remember that they were supposed to be hidden guards.
He could go again now, even. Wen Ruohan had said something about Lao Nie visiting the Nightless City, the grin on his face leaving little question as to how he planned to spend the time with him; by now they should have worn each other out and were probably capable of something resembling human speech.
Yes, he should go visit them, he thought, and realized once again that he was happy – truly happy, not just content. He would go visit them, and complain about the prospect of yet another of Lan Yueheng’s brood running rampage through his classrooms for however long it took to educate them.
It seemed like each one was louder than the next, but at least little Lan Jingyi, whether in a rush or otherwise, and even in conjunction with Wei Wuxian’s little A-Yuan or Jin Zixuan’s little A-Ling, couldn’t possibly be more disruptive than the twins.
That was simply impossible.
Right?

In love with Without Envy!! There's so much happening and I want every bit and piece (but also I am soooo intrigued by 3zun and !! Mingjue is alive!!!! Yes!!! But why and how did he ever agree to go with this plan, does LXC know?! So many questions!)
Also the if lwj was a girl?!?!? It is FANTASTIC!
Thank you. Your writing is giving me life!
Thank you so much!!! :DDDD
Ah yes the 3 zun aspects of it. I always do this - start out with a fluff/feels idea and then inject WAY too much plot into it, and then never end up writing the plot. Sigh it’s a curse of mine. Well...here’s some very short 3zun related Plot™
~~~
*all Without Envy storyboard/snippets are tagged under #without envy*
Nie Huaisang whistled a soft tune as he sprinkled fresh seeds upon the bird feeder hanging off the edge of the eave. In the yard, a shirtless man was making music of the wind as he and his steel saber moved through the space, composing a tune through a series of swift martial forms.
“Looking good, Da’ge!”
Over by the pavilion, a slender man dressed in light grey robes waved a wide bajiao fan over a medicine pot brewing on a small coal brazier, dispersing the hot, boiling steam. With a cool cloth wrapped around the handle, the man carefully poured the pungent content of the pot through a sieve and into a small bowl. The bitter scent of it wafted across the yard and made Nie Huaisang wrinkle his nose, but at least he was not the one who had to drink this foul concoction.
“Da’ge, the medicine is ready.”
At the call, Nie Mingjue pushed through the last of his session, wrapping up with a few low-intensity cool down sequences. There was an air of satisfaction about him when he finally leaned Baxia against the trunk of the tall maple tree. Watching him move with such ease and fluidity, one would be hard pressed to tell that this strongman could not see at all.
Nie Mingjue settled at the stone table and bench under the shade of the maple tree. Nie Huaisang raised a quizzical brow as he watched his brother bent rather unnecessarily at the waist before sitting down. The motion stretched and flexed the rippling muscle of his back, perfectly displaying his excellent form which glistened with sweat under the soft sunlight filtering through the foliage.
Nie Huaisang rolled his eyes. Dage didn’t have to practice his saber with his shirt off; he’d been practicing just fine fully dressed all month. Just because someone was visiting to check up on his health...
“Da’ge,” Meng Yao placed the bowl of medicine on the stone table and guided Nie Mingjue’s hand towards it. “Careful, hot. Do you want some peach honey?”
Lips quirking, Nie Mingjue grunted - “Who am I? Huaisang?” - before finishing his drink in three swallows.
“Hey! I’m still here!” Nie Huaisang shook his fan at his heartless older brother and his husband. Here he was, tending to Dage’s every need every goddamn day, but apparently Meng Yao and his scheming dimples showing up once in a blue moon was enough for Da’ge to take off his shirt and act agreeable. Only Huaisang knew the pain of bribing the stubborn Nie Mingjue with peach honey and sugared apricots just so the man would take his damn medicine.
All Meng Yao had to do was bat his ridiculously long eyelashes and sound forlorn...not that Nie Mingjue could see, per say, but surely he could imagine.
Meng Yao sighed, waving his hand in front of Nie Mingjues eyes experimentally. “Still nothing?”
“Nothing, but I’m starting to get used to it now that I have the rest of my strength back. Huaisang has been very helpful with coming up with strategies for me to get around.” Nie Mingjue reached out and Meng Yao knew the action’s intent at once. Instinctually, he knelt down at the older man’s feet, guided his large palm to the side of his cheek and held it there.
“I’m going to cure you, Da’ge, I promise.”
“Let’s not dwell on it, A-Yao. It’s far more important that I train to fight without sight now that has become my reality.”
But Nie Mingjue’s forgiving words only caused Meng Yao greater distress. “I never intended - had I known... I - I knew the temporary poison I gave you had risks but I thought I would be able to offset it in time -”
“And you would have. You could not have known I would indulge in drink so liberally just prior or that it would interact so insidiously.” Nie Mingjue smoothed back his hair gently, too gentle for a blue-blooded military man, too gentle, thought Meng Yao, than he deserved. “I only wished you had trusted me enough to share your plans with me.”
Once, two years ago when he first awakened, blind and weak and unable to speak, there had been anger. So much anger and despair and betrayal in fact that Nie Mingjue had thought he would drown and die from the utter suffocating thickness of it.
But he had come to understand Meng Yao and his choices, particularly after he had learned of Jin Guangshan’s treachery and the precarious state of Gusu’s future and security. Qishan, now more than ever, loomed in the shadows.
Nie Mingjue pulled Meng Yao to his feet and then sat him shameless across his lap. Across the yard, he could practically feel his little brother’s roll his eyes. “Tell me about the capital. Anything new?”
“Hm, family or politics?”
“Family first.”
“We are uncles now. Luo-shi and Qin-shi both gave birth to healthy boys recently. The elders and Uncle are much relieved now that the future of our nation is secured, so to speak.” Meng Yao never openly disobeyed the Lan Elders, but Nie Mingjue knew he would strangle all of them in their sleep if he could.
“Wangji must be happy.”
“To be honest, I think he wanted daughters.” Meng Yao laughed. “He’s like you, in that way.” “Still no word on who he plans to make his legal spouse?”
“Oh I think we’re a far way from that yet, Da’ge. Jin Guanshan and Jin Ziyan was hoping that securing an heir through Luo Qingyang would put them ahead of the game, but that plan has not succeeded so far.”
“Your father is festering again?” Nie Mingjue was not surprised.
“He’s always festering, like an infection. One day I will burn him out.” Meng Yao’s tone took on a unabashed viciousness. “Things are quiet for now, but judging from his activities, Wen Ruohan is planning something, something big. I think we should start thinking about pushing ahead with our plans.”
Nie Mingjue considered it solemnly, his arm coiling around Meng Yao tighter, and nodded. “Yes. We should.”
Restless Rewatch: The Untamed Episode 15
(Masterpost)(Other Canary Content)
Warning: Spoilers for all 50 episodes!
Tumblr media
This rewatch is going to fit into a single post, because a third of the episode is just crying and yelling on a very slow boat. If you want to learn the Chinese words for “Mother” and “Father” this is your episode.
Captain Blowhard
Clan Leader Yao shows up, having barely survived the massacre of his clan, along with two disciples who aren't too excited about their unwilling promotion to top targets. Jiang Cheng tells his dad that the Wens are systematically exterminating the smaller clans, and have said anyone who helps the survivors is going to be punished.
Tumblr media
Jiang Fengmian tells Yao that the Jiang Clan will protect him. Which is why Wei Wuxian is responsible for the massacre of the Jiang Clan.
Jiang Cheng and Wei Wuxian both think that taking Yao to the Jin clan is the best way to keep him safe. Wei Wuxian was wrong to help the heirs of the powerfullest richest clans, but sure, let's save this asshole.
Road Tripping
Tumblr media
The boys go down to the dock to send Jiang Yanli and Jiang Fengmian off, saying a formal goodbye with a bunch of disciples and showing off how extremely good they look in these close-fitted, simply cut robes with cool belts.
Yu Ziyuan comes down to say goodbye to Yanli and give her some medicine, covering by saying it's for Jiang Fengmian, because being sick is bad for marriage prospects, probably.
Tumblr media
Later the boys will mention their hope that YZY will be mollified by the time JFM returns, which means this possibly isn't the usual state of their relationship. The dislike and jealousy seem to be constant, but perhaps being openly at war with each other is not.
(more after the cut!)
Club Ruohan
At Club Ruohan, Wen Ruohan is tired of sitting on his big uncomfortable throne so he's sitting on the floor next to it, instead. He's suffering the embarrassing problem of black smoke leakage, and needs Wen Qing to give him acupuncture to fix it, but she's not around. Wen Ruohan has an awful lot of trouble containing resentful energy, possibly because he is controlling a bunch of zombies 24x7 instead of letting them take a break. Wei Wuxian is mostly able to control it--except when he, you know, totally isn't--without ever needing an attractive acupuncturist to give him a poke.
Tumblr media
WRH learns from Wen Chao that Wei Wuxian 1. killed a boss-level monster on nightmare level difficulty without his sword 2. took whatever thing had been suppressing the nightmare monster for the previous really long time.  WRH wants whatever it is.
Boys in Charge
When the boys get back to Lotus Pier, Jiang Cheng doesn't understand why they couldn't all go to the Lins together, and Wei Wuxian explains it to him. Wei Wuxian is the one seeing the big picture, and he wants to plan how to handle the Wen forces when they, inevitably, arrive.
Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng would rather talk big than actually plan, showing how--at this age--his anger management problem is an issue on a strategic level, not just a personal one.  As a clan leader he will eventually master this aspect, for the most part, and learn to keep a cool head in regard to martial matters, while continuing to feed his interpersonal rage problem.
The brothers supervise the archery practice of the Jiang disciples, having their last nice time together, and still without a plan. Wei Wuxian is bored and calls practice early so he can go be bored on the porch or in his room, since he isn't allowed out. In fact he's so bored by lockdown that he starts an irreverent niche blog.
Tumblr media
(he’s kidding! keep your mask on, don’t go to wine houses)
Knowing that the Wen Clan is gunning for enemy cultivators, Wei Wuxian and Jiang Cheng send the whole group of disciples, including children, outside the compound walls to retrieve their kites. This is what happens when you don't have a plan.
Wen the Levee Breaks
Wen Chao’s girlfriend Wang Lingjiao finds a kite with a hole in it and uses it as a pretext to snatch up the youngest disciple.
The other disciples come running back and tell WWX and JC what happened. Wei Wuxian calmly gets all of the information from them and starts figuring out what to do, while Jiang Cheng freaks out.
Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng is a good fighter, and matures into an excellent one after a core upgrade and war experience. But Wei Wuxian is a born battle leader, developing strategies on the fly and staying cool under pressure.
Tumblr media
Madame Yu is as brave as a barrel full of bears and Yinzhu and Jinzhu chase lions down the stairs
Yu Ziyuan and the murder twins show up and all of the disciples line up behind them, relieved to have someone scary in charge.. Yu Ziyuan is also a natural leader and an awesome fighter, but her judgement is terrible, as we're about to discover.
Bitchfest
Wang Lingjiao strolls in to the main hall and has the nerve to comment on the interior decorating, because it doesn't have enough rough-hewn black rock and lava pits, apparently.
Tumblr media
She shows them all the kite and says that because it looks (kind of) like the sun, using it for target practice is an attack on the Wen Clan. Bitch, everything your clan wears and uses has fire on it and is red. The sun is not your emblem, no matter what the text says. This kite situation is presumably where the anti-Wen campaign gets its name of "Sunshot," however, which sounds pretty cool.
Wang Lingjiao moves along to her main point, which is that Wei Wuxian needs his ass kicked, and she'd like Yu Ziyuan to do the kicking. To goad her, she starts talking about the rumors about Wei Wuxian's parentage.
Let it Whip
So let it whip (let's whip it, baby) Get a grip (let's whip it baby) Well, what's your trip? (Oh no)
Tumblr media
Yu Ziyuan takes the bait, and proceeds to whip the shit out of her strongest battle asset, in a sequence that's either horrifying or completely fucking awesome, depending on how you feel about whump.
There are a lot of bad effects in this show and a lot of questionable fighting, but any time Zidian flies, I am HERE for it. I gave this beatdown its own gifset over here.
Jiang Cheng is devastated and tries again and again to protect Wei Wuxian, but his mother and her lieutenants keep moving him out of the way so the beating can continue.
Tumblr media
Yu Ziyuan hits Wei Wuxian at least 5 times, until he is totally unable to get up off the floor. Wang Lingjiao has succeeded in eliminating him as a threat for the moment.
Gotta Hand It To You
Wang Lingjiao isn't satisfied with the brutal whipping, however; she wants his right hand as a trophy, and for him to be unable to recover.  Yu Ziyuan tells Jinzhu and Yinzhu to close the doors because some blood is going to fly.
Tumblr media
I'd like to think this is when Yu Ziyuan decides to kill the Wens, rather than maiming WWX, but I'm not certain. Because she doesn't start attacking until after Wang Lingjiao says the Wens are taking Lotus Pier, and tells her to discipline Jiang Cheng. So maybe she is okay with taking WWX’s hand, but draws the line at giving up her house.
Tumblr media
Through all of this, Wei Wuxian doesn't once protest, even when he thinks they're getting ready to take his hand off. He'll do whatever it takes to make peace. THIS is the core of his heroism; he will sacrifice anything to do what he thinks is right. He's not "playing the hero;" not doing this for fame or kudos, but for a clear conscience.
It’s a Murder Party
Wang Lingjiao explains the new Wen World order, and Yu Ziyuan smacks her to the floor and then takes out all 8 of the Wen soldiers in one elegant move.
Tumblr media
Can we talk about how incredibly effective a fighter Yu Ziyuan is, without a sword? With her first-class spiritual tool as her only weapon? Nobody is telling her she needs to carry a sword. She shows she can use one, after she gives Zidian to Jiang Cheng, but she's absolutely devastating without one.
Tumblr media
Having defied Wang Lingjiao, Yu Ziyuan...doesn't kill her. She chokes her, slaps her and yells at her. Then she insults her clan and sticks her FOOT on her FACE.
Tumblr media
She sics the murder twins on the guards in the room, and they shank all of them at super speed while the boys watch with alarm.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then she has them sloooowly advance on Wang Lingjiao, giving her plenty of time to holler for Wen Zhuliu before they can kill her.
Het Heat
Wen Zhuliu comes flying in, literally, kicking both murder twins across the room at the same time. This is followed by Core-Melting Hand x Violet Spider suddenly becoming the most shippable M/F couple in this thing, because wow, they have some serious chemistry.
Tumblr media
I never saw a pretty girl look so tough
Actor Feng Mingjing continues to do an awful lot with almost no lines, in his portrayal of Wen Zhuliu. WZL politely apologizes to Yu Ziyuan. Is he offering to withdraw, or is he just being polite before getting down to the killy bit? Either way, Yu Ziyuan is ready to rumble, and doesn't even consider de-escalating.
You know who was able to rein in his temper, after fighting with this same extremely dangerous dude, and therefore lived to fight another day? Fucking Nie Mingjue, that's who, who has a generational CURSE making him angry. While Yu Ziyuan, is like, "fuck the safety of my clan, this is Wei Wuxian's fault anyway" and throws down.
Tumblr media
Wen Zhuliu and Yu Ziyuan proceed to have an epic, sexy fight, where he catches her whip and she dodges his attempt to feel up her core.
Tumblr media
He's a magic man, mama, he's got the magic hands.
Wei Wuxian, still incapacitated, tells Jiang Cheng to stop Wang Lingjiao from calling for help, but JC gets distracted by the threat to his mom, and goes to engage with Wen Zhuliu.
Tumblr media
Jiang Cheng takes a horrifying smack in the chest, which injures him and takes him out, while Wang Lingjiao sends the signal that seals the fate of Lotus Pier.
It’s All Over Except for the Crying
Yu Ziyuan immediately sees that she's lost the battle, and has the murder twins divert Wen Zhuliu while she brings the two boys to the pier.
Tumblr media
She verifies that Jiang Cheng's core is still intact, showing the viewers, for future reference, that it's possible to tell by touch if someone's core is missing, although a casual touch won't do it.
Then she re-codes the Zidian so that it recognizes Jiang Cheng and puts it on his wrist. She follows this with a display of maternal affection for Jiang Cheng unlike anything we've seen so far, which super fails to reassure him.
Tumblr media
She follows this up with screaming at Wei Wuxian and telling him how much she hates him, and blaming him for the multiple shitty choices she just made..
Tumblr media
With a heart full of rage, she reminds him that his worth lies in what he can do for more important people.
She binds the boys with Zidian and then sends the boat on its way....
Tumblr media
...with a frickin' TALISMAN, holeee shit. As toxic as she is for Wei Wuxian, there is a direct line from her cultivation skills to his.
Dad To The  Rescue...sort of
The last third of the episode is basically yelling and crying punctuated by a couple of interactions out on the water. The extreme emotions go on for long enough that I eventually stop feeling bad for the characters and start feeling bad for the actors, who had to maintain this level of feeling for probably days of shooting.
The boys eventually meet up with Jiang Fengmian and Jiang Yanli. JFM discovers that Zidian responds to his control, which tells him something is very, very wrong, since it probably knows how his wife feels about him.
Tumblr media
This thing isn’t biting me; your mom is in serious trouble.
Here Jiang Fengmian decides to do the heroic, totally futile thing, which is exactly his style. He tosses Jiang Yanli in with the boys and takes his leave so he can go die with his wife while the children survive.
Tumblr media
He has to know that Yu Ziyuan is the stronger fighter of the two of them, and that he's not going back to rescue her. He's just going to stand with her and die together, which is the most romantic thing you can do in a C-drama, after all.
How Much Do You Owe the Jiang Clan?
Jiang Fengmian tells his two children not to cry, making them and the viewer cry extra hard. (specially ouchy gifset here).
Tumblr media
Then he turns to Wei Wuxian and, with a heart full of tenderness, reminds him that his worth lies in what he can do for more important people.
Next episode: Is going to be even more horrible!
Soundtrack: 1. When The Levee Breaks, Led Zeppelin 2. The Tale of Custard the Dragon (poem) by Ogden Nash 3. Let it Whip by the Dazz Band 4. U Got the Look by Prince & Sheena Easton 5. Magic Man by Heart
CQL/MDZS INSP - Gusu Arc Pt2b: Library Pavilion (Pulling Pigtails)
Nie HuaiSang was full of admiration, “He told you to get lost?! Bro Wei, how did you do it?!”
Satisfaction was plastered all over Wei WuXian’s face, “Good thing that I helped him achieve this ‘first’. The self-restraint and etiquette that Second Young Master Lan was praised so strongly for were all weak and useless against me!”
Jiang Cheng scolded, “What is there to be proud of with this?! Do you think that it’s a glorious thing to be told by someone to get lost? You bring so much shame upon our sect!”
Wei WuXian spoke, “I really wanted to apologize to him, but he never paid attention to me, so what’s wrong with me having a little fun with him? Lan Zhan definitely doesn’t understand proper relationships. It’s such a waste of that face of his.”
Jiang Cheng sneered, “Just wait for your death tomorrow! Nobody’s gonna bury your corpse.”
Wei WuXian waved his hands, putting his arm around Jiang Cheng’s shoulders, “Who cares, as long as I tease him first?”
- Mo Dao Zu Shi: Novel, Chapter 15
Longer book except below the cut:
Inside the Library Pavilion, Lan WangJi was recopying ancient books. Wei WuXian thought, I have to sit in front of such a stuffy person for so many hours each day, for a month! Would I even survive?!
Wei WuXian was someone who was skilled at finding fun for himself, especially talented in the area of seeking joy amid dull circumstances. Since there wasn’t anything else to play with, he could only play with Lan WangJi. He called, “Second Master Lan.” Lan WangJi remained motionless. “WangJi!” He appeared as if he didn’t hear anything. “Lan WangJi? Lan Zhan~!” Lan WangJi finally stopped writing, and looked up at him with a cold gaze.
Wei WuXian raised his hands as if he was defending himself, “Don’t look at me like that. I only called your personal name because you didn’t answer when I called you WangJi. If you’re upset, you can also call me by my personal name, Wei Ying!” He asked in a serious tone, “Lan Zhan. Let me ask you a question. Do you really hate me that much?”
Lan WangJi looked down, his lashes casting light shadows onto his jade-like cheeks. Wei WuXian hurriedly added, “Hey, don’t be like this! I want to apologize to you. It was my fault; I shouldn’t have climbed the wall, drank alcohol, and fought with you. But, I swear! It wasn’t that I provoked you on purpose—I really didn’t look at the sect rules.... And, let’s be reasonable—which of us attacked first? It was you! This isn’t all my fault. Lan Zhan. Are you listening?!” He snapped his fingers, “Second Master Lan!”
Lan WangJi didn’t even lift his eyes, “Copy the rules one additional time. You do not feel any remorse.”
Wei WuXian spoke nonchalantly, “I already finished copying, so I won’t be coming tomorrow!” Lan WangJi’s slender fingers seemed to have paused before flipping over the next yellow-tinted page. Wei WuXian crawled up and spoke before him, “‘Pathetic’, right? I just know that you’re gonna say pathetic. Can’t you switch to something else? Or add another word to it?”
Lan WangJi replied coldly, “Extremely pathetic!” Wei WuXian clapped his hands, As Wei WuXian saw that he successfully provoked Lan WangJi, he finally felt relieved.
Lan WangJi tried again and again to put up with him, but he couldn’t do it any more. He thundered, “Get lost!”
Wei WuXian spoke, “Well, well, look at you, Lan Zhan! Everyone says that you’re a gentleman of excellence, a bright pearl in the world, carrying yourself with incomparable courtesy. And, you actually told me to 'get lost’! Getting lost is my best skill!” He fled the Library Pavilion, laughing like a maniac.
MY THOUGHTS
First off, wow with the foreshadowing, Jiang Cheng. Second, I don't know who’s the worse influence: Wei WuXian or Nie HuaiSang!
Third, yes I know I skipped A LOT of content from the Library scene, most notably NHS giving WWX the p*rn book he slipped into LWJ’s books (which caused LWJ to flip out and nearly trash the Library).
There’s a few times I think WWX, as Lan Xixchen describes, is “too excessive“ with his pranks, to the point of callous cruelty, especially considering just how repressed LWJ is.
But I guess WWX knew what he was doing, going to the extreme to get a rise out of LWJ, cuz he does it again later in the Tortoise Cave, shocking LWJ with an impromptu striptease, just to get LWJ to expel backed up poisonous blood. So I guess it works? I just don’t like it though; it’s too close to dubcon. :\
in an attempt to get myself thinking about cql again, i tried combining it with my current other hyperfixation by generating a figure skating au and i’m SCREAMING thinking about this
i’m just going to stream-of-consciousness all of my ideas into this post because these ideas are so good i am going INSANE
- wwx inspired by kostornaia my beloved — strong skating skills base (because of his parents, then after his parents die he goes to jiang fengmians skating school which puts him in competitive contention. ) jumps are decent but a bit all over the place bc coaches don’t prioritise him, incredible performance charisma, endearing personality but undervalued by federation + school
- wwx could do kostotwilight. and he would. the mental image of wwx doing the twilight ending pose has been haunting me ALL DAY. wwx could do harley quinn. he could do new york new york. he could do departure. tell me i’m WRONG
- i don’t have a solid inspo for lwj but he’s DEFINITELY like those male skaters with the THICK thighs and gorgeous knee bend. i’m picturing glittery outfits, lyrical programmes, strong ss. but maybe low on interpretation. anyway he and wwx are rivals for gold whenever they compete. when wwx drops out he’s undeniable gold.
- lxc style inspired by yuna kim. the excellent all-rounder but kind of quiet/detached from it all. retires after 2 olympics and considered undeniable goat but also out of the competitive scene — on that note, nmj as mao asada??? contemporary and rival with yuna kim, less consistent and less perfect technique, but with higher value jumps and keeps going at it for longer
- i pictured a twin jades side-by-side cantilever and almost burst into tears on the street. like lan brothers would defo have strong core focus stunts. cantilevers. spirals. spread eagles. their edges are so deep i am sweating.
- anyway jiang cheng having a sort of sasha trusova/nathan chen ferocity, strong jumper but ALL over the place, skating skills not too strong but it’s something he wants to work on. later in his career his costumes become increasingly sparkly and scary looking
- jiang yanli/jin zixuan as chock/bates, this one had me cracked up ALL morning,,, nepotism babies, jyl as madison chock aka pretty and girlboss but CANNOT skate, jzx the stronger skater but simps for jyl. fans hate them for being overscored but nobody dares to say anything bc all their fave skaters ADORE jyl. diana davis energy tbh.
- yunmeng trio doing sbs axel jumps like yuzu with virtuemoir……..
- SIDENOTE that video of sasha trusova at rusnats jumping up and down and around diana davis before grabbing her for hugs is wwx with lwj.
- ON THAT NOTE, wq/wn as sui/han. just because i need wen ning to lift wwx like evan bates lifted yuzuru hanyu. lwj is seething with jealousy.
- nie huaisang as satoko miyahara. best costumes and performance and pcs but criminally underscored and overlooked. no da-ge i will NOT fix my jumps :)
- wwx and nhs doing kaori and mai’s besties programme…….
- i actually have a whole plot for this already fully formed PLEASE i don’t know what to do with it???? i’m driving myself INSANE
- i don’t know even know if writing it would be worth it because i don’t know if i can convey the pure emotion that comes with WATCHING skating and attaching my affection for these characters TO such a moment
- like bro imagine wwx hitting that long spiral. like. with the lights. the music beats. i don’t know how to explain this i’m HYSTERICAL. i could supply gifs but it would not convey the experience.
- i can’t keep doing this i’ve driven myself insane over this dumb au that i don’t even know what to do with please send help or suggestions
@lady-of-the-lotus I’ve done it. I’ve written, G-d help me, YaoYang fanfiction. I hope you’re happy. I hope you forget about your soup on the burner and it scorches. (Also on AO3 for fancy linked footnotes)
---------
It was a bright and balmy day, the third of the cultivation conference, and Sect Leader Yao was being insufferable. He was well outfitted for it. He had woken from his insufferable, snoring sleep and demanded an insufferable breakfast, the specifications of which made the most highly-ranked, honor-festooned cook in Jin Tower break down into tears and resign on the spot. He put on his most insufferable underpants on under his most insufferable robes, and tied back his hair in the insufferable style that he favored, the one that made him look like a badly turned rotten beet.[2] He had even spent fifty minutes manipulating his face in an insufferable series of facial expressions in the mirror, involving him at several points “losing” his own reflection only to “find” it again at the corner of the polished bronze, much to his own amusement—though not, it might be stated, to the amusement of the junior launderer he demanded watch his performance.
The hall had been surprisingly vacant of other unoccupied servants, when Sect Leader Yao had checked. All that scurrying and burrying! Well, servants should be busy, anyway: that was the way, and the way was right, HRRGNH. “That Was the Way, And The Way Was Right, HRRGNH,” was the latest of the updated mottos Sect Leader Yao had thought of for his sect. Though it was an excellent guiding principal and pure poetry upon the senses, it had two drawbacks. The first was that the tonally-important HRRGNH at the posterior end of the phrase was obtained by means of thrusting the hips forward, curling the torso, and letting the resulting force of air displaced escape through the mouth. This was, Sect Leader Yao allowed, not very dignified.
Still, all was not lost. Sect Leader Jiang had scowled upon seeing it, but he was always scowling so he didn’t count. Sect Leader Lan had looked intrigued. Sect Leader Nie had applauded, and asked whether it would be possible to pass gas from below at the same time; a very tactless comment, Sect Leader Yao had thought, considering the gastrointestinal distress he was so often plagued by, which Sect Leader Nie should know about, as Sect Leader Yao had described it to him at length, frequently. He had reminded Sect Leader Nie of this with appropriate grace. It was good to show these young sprites how to conduct oneself with the proper manners. The second problem was that Sect Leader Yao did not, and had not for several years, have a sect. It was not something Sect Leader Yao liked to think about, so he largely didn't.
On the way to the discussion hall Sect Leader Yao felt a whisper, on the back of his neck. It was the slimiest whisper anyone had ever felt, and it carried with it the vague sense that someone had been watching you, through a crack in the wall, the last time you were alone in the bathroom. It also carried the powerful scent of moldy incense. Sect Leader Yao turned and spread his arms wide. “Sect Leader Ouyang!” It was his best, insufferable, friend. His worst friend, too, being his only, but Sect Leader Ouyang took on both roles with ease. They’d stabbed each other, once, over a hunk of demonic metal. Ah, memories were truly the jewels of life. Sect Leader Ouyang grimaced like a dead cat, which was his version of a pleased smile, and bowed. Sect Leader Yao bowed back. When he rose he waggled his eyebrows. Sect Leader Ouyang snapped open his fan and wafted, with the gentle flutter of a category five hurricane, several lungfuls of moldy incense. They had totally sucked face last night. It had been swag.[3] “What’s on the docket for today?” “I believe it is something to do with that Jin boy. An honor ceremony he’s attempting to put together. If he expects my sect to pay for it, I’ll want to know why.” Sect Leader Ouyang sniffed. He did that a lot. Sect Leader Yao lovingly passed over a handkerchief.
The Jin boy’s proposal was indeed the first major case discussed, after the necessary canapés and complaints about the accommodations had been passed around.[5] It was a matter the boy had clearly put much thought into, and one dear to his heart; he presented it with an earnest timbre that would have swayed a petrified forest. Unfortunately, earnestness was outside of Sect Leader Yao’s testicular-sized sphere of understanding. “He’s grubbing for money, you’ll see,” Sect Leader Yao said, in an overtone[6] to Sect Leader Ouyang. Sect Leader Yao considered himself wise to the ways of the conniving, since he, the aforementioned, sometimes cheated at cards. His friend-now-daring-conquest nodded and glared across the room. He was aiming for the Jin boy, but missed, and caught a rather startled wine-pourer on the side. “You ought to say something,” Sect Leader Ouyang said. That was an excellent idea. It was always, in Sect Leader Yao’s opinion, the right time for him to be talking. “Hey!” he shouted, waving his arms over his head like an extremely drunk aircraft marshal. “Hey! What’s this got to do with Wei Wuxian?” “It…doesn’t,” said the Jin boy, who was in fact Sect Leader Jin, and who while admittedly young outranked Sect Leader Yao to a degree that would make you wince and say whoee it’s a scorcher if you saw it on an outdoor thermometer. “Ridiculous!” Sect Leader Yao said. “We all know it does! Stop trying to bamboozle us with dacquoise!”[7] Sect Leader Jiang had stopped scowling in approval and had begun to scowl in apparent constipation. The history between him and Wei Wuxian was somewhat rocky.[8] “Exactly as he says!” Sect Leader Ouyang, the most and least loyal of Sect Leader Yao’s comrades, cut in. He leapt to his feet; several of his neighbors checked, instinctively, to make sure their pants were still up. “You won’t catch us sleeping!” “Hear, hear!” Sect Leader Yao thundered. “Please don’t shout,” Sect Leader Nie hangovered. He had one hand clasped around his temples, the other clutching a cup of water. Sect Leader Yao was surprised he was so bad off. He’d seemed quite sober when he’d stumbled across the totally swag face-sucking betwixt Sect Leaders Yao and Ouyang. Speaking of. Sect Leader Yao turned to look sideways conspiratorially at Sect Leader Ouyang and shoot him finger-bow-and-arrows.[9] Sect Leader Ouyang mimed catching one. Damn, Sect Leader Yao was for sure going to propose marriage after this Wei Wuxian dacquoise was smoked out.
Oh yeah, it was all comin’ up Yao, baby. That was the way, and the way was right.
HRRGNH.
----------
1This blessing has no relevance to the contents of this work. “Honestly,” the author said when questioned, “I’m just trying for all the help I can get.”[return to text]
2A confusing feat, as this was China prior to the year 1000 BCE, Gregorian, and beets had not been invented yet.[return to text]
3“Swag” is neither a genre- nor period-accurate term for the emotion Sect Leader Yao was feeling. However, translation is an art rather than a science,[4] and more atmospheric words fail to communicate to modern English-speaking audiences the true depth of Sect Leader Yao’s douchebaggery. Thus: swag.[return to text]
4"An art rather than a science” is a common phrase used by people who are neither artists nor scientists to describe what they believe to be the difference between these disciplines. One might as well say “a boot rather than a canary”—that is, not the same, but having more in common than people might think.
5There was nothing wrong with the accommodations, and especially nothing any of the poorly-used common folk the attendees lorded over would have found, but if there is one unifying factor among humans it is that they love to complain.[return to text]
6Like an undertone, but the opposite.[return to text]
7A word Sect Leader Yao thought meant “deceit,” but which in fact refers to a tasty meringue-and-cream French pastry.[return to text]
8If by “somewhat rocky” you mean “a high-speed chase over deadly-fast rapids between simultaneous avalanches, and also, there are sharks.”[return to text]
9Small handheld firearms, aka “guns,” had also not been invented yet.[return to text]
