An Iranian Director Finds His Way Past A Double Censorship
By Philip Shenon Aug. 15, 1990
''Hamoun'' is not a typical Iranian film.
A well-to-do Teheran painter, apparently having an affair with her most important patron, tells her Western-educated psychiatrist that she wants a divorce and complains bitterly about the Iranian Government's treatment of women. Her despondent husband, accused of beating his wife, seeks comfort from his grandmother, and both agree that religion is a fraud.
''Hamoun'' (''The Desert'' in ancient Persian) includes an unusual glimpse of the dark side of Islamic fundamentalism in Iran and deals with issues like adultery, the value of psychiatry and the oppression of women by the Iranian Government. At one point the painter yells out, ''Why don't women have rights in this country?''
And yet, despite what would seem to be the sort of film making that would infuriate Iranian Government censors, ''Hamoun'' is not only being widely shown in Teheran, but it has also emerged as one of the year's most popular films and the winner of six Iranian movie awards.
More than any other recent Iranian film, ''Hamoun'' and its director, Dariush Mehrjui, are demonstrating how far Iranian cinema has come since this nation's Islamic revolution in 1979 and how far it still has to go.
''Compared with Western film makers, we don't have that much freedom,'' said the Teheran-born and American-educated director. But, he added, pulling an American cigarette from a package that can be bought on almost any street corner here, ''I don't think you could have made this film three or four years ago.''
In a nation that appears to revel in the contradictions created when ancient Islamic law is applied to life in the final years of the 20th century, the Iranian film industry presents one of the most astonishing contradictions of all.
The sorts of fundamental questions about social policy, government and religion that might be considered treasonous if raised by any other group of Iranians sometimes find their way onto film.
At the same time, the Islamic censors continue to impose an exacting set of rules about what can and cannot be shown on screen, particularly when it comes to the depiction of Islamic women.
For example, women are never allowed to sing on screen, their hair must always be covered, even when they are supposed to be asleep in bed, and men must never touch them. The censorship code ''can be a great hindrance,'' Mr. Mehrjui said somberly. ''It's too severe.''
Pushing the Limits
Fifty to 60 films are made in Iran each year, and many are the sort of mindless action pictures found anywhere in the world.
But directors like Mr. Mehrjui (pronounced mare-joo-WEE) are pushing the limits of Iranian cinema and getting away with things that would not have been permitted even before the revolution.
Among Mr. Mehrjui's contemporaries is Mohsen Makhmalbaf, whose popular film ''The Bicycle Run'' was seen by critics as an attack on the inequities between rich and poor that the Government tolerates. That the film was supposedly set in Afghanistan may have been Mr. Makhmalbaf's concession to the Iranian censors.
On first impression, Mr. Mehrjui is Hollywood brought to Persia. He is a relaxed, self-deprecating man whose den, with its Scandinavian-style blond wood furniture and its white walls lined with English-language books on the artistry of American films, would fit into a Southern California villa as easily as it does into his airy home in a fashionable neighborhood of northern Teheran.
Fighting for Their Craft
But the similarity between Mr. Mehrjui and the Hollywood directors ends there; Mr. Mehrjui, 50 years old, and his Iranian colleagues have had to fight for their craft in ways that Hollywood directors never have.
During more than 20 years of movie making, Mr. Mehrjui's career has been plagued by censorship, first under the Shah, whose exhibition board preferred syrupy melodramas and refused to show how poor people lived, and now under the Islamic theocrats.
His first major film, ''The Cow'' in 1968, was banned for a year because it dared to portray the gloomy life of a small impoverished Iranian village. Years later, Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini singled the film out for praise after seeing it on television.
In 1973 Mr. Mehrjui made what is perhaps his most acclaimed film, ''The Cycle,'' but it was not shown in Iran until nearly four years later.
''The censors saw it and they had a fit,'' Mr. Mehrjui said of the film, which used the buying and selling of human plasma at a blood bank as a way of depicting urban corruption in Iran.
In and Out of Iran
Not only was the film banned, but so too was Mr. Mehrjui, who was prohibited by the Shah's Government from making feature films in Iran.
He went into exile, packing up and returning to California. When it became apparent that the Shah was falling, Mr. Mehrjui returned to Teheran only to be frustrated again.
His first feature film after returning home, ''The School We Went To,'' in 1980, was financed by a Government education ministry. But after initial screenings, it was banned, perhaps because censors saw a similarity between a central figure in the film - a tyrannical high school principal - and the Islamic clerics who had taken control of the new Government.
''I realized it was the same old story,'' Mr. Mehrjui said. ''Nothing had changed. It is a characteristic of all revolutions: the domination of a single ideology that cannot stand criticism.''
Working With Censors
Despondent, Mr. Mehrjui went to France. Nearly four years later, homesick for Teheran. Mr. Mehrjui began hearing from friends in Iran who said the Government had become less hostile to film makers. He returned to Teheran once more.
What had happened during his exile, he said, was that young film makers had banded together to produce movies as a cooperative and ''to make sense of the chaos'' by working with the Government to determine the ground rules for what was - and what was not - going to be allowed in Iranian films.
The Government, he said, ''is very sensitive to anything they consider immoral: overt love, coquettishness, a showing off of women.''
Those restrictions have caused Mr. Mehrjui few problems, he said. ''I don't go for overt sexuality in my films,'' he said. At the same time the censors indicated they would permit films that touched on some of the themes that the Shah and his censors had disdained, including the plight of the poor and the horrors of war.
The Censors Change
Perhaps most important, the makeup of the Government's censorship boards changed, and some of the more dogmatic Islamic fundamentalists were replaced by officials who were younger, better educated and, at least by comparison with their predecessors, open-minded.
Iranian directors must face two Islamic censorship boards - one for scripts, one for the final film. Mr. Mehrjui, who writes his own scripts, said that because he has a strong sense of what the boards will permit, he has relatively few problems getting his movies onto the screen.
''It has become a close community'' between directors and the Government censors, he said. ''We now know unconsciously what's allowed and what's not allowed.''
That has not eliminated all gray areas, however, and Mr. Mehrjui said that in future films he hopes to push to see if the Islamic Government will allow the exploration of other subjects that were once taboo.
''The hottest issues would be a criticism of Iran in terms of the Iran-Iraq war or showing corruption in part of the Government'' or ''if we showed a mullah who wasn't a good mullah,'' he said. ''I don't know if the Government would tolerate it.''
But he wants to try anyway. Even ''Hamoun'' seems remarkable to many Teheran moviegoers this summer.
''Remember,'' Mr. Mehrjui said, ''just three years ago, you couldn't even show a musician in an Iranian film. And now you can.''
He laughed at the silliness of rules that once decreed that musicians seen on the screen were some sort of devil. For Mr. Mehrjui, the progress of his art may be slow and halting, but at least for now it is progress.

Home Decorating Ideas: Decorating on a Budget
The decorations have come down after Christmas and the rooms are looking rather bare. Winter is often a drab time of year and, even though the promise of Spring is just around the corner, why not liven your January days up by investing in some home decorating? Home decorating ideas do not have to break the bank; there are plenty of ideas that can make an immediate impact on the interior of your home without spending too much money. At the other extreme, however, you could hire an interior decorator and go the whole hog! Whatever you choose, however, there are plenty of home decorating ideas around - from chic and sophisticated to ultra-modern, or the contemporary cottage look with beams and home-crafted cushions. Interior design ideas is a matter of personal preference and depends on the kind of home you have and the lifestyle you live there.
To change the look of a shoestring, alter the positioning of the furniture. If, previously, it was against the walls, pull it all out and reposition it at angles. What about changing the dining room to the lounge and the lounge to the dining room for an immediate change? Even in the smallest houses, there is usually sufficient room to make this change. I did this one weekend a few years ago and it has become an almost annual alteration. My front room runs through into the traditional dining area with a large opened out area in the wall between. This 'opened-out' area was knocked through before I bought the house, and it is neither an open plan nor an appropriate size to be closed off by double doors. It looks what it is - a big square gap in the wall, with a wood surround to finish it off. I have arranged with a local builder to have this altered to a brick-faced archway. It will certainly look a lot better.
If you are on a budget, even painting one wall as a focal point will look cleaner and brighter. There are plenty of inexpensive wall hangings you can buy from companies like IKEA, the Swedish company with many outlets in the UK. Plants will also liven up any home decorating ideas - they come in a multitude of styles and sizes and are readily available from garden centers which often have huge arrays on display. If like me, you keep forgetting to water your plants, you would probably be better advised to place silk plants around your home. Their quality is extremely good and they look remarkably lifelike these days.

Has anyone else noticed how the fucked up economy has affected interior design trends? Or is it just me?
Like, maybe I'm not looking in the right places and I'm just missing new trends because I don't read magazines, but it seems like the economy basically breaking has left interior design at a standstill.
We've been doing contemporary interior design for about 20 years now and I don't see any obvious signs of it going away any time soon. All of the new interior design trends are just new things that fit into contemporary convention. We move from this white stone to that white stone. We switch from white rugs to black rugs. We keep using glass but this time it's round. We change the focus color from red to blue. Like, there may be some changes in trends, but they're all just different branches of the same thing. And I can't help but feel like this is obviously caused by economical fuckery.
In the past, interior design trends have changed dramatically from decade to decade. Even the longer lasting ones didn't stay mainstream for more than 15 years or so (at least from what I know of more recent centuries), because every 10-15 years a new generation of people move out of their parents' home and get their own place.
You know... until now.
Our economy is so fucked up that for the first time in a long time, people are literally incapable of independent living. Millennials who have moved out of their parents' homes moved directly into the arms of the housing crisis in 08. They got a small apartment. They furnished it with hand-me-downs and thrifted furniture that their personal sense of style had absolutely no bearing on. And since then, millennials have been continually doing this song and dance of replacing their broken furniture with the cheapest thing they could find at Walmart (pseudo contemporary, black or white, build-it-yourself flatpacks) or whatever thing from the 70s they could find at Goodwill.
My sibling is a great example of this. They're 35 with 2 kids and a spouse and had never had a new piece of furniture in the entire time they'd lived independently until I bought them a flatpack dresser from Walmart for Christmas, because they didn't have a dresser at all.
The younger millenials in their mid-late 20s and the older gen z either stayed with their parents or went from a college dorm to an apartment crammed with roommates who all brought their handed-down furniture with them.
None of us have the money to actually impact interior style trends. We may have interior design ideas in our heads, but that's where they stay, because we can't pay to make them a reality.
So, only the people with money are able to impact style trends, and who has money? People who are 40+ and have had the same stable job for over a decade. The same people who started the contemporary design trend in the early 2000s. Rich people who are also around that age. Older rich people who are hiring interior designers and architects who are 40-50, in the prime of their (non manual labor) working years, and who love contemporary interior design. They moved out and made a statement and no one has had the money to challenge that design statement since then.
So, instead, we all continue to buy cheap knockoff contemporary furniture, or furniture that's so old and outdated, our grandparents would think it's tacky (That's why they donated it)
And it just makes me so mad.
What beautiful interior design trends would we be coming up with if we all had the money, not only for housing, but for new furnishings and decor for said housing?
I know there are young people with that capability, but not enough of them to make a real wave in the interior design world.
Our interior design legacy is DIY and putting cheap paint on a cabinet from the 70s. Our interior design legacy is eclectic misery. And I'm sad about it.

Emblem Of A Better Germany?
In 2014, at the 14th Venice Architecture Biennial, Alex Lehnerer and Savvas Ciriacidis placed the armoured limousine once used by then Federal Chancellor Helmut Kohl in front of the German Pavilion.
Tumblr media
Read also “The Invisible Church”, “What Fundamentals? Revisiting Treasures in Disguise: The Ominous Ruins of Montenegrin Modernism” and “The Greek Experiment”
It was a black Mercedes-Benz car with its famous star that added the air of a different era, the Federal Republic of Germany before the fall of the Wall, when its capital was Bonn on the Rhine River in West Germany, and not Berlin. Placed before the steps of the monumental façade of the German pavilion, once build as the Bavarian pavilion and then decisively altered by Nazi Germany in 1938, every German visitor would read this car as a sign, an emblem of what came to be known as “Made in Germany”, high quality cars, machines, and other industrial goods that were seen as responsible for the so-called “Wirtschaftswunder” (economic miracle) after WWII, the economic rebuilding of West Germany.
Tumblr media
On the one hand, this car is a desirable object, vintage and expensive. In my family, you knew you had made it when you could afford a Mercedes-Benz. You could tell, when my parents bought their first Mercedes-Benz, they were full of pride. And they still drive the same car and feel the same way about it, although now it’s a rather old car.
Tumblr media
On the other hand, you could also read the continuities of 20th century German history into this juxtaposition of car and pavilion. Because what is the link between the Nazi façade and the later car? You might answer this question with the seamless integration of Nazis in German politics and business and the financial gains of many German companies (including Daimler-Benz) during the Nazi period thanks to forced labor, expropriation, and simple opportunism. The juxtaposition places you, at least as a German, between guilt and pride, haunting memories and desire.
Adjacent to the left of the big front door of the German pavilion in Venice, the visitor was greeted by an elegant section of a roof jutting out above a much smaller door. It was a hint that the interior of the pavilion was taken over by another structure, a partial replica of the former Chancellor’s residence in the former capital of the country formerly known as West Germany. A somewhat nostalgic remnant of a bygone past, a country and political system that were fundamentally altered by the fall of the Berlin Wall and the reunification of Germany. It was the Germany I was born into, with Bonn being the capital until 1999 and the Chancellor’s residence – or Kanzlerbungalow (‘Chancellor’s bungalow’) – constantly in the news. As much as it was nostalgic, Lehnerer and Ciriacidis’ pavilion had an uncanny feeling to it. Inside and outside were suddenly called into question, different times collapsed into each other, with the democratic bungalow inserted into the Nazi pavilion. Or was the story told more complex than that, as with the car parked in front of the pavilion? The story was, for sure, one about architectural representation.
Tumblr media
The Chancellor’s bungalow was built in 1964 by the architect Sep Ruf for Ludwig Erhard, the second Chancellor of West Germany. Erhard was the German politician who stood like no other for the ‘economic miracle’ of West Germany after WWII. As the Federal Minister of Economic Affairs under Chancellor Konrad Adenauer from 1949 until 1963, when he became Chancellor himself for three rather unlucky years, he promoted what he termed the social market economy and gained widespread popularity with this economic concept. Although Erhard worked for the German state as an economist during the war, he rejected Nazism and was in contact with members of German resistance groups. It seems fitting therefore that as Chancellor he hired the fellow Bavarian Sep Ruf to design the new Chancellors residence in Bonn. Ruf was known for his functional designs in the tradition of the Bauhaus and older modern architects, who had mostly emigrated during the 1930s, like Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Ruf’s elegant bungalow in Bonn payed homage to designs of the Bauhaus and Mies in particular. The latter’s Barcelona Pavilion, the German Pavilion at the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona, has often been mentioned as a reference.
Tumblr media
Dining room of the bungalow of the Chancellor in Bonn.
By 1964, Ruf had already worked for the federal government several times. Together with another modernist architect of the postwar period, Egon Eiermann, he had for example built the German pavilion for the world fair in Brussels in 1958. He was, thus, well informed about West Germany’s representational needs. The Chancellor’s bungalow spoke not only of the Bauhaus and the better, modern Germany that was supposed to be represented by buildings in its tradition like those of Ruf, Eiermann and others, but it also established a clear link to modern architecture internationally. Looking at the bungalow, some might be reminded of the famous Case Study Houses at the West Coast of the USA. After all, it was the declared aim of West German politicians to make the Federal Republic part of the Western political sphere (‘Westbindung’, or policy of the alignment with the West). I would guess that these two aspects, the tradition of a better, modern Germany and the alignment with the West, were first and foremost represented by Ruf’s bungalow in Bonn.
Tumblr media
The second Chancellor of Germany, Ludwig Erhard.
The third Chancellor, Kurt Georg Kiesinger, took over from Ludwig Erhard in 1966. He was a former member of the NSDAP and disliked the Chancellor’s bungalow for its functional, ‘cold’ design. He had many things altered before he moved in and brought with him antique furniture pieces in stark contrast with Ruf’s modern architecture. Most of the other Chancellor’s after him agreed with Kiesinger’s view on their official residence. They were looking for something more comfortable and cosy (gemütlich). Under Chancellor Helmut Kohl the interiors had changed so fundamentally that it was hard to still see Ruf’s designs behind thick layers of carpet and bulky sofas and chairs. Not to speak of the new 1980s glittery lighting. Although partly preserved in the original building in Bonn, these alterations, additions and layers were not present in Venice.
Tumblr media
Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II and the ex-Chancellor of Germany Helmut Kohl front of the bungalow of the Chancellor in Bonn.
It was a clearer picture or juxtaposition that Lehnerer and Ciriacidis drew. Only the brief blaze of fire in the Chancellor’s fireplace could have been something of a reminiscence to the other, the not-so-modern, not-so-open, cosy Germany that gathered around home-and-hearth. The Germany I grew up in. Just like the Mercedes-Benz, a fireplace was something quite desirable for the generation of my parents. You had to have one. And now, decades later, my parents even installed a new one. As if you couldn’t or wouldn’t want to live without it. Herman Miller’s Eames Collection that Erhard chose for his initial version of the bungalow at the River Rhine might have always been too expensive for most Germans, but they also represented a certain idea of Germany, like the whole bungalow an internationally oriented, better Germany – and not necessarily the real one. I wonder, does the real, and not the ideal, ever get represented? It might be an interesting task for a future German pavilion at the VAB.
Tumblr media
The bungalow of the Chancellor in Bonn.
West Germany claimed the Bauhaus as its heritage since the 1950s, through the founding of the Bauhaus-Archiv in Darmstadt in 1960, countless exhibitions and books and buildings seemingly in its tradition (there were similar efforts in the GDR a little later). 2019, the year of the centenary of its founding, saw the Bauhaus at the height of its representational instrumentalization, it had become a major part of German cultural diplomacy. Yet, the Bauhaus has oscillated between national claims and International Style even before it was closed by the Nazis. This oscillating reception of the Bauhaus was crucial in making sure that the Bauhaus would continue to be productive until today. Looking back in 2020, the German Pavilion at the 14th VAB is also a vivid illustration of the complicated history of the Bauhaus and Germany.

A Guide to Medieval Childhood
Our popular imaginings and depictions of medieval childhood tend to be somehow both scarce and bleak. It’s often supposed that childhood as a category didn’t really exist until the twentieth century, and that even the highborn children before that blessed time were regarded as basically inconvenient mini-adults until they were old enough to fight or marry, respectively.
The sources we have tend to favour the royal families and the high aristocracy with some wealthy merchants thrown in the mix, so, unfortunately, the information below would mostly be concerned with these groups - although I’m going to do my best to include some facts about the lives of children from lower social strata, too.
Tumblr media
Infantia, or infancy
As Maria von Trapp used to sing in technicolor meadows, let’s start at the very beginning - it is, after all, a very good place to start.
A mother rarely gave birth unattended - and I’m not talking about medical professionals; more often than not, these would be represented by a sole midwife. However, having a close friend or a relative with you as you are waiting for the baby to arrive was a practice well-established by the early fourteenth century even among royal women, whose births, marriages and deaths alike were always ruled by strict ceremony.
In their case, as in the case of all great families of the land, the practice also had a purely pragmatic side - additional companions mean additional witnesses who would be able to swear, should a scandal arise, that the little heir really arrived in the lawful way and had not been, say, smuggled into the bedroom in a pan. (In the case of the British royal family this precaution eventually led to the Home Secretary being obliged to attend all royal births, and was only done away with in 1930, when the late Princess Margaret was born).
Of course, for all the companionable support, the birth was not without its risks - for the child even more so than for the mother. It was for that reason that, uniquely, the Church allowed the midwives to baptize newborn - or unborn - babies in case they don’t survive by the time the sacrament in question could be performed properly by a priest.
If everything went well, it was the time to prepare the child for an ‘official’ baptism in the local church, which was going to not only save his soul for the world to come, but to help his standing in this one - after all, being baptized in a particular church meant being integrated into the larger community of the parish. The mother could rest - she was not required to attend the christening (or, rather, she couldn’t, as she would only be able to enter a place of worship again after being purified via a brief ‘churching’ ceremony on the fortieth day after giving birth). The child’s godparents would have been there to stand in her stead.
In fact, many contemporaries considered that a woman needs at least a month to properly recover after birth. Nor was it supposed to be a time of solitude - receiving female visitors was both allowed and encouraged.
Tumblr media
Meanwhile, the child would be transferred into the care of a wet-nurse. Breastfeeding your baby yourself usually signified that you simply cannot afford wet-nurse of good character. The good character part of the job description concerned itself both with the purely physical characteristics - the wet-nurse had to be a little below thirty, to have white teeth, sweet breath, and a child of her own not above eight months of age, otherwise her milk could be considered stale - and the moral ones. It was believed that virtues and vices both could be transmitted through milk, and thus it was imperative to choose a wet-nurse both sensible and respectable.
Once hired, she rarely left the baby’s side - contemporary writers acknowledged that leaving an infant to cry is harmful for the child’s health, both mental and physical, and therefore a nurse should always be at hand with either her breast or a lullaby. In the highest households of the land, such as that of the royal children of Henry VII and Elizabeth of York, one or two women were also employed as specifically the child’s rockers, tasked with, well, rocking their little charge to sleep - though not too quickly or too harshly, ‘for fear of making the milk float in [her] stomach’.
Every medieval baby, regardless of his family’s income, was swaddled from birth and until he was about eight or nine months of age: not only would he be kept warm, the parents judged, but it’s also going to help his limbs grow straight. A ‘breechcloth’ – essentially, a premodern nappy - was a piece of easily-washable linen, doubled over and then fastened into place with pins. Then a linen shirt would be gently placed over the infant’s body, after which the swaddling bands proper – sometimes three yards long – would come out. They were long, narrow pieces of – you guessed it - linen.
This swaddling part was universal for everyone; however, even here, before the child could partake in any fashion proper, the class divides came out to play. Babies from wealthier families could sport crimson mantles and bands decorated with gold embroidery (sometimes coordinated with that on their mothers’ outfits, like on the famous Cholmondeley Ladies painting at the top of this post).
Another – perhaps, more familiar to us – sphere of baby-related conspicuous consumption was the cradle. When, in 1494, the son of Beatrice d’Este and Ludovico Sforza was born in Milan, the proud father presented his guests a four-poster cradle covered in white satin, where the little heir now lay. When Lucrezia Borgia gave the d’Este family an heir, she splashed out on the cradle for the little Ercole even more. According to contemporary witnesses, the cradle was located under tent-like Moorish-style silk draperies done in the Este colors. It was on a platform encased in a great carved and gilded canopy, six feet long and five feet wide. The cradle proper was curtained in white satin, with the sleeping baby covered with cloth-of-gold.

The weaning tended to come, by our standards, rather late: some contemporary arguments recommended three years for boys and two years for girls (the former, after all, were expected to lead more active lives, and thus needed their mother’s nutritious milk more). Even then, hard food was to be introduced gradually – starting, for instance, with a chicken leg the child could chew on.
Once out of swaddling, the boys were dressed in smocks, and the girls in gowns – not that there was much visual difference between the two, mind. Regardless of their parents’ social standing, they all also wore tight linen caps that bore the charmingly hobbit-y name of biggins.
Naturally, the higher one stood upon the social scale, the more ornamental these gowns and smocks tended to be. The toddler Princess Elizabeth, who was the daughter of Henry VII and thus the aunt of her much more famous namesake, was dressed on separate occasions in a green velvet gown edged with purple tinsel and lined with black buckram, a dress of black velvet edged with crimson, or a kirtle of tawny damask and black satin. Admittedly, these were mostly for ceremonial occasions, and in the privacy of her yellow ochre-coloured chambers even the princess probably tended to wear something more comfortable. In winter, she was kept warm with furred robes fastened with silver buttons and caps trimmed with peacock feathers, and, regardless of the time of the year, indulged with sweets made from sugars flavoured with rose and violet, as well as with fruits from sunnier climes like pomegranates, quinces, and almonds.
Royal families were never noted for modesty of consumption in any era, but even the middling merchants of Florence were often criticized for spoiling their children with fine clothes. Fra Dominici wrote scathingly about parents who dress their children in ‘fancy garments, stamped shoes, short waist-coats, tight and fine-knit hose’. Neither did he approve of toys like “little wooden horses, attractive cymbals, imitation birds, [and] gilded drums,” recommending instead more virtuous playthings like “a little altar or two, … little vestments … little candles … [and] little bells,”, so that the children could pretend they were acolytes or priests. Three guesses no prizes as to which category ended up being the more popular one.
Some types of toys would have been surprisingly familiar to us – for example, doll furniture. In Germany one could find whole doll kitchens with dishes, meat plates, cutlery and furniture since the 1550s at the latest. Wealthier girls were also bought so-called fashion dolls that showcased, you guessed it, the latest fashions in the land.
Of course, poorer children had to make do with dolls stuffed with straw, and play with such props as animal knucklebones or wooden wheels.  However, it doesn’t mean that their lives were completely devoid of fun. Contemporary paintings, such as Peter Brueghel’ Children’s Games (1560), show children playing blind man’s bluff, ‘paper, scissors, stone’, roll hoops and rock barrels.

Pueritia, or childhood
A child’s education started with learning his (or, rarer, her) letters. A rather charming contemporary advice recommends the parents to do it by carving each letter on a piece of fruit, and reward the child with the fruit in question if the letter is correctly identified. These kinds of basics could be learned at home (though, if you decided to choose the method above, better do it specifically in the kitchen) – however, once the rudimentary parts were done with, the paths of learning could branch wildly.
The wealthiest families hired tutors for their children, and these posts, prestigious and coveted as they were, could sometimes become subjects of competition. For example, when the future Elizabeth I grew old enough for her first lessons, it was assumed that these are going to be provided by her aunt and godmother, Lady Troy. However, the less highborn, but more ambitious Katherine Champernowne had other ideas; Henry VIII ended up being impressed by reports of her as a woman of good education, and appointed her to be his daughter’s governess in 1536. She held that post until 1544, when her precocious charge overgrew the standard highborn lady’s curriculum that consisted of reading, embroidery, music, riding, falconry, and chess. After that, the scholar William Grindal became the princess’ tutor, introducing her to classical authors such as Plato.
Latin and, to a lesser extent, Greek literature was not exclusively the preserve of the upper-class education. The cathedral school of St. Paul’s, for instance, taught children from middling walks of life - such as one Geoffrey Chaucer, the son of a wine merchant - and placed a great emphasis on the learning of Latin. The recitation of the Latin alphabet started with the sign of the cross and ended with ‘Amen’: quite a sign of respect, coming from a religious institution. The school’s library was full of books on logic, law and medicine, as well as such still-popular classical hits as Aesop’s Fables.
The boys (unlike in the more flexible world of private education, school pupils were invariably male) also owned some books of their own: contrary to a common misconception, even before the invention of printing press books were not necessarily objects of luxury. For example, when in 1337 John Cobbledick left twenty-nine books to Oriel College, each of them was priced at about 6 shillings. Two centuries later, when William Chatsworth sent his beloved wife Bess of Hardwick gifts during his sojourn in London, he included some learning materials for their children: three French grammars, a copy of Cosmografie de Levant, and psalms in French.
Charitable institutions could sometimes take care of the education of poorer children: for instance, in 1542, the Alderman William Dauntsey of London directed in his will that his executors should build a charity school of eight chambers (one of them for the schoolmaster) in West Lavington, Wiltshire.
Boys who could boast some musical talent had an unusual route for both education and promotion: chapel choirs. Many noblemen - and noblewomen such as Margaret Beaufort, the mother of Henry VII - engaged in cultural patronage, supporting at times dozens of choristers. Margaret herself had hired a composer, Robert Cooper, who was entrusted with finding gifted boys for her chapel from ‘London, Wynesore and in the west country'. She also made sure that, apart from musical education, the boys in her choir received tuition in Latin: in January 1506 the same Cooper was responsible for purchasing five 'gramer bokes ... for the chyldryn of the chapell', costing 4s 3d. Their education ensured that, after growing out of their roles in the choir, the boys would be able to continue academic studies. One Thomas Freston left Margaret’s chapel at the age of 13 to attend Winchester College, while the 1460 statute of Tattershall College specified provision for ‘four poor boys’ who were 'teachable in song and reading, to help the choristers, each of whom is to have commons and clothing and all else that the choristers do'.
Girls could be educated in convent schools; some, though by no means all, later chose to enter these nunneries as actual novices (they couldn’t legally make such a decision until the age of twelve, however, just as they couldn’t legally consent to marriage). Within the convent walls, as outside them, their comforts depended a lot on their parents’ standing - if their entry fee was generous enough, the girls, whether they came as pupils or little novices, could count on having a bedroom to themselves, a generous provision of wood to burn in their fireplace, and rare foodstuffs for their tables. When Edward I’s daughter Mary entered the convent of Amesbury as a novice in 1285, at unusual (and frankly illegal) age of seven, her lifelong allowance included an annual provision of twenty tuns of wine from the Bordeaux claret merchants and forty oaks as kindling for her fireplace.
Convents were supposed to foster the life of prayer and quiet contemplation, which was even harder to get used to for her teenage novices than it were for the secular boarders, who weren’t,  after all, handled as strictly. However, even in a nunnery, there was a certain softening of the rules when it came to young girls. For example, at the Feast of St Nicholas, the patron saint of children, the youngest novice was named the Girl Abbess and allowed to lead the community in dancing and revelry.
Adolescentia, or adolescence
This stage of life was thought to start at about fourteen and end in one’s early twenties. Highborn children of both sexes were usually sent to foster at the homes of friends or relatives of equal standing, both to finish their education and to establish useful connections. When the teenage Jan of Brabant was sent for foster at the English court, he devoted his years there to perfecting the arts of jousting and hunting with falcons, as well as the less official, but nonetheless useful skills of party planning, people-charming, and careful gambling. His future bride Margaret of England, meanwhile, was improving on her feminine arts of weaving and embroidery, often spending substantial sums on gold thread and silks of different colours.
The machinery of altar diplomacy was already in full swing by the time they reached that age, even though marriage proper - with the consummation implied - was usually still a few years in the future. The fate of Margaret Beaufort, who gave birth to her first husband’s son at age thirteen, was considered grotesque and frankly unsafe; after all, it’s no coincidence that she could have no children after. For instance, Thomas Aquinas cautioned in his Mirror for Princes that consummation should be delayed until the woman had reached the age of eighteen, and the man twenty-one.
The complicated diplomatic and legal negotiation process behind such agreements was left to the heads of the families and their respective employees, without the involvement of the betrothed ones themselves. After all, it included such charming tasks as drawing a complete summary of all villages, farms, rents, forests, and windmills belonging to the future groom’s family which would be able to provide the income for the bride’s dower, or widow portion, in case she outlives him - a pretty significant possibility, considering.
Lower down the social scale, marriage arrangements were not so pressing a concern - urban artisans, male or female, often married only in their mid-twenties. When their children reached adolescence, they usually worried about arranging an apprenticeship for them rather than a betrothal.
A child could be apprenticed to a master who practiced one of the trades regulated by the guilds of the town. These included mercers, grocers, fishmongers, drapers, tailors and even artists. The training usually took seven years, during which the master in question was obliged not only to educate the apprentice, but also to feed and clothe them and generally treat them like a member of their family (which usually also meant having them help around the house). This way, the future artisans spent their adolescence in a situation of indenture and completed their training in their early twenties. The ultimate dream after that was becoming a master in their own right and acquiring one’s own workshop; but, like people in their early twenties everywhere, most were too broke for that, and ended up working as journeymen in their master’s workshop for some more years - or sometimes for the rest of their lives.
Although the most prestigious trades, such as those of mercers or goldsmiths, only admitted men, others - the tailors, the bakers, the printers, the bakers, sometimes the painters - were open to apprentices of both sexes. Female artisans often ended up marrying their colleagues from the same guilds, and then keeping workshop together, but sometimes they kept their trade and conducted their business separately.
At this point, gaining the trappings of trade and marriage, they progressed into the adulthood, and thus beyond the scope of this post.

New York Times: The Dollhouses of Instagram
'Instagram-inspired enthusiasts are making their interior-design dreams real — only 12 times smaller.
Tumblr media
(Image: Trisha Krauss)
By Ronda Kaysen, March 13, 2020
'The kitchen that Jessica Coffee designed checked all the trendy boxes: white Shaker cabinets, a subway-tile backsplash, wide oak-plank floors and an open-concept floor plan, with views into the living room’s shiplap walls. The photographs she posted on her Instagram page evoked enthusiastic comments from followers, who gushed about high-end details like the water filler above the stove.
The only drawback? Ms. Coffee, 40, can’t actually serve a meal in her kitchen, at least not a real one, because the room, like the rest of the house, is built to a 1:12 scale — that 36-inch chef’s stove is actually three inches long. It’s in a dollhouse that sits in the real-life master bedroom of her home in Walla Walla, Wash., which looks nothing like her amazing tiny one.
“People are always like, ‘Ooh! I would like to see your real house.’ No you wouldn’t. I live in a house that is barely 1,000 square feet with three kids and a Great Dane,” said Ms. Coffee, who sells her miniature designs and posts online tutorials at Jessica Cloe Miniatures. “My dollhouse square footage is much better than my actual square footage.”
Tumblr media
'Ms. Coffee is among a growing community of artisans who have turned the craft of dollhouse making into an exercise in aspirational home design on an itty-bitty scale, with their tiny rooms and furnishings displayed on well-curated Instagram accounts with glossy photographs and videos set to music reminiscent of “The Fixer Upper” on HGTV. Scroll too quickly, or miss the photograph with a human-scale hand surreally poking into the scene, and a viewer might confuse the image for a real-life one, the type of image that leaves you feeling equally amazed by and envious of the enormous kitchen island with a soapstone countertop.
These dollhouse makers and collectors say we’ve entered a miniature Renaissance. Call it a Mini-Aissance. “We’re living in it now,” said Kate Esme Ünver, who curates miniatures on her Instagram page Dailymini, and is the author of the 2019 book “The Book of Mini: Inside the Big World of Tiny Things.”
Social media has turned what was once a niche hobby into a decidedly trendy and increasingly profitable business, making it easier for artisans to find each other and potential customers online. The Instagram hashtag #dollhouse has 1.65 million posts and #miniature has almost 4.3 million, a mix of posts from people making miniatures and those sharing what they’ve found. Victorian-era lace and antique armoires are being scrapped for midcentury modern chairs, fiddle-leaf fig plants and sputnik chandeliers. House Beautiful took notice and commissioned 11 interior designers to reimagine a Victorian dollhouse in their own style, auctioning the decidedly contemporary finished products at the New York Design Center on Feb. 27.
In the past six months, searches on Etsy for 1:12 scale furniture were up 39 percent and searches for dollhouse rugs and miniature items were up 20 percent from the same period a year ago. A search on the site for dollhouses yields 237,000 results. “It’s certainly a trend that’s rising,” said Dayna Isom Johnson, an Etsy trend expert. The popular items — miniature succulents, bath salts, word art — point to an interest from the grown-ups, not their children. “Maybe there are very sophisticated 10-year-olds out there who want a midcentury sofa, but I assume these are adults who want to take this on as a new hobby.”
Chris Toledo, 34, who showcases his diminutive creations on the Instagram account I Build Small Things, has watched his business soar in the past two years thanks to social media. He now sells his dollhouses, designed in a nod to the 1920s architecture of Los Angeles, where he lives, for $150,000 to $200,000 apiece.
“Before, miniatures were only publicized through miniature magazines,” he said. “Social media put it in everybody’s face.” His homes feature intricately detailed rooms, like a kitchen with a subway-tile backsplash and a schoolhouse pendant light that would look real if it weren’t for the life-size head of garlic positioned in the middle of the room.
Tumblr media
'While some artisans specialize in furnishings and décor, Mr. Toledo focuses on the architecture, selling complete dollhouses as well as individual rooms — like a bathroom in a shadow box — for as much as $20,000. He designs the rooms by hand, milling moldings and using miniature tools, like a table saw the size of a shoe box, for carpentry work.
The advent of 3-D printers has opened the door for people without such advanced woodworking skills, too — to the disappointment of traditional dollhouse makers, who view such technology as taboo. Ms. Coffee of Walla Walla, for example, uses a 3-D printer to make smaller objects, like decorative pumpkins, which she sells for $5. She makes other items, such as throw pillows, using everyday materials and tools like glue, fabric, tweezers and quilt batting.
A year into her craft, Ms. Coffee now sells enough printable herringbone floors and cowhide rugs on her website to turn a profit, although still not enough to give up her day job as a graphic designer. She also uses the dollhouses to work out design challenges in the real-life houses that she and her husband renovate and flip. If she’s not sure about a floor color or a pattern for a rug, she can try it out on a tiny scale for a few dollars. Her actual home has the same rustic wide-plank flooring as her dollhouses.
While miniatures have long had their enthusiasts, this new generation of dollhouse makers is turning to idealized contemporary homes at a time when the real-life version is increasingly out of reach for many Americans. High real estate prices and stagnating wages make it difficult for many homeowners to consider a $100,000 kitchen with a farmhouse sink and a Wolf stove. But you could have a very little one — or three of them, and fill them with teensy espresso makers, cheese boards and bottles of Dom Pérignon. Like the idea of a barn door, but don’t actually have a place to install one? Tuck it into the dollhouse attic, and if it grows tiresome, refurnish the entire room with rattan chairs, a shag rug and a soft pink palette.
Tumblr media
'Kwandaa Roberts, an OB-GYN in Philadelphia, says she has found a following on her Instagram account, Tiny House Calls, among millennial women who pine for a prettier house. “They don’t have any money and a lot of them can’t afford to buy houses and they’re living at home with their parents or in a tiny apartment with roommates and they can’t do design and all the things that they want to do,” she said. “But like me, they can get a lot of their creative energy out on a dollhouse.”
Dr. Roberts, 47, a single mother of two, started her hobby two years ago when she bought a dollhouse at Target. She intended to give it to her daughter, now 5, but instead found that it filled a creative longing she had to be an interior designer. She painted it, added wallpaper, and details like a brass soaking tub and a kitchen with a waterfall countertop. She made furniture by hand with supplies she bought at Michaels. “I’ve always loved interior design, had a huge passion for it, and may have gone into it as a career had I known that was a thing,” she said. But when she was growing up, “there was no HGTV. Home Depot sold lumber; it was not what it is today.”
In her tiny houses, Dr. Roberts has found an outlet, and an opportunity to reveal her projects on videos and photos she shares with her 47,000 followers. “I don’t have to redo my house,” she said. Instead, “I can have 10,000 kitchens and they will be fantastic.”...'

WOODSTOCK’S (SUGARPLUM) DREAM
by Réginald-Jérôme de Mans
To quote the great Takeshi Kaga, “If memory serves me right, Christmas is just around the corner.” And with it, a tightening of the tension between cocooned self-indulgence and the ethereally transcendent. In the cold and isolated straits of our current time, it’s easier than ever to hearken to an iGent seasonal anthem, Gabriel Yared’s eerie reworking of “Silent Night” that plays as The Talented Mr. Ripley’s title character celebrates his first Christmas as someone else, doing what he thinks rich people do: sipping champagne in front of a roaring fire, carefully unwrapping exquisite presents to himself. Were he real and contemporary, no doubt he would quickly gain influencer style points by taking a photo of the entire over-the-top ensemble.
The key themes seeping from the “Silent Night” sequence are: self-spoiling; insulation (made physical with the comfy bourgeois furniture Ripley surrounds himself as what he thinks are the furnishings of the upper class) as well as isolation from any judgmental second (let alone third) parties; and delusion. Many delusions: that a well-indulged self is sufficient; that taste and heavy comfort are what’s posh; that transcendence, in short, can be found in the heavily expensive and material.
Their complete refutation is found in a cartoon. And why not? Generation X found its idiom in cartoons and other indicia of pop culture. Thanks to Reagan-era deregulation, many of them were incredibly irresponsible animated toy commercials, when they weren’t just frankly insane. However, the demands of pre-streaming, pre-on-demand viewing meant that millions of undiscriminating children across the country shared a common experience, however deranged, at the same time every day.
Something similar happened at the holidays, when animated specials ensured that children of all creeds received a general exposure to the holidays of one faith. Some of those specials had been and still are repeated over and over every season so that the names behind them, and their esthetics, went through stages of being embarrassingly old-fashioned and clichéd, to forgotten, to now, at many years’ distance, charming.
One special in particular probably seeded the messaging of all that followed, even if none quite have come close: A Charlie Brown Christmas. Today, it seems strangely preachy and, with its lots full of metallic and gaudily colored artificial Christmas trees (the better to contrast with Charlie Brown’s tiny real tre), both kitschy and kicky. It was already several decades old when we 1980s kids were watching it; today it’s still shown, even if it’s on networks and platforms that didn’t exist back then, so remains a common reference among generations.
It’s the sort of reference that doesn’t come up until you have kids of your own who watch the special. The music that carried the special, creating so much of its wistful, thoughtful atmosphere, became relevant to me again at other points in my life, particularly when I found it and its composer, Vince Guaraldi, referenced in the liner notes to Saint Etienne’s Continental, which had been a favorite import CD (dating myself even more than my explicit Gen X references). I bought it at an isolated time when I had to save up for even the tiniest purchase, reading and rereading the least scrap of content, including those liner notes that described the nostalgic, bittersweet charm of Guaraldi’s music and its Panamax-worth of freight. Among an amazing body of work, his soundtrack to A Charlie Brown Christmas might be the best example: an elegant, jazzy arrangement of “Greensleeves,” my favorite holiday song, sits alongside a haunting and dense riff on “The Little Drummer Boy”, as well as the defining Peanuts theme song, “Linus and Lucy.” Those tracks and the others Guaraldi lay evoke not just childhood nostalgia but a wistfulness for other times of both more and less community, making the soundtrack a splendid shared holiday experience to listen to, with family, friends or alone, adult or child.
Guaraldi himself scored all the Peanuts specials from 1963 through the late 1970s’ ill-fated It’s Arbor Day, Charlie Brown. Fans collected those of his scores and cues that had not been released on official soundtracks like some sort of cryptocurrency, their value tracked not in the blockchain but in their ability to convey so evocatively innocence, playfulness, loneliness and delight, whether those of a small child or of an odd yellow bird in his birdhouse bachelor pad. Like Woodstock listening to his hi-fi, we can dream of being together, even if the holidays find us apart.
