#all saints' Church
Video
youtube
It had been ages since we'd been up to the top of the tower of the church (the Schlosskirche, or All Saints' Church) in Wittenberg, Germany, to whose door Martin Luther nailed his theses just over 500 years ago.  As an added bonus, the Elbe River was in flood, so we absolutely had to go up to take a look around.  Here's what we saw on the 28th of December, 2023.
Sorry that the wind is so loud sometimes.  It was crazy windy and cold up there!

Do the LDS have any special holidays or is it just Christmas and Easter? If the answer is yes, please talk a bit about them! If not, any ideas what they might be?
Hmmm the only one I can think of would be Pioneer Day?? (July 24? I think?) But I think that’s mostly just a Utah thing not worldwide. Since I live in the “Mormon Corridor” of Canada with lots of our ancestry being from Utah we do sometimes celebrate a little bit as in like we sing a pioneer type hymn in church that week. Some years I remember talks about pioneer ancestors in church. I don’t think it happens as much anymore here.
I guess we also remember the anniversary of the church’s reorganization (Apr 6) and those who are really on the ball might know the anniversary of the first vision (I don’t) It’s not really a holiday though. More just like “huh thats neat” and maybe some years they will do a special broadcast on like the 175 anniversary or something.
But as everyone knows, general conference weekend is the biggest holiday there is 😂

All Saints
Tumblr media
We are surrounded by reminders of the saints. Hospitals and nursing homes. Schools and colleges. Streets and towns. All named after well-known, beloved saints.
But they’re not what All Saints Day is about.
All Saints Day is a reminder. A reminder that the famous saints, the saints that stuff gets named for, aren’t the only saints. That we are surrounded by many, many more saints.
Men and women who are living lives of holiness. Unseen and unsung.
Not because they’re not important. Not because what they’re doing isn’t making a difference in people’s lives. Not because their daily struggle to live the Faith doesn’t matter.
But because to them, none of this is a big deal. To them, today is just another Wednesday.
Another day with all of the burdens and cares of their lives. Another day that they’re getting through with God’s help.
Truth be told, the saints around us are unseen and unsung because we’re not paying attention.
We’re either so wrapped up in ourselves that we miss what they’re doing. Or we’re stuck with the unspoken assumption that if it’s really something from God, then it’s going to be so big, so dramatic, that even we can’t ignore it. Or it doesn’t count.
The reality of the saints around us is that this is their normal. Living in God’s grace. Seeing the need and meeting it. Not solving the world’s problems. Just helping with today’s.
With all of the same needs, problems, and distractions that you and I face. Everyday.
These are the saints that, in a way, matter even more than the well-known, beloved saints. Because these are the saints that you and I are called to be.
What separates us from them, the saints we are called to be, is one simple thing. They don’t rely on themselves. They rely on God.
Because they’re grounded in the wisdom of today’s Gospel, the Beatitudes. All of the “Blessed are the...” sayings (“Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the Kingdom of heaven,” etc.).
It’s a Gospel we’ve heard so many times that we don’t think about what it really is.
Simply put, it is the roadmap to becoming a saint.
And it begins with the reality of our spiritual poverty. Recognizing that you and I can’t handle things on our own. That we can’t rely on ourselves.
Then turning to God. And relying on God.
The God who is waiting to give us everything. Not everything we want – everything we need. If we will but only ask.
This is how we become the saints we are called to be.

Listen, I've been there. I literally walked the streets of Salt Lake City with my girlfriend and thought "are we gonna get hatecrimed if we hold hands?"
But here's a protip from Mormonland: even a fervently homophobic Mormon will never say a word to your face about it. Not to a stranger anyway. Not in person.
You don't understand how deeply Being Nice is ingrained in our culture. Every Mormon who's served a mission has been trained to take any and all discomfort and abuse with a smile. They know about catching flies with honey, and you don't get converts by stirring up "the spirit of contention."
So you can be very openly gay around a homophobic Mormon, and they will smile. They will Be Nice.
Will they complain about you to another homophobe later? Will they vote to take your rights away? Will they write vile things on the internet? Will they do it all under the guise of "I love gay people! Really! I just have some Disagreements?" Probably. And it's shitty.
But you can use Being Nice. The homophobic Mormon will be an accomplice to many a Gay Thing if the alternative is no longer Being Nice. And maybe, somewhere under all the Evil Cult Brainwashing (🙄) the homophobic Mormon will start to rethink their homophobia.
Or you can just make them extremely uncomfortable as you trap them by societal convention. That's fun too.

Oh my goodness I am GIDDY!!!! 🤩 I know this doesn’t mean a thing to most of my followers, but these buildings (especially the Kirtland Temple) were HUGE in the history of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and I cannot believe we’ve finally been able to purchase them!!!
Literal miracles happened here. Jesus Christ came. So did angels and Moses, Elijah, and Elias. Truth was restored, God’s power bestowed, and Biblical prophecy fulfilled here. This is sacred ground.
I am absolutely thrilled.

The Bloodborne Character Spice Tolerance Ranking 🥵🌶️🌶️🌶️🔥
LOWEST: WEAK. PITIFUL. NO SPICE TOLERANCE. CRIES FROM BLACK PEPPER.
Micolash and Rom - These two are sharing a place at the VERY BOTTOM. If they bite into a whole peppercorn they scream and cry from the pain.
Adella - no.
Alfred - Is convinced spicy foods are a Vileblood invention of evil because they cause him so much PAIN.
Edgar - Slightly better than those ranked lower than him because he can keep a straight face despite being in utter agony at the little chili flake that slipped onto his pasta.
Laurence - Part of the reason why he's on fire in the Nightmare is because the Great Ones deemed it fitting not only for his sins, but to torture him with his lack of spices tolerance. Can handle a LITTLE bit of red pepper flakes on his pizza.
Gehrman - he strikes me as a bean chili guy but with a quarter of the required amount of chili flakes in the whole batch. In other words: not even remotely spicy to most people.
Bloody Crow - you'd think he'd avoid spicy foods. No. He actually LOVES crying in agony as he consumes every food he puts cayenne and ghost peppers on. The spice makes him FEEL something in his SOUL. A touch of chili powder in some soup is enough to get a reaction out of him.
Lady Maria - she shrivels up and dies, and her acid reflux combined with whiteness and autism, makes her undulate like a choking cat when she eats something too spicy. She does like a mild kick, though! Emphasis on mild.
Brador - Despite his masochistic tendencies he can't handle a green spicy salsa. However he CAN handle black pepper without a sweat! Maybe a drizzle of chili oil in some stir fry. Yay!
Adeline - She goes teehee as she adds sliced jalepeños into her soup! Just for a kick, nothing that will set her mouth on fire tho. She likes a mild burning sensation every once in a while.
Ludwig - Definitely appreciates some spicy garlic or buffalo sauce on his wings. But the spice must be paired with some other strong flavor or he can't take it. And... Maybe a glass of milk.
Djura - he's been through the burning of Old Yharnam, he can absolutely handle some heat in his food. Plus his willingness to try new recipes, he's landed in some Indian and Mexican cuisine before. And he loved it! His limit is probably biting straight into a habanero tho.
Yamamura - He isn't a huge fan of spicy food because he prefers if his food doesn't fight his mouth to any degree. But! A modern AU version of him would go nuts over spicy instant ramen. Because it's not that spicy to him! It's just warm to him lol.
Valtr - He is not a picky eater at all and will try absolutely everything, as such he has tried many ethnic spicy foods and is proud of how high his tolerance is from many years of consuming chili, curry, kimchi, and now he cannot resist some Tabasco sauce on his roast beast... A ghost pepper will still get him tho lol.
Gascoigne - ever since he's been introduced to Tabasco sauce through Valtr (who he knows from Henryk) he has not been the same. He cannot stop putting that shit on everything he BBQs and Viola has to tell him to hold back for everyone else's safety. He's even dumped some straight into his mouth before. He LOVES it!
Henryk - He can put on a straight face biting into a ghost pepper, and while he would choose sweet or salty over spicy, he handles spice far above his peers. Loves the curry Eileen makes for him, extra spicy with bold flavors for both of them to enjoy. Although, a Carolina reaper will have him reaching for the milk in defeat lol.
Simon - Having grandparents from the Middle East means having food that has some actual goddamn flavor. He's flabbergasted hearing other people say "it's too spicy!" When this is a Tuesday afternoon lunch to him. Why is everyone else crying from biting into this ghost pepper like wtf?? It's not even that hot?? What's the hype over this challenge?
Eileen - She would die for curry. It's her favorite food. Her mentor taught her many Mongolian and other Asian recipes for curry. She extended to learning how to make real Indian curry that would make everyone else but the top 5 cry from spiciness. Her mother, with the very few memories she had of her, taught her how to make spicy jollof to go with even spicier meat. She can and will bite into a Carolina reaper, chew, and swallow it like it was just a cookie.
HIGHEST: POWERFUL. STRONG. BUILT DIFFERENT. EATS CAROLINA REAPERS WITHOUT A PROBLEM.

The Star Market
Marie Howe
The people Jesus loved were shopping at the Star Market yesterday. An old lead-colored man standing next to me at the checkout breathed so heavily I had to step back a few steps.
Even after his bags were packed he still stood, breathing hard and hawking into his hand. The feeble, the lame, I could hardly look at them: shuffling through the aisles, they smelled of decay, as if the Star Market
had declared a day off for the able-bodied, and I had wandered in with the rest of them—sour milk, bad meat— looking for cereal and spring water.
Jesus must have been a saint, I said to myself, looking for my lost car in the parking lot later, stumbling among the people who would have been lowered into rooms by ropes, who would have crept
out of caves or crawled from the corners of public baths on their hands and knees begging for mercy.
If I touch only the hem of his garment, one woman thought, could I bear the look on his face when he wheels around?
#I posted an excerpt of this poem yesterday but it felt necessary to post the whole thing today#because this poem#this darn poem#knows exactly where i live#'the feeble the lame i could hardly look at them'#i (like many of you) grew up around Christians like 85% of the time#i chose not to go to a Christian college specifically so that i could try to mitigate this part of my heart#that feels almost viscerally uncomfortable around certain types of people#i want to learn to love all my neighbors with Christ's abounding love#i know that I am no less sinful than my neighbor#but sometimes it's like there's a bee in the room and i don't know where it is#i'm set on edge by certain kinds of sin#in a way that i'm not by others#i'm sure this is true in degrees for many of us raised in the church#and this poem. this darn poem calls us out directly#it calls /me/ out directly#'The people Jesus loved were shopping at the Star Market yesterday. I could hardly look at them.'#'Jesus must have been a saint (that's the one bit i don't like-- Jesus must have been GOD) to be able to love these people'#'these people who came stumbling towards him crawling towards him lowered through the ceiling towards him'#'begging for mercy. begging with more humility than I manage on any but my best day'#'the people Jesus loved-- and i could hardly look at them'#and that last line hits you right in the solar plexus#'if I could only touch the hem of his garment could I bear the look on his face when he wheels around?'#no. no i don't think i could#and yet#i imagine that look would be so so beautiful#and by the grace of God i know i CAN bear it#i and all the other people Jesus loves#Bible humans#literature makes us more human
