#I FINALLY think I figured out what Zaz looks like #(I think I've talked about them once or twice on here) #you guys do not understand how many different iterations they have gone through in my attempts to get them on paper #but I think I've got it and I'm happy with it #but drawing them more is making me think more about their people and planet and I have IDEAS #so I was having allllll the people on their planet be nomadic. but I have concluded that's a little difficult to believe #~100 million nomads. that's a lot. #so I am thinking about having some of them build semi floating cities #lashing boats together to make floating platforms. #finding naturally occurring sandbanks (this would be easy because the ocean is so shallow) and making them larger with baskets of sand #taking seeds and saplings from the mangroves that grow around the islands and planting them around/on the sandbank and baskets #and between the rafts to hold things together and prevent erosion #(kind of think of tenochtitlan) #and then around the city they could have huge coral reef gardens that they manage and care for as their food source #they could grow mussels and clams and such on the supports on stilts under their homes #they could keep flocks of birds for food and feathers and train them for hunting and long distance communication #the trees would be used for building new structures and stability of the city and to make fabrics/textiles #the cities could be stopping points for the nomadic people's for trade and parties/celebrations/holidays #or maybe some of them could be for religious purposes and have temples #aaaaaaaa I am having so many thoughts THIS WOULD BE SO COOL

There's a Doe that lives in the woods that is IN LOVE with Mountain. He drops his glamour and enters the woods, as soon as she sees his massive antlers through the trees she bounds over to him and is allllll up in his business.

Mountain will just be doing his earth ghoul thing and this deer will be trying to get in his space, nibbling his ears and tail and trying to lick his face and rub herself all over him like a cat.

He'll politely just push her away from him while he's busy, he's trying to be gentle and doesn't want to accidentally hurt her but she's hellbent on showing this ghoul that She. Wants. Him.

Finally one day it must get to be too much, Cirrus and Sunny are heading to the woods for an afternoon hike when they hear birds fleeing the scene as a booming voice comes out of the trees desperately yelling

Probably won't have time to do many more of these for a bit because I'm off to Edinburgh shortly, but let's all have fun with a BIRD poll! And today we're going with the common sparrow (Passer domestics). I'm going with this one because, believe it or not, the hedge sparrow, despite being a related species that's extremely visually similar, has approximately seven billion names in Welsh and I only have ten poll entries. So here we go!

The etymology of some of these is VERY HARD and triggered quite the rabbit hole on my part so I hope you're all grateful

Sbrocsyn: if you chase it allllll the way back, you land on proto-indo-European spḗr, meaning... well. Sparrow. But in some subsequent languages it became starling (e.g. Dutch) and in one case crow (Breton), so I've translated it here as bird. The -syn ending gives it a cute little diminutive vibe

Aderyn y to: Wales used to go in for thatched roofs in a big way, and the sparrows liked to live in them

Aderyn llwyd y to: Someone was feeling descriptive and wordy

Cainc y to: Why?? Is it a branch??? This one is odd. Maybe referring to the roof beams?

Golfan: very hard to translate!!! It looks like the original is the Old Irish 'golbann', but it's impossible to find a confirmed etymology. Using my knowledge of Welsh and my miniscule memory of Irish, bright woman is the best I can do (geal + bean). But it has cognates in the other Celtic languages - gealbhann, gealbhonn, gialloon, golvan.

Strew: another difficult one, but this looks like a loanword from the same place as English straw and strew, referring to the grains of the crops. Which they eat.

Llwytyn: from llwyd, meaning grey, with the diminutive ending. They are mostly grey, 'tis true

Gwelltyn: from gwellt, meaning straw, with the diminutive ending. Another roof reference

But if he’s out he probably takes you with him. He goes out shopping and brings you with him, he goes to a “family meeting” and brings you with him, he goes to pick up a specialized order from the Duke and brings you with him.

Speaking of that. He orders lots of things from the Duke to make sure that you are comfortable. Special beds, books, devices, anything you can’t think off, he’s gonna pay the Duke a little extra to make sure he gets some for you.

He doesn’t like to let you out on your own. He doesn’t trust the people around you, or the Lycans around you not to hurt you.

Don’t even let me get started on his reaction if you make friends, or god forbid find a partner.

But??? What if??? What if they hurt you???? What if it’s that bird bitch in disguise??? What if their planning to kill you???? You if their mean? What if their abusive?

Of all the difficult choices in each season of TWDG, What would say are the ones that you struggled with the most for each season?

HMM good question. there are some choices i feel conflicted about when i get to them but these are for the most part the ones that i actively dread having to make (which i like 😏 those are the best choices). there are other choices throughout the series that i feel Bad about, but not necessarily conflicted. like. i Know what my choice is, but i still feel bad about the consequences 😔 these are the ones that i actually mentally find myself battling. i just love the kinds of choices that make me sit on a pause screen for too long when its really Not That Serious

S1: help lilly/help kenny - the circumstances of this choice are what make it hard. literally a ticking time bomb. do you try to save lillys father? even tho hes been nothing but a complete jackass to you AND the group this entire time and put himself in this situation? or do you try to save the group by destroying his brain before its too late? clem being there watching doesnt help because now theres the added layer of "do i brutally murder this man in front of this child even if it means saving her life?" i usually end up trying to help lilly just because i know kenny is gonna do it regardless (and i dont want her to feel completely ostracized by the group). the idea of puling this woman back from her dying father so we can brutally murder him in front of her is.... a lot. like.. you can TRY to save him you know?? even if he turns hed still have to get off the ground first just hold the salt lick ready kenny 💀 plus you still have to actually Die first before turning. theyd have a second to feel his pulse stop. but its a very hectic scene where youre forced to act first think later. and either way clem is forced to see it. the worst part about it is knowing kenny is gonna be on my ass about it even tho i side with him on LITERALLY EVERYTHING ELSE 😐😑

shoot lee/leave lee - its just 😭 telling this little girl to kill the one person she has left, moments after seeing her dead parents. its time for her to start doing the hard things. but to tell her to do THIS?? you are fucking that child up beyond belief. but also the guilt she'll carry if she DOESNT do it, knowing hes still in that jewelry store, possibly chained to it, forever (which the narrative impact of lee starting and ending the game in handcuffs (possibly a prisoner in his own body??) makes me SCREAM AND CRY LEEEEEEEEEEE THATS GOOD NARRATIVE BAYBEE).

S2: shoot kenny/look away - another "is clem ready to do this?" kind of moment. its time for her to start making her own choices. what does SHE want?? i think even a clem who shoots kenny is gonna be conflicted about it on some level. recently i played a clem who let kenny kill jane then shot him anyway. that was cool :) and the moment is way more dark than shooting him outright. no heartfelt goodbyes. just a tired "do it". oof. the set up for the kenny/jane fight is Not Good like we ALLLLLL KNOOWWW it shouldve been luke ok. but the choice itself is still a HUGE character moment for clem, and its one of my favorite and most dreaded choices in the series. how is clem feeling about kenny at this point? is shooting him something she can do?? before its too late?? or will she be paralyzed by choice? this is a choice she Never shouldve had to make, but here she is, and she has to. before time runs out. i like my clems alone so usually i either wait out the clock (no choice is still a choice. clem just cant do it but cant look away either) and stay at wellington (good alone ending), or i shoot him 1 of 2 ways (clem Can do it)(bad alone ending). shooting him after he kills jane is just like 2 birds one stone to me SHDHSJKDS 💀 and it hits that middle ground of being paralyzed by choice but still ultimately Making A Choice, just too late for it to matter to anyone but herself. and her line of dialogue finding aj alone "we're gonna be ok, we're gonna be ok" like shes trying to reassure herself more than anything WAAAHH i kinda liked it a Lot actually 👀

S3: ??? romancing kate or not i guess?? - its the only one that really made me feel conflicted (aside from maybe the conrad thing?? sorry clem but im gonna force you to stick around actually i like it for the Narrative and it makes gabe less annoying later. also conrads alright). do you respect your brother or do you get with his wife who hates him LOL. because its not one choice you make, not really. its one the game is constantly asking of you, putting you in situations where the choice needs to be made again and again until finally you make the Ultimate choice about it. people who complain about the game being so pushy about it are kinda funny to me because like, ya.. thats the whole point.... (ive pushed back defiantly Literally just because of how pushy the game is about it tho so like i get it) she is a temptation the game is intentionally dangling in front of javi. she is the Final source of conflict between the brothers. will he remain loyal or give into it? i say give in 😏 give david something to actually be mad about. ive both romanced her and not, and the game kinda feels stunted if you dont? like... i Get It. thats your brothers wife who is still wearing her ring after YEARS of him being gone. theres 😬 feelings there. but even if you dont romance her the game still punishes you by having her be weird about it in the garage in front of david anyway. i say do it even tho its messy. it makes the story more sound imo which S3 desperately needs at that point. javi can still feel bad about it. what DID david expect?? i love mess :)

S4: kill couple/send aj inside - i love a choice that gives me a lot to think about. even if the actual in game consequences are flimsy to none. with this choice specifically, what makes it hard is the fact that the couple asked to be left alone. if they were just two walkers it wouldve been a no brainer. but with their final request, it becomes a matter of respecting the dying wish of this sad couple (which becomes narratively relevant at the end of the game OUGH WHEN IT COMES BACK). and will you teach aj that respecting those wishes is important? he needs to learn to become self sufficient anyway. clem crawled through her own number of dangerous holes in her youth. but thats the other side of it. that clem, knowing personally how dangerous crawling into those spaces where no one could follow was, i dont know how comfortable she would be letting aj do the same. but also, she doesnt want him to grow up too hardened. if she kills this couple, its pushing him further into that hardened mindset. to do whatever you have to to survive, no matter the cost to others. its a choice i find myself sitting with the longest even tho its consequences are pretty much just 2 lines of dialogue ("that couple clem tried to Guilt me about" LMAO YEAH ITS TRUE AJ THIS IS A LEARNING MOMENT FOR YOU). but yeah this is a choice i have a 50/50 chance with going either way on. every time i kill the couple i feel so bad about it 😭 (and so does clem 🥺). it being more of a philosophical question instead of an actual gameplay decision is what i like about it

not sure/take things slow/girlfriends/kiss - NOT JOKING ABOUT THIS ONE its actually so hard for me HSDHSDJKSJKDJK i dont have a paragraph of reasons why tho i just love them all differently. the first two feel the most realistic. i do like the idea of taking things slow and the dialogue for it is really sweet. but also. they might die or be taken tonight. so one kiss before everything could come crashing down on them is nice. but also hearing them call each other girlfriends???? adds years to my life. vi in ep 3 being like "um so you said you wanted to be girlfriends 🥺?" and clem like "😏 ya" i just love hearing them say it 😭 Out Loud 👁👁. and then either way clem gets another chance to kiss her in the woods in ep 3 so it works out. and 2 more kisses in ep 4 from vi this time!! thank you devs for my life 🙏 what a wonderful choice

seokjin doesn’t have a plan/itinerary, but he does have a massive list of all the restaurants he wants to hit, wineries/breweries/distilleries you might come across, etc. and he actually does a good job of keeping you calm with all the travel stress by being a giant fuckin goofball. this is the one situation where he’s not yelling, whining, etc. when he gets frustrated because he prioritizes your well-being 💕

yoongi has his shit right together, but in a very low key way. he doesn’t announce any of it, but he’s in full airport dad mode. he knows exactly when your flight is and how early you need to be there; he’s done the pre-boarding whatever the fuck. he somehow has any toiletry item you didn’t even think to bring. i guarantee he has tampons and tummy meds and shit, just in case. thoughtful bastard 😭 but don’t you dare comment on any of this or make it a big deal that he’s so prepared because he will blush to death.

hoseok is free as a fucking bird. he’s following the wind, babeeeeey. he is allergic to planning, doesn’t want to have a destination in mind. he’ll flip a coin to see where you’re flying. where are you staying? you’ll figure it out when you get tired. energy out the wazoo, too. no time for naps — you’ve got shit to do, people to meet, places to be!!

jimin strikes me as the anxious traveler type, so i bet he’s checking and re-checking all your reservations, making sure your backup plans have backup plans, etc., because he needs whatever you’re doing to go well and be 👏🏻 special 👏🏻. you must hold his hand at all times so you don’t get separated, and because he needs an anchor. he will most certainly, accidentally get wine drunk in the airport bar due to stress, lmao.

The Todoroki's are honestly just happy to see Natsuo happy and taken care of, with that being said they each approach Natsuo's new found relationship in wildly different ways:

Rei: Stereotypical mom. When she hears that Natsuo has a boyfriend she badgers him for months to bring him to one of the family dinners but Natsuo refuses. He's never brought anyone home to meet his family before and he reasons that Shoto and Touya haven't brought Keigo and Fumikage to a family dinner yet so why should he have to put Stolas through that? When Rei finally meets him at the hospital after Natsuo's kidnapping she's a rightfully a mess and flustered but she's so pleased to see that he's every bit as sweet and doting (and handsome) as Touya promised her the owl was. She definitely has one of those super embarrassing "Oh it's so nice to finally meet one of Natsuo's significant others!" which Stolas just takes in stride (yet another first of Natsuo's he gets to have 😉)

Touya: Touya definitely helped get these two idiots together, but when it seemed like things might actually be in it for the long haul he gives Stolas the shovel talk. Things definitely get out of hand and they both end up pretty freaked out. Touya and Stolas get along well though, Touya is pleased to see someone is finally taking care of Natsuo.

Fuyumi: Fuyumi always gives the appearance of calm, but really she's just as feral as her brothers, it's just no one ever believes them because once they meet her they peg her the sweetheart that she is. Fuyumi has always been protective of Natsuo, so when he tells her he's dating one person exclusively?! She absolutely stalks Stolas on every social media she can, and when she can't find enough information she contemplates getting a PI but first she pulls her strongest card: Mo. Mo gives her allllll the tea on Stolas. When Fuyumi finds out that even Mo approves of Stolas then he get's her stamp of approval.

Shoto: Honestly he's just happy someone is making Natsuo happy. Shoto is too observant for his own good and Knows™️ Nat isn't good at taking care of himself, or setting healthy boundaries that have his best interest in mind so watching Stolas help him with those things earns him Shoto's approval. Shoto definitely marked off his conspiracy theory that Todoroki's attract birds... and then subsequently had to redact that theory when Fuyumi started dating Miruko.

Cash (June 5, 2017-March 19, 2024)

It’s so strange, to me—the emptiness.

The space that used to be filled has gone silent. The bed is empty. The food dish unfilled.

I find myself haunted by absence. An imagined footfall or jingle of a collar. A whine in the night.

Walking down the stairs with the expectation of happy butt wiggles and cute, seal-faced joy. Being careful not to drop food, because the dog might eat it. (He pounced on everything you dropped, always. He was on a very particular diet for health reasons.)

So much of my life and my daily life revolved around him. A few summers back, my dad even painted the back sliding door, because Cash was very offended that birds exist and kept hurling himself at the glass. Once he couldn’t see them, he chilled out. He also was annoyed if someone was Outside and he was inside. Keep in mind, he didn't want to be outside. He just didn't want you out there.

Cash had a very specific bed time. He could tell time incredibly well. And he would be very annoyed if his bedtime came and went and he wasn’t tucked in. He’d stare at you, like, “Hey, excuse me. We’re late.” He knew different days of the week, and he knew when to expect one of my siblings for a weekly visit.

He objected to departures, because how dare you. The only way to placate him was to offer him a plate of snackies as you exited. He loved bananas and ice cubes with a little bit of pumpkin frozen in them. I still have a whole baggie of them in the freezer. I'd just made him a fresh batch of sweet potatoes, his favorite treat, the other day. I cannot bring myself to throw them out yet.

He was very smart and learned tricks fast. This was the first dog I ever trained without my mother around. Sometimes, I was very sure he was smarter than me. He was also very, very stubborn, and you could tell when he heard a command and was like, nope.

Cash had anxiety. He was on meds. (Big fan of meds. The difference they made for him was incredible.) He saw a specialist. She was a godsend and went above and beyond to help, especially when he started to have health issues last year. Then, in Sept., he bloated, and an emergency surgery saved his life. The second I realized the symptoms (because I dive into research mode when I am trying to fix or help), it was off to the doggo ER before the sun began to rise.

Most dogs are fine after bloat surgery, if it's caught in time. Cash was not. Because Cash also had IBD and to get him to eat following his surgery, he got food that he wasn’t supposed to have. This caused all sorts of chaos for him. For months, I hand-filled a new medicine (powder into gel caps). I became very good at it, despite looking like I was moonlighting as Walter White. Or Scarface. Later, I made approximately 400 phone calls to get him a different med that he needed and had to come from a specialized pharmacy.

By all accounts, he should’ve died back in September, so the time since then has been extra time. I missed so many things taking care of him, spending time with him, playing allllll the rounds of fetch (his favorite). It took up so much of my time and energy. This is the summarized version. But I would’ve done it forever, if it would have made a difference. And I’d do it all again tomorrow, even feeling the way I do right now. I don't love small.

Idk if you still want asks, but do you have any thoughts on Stephen Sondheim's work? 👀

Oh, God, Sondheim and I have a long and complicated history, and some of my views have changed, some of them haven't.

For the most part: His work really isn't my favorite. I'll be the first to admit that I thrive on spectacle, I thrive on catchy tunes and big ballads and epic set pieces and belting. To some people back in the day, that'd have marked me out as a fake musical theatre fan. As someone who has now been in this for the last...well. 14 years, with a working knowledge of musicals across almost every single country that has staged them, I can say I don't care. I know what I like and what I don't like and I own it. I often think that Sondheim's work de-emphasizes the music in favor of the lyrics, which is fine if you like that (he's brilliant), but it isn't where MY focus is. It's the same way I feel about Great Comet.

That being said, I do like INDIVIDUAL Sondheim works -- A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum is dated in many ways, it shows its age in often-uncomfortable ways, but it DOES have an absolutely iconic opening number and is probably one of the single most pitch-perfect adaptations of a Roman comedy.

West Side Story (though, since he was only responsible for the lyrics, YMMV as far as how much it belongs on here) -- Iconic, beautiful, truly deserves its place as one of the greats. Again, aspects of it age uncomfortably, but when you consider the time it was made in, it really does make sense. "Tonight", my absolute beloved, perfect depiction of young love that's hurtling at the speed of a shooting star. "I feel Pretty", yes, it's been parodied to death, but it's FUN. "A Boy Like That" chilling, touching, painful given what happens afterward. "Maria"...is there.

Sweeney Todd -- I've never been able to watch it because of the whistle sound, it's a little too sharp for me (and I refuse to watch the film). Imo, not musically as good as West Side Story, but it STILL has some great numbers, "Johanna" (esp. the quartet), "Green Finch and Linnet Bird", "Poor Thing" (which is nightmare inducing), "Epiphany" (THEY ALLLLLL DESERVEEEE TO DIIIIIEEEEEEEEEE), "The Ballad of Sweeney Todd" (SWING YOUR RAZZZOOORR HIIIIIIIIIIGGGGGHHHHH SWEENEY HOLLDDD IT TO THE SKYYYYYYYYY), which, very much to its credit, ABSOLUTELY inspired the various reprises of Facade in Jekyll and Hyde.

Into the Woods -- A little too mean spirited and cynical for my taste, even as it doesn't end on a totally miserable note and tries to reconstruct the world of fairy tales. I like individual strands of it, I like "Last Midnight", but it's hard to get over the cynical attitude towards fairy tales at the heart of it.

A Little Night Music - Probably my first Sondheim and honestly one of my favorites to this day, I love "Every day a little death" in particular and, of course, the iconic "Send in the Clowns." Désirée, the woman that you are.

Passion - One I've never actually listened to, but I appreciate the book, and I appreciate Sondheim's defense of Fosca, which I'll get to.

Company - ...well. "Being Alive" is nice.

Something I'll give Sondheim is that he was really comfortable shining a light on the human soul, the dark and the light parts, in a way that I think a lot of composers since have TRIED to imitate and that I don't think any have really succeeded in in the same way. And something I really give him, looking back as I was writing this, is that I don't think there's anything particularly SEXIST about the way that he writes female characters; I don't think that he has the Frank Wildhorn Madonna - Whore Complex or the ALW Every Woman Is My Ex Or My Wife Complex or the LMM Every Woman Is In Love With M-I Mean, My Protagonist Complex or the Michael Kunze Women Ruin Everything Complex. Like, "he writes women as people" should be a low bar for a male composer to clear, especially since I've never seen a female composer praised for writing male characters as people (we would consider it a cardinal writing sin if she didn't), but it's something of note. He has messy women, he has obsessive women, and they are distinctly WOMEN whose identities and roles in the story are intricately tied to them being women...but I don't think they're sexist because they're right there next to his men who are equally as messy and obsessive. And I do love the way that he defended Fosca in "Passion:" "[Audiences] refused to believe that anyone, much less the handsome Giorgio, could come to love someone so manipulative and relentless, not to mention physically repellent, as Fosca. As the perennial banality would have it, they couldn't 'identify' with the main characters. The violence of their reaction, however, strikes me as an example of 'The lady doth protest too much.' I think they may have identified with Giorgio and Fosca all too readily and uncomfortably. The idea of a love that's pure, that burns with D.H. Lawrence's gemlike flame, emanating from a source so gnarled and selfish, is hard to accept. Perhaps they were reacting to the realization that we are all Fosca, we are all Giorgio, we are all Clara."

Whatever I think about his work, whatever I think about his musicals, I can appreciate a man who is willing to appreciate a manipulative, relentless, and physically repellent woman and, not only appreciate her, but to accept that she's a part of him.

Overall, is he my favorite? No. A lot of his music and his overall style just is not to my personal taste. But he's a valuable, vital part of the canon, and with good reason. The man truly was a genius. I think that he did what he set out to do with musicals, even if he and I have different emphases, and I think that he did a lot better with women than MANY composers who like to pat themselves on the back for how progressive they are for including paper-thin female characters.

I've really enjoyed reading The Golden Bird! Forgive me if this is a stupid question, but who was the boy in the cat mask in chapter 1?

I have no idea! Genuinely, no idea. I looked back through my notes to check if he ever had a specific identity or whether I had anything planned for him in future (as you've probably noticed, I am allllll about economy of characters/bringing back the randomest dudes as surprise guests) and found nothing.

I invite and encourage Boy in the Cat Mask headcanons, however!
