Prompt 266

Back on my Danny & Ras frienemies/rivals/maybe-lovers-nobody-can-tell-their-signals-are-very-mixed train.

See, Danny has gone through time a lot. Often. It comes with being Clockwork’s charge-son-thing and honestly he finds it fun. And several times he’s used this time travelling to get some training in. Enter Ras, stage left, also a teen at the time and also learning swordsmanship from the same person.

And they… utterly despise each other. They would kill the other for an apple slice, if the other one would die! But also, only they can kill the other, as it is obviously their right!

And well, they keep running into each other. It has been a hundred years, surely the other would die by now? But of course their rival would live through utter spite. Probably to spite them specifically.

The amount of times they have ended up sparring- trying to kill each other or not- the moment they see the other is actually ridiculous. But time is also passing. And… Danny understands, not having another to talk about things people are forgetting, or have already forgotten.

How they ended up actually talking without a murder attempt was a long story that included a demon, a dragon, a pair of fae, some bandits, and a lot of alcohol, but it happened. And then it happens again. And again, and now it’s just kind of normal to share a drink after their spars, talking about things that no longer exist, and things they miss.

Sure Danny can go back in time again, but he knows better than to do it willy nilly. He’s matured, he’s been an adult for a hundred years now, he knows there’s consequences for messing with time, even with Clockwork’s blessings.

The first time they got married was technically for an undercover assassination. Well, Ras was there to assassinate someone, Danny was there to grab an artifact that should Not be in the realm of the living. And they got divorced after, it was fine.

They just, also got married again when they met a few years later, for another job. And… okay, so maybe they have gotten married over a dozen times now and only divorced like half of those times. Half of those were for the bit or while drunk!

And even if technically they’re married or shared a bed, it’s not like they're exclusive! As Ras’ daughters’ existences attest to (adopted in one case or not). They don’t exactly have a label for their relationship, despite others asking for one or trying to put a name to it themselves.

Now Danny knows Ras isn’t exactly a good dude, or at least on the side of ‘good’ as he’s a literal assassin. But he also knows that good? Bad? Rather relative. He had gotten labeled as a villain when he was just trying to help all that time ago after all, and really who was he to tell someone else how to live their life?

Which brings him to now, where he’s run into his old frienemy-rival and his youngest daughter. Who has a braindead teenager and a small toddler. Which is fine, really- but also, Talia dear, why are you using a brain dead teenager to guard your three year old son?

Okay, Talia dear, Ras (Derogatory), why are you using your brain dead son and grandson to guard your younger son and grandson? Do you not have the Pits, which you were soo proud about Ras? Yes, he will spar with you, but for Realms’ sake, heal, what’s his name? Ah yes, go heal Jason and he’ll actually stick around for a few years, deal? Good.

Slade decides he's gonna do Dick a favor. He's gonna end this stupid war for Gotham or whatever deranged nonsense the Bat is up to now, and add it to the list of 'favors' Dick owes him. And he knows how to do it.

He's gonna act like the Bat himself put a hit out on the smartest bird, the first Robin's first acknowledged brother; he's going to pretend to gun for the bo-wielding Robin at the Batman's request.

He knows the man's slipping mentally, it's fairly obvious.

So he gets his resources together, lays a false trail, and starts "hunting" the third Robin. He leaves hints, clues, things like that. Brags to Nightwing that if Robin III is expendable to the Batman, then how long until he tries to take Nightwing out as well. He gets very, very close to taking out the little Robin once or twice; one time the newest, youngest Robin stopping him with a positively feral look.

It is, in a word...fun. High stakes tag, so to speak.

It doesn't take long before Batman is convinced he put a hit out on one of his own birds.

Thinking about "your weakness is how you always want to be the hero" and how the series returns to this at the end

Li Lianhua hated how he acted as Li Xiangyi and spent years trying to distance himself from it, but ultimately he still fell back into the similar patterns, for all his added experience

His main priority was always to "do the right thing" regardless of how that would impact on those around him. And it *did* impact those around him. From Qiao Wanmian and Shan Gudao as Li Xiangyi to Fang Duobing and Di Feisheng as Li Lianhua

Giving the Styx flower to the emperor so he could use it as leverage to guarantee Fang Duobing and his family's safety. Using the last of his power to save Yun Biqiu. Constantly putting others above himself whilst actively refusing to recognise that his self-sacrificial nature would hurt those he cared about most

And sure, he thinks he's going to die anyway. They're going to be hurt regardless and he can't do anything about that. His odds are low of the Styx flower even working. But ultimately, he refuses to even consider trying. Li Xiangyi has been dead a long time and Li Lianhua is just there to tide things over. What value is the life of a ghost

To the end, he lives and dies a hero. To the end, he refuses to live for himself.

#sth about how he almost managed to live for himself but his past and need to do right doomed him.#those missing years before canon starts were probably the closest he got but even then the knowledge he couldn't use martial arts #must have killed him (no pun intended). because he'd put so much stock in his identity as sigu sect leader + hero + prodigy #so to have such a massive part of his identity stripped from him... honestly it doesn't seem that he ever fully comes to terms with it #but he makes progress and he tries to do better. + that leads to him becoming a different type of 'hero' than the symbol he was originally #deep down he wants to help people with all he has but his capacity isn't infinite + at some point can only be taken from himself #mysterious lotus casebook #mlc spoilers #also to be clear I mention shan gudao not to say lxy should have realised earlier bc for a lot of the time he was too young to notice #and later on sgd did better at hiding his intentions. but more for how lxy tunnel visioned towards his idea of righteousness #and steamrolled over everyone else. both sgd and qwm were placed far below the importance of the sigu sect #and lxy's arrogance made it such that sigu became reliant on him alone as he shut others out (hence domino fall once he went).#idk if he could ever have 'fixed' what was btwn him and sgd bc it was so deep rooted but I do think that his actions #helped convince sgd that sgd was entirely in the right to choose his path #mlc #edit: just went and checked the exact wording of the TL and it's actually 'you like being a hero' rather than 'you want to be the hero'#which is different but still close enough in implications for my point to stand (I think)

arc 8 otto gets more and more deranged with every appearance i love it 😭😭😭😭 this chapter was a mainly otto centric one which was fascinating!!! URGH i have many thoughts :((( the whole chapter being about “walking with light”….. where otto acknowledges that:

and this is AFTER julius apologizes to otto and otto emphasizes to julius’s face that. yeah. julius is still an enemy. like yeah theyre exchanging more pleasant words now but otto specifically emphasizes that otto isnt a knight. julius isnt a merchant. julius is in another camp. theyre opposites T^T AND THEN roswaal telling otto that opposing emilia and subarus way of thinking is a poison that Will kill him. BUT THEN OTTO says

he cant walk with light meaning he cant see reality and still choose to be idealistic and noble like julius and emilia and subaru even though hes still trying to support emilia and subaru. :,,,))) and he admits that!!! hes still choosing to walk a darker path than them even knowing hes not as strong as others!!! even knowing that emilia and subaru will never agree with him and vice versa!!! hes walking alone, in a way T^T

#world of warcraft #anduin wrynn #tw blood #blood #okay so #A few things went poorly with this piece and thus it warrants a future redraw #I wanted the ally symbol to look almost knife-like like it was sharp and shiney #that it'd cut into Anduins neck which the symbol is pressed against #The idea was based on how Anduins title and job end up harming him- the real him. the person he wants to be.#that in being king you dont get to be you you have to be someone else #as in everyone elses' needs go above your own #i think alot about how Anduin as a teen was much more sassy and joked alot about things #and since being king Anduin hasnt really had many moments like that #if you listen to Anduin's Heros of the Storm voice lines they do a really good job of depicting a king anduin who retains his humor #humor which WoW anduin had to push down to focus on war #anyway thats just one idea this piece also sorta could reference how working for the alliance has physically hurt him too #or #that it is his neck we could consider how kings often are beheaded and what that symbolizes #That his job is slowly killing him #look Anduin would be happier and could do more of what he wants to do if he walked away from the throne #the other thing that went poorly with the art was that i just couldnt do blood properly

What I want most in the entire world is for Sun Wukong to slowly be more included in the LMK gang

After a life-threatening event (post LBD, after the scroll, etc), MK and his friends usually share a group hug. A family hug! And Sun Wukong stays out of it, either walking away or just standing there and watching them

I want SWK to start hanging out around them a little more, either because they're stuck together due to yet another world ending event or something else, to the point where they start to warm up to him (and he starts to warm up to them) and begin to like him a little more

Honestly if we get more than 5 seasons (which please please please let them be well-done, don't let the sequel curse affect LMK too) then I'd like this to be long. Let's say, in one season he hangs out with them and they begin to at the very least tolerate him, in another season they become a little more closer and pretty much already consider him some kind of friend and then at the end of the next season he's already one of their best friends

And it has to end in yet another group hug scene! One where when Sun Wukong smiles fondly and walks away to let the family have their moments in peace, someone (let it be anyone who isn't MK, just to show how MK isn't SWK's only friend [besides the monkeys in FFM. And not counting any god or being he is friendly with because we know he doesn't see those much] anymore) calls out to him and says, “Where the fuck are you going. This is a group hug, it doesn't work if the whole group isn't in it” and he smiles (let him cry dammit) and joins in

the ex super villain-super hero pair make a return! jean used to be a villain until alex sort of. convinced him to switch sides (the embarrassing reality is that alex had a crush on jean even when jean was very earnestly trying to kill him, and when jean got pinned under a car during a fight, alex asked him out while rescuing him, and jean said yes for reasons no one has figured out) then they spent six years working together in a group (that scribble to the left with the sort of motor cycle looking gear is what jean would wear because fuck costumes, he showed up to break bones)

jean’s default expression is nothing. one time he broke his arm badly enough it broke skin, and absolutely nothing on his face gave away that he was in any kind of pain. alex is still doing hero shit because you gotta pay those bills, but he kind of missed how stressful it is for jean, just because it’s. like. all of this is televised and inescapable, and jean didn’t bring it up until he had to pick alex up from the hospital after a close call, but alex is absolutely gutted when realizes how miserable jean was for the past 8 months.

dazai managed to stop oda before he could get to face gide

"if you go there you'll die" "yes I know"

"didn't you want to be a writer?!"

dazai yells, which his eyebrows furrowed, and there is a weird expression, one that stops odasaku for a second. dazai's usually inexpressive eyes are widened and there is something unfamiliar in his face

oda realizes that is hopelessness and his heart clenches

"I did," he replies.

dazai looks desperate and so terribly young as he says, "if you go there i'll have to watch you die"

and oh.

oh.

odasaku cant do that to him, can he?

he thinks about his orphans, his kids, about the explosion, about guilt, and he thinks, I can't do that to him.

odasaku says, mori wants be dead, doesn't he.

and dazai fills the gasp between them and grabs his sleeve and he looks at him with those strange, yet fitting, emotions, and he says, please, so quietly odasaku almost thinks he imagined it.

but it was real.

and so he nods.

dazai drags him (read as: attempts to, cause he is way too underweight and doesn't have the strength) and he doesn't know where he is going.

they ventur into some decaying part of the city, almost at the edge of it, until they're in front of an empty storehouse. dazai pushes them into it, closing the door behind them.

"it's a safehouse, one mori doesn't know about"

there is still something careful in his voice, a type of uncertainty that rarely is present.

swiftly, dazai walks across the room, almost completely empty except for a couch, a small, round table and a dusty carpet. there is also an oil lamp, and while dazai is grabbing something from the table, he goes to turn it on.

the light is eerie and it accentuates the pale tone of dazai's skin and the unlived state of the safehouse.

his grief has never been louder.

"all done, now we wait," dazai chippers, but his eyes are sharp. he is pocketing a phone - not the one he always has, and neither one of the mafia burners.

odasaku must have been staring, because dazai smirks, and shrugs. "precautions," he simply says, and oda nods.

"what are we waiting for?" "why, for an annoying dog to bark, of course!"

the words float above his head for a moment, before he understands their meaning.

he sighs.

he wonders if it's too late to go back and have his final duel.

if he is right, he just damned himself to a slow and painful death.

#i think ive been waiting for something for a while and i will spend the next year waiting for it too #i thought i felt panic but i have decided to read it as anticipation. the thrill of rejection or of moving forward or the latter as #a result of the former. i left you with your backpack unattended in the cafe because on fridays i am done #putting my life on hold for another whim-without-a-warning #this cross country service is delayed by 26 minutes so i will grab a bucket and start shovelling the water away from the tracks #everyone is moving on in some different way and im sorry if you think im mean for telling you getting so drunk will disable you from #recording your brainwaves effectively but it seems like you think i owe you an awful lot. one year ago in four days my friend got me hegel's #science of logic for my birthday and i thanked him for proving to me the existence of things this is what i do he said #and then he will spend the rest of his life breathing philosophy and i dont want to spend the rest of my life #breathing someone elses dreams i wait for the moment of realisation. this is now a 30 minute delay. i was supposed to worship beautiful #things and that is what i will do. i think i have a best friend and i know i have a lover and i know to #restrict my love the way you have. im sorry. i hope you understand when i tell you. i am now sitting on the floor in the luggage section of #this incredibly busy train and i saw a photo of her with her boyfriend and her hair in braids smiling like a fool this is the #except a week ago you told me you almost took too much this time to live. you are a beautiful girl with a beautiful soul and you know you #have already changed the world and it somehow was not enough. now you are smiling without any makeup on next to him #and yesterday you cried in an airport in the states when you were too full of love. this is the most extraordinary human being i have met.#tomorrow he heads off to princeton while his best friend heads to harvard. he goes there to make the world a better place. he is the most #extraordinary person i have ever met. the issue with human beings is that we are incredibly good at almost dying and keeping going.#you try to kill yourself and publish a paper and give a talk. you negotiate the seperation between your own parents and submit another #phd application. i am surrounded by extraordinary people with extraordinary minds and incredibly broken happy hearts.#i only see you smile when you talk about robotics. i still dont know how manifolds work and i love the concept anyway. i dont know.#i do know that i refuse to live unsatisfied.#you can keep drinking. im going to drink this reality up #i think i was a horrible person and i refuse to engage with that mentality again no matter what it takes.
