" Zemo replied I'm surprised you actually want a book on cooking from sokoiva". You look down "I've never tried it. but you always smelled so delicious I wanted to taste the food myself. " Zemo smirks, "I would love to teach you how to cook it properly draga. If you would let me in the tower I can teach you". you chuckle, nice try but I'm not inviting you into the tower. you let out a small whine as another cramp causes you to double over in pain. Zemo whispers his voice slightly thicker. you know draga it will only get worse, I've studied wolves if they don't have an alpha mate them they often go feral, or they are attacked by hunters because they are weaker. Clint walks back in holding a frozen coffee. "the Cinnabon place was closed". Zemo why are you here he asks with a death glare". you pick up your books and take them to the checkout counter. Zemo speaks softly "I came to apologize to y/n after I heard about what happened I realized it was all my fault." Clint checks on you over his shoulder what do u mean? I already know u hurt her last night are you telling me you don't remember doing that? Zemo looks down no I heard about the 8 dead bodies they found outside of a bar. they were all mauled by some animal 4 blocks from where she threw me through the wall. Clint whispers that's why she was drunk last night when we found her.

What do you mean? Clint, where did you find y/n? Clint checks on you again before replying. Bucky and I heard her scream and ran to her room to find her in the shower with all her clothes on, trying to frantically wash off she was saying it won't come off it won't come off. we had to give her some medicine to calm her down so we could find out what happened. bucky slept in his room with her to make sure she was ok. she came to the bookstore trying to feel better hence the coffee. you walk back over to Clint. "im checked out can we go now I do not want that smell getting on my jacket I just washed it" Zemo looks up at you "I am sorry for my actions draga but I meant what I said. " you glare at him "stay away from my human Zemo that's a warning. with that you disappear having teleported back to the tower. clint goes to talk to bucky. "bucky did you know she killed 8 people last night ? " bucky looks up from cleaning his guns "no but that would explain why she was so drunk last night I thought zemo had tried to trigger her and she managed to get away but that makes a lot more sense. Clint says zemo showed up at the book store he apologized to her but then threatened her because she won't come with him. bucky gets up and walks out to the kitchen where you are curled up reading under the counter. you look up at him and say softly I'm not mad at you anymore I understand you just wanted me to rest so I didn't get sick. y/n you killed 8 people last night why didn't you tell me that this morning? bucky stands there with his arms crossed looking very irritated waiting for an answer. you look down I don't remember doing it bucky I had no idea when zemo tried to bite me everything went black and then black I woke up next to you. bucky kneels on one knee and gently tilts your head back to make you look directly in the eyes with him . bucky i promise i didnt know . bucky gets up and walks back over to clint . " she says she dosent remember any thing and i can tell her in her eyes the the only thing she remembers is me triggering her to pass out . she has trama from zemo he used to taunt her and he was quite cruel to her he put her in the chair more made her fight more often it was like he was on a mission to make her kill him and then one night she snapped thats the night she still has nightmares about we almost escaped but she blacked out again and i was the only one around she attacked me and we both woke up in the med bay the doctors say the only reason i didnt bleed out was because my heart was beating so slowly from the extreme cold from the winter . i dont know why but she didnt leave me they said she was trying to get me too wake up when they found us. after that they kept her separated from me i would hear her screams i have no idea what he did to her but it must be pretty traumatic for her to switch personalities for hours like that . clint whispers keep an eye on her he might tell the police they might come asking questions. it dosent matter if she doesn't remember doing it she did it . she said something about a scent getting in her jacket at the store she just washed it . bucky looks over towards the kitchen before whispering cherry blossoms she told me before thats what he smells like normally i imagine now he smells like that plus the scent of an alpha. the two walk over to the kitchen to find you asleep with your blanket and a book in top in your lap.

zemo couldn't sleep the scent of you drove him mad he wanted nothing more than to rut deep inside of you . he was fascinated with you while u were at hydra. he had a soft spot for you that was why he would train your harder, he didnt want you being replaced. when he almost lost you he separated you from the soldier, unless the two of you were sparing or on a mission. he couldnt out his finger on it but he didnt want to let you go unfortunately him pushing you so hard caused him to one of the first ones you attacked when you finally did snap it was terrifying. he wanted to teach you how to cook the dishes from his home land sonce you seemed so intrigued by them . he knew he had to bring the soldier back with or without you he snarled at the thought of them hurting you again he get up to take a shower hoping it would help he allowed the water to run he leaned his head back trying to calm him self .

I feel as if it’s extremely unfair to say that in TFATWS Bucky was characterized as a basic and like every other male lead, and that he was different than his previous appearances because he really wasn’t. He was still shown to be very socially awkward, and outside of fighting scenarios, he was very much had a softer way of carrying himself, especially compared to other characters. He was still insecure and I’d even go as far as to say he was pretty sensitive for a male (I only say that because of the toxic masculinity discussion). While I do agree that the writers didn’t do him justice, I still think it’s not complete accurate to say he was a whole different character than before. Yes he was grumpier, but I think it was a fair choice considering he was at his worst and it was mainly a defense mechanism that was very easy for other characters to break down and reveal that soft sadness he has, which is why it happened multiple times. I don’t really think he was just made into this alpha male type. I think that he was overall decently in character.

Thanks for the ask. It's been about a year since I last ranted about TFATWS so my memory's starting to get hazy about the story beats, which is...also something I intend to let stay that way. I think other users have stronger opinions on the toxic masculinity aspect of Bucky's portrayal in TFATWS than I do.

My focus has always been less on the masculinity aspect of Bucky than the rewriting of his victimhood -- the framing of scenes and dialogue that suggests Bucky had choice in his time in Hydra and that he needs to make amends for his "villainy". The script also assigned Bucky out of character decisions - going to Zemo was very much a forced plot device made to set up the 3-way fight with Wakanda, and I've had at least 3 rants about it so I won't do it again here - that does not benefit him and is not adequately explained by his motivations. You can try to fill in with head-canons about why he'd do that, but the series makes the audience do so much heavylifting with head-canons to fill their plot holes that at some point you need to step back and say "nope, you just haven't written the story properly".

If I did talk about toxic masculinity, I would have been talking about the authorial intent in the script. The mildness, the hesitation, the heartfelt worry and the genuine smiles - that's something Sebastian brought to the table, because he knows Bucky is capable of it. What people have pointed to toxic masculinity is his insensitive abrasiveness towards Sam, and the fact that the resolution to his 70 years of horrendous trauma is "you've got to do the work". Which then involved him personally confronting victims of the Winter Soldier, without any training or forewarning or support for either parties. It was a thoughtless endnote to something that had been built up for years in the movies.

That said, as other people have pointed out, the very rewriting of Bucky's victimhood is rooted in toxic masculinity. In the idea that men can't be acknowledged as powerless victims of abuse, that to be an acceptable male-presenting protagonist, masculinity has to be restored by rewriting him as having a choice in the violence, even if it makes him villainous, and that his pathway to regaining his "hero" status is not through healing and coming to terms with his helplessness, but to deny that it had been the case and to "redeem" himself by confronting other victims.

There is also a lot of other discussion about why Bucky, a POW who fought against Nazis in WW2 (and based on a comics Jewish character), is consistently made to take the fall for Hydra, a Nazi organisation while none of the victims (including Tony Stark) ever sought to make actual Hydra agents pay.

So yes...the criticism about TFATWS!Bucky wasn't simply about his masculinity.

Omega Peter has a fling with alpha TFATWS Bucky, who has to run off and deal with flag smashers, irritating supersoldiers, Zemo etc.

Peter decides he can’t tell Bucky because he thinks Bucky and Sarah are a thing (he overheard Sam say something and totally misunderstood) and that Bucky isn’t interested in more.

He doesn’t think he can cope on his own and omegas aren’t allowed abortions because of dick laws that say both parents consent.

So he goes to Madripoor where he can get an abortion. But when he gets to the place he changes his mind. So he leaves and tries to slink his way up a building.

Of course he gets noticed, and cornered, and corralled into someplace. He keeps hearing about the Powerbroker and that Zemo guy from years ago.

They work out Peter’s pregnant and has his own weird version of the serum. So they reckon they can play the long game, keep him and breed him (they have no idea that the baby is Bucky’s).

Peter manages to get a message to Sam asking for help so naturally Sam gets his best friend on board…

Bucky is the one who lands in Peter’s room to clear it and immediately scents his mate and his pup. He practically tears everyone apart that comes at them.

Afterwards he confesses that he bonded with Peter without realising it at the time and he’s been trying to court him for about a month with texts and handwritten letters, sending him flowers and small gifts and thought he’d been rejected.

Obviously he reclaims Peter and is emotional over the baby but he has a new problem. Where and how the hell are they going to hide to ensure the safety of his family?

"i am sorry for my actions last night i was drunk . can we talk ? .you answer softly can you let go of me ?. you hurt me alot last night . zemo lets go and steps back . you turn around too see him . he says im sorry i hurt you. a bad cramp hits you lean against the wall and bend over in pain. he curses in russian. " Draga your heat has started you need to get home before another alpha scents you " you growl and stand up . "im not going any where zemo if some one trys any shit with me i will kill stab them . 5. Do you respond to comments? I try to, I always mean to, but I think I'm a bit behind right now. I know there are some amazing comments on Home to Me from last year that I still haven't replied to and I feel bad about it all the time.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending? Probably Under Lock and Key (what a mess we’ve made), the Heinrich/Helmut Zemo dadcest fic I wrote for @ex0rin where I followed her hurt/no comfort philosophy of leaving him on the floor crying.

7. What's the fic you wrote with the happiest ending? I don't know if I really do happy endings? I have PWPs where the happy ending is they both come, if that counts. 😅 Let's say... Ink Kissed (with violent precision) where tattoo artist Bucky gives his client Zemo a dick tattoo, and Zemo ends up quite happy with the tattoo as well as the rest of the service.

8. Do you get hate on fics? I've only gotten one or two of the world's mildest hate comments. I guess my ships are sufficiently niche that no one cares about them.

9. Do you write smut? Yeah! Do I write anything other than smut? No.

10. Craziest crossover: I've only written one crossover, A Suitable Course of Treatment, Bucky Barnes/Laszlo Kreizler from The Alienist, which isn't crazy at all because as we all know, Laszlo has Zemo's face. (If it counts, I once started a Dir en grey x Sailormoon fic where the band members magically turned into Sailor Scouts, but I did not ever get far on it.)

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen? Not to my knowledge.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated? Nope.

13. Have you ever co-written a fic before? Yes, the aforementioned Adopt, Don’t Shop was co-written with @violenciorp and @tales-from-a-maphia-don, because Vio lovingly bullied us into it, despite me and Mel ostensibly not being into Omegaverse.

14. All time favorite ship? I've jumped ship a lot over the years, but it's gotta be Winterbaron, since this is the ship that finally got me writing and posting and getting really involved in a fandom.

15. What's a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will? The first serious attempt I made at writing in this fandom was this teen Zemo necrophilia thing, and I wrote the necro part but none of the plotty stuff leading up to it. I still dream of finishing it, in an abstract way where I have no motivation to ever work on it.

16. What are your writing strengths? I think I'm pretty good at rhythm and flow and making my prose sound musical? That's something I focus a lot on and I tend to read aloud while editing to make sure it sounds good to my ear.

17. What are your writing weaknesses? Probably plot and dialogue, and figuring out how to include technical details of things I know nothing about. But most of all procrastination, my arch-nemesis.

18. Thoughts on dialogue in another language? I personally avoid it, because I find it annoying to have to look up the translations in the middle of reading. I prefer to just say they're speaking in whatever language but write the dialogue in English.

19. First fandom you wrote in? J-rock RPF in the early 2000s, but I mostly just did a bit of RP and never got far with any fics I started.

20. Favorite fic you've written? Sometimes it feels like every new thing I post is my new favourite, haha. But I thiiiink my fave has been Something Sweet to Eat since I wrote it (the Halloween fic mentioned earlier), because it's probably the most self-indulgent thing I've written to date. I am truly the main audience for that fic and I'm very happy with it.

Oh no I totally agree that it is undoubtedly fair, truly warranted, to criticize the way the attempt to rewrite his victim hood into him being at fault. I less so sent that ask towards you (bc I’ve followed you for a long time and know how you feel) and more so in a response to other anons. Truly, the erasure of Bucky being a victim sends me over the edge and the whole thunderbolts thing has me raging. That wasn’t really what I was trying to get at in my first ask. And I very very much agree that the whole ‘amends’ and Sam’s (ooc) line of basically tell him to man up and work harder, etc., was all rooted in toxic masculinity from the writers. I was more so trying to say that even though TFATWS did have some major issues, I don’t think Bucky was completely off from his prior characterization, unfortunately they did seem to teeter back and forth and be contradictory with his trauma. Especially considering some of the stuff the cast and crew have said in interviews that do lean towards Bucky being a victim. But when you look at a majority of his actual behaviors and personality, it’s pretty fitting unlike some people try to argue. While the whole going to Zemo thing was wildly unlike Bucky, I do think that him being shitty to Sam doesn’t really fall into the same category. I say that because some times, just real people, characters can be assholes and they have flaws, and you know in the end he knew he was in the wrong and partially didn’t understand Sam’s reasoning. So I do think that isn’t a mistake on the writers part but that’s just my personal opinion. In all, while I do think he wasn’t done justice or utilized properly, Bucky’s primary characterization wasn’t wrong. It was more so the way the storyline tried to depict him and how some of the other characters treated him.

To be honest, I credit Seb with 90% of Bucky’s characterisation in the movies and the show. Let’s face it, Bucky’s characterisation was pretty thin if we’re going off the scripts alone (including the movies). He was a plot device for Steve, not a fully written person. Seb was the one who made Bucky give the long weighty looks to Steve during the war, the child-like confusion during the conversation with Pierce, and those sad reflective half-smiles during CACW/IW/EG. He’s a small side character with an exceptional narrative importance, and a lesser actor would have just peeled off the lines and called it a day. Seb went hard into it - he researched vets and PTSD, he made headcanons for Bucky’s relationship with Steve and even his fighting style, for a character that had 15 lines in the movie with his name in the title and only 2 emotive scenes, he’s tried very hard to make it a believable, human emotional journey.

If you look purely at Bucky’s lines in TFATWS — particularly his to-and-fro with his therapist, Zemo and even some of the ones with Sam, under a different actor they could have been aggravating, petulant and caustic. Sebastian kept it consistent with Bucky’s journey up to now — he was weary, uneasy and always a little vulnerable under the gruffness. Sebastian is very good at doing vulnerable, and that alone saved Bucky from being a flat alpha male. Under a different directorial/writer team I would have said they did a good job with the consistency, but MCU directors since Russo’s are notorious for letting their actors take the reins with their characters especially for emotional beats. By and large, because they’ve been so lucky with their casting, that’s worked, but it’s going to fray at the seams eventually.

I think one of the reasons why people say Bucky was out of character (apart from some of the decisions) was that he had a period of healing in Wakanda, and when we saw him in IW he was smiling and friendly. When we meet Bucky in TFATWS he’s raw and nervous again, and something has made his recovery go backwards. The series then avoids the giant elephant in the room for both Sam and Bucky, which was how much hurt EG!Steve’s decision caused both of them…so while we can understand the context for Bucky’s anger, that context was never acknowledged to be true…and if we ignore that context, then there’s no reason his recovery should have gone backwards.

TFATWS was full of crappy contradictions like this.
